Em's 500 Followers Challenge
Thank you again for the 500 followers, it means a lot. This is a fun challenge to celebrate and to hopefully get everyone's creative juices flowing. This is a Taylor Swift inspired challenge because I love her music and I find her lyrics make great prompts.
Rules:
It's open to anyone whether you follow me or not.
You are welcome to create whatever you like - fics, headcanons, gif sets, edits, fanart, moodboards etc.
What you create should be for/inspired by The Last Kingdom/Seven Kings Must Die but can feature any character/ship/topic you like.
For fics, you can write anything you like (angst, smut, fluff, whatever you fancy) but please tag appropriately and use readmore if it's long.
Pick a prompt from below - you can either use the song title itself as a prompt, a lyric from that song or the whole song; likewise for the albums you can use the title itself as a prompt or create something off the general vibe/colour/theme of the album (which I've included in brackets).
Please let me know which prompt you would like to use. You can have as many as you like but only two people can have the same prompt (I will cross prompts off once two people have picked them).

TTPD Thoughts
It's just wild to me how Taylor clearly meant for "The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived" to be about Matty and people listen to that song and then have the audacity to think "Yup, these other songs and all her previous songs were about him". She literally said "I don't miss what we had" and "I'll forget you". And you think "love/loss of my life" is for that same man? 🤨
Also the fact remains Harry is the only muse she has ever given a full on album to, the only muse she ever said, with no hesitation, that he was the one who'd float in and out of her life, be the one who you'd always wonder "what if", etc. and they think all her pining songs about a long lost love is not that muse and is instead Matty?! 💀
I still will die on the hill she, in general, has woven multiple muses into songs and the biggest reason for that is Harry. 1989 was the one album she was very obvious with who her muse was and he was in every song. Then everything hit the fan and she became more private and went into hiding. Then comes back with Reputation. And that's where the woven muses happened. Realistically she had very little time with Joe while Rep was being done. Yes, a few songs were 100% Joe but, a lot don't fit and some that "kind of" fit him seem to also fit Harry. I think she started them off about Harry and then maybe wrote Joe into the finish of them. She did it with Lover and now TTPD. Folklore/Evermore were the only ones she mostly used full muses because it was "fictional" and so she had a reason to be more open about the muses.
Also just want to mention in Smallest Man she implies, pretty heavily, he was bad in bed lmao. Yet you want me to believe they "dated" way back when, during his heavy drug use (when it's harder for men to get/keep it up - hell even Halsey had a song that mentions this), hooked up and then kept hooking up over the years and she was pining for a man who she later says was awful in bed? That is not the same muse she has spent over a decade pining for and writing other songs where they hook up - be for real please. 😭 Ain't no one pining for a man who is terrible in bed for a decade.
And I know some people think Guilt As Sin is Harry and it could be a Harry/Matty merge as I think most TTPD songs are, I think it's a bait and switch and she weaves a bit of Matty into the songs to throw off people from Harry. Anyways that song reads two ways for me A) from a Harry stand point she was saying she was pining for him while with Joe and she felt guilty even though nothing happened between them and B) from Matty stand point, I think when they were working together on Midnights her and Joe were in a very bad place and he might've helped talk her into leaving him finally, I believe Matty 100% love bombed the hell outta Taylor and probably "sold her a quick love scheme". He probably mentioned how he'd had a crush on her for years, he'd treat her better/she deserved better blah blah and she maybe started thinking of that and felt guilty because she'd never actually been with Matty previously so how could she be guilty and that's including from the rumors from back in 2014. To me it read she never had slept with the muse at the time and it was all in her head but she was feeling guilty for it and maybe even accused of it. That then makes sense with her calling him bad in bed in Smallest man. She hadn't slept with him previously, then she did last year and was like "Yikes". Again, if that's the case then he can't be the muse she's pined after and had secret affairs with.

Sharing the newly generated AU idea that came to mind while reading fanfics. I’m just desperate for a 2012 tmnt x lmk fic. ANYWAYS.
So it’s canon divergence and basically lbd doesn’t die and the whole convo with MK doesn’t happen, the mayor takes lbd and they leave China and head to nyc to start anew and regain power and control and whatnot and that’s when they see the turtles and lbd is like “I want them” so for like weeks the mayor is observing them and how they act and fight and yk what a spy does and because I love angst I’m throwing Mikey angst in there and yes mikey will sadly be suffering and be the brother that’s picked on and not treated right oh well and Mikey is like out sulking and whatever and that’s when mayor is like “yoo wanna be apart of destiny and show what you can really be?” And Mikey is obvi skeptical cause yk mutants and whatever but then more weeks go by and Mikey is lowkey meeting mayor on the DL but he eventually decides to work with them even though they’re using him LMAOO. So then lbd and mayor have Mikey do a bunch of dangerous missions and shit and Mikey basically becomes the new ‘champion’ yk he’s like that. But the interesting part and when the story gets good is when April has her red flag radar going off and basically follows mikey seeing what he’s up too and def not a good feeling about lbd and mayor and goes and tells the guys the rat daddy about it and yk rat daddy is all wise and knowing and powerful whatever knows about Chinese mythology and is like “lol read jttw it mentions this” and everyone’s like ?? Cause it’s folklore BUT it’s actually true cause yk lbd is literally there and then boom they set off on a mission to go find swk and then yk antics, convincing, trauma bonding, all the funsies that go into protecting the world. And then they team up and see that lbd has basically taken over mikey and they fight blah blah blah and boom mikey is no longer possessed and yes lbd is actually killed this time with mayor and then idk rainbows and happiness or smth
That’s all I hope you all enjoyed my amazing descriptions and abbreviations I just copied it from discord LMAO.

