(warning: literary analysis ahead) i know i'm not the first person by far to say this, but there are so many similarities between kaz and wylan in six of crows and ESPECIALLY crooked kingdom.

there's obviously the big one of both of them having a re-birth type experience in the harbor, but that's not where the similarity stops. during my ck reread, i noticed that the reason kaz and wylan are in the harbor in the first place is because a father-like figure.

pekka rollins was a father-like figure to both kaz and jordie, and the book says this. the rietveld boys had just lost their father, and one of the big reasons pekka was able to scam jordie and kaz so well is because he provided them with a comforting and parental like space. kaz ofc eventually ends up in the harbor, and it can all be traced back to pekka rollins.

wylan has his rebirth in the harbor due to his father. the connection is more direct with his, but even then there are middle men and other things involved. but again, it can all be traced back to his father.

going off this thought, they both lost a close family member due to a father figure.

another big similarity i found that i feel like i haven't seen anyone talk about his what kaz and wylan are both motivated by: revenge.

wylan does not start off the books being motivated by revenge. he ends up in the barrel and with the crows out of a desperation to both hide from his father and because he genuinely has no where else to go. later on in ck, after wylan finds his mother at saint hilde, the book very clearly states that his motivation changes. at the begining of chapter 31, there's a scene where wylan is staring at himself in the mirror. there are lines that say, "What am I doing here? But he knew the answer. Only he could see his father punished for what he'd done. Only he could see his mother freed." which drives me INSANE!! because it's a DIRECT PARELLEL to things kaz says/feels about jordie!! in the chapter right before that (30) there's a line that says, "He'd found his way to shore, devoted himself to the vengeance he and his brother were owed." (there are other and better lines that reference wylan's "only he could *take revenge*" line, but this is just the closest one that comes to mind)

there are differences between their motives—you could say that kaz's revenge motive is more direct and violent—but there's also the fact that we see both kaz and wylan get their revenge in the book.

both kaz and wylan want revenge for one of their family members, and themselves, from what a father figure in their life has done.

they've also both been kidnapped by jan/held in captivity by him. i know this happens to inej too, but i think it's important that one of the first scenes we see with kaz is him negotiating with jan after being captured by him, and then towards the very end of the series, we (very simplified and on the surface) see the same thing happening to wylan. i know the two jan captivity scenes with kaz and wylan are very different, but i think the basic similarity of these scenes really attest to how far wylan has come and how much he's been assimilated into the crows.

there's also of course the part where wylan's expression is said to be something that looks kaz-like, which i feel also shows how far he's come and how he's truely developed into a crow.

in conclusion, as others have said, they truely are two sides of the same coin. they're so different but so alike, and i absolutely love how leigh bardugo was able to directly juxstapose wylan and kaz when they're so different on the surface.

hii lovely 💗 omg i am MORE than happy to tell the story of mr snarl! make yourself a cup of tea, sit back and relax, and let’s get started:

as you might already know, “mr snarl” is the nickname that’s usually used to describe alex’s persona during the am era. allow me to provide some prime examples of mr snarl:

basically, mr snarl is characterised by the slicked-back, cool, arrogant charisma that was typical of alex’s performances during the am era. he’s not friendly or approachable, he’s deadpan and snarky and all edges, and is generally seen in sunglasses and black leather.

a great example of mr snarl in action alex’s 2013 brit awards speech:

my favourite thing about the story of “mr snarl” though is that the name originated from alex himself. in an interview from 2022, he discussed his old stage personas:

he has a name for his performer ego, which has always snarled and sang with the corner of his mouth turned up in disdain: mr snarl. “sometimes mr snarl shows up,” turner explains. “we’ve just been rehearsing some old songs for the upcoming shows and it’s weird what feels right and what feels contrived when there’s five of us in the rehearsal room. it feels completely insane to embody this guy singing to a carpeted room. there i stand, singing at the carpet and wondering how do you sing a damn song like ‘teddy picker’?”

what’s interesting to me is that obviously ‘teddy picker’ was written way before the am era, so maybe alex’s idea of mr snarl includes the eras before am too - or maybe he was thinking of how he performed it during the am era. either way, as far as i’m aware, everyone in fan spaces like tumblr seems to solely use “mr snarl” to refer to alex’s persona during the am era (anyone reading this who has a different view, please feel free to jump in and correct me!)

mr snarl might be all cheekbones and snark, but underneath it all our favourite little deer-eyed dreamer was never far away - especially if miles kane was present!

