#I haven’t watch the 90s show but I want to— does Harry exist in that one bc I know they took out Gwen

*scratching at the walls thinking about how no one has adapted Peter’s college arcs in a consistent and satisfying way.*
#coffee bean gang#spider-man#I was almost asleep but now I’m thinking about how there isn’t one piece of media out there that checks all the boxes#of adapting Peter in college + the coffee bean gang + doesn’t downsize the group or combine characters#+ does everyone in a decent way even if it’s not strictly comic accurate#raimi trilogy is one of the only ones that heads pretty quickly into the college era and also involves more than just gwen or mj#and as much as I like the films it does not handle the three of them in a way that scratches the itch for me#I mean for one it’s only Peter Harry and MJ. I like those three arguably the most but man the dynamic isn’t the same#especially bc Tobey’s Peter is much more serious and quiet/awkward with negative charisma (affectionately but still.)#MJ is mixed w Gwen’s personality which was disappointing to me bc I like MJ’s weird and super vibrant personality#and Harry loses some of the ‘kind of a sweet guy but very VERY fucked up’ and relies too heavily on Harry becoming the goblin for revenge#I sound super critical of the Raimi versions qhwjrjwkr I DO like them I do but it feels like completely alternate interps of the characters#most focus on spider-man’s origin which I totally get but also. Peter’s most interesting arcs happen in college#that’s why everyone has to adapt them into the high school years#(which they can do bc Peter was largely friendless during that time and was still fighting some truly d-tier guys#in between the forming of the famous spidey rogue gallery)#I mean I wouldn’t even complain if they chose to do the high school years and actually DID those instead of pasting the college arcs on it#I haven’t watch the 90s show but I want to— does Harry exist in that one bc I know they took out Gwen#at the risk of sounding like That kind of tssm fan. the closest we got to that dream was that show#bc they WERE gonna follow it into Peter’s college years and you could see them setting the gang up#it still fell into the ‘everyone is a childhood friend’ thing so the characters could all be there but it’s one of the most bearable ones

You probably have gone over it before but what are your opinions on Romione (Ron x Hermione)
I actually haven’t.
Well, probably not a surprise given the hints I’ve dropped, but I’m not a fan of this one either.
However, that said, ships are on a scale. Romione bores me but it’s not in the “this would never happen and fans are deluding themselves” area that some very popular ships end up in. I don’t argue with it being a possibility or that this is where canon ended up.
Now, that aside, what’s up with Ron/Hermione.
Well, it’s that quintessential 90′s romance. The pair bicker constantly, all they do is fight with one another, we later learn that they did this because they were secretly attracted to one another. Now they’re dating and they still bicker constantly.
It was a big trope for a while but I was rarely, if ever now that I think about it, sold on it.
It’s sort of “The Lady Doth Protest Too Much” except, No, the Lady really Doth Protest Too Much. All Hermione and Ron do is bicker and fight, they don’t even really seem to like each other at the end of the day, and I can’t see them ever really being happy together in the long term.
So, why can I see it happening? Well.
Why Does Hermione Go For Ron?
I’ve gone over this before, but part of it I think is that Harry’s off the table and Hermione has accepted that very early. Harry never shows any interest in Hermione as anything other than a friend and Hermione knows it.
Now, Ron never does either, at least for a while, but I think Ron is a safer option in a lot of ways. He’s a part of the golden trio but he’s not its heart, he’s important to the three of them, but Harry is the heart and soul of the group. If Hermione ruins things with Harry, then everything falls apart. If things don’t work out with Ron, well, the three of them have spats every now and then and Ron will probably come back if it goes wrong.
Basically, I think Hermione gravitates towards Ron because by being with Ron the golden trio remains as it is. They’re still Hermione, Harry, and Ron. If Hermione brings in an outsider, the entire dynamic gets thrown off, suddenly there’s a fourth there or Hermione has to split her time between Ron and Harry and New Guy.
Ultimately, I think Hermione values her friendship with Harry and Ron (the only friendships she’s ever had in her life) more than she does dating someone like, oh, Viktor Krum.
Hermione also seems to like dating guys she feels safely smarter than. Hermione places all her value in her intelligence, and frankly, when it comes to Harry and Ron she’s kind of right to. They clearly value her as a friend mostly because she’s the nerd research homework friend. They make it very clear that she’s really only tolerated at best and constantly walking on thin ice.
Everything in Hermione’s life confirms that, if she doesn’t have her intelligence and hard work to offer up, then she’ll be dropped like it’s hot. So, per the end of canon, and I think probably for the rest of her life given she marries Ron, Hermione will never pursue someone who threatens these qualities. Because if she introduces someone in her life who’s at least as smart as her (if not god forbid smarter), then what’s the point of Hermione Granger?
Ron’s dumber and far lazier than Hermione. Oh, Ron’s not necessarily as stupid as Harry (who is dumb as bricks), but he is fundamentally lazier and thanks to his worse grades will be a nice, safe, choice for Hermione who can be assured that Ron will always need her.
He might resent her for it now and then, but he does need her.
Why Does Ron Go For Hermione?
Surprisingly, I think Ron gets together with Hermione for similar reasons. For a very long time he shows -1 interest in Hermione. She’s the ugly girl friend who’s pretty much one of the dudes.
This changes when others start going after Hermione.
With Victor at the Yule Ball, suddenly, the golden trio is threatened. Hermione can clean up into an attractive young woman, people outside their tight knit friend circle can be interested, and suddenly Hermione can leave if she wants to.
For the longest time it was a long accepted truth that for better or worse Hermione was stuck with them. So Ron could rag on her, get pissed about the Firebolt fiasco, pretty much anything and Hermione would eventually be back because she has nowhere else to go.
I think the Yule Ball was the first wake-up call that this isn’t true. Hermione can leave, she just has to find the courage to do so.
Well, Ron brushes that off after Hermione’s relationship with Viktor pretty much goes nowhere. And then we get sixth year, Ron has a girlfriend (which is nice until she starts expecting things of him), but worse McLaggen starts showing interest in Hermione.
Essentially, I think Ron dates Hermione and convinces himself he’s attracted to her so that no one else can date Hermione.
He reasons that they fight all the time because they actually like each other. And if they date, nothing actually changes. (And as he becomes increasingly paranoid that Harry himself is into Hermione it all just starts sort of spiraling out of control.)
Basically, I think Ron and Hermione end up together to ensure that everything remains as it was. And it does, because Harry’s relationship with Ginny is practically non-existent (it’s very telling that Ginny does not join them on the horcrux hunt and is essentially left to be murdered or taken hostage by Voldemort).
So What Now?
The future for Hermione and Ron is, not necessarily bleak, but it’s not particularly good and ultimately quite dull.
They still fight constantly, Rose and Hugo watch their mother and father have daily screaming matches with each other over nothing. They assume this is normal and just what parents do.
Hermione’s the overbearing and very accomplished wife and bread winner that Ron secretly resents. They both know he resents her for it, neither says this out loud.
Ron’s laziness caught up with him and he just works in George’s very successful store. Ron doesn’t even really like pranks, George does most of the work, but Ron is too myopic to actually leave and do anything else. Just like all his life, he’s overshadowed by his older brothers, his wife, and his best friend. He is a pit of bitterness that he tries not to let show. His wife certainly knows.
They’re an extremely dysfunctional, bitter, couple who stays together thanks to inertia, expectations, nostalgia, and the desperate desire to keep things the same. Harry obliviously doesn’t notice and whenever the three get together (sans Ginny as she’s not invited) he notes how great it is that their amazing friendship has survived all these years.
They have shitty sex once a week. It’s probably circled on Hermione’s calendar in their bedroom, “Sunday, 9:00pm, Sex with Ron”.
Rinse and repeat for the rest of their lives.
Really Though, I Just Have 0 Interest in the Ship
I can’t tell you why it does but it bores me to tears. It just does. Every single aspect of it. Even the dysfunction is boring.
To quote a friend:
If ships had literal boat counterparts, this would be the dullest kind of ship, it would be a wooden motor boat with no exciting speeds, it just put-put-puts out to fish and then returns to port.