4, 11 & 34 🌹
Thank you so much for the questions! It gave me a chance to reopen my Goodreads and ponder 2022! 🌹
4. What was the last book I read this year?
“Wolf Winter” by Cecelia Ekbäck. Though it was set many centuries ago in Lapland, Sweden & should have really spoken to me because it contained so many of my favorite things, ❄️it didn’t fulfill any of my expectations and was underdeveloped and blah. : (
My second to last book was “Great Expectations “ by Dickens! I enjoyed the atmosphere and exploration of morals and character development thoroughly :)
11. The book most out of my comfort zone?!
“Verity” by Colleen Hoover. This style of writing is not my cup of tea generally and I always gravitate to older historical fiction with established writers vs. modern writing but I was urged by my sister and many others to read this as it was controversial and a page turner. I admit, I couldn’t put it down and it was a compulsory read but the subject matter and descriptions were shocking and disturbing. Very much so a guilty guilty pleasure.
34. What’s a book I’ve recommended most this year?
These two books I recommend over and over.
“The Snow Child” by Eowyn Ivey. One of my favorite books of all time and one that’s perhaps lesser known so I feel I should spread the word. It explores a domestic life in harsh, rugged Alaska with touches of magic and folklore. Beautiful 🤍❄️🤍
“The Book Thief” by Marcus Zusak. It can be read by so many different age groups it makes it easy to recommend!!! Wonderful wonderful book. I love the contrast of light & dark in a novel!

Thoughts on Midnights!? where does it rank in her disography for you? Top songs? Least fave songs?
I read this as a lot more aggressive then I think intended lol
Under cut because who wants to read my ramblings
Listen...its good, like good good. I really do agree its the perfect blend of 1989. Rep, Lover and then Folkevermore.
I genuinely love the entire concept, I love the production on it - I love that she's maybe for the first time, since Back to December, taking more accountability for her role in her sleepless nights. There's a level of vulnerability and also confidence in her writing, in some of the songs that has existed before and it fucking slaps.
Ranking her discography; (not including re-records)
Red
Evermore
Midnights
1989
Speak Now
Folklore
Rep
Lover
Fearless
Debut
Also I want to acknowledge that for the first time in a LONG time she finally chose a perfect first single. She has been struggling with that since Rep. Like post Look What You Made Me Do should've been Delicate.
Post ME! should've been Lover (but actually Cruel Summer)
Post Cardigan should've been August
Post Willow should've been Tis The Damn Season.
She just did not nail singles and second single tracks for years but this time she fucking hit it so right with Anti-Hero. Second single should be Karma or Lavender Haze.
Midnights (3am edition) ranking
Karma
Anti-Hero
Would've, Could've, Should've -
Maroon
Bigger Than The Whole Sky
Glitch
High Infidelity
Vigilante Shit
Sweet Nothing
Dear Reader
Bejeweled
Mastermind
Midnight Rain
Question?
You're on Your Kid
Labyrinth
The Great War
Snow on the Beach
Paris
General ranking of my fave or not fave songs/lyrics;
Most Like/Love
Paris to me the most blah of them all - I doesn't add anything but it also doesn't take anything away. Lyric takeaway, when she sings "somewhere else" all i hear is 'sombrero else' lmao I do not know why.
Karma is a Bitch, but she's not. I love that she frames Karma, which is historically a bad thing, as it giving her only good things in her life. I am obsessed with her brain being able to twist that word and its meaning on its head and creating something so opposite of what we associate with that word. Its fucking genius and I am literally obsessed with her doing that it such a clever way. The song is such a banger, it NEEDS to be the next single.
Would've, Could've, Should've - this song is my Track 5 and I am even going to go as far to say that its her saddest song ever. It surpasses ATW in terms of deep despair and falling apart. There's something so fucking brutal about this song and lines like;
"I would've stayed on my knees And I damn sure would've never danced with the devil at 19 And the God's honest truth is that the pain was heaven"
"I can't let this go, I fight with you in my sleep The wound won't close I keep on waiting for a sign I regret you all the time"
Absolute destruction. I honestly can't even put into words this song. So much of it means jumping into her dating history and the perceptions and assumptions that drive this fandom and I am really not big into doing that. I know she all but confirms once again who this song is about but the only path to go from here is to make giant leaps and assumptions and I never feel comfortable doing that. But for whatever the reason - this is her saddest song, one of her greatest songs and its really my top song off the album but I'll be more respectful and put it third. But I will never let go of this song.
Maroon - this song fucked me up right away, but it takes a beat, you need to get to the chorus before the vibe jumps. My general feeling about this album is that it gives me early era Weeknd vibes, with the oldie beats and vocal synths. Its not fully Trilogy but its pretty name close. Time stamp 2:45 "its a real fucking legacy" is straight up Wicked Game. hits so hard , this song is so good.
