god i wish they hadn't retconned maul's death. i get wanting to explore more of his character because he was, objectively, one of the coolest star wars characters to ever hit the big screen and didn't get much screentime prior to his death, but also his role was fulfilled perfectly within those constraints so i wasn't too upset by it.
but by retconning it and making it so he never died it's like. okay. what now? the whole point (well, to me, ymmv of course) of the theed generator fight was that it was the first ever fight between the jedi and the sith in thousands of years, and that in the end even though the jedi (obi-wan) won the fight, a jedi (qui-gon) and a sith (maul) still died. a master and an apprentice dying together to herald the start of a new age/the return of the sith. perfectly paralleling the way in rotj a master (palps) and an apprentice (anakin/vader) died together to herald the return of the jedi. in both instances, a father figure (qui-gon/vader) dies in the arms of their son (obi-wan/luke) as a sith (palps/maul) is cast down into the abyss to their deaths. (palps being alive in the ST and retconning his death in rotj is also annoying for this reason)
i mean i like maul. don't get me wrong. he's an incredibly compelling character and i enjoy seeing more of him... but there's always the thought hovering in my mind like "he should be dead though. he should 100% be dead. this wouldn't be happening if he was dead, but i honestly would rather it not if it meant that maul was dead."
like the tpm fight just doesn't hit the same knowing that canonically he's just. going to become a robot octopus at some point. (shoutout to palps becoming sith glados in the ST) it cheapens the moment for me. it was supposed to be a moment of triumph marred by the deep and soul-crushing loss of a loved one and it's just... not, anymore. or at least not to the same extent. AUGH i'm just. frustrated. wish star wars as a whole wasn't constantly reframing/retconning what's been established. just puts a bad taste in my mouth.

The Monk and the Monkey
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
''What are you?'' The monk asks the animal- no, the creature before him. It stands on its hind legs without any trouble nor struggle. It does not hunch, it does not move. He watches it warily, and his eyes struggle to maintain eye contact, and not to stare at the way he has been carried away from. Where the carcass of the enormous tiger that stands fallen, in a pool of blood and the heavy smell of the metallic blood that he no longer can see or smell.
But to get distracted in the human’s case, would be a mistake if not the being was quite happy yet best not to risk it.
One second, it stares and the next, it stands before him with a bright grin and a tilted head. He startles, dropping his staff as it opens its dangerous jaw to answer his question.
''I am many things,'' It starts speaking, and the Monk thinks it can see the silhouette of a monster behind, watching, in smokes and another thing, another thing that smiles, amused while the human starts to sweat, his palms getting colder and colder.
‘’A wicked demon,’’ It states, grinning with a mouth far too wide, and a grin far too sharp, while the monk gulps with tense shoulders.
‘’A celestial being,’’ It states, as it smiles with gratitude, and a smile full of joy, and the monk relaxes, without being aware, for its genuine smile resembles that of a child a bit too much, tricking him into a false sense of security.
A false sense of security it is,
For a shark may be content, but it still has a mouth full of sharp teeth and a hunger for blood when you cut open your heart and lay it bare.
‘’But moreover, I am human.’’ It says, shrugging and standing back while the monk stares. He continues to stare as it stares up at him, with its tail lazily swaying behind it. He is well aware that he should probably try to find a way to leave, instead of interacting with it, but he blurts out without thinking before his mind can catch up with him.
‘’H-human? Y-you don’t look human!’’ He exclaims, and rightfully so as well, for the being standing before him is a tad bit too hairy, with hands instead of feet and of course, not to mention, the tail it has!
‘’...’’ It stares at him in silence, and it looks up and down while he nervously shuffles.
‘’Your close minded view, as much as it amazes me, is also disappointing.’’ It finally states after an awkward amount of silence and the monk can only drape his bamboo hat over his face, halfway to avoid eye contact since it unnerves him and says nothing to refute its claims more so because he is too meek to argue with a creature who can topple over a demon four times its size.
‘’Tell me what is a god, and what is a demon?’’ It asks, and the monk has no answer which seems to frustrate the creature before him as it invades his personal space once again, forcing him to stare right into its bloody eyes with the moon in them.
The monk stutters as it sighs, snapping its fingers and the human sees magic come to life before his eyes.
‘’A god represents the ‘kind’ side of humanity, while a demon represents the ‘foul’,’’ It says with a crescent smile but a condescending tone, and the monk steps back as his eyes jump back and forth between the mirrored version of the creature.
‘’Here’s a riddle for you,’’ It doesn't look at him as it becomes one, but he thinks it might see inside him anyway.
‘’If I am both, then what am I?’’
The silence scratches on, as tiny crickets pass, and the forest quiets down as if to listen to his answer.
It's a lot of pressure, he thinks when he sees it watching him like a hawk, like the rest of the world that holds its breath.
The human thinks as he lowers his head and thinks. He eventually comes to an answer as opens his mouth as the being before him stares at him nonchalantly, yet with a slightly wagging tail, clearly full of expectations about his answer.
‘’A monkey?’’
The monk, obviously, plays it safe for he feels like this is a trap.
The monkey’s nose scrunches up, and his eyes squint.
‘’Hmph,’’ It- He almost sneers at the human. His eyebrow twitch, irritated, and his tail thumps the ground once, twice and stops still. The monk, for a second, thinks he almost might see a pout.
‘’Typical mortals.’’
He says with distaste and the Monk, Tang Sanzang, can only stare at the tiny murder monkey and think:
What are the chances that if I beg, he’ll leave me alone?’
But the monk can only weep for it will be a long fourteen years.

