Delicious in Dungeon Anime Season 1, Episode 2 Review
Spoilers for season 1, episode 2 below the cut! There may also be mild manga spoilers so proceed with caution.
This episode was great! I think it was a big improvement on the first. Honestly no real complaints... I do kind of wish both Marcille and Chilchuck could have had stand-alone episodes dedicated to their character development, to allow for a deeper focus, but I understand why they didn't do it, and the pacing was still excellent. I do still sometimes feel like the show is in fast-forward at times, because with 3 meals in one episode, it feels like the characters finish eating, and we jump cut to them saying that they're hungry again, without anything to help really impress upon viewers that time has passed. Makes it feel a bit like we're reading a collection of short 4-panel gag comics instead of a continuing story… which, early Dungeon Meshi DOES have that as part of it's format, but it changes with time, as we get into longer individual stories.
During the Basilisk/Doni and FIonil section, I really do miss some of the dry humor from the manga. ("Hurry, he's getting cold!" "Move him closer to the fire!") The hilarity of slowly preparing a meal while someone is dying of poison has unfortunately been lost, which makes Doni and Fionil much less memorable characters…. But it benefits the other 2 stories in the ep to have more time so I think it was the right choice to make. It also gives people something to go back and read the manga for, since it's a little different! If you're reading this and you're an anime only, consider reading the manga while you watch the anime! I promise it's worth it. I'm excited about next week because I think they'll devote the entire episode to Laios and the living armors, which is me and my spouse's favorite early DM storyline, and the part where we both said "Oh, I LOVE this manga..." and got really invested. It's 2 chapters in the manga so it could be an entire episode…. which also would make sense, if that's why they needed to crunch 3 chapters into episode 2. Just like the first episode, animation was fantastic, and as usual the weakest points are when characters are just walking or talking and not doing much. Everything more dynamic is just bouncy and adorable and full of life. Very rarely is anything animated in a dull or flat way. They're doing their best to use "move a drawing around" or "zoom on a drawing" for comic effect and I think it's working well so far. There's some great animal animation in this episode, the bat flying around and the basilisk chasing Marcille in particular. Translation was better this time around, no dumb modern or game references in the dub ("newbs" "as if" etc.) … But there are differences between the subtitles and the dub script that change how easy it is to understand what's happening. When Senshi tells Chilchuck to cut up the giant bat, the subtitles make it hard to understand what he's telling him to do, and the dub makes it a lot clearer. In the subs when Senshi calls Chilchuck a half-foot child, the subtitles say "I'm not a child" and the dub says "I hate it when people call me 'kid'"… The latter is more interesting for keeping the mystery going for things that happen later in the story. If the show continues like this, I think the English dub may be the more satisfying way to watch it (even though the Japanese performances are great), mostly because the subs are very literal and sometimes miss things that the English dub somehow manages to include. And for some reason Netflix isn't including translation of Japanese signs on-screen during the subtitles, but they DO provide them when you watch the English dub. A lot of Dungeon Meshi's humor is sometimes in those background signs so completely missing out on them sucks. Anyway those are my thoughts for this episode! See you next week Meshiheads.

Princess Mononoke Review
Tumblr media
Ohohoho I was looking forward to this one! Word on the street is that Spirited Away is what most people think is the best Miyazaki movie, but Princess Mononoke is the actual best one.
Fun fact, I watched every one of these Ghibli movies subbed, since I saw them after a shift and our theater showed the dubbed versions earlier that the subbed versions. Honestly, I don't think it makes a significant difference, especially when it comes to Ghibli. Don't come at me anime nerds. My point is I made sure to watch the dub for Mononoke. Why? Because it was adapted by Neil Fuckin' Gaiman (pretty sure that's his middle name, complete with apostrophe) who just so happens to be my favorite writer of all time. So this movie has got to be good!
What's The Movie About?
A prince of a hidden village gets cursed, exiled, and forces his way into a conflict between two human factions and the gods of the land. Can he heal his curse, make peace between the humans and gods, as well as get together with the hot wolf girl?
What I Like.
Broken record time, the animation is fucking gorgeous. This time around I was really impressed with the fighting animation. The speed an choreography was a sight to behold I tell ya. It was also shockingly violent, which I dug the hell out of. Kinda made me wonder why there was a bunch of families in the audience, I guess anime parents don't care if their kids get traumatized. I also really dug the score. I usually don't go for instrumental pieces but it felt like every twenty minutes I was marveling at the orchestra. The story was pretty cool, but the world building was what really impressed me. It, like Spirited Away, was clearly based on Shintoism. But unlike Spirited Away I never felt like I was missing information about the world building because I didn't know much about the religion. I really liked the characterization of the different tribes of animals/forest spirits. And speaking of characters, Miyazaki writes some pretty damn good female characters doesn't he? Well, to be accurate, he write good characters regardless of gender, but I really liked the Lady of Iron Town despite her being an antagonist. And speaking of the antagonists, I really like how complex the human characters were. The monk was a scumbag yet I still got worried when it seemed like he was gonna die. When the people of Iron Town were fighting the wolves I legit didn't want either side to lose. That fight ended super fucking cool as well, the lead walking out of there was raw as hell. There were some raw as hell lines as well. The line "I'm going to show you how to kill a god. A god of life and death. The trick is not to fear them." makes me want an RPG about mortals killing gods, which is about the highest compliment I can give something. Also I wanna ride an elk.
What I Don't Like.
I feel like just saying this is going to get me looks like when San first sees Ashitaka, but I have a couple problems with this movie.