Vigilante Shit - this song cuts in the best way. Its very Rep vibe but done in the right way. Whom ever she is talking about (I've seen a few theories from Scooter to Prince Diana (this fandom is wild by the way)), she's standing there watching you bleed and fall apart and she's happy about it and I am happy for her! lol
Sweet Nothings - it took a few listens but this one is beautiful. I HATE the lyric about Hucksters but then she follows it with one of my all time faves;
"To you I can admit That I'm just too soft for all of it"
The way she sings 'soft' softly was such a brilliant choice on her part.
Dear Reader - for me is the better end of album song then Mastermind although they both feel like closing tracks, Dear Reader gives a bit more of herself which ties into the theme of personal nights in her life.
Least Like/Love
Snow on the Beach was the most disappointing just in terms of having Lana on it and barely telling that Lana was on it. Its not a bad song but it doesn't hit the way I so wanted it too.
Paris to me the most blah of them all - I doesn't add anything but it also doesn't take anything away. Lyric takeaway, when she sings "somewhere else" all i hear is 'sombrero else' lmao I do not know why.
Overall I think the album hits everywhere its supposed to. She's brutal honest in both and bad ways, fears and anxiety are full displays. There's something absolutely poetic but fucking heartbreaking in the way she is almost dismissive of her own body dysmorphia. She acknowledges it through a few songs - but almost because she feels like she doesn't have a right to be insecure or unsure about her body because she's rich, white and famous - she just as quickly dismiss' it. It's such a harsh take on something we all realistic suffer from but she has more battles than just her own inner thoughts to contend with. She's really fucking good at being heartbreaking.

So, in some branches of vampire folklore, they can change their appearance, but not permanently - for example, if a vampire got a tattoo or a haircut, they’d wake up the next morning with the hair regrown or the skin unmarked, generally on the theory that supernatural healing doesn’t know the difference between someone stabbing you a bunch when you didn’t ask them to vs. when you did. You’re eternally locked into your appearance, you probably have angsty thoughts about it, blah blah blah.
However. If that’s true, nothing is stopping vampires from getting haircuts. I imagine you’d get haircuts a lot more, actually, because you could literally do a full style for every outfit without having to wait for it to grow back out afterward. Which means there’s a lot of vampire hair getting cut off.
Now, normally vampires in these sorts of universes either turn to ash/dust when they die, or they revert to the level of decay they’d be at if they hadn’t become vampires, which usually means really old ones turn into bone dust or skeletons, younger ones might still be putrid corpses, etc. And usually, decapitated body parts get the same treatment, since once cut off they aren’t “part” of the vampire’s body anymore.
But. Hair doesn’t decay. Or, okay, it does decay, but not nearly as quickly or easily as flesh and even bone. Hair and teeth and nails stick around forever. Wet environments can make them break down more quickly, but hair can literally still be just fine millennia later, which we know because we have mummies who still have theirs.
So my question is this: how much of the world’s excess of waste hair and fingernail clippings is coming from vampires in this sort of fantasy setting? It has to be a ridiculously disproportionate number. They’re probably even contributing extra bones and shit that will freak out archaeologists later whenever they get inconveniently decapitated for a second. Humans are out here contributing a few heads of hair and a few buckets of nails over their lifetimes, but vampires are creating an ENDLESS SUPPLY OF SUPERNATURAL HAIR TUMBLEWEEDS.
This cannot be good for the environment. Also, imagine being the vampire who goes to one of those museums where someone has preserved an ancient lock of hair and being like... what the fuck. That’s part of my body. I’m legally 1/89706th owned by the museum foundation.

Question for you! I see Fae show up a lot in the fantasy genre, and I really love it and want to play with those ideas in some of my own works, but I was wondering — is this something that can be mishandled? I’ve seen some discussion on things to look out for in terms of insensitive portrayal of neurodivergence, but I’ve also just been mulling over the fact that there is a lot of very rich folklore that varies depending on what culture you’re looking at, and that there is potential to disrespect that out of simple fascination for the trope. Being extremely American with no cultural ties to the folklore, I’m just not sure. Is there harm that can be done by sicking solely to the tried and true tropes, or alternatively, by trying to put a new creative spin on those ideas? So sorry if this doesn’t make very much sense, this was harder to put into words that I expected. I was just wondering if you might have any thoughts or advice on this
Oh, this is a nice question for me. Thank you, Nonny :3
Full disclaimer: folklore and mythology, particularly relating to the fae, is my special interest. That doesn't mean I'm an expert in myths and folklore (or the linked history/anthropology). I'm just a person who spends inordinate amounts of time thinking about these things and am exceedingly happy to infodump on the drop of a hat. So, my word isn't law, I'm always happy to hear other opinions, please correct me if I make a mistake etc etc.
"Can you mishandle writing the fae?" is something i have many thoughts on. If you'd asked me this a few years ago, I'd have been all "yes you can, the fae have been appropriated and butchered by popular culture blah blah blah" because I was insufferably anal about things being Correct. But lately, I've come to really love just how vast this – I guess you could call it the popular culture faerie mythos – is. So much of it isn't what a folklore purist would consider correct, but I'm fascinated by how these folkloric figments have evolved and become ingrained in the general psyche nonetheless.
