please tell us how dess would approach kris’ species dysphoria & how she would teach him to deal with it. if she doesn’t just laugh awkwardly abt it and try to ignore it

actually!!! this is the one thing dess has going for her lol, i like to joke that in this au by losing their identity issues kris instead gains mommy issues. but basically, the big thing that even LEADS kris to all their identity issues in the first place is that when theyre like ten they find a book on humans in the library and realize them being a monster is a Lie, and around this time azzy is leaving for college, their parents are divorcing, dess has just gone missing, they're cutting themself off from noelle, and its this perfect storm for everything to go to absolute shit for kris. they lose their monster identity, everyone around them is trying to comfort them by saying 'its okay if youre human we still love you' when kris ISNT human and THAT ISNT HELPING, and theyre angry and bitter and a lot of kris's anger comes out as aggression and when cornered/when they feel theyre cornered they tend to lash out, which then bleeds into them realizing that of course they werent ever a monster because monsters are good always and theyre not a good person and coyotes are bad animals and kris isnt good or a monster and they sure as shit arent a human but maybe they can be THIS...etc etc etc. its a shitshow lol, but you know that we've seen how i write kris elsewhere.

BUT IN THIS AU, none of that happens!!! kris is 5 when dess dips with them and thus never actually finds out they're biologically human, or at least, not in the way they do in my canon. unlike asriel (who sees kris calling themself a monster and worries), dess is like 'alright cool' and just updates her mental kris file with 'is a monster' and so she treats and sees them as such.

that isnt to say kris doesnt struggle with species dysphoria, because they do, and they do probably eventually find out their body is biologically human (tho i havent really thought much about how that goes lol). but when this does happen they have chara who supports them, dess who supports them, frisk who supports them...and while they still idealize DESS to an unhealthy degree not being the only human in an all-monster town (+ having a human parent and sibling) means they never actually start idolizing ALL monsters in that unhealthy way.

so, the kris of this au isnt human, and very much feels uncomfortable when they're read as such. but their family (dess, chara, frisk) know them to be a monster. and they're able to model their appearance to appear more monster-like. i dont have a FULL design for kris yet (cause character design is my achilles heel lol) but they for sure wear a pair of antlers (akin to the horn headband, but these are Real Bone Antlers they probably got at an antique store that were modified so its like, feasible for them to wear these pretty much constantly), some sort of modified shoes/boots so it sounds like hoofclicks when they walk, probably other things i havent figured out yet...

its to the point that kris tends to be read as monster more-so than they're read as human! which has implications for when noelle first meets them, of course...but thats for another time.

and for those who might be wondering 'wait but isnt your kris a coyote?' they are! this kris is the same kris who goes on to be a coyote, its just kris's coyote-ness does have a very physiological origin lol. takes a few very specific circumstances for them to go coyote and not monster. but no matter what they are never a human <3

2. This might be the hardest question of all, because all the characters are so richly developed and I genuinely like (almost) all of them! I have a certain soft spot for Yuki and Momiji, of course, as the characters I relate to the most, and a similar soft spot for Ayame and Arisa, because I relate to them in a way as well, though to a lesser degree.

I've been writing a lot of Kyo, Saki, and (weirdly) Hiroshi, so I feel really attached to them right now. I mean, Kyo is a character whose happiness genuinely healed me. Saki's unapologetic weirdness is just the best (and uhhh my friend group in high school had a few people who shared several traits with Saki, so I was bound to like her). And Hiroshi and Yusuke are literally the best part of every scene they're in. (Especially Hiroshi in Cinderella-ish. Seriously, his narration is top tier!)

And Machi and Kakeru have a special place in my heart, too, partly because of their roles in Yuki's development, but also because of the ways I relate to each of them. And, of course, Tohru. I mean, there's so much to say about her, but her deep, deep empathy and the richness of her arc and development are just gorgeous.

I do keep coming back to Yuki and Momiji, though. They're central to two of the scenes that I found most surprisingly powerful; Yuki when he tells Kakeru "that isn't what I want!" and Momiji in his speech to Akito, when he says "a happiness might exist for me!" Outside of the major plot points of the series (which are nearly all centered around Tohru and Kyo), these two moments are, I think, some of the most satisfying developments for any of the characters, period.

3. If we're sticking to named characters, I think Katsuya is the only choice. I know Takaya couldn't develop every single character in the series, but Katsuya is one whose development would have enriched not only him, but Kyoko, Tohru, and Grandpa Honda as well.

I think that the Katsuya-Kyoko relationship can be read as problematic and even predatory exactly as written. It reads as romanticized because it's told from Kyoko's point of view. But Katsuya himself remains kind of an enigma, and it's just really hard to like him when we don't even know what made him think pursuing a middle schooler was okay.

I have several favorite fanworks! Off the top of my head:

Ripples, by @proseprincess

So, canon divergent AUs are probably my favorite type of fic, and I especially love fics where one canon event changes, and everything that follows changes due to something like a butterfly effect. In this two-part series, Tohru never met Kureno in the park, which changes everything that came after in a big way. I love that this tackles some massive changes to canon, yet they all feel grounded in the world and characters we all know. The second installment is incomplete, but still very worth the read IMO, not only because part 1 ends with a massive cliffhanger, but because it's just so inventive and unlike anything else I've read. Maybe my very favorite fanwork.

I'll be Standing There By You, by Eboni_A

This is a beautiful, devastating AU told from Yuki's point of view where he finds out in the final weeks of her life that Tohru has terminal cancer. We see Yuki drop everything to come and support Kyo and be with Tohru in her final weeks, we see Tohru die, and we see Kyo and Yuki (and everyone else) try to keep going afterward. It's heartbreaking yet hopeful, and the author made relatively recent comments about a potential sequel! Fingers crossed!

Inertia, by miss_coverly @lesbian-kyoru

This is another canon divergent AU where Kyo and Tohru become friends with benefits before the curse breaks. It's honestly shocking how beautiful this work is. The prose is gorgeous, the angst is dialed all the way up, the sexual tension is dialed even higher, the characterization is crystal clear, it's honestly a masterclass in POV, the sex is sexy, and I could go on and on. I never thought a blowjob scene would make me cry, yet it did.

The Pursuit of Repeating History, by RiddleAfar @mistergrass

So, when I first started reading fanfiction, I stuck strictly with canon-compliant works. Then, I dipped my toes into canon divergence AUs like those above, but I heavily resisted reading anything with alternative pairings.

Then, I got curious about that one really popular Yuki/Kyo soulmates AU fic, and gave it a read. By the end of the first chapter, I couldn't put it down. And when I was finished reading, I knew I had to check out everything else by that author, which is how I ended up reading The Pursuit of Repeating History.

This story honestly showed me the power of fanfiction. The author legit crafted lore for the Fruits Basket universe. And the "lore" chapters (I think they're referred to as "intermissions") are each beautifully-told stories in their own right. But the author also grappled with how the curse might work, and I think they did an incredible job. I'm actually rereading this beast right now!

We'll Work it Out Together, by inheritanceofgeek @mrsmarymorstan

Okay, I'm a sucker for anything with lots of Hiroshi and Yusuke, and this story is probably the most Hiroshi-and-Yusuke-focused story on Ao3. (Probably worth mentioning the author's sideblog, @2d-iendfrays which is an absolute treasure!) In it, Kyo figures out he's asexual, then figures out he's demisexual, all with the help of his two wholesome buds.

Like almost all the authors on this list, inheritanceofgeek has some other really fantastic works that are worth checking out, from sexual humor to Yuki/Machi smut to a touching piece about new parenthood.

How Can I Thank You, by SharkFairy77

Another brilliant Yuki/Kyo piece, in which Yuki hosts Kakeru and Komaki for dinner (at the apartment he shares with Kyo), and at the last minute, Kakeru asks if Machi can come. (Machi is Yuki's ex in this universe)

The piece starts with dinner prep, and then dinner, and the character writing is just incredibly spot on. I loved the arc of the story through the dinner, and the way Kyo and Machi come to an understanding.

But then, we get into some A+ YukiKyo smut.

I'll Be Here, by Blanche2023 @biancanekoyokai

(Full disclosure - I beta read this work!)