Some Quotes
I re read the Harry Potter books and here are some quotes I felt I wanted to remember
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone
There are some things you can’t share without ending up liking each other, and knocking out a twelve-foot mountain troll is one of them. Page 192
‘And you’re not sitting with the Prefects today, either,’ said George. ‘Christmas is a time for family.’ Page 218
(Dumbledore) It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live, remember that. Page 230
(Neville) ‘I’m worth twelve of you, Malfoy,’ he stammered. Page 240
(Hermione) ‘Flitwick told me in secret that I got a hundred and twelve percent on his exam. They’re not throwing me out after that.’ Page 291
(Hermione) ‘Books! And cleverness! There are more important things - friendship and bravery.’ Page 308
(Dumbledore) ‘It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends.’ Page 329
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
In the end, he chose the same new subjects as Ron, feeling that if he was rubbish at them, at least he’d have someone friendly to help him. Page 267
‘Because that’s what Hermione does,’ says Ron, shrugging. ‘When in doubt, go to the library.’ Page 269
(Dumbledore) It is out choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, for more than our abilities. Page 352
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
(Hermione) ‘Poor Crookshanks, that witch said he’d been in there for ages: no one wanted him.’ Page 64
‘We - shall I make a cup of tea?’ said Ron. Harry stared at him.   ‘It’s what my mum does whenever someone’s upset,’ Ron muttered, shrugging. Page 232
Even without Divination, she was taking more subjects than anybody else. Page 319
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Yes, that would be Hermione’s advice: go straight to the Headmaster of Hogwarts, and in the meantime, consult the book. Page 18
Hermione, who had turned rather pink again, seemed to be trying not to look too pleased with herself. Page 196
But Harry didn’t care, he wouldn’t have cared if Karkaroff had given him a zero; Ron’s indignation on his behalf was worth about a hundred points to him. He didn’t tell Ron this, of course, but his heart felt lighter than air as he turned to leave the enclosure. Page 304
He was not going to die kneeling at Voldemort’s feet...he was going to die upright like his father, and he was going to die trying to defend himself, even if no defence was possible... Page 558
(Dumbledore) ‘Remember, if the time should come when you have to make a choice between what is right, and what is easy, remember what happened to a boy who was good, and kind, and brave, because he strayed across the path of Lord Voldemort. Remember Cedric Diggory.’ Page 608
As Hagrid had said, what would come, would come...and he would have to meet it when it did. Page 617
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
‘Bill doesn’t like him either, said Ginny, as though that settled the matter. Page 64
‘Yeah, size is no guarantee of power,’ said George. ‘Look at Ginny.’ Page 92
‘The witch spoke in a fluttery, girlish, high-pitched voice that took harry aback; he had been expecting a croak. Page 135
‘Well, congratulations,’ said Moody, still glaring at Ron with his normal eye, ‘authority figures always attract trouble, but I suppose Dumbledore thinks you can withstand most major jinxes or he wouldn’t have appointed you...’ Page 156
Harry’s mood suddenly lifted. His father had not been a prefect either. Page 157
Seeing Hagrid again was one of the things he’d been looking forward to most. Page 181
Harry could not remember Hermione ever neglecting to read when instructed to, or indeed resisting the temptation to open any book that came under her nose. Page 223
Hermione drew herself up to her full height; her eyes were narrowed and her bushy hair seemed to crackle with electricity. Page 236
‘Wow, I wonder what it’d be like to have a difficult life?’ said Harry sarcastically. Page 242
Who cared about a stupid flying horse; Cho thought he had been really brave. For a moment, he considered accidentally-on-purpose showing her his cut hand as he helped her tie her parcel on to the owl... Page 263
She (Hermione) looked up at Ron and her frostiness seemed to melt. Page 272
(Luna) ‘Just because you’re so narrow-minded you need to have everything shoved under your nose before you-’ Page 319
‘Haven’t e got a counter-jinx or this?’ Fudge asked Umbridge impatiently, gesturing at Marietta’s face. ‘So she can speak freely?’  ‘I have not yet managed to find one,’ Umbridge admitted grudgingly, and Harry felt a surge of pride in Hermione’s jinxing ability. Page 566
‘Well usually when a person shakes their head,’ said McGonagall coldly, ‘ they mean “no”. So unless Miss Edgecombe is using a form of sign-language as yet unknown to humans -’ Page 569
Harry struggled around to see who was half strangling him and saw Professor McGonagall crouched beside him; she had forced both him and Marietta out of harms way. Page 573
(Dumbledore) ‘On the contrary...the fact that you can feel pain like this is your greatest strength.’ Page 758
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
(Snape) ‘You think he is mistaken? Or that I have somehow hoodwinked him? Fooled the Dark Lord, the greatest wizard, the most accomplished Legilimens the world has ever seen?’ Page 23
‘I enjoyed the meetings, too,’ said Luna serenely. ‘It was like having friends.’ Page 115
...and watched Pansy stroke the sleek blond hair off Malfoy’s forehead, smirking as she did so, as though anyone would have loved to have been in her place. Page 125
It was a mark of the strength of their friendship that Ron did not laugh. Page 141
‘Humph,’ snorted Professor McGonagall. ‘It’s high time your (Neville’s) grandmother learned to be proud of the grandson she’s got, rather than the one she thinks she ought to have - particularly after what happened at the Ministry.’ Page 145
He did not usually lie in bed reading his textbooks; that sort of behaviour, as Ron rightly said, was indecent in anybody except Hermione, who was simply weird that way. Page 198
On the other hand, the Prince had proved a much more effective teacher than Snape so far. Page 199
‘I like really good Quidditch players,’ Hermione corrected her, still smiling. Page 260
She (Hermione) looked too fierce to argue with at that moment, so Harry dropped the subject of Ron and recounted all that he had overheard between Malfoy and Snape. Page 294
(Slughorn) ‘Had a house-elf taste every bottle after what happened to your poor friend Rupert.’ Page 403
It was important, Dumbledore said, to fight, and fight again, and keep fighting, for only then could evil be kept at bay, though never quite eradicated. Page 536
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
(Yaxley) ‘He always did himself well, Lucius. Peacocks...’ Page 2
‘This isn’t your average book,’ said Ron. ‘It’s pure gold: Twelve Fail-Safe Ways to Charm Witches... You’d be surprised, it’s not all about wandwork, either.’ Page 90
Kreacher’s thin arms trembled with the weight of the pan, still held aloft. ‘Perhaps just one more, Master Harry, for luck?’ Page 178
The empty words could not disguise the fact that his parents’ mouldering remains lay beneath snow and stone, indifferent and unknowing. Page 267
(Hermione) ‘Imagine losing fingernails, Harry! That really puts our sufferings into perspective, doesn’t it?’ Page 312
(Hermione) I mean, you could claim that anything’s real if the only basis for believing in it is that nobody’s proved it doesn’t exist!’ Page 335
The three of them spoke at the same time; Hermione said, ‘the Clock,’ Ron said, ‘the wand,’ and Harry said, ‘the stone.’ Page 337
Luna had decorated her bedroom ceiling with five beautiful painted faces: Harry, Ron, Hermione, Ginny and Neville. They were not moving as the portraits of Hogwarts moved, but there was a certain magic about them all the same: Harry thought they breathed. What appeared to be fine golden chains wove around the pictures, linking them together, but after examining them for a minute or so, Harry realised that the chains were actually one word, repeated a thousand times in golden ink: friends ... friends ... friends ... Page 340
(Neville) ‘The thing is, it helps when people stand up to them, it gives everyone hope. I used to notice that when you did it, Harry.’ Page 467
His eyes feasted on her (Lily), and he thought that he would like to stand and look at her forever, and that would be enough. Page 571

Old School X is a project interviewing X-Files fanfic authors who were posting fic during the original run of the show. New interviews are posted every Tuesday.
Interview with Piper Sargasso
Piper Sargasso has 25 stories at Gossamer, but don’t miss her website where the fics each have cover collage art. If you are a fan of Mulder/Scully romance, there are a lot of MSR fics to read that are set in different seasons of the show. But like the show that never stuck to one type of story, Piper’s stories have variety, so you can also find AUs and /Other.  Big thanks to Piper for doing this interview.
Does it surprise you that people are still interested in reading your X-Files fanfics and others that were posted during the original run of the show (1993-2002)?
It does, but I love that people are still into it! Writers back in the day put so much work and love into their writing, and it's nice to know that the stories are still being appreciated to this day. As for my own stories, it puts a huge smile on my face to know there are still people out there checking them out and hopefully enjoying them.
What do you think of when you think about your X-Files fandom experience? What did you take away from it?
It was such a positive period of my life. I made some amazing friends who became something like older sisters (and some brothers) to me, even though I was a little ridiculous when I was in my early to mid-twenties. It was also a much-needed confidence booster. I was a pretty shy person and loved writing, but never had the nerve to show anything to anyone. My first fanfic was completely horrible, but because of it I made my first XF friend and super beta, Mimic117. Between her guidance and the encouraging words from my Yahoo group I was able to do something I really loved and felt great about myself and my abilities for the first time. That will stay with me forever. That first story was truly atrocious, but it was a catalyst for great things in my life when I needed them the most.
Social media didn't really exist during the show's original run. How were you most involved with the X-Files online (atxc, message board, email mailing list, etc.)?
I remember trying this cool new thing called an AOL chat room, but they were more interested in perving on each other than talking about the show. Once I knew about fanfiction I kept seeing that some of my favorite authors kept mentioning IWTBXF in their notes, a Yahoo group named I Want to Believe. I looked it up, joined, and with great trepidation made my introductory post. Everyone was so warm and welcoming, and talking to my favorite authors in the group was a little like meeting a celebrity and finding out that they're awesome in real life. After IWTBXF fell apart, an off-shoot called Beyond the Sea was created with almost all of the original group transferring over. I stuck to my little family there and didn't branch out into much else, other than the rare dip into Haven. Ephemeral and Gossamer, of course.
What did you take away from your experience with X-Files fic or with the fandom in general?
Mostly the overwhelming feeling of acceptance and confidence to write, something I was sorely lacking before in my life. I fell in with the best group, that's for sure! They made me feel like being a professional writer could be an achievable goal.
What was it that got you hooked on the X-Files as a show?
The commercial advertising. The pilot spoke to my supernatural-loving, angsty 15 year-old soul. I watched it religiously every week. There was nothing like it. It was off-beat, but serious (most of the time) and fulfilled my insatiable craving for the paranormal and weird. You just couldn't get that from Melrose Place and Beavis and Butthead, you know? It definitely helped that David Duchovny was adorable and the character of Scully was the strong and intelligent icon we needed in the 90's and beyond.
What got you involved with X-Files fanfic?
In high school I had a friend who was as obsessed with the show as I was. Maybe more, since she once had a slumber party that was exclusively to binge watch her taped episodes (the other girls who wanted to mess around with spells and the Ouija board weren't thrilled that she couldn't be swayed away from it) and she often drove me from play rehearsals in her convertible with the top down and the theme song blasting to the heavens, much to my delight and mortification. A couple years after we graduated she told me about the piece of fanfic she wrote. Insert a record screech here. What?! You mean there are thousands of stories dedicated to my favorite show? And hundreds more get added every month?! I was obsessed. If I could've stopped working and slept at my computer desk I would have.
What is your relationship like now to X-Files fandom?
Sadly it's nonexistent these days. I have great memories and it holds a big piece of my heart, but I haven't been active in a long time. I would love to see a huge revival, and would definitely want to be involved in that in some way, were it to happen.
Were you involved with any fandoms after the X-Files? If so, what was it like compared to X-Files?
