Okay look, let’s legit talk about krbk and izuocha/tododeku for a sec here. If you follow/have read my shit before, I’m a big bkdk and togachako shopper. If you have a problem with that, just click off it’s not that hard. Expect bkdk and togachako opinions in this post. Now without further ado, let’s talk about the relationships in these three ships.

Now, honest to god, the least toxic community out of those three is tododeku and that’s probably bc it just isn’t as big as the other two. But what I WILL say is that you guys mischaracterize Katsuki, todoroki, and Izuku the most out of all three.

It’s the one ship that I legit can’t tolerate, no actual logical reason, I just find it annoying for no reason lol. But my personal feelings, don’t really matter here! We’re talking about the actual relationship stuff.

So, what makes this ship interesting? Well I’ve got to say that it’s the fact that todoroki is the first person to teach Izuku how to save someone who does not want to be saved. He was the first person who he had to make them save THEMSELF and WANT TO BE SAVED, and that’s a major part of Izukus development. It makes him start to question the villains of society, are they really all bad? Is it possible to save them? He also had a subconscious bias as he was once apart of the “can nots” of society. Quirkless, disabled, or useless quirked people kind of fit here. Same with villainous quirks. With all of this in mind, it made him look at shigaraki and legitimately think about how to save him. Todoroki taught him that part of hero work is also saving people psychologically.

Todoroki learned a lot from deku in how to accept himself as he is. “It’s your quirk not his!” Was something that stuck with him and continued to do so after the sports festival. He was also todoroki’s first actual friend. And btw, no matter how much y’all wanna say it, todoroki is NOT in the deku squad! Todoroki is friends with Katsuki and Izuku mainly, they are their OWN friend group outside of bkg or deku squads, remember that. Part of todoroki’s development as a character was being friends with BOTH of them, so I’m sorry, but if you hate Katsuki, todoroki does not like you. Just as deku doesn’t. Katsuki is a man with a burning temper and explosive personality, but he is also a positive burning sun in both of their lives.

Tododeku together is amazing, all about making each other be better in silent but nice ways. They’re also socially awkward buddies >:) But what he is not is a replacement for Katsuki. He is not mean, never is never will be. Nor is he jealous and vindictive towards Katsuki. You could probably say that he sees him as a one sided best friendship along with him and deku. (Those titles are actually reserved for uraraka and kirishima but whatever, not the point. Let todoroki live) But it’s also not canon so we’ll just make that a funny hc that’s kinda implied lol.

And I’ll finish this little analysis of them off with, I do not care about who you like shipping with Izuku, but if you actively make Katsuki or todoroki vindictive towards the other PLEASE GOD ADD THE TAG ON AO3 “OOC TODOROKI SHOTO” BC IM TIRED OF READING IT- This whole analysis has been to say, that you can not make todoroki a replacement for Katsuki. You just can’t. And that goes for any Katsuki ship or Izuku ship, they can’t live without the other. So please god stop mis characterizing them. It’s getting REALLY OLD really fast.

Now let’s move onto kiribaku. I’m saving izuocha for last bc they’re the least controversial and I won’t have to do as much work to write them out lmao. Anywho, kiribaku! I actually enjoy this ship sometimes, it’s not my favorite, but it’s still pretty good in my book.

I think the ship is cute and important for katsukis development, as him, kaminari, sero, jirou, and even todoroki call him out on his bs. They were the first friends he really had that weren’t afraid to say “you’re an asshole” to his face even if he yelled at them. They simply didn’t care. Hell, on the second day Katsuki met kaminari, he literally fucking called his personality flaming hot garbage, and jirou even teased him. The class just didn’t tolerate his bullshit. Even deku was like “what the fuck is happening IM the one who gets teased, not him” because unlike before, Katsuki was in the hero course at UA.

He didn’t HAVE the enablers from his teachers or his classmates like he did before. Aizawa didn’t take his shit just like kirishima didn’t take his shit. And this where their relationship truly starts.

Kirishima is exactly what Katsuki needs, someone who can take his quirk, calm his temper, and will call out his bullshit. He’s both a good friend and not an enabler, exactly what he needs. He’s also got a powerful quirk, something that Katsuki at this stage has to see so that he can make the close relationships he needs. He’s pretty much deku in his mind except without the same history and a powerful quirk. Dynamic wise at least.

But just like tododeku, it’s what he NEEDS at that moment. But, unlike tododeku, kiribaku as a relationship itself is enabling Katsukis quirk discrimination. You could even argue that their relationship itself is based in the fact that Katsuki projects deku onto kirishima.