I think writing the fae can become harmful if writers use Welsh/Irish/Scottish folklore as their base without properly researching or without an awareness of the historical context. There's this trend of ignoring centuries of actual history from these countries and instead creating a very warped idealistic fiction. For example, if a writer presents a fantasy world with faeries and says "This is based on Welsh mythology" and then goes on to perpetuate such bunkum as "they all worship a mystical moon goddess" then that's Very Not Good. Similarly, if a writer says "here is my fantasy faery race, they're based on Celtic [Irish] mythology" then I'm going to have some Problems with that, because Celtic mythology and Irish mythology aren't the same thing. (The Celts were an Indo-European people comprised of many cultures and tribes, spread from Ireland to central Europe. While their influence in Ireland is clear, not everything Irish is Celtic and vice versa).
Irish, Welsh and Scottish cultures have historically been persecuted by the English, and that shows in how the English retconned their respective folkloric beliefs to create the British fairy mythos. It's something writers ought to be mindful of but generally aren't imho. This "British" faerie mythos is actually a melting pot of Irish, Scottish, Welsh and Nordic folklore with a healthy dose of medieval romanticism. It's what gave us the popular images of the Seelie and Unseelie ("good" and "bad") faerie courts, wherein the fae are generally more "civilised" (read: like Proper British Victorians) and have humanoid appearances. I don't think that any story which uses this bastardised fairy mythology is automatically bad, but I do get wary when writers plunge into it without giving any thought to why the British fairy image is Like That.
I recently listened to Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke and I was absolutely enthralled. Clarke's fairies are based on the medieval romantic image of them, particularly medieval children's tales. They exist in the realm of Fairy, which is near to Hell, and have a society that falls somewhere between feudalism and the Victorian. What gripped me was how Clarke used the Bastardised British Fairy Lore to create this... almost satirical criticism of "Englishness" and what the English identity actually means (without tiptoeing around xenophobia, arrogance and racism). It's very much based on this bastardised British "folklore" but it works because that's the whole point. I found it thoroughly fascinating and enjoyable and basically haven't stopped thinking about it for a month.
I do get very excited when writers take a new angle with faeries, too! Like, Eoin Colfer's faries in the Artemis Fowl books were so cool. (Bearing in mind it's been ten years since I picked up an Artemis Fowl book, and I never read the whole series so most of what I know I've absorbed via late night Wiki reads and Tumblr osmosis, but anyway—) They live underground, which is a very neat take on the Irish Aos Sí. Irish fae folklore has the faeries living in mounds, as in, every mound in Ireland is its own faerie "court". Colfer's faeries call themselves the People, again, a play on the Irish because their name means People of the Mounds. I think what Colfer did was an extremely neat way of calling on Irish mythology to create a cool new fairy concept.
What you say about being American is an intriguing point in itself, too. I've said before that the American cryptid culture is simply delightful, because although it isn't what one would think of when you talk about folklore, that's exactly what it is. American culture is a melting pot. Which is to say, yes, as an American you won't have a lived cultural experience of, say, Irish folklore and how it impacts modern day life there, but there are elements of it all around you! Think about how in states where it's common to see vast fields of corn, it's also common for tales of corn demons. Sure, maybe that sounds like a weird tale some kids tell to scare one another, but to me it sounds a lot like the feldgiester of Germanic folklore.
American Gods by Neil Gaiman explores this concept that immigrants and settlers brought their own gods and mythological/folkloric creatures with them. I often think about this part of the book that talks about a faerie man who followed an Irishwoman to America because she always left out cream for him. I found that really heartwarming in this way that I can't quite explain. If you're into contemporary fantasy epics, I definitely recommend American Gods!
Sorry, I know this answer is getting quite rambly but I guess I... don't have a solid answer. Like I said, this is very much in my special interest wheelhouse BUT I'm not an expert. When I started out reading more about faeries and their various mythos I consumed a lot of nonsense, and I'm slowly sifting back through and unlearning much of what I took as gospel fact. I don't want to sound like I'm telling you what you can or can't do because that isn't my place (nor is it anyone else's). Really all you can do is listen to people from the cultures you're drawing from and research carefully and critically.
Happy writing! (*^▽^*)

super unpopular opinion but i dont get why taylor is so popular. i have nothing against her but her music seems so average. she's cute but not very charismatic or anything. i don't think she can dance or anything and her voice is not anything special (obviously it's not bad, but it's not anything super crazy either). i feel like her songs are good but compared to a lot of other artists currently she's average in the songwriting department. i just don't understand why she is so special. like if you compare her to beyonce for example there is such a drastic difference in almost every way. im genuinely not trying to be a bitch but i feel like i'm just missing what everyone else can see in her. i really used to like her old music but her newer music has been so blah and generic. i know you like taylor so maybe you could help me see the appeal.
I’m making it a mission to stop comparing artists because none of them are the same. Taylor and Beyoncé are not the same. Taylor could never make Lemonade just like Beyoncé could never make Folklore. Doesn’t mean one is better than the other. Both have their own strengths in the business with their own artistic vision. We can have room for multiple successful artists .