I read a lot of Harry Potter fanfiction for a while, but I never could expend the kind of energy and time I did for the X-Files fandom. It came at a perfect time in my life, and so far nothing else has measured up to it.
Who are some of your favorite fictional characters? Why?
Besides XF characters? Off the top of my head I really love Hermione Granger, Buffy Summers, Elizabeth Bennet, and Claire Fraser for their sass and strength of character, Severus Snape for his complexity, and Christina Ricci's version of Wednesday Addams for her pure awesomeness. She's pretty much my spirit animal.
Do you ever still watch The X-Files or think about Mulder and Scully?
I do occasionally. I watched the series from season 1-7 so many times that I started to burn out, but I get on my X-Files kicks sometimes and binge it again.
Do you ever still read X-Files fic? Fic in another fandom?
Like with the show, I'll get nostalgic and need to consume all the fanfics my greedy little eyes can behold until I move on to something else. It can feel a little lonely though, if you'll excuse the drama. We're not in the heyday anymore, so it feels a little like walking through a ghost town. Many of the stories out there are suspended in time because the show ended, or people stopped writing.
Do you have any favorite X-Files fanfic stories or authors?
I know I have dozens, but I'm drawing a blank. My ultimate favorite is any well-written MSR casefile with UST finally resulting in RST. Those are my unicorns!
What is your favorite of your own fics, X-Files and/or otherwise?
I have a silly one called Baby, It's Cold Outside that I sometimes read around Christmastime. It was a fluffy song-fic, but I can see the scene so clearly in my mind when I read it and it's just pure fun. I also like my Donnie Pfaster series. I can see the potential in my writing with those, which makes me feel I could really write something special someday. Plus, he's such an interesting little slimeball to write and read about. Bless his heart.
Do you think you'll ever write another X-Files story? Or dust off and post an oldie that for whatever reason never made it online?
I still think about the two WIPs I haven't finished. I wrote myself into a corner with This Mortal Coil, and honestly I think it needs a total overhaul. I think Dana Scully's Diary would be a fun one to finish. I hate that I never finished them.
Do you still write fic now? Or other creative work?
I think about writing fanfic now and then and I've had a couple original novels sketched out, but there are so many other demands on my time that I haven't gotten very far. I still plan to see the novels through, even if no one but interested friends and family read them.
Where do you get ideas for stories?
I used to watch an episode and really study the actors' expressions and actions, always trying to find new angles to the stories we all know. A lot of times things would just come to me and I'd get so excited I couldn't sleep until I wrote a good chunk of it down.
What's the story behind your pen name?
The friend who introduced me to fanfic told me the best way to choose a pen name was to make sure it derives from the show. For a couple days I looked at the titles and summaries of episodes and agonized over just the right name. Finally Piper Maru and the summary from Triangle, which mentions the Sargasso sea, stood out and just clicked.
Do your friends and family know about your fic and, if so, what have been their reactions?
My now husband always knew, and he thought it was cool that I had a hobby that made me so happy, but he was never a reader. My parents found out when I was about 24 and my step-dad would tell EVERYONE about it, much to my horror. Most reactions were of the bland, "Oh yeah? That's nice." variety but I definitely got some weird looks from others. The worst was when I found out how much of my racier MSR stories my parents read. My step-dad thought it was hilarious and teased me a little. My usually open-minded mom was uncomfortable, but tried to be supportive. It's all fun and games until your daughter starts writing psuedo-erotica for anyone to see!
Is there a place online (tumblr, twitter, AO3, etc.) where people can find you and/or your stories now?
Circe Invidiosa very generously hosts a page for me at http://pipers.invidiosa.com.

When it comes to writers with multiple titles under their belt like Miles, I think we should take their older works into account as well when critiquing their current works. If compared to older works they've shown improvement in certain topics, then it's a good sign that they are learning from the mistakes/criticisms. But if their current work has gotten to the point where it's reading as malicious, then that needs to be brought up too. If they did better before they should be doing better now.
Yes, provided we can distill that improvement down to a concise and specific summary. Like if someone goes, “Ugh I don’t like John Green. Isn’t he the manic pixie dream girl author?” someone can go, “He was, but then he took that criticism and has improved a great deal. Obviously a lot of people still take issue with his work, but him being open about trying to do away with the trope and the strides he’s made in recent novels - even if they aren’t perfect - are important to recognize.” “Oh! Okay cool.”
Or the opposite: “I love Harry Potter! JKR really did a lot to give us a strong woman lead, a boy suffering through abuse, an allegory for AIDS...” “Yeah, those were aspects of HP that we were praising during the 90s and early 2000s. However, with time we raised our standards and now those things, or how those things were portrayed, don’t read as progressive anymore. More importantly, JRK has failed to progress with the rest of us and is now actively harming minority communities.” “....ah. Yeah. I can see how that would be a problem.”
When it comes to Miles’ work I don’t hear specifics. Which isn’t to say that they don’t exist, just that I haven’t come across them. Fans who have an attachment to his previous work often don’t want to hear criticism of RWBY at all, or likewise fans who aren’t into his earlier stuff/haven’t seen it assume it’s as bad as RWBY currently is. It’s all very broad conversations like, “But RvB is so good!” “Okay but... what does that have to do with RWBY?” or “Ugh RWBY has so many problems.” “Sure, but Camp Camp is great.” What exactly is good about this show vs. that show? What problems are we talking about? What’s supposedly working in one vs. another and why do you think that? It’s only when we point to something specific that we can start tracing how it has either a) improved over time or b) regressed with time. I still don’t believe that going, “But they did this great thing back in the day” is an excuse for why we shouldn’t be criticizing this other thing now, but you’re right that there’s a possibility that this bad thing is less bad than what was previously written. That there’s been growth within this author’s individual journey... but I’d need to actually watch all of this material with this type of criticism in mind to form an opinion either way. And for me, I don’t have time to do that. Having someone else claim, “Oh yeah. RvB struggled with ____ but now RWBY is doing it better” isn’t enough for me to base my own conclusions off of.

I keep seeing these posts going around about queer books, but my problem is that nowadays, I struggle to sit down with books and primarily consume them via audibooks. A lot of the recs are ones I haven’t found in audiobook format using my usual routes. For this reason, let me start a post that I hope y’all will add onto that has LGBTQ+ folks in them that I know exist in audiobook format. For reference, I’ve used for my audiobook consumption Audible, Libro, Overdrive, and Scribd, so each of these will have been found by myself in one of those places.
Nemesis Series by April Daniels trans wlw MC | Superhero | coming of age | YA The First book is Dreadnought followed by Sovereign and follows Danny, a trans girl whose body is transformed to the one that matches her vision of herself after a superhero falls and passes his powers on to her. All at once, she has to face the coming out this forces on her and new powers all at once. The books are intense and doesn’t pull its punches on the things Danny goes through, but her journey is beautiful and I love her so much.
Beauty Queens by Libba Bray  Various MCs | Drama | Humor | YA This is an ensemble cast and includes a wlw couple and a trans girl, all of whom are pretty damn cool. On their flight to their next competition, the plane these beauty queens are on crashes, and those who survive get stranded on a totally-supposedly-deserted island. This is a fun novel that had, to me, a very Hitchhiker’s Guide sort of humor to it. It was a really fun read, and the author narrates herself and is really fun.
Annie on my Mind by Nancy Garden wlw mc | contemporary | coming of age | YA The good kid becomes good friends with a girl she met outside of school, but she begins to realize she has more than just friendly feelings for the girl. Being in the 90s, she finds it’s not so easy to be the good kid and pursue this interest.
Her Royal Highness by Rachel Hawkins bi MC | Contemporary | Romance | Class Romance | YA MC leaves Texas, USA to finish her last year of high school in a prestigious Scottish school where she ends up being roommates with an actual princess with whom she doesn’t start the year out on good terms with.
Ash by Malinda Lo wlw MC | Fantasy | Coming of Age | YA Cinderella retelling where the fairies aren’t guaranteed to help and the prince just might not be who Cinderella wants after all. A very internal journey, quite enchanting. I really need to go back and revisit this soon.
Juliet Takes a Breath by Gabby Rivera Lesbian MC | Coming of Age | YA Juliet leaves home for the summer to spend in Oregon with a writer who inspired Juliet’s journey into feminism and helped her embrace her lesbianism. She learns along the way though that adults are not infallible, and that this writer has a large blind spot when it comes to Juliet’s culture and the intersection of race and feminism. All this after having come out to her family and dealing with the fallout of that far from home.
Carry On by Rainbow Rowell mlm MC | Fantasy | Romance | YA This story feels like a sort of ‘What if the Harry Potter books were more inclusive and also had some parody in its magical world’ story. But it jumps right to the last book and the good stuff. This felt like fanfiction in the best way (and is appropriate given that it was written after the book Fangirl wherein the MC is writing fanfiction of this universe kinda. It’s complicated but good!)
Kushiel Phedre Series by Jacqueline Carey bi MC | Fantasy | Epic Fantasy | Kink | Political Intrique A woman born with a flaw that set her on the path of being indentured as a child to a man who sees love and sex as another means to gather political intel. Down this road lies intrigue, betrayal, and love.
Nevernight Chronicles by Jay Kristoff bi MC | Fantasy | Revenge  Worth mentioning is that the author does not ID as any kind of LGBTQIA+ and in my opinion, that especially shows in the last installment of the series. I would suggest trigger warnings for the entire series if you have any as there is sex and violence. In a world with three suns and almost never night, a girl with a kinship for shadows seeks out the skills to kill those who destroyed her family.
Her Body and Other Parties by Maria Carmen Machado Various | Short Stories | Surreal | Contemporary   Don’t know how to summarize well given they are a series of short stories, but they are haunting and telling and beautiful, and even though I rarely do short stories, I absolutely fell in love with these.