This is a very sweet and sad piece about Kyo's first few days in Kazuma's care after his mother's death. Blanche's characterization is outstanding, and she handles tricky things (like writing a young Akito who's also performing head-of-the-family duties) in a really clever way.

I don't think there's enough pre-canon fic out there, nor enough gen fic, and this piece is just beautiful.

Escaping the future, by Modzy78

I really love the way Modzy78 thinks about the Fruits Basket universe, and her take on the canon-divergence of "what if Tohru never confessed to Kyo" is inventive, suspenseful, fluffy, and just such a fun read! I also really love her other canon divergent AU Cursing the Cursed. And Modzy78 is honestly a superhero for the fandom.

The Talk, by Geoduck @drgeoduck

Honestly, Geoduck has a ton of works you should read, but I'll mention this one because it's probably the funniest thing I've ever read. And then it somehow gets even funnier!

The Ones Who Walk Away From Sohma House, also by Geoduck

If you're a fan of Ursula K. Leguin (my very favorite author!), then you are probably familiar with her famous short story, The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas, and this short fic is an absolute must-read.

Momiji bumps into Ritsu in a gay bar. Not a pairing I ever imagined, but an excellent fic that puts Momiji in the position of "elder queer" to Ritsu. (Honestly, I wish there were more Momiji-as-elder-queer fics!)

You let out a little scream when you suddenly feel Rafe's arms around your waist, lifting you up from the ground. You grasp onto his neck tightly, and just keep on laughing as Rafe runs with you in his arms.

He comes to a stop just before the sand ends and the water starts. He sets you down on the ground, and both of you sit down, the water washing up to your feet occasionally.

It's midnight, the moon is out, the water is rippling softly, and you're sitting next to the person who makes you smile as bright as the stars.

Life can't get more perfect.

↶ೃ✧˚. ❃ ↷ ˊˎ-

"So what, you're just going to leave me now? Whatever we had, it doesn't matter to you anymore?" You yell, tears brimming in your eyes.

"It's not like we were really together you know, you didn't exactly tell people I'm your boyfriend!" Rafe says back, his eyes as teary as yours.

He's right, what you had was more of a situationship. You never labelled him as your boyfriend, heck, you were always confused on what to call him each time you introduced him to people. What you had was too deep to be labelled as 'friendship', but in the back of your mind you were always scared on how things might change if you asked him to be your boyfriend.

"Whatever it may be Rafe! Didn't you feel happy with me? I know I was the happiest with you around." You take a step closer to him, but he takes one back, keeping the distance the same between you two. "You're gonna just leave me because you think me, a pogue, can't date you, a kook? When will we grow past this? Why are you letting a stupid class label decide if you and me should be together or not?"

Tears are now streaming down your face, staining your cheeks as the went down. Your eyes are bloodshot, and your head is pounding with a headache. But you ignore it all. You just want Rafe.

"I'm, I'm sorry," Rafe whispers, as he opens the door of your house and leaves. You want to run after him, stop him from leaving you, but your feet are glued to the ground. Why aren't you moving? Why aren't you on your knees begging him to stay? You hear the engine of his car revving, and from the open door, you see him drive to the horizon.

Since Rafe left you that night, you haven't seen him even once. It's been around two months, and you returned to your regular pogue lifestyle with your best friends: nothing to lose, everything to gain.

The biggest problem you have at hand is to find El Dorado before Singh does. It's been the only thing everyone has been able to talk about, especially after the return of Big John. You've been extremely devoted to this hunt, but every now and then, your mind slips back to you and Rafe.

You aren't sure with whom you can open up about this entire situation with. You've only been digging your emotions deeper and deeper in you, and you're afraid one day you'll just pop with all your pent up emotions.

All of you are sitting around a bonfire, and JJ comes and passes all of you some drinks. You really feel like drinking today, to not feel something and set your heart free for just a while.

But how were you supposed to know that with the alcohol buzzing in your system you will feel every emotion exponentially?

You had downed a number of cups of alcohol, a lot more than everyone else. Everyone except JJ was extremely concerned for you; all JJ did was just peg you on because you don't consume alcohol very often.

"I just miss him so much!" You say, wailing. Alcohol has spread all throughout your body, and you just have this urge to let out every single emotion.

You had popped.

"It's okay," Kiara says, wrapping an arm around your shoulders and trying her best to comfort you.

"It's not Kie!" You remove her arm from you and get up from you position on the sand. You just want him right now, you want him to wrap his arms around you, kiss your forehead and whisper the sweetest nothings in your ears.

"Why do you even miss him so much?" John B says. "He just ruined everything for us. Especially when he stole the cross from Pope. And he left you because he thinks you aren't the right class. Do you not see how messed up this is?"

"Can you stop saying shit about him?" You snap. "I know what he did okay? But I was the one who got to see the vulnerable side of him. The side of him which only cared for the two of us. We could've been something, you know? But this ridiculous treasure hunt of yours just got in the way."

John B starts to get riled up at your words. He knows you wouldn't say half these things if it isn't for the alcohol in your body, but he cannot help but feel angry on how you are blaming him for everything that happened.

"Oh so now it's my fault? Rafe was never supposed to stick his nose in this! The cross is Pope's family history, and it belongs to him. Rafe's just a greedy person who only cares about the money. We wanted to preserve Pope's heritage." John B snaps back at you. Sarah comes in between the two of you, fearing any more traction.

"John B, leave this matter alone okay?" She whispers to him, and tries to get him aside. Sarah looks at you sympathetically, she knows you'll regret everything you've just said when you'll get sober. She now walks up to you.

"We need to get you to bed right now okay?" She tried to look at you in your eyes, but you dodge them. Sarah motions to JJ and Pope towards you, and they both come up, taking one each of your arms and to lead you to your place.

When you three reach your house and JJ lays you down in bed, you feel tears forming in your eyes. "I really miss him J," you sniffle, wiping your tears with the back of your hand. He looks at you with a sorrowful look on his face. JJ hates Rafe's guts, especially after how horribly he treated you, but he hates to see his best friend in this situation even more.

"You'll be fine," he says softly. "You're the strongest person I know, and you'll be okay." You let his words sink in you, as your mind starts to slowly drift off to sleep.

Rafe is nervously pacing around his room, his teeth chewing away on his nails. The anxiety is spreading around like plague in his mind, and he just cannot get to stop thinking about it.

A deal he made with someone to sell some of the melted gold of the cross headed towards a direction he was not expecting. He's tried to think out a way out of this, but nothing seems to be the right solution.

Oh, only if you were there with him. You would softly run your fingers through his head and massage his scalp. "It's all going to be okay," you would mumble to him. And each time you told him that, everything did turn out to be okay. But right now you aren't there with him. And he craves you right now more than anything.

With a sudden impulsiveness, he gets his phone and finds your contact. His finger hovers over your name, does he take the risk of calling you or just forgets about it all?

He knows no one will approve of it. After all, you're a pogue. You have no place with all the kooks with their big mansions and their Maseratis in their backyards. But he longed you, he longed for your touch.

The last thing that Rafe cared about was you being a pogue. It didn't matter to him, all he wanted was you. But everyone else got to his head and made him believe you just don't belong with him.

"Are you sure you want to be with that filthy Pogue? After all, you may end up losing all your money." They would say, referring to how you're only with him because you care about the money he has.

"You don't belong with a pogue, Rafe. Come on man you're better than this." They would say, connecting a string of bad words with your name.

"What would everyone say? Did you even think about your reputation? You are a Cameron for god's sake." They would say, deeming you unworthy.

He shakes the thoughts out of his head. He knows he needs you more than anything else right now. Letting his spontaneity take over, he clicks on your contact.

His heart beats fast as he hears the ringing through the phone. And it almost stops when you pick up.

"Hello?" You say, groggily. You were just taking a nap and getting a call right in between wasn't what you wanted. You didn't even see who called you, you just accepted the call with your eyes almost closed.

"Uh, hey," Rafe says. You immediately sit up in bed. Why is Rafe calling you?

"Rafe?" You say. At this point, Rafe almost feels like melting. He hasn't heard your voice in months, and the sweetness of your voice is something he missed a lot. Everything starts to feel so much to him, and tears start to stream their way down as he sniffles silently.