Michael Sheen talks about his first meeting with Neil Gaiman
I’ve made a script from David Tennant’s podcast
David: Tell me about Neil Gaiman then.
Michael: This is what brought us together. The new love story for the 21 c. When I went to drama school there was a guy called Harry Turner in my year. Within a first few weeks we’re doing something, I mean a drink or whatever, and he said to me “do you read comic books?” And I said “no”. I mean this was 1988-89.. so it was.. now I know that it was a period of time when big change, transformation going on through comic books. Rather then it being sort of just super heroes, Batman and Superman. There was this whole new era of generation of writers like Grant Morrison. And starting to address different kind of subjects through the comic book medium so it wasn’t superheroes, it was all kind of stuff going on. Really fascinating stuff, and I was totally unaware of this.
And so this guy Harry said to me “do you read them”? And I said “no”. And he went like: ok, here’s the Watchmen by Alan Moore, here’s Swamp Thing, here’s Hell Blazer, and here’s Sandman. And Sandman was Neil Gaiman’s kind of big series, sort of point his name on the map.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And I read all those, and I was just blown away by all of them. But particularly the Sandman stories cause he was sort drawing on mythology, fairy tales, folklore, and philosophy, and Shakespeare and all kinds of stuff were being kind of mixed up in the story. And I absolutely loved that. So I became a big fan of Neil, started reading everything by him, and then fairly shortly after that within six month or a year Good Omens the book came out which Neil wrote with Terry Pratchett. And so I got the book, cause I was obviously a big fan of Neil by this point, so I read it, loved it, then started reading Terry Pratchett’s stuff as well cause I didn’t know his stuff before then. And then spent years and years and years just, you know, being a huge fan of both of them. And then eventually, you know, I’ve done films like Underworld films, and doing Twilight films... and I think it was one of the Twilight films. There was a lot of veeery snooty interviews that happened, where people who considered themselves well above talking about things like Twilight: we’re having to interview, you know, me, and weirdly coming out it from the attitude of “clearly this is below you as well”. Weirdly thinking I’m gonna go: yeah, fine, Twilight... And I just used to go: you know what? Some one the greatest writing of the last 50 to 100 years is happened in science fiction, or fantasy. I mean like Philip K. Dick is one of my favorite writers of all time. In fact the production of Hamlet I did was mainly influenced by Philip K. Dick. And you know Ursula le Guin, Asimov... All this amazing people, and I talked about Neil as well, went off a bit of a rant... the interview came out, bubble. About six month later maybe: knock on the door, open the door - delivery of a big box. Interesting... Open the box - a card on the top of the box, I opened the card, it says
From one fan to another.
Neil Gaiman
And inside the box like first editions of Neil’s stuff, and all kinds of interesting things by Neil. And he just sent this stuff to me.
Tumblr media
David: You’ve never met him.
Michael: Never met him. He’d read the interview, or someone’d let him know about this interview where I sang his praises, stood up for him and the people who are working within sort of genre... And he just got in touch.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We met up for the first time, I was in Los Angeles when he came to LA, and he said “I take you for a meal”. I was like “alright”. He said, “you wanna go somewhere posh or somewhere interesting”, and I said, “lets go somewhere interesting” he said “right I’m gonna take you to this restaurant which is called the Hump, and it’s at Santa Monica airport”. And its a sushi restaurant. I was like alright, ok. I had a mini at that time,we drive off to the Santa Monica airport and this restaurant was right on the tarmac. There was nobody else there, we got there quite early, and you watching the planes landing on Santa Monica airport. It was like extraordinary! And the chef comes out, Neil says “just bring whatever you want, chef’s choice”. I have never eaten sushi before, and we set this incredible meal when they keep bringing these, you know, dishes, and they say “this is blah blah blah, just use a little bit of soy sauce, whatever”, you know, “this is eel”... and this was one dish they brought to us they didn’t say what it was. It was like mystery dish. And yet it delicious. Few more people started coming at the restaurant at that time, I said “Neil, I can’t eat anymore, I have to stop now, this is great but” he went “ok we’ll ask for the bill in a minute”, and then the door opens, and some very official people come in. And it was the FEDs. And the FEDs and we knew cause there were jackets on that said part of the federal bureau or whatever, and about six of them coming. One goes behind the counter, two go into the kitchen, one goes to the back. With like guns on and stuff, and me and Neil were like “what on Earth is going on??” And then eventually one guy said: ladies and gentlemen if you haven’t ordered already, please leave; if you’re still eating your meal, please finish up, pay your bill, leave. And we were like “oh my god we’re poisoned?? is this some terrible thing in them?” So we sort of finished, paid our bill, and then all the kitchen staff walked abroad it, and the head chef was there, the guy who was bringing us dishes. He’s in tears, and he says to Neil “ I’m so sorry”, apologizes to Neil, and we leave. And we have no idea what happened.
David: But you’re assuming it’s a mystery dish.
Michael: Well, we’re assuming... it cant be poisonous, that terrible terrible thing! So the next day was the Oscars which is why Neil was in town, cause Coraline had been nominated for Oscar. Best documentary that year was one by The Cove... which was by a team of people who had come across dolphins being killed, I think. And turns out what was happening in this restaurant was they were having illegal endangered species flown in to the airport, and then being brought round the back of the restaurant into the kitchen. We had eaten whale. Endangered species whale. That was the mystery dish they didn’t say what it was. And the team behind The Cove were behind this thing, and they took them down that night we were there.