The Night’s Watch by Sarah Waters Various | Ensemble Cast | Period Drama English WWII  Unfortunately, I read this in 2017 and it follows the stories of four different characters, two of whom are lesbians. I don’t remember their archs well enough to provide a proper summary. This story tends to be a more internal character study of each of the characters and what it might have been like living at the time they did. It was really good though if you like that sort of thing!
Tipping the Velvet by Sarah Waters Lesbian MC | Period Drama | Romance | Coming of Age Taking place in the Victorian era, Nan leaves her coastal, oyster fishing home after becoming infatuated with Kitty, performer who sings dressed as a man. She discovers herself in the big city as she works as Kitty’s attendant, but nothing ever stays the same, and when she finds her and Kitty’s desires on how to handle their feelings differ errevocably, Nan is suddenly left adrift.
The above are all focused in one way or another on the LGBTQ+ character in a prominent way where the character’s queerness is made explicit in the text. Below is going to be the audiobooks I’ve read/listened to where I have felt there is strong evidence that a character is portrayed as LGBT+. Some will have been made canon by the author after the fact, others have been widely regarded as portrayed that way, and a couple are just how I interpreted them.
Trouble with Kings by Sherwood Smith Fantasy | Romance | Slow Burn | YA A princess of fortune who has been courted for her wealth all her life, Flian is quite done with dalliance. But that doesn’t mean others are done with her. Caught in the middle of a political intrigue between two... maybe three... possibly four??? rivaling kingdoms, she finds her wealth pursued in less than ethical manners and ends up a player herself on the field of political import. Is it even possible in the chaos of all this to find love along the way? Flian herself repeatedly shows no interest in romance and while able to remark upon attraction, never seems to have any herself until she realizes she has fallen for someone, someone she realizes a bit late she’s had a coming together of the minds for. For this reason, my personal interpretation of this character is demi-sexual.
The Protector of the Small Series by Tamora Pierce Fantasy | Coming of Age | YA  Keladry of Mindelan wants to become the second lady knight in history. The trainer at the castle doesn’t believe girls are cut out for it, and the boys don’t seem the most ready for a lady knight in training either. But Kel is determined to make her place in the world. Throughout the course of the series, while she engages in some light dalliances, she finds herself disinterested in relationships and has been confirmed by the author since the series was published to be asexual.
The Deed of Paksenarrion by Elizabeth Moon Fantasy | D&D-esque | Epic Fantasy | Coming of Age  Paksennarrion, a sheep farmer’s daughter, rebels against her father upon hearing of the engagement he made for her and runs away to a local contract militia company to start her career as a warrior. Strength and strategy aren’t the only things she’ll need on this life’s path, but also a faith she didn’t know she was capable of. I don’t know that the author has ever said anything on the matter, but in most circles you will find that Paks is generally regarded as aro/ace and is pretty explicitly stated several times throughout the series that she simply has never had the compulsion.
A Beautiful Poison by Lydia Kang Period Drama/Mystery (early 1900s) | Coming of Age | Mystery Three people on the cusp of adulthood, with a complicated history of friendship from different stations in life, come together to try to unravel the mystery of strange deaths happening around them while trying to navigate what shapes the rest of their lives will take. Of the two man lady characters, one repeatedly struck me as bisexual, and the other as asexual. This is one where I’m brining my own lens to the story, and I don’t know that the author did this with intent.
There’s a fair chance that I am forgetting some audiobooks and haven’t included all I’ve read. I would also say that anything not marked with a YA may have want of some trigger warnings. If someone wants to know, just let me know which warnings you have need of and I’ll try to do my best to remember if that content is included in the book. I of course cannot remember everything and don’t know everyone’s limits, but I can try. But for certain the non young adult stories have content that can be heavy or dark or twisted.

Crisis On Infinite Earths: The Flash and The Flame Version
All of this is going to be under the cut because, not only is this long and I don’t want to clog everyone’s feeds, but because it does have a lot of spoilers for the future of the Flash and The Flame series as well as Crisis On Inifinite Earths, if you haven’t read that far or watched that far in the show.  I’m tagging the usual suspects, but don’t feel you have to read if you don’t want to be spoiled on things.

Crisis Part 1: This is more of a Supergirl-centered thing so Flash stuff wouldn't be as important, but here we go. Key points to note is that my ideas may and probably will change by the time I actually get to writing this part. But! Barry, Cadence, and Brady are brought to Earth-38 by Harbringer and everyone is caught up on what's going on with Crisis. . Oliver finds out about the newspaper changing and goes to meet with the Monitor...surprised to find that Cadence has made a deal with the Monitor as well. The teams go out to protect the tower from the shadow demons...where Brady finds out that he is getting hurt each time a shadow demon is destroyed as his power is linked to their presence. But he continues to fight anyway. Throughout this battle, when the Monitor starts taking the heroes away, Brady finds out that Cadence made a deal with the Monitor and stays with Oliver and Cadence to fight off the rest of the shadow demons...which ultimately results in him dying alongside Oliver. (I feel there should be a bit here with Kara and Deity being upset with Barry, Cadence. and  Brady for not mentioning Crisis to them, especially as they just watched their family die. Though this is also tough for them as Brady's birthday is December 8th, when Crisis starts, and Cade's is December 15th, so they're both kinda whacked with the angst plank in terms of Barry not being there. Also, while (I think, I'm still working it out) Brady would have a girlfriend here, he'd still have (and forever would, probably) some feelings for Deity and tries to impress her a bit now that he's 14 here. Crisis Part 2: Cadence manages to survive the shadow demon attack because of her healing abilities but it's VERY touch and go for her. Her healing is painful because her body is basically being continuously ripped apart and put back together. But when she pulls through and finds out Oliver is dead and, more importantly, that Brady is dead, she turns near catatonic as, in her words, she "lost the only thing worth living for". She greatly hates herself for it because, she feels, if it weren't for her, Brady never would've become a hero and died.  She contacts Ryder to tell him what happened, growing even worse when he breaks down as well, and concocts the plot of using the Book of Destiny to bring him back. The Monitor tells them all of the Paragons (and this is where things get a tiny bit tricky as the Smallville Superman in my series exists on Earth-1 and is the Clark Kent I use for Superman and HASN'T given up his powers, but that can be worked around). Devastated at Oliver's and Brady's deaths, Barry resolves to bring the back via the Lazarus pit. But Constantine tells Barry that Brady can't be revived during it as his soul is "missing to the darkness" (I will explain this later), which gives Barry a glimmer of hope that Brady isn't actually dead. Though they still try to resurrect Oliver, finding that they'd still need to bring his soul back to his body. Crisis Part 3: The Paragon detector determines the rest of the paragons, with Cadence scoffing at the paragon she's named as. She refuses to go with Barry and the rest of Team Flash to find the anti-matter canon, already making up her mind to use the Book of Destiny to bring Brady back as well as Earth-2 (finding out that Harry, Jesse, her Earth-2 parents, and Earth-2 Barry are dead) and teams up with Kara to bring back Earth-38 and Argos though people continuously try to talk them out of it. This part plays out the same as  Earth-90 Barry is on the treadmill and they try to save him (don't think I'd keep Black Lightning in unless he's really big in the last parts because I don't watch the show and so far don't really see what he brings to it, idk). But, when Earth-90 Barry tries to take away his speed, he and Barry run around the room so fast that no one can see them and for a while Team Flash doesn't know which Barry died and went through the breach. Due to this, as far as Cadence knows, everyone she loves is dead. But Barry survives as he had taken on Earth-90s Barry speed and was, basically, moving as fast as two speedsters and had to take a while to slow down. Finally, the Anti-Monitor destroys Earth-1 with the anti-matter wave, taking out the rest of Cade's family and friends, before taking down the Waverider and the paragons being sent and split up through the Vanishing Point. Now, because I have to see how the last two parts of Crisis play out, I thought of having Cade taken out by the anti-matter wave, but also thought of having her in the Vanishing Point but separated from with the others (not just her, everyone is separated, it would be used as a point to have them go through a 'trial' of sorts to determine why they were chosen as paragons), not knowing who survived.

Have you ever questioned your religious views? As early as I was 10. I abandoned it shortly after. Do you have a job? Nope, but maybe I will by six months o_o Do you find it difficult to tell others what you want for Christmas? Yeah, mostly because I’m at that point where I don’t really ask for anything anymore. You could get me anything from a mug to homemade cookies to an extension cord to a blender and I’d be all over it. How was your birthday this year? It was mostly sad. I was miserable. Angela saved the day from being a disaster by taking me out to dinner and playing with me at Timezone. I told Gab mooooonths before to ask her parents if she could spend my birthday with me (because it would be falling on a Sunday), but they didn’t allow her and told me to celebrate on a different day, because it was Easter Sunday. I was pretty crestfallen after that and didn’t even want to celebrate at all anymore. If you are in college, what is your major? Unfortunately, journalism. Fortunately, I’m getting my degree in six months.
