“they could control the mind of a man, suck the life from him with a single embrace...”
my first entry for @merlinbingo !
for prompt C1 (Lamia) & the Julyrical bonus badge, this is a twelve-track playlist for everyone’s favourite girl who’s actually a horrifying monster that brings men to the brink of death with a single kiss...
(playlist cover under the cut + some explanation of my song choices!)
1. monster // i like the erotic horror vibes of the song, plus the theme of a little monster, something deceptively small and harmless but actually deadly.
2. snake // lamia isn’t really a snake kind of monster, but the point more generally is a deadly creature hunting men down. also, various lyric translations point to double meanings in some lines, which i think suits lamia’s manipulative nature.
3. siren // sirens and lamia are both typically female creatures that lure men to their deaths... this song issues a warning to the guy to get away, which is more warning than lamia’s prepared to give, but the song also feels quite unapologetic about the violence coming the man’s way.
4. peek-a-boo // the horror story of the mv is a significant factor in the song’s place in this playlist! but i also think some of the lyrics like a fox who wants to have fun suits the theme of something outwardly soft and cute but actually deadly if you let it get too close.
5. gaslighting // a song from the victims’ pov! i think the concept works in a magical context too, and tbh i believe that on a subconscious level, the song reflects how the knights might have felt, even if outwardly they rejected the idea that lamia was influencing them.
6. scream // i love the lyric switch from i don’t want to scream to i just want to make you scream. really suits lamia’s presentation as a helpless victim vs the reality of a monster disguising itself.
7. venom // more victim pov. lamia isn’t a spidery monster, but the imagery of being caught in a web suits how she traps men and draws them to their deaths, and again, there’s the suggestion of maybe not wanting to escape at all.
8. because // one dreamcatcher song is not enough!! but more seriously, lyrics like i’ve been disguising myself, and everything, even your breath, forever mine... is this or is this not lamia speaking right now?? and in some twisted way, i think lamia sees what she does as because i love you, the same way any predator loves its prey for filling its stomach.
9. bewitched // there are lyrics about being eaten up and swallowed, being bewitched by someone’s lies... also, i can’t recall if lamia ever made a noise like it, but the noise that someone on this song makes before the first chorus definitely suits her.
10. spider // again, lamia isn’t a spidery monster, but it’s the repeated themes of being trapped in a web with conflicting feelings of danger and desire, the twisted sense of wanting to stay even knowing that it’ll kill you.
11. good night // the repeated mentions of devils coming, and taunting the victim to run even though you can’t escape, no matter how much you try... and i’ll say it again, one dreamcatcher song is not enough!!
12. love killa // again with the themes of predator and prey, including a line about being eaten like a main dish, fitting the way lamia seems to literally eat men’s souls.
thank you to anyone who bothered to read to the end of this needless essay on my song choices!! i hope you enjoyed the playlist.

Friendly reminder that asking your lycan partner to turn you is incredibly insensitive! Seriously can we retire this trope already? Not only is it just offensive, but no one would ever actually choose this life! Lycanthropy is a curse. Full stop.

Ok user "moon-moon" as if that original meme wasn't created to mock pack nomenclature 🙄
Anyway I'm not gonna touch that internalized lycanphobia with a ten foot pole. Being turned by your partner is something that can be incredibly intimate as long as both parties are consenting and the one being turned is 100% sure they want it. Literally the only downside to transforming once a month is the pain, but midol works just fine. No one with these "lycanthropy bad" takes ever wants to discuss the legitimate positives that come with this "curse" lmao.
🐺 moon-moon4w00 Follow
I'm literally reclaiming moon moon but go off I guess. Anyways turning your partner is absolutely disgusting and morally reprehensible and anyone who does it should be muzzled permanently.
🌜 impawssible Follow
lmao my wife literally saved my life when she turned me but i guess she should be muzzled huh? we run through the woods hunting deer together and can each haul in groceries in one trip now, but nooo she's obviously a danger to society because she cares enough about me to help me when insurance wouldn't cover my medicine
also it was confirmed that the creator of that meme literally makes and sells silver bullets so if you still wanna use moon moon for yourself that certainly is a choice. source: (X)

I love that instead of naming the more common benefits of lycanthropy, you mentioned that you and your wife can carry all the groceries in one trip. I think that's definitely a positive that gets overlooked far too often and I commend you for speaking your truth, sir

lol thanks but I'm a woman 😅

wasn't OP the same guy who said fursuits were offensive to lycanthropes and doxxed a werewolf fursuiter?
🐺 moon-moon4w00 Follow
They ARE offensive and harmful to this community and I'm tired of pretending they're not. They perpetuate harmful depictions of what a humanoid wolf is actually like.

me when I dox someone for making candy colored animal costumes that look nothing like what a real werewolf does

Sources for Somerton's Plagiarism from Hbomberguy's Video (as much as I could get)
I went back through Harry's video, focused entirely on the sources James Somerton pulled from in the hopes of creating as much of a comprehensive list as I could--though my Google-Fu is not very strong. I did however find something I thought was forever lost and that made me very happy--specifically the magazine Midlands Zone containing the column by Steven Spinks that Harry poignantly used as an illustration of gay erasure... while Somerton uses it to sound like HE is waxing remorseful about the very subject.
This is not a complete list, I'm sure. For one thing, I was only able to attempt to pull sources that Harry himself mentioned in the video. Surely there's so very much more out there. I expect there to be a great deal more internet archeology to unearth just how much writing and culture Somerton has stolen like he's the British Museum of Natural History but for gay people.

Harry created a convenient playlist of videos by these and other people he wants to bring to everyone's attention.
Please give them your support.

Midlands Zone Magazine - Column by Steven Spinks
After a great deal of searching, I found an archive of the "Midlands Zone" magazine, where you can read through past issues dating all the way back to February 2014. I have also found the issue from which Somerton took Spinks' poignant discussion of gay erasure:
Overall archive
Specific Issue - Pages 16-17
It will not allow you to download it, but you can read it exactly as it appeared in print form.

I refrained from including certain sources.
First off only focusing on Somerton's work.
Secondly not including anything that might be visible enough to not require amplifying their voice (I cannot speak for all of those I have found links to, but journalism is frequently a thankless job).
Thirdly any source that is of a nature that is antithetical to the very existence of the queer community, such as the right-leaning source that didn't make it into Somerton's video, but Harry was able to identify as a source he had considered using.
If you feel I have missed a mentioned source--or you know of a source from material that was not covered in Harry's video--please do not hesitate to reblog with added details.
