Dunno if you've answered this but what are our Mafia men like drunk? How often do they do so? How high are their tolerances?

you know what, this is only fair since we've been talking about the girls and them being drunk lmao

mafia!Price probably drinks the most out of all of them, but doesn't drink so much to the point that he gets drunk. he likes to have a pint after a hard days worth of work and whatnot, so alcohol is probably in his daily/weekly diet. because of this, i imagine he has a higher tolerance than normal, but not like, anything too high. when he does get drunk, i imagine he's pretty smiley. maybe not all that talkative but he's a good listener. and the staring. jfc this man and his blue eyes. if you're in the room, he's staring at you. thinking about you. touching you if he can. wants you in his lap, wants his lips on your skin. and if you're not in the room? or anywhere close? he's texting you. wanting to call you. just wants to listen to you. he def strikes me as a sappy sort of drunk (which is probably why he doesn't get drunk all that often lmao) and he just wants to be close to you ):

mafia!Simon probably has the highest tolerance out of all of them, simply for his size if anything else. he enjoys his whiskey every now and then, but i feel like he very rarely gets plastered or anything. always been put off by it because of how his dad acted when he was drunk. if he were to get drunk, though, i'd imagine he'd be pretty loud. not like, shouting and yelling loud but just... his voice is booming. that is, if he does talk, otherwise he's on a goddamn mission to play pool, darts, or what have you. the man cannot and will not sit still. i also feel like he'd be a sleepy drunk lmao. like he'll be moving around and doing all this shit, but the moment he's sitting on a couch or leaning on the counter, he's dozing off. his poor liver is working overtime to process the godawful amount of alcohol he had to shove into his system. because of that, he uses you as his personal stuffed animal when he's drunk. oh, you're cuddling and now you're too warm? maybe you're suffocating a little? too bad. try again come morning.

mafia!Gaz is a fucking lightweight. i'm sorry. he really is. the guy is really proud of his physique, and he works out a lot at the gym, and going out for beers all the time won't really do him much good. besides, it's rare that he does go out, and drinking alone feels depressing, so why bother? but when he does get drunk? this man will not shut the fuck up. he's already got a nice voice but when it's all groggy from the alcohol? god, it's impossible to not fall in love with. and he'll just talk about anything. he'll respond to something you say with something completely unrelated to what you had brought up in the first place. he also will use his drunkenness to get out his real thoughts. sure he can talk a big game when he's sober, but he is going to tell you that you smell nice and that he likes your hair and that he wouldn't mind bending you over the couch, whoops.

mafia!Soap has a pretty high tolerance simply because he drinks so goddamn much. he'd probably be right under Simon as far as tolerances go. and this man is loud. like, loud because he's yelling. he's watching footie on the tv. he's playing pool with Simon. he's yelling about both of them. he's trying to get Kyle to take a shot with him. he's asking Price about his beard. he's whispering to you how he wants to eat you out in the bathroom. he's the hard party guy, probably the most akin to a frat boy. but once he hits that point where his tummy feels sick? he's the biggest fucking baby ever. wants you to run your fingers through his hair, wants forehead kisses, wants to rest his head on your thighs, he wants it all. you have to force him to drink water. have to tuck the man into bed like a toddler. it's endearing for a little while, but you get a bit annoyed with it once he starts throwing up lmao.

jimmy from what i am meagerly piecing together had an OK upbringing and parents that "looked after him" but i think found his disability shameful and secretly kind of felt burdened by having a child who needed so much medical care? like emotionally and financially?

i think they probably saw him more as a way to get sympathy, sort of treated him like an object/joke sometimes...and the saddest people are often the funniest so i think he sort of ran with "well if everyones laughing with you, theyre not laughing at you" :( jimmy my beloved im so...but i would say there's trauma there. this show better sweep at the emmys jfc

like i don’t care about awards but andor has some of the best writing of a tv show i have seen in like YEARS, along with the gorgeous sets/props/etc, and the MUSIC??? unreal. plus every actor OWNS their shit so far, there’s been no misses (looking at you, g*na c*r*no in mando lol even before we knew she was a horrible person I was always like... she can’t act why is she here). i mean diego luna is ALWAYS on point but I mean he’s also giving so much space for others to shine in his own show: adria arjona broke me in episode 3, stellan skarsgård has blown me away in every scene he is in, genevieve o’reilly has nailed the vibes of the landed gentry liberal, denise gough, kyle soller, faye marsay, anton lesser with his tarkin levels of imperial officiousness - and we haven’t seen gotten to forrest fucking whittaker yet, who has already played saw multiple times and did it well so you KNOW he’s gonna kill with saw at his prime (and also at one of his most heartbroken moments, having likely just left jyn behind given the time frame). and of course fiona shaw, who did well but I feel like every person - even like smaller characters - have been on that level of really good.