Their friendship and relationship is amazing, but if Katsuki didn’t put some distance between them, it simply wouldn’t show his true development. Kirishima was a walking example of the early part of their first year and middle school life, Katsuki and kirishimas relationship is inherently built on Katsukis flaming hot garbage takes. I legit believe that kiribaku would be MORE toxic than bkdk because of how kirishima indirectly enables Katsukis behavior.

The reason why y’all have been so starved for content unless it’s a movie or an ova is bc horikoshi KNOWS this and so does Katsuki. He KNOWS his friendship was built on seeing kirishima as an enabler for his actions. Katsuki needs to focus on healing his relationship with Izuku more than hanging around kirishima. But y’all aren’t ready for that-

Okay, controversial opinions over, it’s izuocha time.

Izuocha is actually great. I love the ship! She’s exactly what Izuku needs, someone with unquestionable, undoubtable, support and love for Izuku. From day one she believed in him. He doesn’t NEED to prove anything to show that he is worth love and appreciation. Uraraka is the support that deku would have needed in middle school or before that would push him to become a hero REGARDLESS of a quirk.

Izuocha is key to Izukus journey into becoming a hero, so lets just put aside ofa for a moment to talk about it. Lets say Izuku never ran into AM and instead had uraraka as a flame of support at aldera, maybe even before junior high. Because what Izuku would have needed to become a quirkless hero would have been three things: money/gear, training from the right person, and undoubtable love and support. He had none of those things though. Inko never believed in him, his only friend bullied him due to misunderstandings, and all might rejected the very idea of it happening. Three of the most important people in Izukus life DOUBTED HIM, completely and utterly. Even iida thought he wasn’t taking it seriously and that he would never get in. All of the other challengers thought that he was just gonna be useless competition. Unlike everyone else in his life, Izuku never had to earn love and support from uraraka.

And it’s funny how he still ending up having the same things that made him a hero AFTER getting into UA. He HAD the gear (a quirk), he HAD the training (all might), and he HAD the constant support and love from uraraka that he never had to earn. She TAUGHT HIM that he was worth something no matter what. He never had to fight a villain to prove he was something for all might, or sift through years of Katsukis issues just to earn that friendship again, or show that he had the intelligence and support to inko. He was simply allowed to exist as he was to uraraka.

And this support is not just for Izuku either, because he taught her to think about the heroes, who saves the heroes when they’re the ones in danger? Just like how todoroki taught deku how to save someone psychologically, deku did the same for her. He is a key part of her hero journey. He taught her the things she needed to know, they were entirely about lifting each other up. Away from their worries, just them being able to believe in themselves and each other.

But, that’s the early stuff. This information is.. a little out of date, don’t you think? I mean, we had ALL this tension build up from toga vs ochako 1, all about Izuku and ochako (kinda), all of this tension lead to Ochakos speech and then.. nothing. 342 frankly, should have been the confession, because all of the tension that horikoshi had been building was there and then he just let it go. For seemingly no reason. Story wise at least. Or you could make the argument that it was also building tension, okay then, what about 348? THAT chapter should have been about revealing feelings yet it wasn’t. That’s why this information, with how romantic it sounded when I described it, feels so untrue now. And I feel like izuochas also see it, they feel it and know it deep down, yet a lot of them choose to be ignorant and continue to not update their information.

That’s my problem with this ship. They were cute at first, something I wouldn’t totally reject seeing. Hell, I even looked at fandom content of them, but now it just feels like nothing. It isn’t going anywhere, because guys, their development is done! They need to be with their character foils, bkdk, shigaraki and deku, and togachako. They NEED to do the development with THESE characters. They aren’t gonna be canon, because if they were, shigafo’s fight would be about ochako and Izuku, not Katsuki.

And that’s what all three of these need to understand. I know y’all have been starved for content of them, I get that, but the reason you have been is because of the narrative with them simply being done. The development is over. This is how stories work. Take for example, peridot, from Steven universe. Her character arc was done, and I remember seeing su fans getting upset at the lack of peridot content. But she was done. Her arc was over. The same goes for here.