One, the message is kinda shaky. Don't get me wrong, I don't think that promoting pacifism and environmentalism is a bad thing, it's just that, to me, the gods seems completely justified in their actions. The humans are not only killing each other, but completely overstepping their bounds, destroying spirits with their consumption. All the gods want is to stop their ravaging of the land. They also tried to rebuild, but the humans wouldn't let them, that's what was driving the Apes into wanting to take up arms. Maybe doing that would get them cursed, but also the curse came from the bullets the humans made so it seems like the spirits didn't have a real choice here.
Two, and I know this makes me sound like a miserable bastard, but I wish the movie ended more nihilistically. Like, I know all the gods died, but not a single named human did. The movie should've ended with the Forest God dying in peace, and then the valley is just forever fucked. You kill the spirit of the land and nothing grows there anymore. Sorry, but you fucked up! It felt like the movie was going in a more tragic direction as well, but instead all the pretty flowers came back and everyone's like "We can rebuild!" And the two leads are together even though they should've definitely done a self-sacrifice. Speaking of that...
Three, the romance between the prince and princess is completely unnecessary. Like if you cut it out entirely the movie would have been just as good, if not better. It's really rushed and really just seems to be there to have the lead chase wolf girl for a bit, but it makes equally as much sense if he thought she knew how to get to the Forest God. Or if he was just curious about why she was siding with the wolves. Oh yeah, I guess the power of their love saved their lives at the end but that was so eyerolling my retinas twisted. I feel like Miyazaki either doesn't know how or doesn't really like writing romances. (And before you go, "What about Howl's?", according to most sources Sophie and Howl's relationship seems to be completely lifted off the page of the novel, so I have a feeling he didn't actually write that part.)
Final Summation.
Princess Mononoke is great. Obviously. Watch it. I don't have anything else to say, but since I have your attention down here, I'm gonna give you all a little bonus.
All Ghibli Movies I've Seen So Far Ranked
Real quick from worst to best:
6th: Ponyo-It's not really fair, but I'm putting Ponyo at the lowest because the last time I watched it I was like 10, and I don't remember much about it. I do remember liking it, but according to most sources 10 is like the perfect age to enjoy Ponyo. If I ever do that Ghibli marathon I'm constantly thinking about, I'll rewatch it.
5th: My Neighbor Totoro-Totoro hits me right in the nostalgia, when I rewatched it I was all curled up in my chair smiling ear to ear. But honestly, it's a "stuff just kinda happens" plot. There's not really anything wrong with that, it just suffers comparing it to more complete narratives.
4th: Spirited Away-Me putting this here is just drawing a target on my back for white people who unironically own katanas, but counterpoint: Bite me. It's good, just not goddamn mandatory viewing.
3rd: Princess Mononoke-Urgh I had a hard time between choosing between my second and third favorite Ghibli movie, but the deciding factor was creativity. Mononoke is pretty imaginative, but not compared to...
2nd: The Boy and the Heron-I liked this movie when I saw it, but after this Ghibli Month at work I like it a whole lot more. It took some time to figure out what the hell the story was supposed to be about, but I honestly think it occupying my mind for several weeks is a boon.
And 1st: Howl's Movie Castle-No duh. Look, the plot of Howl's isn't as good as the majority of this list, but Howl's has one advantage over every other movie on this list. That is that it fucks. I'm not referring to how I want Howl to fuck me, or that it's the only Ghibli movie I've seen so far with a romance that is worth anything. (I don't know if I made that clear in my review, but I really liked the romance in the movie.) I mean that it has way more personality than these other movies. The the titular character, Howl's Movie Castle has a charm and pluck that carries it over it's flaws and into my heart. Also it's goddamn sexy.

TLDR: There's some hints within the beginning of cannon that makes it feel like quirklessness was handled differently than later. I think compairing the first episode of BNHA to a sports anime introduction where the MC is short downplays what happened. Cannon feels inconsistent within itself with some topics, quirklessness feeling like a topic that keeps getting surface level touched and then dropped on its head for no reason. BNHA writing just feels weird sometimes. 20 percent of the world's population does not equal 20 percent of Japan's population. Society discriminating against some quirks or lack of ability to accommodate them does not point away from potential quirkless discrimination.
With your "fanon vs canon" with quirkless discrimination, I have some additional topics to bring up.
Heavy disclaimer I stopped watching the anime at some point (they could cover some things within the anime I have not seen but I did stop within the last season so not too bad) and I don't keep up with other BNHA media (I have not read the other manga or seen the movies). I also haven't watched this show in a while but I did try to go back and rewatch stuff that was relevant/read information on it. I almost didn't post this whole thing because I'm not caught up on everything, and don't really plan to be, but I typed it all up so I figure might as well, just feel free to point anything out where I might be missing knowledge from that's relevant or just haven't seen it.
First, just going to say I honestly don't think being quirkless is that big of a deal when it comes to heroics, I don't think it'd be that big of a "handicap". Second:
"Midoriya? You're kidding, right? There's no way you're getting into the hero course without a quirk!" And Midoriya responds back with, "Well, actually they got rid of that rule."
This implies that schools could directly reject someone into job positions/schools based on their quirkless status. Its not just discouraged but there was a rule outright banning quirkless individuals.
The sub is more ambiguous, saying, "There's no way you can get into U.A. just by studying!" To which the response by Midoroya is the same. I could see some people still reaching the same conclusion that's more clear in the dub while others over look it.