"Rafe, are you crying? Are you okay?" You're now completely awake, ready to jump off the couch if he wants you there with him.

"Yeah, uh, I'm okay." He says, wiping off his tears. But that's pretty much useless, he just keeps on melting more and more on hearing you. Oh how he missed your voice.

There is a silence between you two, and you can hear each other's soft breathing. You missed him, you missed him a lot. You hated hearing everyone say he's a horrible person; you saw a side of him he never shows anyone. He made you feel so special, and now you feel like digging yourself in a hole, because you wish you weren't so afraid to ask him to be something more when you had the chance.

"I miss you," you blurt, not expecting it to happen. Rafe, on the other end, hears those words with widened eyes.

You miss him? He thought you probably hate his guts for the way he left you.

But you couldn't hate him. How can you hate the only person who made you feel complete?

"I miss you more," Rafe whispers. The tears don't stop, they keep on coming down like two waterfalls. He doesn't want them to stop either. He's finally feeling something. It had been way too long of being numb, not knowing what feeling is striking him.

You have had enough. You get up from your couch and start to make your way out of your house. "Rafe, are you at your home?"

Rafe gets confused on those words. "Yeah, why?"

You get out of your house and close the door behind you.

"I'm coming over."

You reach outside Tannyhill, and take in its view. You haven't seen it in so long, and you'd almost forgotten how big it is. You step up onto the porch, your heart beating very fast. Before you can ring the bell, the door opens and you see Rafe.

The world stops spinning. Rafe has buzzed all his hair off, but when you look in his eyes, all you see is emptiness. They've lost the charm which made you fall for him in the first place.

Rafe looks at you with utter shock. You've gone so pale; all the color is drained from your face. There are eyebags under your eyes, and you look extremely tired.

Without thinking anything, you run into his arms. His gentle touch, his soothing words, his relaxed breathing, all remind you of one thing: home. He's everything home is. His familiar scent immediately calms you down, and you start to sob, which becomes more and more violent with each passing second.

You drop down on your knees with Rafe still holding you. You can't believe you had almost started living a life without him in it. You had almost lost the one person who understood you without you having to say anything.

Rafe finds himself breaking inside on seeing you in this condition. He's the cause of it, if he wouldn't have given into the peer pressure of leaving you so easily, he would never have to see this day.

"I'm so so sorry bubs," he says, hugging you so tightly, his head resting in the crook of your neck. "I'm so very sorry. This happened all because of me."

"Sweets-" you start, but he cuts you off.

"Listen to me first, please." He pleads. "I never intended to do that to you. I hate to say this, but I was pressured to leave you. Everyone put this thought in my head that I don't belong with you solely because you're a pogue. They got to my head. That's the biggest fucking mistake of my life. I don't care you're a pogue. I wanted to make you mine, but before I can do that I left you, ghosted you completely. I'm so sorry, I promise to never leave you again."

You look at him with your red, rheumy eyes. The side which made you fall in love with him; his vulnerable side, is showing again and you are just breaking apart from the inside. Oh, how you missed the way he held you so close to him.

You softly hold his face in your hands and press your lips against his. You trace his lips with yours as you move closer to him, his arms snaked around your waist so tightly; he won't let you go again.

You missed the feeling of his lips on your own, the slight taste of the cigarettes he smokes lying on them. You missed your skin against his, the warmth radiating from his body to yours and making you all fuzzy on the inside.

Rafe will never leave you again. He will kill the one who says you don't deserve to be his, because no one in the world deserves you more than he does.

The Faratok Tree - sorta ep analysis, sorta rambling discussion of themes

Okay, I want to talk about 'The Faratok Tree'. This is one of the more serious eps of the series. Or at least it seemed pretty intense. A lot of this is down to Hilda's intensity - like she's so desperate to get the giants to stay. This is the girl that stopped Trolberg being destroyed, and enabled the peace between Trolls and humans. You'd think she's done enough. But no. It's not even her world. But a part of Hilda seems to understand that if she can get people to not see the giants as monsters now, that this is going to thread through 'history' (this worlds future), and perhaps mean that the humans won't chase the Troll's away when they finally settle Trolberg. That they'll make peace, and the events at the wall, people like Edmond Ahlberg, and Erik, simply won't become what they were.

Maybe she did accomplish that at least.

Woodman as the voice of reason somehow weirdly worked. (I have to admit when I saw a screenshot of Woodman on the flaming wood pile I suspected this was something he had gotten them into and Hilda was saving his arse.). And what I absolutely love the best about this episode, is the theme that changing things takes time. Our actions may not have an effect for a very long time. People aren't just going to change like that. It takes time.

Honestly, whilst this maybe wasn't my fav ep, as there were other episodes I laughed more at... I think this is actually the best episode of the third season. It gets right to the core of who Hilda herself is. This kid, magical part fae or not, is so bloody persisitant the actions she chooses to take are going to ripple throughout time (look at how much Trolberg has changed. Trolls coming to nighttime events? Not posssible without Hilda). Imagine what this child would be capable of as an adult? But one thing's she's going to have to come to realise is that those changes aren't always going to come right away.

I can't really fault it in and of itself. But what I would've loved to see?

That theme of change to have carried through to the rest of the season. 'The Faratok Tree' was a powerful enough ep to set that up and to push it through.

This does also tie in 'damn there should have been more eps' because that's what this would have needed to happen properly. But I would've liked to have seen that theme carry through such as:

Have a marra ep. They've aged up to. How have they changed? Are they better behaved?

More eps with Louise. I really love this kid. Would've liked to see more of her hanging out with the freaky friends, and how this changed thier dynamic.

Safety Patrol. Hell, there should've been a safety patrol ep, with Gerda and Alfur. How are elves and humans interacting now its more official? Also, how are people responding to how Safety Patrol has changed. Gerda's in charge, and the direction is very clearly making contact with the magical creatures and forging alliances. And as bad as Ahlberg was, organisations do not like change. Show safety patrol officers not really wanting to change things and being a pain. Show the public not liking the change and protesting. 'Things were better under Ahlberg!' Show how the city is responding to the changes Hilda enabled through Safety Patrol, because you know they (ie: GERDA) would be driving this.

Victoria Van Gale. This was an arc that actually did get realised, though I would've liked if they'd linked it up to the change takes time theme (and obviously, though Victoria has changed, there are certain things that she cannot change). This might have worked good as its own episode, rather than tied up in the rest of the finale. (I frikkin love her but she does kinda steal the show as things played out).

And yeah, you know I was coming to it, but if you're going to have the season theme change taking time you absolutely cannot leave out Erik Ahlberg. I know he's a pain in the arse, and not a nice person, but the movie handled him really well. And one thing that got across was this man scared the absolute shit out of himself enough that he has plenty of motive change. But he's going to have to practically change his personality, and that's not going to happen in the the year (2 years?) between the movie and the last season. Have Hilda run into him in an ep, and having him trying and doing an absolutely terrible job of it. He's still much the same guy, but he has changed enough that instead of being destructive to those around him, he's beating himself up everytime he fails. Have Hilda tell him it's okay, change takes time, he's still accomplishing something even if it doesn't feel like anythings changed.

And, finally, that theme should be linked the the series final. Hilda ends up in a world where things are 'perfect' but they also don't change. And no change means no growth. I've got to be honest (and I know there probably weren't enough eps for this) but I would've put Victoria's arc in another episode. Which probably would have meant Astrid had to sacrifice herself... but... well... that would actually have worked and sometimes change does suck. Pretty much the Faratok Tree's themes would have tied really well to the series final - they just weren't quite connected as well as it could've been.

Meladee: Father-Daughter Talk

I feel like I'm always talking about how close Mel is with Dedede. But what about her other dad? How does Meta Knight spend time with her?

Meta Knight is not just a father to Mel, but a mentor, just like he is to Kirby. He'll take her to all sorts of places around Dream Land every now and then to have some one-on-one time with her, usually early in the morning, when the two can catch the sunrise.