I really wish we got more of shirley and abed’s relationship. abed finally having a consistent mother-like figure in his life has so much storywriting and character building potential (and it’s also just really important to me lmao), plus shirley being able to connect with aspects of life she’s historically been pretty far removed from (other religions/cultural practices, pop culture, just general neurodivergency etc) is so good for her character, and it exposes sides of her we don’t see too often.

we get bits of their dynamic in basic genealogy, messianic myths and ancient peoples, and introduction to teaching, but that’s basically it I think. they’re just really important to me and I wish the writers had explored their relationship a bit more

For Christmas one year, Gray recreated Lucy's keys in ice and made them into ornaments (Lucy nearly cried. Especially when she saw the Aquarius one (this was before she got the key back))

Lucy taught Gray how to slow dance. He's normally a good dancer but something about slow dancing trips him up

No one is safe from their judgement. Loke trips walking into the guild? Gray and Lucy are whispering and pointing. Natsu can't even breathe without them bullying him

Gray tends to keep an eye on Lucy at parties and stuff because he knows men tend to get grabby with her. He also knows she can take care of herself, but if Gray can freeze the guy to the floor without causing a scene, he's gonna.

Something about Lucy activates Gray's mom tendencies. He's always patching her injuries, making sure she ate, etc

Lucy tries to do it back but Gray would rather die than take care of himself. Lucy assures him that if he keeps it up, she will kill him

Unfortunately threatening to kill Gray usually ends in him getting excited and going "promise?!?". Lucy then threatens to snitch to Natsu and Gray takes it back (this is a very common conversation between the two)

Dearest Miasma, I'm sure I can conjure up some thoughts (I am plagued with thoughts). 650ish words of Aether/Sunshine musings. Not quite ficlet, definitely not just headcanons. Some angst (of the missing their packmates variety). More smut. They just love each other a lot ok!? Transfem Sunny because I said so.

With the rest of the pack gone, the ghoul wing is eerie. Sunshine's never seen it like this. Impossibly quiet. So many doors shut, rooms sealed off. Sure if she wanted to she could open Cirrus' door, slip in. Bury her face in the the blankets and pillows and clothes left behind. She could sleep in a different empty bed every night. Drift off to the smell of her missing packmates. She doesn't though, doesn't have to. Aether's with her. Noise carries differently when they're the only two in this part of the Abbey. Like a room with all the furniture moved out. The television drones, and she can hear it down the hall. Distant mumbling. When Aether's in his room, playing guitar, humming a tune she can hear him like he's next to her. They spend a lot of time together. Neither of them talk about it, but the emptiness of their home has seeped into the chambers of their hearts too. Bittersweet and aching with each video call where Cumulus pans the phone around so Sunshine can see the Eifle Tower lit up against the sky. Or when she can hear Aether and Dew talking through the walls. Dew's voice terse as he complains about everything except what's really bothering him. Sunshine slips into Aether's room once she's sure he's off the phone. Once they've both exchanged their good nights with their pack, halfway across the world. Sometimes they talk. Curled up together on Aether's big bed. TV on some show they've seen a hundred times. Voices hushed like there is someone they might wake up. Sometimes, Aether pulls her close. Kisses the breath from her lungs. Hands sunk into her curls as he holds her where he needs her. Thumbs pressed against the base of her horns, tongue sweeping over her teeth. She's glad it's Aether. Has been since they both announced their retirement independently of each other. Grateful not to be alone and glad it's him. Steady, devoted, Aether. Who only has to look at her to understand. Who will sit with her at the piano in their empty rehersal room and sing. Who lets her tag along on his infirmary shifts when she can't sleep. Aether who has good book reccomendations and makes sure Sunshine never gets bored enough to really feel how much she misses everyone else.