Funimation dub and Crunchyroll sub as those where readily available to me. I most likely watched first in sub but I know I watched the dub of the first episode at some point a while after and have been using english transcripts that seem to use the english dub instead of the english subs to go back over facts of the series. I think I still reached the same conclusion that quirkless people seem to have lackluster protection laws due to that single line the first time I watched in the sub given the, "They got rid of that rule!" feels like it points explicitly towards Midoriya's quirklessness still.
I was always under the impression from watching that very first episode, that schools could just straight up reject quirkless people due to their quirklessness which sets a far more grim view of the laws and protections around quirkless people in universe. It was unclear if it was because of demands made by quirkless groups or of U.A.'s own accord that the rule was lifted, meaning other schools and areas could very well do the same if so.
I do think the first episode introduction to how Izuku is treated is way more harsh then most if not all sports anime drama. Take another anime I've seen, Haikyuu, with pretty much the exact same proposed plot but its volleyball and all he gets is silly comments or people going "You're a middle blocker?" or some disbelief. I'm sure its the same for other shows with that same plot; the main character is not going to have explosions used on him, physically beat up, his stuff thrown out of windows, completely isolated, and more through out his entire life just because they're short and want to go into a height focused game. I think it's a bit of a stretch personally to compile the two together and just does the opposite of what the fanon does sometimes - plays down the first introduction of the behavior Izuku faces instead of upscaling it.
Also, it's twenty percent of the world's population as far as I can find, not Japan's. I figure there's higher concentrations of quirkless people in different areas (as is such with real life traits) and that Japan's population is quite low (for 1 in 5 people with quirklessness being a major identifier for the main character, we only get two more that are born quirkless). Twenty percent of the global population doesn't exactly mean twenty percent where Izuku is. As far as we can tell, it really doesn't seem that way in canon, that everyone knows a quirkless person personally like the statistics would suggest.
To also address the thing about how society handles quirks: it just comes down to what society views as the 'average person' I'd think within the BNHA world. People who do not fit this will garner unjust attention, be it from "inconvenient" quirks (the shown gigantism quirks about housing in the example), "villainous" quirks (Shinsou), or quirklessness. While most quirkless people may not need extra accommodations (as societies are always slow on those, as shown in the manga) they are still viewed as...let's say "non-default". Society will always expect you to be this "default" that they find normal. While yes, some people may discriminated towards for their quirks, I feel this doesn't make much of a point towards if quirkless people are also discriminated against or not and I am unsure where comparing the two groups comes in. Having some illogical superpower is expected and people specifically dislike when someone's is inconvenient or has negative connotations to them - these are two points that can very well exist side by side. Society within BNHA just seems like (from my view on the cannon, as an anime only watcher up to a point) you must be the right type of quirked to be accepted full heartedly, but you must still be quirked. It's also shown that the quirk license requirement really isn't taken all that seriously within the show (Bakugou uses his multiple times and so do some of his middle school "pals", Izuku's classmates in middle school in general, kid's in kindergarden aren't chastised for playing with their quirks when they first come in, Inko can be seen using her's, and I'm sure there's more examples not coming to mind) - it seems people only stop turning a "blind eye" if you are abusing the power, being a vigilante with it, or are using it extremely disruptively within the anime. Small, daily use seems to be acceptable as far as we can see from the anime canon. Which isn't to say there's still some stuff you could go in on for this law, it is a potential debate about in the BNHA universe but overall I don't get the impression from the anime that its some huge deal if you use your quirk without a license unless its the previously mentioned factors.
To move onto the one organization in the 3rd BNHA movie, as stated before, I haven't watched the movies but honestly it isn't the first time some villain's reasoning has been a bit...oddly chosen? In BNHA, especially in accordance to quirklessness. There was also another plot point about making people quirkless (though also to sell the ""cure"" to said thing to the hero side) but it was...about bringing back the Yakuza? Kinda also felt like a loss in opportunity to me. With the other signs in the anime at the beginning, it feels less like quirklessness isn't something that's looked down on but more so weird writing choices. Which I know doesn't factor in too much for the canon v fanon because if the canon handles it weird, it just handles it weird, but I think it really just continues to highlight It seems to be a reoccurring thing. Though they do have a different context it seems like, with the 3rd movie group more so looking up to quirklessness, but still...
I don't think that it was ever said quirklessness will disappear (correct me if I'm wrong, just that I couldn't find it saying this anywhere), just that the numbers are decreasing each generation. It could potentially stop its decline and flatten out after the whole quirk thing settles. Also, people don't need really need a reason to not make discriminatory laws if they can - they will most likely do it anyway.
With the Vestiges, Toshinori was quirkless, could very well be that with them being exposed to it before. Also they would've all come from era's where quirklessness was even more prevalent potentially, especially the older ones.
Melissa having differing experiences just shows that the experience with quirklessness Izuku had isn't universal but that doesn't mean Izuku's experience is an outlier (and neither does Izuku's experience mean that Melissa's is an outlier, just that we've been given only two examples of how quirkless people are affected by their quirklessness). Places or people can be more accepting or less accepting. Aoyama I'm going to skip because honestly there doesn't seem to be much there to go off of.
Bakugou. I'm skipping him in regards to typing out a big text wall like this seems to have become because Deku V. Kacchan makes me tired to watch (I do not like it) but I will say I honestly don't find Bakugou's reaction weird in this sense. It doesn't seem unusual he wouldn't just try to understand it since he respects All Might, wants to know why this man he's admired since four years old picked Izuku, and Izuku isn't quirkless anymore, meaning one of his main issues with Izuku was ""fixed"". Again, I don't really like it but its just how it is (or how I read it, personally).