Get over yourselves, please. These characters are not as important to each other as much as you think they are.

anyways YAAAA some more specific comments:

no designated driver bc none of them have their license and if any of them ever do get there it'd be bakugou easily

none of them have more relationship experience bc bkg has the social charm of a sardine, shinsou had that whole "villain quirk" bs going on growing up and kirishima has the self esteem of a roasted walnut so he can never even fathom somebody having a crush on him unless they like. spell it out for him. they start dating and experience firsts together hurrah!

as for arguments, bakugou starts a lot of pointless arguments over stuff like tv shows and video games and those are all brushed off as lighthearted but when it comes to serious arguments between the three of them they aren't very common, though bkg does usually start them and they're usually over things he feels very strongly about so it takes longer for them to settle it but if its like. an argument started by kirishima it's usually over in a day and if it's one started by shinsou it's usually a few days. obviously this can vary but overall the arguments for them don't pop up much anyways.

uhhh for the "would die protecting the others" thing, i actually saw a post the other day that kinda sparked a light bulb in my head about kiribaku but could also be applied to kirishinbaku: bakugou is an "id die for you" person because that's like giving up everything for him—everything he's worked for, everything he has planned for the future, etc—but kirishima and shinsou are "id kill for you" people because that would be like giving up their core morals for the others. that's not to say that i don't think bakugou would be okay with killing someone but i think he'd be able to cope with it easier if it was for people he loves than kirishima and shinsou which is why it holds more weight for those two, ya know?

izukacchako + promposal but w 3 ppl so it’s fun

Lol I chose all deku ships b/c I got mostly baku ones in my first game, not that that’s a bad thing, I just wanted to write more deku <3.

This is slightly different than my original idea (which was canon UA that was trying to implement a prom-like dance), but I really like it. American HS AU Izukacchako promposal

Katsuki was at the top of the food chain. He was an all-star athlete, top of his class, and a school heart throb despite his violent nature and his vehement dislike of his fans. Well—not all his fans. There were two very specific people that he actually (and embarrassingly) liked a lot, but he had no clue how to go about asking them out.

Izuku and Ochako had bonded first over being the underdog—they had both been the slightly picked on nerds during their freshman year—but now that they had grown into themselves, gaining the confidence that they were lacking during their time as underclassmen, and they were closer than ever, they had bonded over something else. Simping for Bakugou Katsuki.

Izuku had always expressed his deep admiration for his childhood friend and playmate. Despite growing apart in middle school due to different focuses and interests, Izuku had always maintained that Kacchan was so amazing and talented.

At first, Ochako had been kind of jealous of Katsuki, especially when she actually met him. Why did this heathen get Deku’s admiration? But as they grew closer as friends, and Ochako caught glimpses of the rare side of Katsuki that Deku always worshipped, she began to admire Katsuki just as much as her friend.

Izuku and Ochako had tried dating before. They had both liked each other more than anyone else—except Katsuki, of course—and they both agreed to give dating a try. It wasn’t bad by any means—they shared sweet kisses, went on fun dates, and just enjoyed each other’s company—but it always felt like something was missing, like they were trying to bake a cake without having an essential ingredient.

They decided to go back to being friends, but they still went on “dates” and sometimes even kissed occasionally when the moment felt right. But they both desperately wanted to find the thing that they were missing from their relationship—because they knew that at the very least they were platonic soulmates and they needed the missing piece for them to truly be soulmates in every aspect.

Katsuki was having a miniature crisis. Prom was a few weeks away and he needed to make a move before he was left alone again because he failed at confessing to the only people he had ever had feelings for.

“You got this, bro! Just go up and ask them! It’s not that deep.”

Katsuki sighed and rolled his eyes. “But it is that fucking deep, Shitty Hair! If I fuck up, like I usually fucking do when I try to talk to them, then they’ll just go together. Without me. I just—” Katsuki tangled his fists in his hair, “ARGGHHH! What the hell am I gonna do?!”

“Give them a note.” Katsuki whipped around to face Mina as she butted into his conversation with Eijirou. “You always abandon any face-to-face confrontations with them because you’re a bit of a coward in that department,” Mina held up a hand as Katsuki’s face contorted at the word “coward”, “BUT! You could give them a note. Or make a banner and go with the grand declaration route—but that doesn’t really seem like your style.

“I’ve seen your poetry, Kats. You have a way with words when you want to—so put that skill to use with your promposal!”

Katsuki thought for a moment before his face lit up with an idea. “Fuck. Mina, you’re awesome. I gotta go, but I’ll see you guys for game night tonight.” Mina grinned and Eijirou cheered him on as he bolted off the field and to his car.

“Hey, losers,” Izuku and Ochako turned away from the notebook they were pouring over to stare at Kacchan as he made his way towards the spot where they were sitting. Kacchan stopped and fidgeted for a second before glaring at them and asserting, “I-I...I fucking wrote something...so SHUT UP AND LISTEN!”