I hope to god the show gets word of mouth viewers, I hope it gets the viewership it deserves because IMO it’s the best thing on right now. it’s not just an example of good representation (so far) and good politics (SO FAR) but it’s an example of what can be done when creatives are given time, space and control of their works - while still being kept accountable to the source material - and of course a hefty budget. disney should not be producing flops. disney should be producing this level of quality because disney has the resources and power to do it. it doesn’t always need to be mature and dark and gritty, but they have no reason to be putting out mediocre rushed trash. they need to pay their workers properly, treat them with respect and dignity, and give their creatives what they need to make great things.

I think every frame reveals that the show is a labor of love.

that doesn’t mean I don’t have my critiques but it is so nice to have a few critiques and not like full blown ben-affleck-with-the-cigarette meme disappointment.

Where do I even begin with Maria.

Season 1

Makes a joke about Alex's secret relationship being with Wyatt and finding it funny- (Wyatt who is an abusive racist dude who commits hate crimes and bear in mind she knows Alex was abused for being gay) IT'S GROSS.

Speaks about Alex's secret relationship guy being his home to Alex and literally feels his hopefulness because it is part of her alien ability and continues to pursue Michael in s2.

Maria (straight) outs Michael to Liz. That's not okay on any level.

When Liz tells Maria to speak to Alex before doing anything she ignores the advice and does what she wants.

She's really smug about Michael picking/pursuing her like she won.

Season 2

Pursues Michael at a funeral in front of Alex without talking to him.

Makes Michael's loved ones husband funeral about a relationship status

Slut shames a random woman who makes out with Michael when they were never exclusive

Enters a relationship with Michael where he has to be exclusive but she doesn't because she doesn't believe he could be faithful. That's reeks of harmful biphobia stereotypes.

Ignores Alex the whole time UNTIL she needs something.

When she appears at Alex's door she says they are even. AKA comparing Alex not telling her a secret that wasn't his to share to her pursuing the love of his life in front of him without any empathy and ignoring the whole time.

Bitches to Alex about Liz and wanting fuck all to do with her. Alex has to remind her Liz has a dead boyfriend and is struggling cause Maria only has Maria vision and lacks empathy for her 'best friends'.

Uses her mom's laptop to get the scope on Alex/Michael's relationship which reads 100% manipulative. She even says Michael is pushing you away and then proceeds to encourage the narrative where Michael pushes Alex away because she suddenly wants Michael. And of course Alex is supportive she recognises he lacks self worth and rolls over him.

Beginning of 2x06 she tries to set up Forlex to get Alex away from Michael. Once again manipulative.

Tries to make Alex feel guilty for being gay in 206 because when she was a kid she idealised being with him and had to come up with a whole new plan. He grew up in an abusive household you know that....It's not okay to say that. You know how much internalised homophobia he has.

When saying he's had good relationships provides only examples of relationships with women......................HE IS GAY.

Asks him if he would change being gay.......jfc.

Alex tearfully saying he dissociates with women because he clearly forced himself to out of internalised phobia, Maria takes it to mean she has a chance. She thinks she's the exception since a touch starved abuse victim liked to be touched by her in high school. That doesn't = consent.

When Alex, a whole ass Airforce Captain tells her it's unsafe to stay at the creepo's place she acts all I am feminist about it and this results in Alex being stabbed and Michael getting whacked on the head.

Earlier in the episode she whinges to Alex about Michael kissing another woman in front of her and how cruel it was and then proceeds to kiss Michael in front of Alex KNOWING how he feels for Michael.

In THAT scene it's clear she notices Michael's emotions towards Alex and is insecure about it. She uses Malex's feelings for each other to her advantage. She's chasing the fantasy of getting with Alex. These are two highly traumatised queer men who struggle to say no because they spent their lives in abusive environments.