They'd sit for about an hour, maybe even two. They'd meditate, or Meta Knight would tell her stories about his past adventures (Note: Meladee wouldn't be born until during the events of Triple Deluxe while Dedede was kidnapped. I made it this way so that Meta Knight had a reason not to show up in the game, lol).

Once, they sat themselves down on top of Meta's favorite perching spot; on a cliff that stood a little high above their cozy little town.

When Meta Knight told her about how he teamed up with his crew to overthrow Dedede and take over Dream Land, Mel looked at him with the saddest puppy eyes.

She asked, "Why would you do that, Dad?"

"...Because back then, I didn't realize how much of a fool I was for trying to change something that didn't NEED any change," Meta told her. "Dream Land is perfect as it is, Meladee. If I would have been successful in my rampage..."

Here, Meta was holding back tears. "...our lives would be so much different... So much... worse..."

Mel would notice he was crying under the mask. She ALWAYS notices.

"It's ok, Dad..." she reassured him. "That was a long, long, long time ago. We're fine now. You don't have to worry about all that anymore..."

Mel leaned her head into her father and rested it there.

In response, Meta wrapped his wing around her like a blanket.

The two fell asleep shortly after.

Queen Somnia: Love Letters

If there's one holiday the Queen of the Cloud Kingdom adored the most, it was Valentine's Day.

Kracko had always noticed how... fluttery she got during the month of February. Humming to herself, spending extra time in her vanity room dolling herself up, baking sweets. Heck, her hair even started turning from light purple to light pink!

But one thing that stood out to Kracko the most was how Somnia always kept stationery near her bedside for the whole month.

Each night before going to sleep, the Queen would write short, sweet messages on little sheets of paper in her favorite glittery purple pen. She sealed each envelope she put the letters in with a heart sticker and a gentle kiss.

She’d then step out onto her balcony, form a small cloud, place the letter inside, and push the cloud outward into the night sky to travel to its destination: Ripple Star.

- ⭐️ - ⭐️ -

As Queen Ripple went about her daily activities, she’d always be happy to see a small cloud traveling towards her location, for that meant she had a new letter. After opening it and reading it, she’d swoon to herself. She’d read it once more, then again. Later on, she’d write one of her own in response, then assign her loyal fairy, Ribbon, the task of delivering it to the Cloud Kingdom.

Later that evening, Somnia would hear a polite tapping on her balcony door, opening it to come face to face with Ribbon, who handed the letter to the Queen with her heart full of pure happiness.

After exchanging goodbyes with the fairy, Somnia would swoon reading the letter she had received in return.

Her and Ripple would do this for the entirety of February, but it was only on the 14th when they would meet up in person.

…Except this tradition of theirs would soon be cut short.

Following the chandelier incident, Queen Ripple didn’t know what to do with herself the moment Valentines Day came about. It was supposed to be their special day, and they couldn’t even spend it together anymore.

Instead, Ripple spent that day locked in her bedroom, writing and writing and writing letters. She sobbed hard, letting all her tears fall onto the paper as she poured her feelings into each stroke of her pen.

I love you, I miss you, I love you, I miss you…

She wrote it over and over and over on each slip of paper, sealed each one in an envelope, and stuck them in a bouquet of Somnia’s favorite flowers.

At night, Ripple made her way to the roof of her castle and sat down with the flower bouquet, cradling it gently in her arms. She gazed up at the twinkling stars above her, reminded of that special woman whom she would hold in her heart always…

…and forever.

Yet another excerpt from I Survived Kirk, my forthcoming fanfic autobiog from the POV of a bitter redshirt on Kirk's crew

I’m going to step outside the usual retelling of events in a vaguely chronological order here to talk about hypotheticals in a particularly vague manner.  Perhaps I’m just making up bollocks to sell more copies of my book, or maybe I’m dancing around subjects that were deemed “no no” by Starfleet Command.  You decide.

The Vulcan Science Directorate determined that time travel was impossible, centuries ago.  That’s what they claimed, at lest, and what they drilled into generations of Vulcans.  “It’s not possible.  We tried it.  You don’t need to try it, just take or word for it.”

WHAT IF… what if… it were possible?  Some of you might have heard of Zefram Cochrane’s legendary drunken rant and rave at Princeton, about cybernetic creatures from the future attempting to interrupt his warp flight.  What if he was telling the truth?  Maybe the Vulcans were lying because the implications of time travel being possible could be devastating.  Or perhaps they were just plain wrong?

So… strictly hypothetically, if time travel WERE possible… surely some of the ancient aliens we know of would have discovered it too, yes?  They’d probably have perfected means of using it.  And used it repeatedly, to go anywhere and anywhen in time and space.  Probably for all the reasons any of us would want to use it today.  Changing things.  Big things, like maybe the equivalent of stopping Hitler or Green, or preventing the Xindi attack or the Romulan war, or small things like saving a loved one or completely trivial things like getting to see a famous concert.

Which opens up yet another quantum fuckton of worms. How would you feel about finding out the life you live is in some kind of heavily modified timeline?  The whole word you now is the result of someone else fucking with the universe?  Perhaps things are better than they might be otherwise.  Or maybe it’s much, much worse.  You don’t know, you never will and it’s something you had no input in. You’re not who you’re supposed to be, but some weird alternate you that exists as the result of some douchnozzles tampering with something, somewhere. Even little tiny things can have massive consequences.  Imagine for a second, your Dad was doing something important, heard a suspicious noise outside (our hypothetical time traveller running through your yard) and your Mum’s the worrying type so she made him check it out, he never finished what he was doing.  What was the important thing he doing?  YOUR MUM and because he didn’t you were never conceived.  Imagine every life you’ve affected.  Even if you REALLY don’t matter, even if you have no friends and never had sex with anything other than your left hand and are the biggest failure ever.  Even then, you’ve slightly impacted the day of your schoolteachers, or your doctors or even random passers-by have looked your way and either seen or not seen something that had a similar crazy spiralling effect on their lives. It’s called The Butterfly Effect, named after some theory or other that a butterfly fluttering its wings can cause some kind of wind-related chain reaction that ends in a hurricane somewhere else.

So maybe, due to obscure and completely unpredictable effects of ancient aliens altering events in time, your life might not be what it should.  Does that bother anyone else?  It drives me nuts.  It makes my skin crawl.  Fuck whoever the hell it was who may have affected history on their planet or maybe even mine which rippled through time and made my life different to how it should be.  What would the universe be like if none of this happened?  And what’s it going to become when more and more aliens figure it out and start doing all the bad things?  What happens when we figure it out?  Once there was a Basic State, a history untampered with.  Am I a better person there?  Worse?  More or less successful?  Am I happier there?  Was I even born, or are my parents meeting off-chance knock-on effect of one of these tamperings?

Alright gang, home stretch. Since I do these little writeups every other day, I only have today the 25th, 27th, and 29th left to go. Maybe I’ll do something extra on the last day of the month, just to wrap up. We’ll see. For today:

My congratulations to Chloe Price on the distinction of being the only character to show up in two of these this month. Well done, madam. Ya just gotta love split-timeline stories in which they take the opportunity to have multiple happy scenarios in the end.

But yes, Rachel and Chloe. It was an odd journey for me to liking these two together. Really it was mostly a function of it taking a long time to decide how I felt about Rachel. From the starting point of Rachel being the missing kinda-sorta-maybe (definitely) ex in LiS 1, to the semi manic pixie dream girl but with real human flaws and problems thing in Before the Storm, to the more grown up and better adjusted version we get to meet in the comics... Rachel covers a lot of ground. But we’re here to talk about their relationship, both of them together, not just Rachel, and for that, we’re gonna need to go a mental journey down one of these possible paths.

First let’s set up how I think we get to the point of them living together before meeting them in the comics. I think the point of divergence is where you, as Chloe, Have a chance to ask Rachel to prove she’s serious about leaving Arcadia Bay together.

Now the interesting thing here is that only the kiss displays an out-and-out, intensely present romantic interest. The other interesting thing? In the first game, Rachel has this tattoo (the one in this pic being a placeholder Chloe drew on):

Meanwhile, if we check the comics...

No tattoo, not here or in even a single other panel of the entire series.

Basically my theory is that, in the timeline of the original game, Chloe asked Rachel to get a tattoo, she did, and then the events we’re familiar with played out.