I just figured these might also be important notes for the fanon vs canon discussion - along with just some of my own opinions and thoughts on some matters brought up. I'm unsure what the manga says but over all I just think canon is very wishy washy with a lot of its topics, quirklessness very much included. While some people do push it a lot farther than whats shown in cannon, I do think cannon has a bit more to it then the whole "there's nothing there really, expect for a feeling of othering, and Izuku was an anomaly". I wouldn't really call it a "tragic curse" since that makes me uncomfortable but yeah. This got a lot longer then it meant to and I was only planning on pointing out the whole "quirkless got blocked from school's" but this happened. As I said before, feel free to point out anything I may of missed or messed up.
I wrote most of this up before the second discussion post and: Quirklessness is not "the norm", having a "normal quirk" is, as far as I read from the series (people are assumed to be quirked until told otherwise). The norm for BNHA characters is a person with no extra toe joint. It's catered to what people prefer with quirked people - quirkless people just happen to fall near there.
I also very much agree with the other anon that it seems there was some author tom-fuckery. The whole series kinda points towards everyone just accepting heroes can't be heroes without quirks...even our two quirkless main protagonists and the main crux of the whole story plot that kick starts everything we know (Izuku gets a quirk because he needs one to be a hero). It doesn't really feel like that'll be challenged, even if it would be a good thing.
I do get what you're saying though, that you're just comparing the two to show how the canon handles things differently. No matter if the author just doesn't want to address it, that still means in canon it wasn't addressed.
I personally, when writing about quirklessness, do not frame it as anything specific but draw from general real life examples that I think could "realistically" happen to those who are quirkless because that makes more sense to me and just gives me a basis to work off. It's fictional and has different context than what actual real life stuff has.
(the post under discussion)
Thank you so much for your thoughtful additions and clarifications. I don't have time to respond to every single point you made, but here are some thoughts:
1) I completely agree that Quirklessness is handled very weirdly and unevenly in the show. They spent the first two episodes building it up as a HUGE emotionally charged plot element, and then almost completely dropped it thematically. Why?? The 20% number is also very strange. 1 out of 5 people are Quirkless, but Izuku is the only Quirkless kid in his class? And it's not like they dropped in a throwaway line about the 20% number 200 chapters ago and forgot about it; the 20% statistic and the shot of Izuku's class happen in the exact same (first) chapter. This is why I speculate that perhaps it's skewed very far towards the older generation. We don't see a lot of grandpas in this show; maybe that's where all the Quirklessness is hiding.
2) Regarding hero schools and their requirements… I don't really find their rule against Quirkless people to be something unfairly discriminatory. Almost all specialized schools that prepare people for dangerous jobs, like firemen, policemen, military, etc have physical requisites you must meet in order to be admitted. This is for the safety of the people being trained and the safety of the public. And again: in this world, "hero" is not just a generic term for a cool dude. It is a very specific job/legal category that was created to let people use their Quirks. Hero schools specifically exist to help people learn how to use their Quirks to fight, so I don't think it's unreasonable at all for them to screen out people who don't have Quirks. Now, is it kind of unfair that heroes as a profession get so many legal perks and so much attention? For sure. If this society had Quirkless policemen kitted out in badass costumes, flying around with jetpack support items and getting on the covers of magazines, then maybe it would feel a little more equal. I can understand the feeling of discrimination, there.
Once again, thanks for the great points. I highly recommend checking out the Vigilantes spin-off manga if this kind of societal inequality/worldbuilding interests you… it gets into some fascinating discussion about how Quirkless vigilantes have certain freedoms that Heroes don't because they're not bound by Hero laws and regulations.

Hii! Im a newer witcher fan and I recently found out about the fonopolis audiobooks through your blog and im literally so in love with them. Everything is so impressive from the acting to the soundtrack to sound effects. It seems that they aren't very popular in the witcher fandom and no one really talks about them which is honestly sad. I was wondering whats your opinion about the characters voices, do you think they match or do you prefer the games dub for example? Is that how you imagined the characters to sound or was it hard to get used to? which voice acting is your favourite? Im especially curious about geralt and dandelion cos they sound so different lol
hello hello :D! i am so glad you are enjoying the audiodramas, they are so underrated and i hope more people find out about them!
as for my opinions about the character voices, i'm so glad you asked... okay, there's four main "sources" for character voices, as i have been introduced to them:
the witcher 3 english voice acting
the witcher 3 polish voice acting
english audiobooks by peter kenny
polish audiodramas by fonopolis
it depends on the character, but i prefer fonopolis for most characters. they actually had to grow on me, because i was so used to peter kenny's versions by that point. but what i found was that the fonopolis versions make them sound *real*, like a live-action witcher, whereas peter kenny's versions sound more... cartoonish, if that makes sense? not in a negative way, just in the style of it.
some of the characters' voices from fonopolis that i really, really enjoy are regis, cahir, and dandelion...