If you are not in college, what is your intended major? I’m in college, but I’ll spin this question around and say that if I had the chance to rewind it again, I would pick among history, psychology, or political science. What is your life philosophy? I don’t have one. My viewpoints change everyday. Are you a member of any family organizations? Nope. Have you ever been under the influence? No, but I haven’t done anything that you’re not allowed to do while drunk, like driving. Do you watch Tosh.O? I never did but I was familiar with the show back when it was a bit popular at the start of the 2010s. Would you like to have a pet horse? That would be nice, but no; I wouldn’t know how to properly care for it. Have you read the entire Harry Potter series? No, I only read until the thick blue book, at which point I quit because the first four? five? books sounded the same and I didn’t want to go through another similar conflict again. Have you seen the Deathy Hallows? No. How long does it take you to commute to school, work, etc? Depends, Philippine traffic can be very taxing. The drive at its kindest would take me 20-25 minutes; but usually, it would take me anywhere between 50-90 minutes. Do you live to to the north or the south of the equator? APPARENTLY, we live in the northern hemisphere. For 21 years I thought we lived under the equator. Damn. You learn something new everyday. Can you play the piano? No. I can play one tune but only with one hand and only because I painstakingly remembered which keys to press – I can’t actually read notes or whatever they’re called. Can you read sheet music? ^^ When is the last time you swept a floor? Yesterday when my dog peed under the Christmas tree -___- Luckily he missed the wrapped presents hahaha. Do you like the science fiction saga Star Wars? No. Who is the worst author you can think of? I don’t read enough to determine who I think is a pretty bad author. Do you enjoy literature from the past or more recent times? Neither, I don’t really like lit. On average, how many words can you type a minute? I dunno, 70-80 I’m guessing. Do you know anyone who plays World of Warcraft? Do you play? I probably know some people. I don’t play it myself. Have you ever been called a nerd? Sure. What is something that you do not like that everyone else seems to love? Billie Eilish. Has anyone ever emulated you to the point of your annoyance? No. Do you enjoy poetry? No, I hate it. Have you ever written a poem? Only when we had to for school. What is your nation of orgin? Philippines. Do you need make-up? I never put it on, so no. Are you familiar with the HTML code language? I would work the HTML codes in Tumblr themes back when I still had more active fandom blogs so at one point, I was. I’ve mostly forgotten them by now, though. Do you still use MySpace? Nope. When is the last time you sent an e-mail? Like two hours ago. I had to forward an email to someone. Do you Bing or Google? Google. Have you ever heard of Goodsearch? They donate money to charities every time you search. Oooh really? That’s nice. There’s also a search engine that plants a tree (if I’m not mistaken) for a certain number of searches as well. It’s nice that initiatives like these exist. Do you have a specific fragrance of candle you prefer? Not really cos I’m not a big candle user. What kind of car do you drive? I have a Mitsubishi Mirage hatchback. Do you like it when it snows? I’ll let you know once I actually experience snow. If you could be any Harry Potter character, who would you be and why?

I made some notes on the first episode of the first season of the new The Worst Witch. I thought what better time to post them than when the second season it out and everyone’s talking about that.
In the interests of full disclosure, I have read the books, but it was a very long time ago and the details are hazy. The 90’s TV show, however, is very dear to me and I’ve rewatched many times (including recently), so there will be comparisons and references to plot points in that. I haven’t seen the film.
Starting with the outside world was interesting. I liked meeting Mildred’s mum. Cackle’s was always in such a bubble. There’re different angles they can take with a parent taking an active part in the story. Especially as she seems to be a lovely person with a good relationship with Mildred. I’m always up for more child heroes with decent and not dead parents. Mildred making her mum breakfast in bed because she was working late was adorable and tells you so much about both her as a person and her relationship with her mother.
My first thought about the castle itself was it was much too bright. What happened to the grey and dreary castle where the drafts blew through the windowless glass? Between CGI and sunshine, it’s much too cheery to be a traditional British boarding school. Too much colour. Even if the students weren’t wearing all black because they’re not students yet, there’s no excuse for the teachers.
It was a bit weird when Maud was talking about keeping magic secret from non-witches. I felt like I’d wandered into Harry Potter. I’d normally be the first person to point out that the original Worst Witch predates Potter and comparisons are a waste of time, but then there was Miss Cackle offering Mildred a lemon drop. That was very Dumbledore. It feels like they’re trying to emphasise the Harry Potter similarities, when it can stand just fine on its own.
All the young actresses were brilliant, especially the girl playing Maud. The friendship between her and Mildred is already delightful. It comes so naturally, based on mutual kindness, enthusiasm, and a desire to be helpful. I did have a bit of a double take at blonde Ethel Hallow, but that does make sense for the most privileged character. She was definitely Ethel, from the moment we saw her flying with smug perfection.
I will admit I miss Jadu and Ruby (the first because I hoped she could have some actual storylines of her own before the last episode, the second because who doesn’t want a witch who can build a time machine whilst school?) I’m assuming Enid will appear a few episodes later, like in other versions. I’m also wondering if we’ll see Fenny and Griz. I hope so.
As for the teachers…look, Kate Duchêne is Miss Hardbroom to me. She always will be. I feel chills going through me every time she’s on screen. She occupies a very special place in my heart and has done since I was about six. When they did The New Worst Witch, I turned over the moment I realised it wasn’t my HB. Which is to say, they could have had the best actress in the world playing HB here and it still wouldn’t have been the same to me. It’s a personal thing, nothing to do with objective quality.
That said, Raquel Cassidy was very good. The voice in particular created just the right kind of menace. I was worried they had gone past strict and conservative into evil for a while, but the way she stopped the duel to protect Mildred and hinted to her later was beautiful. It showed she was a teacher first, with her instinct to look after a child. She also seemed to put her loyalty to Miss Cackle above her personal ideals, which was interesting (and it’s what Agatha didn’t anticipate). There was a real closeness between them when Miss Cackle was turned back into a human – something more than just being colleagues (it tweaked my subtext sense). We didn’t go that deeply into their relationship before, so I’m looking forward to learning more.
Speaking of Miss Cackle, Clare Higgins fitted into the role perfectly. She seemed and kind and gentle as she should, in contrast to HB. I’m generally in favour of harmless old ladies being secretly dangerous and powerful, so I mostly liked the reveal at the end. We never saw why Miss Cackle was at the top of the hierarchy in the old show (except she inherited the castle), so it was nice to give her that. I’m just not sure how I feel if it takes away from Miss Hardbroom, who was always depicted as the strongest witch (think them waking her up, rather than Miss Cackle, to deal with the Uninvited). Miss Cackle had the people skills, Miss Hardbroom the raw power. If Miss Cackle now has the raw power, I’m not sure how it’ll affect the balance. There’s more than one way to be strong.
Miss Drill was always my favourite teacher, and I am glad to see she was included in the diversification of the cast. I’m glad in general about how many non-white faces there were at the school. That’s what I expect from a more modern adaption (though, again, why cut Ruby and Jadu). I do have misgivings about Miss Drill apparently being a witch? Some of the best stuff in the original show was the alienation she felt as the only non-witch member of staff and the kinship that gave her with Mildred. It added something more to the overall feel of the show, plus being a major factor in her conflicts with Miss Hardbroom. She doesn’t have a lot of personality established in this first episode, so I’m a little worried they’ve taken away her most distinguishing trait.
Also, she called Miss Hardbroom “HB” to her face? Since when did teachers do that?
Miss Bat suffered even more on the personality front. I can understand that the depiction of her mental health in the old show wasn’t the greatest. They couldn’t have her being constantly mocked by the rest of the staff and running into the cupboard because she was so hurt. However, I think there could have been better ways to adapt it without taking away all her mental health problems and leaving her just kind of…pleasant in the most non-descript way possible.
The cook didn’t seem right either. I’m not sure about Miss Gullet and what her point is, but I’m going to wait and see on that one.
I was a little thrown off by some of the name changes (and I know some of them are book compliant instead of show compliant, but, as I said, I know the show better). They’re not bad, they’re just going to take some getting used to.
Even more unsettling was the introduction of Esmerelda Hallow. I just don’t know why she’s there. Plus there’s only one witch I associate with the name Esmerelda, and I don’t think a Hallow is going to be able to live up to her. She also seems to have zero of the traits I associate with her sisters (will we still meet Sybil?). I was even more confused by her general niceness than I was her existence.
Glad to see there weren’t any boys at all (except the frog, and we don’t know who he is yet – it’s fun seeing them plan for plots I know are coming) in the first episode. It makes it clear what the show is about. Wizardry can come later (and I am curious to see if they’ve changed the relationship between witchcraft and wizardry).
Similarly, I like the early establishment of Mildred’s ability at art. That came a little bit out of nowhere before, and it’s nice to see she has something she can do well. I’m not so sure about her complete ignorance of the magical world. One of the things I really liked about Mildred’s school struggles was that they weren’t really her fault. Sometimes she was careless, but mostly she just wasn’t very academically or magically minded and that was OK. She was still the hero and she had other traits to make up for her weaknesses. By making her mistakes the result of ignorance rather than carelessness, you make the fault external. It’s not because of who Mildred is, and I think that’s a shame. It was nice to see Mildred could save the school regardless of her magical ability.
I mostly liked how Mildred saved the day, though wasn’t the pondweed meant to be picked at midnight? How did she have the sliver of bee’s brain? Perhaps that’s why the levitation was a bit more…wild than in the practical test. However, the duel did look cool and “Never mistake kindness for weakness” is a valuable moral to take away from it. All in all, good setup with lots of promise for the future.
Small things:
I missed the school song in the opening.
I also miss my long, chanted spells. I know they were cumbersome, but I loved them dearly.
“Well met,” is an interesting bit of worldbuilding. I think I like it.
I’m glad my Agatha Cackle detection sense is still working. I recognised her instantly, both as Agatha and pretending to be Ada.
Mother? Not Granny Cackle?
I hope HB still pops out of nowhere at the most inconvenient moments.
Overall, the show made me laugh and made me want to watch more. I suppose you can’t ask for much more than that.

Brace yourselves A very long essay (like, a thesis) on the British class system with references to Harry Potter Part 1
OK, I did this already. It’s long, but stick with it anyway. And watch the videos.
In Britain, people are broadly split into 3 social groups: working-class, middle-class and upper-class. The factors which determine which class you belong to are varied and complex, but in a nutshell include: how wealthy you are, where you live (location and type of dwelling), what variety of English you speak (or whether you speak English), what level of education you have, what you do for a job, what you do in your free-time, who you are friends with, what you like and dislike, your political views and affiliation, the nature and number of the opportunities you have in life and, in some ways the most important of all, which family you belong to, how far you can trace your ancestors back through history and what those ancestors did and who they were.
Although people who fall into the following categories are often working-class because our society, like any other country’s, is still trying to eradicate prejudice, these categories are not factors in and of themselves: race, nationality, religion, disabilities, gender and sexuality.