In the comic timeline, meanwhile, she decided to be brave and go for the kiss. That would have changed how Rachel though of Chloe and their relationship, made her take things a bit more seriously. Eventually, they did end up leaving together, and they went right to where they always said they’d go, where Max would meet them: Santa Monica.

Why is this important? Because I think the key difference is Chloe being honest, vulnerable, and brave with her feelings. It’s hard for anyone to do, let alone Chloe at that point in her life. It’s a big difference, especially when they were that early in their relationship, and it would have had ripple effects. Regardless, how they get there is secondary. There are many things I like about their relationship in the comics, bu what I really want to highlight is something about their lives once they’ve gotten to Santa Monica.

In Before the Storm both of their stories center on hard to deal with emotions surrounding their families in general and their fathers especially. Chloe’s dad is dead and she’s having tremendous issues with her well-meaning but not always great mom and her new soon-to-be-stepdad. Rachel’s dad, as far as she can tell, is cheating on her mother, shattering her previously idealized picture of him. By the end I think I’d wish it were that simple, if I were her.

Both of them are going through these deeply, deeply painful experiences centered on their parents; feeling alienated from them, being unable to accept what seem to them like completely voluntary choices that do nothing but hurt them, be it Joyce inviting David to move in or Mr. Amber’s apparent infidelity. They are, at the end of the day, two very different people from very different homes who nonetheless feel hurt in a very similar way, and they find comfort in each other.

But by the time we meet them in the comics? We hear about none of it. We never hear anything about this timeline’s Joyce and David, even though we know for sure they’re fine, as Arcadia Bay is still standing. We never hear about Rachel’s family situation either. Nothing like that, in fact. Nothing at all. We just see the two of them happy, together, and living life.

Do you know how inspiring a message that can be? Especially for a lot queer people, the message of “your family hurting you is not the be-all end-all, there is life after them and it is a life that can be full of joy without them” is HUGE. Their lives are free of even the shadows of their painful family ties. They are living happily, well, and free, and that is beautiful to me.

Thoughts on Riverstar? I find him interesting, especially considering he objects to early clan life but ultimately becomes a leader despite that

River Ripple is actually one of the most interesting parts of DotC and if the Erins actually cared about how Clan Culture evolved, they would have made him a much bigger player in DotC. But no, instead, we've smacked the climactic Battle of Fourtrees in the MIDDLE of the arc to make room for the Clear Sky Redemption Arc That Isnt Even A Redemption Arc.

But hey at least we got One Eye and Slash. We all remember One Eye and Slash right. Those were villains that definitely didnt feel forced and entirely completely didnt contribute to the 'evil foreigner' thing that warrior cats as a series is plagued with

No it doesn't count if you only remember One Eye through CheeCats, CheeCats has a massive brain and can do whatever they want forever. If you or a loved one has started shipping River Ripple x One Eye as a result of CheeCats you may be entitled to financial compensation.

But enough grinding my teeth over the parts of DotC I don't like. This is about Riverstar, a part of DotC that I DO like

Cats of the Park

The Cats of the Park have such a fascinating culture, and it seems to have a bunch of the 'missing pieces' that the Sun Trail cats don't share with their descendants. The mentor/apprenticeship system, the nature reverence, the changing of names after significant events, the rigid schedules and rituals of their daily lives...

Even the leap to worshiping STARS comes from River Ripple and the Cats of the Park.

Heck, it would have been super cool if the Clan cats actually got to react to the destruction of the Park. I think that would have been a really fun and horrific way to rise up the tension, put more stress on the forest to feed a sudden influx of cats, and establish that humans are starting to encroach.

ESPECIALLY if it happened after Thunder Rising, you know? Set up River Ripple as one of Thunder's good friends, helping him realize that his relationship with his biodad is toxic. Then he falls into the river but comes out okay, instilling a reverence of the forest in ALL of his friends

Riverstar Himself

It's really cool to see that River himself is so relaxed about everything, it's a fun and refreshing mindset that we don't get in very many cats, ESPECIALLY not after the rigidity of Clan life is established in later books.

I think that would have been a super cool contrast to the invasive mountain cats, with Clear Sky bringing his concept of borders and battles, and River Ripple trying to appease him with teamwork and diplomacy... and Thunder, Wind Runner, and Tall Shadow realizing it is not going to work.

So I think if there's one thing I really don't like about River Ripple as a character, it's how he doesn't get dragged into the bigger conflicts.

I don't think any character should have gotten that luxury, especially not someone who will become a leader later on. I think the writers let him have too much of an easy time hiding behind his river and watching everything happen from afar.

He does get involved in the One Eye and Slash conflicts, of course... but personally it just feels kinda weak.

Like, he understands the purpose of getting involved AFTER witnessing the corpse-making event at Fourtrees, not suffering loss or injury exactly because he minded his own business? Feels backwards to me.

So to be clear: What I WANT is for him to not want to get involved, but the plot should keep dragging him back in against his will.

Anyway, overall I really like the guy.

Just finished watching all 8 episodes of Paper Girls.

Is it worth watching? Yes. It's pretty enjoyable. The show is easier to follow than the comic book was. The acting is good, the writing is decent, music is great, special effects are mostly good. It deals with most of the same themes, except for the commercialism of Apple products that were ubiquitous in the books.

It is only 8 episodes and ends on a cliffhanger, so if that's a deal killer then maybe skip it. Or you could read the comic books and then watch the show. It makes the cliffhanger easier to handle. Maybe.

They did change enough that the events of next season are more of mystery than you might expect.

So much was changed that I can only begin to touch on it. Mostly, it was the sequence of events, but there was a whole thing with Larry that was made for the show, and the only characters that weren't significantly different were KJ and Mac. Their first trip to the future was changed to a slightly different year. They haven't gone way back in time yet, though the last episode ended in a time jump.

Erin was changed in a fundamental way and gets to angst about the ripples of that in her older self for a while.

Things that I liked:

Tiffany's future self has a very different story, but OG Tiff is still OG Tiff.

KJ found out some fundamental truths in a very different way that, IMO, was more fitting for a tv show and more satisfying, tbh. They're actually building up her relationship with Mac in a way the books didn't dedicate much time to.

I really liked the time that Mac and Erin spent together and grew their friendship. It showed another side to Mac and added depth to her character.

A different character got her period and had to figure out how to handle that. There's a hilarious scene where Mac nabs some tampons for her and they all wonder how they're used.

The music. It's clear that a huge chunk of their budget went to time-appropriate music, and I loved their selections. Great soundtrack.

The color palette. We still get to see the pinks, purples and blues that made the art of the books so memorable, though they're usually only present when some kind of timey-whimey thing is happening.

Things I didn't like:

Grand Father only shows up twice, I think. We don't get to see the multiple versions of him and how he explains/justifies what he's doing and why he's trying to preserve the timeline until the very end.

KJ taking a guy out early on and having to deal with the possibility that she killed someone for most of the show.

KJ punching Mac. Like girl, I know you're having a gay panic, but come on. Too far.

KJ not having her hockey stick with her for the whole thing. I guess the tradeoff is that we got to see her riding a motorcycle to save Mac.

Erin not having her bag with her the whole time. I know it wasn't really important, but it was one of those character details that shows how much they changed Erin.

Prioress practically being the Terminator. The way she tracked them and blended into each time as she tried to find the girls. I'm actually on the fence about this, but I'm leaning more to the "didn't like it" than neutral. She was the only one trying to track them. We only ever seen a team arrive once, and it was after a battle that they needed to clean up.

Everything with Larry. He's clearly a replacement for the old lady they encounter in the books, but the stuff with him took up significant time, while the old lady shows up in what? Two scenes? Maybe three? Narratively, I guess it makes sense as a way to introduce the idea of the STF Underground, but they never explain the war very well and that the "Underground" is just a few people in different times that were recruited to send messages through the paper (which does not seem to be a character unto itself like in the books) to the actual STF time travelers. Actually, that's a mechanic that doesn't exist in the show at all. For a show called "Paper Girls," this show has very few references to the paper.

It's a "Battle of the Ages," but that's never really touched on in the show. Eight episodes and it's only hinted at near the end. Come on!