regis' voice acting, i now have an emotional attachment to. and quote a lot to myself, out of context (yesterday i was saying "RyTm SoLaRnY" in my kitchen the way he says it in ch 7, like a dumbass). at first, i was against his voice, i was too used to peter kenny's version. but now i love the variety in his voice and again, it really makes him feel real, almost kind of uncomfortably real, but it's comforting. the variation between a gentle and observant tone from ch 3, a mocking tone from ch 5 when he speaks to geralt, a... dangerous, or serious tone from ch 7 when he discusses his backstory, and a scholarly or philosophical tone which occurs in various instances throughout the book ... the character is interpreted very well. especially because he can transition so quickly between these tones of voice, it's wonderful. my favorite thing is when he speaks very dreamily, going on, somewhat quickly, he's musing... and then he hits on something, and his voice drops, slows, seriously to a vocal fry. there's a great deal of variation which contributes to regis' character because of how he has these layers, you know... and on a personal note, i think his voice has actually been therapeutic for me in readjusting and getting used to a deeper "male" voice as a voice i can trust... this is part of the reason i didn't like it at first, it was too deep... but after listening to it for a while, i got a sense that this was a "safe" voice to be around. so fonopolis regis' VA kind of helped me heal, in a way, i think! that's why it is so personal to me.
cahir's VA is fucking superb and there are some scenes that really capture what it means to act - baptism of fire ch. 7 is spectacular! his embarrassed stammer when speaking about milva's pregnancy to his absolute roar on the bridge just a couple of scenes later... again, it's this kind of passionate performance as well as multifaceted character interpretation which sells this.
dandelion's kind of has this even and somewhat melodious voice, but also masculine and i can imagine him, well, being dandelion-like... my favorite part is in his debut when he speaks with geralt in voice of reason 5, they really sound like they're having this discussion for real.
i also love fonopolis' geralt, milva, yennefer, ciri, calanthe... of all of these, that's like most of the favorite characters list, so you can tell they did a good job.
the two characters i cannot stand from fonopolis are zoltan and percival. they kind of did my boys dirty with zoltan's grating voice and percival's old man one. i don't like it, lol. i guess in this case i would prefer peter kenny's voices for them.
peter kenny's voices are good, and it's impressive how many he can do, but some do fit their characters more than others. i think he gets geralt and dandelion and the hanza, so i don't have many complaints. i also like his yennefer, her conversation with dandelion in blood of elves ch 1 is really well done! the one i kind of dislike is ciri, but ehhh... i kind of just sucked it up and dealt with it. the issue i take with it is that it works for sword of destiny, but in tower of the swallow i felt it was getting old.
his bonhart surprised me - nilfgaardian accent?! but then i realized it makes sense, he's from ebbing, after all. same with borch three jackdaws. i wasn't expecting that voice, but after thinking about it, it makes sense, perhaps...
but i end up quoting peter kenny to myself more than i expect. i repeat things to myself as he has said them... this includes - "i knew it! excuses, foolish, naive excuses, not a bit of sacrifice!" (i also do the: "i hauled myself out onto the rocks for him, i wore out the scales on my bottom, i frayed my fins for him, i caught colds for him! nd he will not sacrifice those two hideous pegs for me? love doesn’t just mean taking, one also has to be able to give up things, to make sacrifices! ... tell him that." ... it's fun, it's singing!) (sh'eenaz), "by the great sun, assire! whatever have you done to your hair?" "i washed it." (fringilla and assire), "don't accuse me of lying, if you can't prove it!" (angouleme), "not a mention of poets. and i try so hard," (dandelion), "only i, the naive and anachronistic witcher..." (geralt), "goodnight, geralt," (dandelion) and "he keeked the leetol one >:(" (barbegazi)... the way he says things are just so melodious.
i dislike witcher 3's english voice acting for many characters (not all, but many) ... the ones i dislike the most are triss and dandelion's, just because i just feel like they're so generic? i never really developed an emotional connection to either of these characters' tw3 english VAs.
i also, perhaps controversially, am not the biggest fan of doug cockle for geralt. he does a great job, he has passion, etc., but after switching to polish VA, i really liked that more for geralt, he sounds more... like a regular guy. i'd have to rank fonopolis geralt and tw3 geralt and musical geralt (YES, musical geralt!) as best geralt voices.
also, this is may to sound kind of stupid coming from someone who can only speak/understand english, but i haven't found a geralt speaking english yet that "made sense" to me as the character. of course, for all the characters of the witcher, when they speak english, i feel like it's "the english version" of that character, but for geralt that difference is even more pronounced, somehow. from tw3's doug cockle, to peter kenny, to (of course i don't like this one) netflix's henry cavill, i have yet to find a english voice for geralt that didn't bother me at least a little bit. i don't really know how he'd sound in english without it being gimmicky. i feel like people just want to do a batman voice. sure, his voice is described as "unpleasant," but i feel like the VAs kind of take this and run with it instead of thinking about him as a character a little more...? like his personality? maybe it's against canon but i don't think of geralt's voice in my head as "unpleasant," i guess it's monotonous, which can be unpleasant to some, but it's not rasping like a lot of interpretations have it. he's just tired and adult/middle-aged in my mind.
i think ciri's tw3 english VA is a bit generic for her, also a bit older (but then again i'm used to ciri being like 10 to 15 years old). however i do like yennefer's tw3 english VA and think it's a good fit for her.
regis' tw3 polish VA ued to be too deep for me but is growing on me. especially in lines when he is expressing fondness for geralt. that makes me :)
bonus discussion goes to the singer for duny in the musical, at first i really did not like it as i felt it was too melodious and beautiful of a voice to give him, especially in his cursed state. but then i thought it fit really well to give him this prince-like voice, with which he used to speak to pavetta... gives me chills! oh, by the way, i like emhyr's english VA for him. sounds... emperor-like.

OKAY so I've seen the first two episodes of the Ultraman Z English dub and here are my thoughts on some of the voices (it's good news, go watch the dub):
Zeno Robinson as Haruki: He's great! Right now he's my favourite. He brings a lot of energy to the role and I was very endeared from the word go (specifically the part in the first episode with Haruki saving a dog). I can think of so many moments that I'm excited to see! I'm not gonna spoil them just in case but I know they are coming and it's making me rub my hands together like a weird little gremlin.