David: That’s extraordinary
Michael: for month me and Neil were like “have you heard anything - no I’ve not”, and then we heard it was something to do with a coven, eventually, we found out that they were all arrested, the restaurant was shut down, and... we had eaten whale that night.
Tumblr media
David: That was your first meeting with Neil Gaiman.
Michael: That was my first meeting. And also in a drive home that night from that restaurant he said (and we were in my mini) “have you found the secret compartment” i said “what are you talking about?” Such a Neil Gaiman thing to say! Secret compartment. “Yeah, each of man has got a secret compartments” I said “I had no idea it’s secret”, and he pressed a little button, and a thing opened up. And it was a secret compartment in my own car that Neil Gaiman showed me.
David: Was there anything inside it?
Michael: Yeah, there was a little man and he jumped out and went hello! Erm, no, there was nothing in there. There was afterwards cause I started putting...
David: Sure, That’s a very Neil Gaiman story. All of that is such a Neil Gaiman story
Michael: That’s how it began, yeah.

Cursed: Season One: Review and Thoughts
I binged this show in two days! I didn’t expect it to be so good, but it was pretty good. I’ll just say right now if you haven’t finished or seen this show, there will most likely be spoilers in the following words to come!
Normally, with stuff that is set in a mythical/medieval land, it is hit or miss with me. But I like the bit of twist they’ve done with the Arthur and his Knights story and made the sword have a Queen instead. However, there were moments that I just guessed about what was going to happen because they were all too obvious. But I also tend to be good when it comes to anticipating the ending to things.
Tumblr media
Hands down, I will say that Squirrel (Percival) and The Weeping Monk (Lancelot) were my favorite characters. I loved The Weeping Monk, mostly because he is played by Daniel Sharman, but from the first moment I saw him on screen, I knew that there was more to the antagonist actions we were seeing.....I find that I tend to get attached to the emotionally tortured and troubled characters... And with Squirrel, he is adorable, he reminds me of a little golden retriever puppy! And the actor, Billy Jenkins, is really good at acting for being so young. That one scene with The Green Knight had me feeling so bad for the little guy. And from the moment these two characters met, I knew that they’d be an ideal BrOTP.
Obvious moments in the storyline, I hate them, but mostly I hate my brain because it’s my own fault for ruining it for me. I guessed well in advance that Nimue’s village was going to be destroyed and all her loved ones killed. I guessed moments before it was revealed that Merlin was her father. I guessed on a slowly developing friendship between Squirrel and Lancelot. Now, with all of this, there wasn’t much that gave it away, they’re just rationalizations I made: ---Every story needs an action that puts the main character on a quest of some sort so something bad had to happen to Nimue for her to become the Fey Queen that we see at the end.  ---Despite being a drunk and a human, Merlin is Nimue’s father. This was easy to see mostly when you see Nimue’s “father”--they don’t look anything alike. And them finally meeting would make it “oh, so dramatic.” Sorry, but no. ---Right away, I noticed that The Weeping Monk does not hurt children despite the fact that the rest of the Red Brotherhood does. And the moment when he ends up tricking Squirrel out of his hiding spot just had me thinking--yeah, these two are going to become pals. I can feel it.
Tumblr media
The romance between Nimue and Arthur was boring, extremely boring. Pym and her man Dof had more chemistry than those two.  (Side note: I will give credit in the fact that Arthur and Morgana are POC; normally whenever you hear about Arthur and the Knights blah, blah, blah, he’s often portrayed as Caucasian and blond.) But in general, I find that most television shows and movies think they all need to have at least one sex scene.... No, they don’t. And if you must include a sex scene in, can you at least show more of the man? I find in many movies and television shows, they show way more o the female than the male, and honestly, I don’t want to stare at some lady’s bosom because I got my own thank you very much. But, now that I think on it, the world of directing and producing seems to be primarily a man’s world....we need to change that in my opinion.
For future seasons, if a season two does come about sometime soon, I want to see more of Pym. I loved her character and she seems like she has a fighting spirit, so I would like to see that grow and develop. I want to see what happens with Morgana being “Death” or the “Grim Reaper” being; does that prevent her from finding love again after Celia? Also, the little, crazy bitch Iris, I want to see what happens with her and what she wants to do in regards to Nimue and the fey people. I would also like to see more screen time for Lancelot and Squirrel and I want to see more of the fey people, and all the different types of few people. I felt like the ones we did see were the satyrs (is that the correct word?) or fawn-like people, which is fine, but there seemed like other interesting types too. Anyways, if I had to rate this, I’d say, out of five stars, I’d give CURSED a solid 3.5/5. Definitely worth a watch and if you are a fan of Daniel Sharman, you won’t be disappointed in his character. And if you are a fan of faerie folklore or things set in the medieval times, than this is also a good watch too.

One thing that's important to me about magic in storytelling is that it feels plausible and natural. What gets my goat with arcane magic is that it's very zip-zap-boing, which is to say wacky and trademark of the general notion of superpowers if it is not narrated in a way that makes it feel like a mystical yet natural part of the world, and is kind of why divine magic may be a favourite of mine.