I just binged the first season of the arcanist marcy wu and I LOVED IT!! the vibes! the feels! the writting is wonderful you put so much work and thought into it and it's awsome!

I love your reading of all the charecters you put at the end of the chapters it's such a cool addition and I loved hearing your thoughts

I love your analysis of marcy anne and sasha, somewhere back thre you put in a line like "love is not a moral compass" and it's stuck with me so much as I was thinking about the trio's problems, since it's somtihng I alwasy had trouble putting into words since they both deeply violently love each other but are also willing to do terrible things with the excuse that they were doing it for each other.

oh! and the subtle differces in marcy and sasha drive me up the wall everytime because they're the kind of people who are scary alone but you can tell that whenever they put up a united front, they're gonna get whatever they want(like when anne is hesitant about stealing the music box) but they're also very different people

ah sorry about so much but well I just binged like hundreds of thousands of words and my brain hurts

oh and I lved all the little things that stayed the same because anne dosen't cause them, but they end up compltetly different because marcy is just a wildly different person from anne, the tax toads are the obvious exsample but even the smaller stuff like the family shrub, driving bessie, the election all that stuff the world stays the same but the outcome changes because the charecters are differnt people and I think that's just a mark of a really good swap au for any story

'Love is not a moral compass' is honestly one of my favorite bits of character analysis I've done. While it was originally an explanation of Marcy's motivations vs. moral framework, I think you're right that it can apply more broadly to the trio's toxic friendship as a whole.

Please rest your brain. That is a lot of writing to read in what sounds like a short amount of time.

On the last note, yeah, I think that's always the most important thing about writing a swap AU. While its super cool to take canon events and see illustrations of all the characters swapped places, I think the important thing for a swap AU fanfic is to see how the characters react differently when presented similar situations and then following the ripple effects from there.

CHARACTER: FLYNN RIDER! Members highlighted A’s selfpara series that documented big career moves for Flynn, and the cherry on top was the Flolley kiss! Finally!!! We’ve loved seeing Flynn’s career and his ship develop and are so excited to see where these changes take him.

THREAD: CATFISH EXPOSED! Swynrp loves a plot that not only includes multiple characters and muns, but that has additional implications for other characters too. We loved to see Gabriella taking the L for her friend, Bruce’s grappling with it, and Annie and Toby sticking their noses in mermaid business! Can’t wait to see the ripple effect on the merfolk of Swynlake.

TASK: B’ BULLSEYE IN THE MANDALORIAN! Not only was the bonus of B’ original art mentioned, but members also pointed out that her plot description fit both the show and Bullseye’s character so well that it was mind-blowing!

Plot: Simber has bought a house in London! It is a historical house, called Strawberry Hill, in the affluent Richmond upon Thames neighborhood. The house came with a twist--it is haunted! After Loud Bell came to visit, Hades informed Simber that the ghost would like to use she/her pronouns and goes by "Strawberry." They also met their neighbors, a lesbian couple, Regina and Anitta, who have two Dalmatians from the Dalmatian Plantation: Dottie and Smith. Regina, who goes by Reggie, invited Simba to join their football team. Jenny has also come for a visit, to look around before things are fully complete! They are doing a ton of renovation as the house fell into disrepair after it sat on the market for years, due to the haunting. Simber will be moving to London at the end of this month, though Simba will be commuting until the end of the school year. 

THE IVY GROVE BED AND BREAKFAST

Plot: After someone (Gem) burned down Toulouse's house, he has built it back better than ever by hiring Morey Construction. After speaking with some new werewolves in town, primarily Angel and Lucky, he has decided giving new wolves in town a place to stay for cheap would be prudent. The new location is a lovely B&B with four bedrooms, two of which have already been filled by guests Raksha, her son Dhaumya, and Scott.

Plot: Elinor turned 50 and threw a little formal dinner at the castle! Her friends from dinner club were in attendance: Roz, Moon, and Cass. As well as her bestie, Hera. Merida and the boys were also forced to be there. Flynn came over earlier in the day to help with a lighting issue. Moon saved Cass some embarrassment by lending her an evening gown.

WE’RE GOING IN A DIFFERENT DIRECTION

short thoughts on ripples, negaeba, liar liar

"ripples" is—as its author describes—the beginning of a journey. it's only like, 10-ish minutes long, and it's free

i find the story behind this vn helps reinforce its message. the story of a person deciding to make something for their friend to cheer them up is a bit cheesy i think, and an action with so much sincerity behind it. and ripples is very sincere about its message. the protag is a big jerk, but he meets a girl who shows him the sincerity in people. how like, people can be so wholeheartedly and so unashamedly honest in what they believe in.

i tend to like these kinds of stories where the characters act as mouthpieces for clashing philosophies. it's probably the whole dialogue aspect of it. talking to each other, hearing each other out, discussing, changing. i like to believe i can change the world, but a part of me vehemently denies that. mm. well, whether or not it's true, i don't think it's too hard to see that we make ripples (wao) in each other's lives no matter what we do

it was translated along with a few other vns in al|together (i believe the first translation for narcissu was released in an earlier al|together, so the project is very dear to my heart). you can find downloads for this one and others in the link above. i don't actually have much to say about this one, it has a nice soundtrack, and i do agree with the author's sentiment in the Read Me.txt

sometimes a story is just a story, and not anything groundbreaking. this one tackles themes of regret and redemption. i feel a few elements were underused, such as the protagonist and the love interest having the same illness and being admitted at the same time that seems to set up for something more than what we got.

i can appreciate negaeba in that it's a story about weakness, i think. or something adjacent to that, probably? weakness and wanting to make amends, is perhaps a bit more precise. the story ends abruptly, and while i do think it certainly works as an ending to a story, i was left a bit unsatisfied with this one.

ooh, i will say i quite like the music in this one, though.

a compelling plot is understandably not the main goal of this vn. despite that i found it kinda compelling. got the good ending on my first try and i thought the sequence of events was engaging enough. i find the art direction appealing too, it's super cute. went and did the other endings after too.

i wanted to play this a few years back in high school but never really got around to it for some reason. i had more fun with this than i expected ngl.

i didn't expect it to but you can look at this as a sorta women empowerment kinda story i think. both girls in the story are screwed over by guys in diff ways (cheating, stalking) and they exact their revenge upon them and the system by killing 'em. idk. it's something like that methinks.

Top Ten Important Moments in the MCU

Well this has turned out to be an opportune week to write a pre-planned list al about the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The stars have aligned, I guess. I’m not slagging anything off though. I like everything, even the crap bits.

One of the things I do really love about the MCU is the interconnectedness of it all. I don’t really mean Falcon cropping up in Ant-Man or anything like that; I just generally like the fact that these stories all take place in the same universe. And part of the thrill of that universe is thinking about how actions within one story might have ramifications in another. Because at the end of the day, unlike how most films would deal with stuff in the past, we’re always going to have to see how the chips fall once a film is done. The aliens are destroyed in Independence Day, but we don’t get to see humanity rebuild the world; there’s a dinosaur in San Diego in The Lost World but then the film ends without us even seeing the next day’s headlines. The MCU – for the most part – has actually done a very good job of showing the way these superheroic events have rippled through the world.

And so this list – timed to celebrate both the release of The Marvels and also the finale of Loki season 2 this Friday – is going to highlight what I think are the most important moments of the MCU. Except I’m specifically looking at how important they are within the MCU; the biggest ripples, if you will. Now right away this has opened up a can of worms for me, because some events I think are probably hugely significant, but don’t really impact Earth immediately; others are tied up in time and space shenanigans that mean pinning down one moment is a bit tricky. So let’s say, for the sake of argument, that I’ve ranked these by how important they’d feel to a GP in Hull.

And that’s all there is to it! Ten seismic, Earth-shattering moments from within the MCU. Now let’s all go book our tickets for The Marvels.

The Snap (Avengers: Infinity War, 2018): when literally half of all life disappears in the click of a finger and a small shower of dust, that’s gonna be a big deal. To Marvel’s credit, the frankly huge ramifications of this were shown in the Endgame time-jump, and the ramifications of bringing everybody back has also been shown. This was a seismic, epochal event, and it continues to ripple, changing people’s relationships and having a lasting effect on the world of the MCU. Plus you could argue it lead to the death of Tony Stark and all that jazz.