Katsuki cleared his throat, hoping that it would make the blush flaring on his cheeks die down, “Behold the sun—as it breaks the clouds and shines in on a gloomy day. Behold, as the golden glow washes my worries away and leaves me bare. All of my insecurities and flaws placed before his celestial feet as an offering; I hope and pray that he will accept.

“Behold the moon—as it’s silvery shine waters a dry and dark Earth. Behold, as it’s beam breaks my heart open and examines my yearning intentions. Alone and vulnerable under her shining gaze; I hope she is as merciful as she is beautiful.

“Deku….Floaty….Izuku….Ochako….To me, your presences rival the stars in their multiplicity and intensity. Shit...I could probably wax poetic about how you fuckers make me feel for eons….but the important question is….Will you guys go to prom with me?”

Katsuki looks up from where his eyes had taken interest in his shoes to see Izuku and Ochako clinging to each other and bawling their eyes out. He hesitates for a moment too long, and then he has both shoulders full of tear-damp crybaby. Izuku is blubbering and muttering, “yes, yes, yes,” into his left shoulder as Ochako sobs and nods frantically into his right. He shakes his head at the ridiculousness of the two idiots before revising his thought. They’re MY two idiots.

He’s lost in his romantic daydreams for a second before he gets smacked on both shoulders at the same time.

“Stupid, Kacchan! That was so sweeeeet…..I knew Kacchan was a good writer, but not that good!”

“Hey! What the fuck do you mean—”

“Ka-tsukiiiii—fuck you for making me cry. I expect the best prom night ever.”

Katsuki went to snap back, but then he froze before speaking—“You...You really mean it? You accept?!”

Ochako and Izuku share a look that Katsuki can’t decipher before nodding and both grabbing one of Katsuki’s hands and swinging his arms. Ochako hums before responding, “Yeah, I think we’ll go with you.”

Izuku reaches over and swats Ochako with his free hand while he speaks to Katsuki, “Don’t listen to her, Kacchan. We’d love to go with you. It just feels right, you know?”

Ochako nods, and Katsuki looks lost for a minute before smiling fondly, “Yeah...it feels perfect.”

1. Specifically hard/mean dom Shouto - Arguably my biggest pet peeve because Sho’s my favorite. He is the softest and sweetest of service tops to me. He’d never ever want to hurt or degrade his partner whether it’s physically or emotionally and I’ll die on that hill (I also really don’t think he’d want any of it done back to him but that’s another thing. Shouto is honestly just very vanilla and servicing to me).

2. Overly mean Megumi - I see this one sometimes too, and like… We’re gonna sit here and act like this boy likes to degrade you and isn’t also secretly very sweet with his s/o outside of the expected teasing/mock annoyance? We’re gonna do that?

3. Hypersexual Bakugou - this one doesn’t bug me quite as much, but I very strongly headcanon BKG as being on the ace spectrum and I don’t know how common it is, so I’ll include it, hehe.

4. Making Deku and Armin either too mean or pushovers - There’s a middle ground that I feel should be met with them? Other people have talked about it already though, so I won’t elaborate. They wouldn’t even be mean in general to me, the worst they’d get is like… Firm.

5. Creepy Bert/Bert slander in general - He’s my BOY and all of TikTok can fight me.

6. Really specific one, but reducing Reiner down to “I am the Armored Titan and he’s the Colossal Titan,” (again, TikTok) because I don’t find it funny anymore. Also, I very much want to give him the love he deserves, but I feel like time skip Reiner gets like… Infantilized? In a way that’s icky, especially with ships. But that could just be my observation. I could apply that to a lot of other characters with trauma, too.

7. Literally almost all of fanon Haikyuu. I’ve never seen such bad flanderization.

8. This is a me thing, but I hate how every character has to be a hard, mean daddy dom regardless of their personality. Like, I’m a total softie sexually and honestly not all that kinky so maybe that’s why, but it bugs me. I just want more soft loving, hehe.

2. mean megumi is something i never get LMFAO. like yea he gets irked with yuuji and nobaras antics but its not cause hes mean he's just more reserved in comparison to them??? this man isnt rude he grew up alone and learnt to survive, he's just like not vocal. hes still a sweet boy!!! just a tough exterior!!! i feel like he would be awkward with teasing stuff too, like he asks yuuji for advice because the first things he had fell flat LMAOOO

OR OR. he like. has scheduled jack off time. just to relive stress. the bakugo gets bitches agenda is true in the sense he has fans who would sell a left tit for him, but the bakugo also canonically calls everyone extras i don't see him like being so horny where he needs to stick it in anything ya know???? ace or demi bakugo makes very much sense to me too.

the thing that kills me about bakugou is when the plf go "having a powerful quirk means i'm better than you"and basically advocate for eugenics, it's horrible and corrupt, but when bakugou does it, it's lol funny and 'oh that gremlin.' in a recent chapter he made fun of the past OFA holders for having 'weak' quirks and dying and he said these things in front of Toshi, who has himself given so much. just...what was the point of him knowing about OFA if he was just going to be a disrespectful ass?