It is not the case that people’s class is constantly mentioned or even at the forefront of one’s mind, nor does it harmfully imply natural divide in the way that, for example, the caste system in India does. Class is subtle, nuanced, exists unchallenged and often doesn’t occur to you as the cause of a problem unless you really go looking deeply for it. It is undoubtedly damaging, however. Your class determines your path in life. It determines where you will live, how much money you will have, what education you will be able to access, what job you will be able to do, who you will be able to socialise and have relationships with and what opportunities you will have access to.
It is impossible to outline concisely but accurately exactly what sort of person is in which class. I will aim to do my best here, with references to Harry Potter, since I want fans who aren’t British to be able to understand these nuanced class subtleties better.
A very crude, basic description is that working-class people do “unskilled” jobs, usually for minimum wage and earn just money enough to exist; middle-class people have professional jobs, an education higher than secondary school and earn enough money to live comfortably and buy things they want as well as things they need; upper-class people belong to certain families who can trace their ancestry back a long way and are usually very wealthy and often related to the royal family. Their lifestyles are often funded by taxpayers’ money.
An overview
It is already complex enough, but it gets even more murky. For one thing, there are layers within the classes. You can be lower or higher within your class and the terms “lower middle-class” and “upper middle-class” are very common. Where you come on these inter-class continuums affects your life just as much as which class you are in.
Secondly, there are also two distinct groups who don’t fit in to the three classes. 1) very wealthy people, usually celebrities, who are super-rich but come from lower class backgrounds. A great example of this is the Beckhams. They are so rich from his football career and her music career that he had his wages paid directly to charity in the latter half of his career. They live lavishly, spend a fortune on designer clothes and their wedding was an imitation of a royal wedding. However, they spent years being mocked for seeming stupid and uncouth and it was all because of one thing: how they sound. As soon as they speak, you can hear that they started life near the bottom of the social ladder. I will do a separate post about language and voice at some point. Here’s a clip from an impressions show.
youtube
2) an “under-class” who lives on state welfare benefits and doesn’t work. These people tend to not have enough money for their needs and their chances and aspirations in life are extremely limited. People in this category range from those unable to work through disability to drug addicts to genuinely unpleasant people who would rather take hand-outs from the government than contribute to society. The right-wing media portrays them as lazy, worthless and a blight; the left-wing media portrays them as misrepresented people who have been failed by society. The truth is in the middle.
Thirdly, unlike upper-class, what constitutes “working-class” and “middle-class” are not fixed concepts. Rather, they are in a state of constant flux and progression. What those terms meant when I was a child and Harry Potter was being written are not the same as they mean now, nor were they the same as when my parents or grandparents were children. It changes slightly with every generation. Nowadays, the middle-class is much bigger than it was then. Efforts have been made to get working-class children to go to university and some do, meaning that more people are moving into the middle-class. We are more aware of class prejudice than we used to be and many people do try to avoid it, therefore options have opened up for working-class people and allowed them to access things they couldn’t before. The technological revolution has made a huge difference. The internet allows people to travel everywhere and find anything from their own sitting room and has given some people aspirations they wouldn’t have had before.
Conversely, the definitions of ‘working-class’ have broadened. Many people now consider themselves working-class when, in my parents’ youth, they would have been middle-class due to the house or street they lived in or the fact that they manage to go on holiday every year. The two lower classes are definitely more mixed than before and the lines between them are blurring. I guarantee someone younger than me will read this and think “I consider myself working-class but I have never had any of the experiences OP describes”. Another thing which has made a huge difference is the collapse of British industry. In the 80s and 90s, the majority of the working-class worked in factories or similar industrial businesses. Then the powers that be closed them all and sold production to firms abroad who could make things more cheaply, and unemployment boomed. Literally, cities just died. Some people eventually got different jobs, though jobs where their skills were undervalued, and which alienated them from their work value. Many people didn’t. Many people had to live off state welfare benefits, which were not adequate and somehow out of that, that “under-class” I mentioned was born. Many of the people who choose to live off the state are people whose families lost their livelihoods at that time and ended up broken; just gave up.
Linked to that, another factor which makes it all quite complex is pride. Those people (the film The Full Monty is all about this btw) were proud of what they did with their skills and then they were just thrown away like they were nothing. They lost their pride and many never got it back. Working-class people, in particular, tend to be fiercely proud of being working-class. I won’t comment on the psychology of that here, but to illustrate: my husband won’t have it that he is middle-class now. He is. His argument is that he has to work, but that’s a huge over-simplification of what “working-class” means. He can afford holidays abroad and organic food, he lives in a detached house in the countryside, he owns 3 houses which he rents out to tenants (and they are kept to a very high standard). He is without a doubt middle-class. A teacher at school once claimed he was working-class for the same reason, and a lecturer at university did, but it represents a fundamental misunderstanding of what it really means to be working-class. There’s a good book about going back to your roots called Pies and Prejudice by the radio DJ Stuart Maconie, who is northern working-class originally but now lives a privileged life in London. He was inspired to write it when he had a friend over for lunch one day and they asked where the sun-dried tomatoes were, and he replied that they were by the cappuccino maker. Such ludicrously posh items made him stop in his tracks and think “what the hell has happened to me?”
Tumblr media
Lastly, it is possible to move both within your class and to another class. This is called social mobility. I, for example, grew up almost at the bottom of the working-class. I lived in a very deprived area, had few opportunities and my family had only just enough money to subsist. I am now technically lower middle-class. I now live in a detached house in a sought-after village, I do a professional job, I have enough money to buy more things than just those I need and I am educated to postgraduate level. However, moving up a class is extremely difficult and many people never manage it. Those who do always carry markers of not quite fully belonging there, such as accent, vocabulary, etiquette etc. I have managed it, in short, because I am intelligent enough to have won scholarships for university, because my immediate family are also intelligent and exposed me, as much as possible, to other cultures, and because I married a builder whose parents had moved up the social ladder a little and gave him some land to build a house on. It is mostly down to luck and chance.
Sometimes people are very sensitive about their class and worry about it; sometimes British people themselves are not fully aware of it all. Such people are usually (and this is not meant nastily): middle-class from birth, therefore comfortable enough not to have thought much about it, or younger than early 20s, therefore they haven’t experienced and analysed hindrances arising from their class or had a university education where they would learn more about it. Very young people might have even more trouble getting their heads around it because of sheer lack of world experience and the modern world: it’s not quite the same as it used to be since the internet took over, since that brings opportunities to everyone that lower-class people might not have had before the turn of the century.
The reasons for class and the role of history
The reasons why this class system exists are even more complex. Keeping it brief, there are two key factors. 1. to maintain power for a privileged few and ensure the populace doesn’t try to take that power (people are too busy, pre-occupied and uneducated to challenge it). 2. historical influence: we used to have a feudal system where serfs worked the land for rich land-owners in exchange for living on it. During the Industrial Revolution some people managed to gain capital and power through production and factory ownership. They became the middle-class. This has evolved into what we have today.
The importance of the influence of the feudal system cannot be overstated if people are to grasp why race isn’t as critical a social issue here as it is in the USA. The USA is still recovering from Slavery, by which I mean the historical, slave trade triangle event, not the concept of enslavement. A major part of that country’s history is brutally, sickeningly forcing people who aren’t white to do the manual toil on US shores that kept privileged people in their positions of power. Racism and racist slurs equate to supporting slavery. Britain has a different history. Whilst we played an awful role in the slave trade, we didn’t have slave plantations on our shores. It wasn’t coloured people who did the toil. It was the working-class. For centuries the working-class were forced, at times with as much violence and as little food and rest as African slaves endured in the Americas, to do back-breaking work all day without a break, simply to have a place to shelter and some food. Under the feudal system this meant in the fields and during the Industrial Revolution it meant in dirty, dangerous factories. The working-class was, and to some extent still is, enslaved. That doesn’t mean that racism doesn’t exist here or that it’s not despicable. It does and is. But it doesn’t have the same connotations. Slurs about class, however, DO have those connotations. Here, making nasty comments about, or looking down your nose at, working-class people equates to supporting slavery, albeit more subtly than racism equates to supporting slavery in the US. Disparaging comments about the working-class are a bit like, for example, calling a black man “boy” in the US. But because a) it is more subtle and b) much longer has passed since we had the feudal system and the Industrial Revolution than has passed since America had slavery, class slurs in Britain are less emotive, emotionally-charged and offensive than racial slurs in America.
What makes you upper-class?
I mentioned that ancestry plays a huge role in determining class. I also mentioned that there is social mobility (moving up to a higher class or even down to a lower one). There are certain families who can trace their ancestry back centuries and are descended from royals and rich land-owners. That means that certain surnames and bloodlines are prestigious. These people form the upper-class.
It is very unusual for upper-class people to mix with working or middle-class people. I, for example, have only met one upper-class person in my life. They go to different schools from the rest of us and do different things socially. For this reason, upper-class people tend to marry other upper-class people, in fact most would frown upon anyone who did otherwise. Because it’s all about family status, marriage would be the only real way you could move up to upper-class, but it’s practically unheard of. You are born into the upper-class. If you inherit the surname, you inherit the status that goes with it, regardless of any other factors. For this reason, upper-class families tend to be ‘pure’. Here is a newspaper article illustrating my point. The comments are also interesting. It’s from a popular right-wing paper.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2838183/How-having-right-surname-sets-LIFE-ancestors-social-status-determines-rich-ll-study-claims.html
Another illustration: when Prince William married Kate Middleton, whose family are crazily rich, the media and nation went into a frenzy over the fact that he was marrying “a commoner”. They used that exact word. Kate’s family became wealthy during the Industrial Revolution and she, her siblings, her father, grandfather and great-grandfather all attended expensive, prestigious public schools. Her family is incredibly wealthy, has the best opportunities available and were friends of the royals for decades before she met William. Nevertheless it was huge news for her to marry William. Why? Because she wasn’t upper-class. Despite the privileged life she led, despite her family’s centuries of wealth, she didn’t have the name or the blood to be considered upper-class. It all comes down to family status. In crude terms, William married below him, and they were very lucky that it wasn’t a scandal. Some people were offended by it, in fact. Remember that in the 1930s Edward VIII had to abdicate in order to marry “a commoner”. To most people “a commoner” is someone normal, but here it is someone who doesn’t have the name or blood of a small, select group of families. It’s also interesting to note that she is rarely called ‘Kate’ by the media since joining the upper-class, but rather her full name ‘Kathrine’.