I don’t know if it’s already been said but istg romancing Astarion as Durge is just giving him scary dog privileges. You should’ve seen me siccing my massive sorcerer Dragonborn on anyone who manages to hit Astarion. Like always in dialogues I’m looking over at him and being like ‘bbg what do you think about this?’

This song is making me want to start yet another fic to never finish,, "Tell me... Where is your hideout? Who are we running from? I'm starting to think that you were right, and now I'm afraid of letting go of your hand...." Maul giving up on his Mandalore plan and deciding to just stalk Kenobi to tell him about his vision. Staying illegally in Obi-Wan's room because I love putting these guys in situations (and because Maul would NOT leave him alone until Obi-Wan actually accepted Maul is right, which he won't). Following Obi-Wan to Utapau and helping him escape after the clones attack, feeling equal parts vindicated and enraged (because he was proved right but Sidious still won). Them being on the run together....

Your Thrawn takes (concluding the debate)
Tumblr media
From a poll I did yesterday. You can check out the post on my profile. I’m tempted to do a longer one to get a more accurate result… but that’s it for now! Thanks for participating.
100% people
No character, unless they’re a pure villain, is fully immoral. It’s an interesting viewpoint to take on a character like Thrawn who has undoubtedly done moral actions. Perhaps you view something he did as so immoral it negotiated all of this for you?
Another thing that people seem to not realise: ‘good morals’ and ‘good character’ are not synonymous. If somebody tells you a character that you like has done bad things, don’t take it personally! Nuance is what makes characters interesting. I love characters like Maul and Mahito (jjk) purely because they are completely selfish and atrociously evil. I’m not gonna get sad if someone says, ‘how can you like them they’re evil?’ A huge reason why I like them because they’re evil. Duh. Characters like that are fascinating. That person does not understand the implications of characters as storytelling tools (another reason I would argue it’s so important to analyse critically - you’ll take everything personally otherwise and not be able to appreciate this). Maybe you can help them realise that the character isn’t fully immoral, but is actually an anti-villain or an anti-hero. By having these discussions properly (instead of just getting annoyed and shutting them down) we will realise that, wow, 80% of people have the same view (that’s most of you).
I’m repeating myself again here, but I’d also like to stress the importance of expectations when people post about a story or character. Somebody who makes a post about one particular aspect of a story or character that leans towards more moral or immoral is probably not going to give a balanced judgement of the entire work or characterisation. You’ll realise by responding that, oops, they actually do understand everything you do, it’s just this post was about one small thing and you took it as their entire bias. My post criticising the Ascendancy’s use of child soldiers received a response generalising the fandom as people who are obsessed with analysing morality and think Thrawn is this horrific pure evil character. No… that’s not what I said! (And the morality part, that’s a bad thing?)
This annoys me people
7 people picked the last option, which does make me sad if it’s because they’re frustrated by the type of arguments that seem to arise from this topic and don’t want to engage anymore. Having these better discussions would probably help this. Hopefully they do understand the value of morality in literature analysis in general. It can be an important tool to assess whether one character is more effective than another, to illustrate the themes of your story, and much much more.
Some people view stories are purely for entertainment and not for any intellectual purpose, but I disagree and don’t understand this. I would find stories unbelievably boring that way. If you disagree that’s your personal preference, and I will not change my mind because this is mine, so DNI please.
Conclusion of the debate
The conclusion of the debate is… well, critical analysis (including of the moralality kind) is required to understand what really makes a character a good character.
Thrawn is such an incredibly fascinating character, I think, because of his moral ambiguity. Why does Death Note fascinate people? Take the moral debate out of Death Note and you render the entire story meaningless. There would be nothing. There wouldn’t even be a story. I feel like this is obvious.

