Oh nein! Mal has issues! With consequences of his actions he should be grateful for, and his girl not sharing every waking thought with him, when her worst worries spring from his most hated topics- the Darkling and her role in politics.

And Alina once again feels responsible for his feelings.

Yeah, this would have a bit more weight, if Alina didn't do it only for appearances' sake. Or if she granted the position due to merit, not random pick of what she views as the lowest low. Or if she didn't continue speaking as if she were a narrator of wildlife documentary, describing a new species of animal that just appeared.

Not necessarily, but it's one of Alina's less far-fetched deductions.

Aleksander could've been aware of David's fascination with Morozova's work. He could've picked the most skilled in bonework or the one most experienced in forging amplifiers- they're supposed to be rare, so not many Fabricators will have that.

*mumbles* And somehow we're to believe this pragmatic man chose to follow Alina, because... ? She's the good one, or whatever?!

*chants* Double agent Kaminsky, double agent Kaminsky!

Alina: Why would you want to kill this man! How horrible! At least question him first!

She would make a delightful morally flexible character, if she were acknowledged as such, and embracing that quality.

I would sympathize with Alina much more, if she showed genuine interest in those she doesn't know. If her motivation weren't merely "Do the opposite of (what I think) the Darkling did". I she truly believed in her own philosophy.

People forced to sit next to half-strangers they're not used to interact with, create unpleasant atmosphere!

My work experience considered- you're lucky there's no visible enmity- you could've made the wrong people sit next to each other and tableware could've ended up in wrong bodyparts.

Also: How is Nadia sitting next to Marie? I thought breaking up already existing friend groups was a point of this whole exercise.

They're not gifts, Nikolai. They're just your father's property, but let's remember the Darkling didn't wait for the Queen to request a specific one's service, and turned it into a gesture of his own thoughtfulness. Fuck his strategems!

Alina's misplaced sensibilities are incredibly frustrating.

She wants to lead Second Army, but not order them, not assign them tasks directly, because that would somehow make her a bad person, instead of efficient leader.

What if no one will volunteer? What if weak, incompetent Squallers will? You don't look at special assignment and think- Yeah, whoever wants to do it... You PICK the most capable person with both sufficient skills AND suitable personality.

All I can think about recently is that there are three main career options for Grishaverse main characters:

A) Child soldier

B) Criminal

I really think Mal Oretsev is the worst endgame romantic interest in existence.

Really.

There are many canonical ships I disagree with, but Malina ? This is the worst of all for me.

Alina had so much potential, and it was all wasted on a stupid tracker ; When she could have had the Darkling or Nikolai !

As much as I will always wonder what could be wrong in Alina's head to prefer her childhood friend to these two, and also what could have been going on in Leigh Bardugo's head when she wrote the character of Mal and the Malina relationship.

Like... she didn't notice that the character and the relationship were catastrophic ? Is that the height of romance for her ?

It sucks...

I forgot a bit to this post, so let's make a new one... (eye roll, facepalm etc.)

There are any Grisha garrisons, that weren't attacked? Because otherwise I see no point discussing their previous numbers.

x Grisha - x Grisha running from armed and angry First Army = 0 Grisha left "at various outposts around Ravka"

As for how many might be in hiding- just do more math by subtracting the amount of murdered Grisha from (without doubt) recorded number of the Crown's magical serfs- tadaaa! Now how many of those are stupid enough to believe they'll be any more safe from First Army, than shortly after their widely feared general disappeared?

Another interesting question would be if anyone bothered to keep track of the murdered ones? Did they get at least buried? I'm not asking about proper funeral with rites, just a hole in the ground.

How are "news of [Alina's] return" supposed to change their mind that there's no need to keep running? She doesn't know Grisha living IN Little Palace, what is her "return" to those stationed near borders? Oh, I forgot! She's THE Sun Summoner! Lantsov's new pet figurehead! Who's done nothing for anyone EVER!

Why should they pledge loyalty to the throne that sees them as less then property, their elimination worth not even investiagtion or penalty? What is Second Army without it's leader and his protection?

That's what I was setting out to show with the Darkling."

I wonder if Leigh Bardugo realizes that she effectively did put an "I'm the bad guy" sign on the Darkling by heavily coding him as a villain from his first introduction. When I look at his portrayal in Shadow and Bone, his beauty is described many times but has little impact on individuals outside of Alina (and even Alina isn't that swayed by it). So what is he? He’s certainly not a wolf in sheep’s clothing, because the reader can clearly tell that he’s a wolf, so what does that leave us with? A pretty wolf?

His name being "The Darkling", dressed in all black, uses shadow magic, shrouded in rumors, if that isn't an "I'm a bad guy" sign then I don't know what is. She clearly understands that the nature of actual abusive people is nuanced and isn't always obvious to the average person and she articulates that thought well. So that makes it even more baffling that she sees the Darkling as a subversion of that obviously abusive figure when his depiction is so clumsy.

On one hand, she wants to create a villain that embodies abusive characteristics that one might encounter in real life. She wants to say "Sometimes you can't tell right away" and illustrate the way people can fall victim to abusive situations. On the other hand, she can't help but write the Darkling as overtly sympathetic, flesh out his motives, and give him a legitimate reason to do what he does. In doing so, she slacks off on her abuse narrative and opts to make the Darkling's more noble and sympathetic qualities outweigh the scant evidence of that abuse narrative. This is why she has the Darkling commit illogical acts of violence that don't align with his previously established strategies. She needs a grand show of villainy to make up for her failure to convey the subtlety of what she had originally intended.

i do love the embroidery in the show, especially how, yk, much there is of it, and how identifiable it makes it, but on the other hand the books only ever mention the cuffs and hems so i like to think i struck a nice balance

I wish I didn’t care this much. When I thought about potential bad news I knew I would be disappointed but I feel a bit like I’m being crushed and no-one understands why, and I think this is in many ways a reminder of the way so many people don’t view the things we are so vibrantly and beautifully passionate about as things worth being passionate about. But our passion is wonderful, it is bright and strong and it produces art and emotion and community and we deserve that. I adore these books so goddamn much but I think on some level when a book has an adaptation and the name becomes recognisable, the people who don’t understand our pain can at least acknowledge what it is and that’s unfairly vindicating, like I’m allowed to enjoy it because it’s recognisable so I’m not weird for doing so. That shouldn’t be the case and it’s not fair that it is, but it doesn’t change the fact that people are more reactive to me saying “there’s a TV show of it on Netflix!” than they are to me saying “it’s a powerful book series that changed my life”. I feel like I’ve had something taken away from me. And I feel like the knowledge that the show got cancelled will breed an idea of the books not being worth the time because the show wasn’t, and that’s just so so so not true. I’m reminding myself that these beautiful, life-changing books have always been the heart of this fandom and losing the show does not mean less love for the books, they mean the world to me. But that doesn’t stop this from hurting.

Anyway I needed to get that out, I don’t know, maybe I’ll delete this later. But there’s really something magic here, and I will love it forever. To have had an adaptation is a wonderful privilege and I’m so glad we got to see it, I just wish we’d been able to see a little more.