Matt Shipman as Z: Z was probably the one I was most worried about because I'm very partial to Tasuku Hatanaka's Z and Z is one of by favourite Ultras in general. Overall he sounded more mature than I expected, but I don't think that's a bad thing? It's always kind of been my headcanon that Z is trying very, very, VERY hard to look dependable and cool during the events of the series because it's his first time on Earth and he wants to make a good impression, and Matt Shipman's delivery lines right up with that. (I also keep forgetting that Z isn't nearly as goofy in-series as he is in the voice drama.) Honestly I wasn't totally sold on his voice until the scene in episode 2 when Haruki starts being more formal. I'm not sure if the little voice crack when he says "that's enough" was on purpose, but it's perfect.
It's also interesting to see the differences in adaptation here. In the original, Z is more creeped out by Haruki being so humble but he keeps his composure. In the dub, he's surprised and we get to see his serious front crack just a bit. This isn't a complaint by the way; I just think it's interesting that different adaptations can bring out different sides of the characters sometimes. Also it's very, very funny that Z says "ultra-obsequious" in the dub. Him pulling a word like "obsequious" out of nowhere really sells that he talks weird. "I request your aid, dude" in the first episode nearly made me choke on my tea.
Mick Lauer as Juggler: I think it's a bit too early to for me to make a decision on this one, because the Orb influence is too strong and I keep wanting to hear a more trickster-like element to his voice. I did like that kind of threatening edge in Mick Lauer's voice in the second episode though!
Mallorie Rodak as Yoko: It's kind of ridiculous how well her voice fits? If you told me that Rima Matsuda was a native English speaker and came back to dub herself, I would honestly believe you. I'm so, so excited to hear her take on Yoko in the last few episodes (if you know, you know)!
Macy Anne Johnson as Yuka: You can really tell that Macy Anne Johnson is having a lot of fun, and that makes her a joy to watch/listen to, honestly. She's probably my second favourite performance. I'm wondering if people might be put off by her energy, but it worked for me!
Sean Schemmel as Zero: I honestly really like Sean Schemmel as Zero! I was pretty lukewarm about Zero's voice in The Destined Crossroad English dub because I didn't feel that they managed to capture his rough around the edges, almost delinquent-like vibe, but I think this voice does a way better job of getting that roughness across. Also this means that Zero is Goku and that's just great lmao

Random Headcanons (Thorin's Company)
Tumblr media
In celebration of reaching 100 followers, I've decided to write these completely random headcanons right off the top of my head! These are just little cute and strange oddities each character would have!! (Featuring our favorite character, Y/N 😌💗)
Fair warning, this turned out WAY LONGER than expected, so just be prepared 😅
Please like and reblog if you enjoy it!!
•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•
Okay, lets just start off by agreeing...
Kili hates spiders
Like, just a deep-seated hatred for those things
And the ones in Mirkwood gave him serious PTSD
But he especially despises the little ones that crawl all over you, up in your hair
Any time he sees one its just-
"FilifilifILIGETITAWAY FROM ME!!"
And everyone's just laughing at him while he's on the brink of tears 😂😂💀
Kili doesn't really scream, more like a gasp of disgust
HOWEVER-
Fili does scream
And he secretly has a super high pitched scream
And although he does a reasonable job at pitching it down when he's aware...
There are occasions where the older brother will let one slip and he's teased so badly for it 💀
There was one instance where Fili threw a daddy long leg at Kili, which made him yell
Then proceeded to shriek at the top of his lungs when he tripped over a fucking log while trying to run away 😂
And by hearing it, you and the company thought it was a woman in distress, come barreling over, weapons drawn and war faces on
Nope, just Fili who tripped over a dead tree 🙄
Honestly, nobody believed it was him at first
Also, let's just say, canonically, that you dropped out of the sky into middle Earth (like literally every x reader fic on this platform)
And are a part of Gen Z
And let me tell you, teaching the company Gen Z slang is a BALL
The one's who use it the most are surprisingly Dwalin and Gloin 😂😂😂
Most of the time they just say it if you ask them to because they want to learn all about your world and "unique language"
Because let's be honest, hearing Dwalin say
"Shawty???? wHOT ON ARTH ISSAT SUPPOSED TA MEAN?!!1?"
DEAD-
Or even Thorin sometimes
"Bruh? I'm afraid I do not understand..."
pLEASE tell Bilbo and Bombur that their food is 'bussing' 😂
"I'm sorry... It's what?"
And speaking of teaching things...
You and Bofur have an epic handshake 😎💜
It was something you taught him in the span of a few days, and he learned very quickly
It never fails to impress the company (Thorin pretends not to 🙄✋, but he's the most impressed out of everyone)
You and Bofur are like the 'cool uncle' and 'favorite cousin' if you catch my drift
He can be a terrible influence on some of the young ones, and you are everyone's favorite 😂
Also, just to add something for Bofur, I think he would be an ABSOLUTE GOD at making shadow puppets
Ya know, almost everyone can do the basics like a rabbit and dog, but this dwarf can make crazy shit like a deer, butterflies, he even did AZOG a few times
Don't even ask me how 😳
So completely different subject, but now let's just talk about our 2 favorite grandpa's, Gandalf and Balin 😌💗
I have a secret about them....
They have a club
And what about, you may ask?