Neither Michael or Alex were in a position to consent to sex that night Michael is concussed from a whack on the head . Alex has lost a lot of blood and is completely out of it. And neither would ever initiate that situation. Not to mention the assumption Michael would be down because he's bi is so harmful as a stereotype.

"I think she’s cool with her decision. She wanted some answers, so subconsciously there was an emotional comfort she needed. But she also had a little bit of an agenda. She needed some decisions made about the status of their relationships, so she thought, “Let’s throw everything against the wall and see where it lands.” I think she was just wondering if they made any progress on that front. She said it was OK for their feelings to be out in the open, but let’s just voice them for what they are. As we saw, Michael stepped up and was like, “No, I still love you and I’m with you.” Secretly, that’s what Maria was hoping for. By suggesting a threesome, she’s was basically telling Michael, “Make your choice… and I hope it’s me.” this is what Heather said about the scene. So not only was it coercive and such but she used her best friend like that with no care or empathy whatsoever. It's disgraceful.

The next day both Michael and Alex are confused by what the fuck happened. Alex due to his C-PTSD completely dissociates from the situation and Michael attempts to laugh it off despite him being hella confused. The only person who isn't confused is Maria who is listening to them from inside.

When Michael comes in she turns on the tears just in case he does want Alex afterwards. Bear in mind she is a psychic who can feel everything and she assumed Michael was going to go after Alex. Doesn't that say it all. SHE KNOWS MICHAEL IS IN LOVE WITH ALEX AND VICE VERSA. She does not care, because at the end of the day this is what she wants. She wants to win. She wants to treat Michael like this trophy that she can show off to people I got the great Michael Guerin not a relationship guy to date me.

When Michael wants to have emotional conversations she shuts it down for sex. The entirety of the relationship it has to be her way or the high way. She also recognises fairly on his abandonment issues and plays upon it, reads manipulative.

When Michael who has lost his mom and brother in the span of a few months asks Maria to be more careful about her abilities she doesn't listen. And ultimately breaks up with Michael when she can't get what she wants from him which is a yes man who will do what she says and isn't the idealised Michael she wants.

Season 3

Shits on Michael any chance she gets. She's so mean to him and he goes out of his way to look out for her.

Is dismissive of her own health despite the fact that everybody goes out of their way to help her. Liz is in California working on a way to help her. Kyle is risking his job.etc

Is fine with Liz, her best friend losing the love of her life to get a vision to prevent a murder. A vision she's only invested in because apparently in it she blames herself.

Is fine with Max or Kyle dealing with the guilt of her death had Michael not saved her.

Shoves Michael and belittles him because he's stronger then her. Infers he just sits on his ass and does nothing therefore does not care about anything....rude. There's also a weird superiority complex that her power is more important then Michaels or any of pod squad for that matter.

Creates a situation that is so bad that Kyle risks his doctors licence to give her adrenaline. Just take an ice bath or something there are a 1000 ways to give yourself adrenaline without risking your life and risking others.

Doesn't thank or acknowledge what Liz is doing for her honey has spent a FULL YEAR of her life trying to help and your just like yeah I'll let her soulmate die for my visions.

Emotionally guilts Isobel for not hanging out with her despite the fact she's hated her for two seasons and now has just randomly decided she wants to know......okay

This idea that Maria is suddenly lonely when she's the second of the main cast (first being Kyle) to have scenes with all the mains by Monday. Literally everyone is there at her beck and call but Maria is lonely??? IT DOESN'T ADD UP. Everyone's up her arse 9/10 how is she lonely everyone expresses concern and care for her ALL THE DAMN TIME. She's also narratively never had scenes that give the connotation that she is lonely. Michael has scenes that connotate he is lonely. Max and Alex do too. Maria has yet to have scenes that give the connotation of feeling lonely or depressed.

Maria comparing the alien siblings to her and feeling left out when she acts superior to them and they are literally siblings. Literally every character is somewhat left out with Pod Squad they've lived their lives assuming it's just them three against the world it's not a personal attack.

