Is friends with Frankenstein's monster
Never turns into anything other than a bat

Interview With a Writer
Tumblr media
Thank you @st-eve-barnes for going over your Saltburn series with me! Just a reminder, you can view volume 1 & 2 of my ongoing series Interview With a Writer, where these talented individuals allow me to pick their brains over the brilliance behind their writing!
Tumblr media
Name: st-eve-barnes
Story: Leverage
Paring: Michael Gavey x Female!Reader
WARNINGS: 18+ for explicit content and language. Kissing, oral sex (male receiving), dry humping, hand job, fingering, p in v sex. First kiss and loss of virginity. Experienced reader. Enemies to lovers vibes.
So, when did you start writing?
I guess I have to say as a teenager, though I never shared anything I wrote back then. I still have the notebooks I used to drabble in (in Dutch), it wasn’t very good at all but I guess even back then I had that need to be creative and make my own stories.
I officially started writing fanfic in 2013. I watched Thor the Dark World, fell in love with Loki, made a Tumblr and a whole new world opened. After a few months of reading fanfic, I started writing my own. Again, it wasn’t very good at all but even my bad stories slowly started to find an audience on here, so I stuck with it.
Loki is amazing, just Aemond energy in a different font.
He truly is! I've written different characters since, but the moment I saw Aemond on screen I was transported back to the first time I saw Loki. His intensity, that quiet threat like you don't know what he's going to do next, combined with this, "I was made to be king but my stupid brother is the chosen one."
And a certain sadness, of course. We know they're the villains, but we understand them in a way and can feel their pain. And they are sexy as hell of course ;)
Tumblr media
Where did the plot for Leverage come from?
Okay, so first of all, I am someone who never plans an entire plot when I start a fic. I am very much a "make it up as I go along" writer. I start with an idea and a dynamic I want to write between two characters and then I build from there.
For this one I wanted Reader and Michael to have a common goal and a common enemy, something that would push these two different characters to want to work together. I wanted the enemies to lovers vibe but soft. Like, you can tell very early on in the fic that they have empathy for each other. When Reader is crying, Michael softens up easily, and when she sees Michael being vulnerable about not being able to get girls, she feels for him as well.
Their personalities will still clash even after that, but you can (hopefully) feel the connection between them as well. I wanted Ben's threat to loom over them for the entire fic but also never make it the main plot point in every chapter. The main plot for me here was how Michael and Reader could help each other change and grow, and then either accept that change or turn away from it.
Was there anything in specific that inspired your Reader portrayal?
No, not really, I think. I wanted to make her independent and confident, but also a little bit lonely, all traits you can also find in Michael. And anything else, as usual, I make up as I go along. I get to know the characters as I write them and often I'm surprised where they take me. In this fic I think it was Michael who surprised me the most though, he really turned out different than I initially had planned.
Explain your interpretation of Michael. What drives him? How did he differ from what you originally had in mind?
Salburn didn't give us much to work with, and I actually love that because it gives us so much freedom to play with the character.
I went with what the movie did give us: Michael's obvious hatred for the popular privileged kids. It's the reason he initially hates Reader, but warms up to her when he learns that she is actually working for her place at Oxford and she is not a real part of Ben's group. I think he is driven to help her purely because of that common enemy in the beginning.
Then he gets to know her a little and the promise of sex comes into play, which he definitely doesn't say no to. What surprised me in writing him is that I initially planned on writing him as a sub throughout the entire fic, but then half way in the tables started turning and he started taking over control a bit (of the Reader and me as well apparently!). And then suddenly it made complete sense to write him that way, because he would be that overeager student who wants to do well and who does the homework to get it exactly right, it doesn't matter whether it's math or sex, he wants to show how good and smart he is.
Him just accepting his feelings for her so calmly was also something I didn't plan, but just sort of happened as I was writing.
My initial plans there was going to be a big fight between her and Michael right before they would call things off. He would force her to admit her feelings and the sex would turn quite rough; Michael just being Michael and saying a lot of wrong things to her that would eventually shut her down completely. But I never wrote that scene and by the time I got there in the story it didn't seem to fit their characters anymore and it also seemed too heavy for this fic so I let go of that idea.
Tumblr media
Do you feel your Reader and Michael complement one another?
I definitely think they complement each other, but I also think they are quite alike in many ways. As I said before, they are both quite confident in different ways and insecure in others.
I do think they complement each other perfectly with Michael being more book smart and focused, while Reader is (a lot) better with people and social skills. I think them being together changes them both for the better cause they can learn from each other's personalities and bring out the best out in each other (but also the worst, of course).
Let's say that in their future they definitely learn to focus on bringing out the best and not the worst in each other ;)
Do you think you'll ever continue their story?
Never say never, but there's no plans to write more for them for now. I don't think I've written many sequels over the years, but I love writing different ideas and dynamics between two characters and once they are together, it's like "my work here is done."
Do you have a personal favorite story (on ao3 or Tumblr) you'd like to share?
My absolute favorite story is from a previous fandom that I'm not in anymore, but I have to share that one as it is the single most beautiful thing I've ever read. It was the fic that pulled me into the fandom. It's a Stucky story and it's called Not Easily Conquered, known as NEC in the fandom.
It will crush your soul and heal you and I will give anyone the same advice I got before I read it for the first time: be prepared because this one will hurt. I cried for like a week after I read it and I don't cry easily so this one should come with a warning. But it is absolutely worth it!
Tumblr media
Do you have another story in the works?
The only thing I'm working on right now is a Felix Catton x Reader story called Pretty Little Liars. Two chapters have been posted and I'm working on the next ones, but it may be a while as life has been a bit full on here lately.
Would you like to share a snippet of what's to come?
“I think he has a little crush on you,” you stated while Felix opened the door to his room and let you step inside first. Felix shook his head but the little blush on his cheeks didn’t go unnoticed by you. “It’s not like that,” he denied, “He’s just…a bit lost and I’m trying to be his friend.” “You sure that’s all he wants?” “Yeah,” he laughed, “Ollie doesn’t want me, he just wants to be like me.” “If you say so,” you sighed, not convinced. Felix grabbed you by the shoulders and pushed you down to sit on the side of his bed, leaning forward to look into your eyes, “Hey, come on, don’t ruin this by becoming jealous.” “I’m not jealous, I’m…concerned.” That wasn’t a lie. Jealousy was never a factor, you knew right from the start that Felix would never truly be yours, you would always have to share him with the rest of the world. And you always accepted that. But the idea of sharing him with Oliver somehow made your blood boil. Felix kneeled down in front of you, eyes locking with yours as his gaze darkened and he smiled that irresistible smile of his. “Now, did you come up here to chat about Ollie, or to get your pussy eaten, hmm? Cause I can’t do both at the same time.” His lips connected with your knee, kissing your skin softly and you bit your lip and sighed deeply, “Fine, I’ll shut up.”