What do you think about Maul training Qi'ra? Does it seem out of character to you?
Absolutely not out of character!
If there's one trait that Maul has shown again and again, it's the yearning he has to pass on his knowledge to an apprentice. He embraced the chance with Savage, and with Ahsoka and Ezra he genuinely made himself look stupid trying to get them to be his apprentices/partners-in-crime/whatever. His failed attempts to reach out of them left him deeply emotional vulnerable, even if he's too damaged to really understand why he ultimately failed to win them over. Because he himself cannot relate to a bond between master and apprentice that isn't exploitative and coercive, he continuously fails to internalize that actually, they would prefer him NOT to kill their existing masters.
Additionally, Maul wants to outdo Sidious in some way. As much as he puts on a front of being superior to others, there have been many indications that he feels lesser. Maul also sees having an apprentice as an opportunity to put himself in a position of authority over someone, and in some ways cope with his abuse by placing himself in Sidious' position.
(That being said, Maul was never abusive to Savage, even if he was often kind of a dick. I think he has a greater capacity for sincerity and affection than he even realizes. But even in that relationship, Maul made the hierarchy very clear with the threat of violence. But once Savage accepted that dynamic, Maul was very relaxed with him.)
So with Qi'ra specifically, if Maul saw her potential, he would absolutely be willing to train her. Qi'ra is also more likely to actually accept that dynamic with Maul readily, without other bonds in her life interfering. Her own goals are also well aligned well with Maul's, and I feel their temperments would be well-matched.
I think the biggest threat to their dynamic would probably be that Qi'ra is ambitious and clever, and she would potentially either outgrow or use Maul to her own ends. I could see them becoming rivals eventually (as is the nature of Sith, honestly). But I could just as easily see them being permanently collaborative partners. After all, Qi'ra is going to outlive Maul either way, and I could their relationship being positive until his death, in which case she would inherit his authority and power.
I'm most interested in what capacity he would train her, though. He would likely be impressed with her fighting prowess and her grit, but would it be more tied to her being crime lord, or would he choose to train her as a Sith? After the Ahsoka series, it's interesting to imagine Maul trying to pass on his teachings to someone who isn't Force sensitive, for lack of better options. It's good food for thought!

Honestly, Man-Bat would be such a horrifying creature to stumble across in Gotham? At 8'6, he is HUGE, strong enough to carry off a man in his claws while barely slowing down. He might lack the same intelligence he had as Kirk Langstrom but Man-Bat still has keen problem-solving intellect such as picking up an entire wooden desk and throwing it at Batman to hold him in place long enough for an easy bite to the throat. It's that uncanny area between what was once human vs. a hyperpredator making Man-Bat one of the most dangerous creatures to cross whether he's simply hungry enough or has developed a grudge against you for some reason. You can't outrun him and there aren't many places you can hide because not only can he fly, he's able to squeeze into places you yourself would be able to fit into.
