"You did it," Neil says, too stunned to manage anything else. "Let Riko be King," Kevin says, with the exaggerated enunciation of the thoroughly sloshed. "Most coveted, most protected. He'll sacrifice every piece he has to protect his throne. Whatever. Me?" Kevin gestures again, meaning to indicate himself but too drunk to get his hand higher than his waist. "I'm going to be the deadliest piece on the board." "Queen," Andrew says somewhere behind Neil. Neil hadn't heard him get out of bed, but of course the bang of the door would have woken him. A sober Andrew is as light a sleeper as Neil was, maybe moreso because Andrew was used to unfriendly people sneaking into his room. Neil looks back at him, but Andrew is studying Kevin.

It felt like bit like falling and a bit like flying. Neil's stomach bottomed out a second before adrenaline flooded his veins.

"You did it," Neil said, too stunned to manage anything else.

"Let Riko be King," Kevin said, either the exaggerated enunciation of the thoroughly sloshed. "Most coveted, most protected. He'll sacrifice every piece he has to protect his throne. Whatever. Me?" Kevin gestured again, meaning to indicate himself but too drunk to get his hand higher than his waist. "I'm going to be the deadliest piece on the board."

"Fuck him," Kevin said, sliding a little further down the door. "Fuck all of them. Waste of time to be angry. They should be afraid."

Neil: proceeds to shake with excitement.

Andrew: smiles for the first time since he got off the drugs.

Andreil: proceeds to make out.

Kevin Day. People are fine with Neil reacting to his trauma by running, fine with Andrew's violence and numbness. But Kevin Day. He's the butt of a joke.

Kevin's reaction to his trauma, the drinking, the intense fear. It's brushed off as cowardice. It's not. It's a substance abuse disorder and panic attacks.

And even that, is in almost constantly direct response to being forced to continue facing his abuser every couple of months.

And to his credit, by the end of the books, Kevin figures that shit out. He covers his tattoo, he talks shit about the Ravens, comes clean about his broken hand, and meets Riko on the court with nothing but courage and determination. He faces him the fuck down with his left hand. Riko broke his hand, broke Kevin's psyche, and he still manages to come back from all of it in full force.

Kevin spent close to a decade in the Nest. He never says specifically the abuse he endured there, but we can infer based on how Riko treated Jean and Neil. That's years of brainwashing, physical and mental torture. Jean himself tried to run back twice after Renee got him out. It makes sense Kevin was so torn between the Foxes and Riko, makes sense he would need Andrew to keep him from bolting. It's not cowardice, it's survival.

The fact that he is able to overcome that is testament to his strength. He never should have had to, but he did. Give him some fucking credit for that shit. He looked death in the face and said "fuck you, I'm not giving in." Said "let Riko be king, I'm going to be the deadliest piece on the board."

Kevin was drunk when he got the tattoo, but it's made clear it wasn't an impulsive decision. It wasn't the alcohol, or a spur of the moment thing. It was decided sober, when he looked in the mirror in the locker room and covered the tattoo in his reflection. It was fucking guts. He knew what it meant, that there was no going back, but he did it because Kevin is fucking BRAVE.

Maybe he needed help from Neil and Andrew to realize he was, but he did that. Neil needed Andrew to stop running, Andrew needed Neil and Kevin to let people in and prove giving a shit about anything was worth it. The fact is that sometimes you need other people, Kevin is no different. But when he's given just a little bit of support, we see who he really is.

And that's someone who doesn't back down, who has to overcome insurmountable odds in order to achieve his goals and does it anyway, someone who has to make hard choices and doesn't flinch in the face of them. It's someone who was forced to be brave and endure and meets it like a challenge. It's someone who didn't ask to suffer so much but bears it anyway with strength (and maybe too much vodka). It's someone who takes shit head on even though it will probably smash his skull to bits and survives it anyway.

Kevin bears his weakness more obviously than the others. It's easier to see. His strength is less obvious, fine. But it's there. And in ample fucking amounts. Kevin is anything but a coward, and anything but meek. He's a force of fucking nature. He's a man in an impossible situation but manages to navigate it anyway. He's a man facing death and laughing in it's face, a man building a future he has to fight for tooth and nail.

oh nonny !!! THANK you !!!! i've been waiting for someone to ask me this !!!! I've been listening to a lot of kevin songs lately, he just makes me so emotional!!! He's such a complex character full of opposites- he's brave and also a little bit of a coward. he's completely egotistical but also he tries to bring everyone else up with him. he has a singularly one track mind for exy also scared of failure to a fault. i also think a lot about his relationship with riko and how that messed up his sense of self. he's got a lot going on!!! i just love that neurotic little guy!!