Divine magic has theumatic roots in real world mythology and folklore. Because of this, arcane magic has traditionally been portrayed as the antithesis of this notion, and as such the arcane feels flashy and less well rooted (just in my opinion) with the classical adventure story. In fairy tales the wizards and other magicians would manipulate the natural world a lot more than current d&d give a credit for, and spells like mage hand, most evocation magic, and leomund's tiny hut seem to be, while original and inventive, stepping away from the mystery and poetic heart of what magic can be when themes and established cause are not executed well or go unused.
For example, Brennan Lee Mulligan of Dimension 20, portrays wild-magic sorcerer Pete's magic not in the traditional "Oh your powers are chaotic and spawn from limbo, a realm of elemental chaos yada yada". He instead explains that Pete's magic is granted by the realm of dreaming, and narrates each spell in accordance to how it could relate to dreams. For example fire is not just "okay so you throw a firebolt and it hits him for blah damage". He gets Pete's (Ally) player to give an idea of what Pete may be feeling and cast spells based off that (lovely and sorcery), and the fire is described as the warm fire of a hearth from the dreams of a child, or the roaring fire of a guy fawkes, all pulled from the land of dreaming. Arcane zip-zap-boing is given a plausible and natural basis, the themes of which are integrally tied to campaign, the notions of dreams and hopes and how they can be manifested in the real world.
So when your warlock next casts witchbolt or eldritch blast, remember where you want their magic to come from, how your casting ability (int, wis, cha) contributes to the spell, and what the components might be. Adding that mysticism and wonder is what grips and inspires the players to be bolder with their spells and their use of magic. Otherwise you're just a ridiculously powerful X-man mutant. It inspires creativity and really hooks them so they feel their effect of their powers on the world and it can lead to some beautiful imagery. .

At least you can stay here while you figure stuff out.
The boys all nod. "That should be good, yeah," Ross says. "You all can stay here as long as you like, by the way. No pressure to yeet away to Ireland and see Pookas." Then he pulls out his phone, balancing the controller on his thigh. "That reminds me, I was going to google Pookas. Jackie, go to 123Movies on my bookmarked pages and put on Thor Ragnarok. I need to see my man Tom Hiddleston."
Jackie mock pouts, slumping back in the couch. ""Your man Tom Hiddleston." No, I see how it is. I'm not a rich and famous actor who plays one of the coolest characters in the world, I see. I see how it is."
"Shut up and go watch the Parklife music video again, Damon Albarn stannie," Ross giggles, and even Jameson laughs when Jackie punches his arm jokingly.
They're then silent again. "Ok," Ross says after a moment. "The Pooka, which apparently is Irish for spirit or ghost, is a creature of Celtic folklore that are known to be bringers of either good or bad fortune. Said to be shape changers... Turn into horses, goats, cats, dogs, and hares." He looks up, eyes sparkling. "D'you think if I'm real nice to Anti, he'll turn into a hare?"
"No," Jameson signs flatly, just as Jackie says "We can try!" They all laugh, and the Xbox pings as the page starts to load up. Ross keeps reading.
"They may also take a human form, which may have animal features such as ears or a tail," he reads off. "Blah, blah, blah, counterparts in Northwest Europe, blah, blah... Pookas can be menacing and evil minded, yep, got that down... They like mischief and turn into horses to take humans for rides and generally be awful to them. Apparently... have a weakness for sharp spurs, silver, and cold iron." He winces. "Yeouch. Sorry, Anti."

🌻 Folklore and evermore is my fav as I love that type of music. Red is a close one too especially after the rerecord.
I'm in college! I just start the new semester, its only the 3rd week but I'm already 😵 looking at the assessment list for all classes. Yeah,, end of semester is usually a a mess😖 Last semester, my lectures decided to give assignments during the last minutes. I had to do 4 classes assignments in just 3 week jajssjjaaksk
Hmm..for me it depends, sometime I binge sometime I don't. Ooh, that some nice choice! I think the only ufotable anime I know is kny? The art/animation is gorgeous even though I don't watch it.
My choice is also ohshc! It'll be cool if they have a furuba treatment. Noragami! I watched s1 idk why I didn't watch s2 even though I enjoy the s1. I heard that s2 promised neverland is pretty bad. Watched s1 but didn't enjoy it that much to watch the sequel.
Do you follow the 3 episode rule? And do you have anime that you don't like/enjoy but still watch for specific reason? (like maybe bcs of VA or a character)
Also!! the mxtx novels are already out right? youtube recs me an unboxing video of the novel and I'm jealous 🤧 I'm still waiting for my bookstore to be updated ~
oh nice!!!☺️
wow, that sounds intense!!! good luck with everything you have to do!o(≧▽≦)o i'm in med school myself, but what are you studying?? and do you like it so far?