Aether, who knows exactly how to touch her to shut her mind off. Who holds her with confidence, knows she won't break as he presses her down into the mattress. Slips one hand into the waistband of her leggings and another up, under he crop top to cup a small breast in his giant hand. calloused fingers dragging over a pebbling nipple. Aether feels like home when he touches her. Even when it's rough and desperate. Even when he has both of their cocks in his fist, dragging the heads together, making her vision fuzzy at the edges. Even when he's three fingers deep inside of her, scissoring her open, pressing against spots that make her feel like she's going to cave in on herself.

jed proposed. they were in the garden one evening smoking and jed was just like ‘uh can i please marry you’ and that was it. and yes octavius cried A Lot but don’t tell anyone

jed’s family and the people around him were all pretty traditional about marriage and had really good and loving relationships so as soon as jed realised he loved octavius he could not even look at him without being like ‘i need to put a fucking ring on that man. i need to wife him up right fucking now’ so the question had been in his mind for a very long time. octavius on the other hand is low key scarred for life by his first marriage and has never witnessed a positive or healthy marriage in his life so he never thought about it At All until jed asked him and he was completely caught off guard by it. but he really didn’t even have to think about it before he said yes

jed has always known that he would never want a ‘proper’ traditional wedding, and after the engagement he started to think about it more and more and got super freaked out by the idea of all the fuss and noise and attention that usually comes with a wedding. but he felt like octavius would want everything to be big and fancy and expensive and he was so nervous to tell octavius that he really didn’t want any of that. and one day jed pulls octavius to the side and is like ‘i’m really sorry please don’t hate me but i don’t think i want a wedding’ and INSTANTLY octavius is like ‘omg me neither but i was too scared to tell you’ so they end up doing everything really private and low key as possible. the closest thing they get to any kind of celebration at all is a tiny little party with their friends at their house afterwards. plus they both take a week off work that they spend entirely at home just being domestic and going ‘yay :D we r married :D’ because they can’t get over it

octavius is very happy about how low key everything was but as SOON as he gets back to work literally everyone notices he has a ring on and he has to shut down SO many awful ‘who’s the lucky lady’ questions it drives him insane. attila is the only one that talks to jed enough to notice that the ring he’s wearing matches octavius’ exactly but he doesn’t say anything

jed finds literally every excuse whenever he can to call octavius his husband because he’s still so excited about it even years after they actually get married. octavius comes in after work and jed is like ‘hello my lovely husband who i am married to. what does my beautiful sexy husband want for dinner’ when they go out to a bar jed is sitting with his friends whilst octavius is ordering drinks and jed’s like ‘that guy over there. that’s my husband’ and everyone’s like ‘we know. we were at your wedding party’ but they let him have his fun anyway

jed wants octavius to meet his sisters before they get married (again. he’s very traditional) so octavius pays for jed’s sisters to fly over and stay with them and they fully obsess over octavius for a full week. and then jed tells them on the last day that he’s getting married and his sisters FREAK OUT (octavius gets swamped in hugs upon the revelation like. possibly even more so than jed does)

on their first wedding anniversary jed gets a tattoo of octavius’ birthday in roman numerals on his wrist (and yes octavius cries about it. are you noticing a pattern here). a few years after that jed gets octavius’ initials tattooed on his chest (right over his heart. octavius cries)

Venom!Hobie Cat-Symbiote AU!

Okay so I might have made an AU of my AU...

It's based on my Venom!Hobie au but with a slightly (?) lighter tone in the sense that Hobie actually gets along well with his symbiote. Though they initially mostly get along due to shared mutural trauma... (But more about that later)

This version of the symbiote is more animalistic and usually communicates with Hobie through emotions- sorta projecting its own emotions and feelings towards him to let him know how it feels about something, though it might also communicate via single words or short sentences but that's pretty rare.

So, I'll do like I did in my original Venom!Hobie post and focus on the Design first:

Since they get along the symbiote feels safe around Hobie and thus it'll often "extend" itself outside of him and take the shape of a (freaky looking) cat - Kinda like how VENOM is able to partially seperate itself from Eddie while still being tethered to him:

(I didn't draw the symbiote goo that would extend from it to tether it to Hobie but it's there I swear!)

Since this is Spider-Punk's symbiote I wanted some of the spikes to carry over in this design

I haven't quite decided if it should have the "running-mascara" look (buttom drawing) for its eyes like Spider-Punk's mask has or not so lemme know what you guys think?