As much as the whole Buck/Taylor dynamic has been giving me uncomfortable M*luca 2.0 vibes at least the 911 writers aren't doing that thing where everyone in Buck's life is encouraging their relationship and acting like Taylor is the greatest thing to ever happen to him (even if the show is clearly trying to get us to sympathize with her character to some extent) so I am cautiously optimistic about how the break up will go down. I can't even imagine how much more unbearable things would have been if Eddie, Maddie, Chim or Hen had been written as matchmakers for the two of them the way Alex was forced to be. *shudders*

Okay, but yes exactly?! Like, at least Taylor didn't make a comment about how Buck was housebroken or anything like JFC. Also, the way 911 has glossed over her actions in season 2, and keeps sticking her in places she has no business being is definitely an uncomfortable m*ria/m*luca parallel but you're so right in that even with glossing over Dosed and the fall out from that episode, they haven't had any of the other characters falling at her feet to defend her and talk about how great and amazing she is every second of the day which is nice. Even Buck doesn't spend a lot of time defending her, or talking about her at all to anyone, actually which is also nice.

Now this could be a product of the writers knowing the reporter is not sticking around, so they're doing the bare minimum to make sure people will keep tuning in, and filling up screen time since they were short on other mains, just until her character leaves. I think they did try to work the sympathetic angle a little (or as some people have mentioned, they used Ghost Stories as a backdoor pilot for a new show 🙄🙄🙄 (please detective Lou deserves so much better)), but they absolutely half-assed it because they never put any effort in to addressing her behavior from season 2 and her backstory just makes those actions look worse (still sounding uncomfortably familiar 🙄), so clearly they didn't care about any of it actually making her sympathetic, because she's not sticking around.

Whereas RNM had an issue with a main character they aren't going to be getting rid of (pity), that was superfluous from the start because they didn't put a lot of thought or effort into developing her character. (I stand by the thought that SHE should have been the doctor, not Kyle which would have put her directly working with Liz, being in on the Rosa/alien secret reveal right away, and right in the middle of the action every time they needed an alien doctor. Also with Rosa being her BFF, it would have still had the same impact with her helping Isobel in season 1 when she's dying as it did with Kyle helping Isobel. 🤷‍♀️) Then, after the absolute dumpster fire that happened with her character in season 2, the writers just decided to also sweep her actions under the rug, but with a far more disastrous effect. Because she's a main and works so closely with the people hurt in season 2, and because of the nature of those actions AND the fact that she's known the characters for most of their lives (vs Tay Kay popping up on scene and leveraging people she didn't know to get a better job and happening to be on site during an unprecedented event), plus the fact that it all just happened (where as Tay Kay has been absent from the show for about 2 seasons from mid-2 to mid-4 which is enough time for the GA to forget about a character in part of 2 episodes), "glossing" over the issue was impossible.

And RNM not only tried to gloss over the issue and just...not address it, despite the fact that Michael and Alex's storylines/love story/journey back to each other was heavily effected by her actions (and by Michael's, which they couldn't address because they didn't address hers), but they doubled down in making every character in nearly every scene have to mention how great and wonderful and perfect she is. To the point that she was centered in storylines not about her, or in a way that other characters in more danger and of more immediate importance were forgotten about almost entirely by the rest of the characters in favor of propping her up, and to the point that plotlines that could have easily made sense were twisted around or took up SO much more time than needed in order to cater to her character when she didn't even need to be involved or her actions added nothing to the eventual outcome of the storyline. Hmmm, sound familiar? Kind of like Detective Lou thinking the guy is being shady from the start, coming up with a theory that while partially incorrect still lead him to the hardware store, and the motel room, and to the hitman who confessed so.....what did the reporter add to that? Nothing. Her theory was more correct, but had she been entirely removed from the episode, Detective Lou's investigation would have run exactly the same way, and he would have had exactly the same outcome, except we wouldn't have had to see any of it beyond the rescue of the original guy, and could have watched the Ghost Roommate Call, and firefam shenanigans.

Season 3 of RNM had the same issue in that one tiny tweak to Rosa or Isobel's power to let them have visions would allow them to cut m*ria out of the season entirely and have...exactly the same outcome and everyone having exactly the same information because everything she "contributed" was learned somewhere else by someone else as well 🤷‍♀️

ANYWAY, guess I'm not as over my salty RNM feels as I had hoped. But the bright side is, the 911 writers are actually good at their jobs and hardly ever miss and when they do, they are usually able to turn it around. They have made it perfectly clear on purpose that the reporter is not good for Buck, that he's isolated, lonely, and unsupported/unhappy in the relationship, and that she's going to be leaving soon, and because they have handled Buck's arc with such care for almost 5 seasons now, I've got faith he's going to be the one to break things off and learn the lesson that just any ol' relationship is not enough. And given what we got from Eddie's breakup? Mmmm, I have a feeling it's going to be good!