yeahhhh bingeing takes a lot of energy lol, don't always have it. yeah, the main one i know is kny!!! the animation is fucking stellar; i'm always amazed at what they can do. ufotable also produced the fate/stay night series. the animation for that is definitely some of the best i've ever seen, but the actual story is kinda blah (i also don't like the protagonist and that doesn't help). i still need to watch the second and third heaven's feel movies tho,,,,
IKR????? ohshc my beloved! s2 of noragami was excellent! mmmm that was a good move on your part in regards to tpn lmao
three episode rule as in i watch three eps of an anime before deciding if i want to continue or drop it??? ah. no. no, i do not do that. i can see the wisdom in that but i generally don't have the patience savfkbg. there's even been times i cut out of the anime i'm watching before the first episode is even over. i think the worst i've been is for this one anime i tried to watch and i couldn't make it past the op bc the animation was so unappealing. there's just so much anime, you know? subjecting myself to mediocrity for the hope it'll get better seems pointless. but anyway, i digress. what about you???
asdbaksg i really just do not watch anime i don't like, VA's i like or no. tbh i tend to run into them often enough without trying as it is that it hadn't really occurred to me. what anime have you seen bc of this?
yessssss i believe they are!!! so beautiful!!! i've been determined not to buy them but i could absolutely cave at like 3am and buy $60 worth of mxtx novels at once. the fan translation for svsss was funky in some aspects so i suppose i'm curious about the official version. oooooooh i hope your bookstore updates soon!!! so exciting!💕

Gather round, all who would listen; I have a tale to tell. A tale of warriors and kings, and slightly shonky first-party action games that never quite took off in the early 2000s. This is the tale of The Mark of Kri, and it begins, as all good tales do, with a man walking into a bar. Of course this is no ordinary man - he's the size of a killer whale and has a raven perched on his shoulder. His name is Rau Utu, a good name for a great and noble warrior. He's after a drink and a fight, in any particular order. Luckily, a helpful barman points him in the direction of a nearby bandit camp, and Rau grabs his sword and bird, setting off on a mission that will end in bloodshed, murder and demigodhood. Again, in no particular order.
Much like the Disney movie Moana (which almost certainly took some inspiration from the game), Kri welds Polynesian folklore to a road trip backbone, telling a classic hero's journey story, albeit one with a lot more bloodshed than you'd expect. Mark of Kri is a non-stop murder spree, and while its art style suggests cartoon fun, it's pure Lone Wolf and Cub arterial spurting violence in the gameplay. It's the Pretzel Flipz of the double-A game world, a strange flavour combination that excites the tastebuds while confounding the brain. Of course such an approach was bound to generate some controversy amongst parents, and the game also faced a fierce cultural appropriation backlash in the Māori community, who pointed out that the badass tribal tattoo that Rau sported was actually a moko, a tattoo traditionally worn by Māori women.
Even his bulk is an unusual trait in the double-A world, where heroes tend to be lithe and muscular. But this bulk sells the action superbly - when clearing out enemy strongholds you really believe it when he throws an enemy to the ground and bloodily drives his sword through their face, or casually shish kabobs a baddie to the wall. You'll be doing a lot of that incidentally, as the game is built on the three classic double-A game pillars - combat, stealth and lashings of lackluster switch pulling. The switch pulling is as dull as you'd expect it to be. Pull a lever, drop a ladder, drink a shot, blah blah blah. But the combat and stealth? Well, that's a different story.

Saint Necessarily So
Happy Folklore Thursday! Have you made your plans to come to our BIG EXCITING BOOK LAUNCHES in LONDON and BATH yet? Brother Bernard and Sister Sal can't wait to see you there!
Tumblr media
Just a brief blog this week, as stories of those Christian oddballs some call SAINTS are one of the things we have largely avoided in the book. From our own experiences wading through books of British lore, amid all the ghost stories and big black spectral hounds and identikit narratives, there are just too many stories of 'saints', in every corner of the country, and they're nearly all along the same lines – the usual stuff, some believer in the new religion is being chased by pagans, their head gets cut off, a sacred spring appears, blah blah blah. With some exceptions, it's generally uninspiring stuff invented to cover up the desecration of existing communities in the name of the trendy Christ-based religion which took hold in Britain from the mid-first millennium to…, well, sometime before now. Tales of Britain is partly about peeling away all the Christian and Puritan distortion in our national treasury of folklore, so we're promoting saintless stories as much as possible, making it clear that Britain has had its own culture and lore long before Rome even invaded Judea, let alone the invention of the Christianity business.
Tumblr media
And yet, despite all this, our one and only saint-based story has always hidden in plain sight, as the one excerpt given to the world long before the book was in shops – CADOC & THE MOUSE. Thankfully this tale is specifically about Cadoc's intelligence and dislike of bad teaching, and so is anything but a typical 'saint' story. We also enjoyed giving the tale a go on Cerys Matthews' 6music show the other week!
Tumblr media
Coed Fenni Fach, site of the mysterious grain store Cadoc's mouse friend uncovered...
There is also our Xmas story surrounding St Augustine, THE LAST YULE, but A) That's not in this edition of the book, and B) It's not Xmas, so never mind, eh?
We dearly hope you're enjoying the book, please do remember that online reviews really help further our campaign – and if you're ever near a bookshop, do take a moment to ask if they have it – if the answer is now, any decent bookshop ownder will rapidly order some in if they only know the book exists. This is up to all of us... we can bring British folktales back to life again, together!
See you a week next Monday, or a fortnight Saturday...?