The Battle of New York (The Avengers, 2012): this is a biggie not just because it resulted in the formation of the Avengers themselves, but also because it would have been, for most of planet Earth, the first proof of life elsewhere in the universe. An actual alien invasion would have blown everyone’s minds, and whilst most people seem to have acclimatised to the situation pretty swiftly, there’ll always be a “before New York” and “after New York”.

The Multiverse (Loki, 2021): this is a tricky one for a number of reasons, but let’s get the easy part out of the way: Sylvie killing He Who Remains essentially creates the MCU Multiverse, spawning a possibly infinite number of alternate realities stretching back and forth through time. That’s quite a big deal! But for a start, you could argue that the multiverse had always existed, as once she’s done the deed, it always has existed. Plus, once it exists/has existed, does that effect the people of Earth particularly? Do they even know? Obviously there’s a whole Saga going on about this – and Loki season 2 hasn’t quite finished – so what the ultimate ramifications will be we still don’t quite know. But it feels like a pretty big deal.

The Sokovia Accords (Captain America: Civil War, 2016): another moment that had a series of wide-ranging outcomes. On the one hand, the very notion of “registered superheroes” is quite a big deal, and instantly makes unlicensed vigilantism a more dangerous profession. However, it’s the impact it had on the Avengers themselves – and the rift between Tony and Steve – that was arguably the biggest deal. You could argue that they lead to the death of T’Chaka and therefore T’Challa’s rise to King of Wakanda. The fallout from all of this saw Tony recruiting Spider-Man. And, of course, Steve being on the run meant he wasn’t there when Bruce Banner came crashing to Earth in Infinity War; perhaps if the Accords had not happened then a united Avengers could have somehow stopped Thanos before the Snap even took place?

Hail Hydra (Captain America: The Winter Soldier, 2014): before all of that, there’s the time when we found out that all along evil WWII Nazi super-baddies Hydra were secretly pulling the world’s strings. This was a shocking enough revelation, but in defeating them it also meant the destruction of planet-protecting SHIELD, up till that point the spine of the MCU; in their absence, the Avengers themselves rose to fill the void, arguably setting in place the events that lead to the Sokovia Accords and, well, everything else. Ripples!

Wakanda Revealed (Black Panther, 2018): one of the, perhaps unexpected, results of all the Sokovia business and what followed was King T’Challa revealing the secrets of Wakanda to the world. A seemingly third-world nation suddenly emerging as the most technologically advanced and powerful country was a mind-bender; but this in turn resulted in most of the other nations seeking access to its store of Vibranium, which arguably lead to the war with Talokan in Wakanda Forever. And who knows what else?

Ragnarok (Thor: Ragnarok, 2017): in what I still think is one of the ballsiest moves of the MCU, Thor: Ragnarok literally sees Asgard completely destroyed and its citizens – once thought of as galactic protectors – thrust into the role of refugees. Infinity War suggested the lack of Asgard’s protection lead to Thanos forcing the Dwarves of Nidavellir to craft the Infinity Gauntlet, and possibly allowed him to ransack an undefended Xandar and seize the Power Stone. And, of course, the Asgardians eventually make a home on Earth; which would feel like quite a strange turn of events considering most people didn’t even know aliens existed a few years earlier.

“I am Iron Man” (Iron Man, 2008): whilst superheroes of some kind or another existed before Iron Man (both Caps, for instance!), he was arguably the first true “modern” hero. We, as audiences, are accustomed to such heroes having secret identities; but Tony Stark, of course, blew that out the water. By becoming, essentially, a celebrity superhero, it set the stage for all of his future inventions and interventions: “privatising world peace”, the Stark Expo, Stark Tower, “a suit of armour around the world”, etc. But it was also a catalyst for the creation of the Avengers themselves; as Fury said, he wasn’t the only superhero in the world. The film Iron Man, and Downey’s performance in it, helped set the tone for the rest of the movies in the MCU; but Tony’s decision to admit to, and own, his status as a superhero also set the tone for what transpired in-universe, too.

Captain America Returns (Captain America: The First Avenger, 2011): this one feels so obvious that I don’t feel I need to go into too much detail. Yeah, Fury was already trying to create the Avengers, ever since he met Captain Marvel; and Tony in his suit and Banner with his rage were already out there in the world. But the discover of Steve Rogers frozen in ice, and his subsequent employment with SHIELD, and then his leadership of the Avengers, was absolutely instrumental in everything that happened afterwards. Tony might have been the engine that drove the MCU, but Steve was its heart and soul. And its ass.

“A Mutation” (Ms. Marvel, 2022): this one might be a bit of a cheat because – thus far – I don’t really know how significant it is in-universe; I doubt there are too many people who even know about it. But that moment in Ms. Marvel, when Bruno tells Kamala that she possesses a “mutation” (cue the music!) is a watershed for the MCU; out there, in the world, are other people with mutations (we’ve met at least one in Wakanda Forever). The existence of, and revelation of, capital-M Mutants is going to be one of the most significant and impactful events in the world, if previous adaptations of X-Men are anything to go by. So this might just feel like a cool nod to fans right now, but I think it’s the tip of a very big iceberg; one that might just go “bamf” or “snikt” at any moment.

Unhappily Single & Ruled By IBS

Donna worked with me after having had a reading with me, she was very unhappily single yet again and now found herself in her 50's & 'alone'.

Relationship Misery

Donna couldn't understand why her relationships kept failing, she put so much time, energy & love into them, she'd done so much for the men she'd dated only for the relationships to end once she'd 'healed' them (see my recent blog on why we recreate patterns in our life that don't serve us).

Donna also had Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), the bloating, stomach cramps & the upset tummy which she had 24/7 was making her life hell & was eroding her confidence.

How NLP Techniques Helped Donna

During our sessions I used various NLP techniques, the first one is called 2 Chair Work & involved putting her IBS in a chair & giving it a personality, we then chatted with it to find out why it was here. Based on the information Mr IBS gave us we knew it was trying to keep her safe, it was trying to protect her, it just got a bit lost on how it chose to do that!

Next I used a technique called Timeline Therapy which simply involves taking the mind back in time to the originating point of the IBS, it turned out that as a small child she'd been left with a family friend so her parents could go out for their first night since becoming parents, but instead of explaining this to her, they distracted her & left as soon as she wasn't looking.

The young Donna felt heartbroken at being 'abandoned' by her parents but Donna in 2023 had no recollection of this event in her concious memory because she was so young when it happened.

When she was about 9 years old, her mum & dad divorced & dad moved back to his home country & then when she was 19 her mother died. These events devastated her, understandably, however, they created her future.

These events all left her feeling 'abandoned' but they were very old events, her body was sending her a message that she had old emotions that needed releasing, this was the role of the IBS as this was her emotions being internalised instead of processed.

She Was Recreating The Childhood Abandonment

During the Timeline Therapy Donna realised that because she'd been hurt by being abandoned, her trauma was actually creating behaviour that resulted in any relationship she had, breaking down, by creating these behaviours she was sabotaging the relationships so they'd leave her, just as she knew they would, because after all, didn't her parents leave her more than once? This is a self-fulfilling prophecy! Donna wasn't aware she was doing it, it was all in her subconscious brain which actually drives 95% of our behaviour (sleep, hunger, being hot/cold etc are conscious brain activities).

We used another NLP technique called Reframing to change how she felt about those early experiences, she knew her parents loved her, she knew they'd returned & hadn't abandoned her, but the toddler version of her hadn't known that so she needed reassuring. By reassuring the toddler Donna that all was as it should be, that rippled along her timeline & was released by Donna 2023.

After Releasing The Behaviour She Healthily Plans Her Wedding

Donna now released the behaviour that was sabotaging her relationships and I'm pleased to say that in her last reading I saw a wedding for her and she smiled & told me she was in a relationship & they'd set a date for their wedding.

The even better news though was the fact that her Irritable Bowel Syndrome had cleared up completely and her confidence was already coming back.

Follies at the Coven Day Parade!