Have you noticed the thing in fanfics of children's lit where the writer gives the protagonist new parent figures? The parent figures say things like "no child should have had to do x!". PF's don't prevent protagonist from doing heroism but might ground them for it after. Under their care, the protagonist is likely to get a job, often at the business of the PF. Seems less common for the Animorph (more in ATLA and Harry Potter), but if you have seen this, what's going on? Why do writers do this?

Why do writers do this?

Welcome to the fandom renaissance, Nonny!  My best stab as to what’s going on here is that we’re seeing fewer and fewer shipping wars due to a whole range of forces from “the average age of fandom is increasing” to “there’s an ongoing post-monogamy societal shift.”   BUT that there’s still a desire to see relationship-building fic go in the gaps where (for instance) Pro-Jacob Anti-Edward fic used to go.  So instead of writing about Edward and Bella’s romance, people are writing about Edward and Carlisle’s mentorship, or Leah and Rosalie’s friendship.

What’s going on?

Again, a stab in the dark: it’s a really fun story premise, one that can get away from the way ships are sometimes fraught with baggage.  Found Family is intensely cathartic, in the sense that it takes characters who are miserable and/or lonely in canon and allows them to build loving relationships with each other.  It also (IMHO) reflects that trend among Millennial Whippersnappers to move away from nuclear definitions of “family” and toward embracing everything from polyamory to sexless romance to adult adoption.

Not only that, but it’s awesome in that it lets writers play so much with foils.  Stranger Things obviously does this Up to Eleven (pun intended): Steve’s an arrogant jerk when he’s interacting with Nancy but a dorky sweetheart around Dustin, Hopper’s at his worst around Joyce but at his best around El, Billy’s evil to Max but might be redeemable around his mom, etcetera.  This premise gives fan writers the chance to get wildly different characters into a room together — what if the Tonks family adopted Neville Longbottom? — and start playing out the fun potential.

Why Avatar and Harry Potter (but not Animorphs)?

In a word: FOILS.  Both AtLA and Harry Potter are series filled with good, bad, and ugly mentors, and both series have contrasts between the good and the bad.  For AtLA, it’s no accident that Zuko finally reuniting with his father in S3E1 is intercut with the scene of Katara finally reuniting with her father.  Katara’s fam airs their grievances, talks things out, yells, cries, apologizes, forgives, hugs, and affirms their ongoing love.  Zuko’s fam deals with having 500 times as much baggage by... Zuko kowtowing silently on the floor while Ozai talks about everything but their problems with each other.  After that sequence, the desire to get Zuko into a room with Hakoda for some proper fathering is practically overwhelming, and many brilliant fan writers have obliged us by doing exactly that.

For Harry Potter, there’s no scene that’s as in-your-face with the contrast between healthy vs. unhealthy disagreement with one’s father, but there are still plenty of mentor foils.  Sirius and Petunia are probably the clearest examples.  Sirius is a raging mess who (on the surface) has nothing to offer Harry: he’s an ex-con with a drinking problem and untreated mental health issues who spends much of the series homeless.  Petunia has her shit together and (on the surface) is the perfect guardian for Harry: she’s a wealthy full-time parent who lives in a large suburban house, and is both his closest surviving relative and his legal guardian.  But of course all Harry needs from a parent is love and support, and Sirius offers that in spades while Petunia has none to spare.  Again, the desire to rip Harry away from the Dursleys and ship him off to go be a Black is overwhelming, and many beautiful works of fan fiction have done exactly that.

Animorphs... doesn’t have mentor characters.  Like, none.  Elfangor dies, Toby does her own thing, Erek can’t be trusted, neither Ax nor Jake wants to mentor, and all adults are possible controllers.  Eva’s the closest we get, but by the time she’s free, everyone (especially Eva) recognizes that the Animorphs are already more experienced than her.  We don’t even see a dynamic like the Teen Titans show where the villains mentor the heroes — Jake and Marco might occasionally parallel Visser Three and Visser One, but they don’t learn from the vissers the way that Robin does from Slade or Raven does from Trigon.  The kids just... find their own way.  So while people have written fic where Elfangor or Eva or Mertil or Tom mentors the team, there’s not this in-your-face missed opportunity for the kids to get the parenting they deserve in Animorphs the way there is with Harry Potter and Avatar.