I have no idea why it was necessary for him to know, tbh. I think it was a waste of an opportunity to give him growth by NOT telling him. And honestly, I agree that k*tsuki and the plf have similar ideals because they’re elitists. :/ They think they’re better than others. Unironically, the lov wanting k*tsuki on their side would have been like, them all sharing this same thought. Idk, I just don’t like him. The things he says and does are played off as comedic relief now and it’s honestly so annoying. He needs to be brought down from his pedestal.

It’s so long overdue and now things are played as comedic relief like him hurting Izuku with his spike and also being extremely disrespectful during the ofa meetings. Thank you, I’m glad to hear it. I don’t like that he, a literal bully who has suicide baited Izuku and has hurt him with his explosion quirk, is the fandom’s favorite and the most popular character. Literally any other character would have been better to stan than him. He’s everywhere and I can’t enjoy part of the series because of him always being there. It’s so annoying. I will continue to yell about why he is not a good character until horikoshi gives us the development he desperately needs AND an apology to Izuku for being so abusive to him. hi anon, i started a drawing a long time ago as the answer for this but it will take me a while to finish yet (i liked it so i’m extra nervous about it lol) but i just figured I’d write about them a little?

compared to other ships i have tododeku isn't like, my endgame all the time and honestly compared to other characters i think i have a lot of trouble characterizing izuku and shoto in a way i’m completely happy with but in the context of this pro hero/next gen au i am SO incredibly soft for shoto okay

they are married and have toshi in like their mid 20s, which seems very young to me but also they are fully In a Life Threatening Career right out of high school so i figured it wasn’t too off base to skew it that way. If you start your career seriously at 18/19 you’re probably feeling decently established at 25 (& i feel like heroes either do stuff mad young or completely put it off until they’re way older....)

izk and sho are off an on and off again for a long time, and its weird because even when they're not dating they are still constantly working together and hanging out and the media loveeees it eats it up but really its like. every time they break up its because things are Too Fast for izk like todoroki fully wants to marry him and izuku is all up in his own head about living up to all might (as if he doesn’t KNOW that all might already did the ‘self-sabotage all his relationships by keeping the ofa secret’ thing)

todoroki strikes me as the type that like. Once he knows he Knows. It’s Izuku for him. he wants to get married, he wants a family.

So he just says it. He wants to get married. He wants - a kid.

Midoriya, of course, freaks out. How would they even raise a kid with their careers anyway? Is what he lands on. Todoroki is just like. I will stay home then.

Like its so easy! to just give that up! like it isn’t even a question worth considering, or he’s already considered it?

He is distraught at the idea of todo retiring early, or even taking off work to raise a kid. He is at his heart still a fanboy. The life they live was an impossible dream for him for so long, he forgets that for shoto it was different. For shoto it was an inevitability. A constant. He could rebel from the type of hero his father wanted him to be but he was always going to be a hero.

They want different things. They need space

Of course eventually izuku realizes he’s being an idiot but also. Really thinks about shoto and his family and what it is he is asking izuku for

He is asking him to be his chance at an impossible dream.

and what kind of a hero was he to say no?

(He comes to this conclusion having a heart to heart w bkg because katsuki is sick of watching him torture himself like a moron)

(Bkg: did you really just compare accepting a marriage proposal from a man clearly out of your league to all might giving you One for All because wow)

I just think a lot about todoroki and how. there was never an option other than being a hero. his choices were be a hero because his father said so, or find a way to make it his own. and did he even consider the idea that he could want anything else?

He takes the time off to raise their little girl. he works on a comic. he paints. he is happy.

In the end i think sho converts mainly to doing rescue work with uraraka, and because rescue heroes don’t get the same number of arrests, no matter how popular he is he will never be the #1 ranked hero. He gets to do good work and help people without ever having to worry about his fathers goals and ambitions for him. He finds his own place as a hero.

He decides that he is going to surpass his father’s greatest failure - not bu surpassing all might. By being a good dad.

(he is an incredibly indulgent parent he wants her to have absolutely anything and raises a right brat because of it lmaoo but. it’s good)

BNHA Rewatch: Season 1 Episode 8 “Bakugou’s Start Line”

And the BTA concludes!