Two things out of this: firstly, don’t fall into the trap of assuming being upper-class doesn’t affect your life negatively. The lower-classes have worse struggles, but it would be wrong not to appreciate the difficulties associated with being upper-class. The expectations of you, the responsibility you have to your name, limitations on who you are allowed to socialise with and love, constant media and public attention and pressure to be someone important. It is exactly these issues which led Prince Harry to have a troubled youth.
Secondly, it is because of all this that many people feel it is incorrect to view death eaters in Harry Potter as a metaphor for Nazis. They are really a metaphor for the ‘pure-blood’ upper-class families. They do not round people up and exterminate them. They use power and influence to gain more power and to subjugate those they see as inferior because they do not share their names or blood. They do not base their ideologies on pseudoscientific claims about appearance, like phrenology. They base it on inherited blood. To highlight the fact of the class metaphor even further – there is a way to become effectively upper-class without being born or married into it. It is a lesser upper-class, because you don’t have the family name or blood, but you still become a de facto nobleman. The way is to become a Lord. You can google how to do it in the real world if you’re interested, but clearly the key point is that Tom Riddle’s adoption of the title Lord represents the change in his class. He does it because he knows he has upper-class blood but can’t prove it, so he has to indicate his status another way.
Why is Harry Potter about class?
The three blood statuses of wizards equate to the three classes: muggle born = lowest-class (working-class in the real world), half-blood = middle-class and pure-blood = upper-class.
It is because of this that the word “mudblood” is not the slur many people take it to be. It is not the wizarding version of the N word. It is not as offensive as that. It is offensive, yes, but it is not an unforgivable utterance which betrays inherent racism. The fact that the characters are prepared to repeat it when reporting it has been said shows that it is not comparable. I can’t even think the N word. If I think about it I don’t say it, in my mind I literally say “the N word”. Both characters and fans are prepared to say “mudblood”. It is not the same.
The fact that Voldemort and Snape are high-ranking death eaters also proves the story is not a metaphor for racial aggression: they are half-bloods and Snape comes from a working-class background and yet they have moved from their groups to be prominent members of the highest group. They have moved from lower classes to upper classes. It hasn’t happened by marriage like in the real world and it was very difficult – they had to be great wizards to manage it. But they did manage it. It is not possible to change your race, but you can change your class. Therefore, the wizarding war is a metaphor for class struggles not racial struggles, therefore “mudblood” is a nasty way of saying “commoner”. If you have dirty blood you aren’t part of the pure, select group. You don’t belong to the wizard upper-class. People shouldn’t say “mudblood” because it implies inferiority and enslavement, but if you do say it you are not racist, it isn’t the same as being racist, and isn’t as offensive or as unforgivable. It’s only slightly more offensive than saying “chav” or “ned” in a nasty tone of voice.
So it would be great if people could stop calling Snape a racist based on him saying “mudblood” one time as a teenager under extreme stress.
This all also explains why joining the death eaters was attractive to half-blood, working-class Snape in his youth and why JKR said he did it because he thought it would give him power and impress Lily. Those people who are confused because Lily wouldn’t be impressed by his joining the wizard Nazis – this is the answer. It’s because he wasn’t joining the wizard Nazis, he was joining the wizard upper-class.
Real class-based insults
A quick note on terminology – “chav”, or “ned” in Scotland, means a similar thing to “white trash”, but anyone can be a chav/ned, regardless of skin colour. The opposite of that insult is “toff”, which means upper-class and posh, but it’s negative. Here’s a picture of fictional chavs from the comedy TV series Little Britain.
Tumblr media
Here are some comedy clips of some chavs interacting with the higher classes. You might not make all of it out, especially if English isn’t your first language, because working-class people generally speak with strong regional accents and use dialects (this couple are from London). You will probably notice though, bits where you can understand it much better – that’s because they are switching into “proper English”, or their version of it.
These vocab tips might help you out:
‘to have it off’ means to ‘to have sex’ as well as simply turning something off
‘winalot’ is a dog food brand; ‘camelot’ is the national lottery organisation
‘giro’ means welfare cheque

Education and class
In general, working-class people go to state-maintained schools.  These vary enormously in quality, mostly in terms of what resources and  spaces can be bought and built for the budget the government gives them.  Middle-class people normally go to these schools too, though a substantial  number go to grammar schools, which are state schools that you have to pass a  test to go to when you are 10/11, or private schools, which are schools  independent of the state which charge fees and can be boarding schools. Both  of these have good sites and resources and get good results.
Upper-middle class and upper-class people go to public schools, which  is another level of private school. They are incredibly expensive, very old, boarding schools which select students based on who they are, as in, what family they belong to, and how much money they have. Teaching and the content  of lessons is similar across all three types of schools; the difference is in  funding – what the school can afford to offer in terms of books, experiences, classrooms, class sizes etc. Having a public school on your CV basically guarantees you entry to any university.
Private and public schools get good exam results because of their facilities and the fact that the students’ families are educated and encourage (or pressure) them to achieve highly. State secondary schools get mixed results because their facilities and resources are not adequate and many working-class families don’t value academic achievement, so don’t encourage it. A lot of students are unable to cope with the level of critical analysis required to succeed at A-Level (qualification at 18 years old) because independent thinking and reading non-fiction hasn’t been encouraged at home. I left school without finishing my A-Levels because I found that too difficult and had to build up my abilities gradually until I was able to handle that level.
The top universities now have to release data showing they are trying to admit students from working-class backgrounds, but nevertheless attendance by working-class kids at top universities like Oxford and Cambridge is low, because those universities demand things working-class kids don’t have: varied extra-curricular activities, the ability to pass an entrance exam, a proven track record of independent enquiry, enough money to pay double the fees most universities charge, the etiquette (e.g. dining manners) required to interact with all the upper-class kids etc. This is a poor state of affairs and denies working-class students access to ground-breaking research and thinkers. The bigger issue, however, is that it keeps them away from power. All the influential people: politicians, big businessmen, investors, lawyers etc, go to the same few universities. They meet there, get to know each other through secretive clubs (google the Bullingdon Club for more info) and this enables them to network and make contacts, which they use later in life. Working-class people never get those contacts, therefore find it almost  impossible to get any power.
To demonstrate the prejudice, an anecdote:
My friend Claire is middle-class and went to a grammar school. She got As in her A-Levels and went to Cambridge University. On the first day she met the people who would be on her course as well. Every single one of them  had gone to private or public school. When she told them which school she had come from, they said, with what they believed was genuine praise and kindness, “wow, you’ve done really well to manage to get As and get into Cambridge considering where you’ve come from”. She isn’t even working-class. She had led a pretty privileged life. Yet they were astounded and condescending towards her. They viewed her achievement of coming from a middle-class grammar school with good exam results the way many of us view Malala’s success and entrance to university after her experiences in the Swat Valley. They were, like many people of that class, totally disconnected from popular reality.
This leads me to the defence of another Slytherin: Slughorn. Some people view him as racist because of his comment that Lily’s academic success was even more impressive since she was a muggle-born. As I have shown already, blood status in HP is a metaphor for class struggles not for racial  tensions, so it is not correct that he is racist. In fact, he was doing what those people on Claire’s course were doing: expressing shock that someone from the (wizard) working-class could achieve so highly in academia. It’s inherent prejudice, it’s patronising, yes. But it’s not racist, and it is even well-intentioned.
Another point to mention here is access to knowledge outside the content of lessons. That has improved a lot with the internet, but still, access to books is limited. A few years ago the government started talking about closing some libraries and it caused an uproar. Without libraries, most working-class people would have very limited access to books. It is yet another case of failing to understand that most people do not have the privileges they do, as well as desiring to limit the extent to which the working-class can get an education, so as to keep them in their place.
Personal hygiene and class
This issue is very close to my heart because as a child I had very poor personal hygiene and I was bullied terribly for it. It is not a nice thing to have to admit, but some working-class people don’t have brilliant personal hygiene. It isn’t unusual for very low-class people to smell, have bad teeth, not change their clothes regularly, rarely change their bed sheets and not to wash every day. To take myself as an example first, when I was little I was not bathed regularly, nor was I made to clean my teeth. I hate saying this, because I know it’s horrible, and believe me I am OCD with washing now, but when I was a child I went weeks without a bath or a change of clothes. We didn’t have a shower. It was neglect, there’s no way around it. However, it wasn’t malicious. In my parents’ generation and before them, it was normal not to wash very often if you were working-class. These days, hygiene practises amongst the working-class are much much better, but even still you do even now get smelly, dirty people.
It wasn’t just me. In my year (grade) alone at secondary school there were three students who were showered at school by the matron (in a kind way) because they didn’t wash at home.
Why? Well obviously that is complex, but I’ll try to explain. It is absolutely linked to being working-class. For a start, facilities were a problem because of poverty. When I was born (1985) we didn’t have a bath or shower, our bathroom was just a toilet. We also didn’t have a washing machine. We just couldn’t afford those things. To use a bath we had to go to my grandparents’ house. When I was a few years old we got a tin bath, which is like an unconnected bathtub that you fill with jugs. We didn’t have much money for water and soap though so use of it was limited. My mother washed clothes in it as well by hand. When I was around 5 or 6 we got a proper bath. However, our house was so cold that it was physically painful to use it. We didn’t have any heating except for an open fire in the living room and this was the north of England I’m talking about. In winter the bed sheets got damp from the cold. When we had the tin bath you could put it in front of the fire, but the plumbed in bath was upstairs in a bathroom. My dad braved it more often than my mum, and since I was little I didn’t bath myself. Those three students that got showered at school I mentioned did so because even by the late 90s, they still didn’t have a bath or shower at home.