            The return of bread puns! SKINLESS HOOTY?!?! Luz reciprocates the CHEEK kiss-

            Oh my GAAAWWWDDDD Luz reciprocated! And like THAT it was so casual! And we got Gus helping, or TRYING to help Amity with human customs, Amity speaking Spanish and calling Luz her Sweet Potato! Sweet Potato is now OUR term you guys, got it?!

            Willow… Willow’s new hairstyle is from Amity?! Them repairing their friendship, making the first steps! WILLOW EXERCISING, plus that brief shot of Willow… That cut to her face when Amity said she’s glad they can be friends again, is she hesitant? Mixed feelings? Just content to sit back and relax???

            Bruh… Gus and Willow discussing Belos’ face as does Amity, LUZ getting surprised and flustered by Amity, they keep matching each other! Bruh I know Gus and Willow are disappointed but the BELOS SIMPS, hoo boy…! Little do you know; Also DAMN, Belos actually did it! He showed his real face, and they even gave us his actual face in private, so we know he’s not faking to the public via illusion! He… I wonder if a part of him is GENUINE in his thanks to the isles, holy shit. If he was Philip… Then yeah, I could see it! He’s legitimately happy, that twisted bastard… To him, all he had to do was iron out a few wrinkles here or there, but ultimately he’s GLAD he found it?!? That’s… So twisted because it’s such a human but true look at Belos; He’s just like Luz then. Sure, it’s had its ups and downs, but Belos is genuinely glad he found this place and wouldn’t change that… Holy shit. The humanization is disturbing knowing such a genuine person can still be like that, still BECAME that… It’s unnerving and I love it!

            RAINE! TERRA SNAPDRAGON! If I had to guess, Raine didn’t actually make the choice to betray Belos until about a month ago… Interesting, but it seems Terra’s drug wiped their memories of the past month. I wonder if this coincides with Luz breaking out Katya from the Conformatorium, who then must’ve met Raine… Did Katya help inspire Raine? Did Raine hear of Luz; Did LUZ set this in motion?! She really DID change everything with her presence, just that one outlier with the ripple effect!

            God… We got the full childhood photo too! And Luz’s reaction to Raeda, King teasing Eda! Eda trying to keep an eye out! And I love that Luz at least TOLD Eda and King first, before deciding to tell her friends; And I love how Amity is in tune with Luz enough to notice something’s wrong regardless! I love supportive GF’s that actually HELP each other, and the parallels and foils to Raeda, with one keeping a secret… The other explaining that it’s hard to have a relationship with that!

            Raeda is still heartbroken, but Lumity overcomes the past generation’s mistakes! “One step at a time” OH MY GAWD I love how HEALTHY this little gay relationship is, it’s making me cry! AND AMITY RESPECTING LUZ’S PRIVACY! Not being like her mom, but still knowing something is wrong and inquiring in a respectful way! Also love that callback to Understanding Willow, with Willow less respectful of Luz’s privacy, if only because Luz did the same to HER… Absolutely fair.

            A glimpse of Lilith and Gwen! Gwen in her new outfit and glasses! Looking concerned! And Kikimora… Damn, I was honestly 50/50 if she was genuine or not. When she did her evil laugh, I thought it was all her plan, but no; She LEGIT turned back on all that, just because of the potential of a promotion! She’s absolutely lost it… Why is she so devoted? What is her relationship to her family, which she’s now happily thrown out, seeing a chance to make up for the events of Eclipse Lake? I NEED MORE-

            Also damn… Terra may be a Coven Head, but she still seems to be higher-ranking than Kikimora, implicitly! If Kikimora is young-ish, I guess it makes sense; I’ve talked before of Terra likely being an OG supporter of Belos, someone who fought by his side since the very beginning; BEFORE he was popular! So it makes sense that Belos trusts her so much, including with the brainwashing… LOVE this glimpse at her! Also Belos really is playing it smart; Making himself look good, not wanting kid blood on his hands, showing his face. He really does know how to get a crowd, and GETS that it’s all about the good publicity; It’s honestly clever and realistic.

            But also, does he see parallels with himself and Luz, and that’s why he’s sparing her? Alongside Amity, because he wouldn’t want to ruin Luz’s experience for her? Does he have the same goals as Luz as Philip, and he can just sort of tell and predict Luz’s dilemma; And Belos is SO certain that when the time comes, Luz will agree and go with him? Having such a rebel ultimately side with Belos… It really shows just how convincing he is! 

            Also Edric being illegal with King! And canonically the kind of mischief-maker to get himself injured! Love the interaction, and the return of the King watch… Eda excelling at glyphs is looking GREAT, and we finally see what glyphs combine for invisibility! Also YAS Amity, ‘interfering’ with the mission, but really just helping Luz at a crucial moment! Showing her that yes, it IS easier with your GF, and you gotta consider that; It’s hard doing it alone, let her in!

            Love the Abomination skateboard, but the teamup! The magic combo, battle girlfriends YES! Also just remembered but Kikimora is from Palm Stings, which is a very nice pun, but also fits with her hand motif; I assume she’s from one of the hands, maybe the right arm, closest to Bonesborough? Can’t tell. Still, I hope we get more Kikimora explanation, and this isn’t just it in regards to her motives; She really does have Mommy Issues like Lilith. Everyone in that damn coven has issues and is (not so) secretly PATHETIC, damn! Belos really is just running circles around them… Also just realized, but with the implication that Belos closely trusts Terra and vice-versa, are we gonna see people ship them?!

            Overall this was a… FANTASTIC episode! The angst with Raeda… The characters TALKING about things, instead of saving it for the last second; Actually communicating, no more drama through miscommunication! It’s so good and cathartic, it’s like watching Steven finally tell Connie about his issues after the end of Season 1, I LOVE THIS SONG! I love this subversion of hero trying to be all tough! Obviously Luz is a girl so there isn’t that same masculine expectation with Steven, but you get the idea!

            God… Raeda. Lumity; THE PARALLELS. And King and Hooty! Fleshless Hooty… The show really dropped THAT on us and didn’t elaborate, huh? But I love seeing Lumity be an important part of the girls’ arcs without romance being all there is to it, it’s the support and guidance to get through this together, figuring out what you want for yourself! Amity helps LUZ, as Luz has helped her so much! I love it so much, the reciprocration, the HEALTHY AND HEALING RELATIONSHIP! I’d say I can’t believe this is a Disney product, but then I remember Disney is cutting this show short, so of course!

            Also those end credits! Seems we’re building up to a climax at the head of the Titan; Which is probably where Season 3 starts! Is this addition late into production, changing the climax ASAP? Belos said when the tide is low and when the eclipse is ready (big shock at that last point), which indicates that King’s Tide is when the Day of Unity occurs, in exactly a month! Would the original Season 3 have involved a fused realm and the ramifications, or did the writers rush up the Day of Unity to the end of Season 2, due to the shortening? Either way, I am HYPED by that ominous end shot of the trio looking ahead at the skull; Always such a big deal and built up, as the head of the Titan! And as what Luz saw when she first learned from nature… Does Belos think Luz can also speak to the Titan, or at least hope? Does he think she can do so for him, or hopes that she can do so ALONG WITH him!

            And on a final note… Luz helping freaking KIKIMORA, because she wants others to get what SHE can’t have! Obviously it’s a bit projecting and selfish in the sense that Luz hopes Kikimora can prove it’s possible, but still. This underlying theme of not getting things, so you make sure others don’t have to go through that! Breaking the cycle of pain and abuse, deciding it ENDS with you, and nobody should have to sympathize with that! It’s an almost lonely, yet NOBLE cause… I’m sobbing, Luz, as well as EDA!!! Also Eda has a canonical diary LEMME SEE! And I like that Raine isn’t BRAINWASHED brainwashed, they’re still themselves so we can get that drama and see them help Eda… Hunter mentioned they were more ‘quiet’, so I wonder if Raine had gotten ‘louder’ during their month operating as a BATT? Interesting… Still, glad to see Raine show actual personality and agency, def keeps them from being fridged, nor do we have to deal with a fake Raine because it’s not really them speaking but the brainwashing! I dig it, nicely done writers!