So we start with Bakugou’s little meltdown/anxiety attack. I actually remembered this scene the last time I had an anxiety attack over something school-related; it was the first time I actually started to kinda relate to Bakugou a little. Like, I feel ya, man. (I wish I had a cute childhood friend to make me feel better post anxiety. You lucky bastard).

Holy crap he’s small. (looks at wiki) Is that really the difference between 7′2 and 5′7? Somehow it feels bigger. (Maybe it’s just symbolism for how small BKG feels?). Also, one of my favorite reviewers nicknamed him “Baekugou” during his more sympathetic moments. I’m going to borrow that one.

And introducing...my third favorite character, after Deku and Kacchan! The one, the only, Momo Yaoyorozu! I think I loved this character from this scene onward. She’s another one who reminds me of me. “Let me present my long analytical thesis on everything these characters did wrong.” She’s bang on, too; I love it when this series acknowledges its heroes’ flaws. Also Todoroki with that sideeye. is this when you fell in love, Shoto?

Speaking of...

Todoroki’s main strengths and flaws are pretty evident here. This is OG Shoto, all ice/cool and no heat/warmth Shoto, who refuses to work with other people and tries to do everything himself. (Though he was still considerate enough to recognize Momo and vote for her. OTP). Poor Ojiro and Tooru, they never had a shot. My basic opinion on Todoroki is: I love him. Definitely top 10, maybe top 5. I mean, nobody dislikes him, really.

Smash has comedic takes on how all the other characters did. i have no real guess myself. My guess is that most of the Villain teams seem really underpowered compared to the Hero Teams; no offense to Kiri, but the only one I see potentially winning is Momo’s. Though Mineta’s also on her team, so not that great a shot.

All Might provides us with more Bakugou meta. This series loves to write meta about it’s own characters (and I love it!)

After a flashback added to pad the episode out, we return to Class A. Here comes Kirishima to fanboy about Deku! I so think he has sort of a thing for him. (I ship Kiri/Mina mainly, but hey, Mina and Deku both have fluffy hair, energetic personalities and kind-hearts. He can have a type!)

This whole sequence is adorable and characterizes Class A a bit (why does Mina admire Deku’s dodging so much, specifically? Is there any given reason for that?) One of my favorite bits, though, is this weird sequence where Kaminari hits on Uraraka, who blows him off to worry about Deku, who then blows her off to worry about Kacchan. Subtext, what’s that?

Speaking of....

BKDK Corner (basically the whole end of the ep)

Bakugou is honest. He may not like it, but Deku beat him. Fair and square, with his big hero brain and hard work. I like that.

This pivotal moment! Deku, for very little reason at all, marches right up to Kacchan and tells him his Secret ID. One of my favorite BKDK moments, because one) Deku trusts Kacchan here, more than anyone else, and it actually pays off because Kacchan doesn’t blab. Two) Deku says this to make him feel better. 3) Deku renews their rival vows. 4) Deku cares what Kacchan thinks and feels guilty about ‘tricking’ him. 5) Until Deku tells someone else about OFA, I can’t ship him with anyone but Kacchan. Because that’s such a fundamental part of who Midoriya is, along with growing up quirkless and looking up to All Might. I mean, no offense to Izuocha, Tododeku or other Deku shippers, it’s just...he only told one person, and that person is Kacchan. He has shown no interest in telling his Official! Love Interest, Uraraka, and she has no idea; Todoroki guessed but was far off the mark. (And figuring it out isn’t as powerful as Deku telling them, anyway. )

And now Bakugou’s rebuttal. A lot of his behavior makes more sense if you realize that until Episode 49 he thought Deku’d lied to him their whole lives. He didn’t believe him here, so he goes on thinking that Deku didn’t tell him about his quirk just to eff with him for a decade. His behavior is very different after Episode 49, and that’s probably why. Anyway, someone needs a hug! The Kacchan side of the “OFA confession” coin, then, is crying. Until Kacchan cries and pours his heart out like this to Kiri/Shoto/Ochaco/Jiro/whoever, I don’t ship him with anyone but Deku either. I need him with someone he feels comfortable crying around. And so far only one person fits that bill. (BTW, out of that list? The one I could actually see him crying in front of the most is Shoto. Maybe some day).

All Might tries hilariously to comfort Bakugou and fails. I feel him. Trying to make people feel better isn’t my strong suit. Deku is apparently great at it tho.