Have you noticed the thing?

Personally, I love this trend.  I’m not much of a shipper — I’m not fond of “will they or won’t they” romantic premises, and actively dislike “they will because they’re soulmates” premises.  My favorite Ship Dynamics are all platonic.  Like, my faves include (but are not limited to):

Grubby Semi-Feral Mentee and Aloof Socially-Incompetent Mentor Bond with Alarming Speed Over Niche Magical Interest (see: Briar and Rosethorn in Circle of Magic, Boy 412 and Marcia in Septimus Heap, Jason and Bruce in Batman, Wart and Merlin in The Once and Future King)

Well-Intentioned Loving Parent Irretrievably Fucks Up Child, Copes with Fallout (see: John and Dean in Supernatural, Adam and Cal in East of Eden, Soichiro and Light in Death Note, Elaine and T.J. in Political Animals)

I’ve Only Known This Person With Extremely Specific Shared Trauma for 10 Minutes But If Anything Happened to Them I Would Kill Everyone (see: Toph and Zuko in AtLA, Luke and Annabeth in Demigod Diaries, Ax and Tobias in Animorphs, Spike and Angel in Angel, Parker and Eliot in Leverage, Johanna and Finnick in Catching Fire)

Saving the World Sucks But At Least My Ultra-Competent Siblings Are Suffering With Me (see: Edmund and Lucy in Chronicles of Narnia, Sam and Dean in Supernatural, the Hargreeveses in Umbrella Academy, the Crains in Haunting of Hill House)

S3 is a make or break season for whatever RNM fans exist after S2 (myself included), so hopefully they have indeed learned to "read the room" and keep Maria away from Malex. It's been pointed out before that there are plenty of ways to keep Maria away from both Alex and Michael in S3 (especially since Alex didn't share more than a single scene with most of the main cast for all of S2) so let's hope Chris takes advantage of them.

100%. I think for a lot of us, especially the last of the LGBTQ+ stragglers who stuck around, season 3 is definitely the make or break season. It's not only easy for the writers to clean this up (I just don't know how they want to do it) but it's truly necessary in order to stop insulting the gay/queer community with the homophobic storytelling of this show. Maria has GOT to be removed from the Malex storyline, it's a no brainer. Have her finally share scenes with Rosa or have her spend time with her great-aunt Isobel (jfc Carina...), she does not have to be seen with Malex at all. Her presence has done enough long-term harm to this couple as it is.

Like you said nonnie, Alex needs to finally share screen time with Rosa, Max and Isobel. Characters he STILL doesn't get scenes with. Even Liz, THE MAIN CHARACTER, barely talks to him. Bring Alex/Kyle scenes back! There's so much Alex can bring to the table to the core group and instead they had him play relationship mediator to Miluca all of season 2, which is deeply f*cked up. Most of all I just want Malex to have scenes together, both alone and WITH the core group with the group actually acknowledging that Malex exists. No more homophobic storylines, respect the gay love story in the room people!

luke and leia really went all that fucking time NOT telling rey about her parentage??? when they knew how important it was to her?? how desperate she was for information about her parents?? after everything THEY went through about birth family drama?? they really thought that was a good idea?? rey is more than her family name, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t deserve to know. and HOW did they know she was palpatine’s granddaughter. like kyle, he’s a snoke acolyte, okay, so maybe at some point he’s taken into their confidence. but how the fuck do luke and leia find out

everything with leia was just. so bad. all of her scenes were so stilted, they would have been better off just cgi’ing her. and this movie isn’t technically their fault, but the fact that they’d already spent two movies completely wasting her. having her send her non-force sensitive husband to confront their murderous son, standing back and sending rey to her twin, literally never once doing anything but standing around and reacting to people around her. if leia trained as a jedi, we should have SEEN THAT. i did not wait my entire life to see jedi leia on screen and then never get it. and her death, completely unexplained except that for some reason reaching her son kills her.......... it’s fucking padme all over again. god, they just completely fucked everyone in the ot, so badly, but holy fuck does star wars hate women