Shipping the member of their company
Now these two have been around longer than anyone else in their travelling party, so they are not oblivious to young blossoming romance
Typically they don't talk about it that much, but whenever they catch you and your love interest, whoever it may be, flirting or lightening up at the mention of each others names
These two just share glances, smile, maybe roll their eyes at your obliviousness
Something like;
Gandalf: " 😏'
Balin: "😌"
And NOBODY EVEN KNOWS (well, maybe you do, but you've decided not to tell anyone)
These two are the definition of subtle hints
And you've dubbed it "The Romance Grandpa's"
And they just laugh at it, but think it suits very well, though they insist it's not a club, just a 2 part insight
Elrond may have even gotten in on it too 😂
So everyone knows that the Company loves stories
Whether it be telling or listening, they are just in love
So, when they get tired of listening to the same old tale of Smaug claiming Erebor, they turn to you,
who just so happens to have an endless supply of Disney and fantasy movies locked in your brain by childhood memories
So ofc, you're going to tell them all about princes, princesses, magic, etc.
Their personal favorites are The Princess Bride and Beauty and The Beast
Were very confused about Snow White and the Seven Dwarves,
So now Fili, Kili, Bofur, and Dwalin WILL NOT STOP SINGING "HI-HO"
Just walking along the trail to Erebor, those four are singing, and Gloin has decided to add wHISTLING TO THE MIX
Thorin has lost it 😭💀
Okay, so everyone knows that Ori is more than exceptional at art
I mean, he's just so talented with his hand in drawing and painting
I feel like he would write some form of fanfiction as well
Ya know, maybe not like x reader stuff, but just sweet little fluffy stories about him and the fair dwarrow/dwarrowdam he fell in love within the blue mountains 🥴💗
(Or about him and you, given the circumstances 😉)
I also feel that Bilbo and Dori are secretly very good at art, they just haven't really discovered it yet!
Maybe Bilbo, at drawing his home, the plants he grows in his garden or the occasional bluebird that will perch on his window in the morning
And Dori would just make beautiful paintings of his brothers, more drawn towards things like scenery (lakes forests etc.)
Now, a while back, I had a list of headcanons that included characters who would have their nails painted (per the anti toxic-masculinity movement)
But I feel that I could have added more characters, say Ori, Bofur and most certainly Bilbo
ESPECIALLY ORI
He just lives the color, the shine, maybe even the smell of nail polish, and watching you concentrate on painting them 🥺
And he's also VERY good at painting your nails as well, so that's a win-win
Speaking of beauty...
every
single
one
of these boys are suckers for flower crowns
It doesn't matter if they pretend not to, grumble, complain when you put the crowns on their head,
THEY LOVE FLOWER CROWNS 💐
Forever and always
You, Fili, Kili, Dori, and Ori are usually the ones making them near the campfire or in the road when you see a bundle of them as you pass
And Thorin just nods his head, maybe rolls his eyes, and smirks whenever you give one to him (#dramaking)
Dwalin just "hmphs"
Gandalf smiles and thanks you (#1 grandpa, next to Balin 😌)
And Bifur really appreciates flower crowns as well
Teaching bofur how to make flower crowns 😩
It's like a little craft club on a rainy day!! (And Nori loves it more than anything since it keeps Mother Hen Dori occupied, rather than bossing him around 🙄)
Now let's focus on the leader of our company, since he needs his spotlight!
Thorin is AMAZING at getting/making gifts for people
I don't even know how, but he is!!
You know how he never let go of that grudge with the fucking Mirkwood elves?
Yeah, that memory of his comes in handy when it comes to birthdays and Holidays (Durin's Day for example)
One day, you had been feeling stories of home, and how you dearly missed your old stuffed animal
So on your birthday, Thorin had asked for help from the company to gather their supplies and skills together
And made you a new one 😩💜🥺
Dori sewed, Dwalin hunted for the fur, Bofur made it a little wooden hat, Fili and Kili put little braids on the top of its head, Ori gave it a little bow of ribbon
And so, on your next birthday, they all presented you with this ADORABLE lion stuffed animal and you just fUCKING CRIED, HOLY SHIT-
All in all, the company may have some quirks, some oddities, yes
But their your company
And that means they'll forever love you, and you them
Because that's what family's for 💗💗
(And throwing spiders at Kili 😈💗)

"Trash of the Count's Family" Review Series: Chapter 1
Trash of the Count's Family Manhwa: Chapter 1
Regarding spoilers: I am writing my reviews from the perspective of someone who knows the whole story of TCF Part 1. However, I will try my best to avoid giving away future twists and plot points, and will only allude to things being hidden or explored later on. I hope that is okay with everyone.
Tumblr media
We start with the image of burning candles on a golden chandelier – once again reminding the audience that this family is loaded.
Someone calls out for Cale, and I noticed that the order of events is switched here from the webnovel. There Cale is woken up by Ron, and becomes aware of his transmigration right in front of him, calling out "Cale Henituse?" in confusion, making Ron think he is drunk. I admit the manhwa handled it with a bit more grace, making the scene flow more naturally by having Ron arrive while Cale is in the bathroom. It's always a bit awkward when a transmigrator obviously acts out-of-character and yet the people closest to them don't seem to realize it.
Speaking of awkward: I decided to make an awkward-meter. From now on, I'll be ranking awkwardness on the scale of 1-5. 1 is barely noticeable, 5 is extremely obvious. It's mostly for all the upcoming "no-eyes" or "one-eye" shots. And trust me: there will be A LOT of them.