This isn’t in the manga, BTW. They added it for the anime. Not sure what the point of it is, everyone already knows they’re rivals. Just to tell you Ochaco ships it? (maybe she wants a threesome. If I didn’t ship her with Iida, that’d be fine by me).

To quote from one of my favorite BNHA meta writers on this bit, Ryokure: “On this point I’m like 80% sure that Mineta’s existence, Yaoyorozu‘s stupid costume (come on, she’s fifteen! it’s too early to be objectified!), etc are there so people wouldn’t think that this is shounen-ai.”

In short, I love this episode! It may be just a quick wrapup ep, but it’s so full of good stuff. Momo! Todoroki! Class A fighting each other! Sad tears and angst. BKDK galore. It’s a real treat of an episode.

oooh boy this is gonna be a Ramble(TM)

Canon vs Fanon on Midoriya: The thing about Midoriya is that, apparently, only 1% of people uhhhh Actually Get Him. Okay, that might be a bit of an exaggeration, but still; for the most part, both Canon and Fanon are,,, HHHHH not right??? Canon, specifically because of the way he interacts with Bkg and the name D3ku. The way he deals with that in canon is... not accurate. Plus, while it’s not really about characterization, it bugs me that the narrative pushes him more towards self sacrifice instead of learning that he has to value and take care of himself too, even if he wants to save everyone. By not getting to the root of the problem (self worth issues) it harms Midoriya’s growth. As for FANON. Fanon Midoriya has two modes; “Madlad Mc’Breaky My Bones” or “I am just overanxious babey” and yes he does have those as part of his personality but that’s not ALL that there is. I feel like most people in general just Do Not Understand Him on a deeper level. Like, YES, he’s the protagonist, but somehow nobody actually gets him. (To the point where they have him as friends with (and worse, ship him with) Bkg)

Canon vs Fanon on Bakugou: Yeah no there’s not really a winner here either (ooh I’m about to piss off a lot of bakustans, if you don’t like antibaku just skip this part actually). Canon Bakugou... has no depth. Hardly any at all. He’s a bully, and he has an inferiority complex, and then he’s never actually given any real growth. There are “oh he’s CHANGED!!” hand wavey moments but he never actually changes and just acts the same as he always did before. (There is the part in the manga where he jumps in to save Jirou, but come on, helping your teammates who are working with you so that you can win is literally the lowest bar out there, and right afterwards when the fight is over he threatens Midoriya to explain his new quirk, so, no, he didn’t actually change). FANON Bakugou... has the exact opposite problem that Fanon Midoriya has. Fans have built up Bakugou’s character basically from the ground up and made him way more deep than he... actually is. It’s impressive, and I guess that I respect it on some level, but like. At the end of the day, Bakugou bullied Midoriya in canon for ten whole ass years. No One Ever Seems To Take That Seriously, and they Immediately Hand Wave It Off Right After You Bring It Up. Like. People really are out here dedicating more time to the main character’s bully than the main character. Even if you relate to him based on the way he acts, or the way his home life is, there are MANY OTHER CHARACTERS out there that you could stan instead that didn’t bully someone else for ten years, just saying

Canon vs Fanon on Kirishima: Canon Kirishima, I like and don’t have problems with. He has a solid character, and while I don’t know all the details I know he has some good backstory and character development coming up in the next anime arc. Overall he’s just a very good rowdy boy. FANON KIRISHIMA... Most people do him right, but, like. I feel like people Way Over Exaggerate His Dedication To Bakugou. Like yes, of course, they’re good friends, he’s probably the one person that Bakugou respects, but y’all make EVERYTHING about Bakugou. 9 out of every 10 posts with Kirishima have Bakugou in there too. There’s constant jokes about “oh I am just a Big Gay in love with Bakugou” (I mean, it’s true, but like with Midoriya fanon, at a certain point it becomes ooc to exaggerate Just One Trait About A Character). And, to even some extent, some people (not everyone but some) make him Less Rowdy and More Soft UwU because Bakugou is “supposed to be the rowdy one” and that’s,,,,,, just really awkward for Kirishima as a character. idk, it’s like, with Fanon, most people won’t let Kirishima be a Standalone Character

That’s about off the top of my head what I think (I might have come up with more if I let this sit here for a while to think, but meh)

Would I recommend Defender of the Universe? Depends on the person.

For some people, yes, I would recommend Defender of the Universe. I especially recommend DotU for people who can appreciate 1980s shows for what they are, are interested in Voltron’s origins, and wish to expand their lore knowledge for the franchise.