still just generally really pissed off that they brought palpatine back at all. not just in the sense that they tried to fucking woobify kyle ron and stopped him from being the ultimate villain that they should have, but that disney continually shits on star wars’ legacy. anakin DESTROYED THE SITH. there was a whole prophecy. it took him 20 years, but he fucking did it. he killed palpatine. and now, like everything else disney has set up over the last few years, it means nothing, because he DIDN’T actually kill palpatine, just like everything luke and han and leia fought for is meaningless, because 30 years later everyone was still in the exact same place. a low-rent resistance without a lot of support, the jedi order slaughtered through treachery, fighting an overly powerful empire bent on slavery and destruction (also why i could never get into rebels. luke is a new hope, the presence of a jedi for the first time in 20 years is supposed to be a big fucking deal. hard to have that same shock and awe when kannan and ezra are formally joining the rebellion, meeting mon and leia and lando, prominently waving around lightsabers. if disney wanted to make stories about jedi choose literally ANY OTHER TIME PERIOD IN STAR WARS HISTORY. I AM SO DESPERATE FOR STORIES ABOUT JEDI. just in the right time, and not in this singular 50 year period where there shouldn’t be jedi, jfc)

the OTHER major problem in bringing palpatine back is yet again, they’re trying to top the “no, i am your father” moment, which is just never going to happen. that was a once in a lifetime moment. everything disney does is trying to bigger and better. it’s not just death stars that can destroy planets, it’s a million star destroyers! kyle ron and rey have a force bond unseen in generations that lets them trade items across the galaxy! force healing has always been a thing but now they can instantly heal death! star wars doesn’t have to be X-TREME to be good. its best moments have always been about its character beats. luke saying he won’t destroy his father, leia and han’s i love yous, anakin’s despair over leaving his mother behind to become a jedi. it doesn’t always have to be BIGGER and BETTER. E V E R Y T H I N G about tfa said that rey was a skywalker, that luke was her dad. the music, her dreams of an island, calling his lightsaber to her, their lonely upbringings on desert planets, their instant embroilment into a conflict much bigger than they are but that they quickly become central to. but because rian johnson is so up his own ass and so insistent on proving how clever he is, he couldn’t follow through on that. even though star wars has always been a fairy tale, and it’s never been about tricking audiences or proving them wrong or throwing out foreshadowing as a red herring. lucas is maybe the most straightforward filmmaker of all time. that’s why bad guys have names like sidious and maul and plagueis. subtle, he is not. and it’s one of my favorite things about star wars. and disney just doesn’t care

the fact that they gave us so many luke/rey parallels and STILL STUCK WITH SHITTY REY PALPATINE. rey flying in his x-wing wearing his helmet, rey leaping away to safety on the millennium falcon from an evil skywalker offering his hand asking them to join the dark side, rey’s fear of the darkness within herself.................. all of it meaningless, apparently

i am so eternally angry at the way they treated rey. removing her teeth, linking her story so inextricably with the man who tortured her, irrevocably tying her narrative to that of a man’s because apparently star wars just can’t handle a trilogy without a white man in a central role. the rey in tfa is a completely different character than the rey from tlj and tros. she couldn’t stand on her own merits? they respected her so little they had to force her to share her trilogy with a murderer who abused her, and try to call that love? to make her journey about a forced bond with him, when he only ever tried to murder her and bring about her downfall? that they would VALIDATE his gross treatment of her by having her kiss him........................... how they made a trilogy more sexist than 70s george lucas, i will never understand

the main movies are the skywalker family saga. that’s what they told us. ending the last movie with two palpatines facing off............. if they already said fuck anakin and everything about his legacy finally ending the rule of the sith, they should have at least let his GRANDDAUGHTER be the one to ultimately fulfill the prophecy. i really cannot believe they fucked anakin and all the skywalkers in this way. the final living skywalker descendant killed all of his remaining family members and THAT’S what we’re going to have to live with from now on. everything anakin and luke and leia struggled and fought for, everything they overcame, all meaningless because one fucking sociopath is such an edgy piece of shit that he’d rather build a shrine to his grandpa’s burned helmet and get stuck in teen “I HATE MY FAMILY” bullshit because...... his life was unfair, somehow??? he just really loves murder??? tyranny is cool??? who knows! not us! jaina didn’t get erased from canon for this. the skywalkers deserved better and so did we.