The spikes are used as a way for it to communicate to others as a way to make its body language more expressive (though it only shows itself around people it really trusts so it rarely uses them as it still just communicates its emotions directly to Hobie when it needs to)

And like with Venom!Hobie the spikes are reminiscent of symbiote teeth

When it's relaxed/happy the spikes will be pressed down towards its body - making it easy to pet- if somebody would dare approach it that is

Hobie pets it a lot as it usually sits on his shoulder when he walks around (when there's nobody around that is)

The symbiote is still made of the same goo as regular symbiotes so it does not feel like petting a cat at all- Hobie doesn't mind but most other people find it rather unpleasant to touch

The "fuzzy" look is just the symbiote goo trying to imitate cat fur

The reason the symbiote takes this form is partially because it's more animalistic and likes physical affection (from people it trusts, it will bite your hand off if it doesn't like/trust you and you try to pet it) and partially because Hobie is a cat person and it used it as a method to make Hobie like it more when they first "met" + petting it helped Hobie calm down and still does

It's gotten pretty good at mimicking cat noises including purring

It'll usually stay on Hobie's shoulder or sit in his lap like this, it's still tethered to him so it can't go that far without him - not that it really wants to anyways

If it likes someone it'll rub itself against their legs and mimic purring noises

Okay now we move on to the

Origin:

This is my current headcanon for this AU but as always feel free to share your thoughts/ideas/inputs if you have any <3

Hobie and the symbiote "met" at one of Oscorp's labs

Hobie was living as a homeless teen (13-14 years old having escaped an abusive household a few months prior) and was captured by Oscorp to be used for their symbiote experimentations

Hobie was an easy target as he had just been bitten by the radioactive spider a few hours prior and thus he was starting to suffer from the fever the bite gave him

Hobie was to be fused with a new kind of symbiote

The symbiote had been made to make people more susceptible to orders- making them less inclined to think for themselves

But in order to make that possible the symbiote had been put through some rather painful and extreme experiments- making it more "dead" than alive at this point

When it's fused with Hobie, who's still very sick at this point, the spider bite is still working its magic on Hobie's body and thus it also partially heals the symbiote

Both Hobie and the symbiote are terrified of their situation as they're put in holding cells made specifically for symbiotes.- Their only comfort is each other.

The symbiote takes on the cat like appearance to soothe Hobie after being subjects to a particularly bad experiment

Since Hobie's gotten powers from both the spider bite and the symbiote they quickly become the subjects for many inhumane and painful experiments as the scientists futilely try to figure out how to replicate the symbiote (as they're unaware of the spider bite, thinking the symbiote alone is behind Hobie's new powers)

Due to the symbiote Hobie develops a taste for human flesh

And he gets his first taste of it as he manages to escape the lab during one of their many tests- killing as many guards and scientists on their way out as possible. (This is also the first time they fully transform into Venom!Hobie)

He would later return and burn the lab down completely.

As a result of their treatment at the lab + Hobie's past with his abusive family, both him and the symbiote have developed a deep distrust to other people.

Which is also why Hobie isn't trying to get rid of the symbiote, he considers it his only friend for a long time.

Hobie still loves playing music (which is also how he eventually makes new friends) but has had to make some adjustments due to the symbiote, thus he usually uses both earplugs and noise cancelling earmuffs when he's playing and even then he still gets migraines if he plays for too long or too loud

He still craves human flesh and will usually target cops or anyone associated with Oscorp to sate his hunger.

He doesn't feel bad about killing but will still try not to harm civilians (emphasis on try- sometimes the hunger gets the best of him)

He still operates as Spider-Punk but for a long time he's mostly fueled by his hatred for Oscorp and how they treated him and the symbiote

But as he slowly learns to open up to people he starts to shift his focus onto figting to help people and make the city safer (which means he'll still target cops and Oscorp employees but that's not his only focus anymore) (he also makes an effort to actually save civilians at this point)

Though due to the symbiote and their past this version of Spider-Punk is more prone to just straight up killing his villains (+ he still gotta eat right?)

But I'd like to imagine that this version of Hobie also finds his own community who help him out and accept both him and the symbiote

Giving them kind of a "happy" ending despite this version of Hobie being more messed up and unhinged...

Once again this turned out way longer than I intended lol (I just can't shut up about Venom!Hobie, the brainrot is real!)