Characters are lovable and compelling. My favorites are Keith, Pidge, and especially Lance. Don’t expect them to be their VLD counterparts, though - there are some elements in common (ex: Lance flirting with Allura) but also notable differences (ex: Lance being hot-headed, semi-cynical, and sometimes assholish). I think characters are the biggest highlight of DotU.

Plot isn’t exemplary. I don’t watch this show for plot. But I do find myself watching every episode curiously to catch VLD Easter Eggs. The more you know about DotU and Beast King GoLion, the more you can enjoy those scenes in the latest reboot. For instance, characters/locations in BKG were often renamed for DotU... but both names appear in VLD! Emperor Daibazaal became King Zarkon, Prince Sincline became Prince Lotor, the planet Altea became Arus, Honerva became Haggar, and, of course, Ryou and Takashi Shirogane became Sven Holgersson. It’s really fun to pick up on small Easter Eggs down to Allura having the mice kiss one of the Paladins!

So here’s what I say about recommendations:

If you want to know all about the past of Voltron and are happy watching tons of material, watch Defender of the Universe THEN Beast King GoLion. Although BKG was created first and the Americans heavily edited it (and other shows) into DotU, watching the American version first... 1). allows you to understand the Voltron franchise phenomenon from the foundation, as this is where the rest of Voltron was based from and continued to expand. BKG was not what started the reiterations of Voltron; DotU is the popular/influential “starting point” of the franchise. 2). gives you more material. DotU actually incorporates several anime shows together. So if you only watch BKG, you miss important things like Pidge’s twin brother, Chip, given as Chip was not a part of BKG. 3). is less painful than going the other direction from Japanese --> American versions. Watching the Japanese original first can make the USA version awkward... as you are then overtly aware of the USA’s less-than-stellar censorship, scene splicing, and awkwardly changed dialogue.

If you want to watch a show to understand the past iterations of Voltron, watch Defender of the Universe. The American version of the show is where you’re going to get the main bulk of what Voltron has become.

If you want to watch a show that has better story, logic, production, intrigue, action, and maturity, watch Beast King GoLion. It’s the unedited, uncensored original that the story was intended to be Back In The Day. By that, I mean actual character deaths, gore, swearing, and more exciting, higher stakes. Not going to lie, the dialogue is hugely better in BKG than DotU.

But I would not recommend Defender of the Universe, Beast King GoLion, or one of the other starting anime shows to people who get put off by outdated shows or people who are only interested in watching Really Great Shows. Yes, DotU has a lot of love, respect, and nostalgia for people who grew up watching it, but it hasn’t aged well, and frankly there are lots of corny, sexist, or weird parts to it. And, again, it’s not that great in the plot category.

For you specifically @thefuriousnightfury, no, I can’t see you enjoying it. I imagine you wouldn’t have the patience for its outdatedness and very episodic, repetitious nature. Not many episodes develop plot. Most episodes are basically Zarkon/Lotor/Haggar sends a robeast to Arus and Voltron fights it.

So personally, I really enjoy reading the old comics and watching the old shows. But they’re not going to be for everybody!

If anyone’s curious about how different DotU and BKG are at any one scene, I’ve transcribed parallel moments from one part in the first episode (keeping character names the same to make it easier to follow). Yes, I swear, these are the same scene!!!

Beast King GoLion (Japanese original, English subs)

Hunk: Damned vulture, it’s waiting for the flesh to rot off our bones. Pidge: Don’t you toy with us! Get lost! Shiro: Not too bad, Shorty. Pidge: The Deathblack Beastmen are chowing down on slave stew. Hunk: Are we just gonna sit here and wait to be turned into those things? Dammit! Lance: You must be joking. I’d rather not have to eat slave stew. Keith: But if we resist Daibazaal, we’ll be killed. Shiro: We’ll break out. Lance: Say what? Shiro: The only way we’ll survive is by getting out of here. Lance: We’ll need a spaceship to get away from the Galra Empire. Keith: We can steal a slave ship. I took a look when I was outside for hard labor, and they don’t keep too close an eye on the hangar. Hunk: But before we leave, I’d like to get my hands on Zarkon. Lance: We’re in a pretty tight spot, but we’ve gotten out of worse before. Keith: Right! We’ll really have to use our wits to get out of this trap. Sven: I’m thinking. Lance: Me, too. Sven: When the guards come to take us to the arena, we’ll rush them! Lance: Real clever, Sven. Oughta be good for a million laughs! Keith: We could all use a laugh right now. We’ve got to use our heads! We can’t panic. We’ll find a way outta here. Hear anything, Hunk? Hunk: Quiet.