There are a couple of images where Cale is wet from the bath – yes, fanservice once again – but I'd like to focus on how well the water drops and puddles are drawn. The water isn't colored blue, so there will be moments in the future when it'll be difficult for the author to make it visible when someone gets drenched. However, it still looks quite realistic. Well done.
Next we see Ron Molan for the first time. I've seen some fanart drawing him with a mustache, which made me wonder if he was ever described with it in the novel. However, I never found any evidence of it. Thus, it makes sense that Ron doesn't have a mustache or a beard, even though those are considered quite "butler-y" to have.
While Ron's smile is perfectly polite, the artist somehow managed to convey a sense of danger and slyness in it: I'm truly impressed. On the surface he might seem like a nice old man, but as Cale explains to us, Ron is a skilled assassin with a merciless nature.
Cale acts nonchalant while making plans to send this dangerous man off with the protagonist of "The Birth of a Hero", Choi Han. Ron gives him a sideways look which simply screams "Danger!!!", so Cale is understandably anxious.
Another servant comes in (is it Hans? It seems like Hans... But I'm not 100% sure, since he wears a different uniform later on) and Cale is dressed up for the day. Due to his request of something simple to wear, Cale gets a white shirt with a frill. Cale admires himself and decides that the body he's in can make any clothes look attractive, and let's be honest here – he is 100% correct. Cale Henituse is a looker.
Cale passes a number of servants on his way (once again emphasizing how freaking rich this family is) and – oh look, it's those lamps on the left! The lamp which Choi Han used to beat up OG Cale in the last chapter! Haha, I guess those things are popular. I dub thee the Lamp of Enlightment, lol!
A servant nervously stutters when greeting Cale and he's displeased with the realization that she's scared of him (btw, the disgusted face he makes honestly looks hilarious). Cale contemplates OG Cale's character once again, noting that he wasn't known for hitting servants: he was trash because he liked to drink and play. While it all sounds very simple and straight-forward, for the first time the audience gets the sense that there is something more going on with OG Cale's reputation. Why is he regarded as such a scary individual if he didn't hit his servants? An element of mystery behind Cale's predecessor slowly enters the scene.
Cale decides it's for the better if other people leave him alone. He enters the dining room where his family is waiting for him.
I once read an interesting post on twitter regarding the meaning behind the sitting places in this image. While I think it might have been unintentional on the artist's part, it's still something neat to talk about. The table has 10 places ready (for some reason...? I don't get why there would be set dishes for empy seats. Maybe it's supposed to be a Rich People Thing), with Count Deruth sitting at the opposite end on the table. His wife, Violan, Cale's step-mother, sits on Deruth's right, while Cale's younger siblings – Basen and Lily – sit on his left. However, there is an empty space between Deruth and Violan, implying that it was left for Cale. Whether OG Cale usually took that spot or not is unknown, but if one were to read deeper into this, we could conclude that it symbolizes Cale's status in the family as Deruth's rightful heir... which directly contradicts the information Cale provides us in his next inner monologue.
Cale tells us that his step-mother and siblings avoid him and apparently find him difficult to handle, judging by their scrutinizing stares. Of course, there's the possibility of Cale being an unreliable narrator here and sees only what he wishes to see. He expresses that it's the perfect environment for him to live alone quietly; however, he doesn't consider the very likely possibility that they're only looking at him like that because he's acting WEIRD. Being literally a stranger to them all, Cale takes a seat at the end of the table, far away from everyone else. If OG Cale usually sat between Deruth and Violan, then no wonder they would take notice.
And now, finally what I've been waiting for: let the Misunderstandings(TM) begin!
Cale eats some sausage and smiles thinking how juicy it is. That by itself is apparently quite unusual, as Basen looks completely shocked at seeing Cale smile. Cale remains oblivious to it.
The Count hesitantly adresses Cale, who comments that the food is delicious. Cale's father is shocked by this, as he had been expecting Cale to say that it tastes like trash. Despite his confusion, Deruth nervously expresses joy that his son is enjoying the meal. Cale casually returns the sentiment, much to the consternation of everyone else. Cale is unaware of the atmosphere and thinks how nice it is to be trash as no one is criticizing his manners.
Cale has no intention to be the Count's heir, as it would be a complicated life which would take a lot of work. He'd rather peacefully laze around as the Count's older brother. Meanwhile Basen is nervously looking at him, and has no idea that Cale is currently plotting on shifting the Lord of Territory position onto him. Cale thinks it's a forgone conclusion, since his character is "trash". But things with this family do not appear so simple from an outsider's perspective.
Cale, you oblivious potato... you should learn to read the room!
Anyway, Cale finishes his meal and Deruth asks if there's anything he wants. Cale thinks for a short moment before asking for ✨money✨. We learn that Cale very much likes money. Deruth agrees as Cale's siblings watch Cale with confusion in the background. They look so cute.
Cale's "innocent" smile switches to the image of Cale being completely shocked at the amount of money he recieved from the Count. Cale realizes just how unbelievably rich this household is, and starts to reconsider his options.
Cale asks Ron about the date, and Ron informs him that it's the 29th of the third month in the 781st year of the Felix Calendar. Basically – it's March 29th, 781. Cale realizes he has to hurry, as Choi Han will soon arrive in the city.
And that's the end of the chapter! It was very nice, I liked it even more than the last one. The art style is gorgeous, and the comedy comes across very well. There were no particularly awkward shots in this chapter, and every person's clothing style was different and unique, even the servants. It was very well done. Loved it!
Feel free to leave comments!