Another reason is lack of education. People just aren’t taught about personal hygiene at school, so if they don’t already know at home you won’t find out either.
On top of that, many working-class people are too busy or pre-occupied to remember about or find time for things like washing. They work long hours, often multiple jobs, and when you aren’t sure if you’ve got enough money to eat, getting washed just doesn’t seem that important.
Another factor is depression. Living in poverty, working hard just to survive, knowing you have little opportunity in life creates depression. Depressed people can lose interest in things like personal hygiene.
Not washing is so ingrained in working-class history that the phrase “the great unwashed”, originally a term used by Victorian authors, is now a reasonably common way of referring to the masses. It is used both derogatorily and ironically:
https://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/the-great-unwashed
I was bullied terribly, especially at primary school, for being smelly and dirty. It was constant, day in, day out, and is definitely the reason I am now over-the-top in cleanliness. One of the main things people made fun of was my hair. I was bullied for having greasy hair to the extent that, on a school trip where we were staying overnight, 2 girls that I was forced to share a room with, having tortured me for hours, including ruining my shoes, said they would stop it if I washed my hair.
I understand that some people say cruel things when they are young, but the fact remains that if you choose to make fun of someone because they are dirty or greasy or smelly, you are actually making fun of them for being poor, not having basic facilities at home, not having been taught proper personal hygiene because their parents didn’t know or were too busy or depressed. You are behaving like you are socially superior to them.
This is obviously the main reason why I love Snape. I immediately saw myself in him, and every time someone mentions his greasy hair it alludes to his working-class childhood. When he joined the death eaters he moved up the ladder, but the disadvantaged start he had in life is still written all over him. It is also why I love Slytherin – the house is populated mostly by pure-bloods, or in other words by upper-class people, and yet they embrace him and allow him social mobility anyway. They looked at him and saw something other than his class.
It’s not just about wealth
Since membership of the upper-class is brought about through ancestry, it is possible to be upper-class and not rich. Most upper-class people are descended from rich people and have inherited wealth alongside their name and blood, but occasionally there’s a family whose ancestors lost most of the money, so they are left with just a title and the estate (house and land). It costs a lot of money to run an upper-class house because they are invariably old, listed, castle-y buildings in the countryside.  That means they are big and cold and cost a fortune to heat. Stuff breaks or wears out so the maintenance costs a fortune as well. They might be so big that they need staff as it’s too much for just the family to keep on top of, so there are wages to pay too. On top of that, they try to live an upper-class lifestyle to keep up appearances, which is very expensive. A good few years ago now there was a documentary called The Fucking Fulfords, about an upper-class family who couldn’t afford their lifestyle or house and swore all the time. Even though they weren’t wealthy they didn’t get jobs, largely because they had been brought up to believe it was beneath them, and as a result they are lazy fucks. It’s on youtube if you want to watch it.
youtube
Lazy is not the only stereotype of the upper-class. There are quite a few, all based in fact, such as that they are eccentric and strange. Fulford is definitely that. Another is that they are stupid. Since they don’t understand life in the same way as regular people, because they don’t have jobs, some things they don’t know are astonishing. There was a reality TV series years ago where this entitled, upper-class girl did working-class, minimum wage jobs, and it was painful to watch. She didn’t know how to do basic tasks like make a cup of tea, because she never did anything for herself at home. She didn’t know what a gas bill was. A lot of these people barely wipe their own arses so it’s no wonder they appear incapable. The Monty Python sketch “twit of the year” utilises that stereotype to make fun of the upper-class. It also pokes fun at the stereotype of having ridiculous multiple-barrelled surnames. My husband does building work for an upper-class family occasionally and the woman’s surname is Booth-Clibburn-Shimmins. The Pythons are doing that thing with their faces because yet another stereotype is that upper-class people talk weird.

Right, let’s start with this as my first opinion post (which will more than likely be thrown into my ‘list of cringe posts’.... That may be the reason why it’s in my ROUGH PORTFOLIO blog).   One of my good friends shared this post with a comment
“[He] had time, he was just lazy, lol”  As a writer, I’d like to say “give this man a break!”
And as a friend I’d like to tell my friend “and you’re not?”
But this post isn’t to lecture or scold my friend. It’s meant to educate him a little on the reality of writing, it’s meant to pull up the curtain to show the truth about the world that exists behind the fictional one that so many people love.
Back in 2016, a video of a Q&A conference with G Martin and Stephen King was uploaded.
I remember watching someone else’s video who included brief clips from this particular video. One clip was of G Martin asking King how he manages to publish so many books and so often. Then another clip was of G Martin opening up and sharing his feelings about the writing process (or the creative process as people are more familiar with).
I realized how familiar those questions sounded, and I was reminded of an amateur asking their idolized writer.
If I remember correctly (might have to watch a few clips again to confirm), G Martin opened up about his struggles of being a writer. It was all quite light-hearted in the way he explained it but I found myself understanding everything he said.
It was also a moment of realization to me how writers, no matter how successful they are, will always end up struggling through their projects. it is part of the process and part of the journey.
I believe, after hearing these success stories and about these authors who make it to New York Top Sellers, we fall under the impression that writers are machines.
Remember when JKR literally locked herself in a hotel room till she finished the final book of her series? She imprisoned herself so that she could have the time to finish the final book of her series of Harry Potter.
After hearing about that, I’m sure many immediately believe all writers are exactly like this. Once a story becomes a big deal and the title is on everyone’s lips we have a hard time believing that the writer isn’t having a smooth ride. Why should they struggle, right? They made it! They broke through the huge obstacle every writer wishes to surpass. They’re popular, and loved and are making big bank on their book(s)!
Well, no. Just because they’ve succeeded in publishing their book(s) does not mean that they’re out of the woods. There are new obstacles to face, new mountains to conquer.
And I don’t believe it’s any different with G Martin. He was experiencing this similar process and probably is still struggling through. Possibly this may be the reason (among other things) as to why it’s caused him to fall so far back.
This is quite a unique situation.
Look at it.
We have this amazing writer who’s managed to publish about 90% of their series who is experiencing the very similar and relatable human experience of struggle. What’s more is it’s shown quite publicly.
It’s sad to see, but it also stands as a valuable lesson for others to understand that we writers aren’t these god-like beings who are invincible to defeat and destruction. There is always a struggle, just like the beloved heroes and heroines of our favourite tales.
And struggle does not always mean that the writer has given up, or is lazy. I highly doubt G  Martin is someone who’d just yawn and sit back with their feet up saying “well, I’ve published almost all my books, why should I publish the next one? I got what I wanted”
I sincerely believe he isn’t a lazy person. He’s just a writer (a very succesful and gifted writer) who is in a rut and can’t get by the wall that’s decided to crash down on him. Imagine the pain he must feel, the utter humiliation...and image that pain extending for that long.
He hasn’t published (let alone completed) his final book in seven years. Seven years! Can you imagine what that must do to him?!
How could anyone possibly think that it’s laziness stopping him instead? It blows my mind.
And, may I also add that he isn’t exactly procrastinating, either? Sure there were some funny articles/moments of him doing literally anything other than writing...but who are we to judge? Haven’t we all fallen victim to this unproductive and escaping behaviour?
Besides...the creative process is a very whacky road to take when detouring through our bumpy road. I mean, look at the movie Mother for crying out loud. If that isn’t whacky to you, then I’m afraid you might never have experienced the creative process (that’s exaggeration, by the way).
There are also other things that Martin has been working on, anyway. He hasn’t been completely unproductive (or at all!) Here are the things I’ve found he’s been up to since his last publishing...
Blogging: It gets both the attention of the press, allows a chance to update his fans without a 250 or 200 something character limit. He covers quite a few things about his writing, his projects and other things like opinion posts on game trade-offs.
Publishing: Books that aren’t the official series, but definitely the arms and legs of the series. He’s publishing books that hold extra information about beloved characters and families writte in text-book like format.
Editing and Publishing: Wild Cards is a series written by 40 individual authors and edited by G Martin himself. This is a fictional book series set in post world war two. An alien virus takes human DNA and alters it giving humans more...abhorrent traits along with strong super powers.
HBO Projects: G Martin is assisting by co-writing some of the scripts of the Game of Thrones spin-off series. While also being the executive producer of a show called Who Fears Death which is based on a fantasy novel written in 2010. This one is set in another post-apocalyptic future, this time in Sudan.
Comic Series: So, on top of everything else, G Martin is also working on his own comic series, Starport.  This is also set in scif-fi series that’s a mixture of a crime series and Man in Black.
So, can we really agree that this man is being “lazy”? Is he even procrastinating? I wouldn’t say so.
Remind yourselves that this man managed to publish not one, but a nearly complete series.
This homie’s got it hard, and he’s not only punishing himself for it, but he’s also being punished by others...worst of all, his fans. I can’t imagine that feeling, how scary it must feel under such an immense amount of pressure. I’m sure this guy can’t tweet a single thing without someone retweeting/commenting with a ‘when’s your final book finished’ ‘are you still working on the book?’ ‘did you give up?’ etc.  It’s a sad situation and it does not require people for ganging up on the poor guy and saying the things they do. He has shown his potential, and now he’s a little lost. Him saying he was (and still is) haunted every day (and night) by this, and how often he’d bang his head against his keyboard every time he’d write is completely relatable. In his words he said “...the show is going forward and I’m falling further backward.”
It’s as though his motivation and his flow has been cut like a string and now he’s trying to catch the wild, waving ends of them to reconnect them.
I hope that one day he does manage to catch the ends of that string, and I hope he manages to knot them tightly (with a light flame to burn a seal) so that he can finish the series.  Because I think we all can absolutely understand where this man’s coming from.