ive decided to do red dead redemption 2 updates as i play with my gamer bestie like i did for tlou because i think im funny.
*me watching arthur morgan sling an entire grown man over his shoulders and carry him with ease* "oh" *sighing hard through his nose* "well i can see we're on two different wavelengths with this game"
*repeatedly knocking into the npcs with my horse so they yell at me* "you will get arrested if you just run people over, that is murder." “murder. they’re fine don’t be so dramatic”
“what did you do when you first got into the open world?” “oh i collected horses”
*coming back into the room after being away for 2 minutes* “what-what are you doing? I thought you were killing that bear?” “well it killed me so im helping this woman instead. did you do this part?” “im pretty sure i just killed her”
*shoots guy that made us chase him down for money* “oh who’s above killing people now?” “he shouldn’t have annoyed me so much” “i shouldn’t have let you play the joel simulator first you’re getting too ruthless”
*annoyed im refusing to go to camp or play the main story* “you can’t just do all the side quests” “i like helping people and im afraid of dutch”
*accidentally shoots the hotel manager* “i don’t know how you manage to be so bad at this”
*blindly following map to a waypoint* “maybe you should slow down-” *goes flying over a cliff and dies* *sighs* “you went up a huge ass mountain and didn’t think there might be something you could fall off?” “i think we’re good but if my horse is dead this is the start of my villain origin story”

Did you check out the first issue of the new Ultimate Spider-Man? I'd be curious to see your thoughts
Tumblr media
I was planning on letting it pass by me, zen-like. I kind of... disapprove of the entire concept. The more redundant universes Marvel creates (note that I say redundant, in that I like some AUs with recognizably different heroes and story lines) the more it approaches a DC-like level of story fragmentation, where nothing has to matter and everything runs on vibes. Every new restart survives an even shorter amount of time. It's a death spiral.
But alright. I may not know who Hickman is but some other people seem to like him. I'm Charlie Brown, the new title is a football, here's some of the whistling my foot makes as it flies through the air.
First off a disclaimer: comics are into longform storytelling these days, so almost nothing happens in this issue by design. This is a setup, not a story. I can point out some pettier dislikes, but I can't know what might turn out well yet.
I get that this is going to tie in to the Maker, but calling this USM is a bogus decision that is going to cause so much confusion down the line. It's like they didn't want to admit they were setting up yet a third story. See above grouch about redundant universes.
Uncle Ben being alive instead of Aunt May is a hell of a decision. But I like Hell Of A Decisions if they're pulled off with confidence. I miss og USM's ponytailed gentle old hippie Uncle Ben, I admit. He had a surprising amount of characterization, which I always liked about that series.
I... do not get... why they are homewrecking Robbie + JJJ for Ben. Like, I'm kind of offended on Robbie's behalf. og USM already put some of Robbie's plotlines into Ben--I mean, Ben Urich's hands, but this is more based on 616, isn't it? Robertson's personal moral compass and how that interacts with his job and his safety and his journalistic ethics AND his relationship with Jameson's short-sighted tendencies have been the core of his character for 60 years. Could we not think of something new for Uncle Ben to be doing instead of overwriting an existing character relationship and adding next to nothing to it? And Robbie's there and just kind of fine with the Kingpin's proposal as far as we see so far. This is probably my biggest complaint.
The kids could be an interesting element, but we don't really see any of that yet so it's purely potential.
The Harry fans seem to like this new Harold and his visual design so far. I suppose he's not fully flavorless but the flavor that is there is like. Salt and pepper.
MJ could stand to look older and have more characterization but that is not an original observation. Wait, she's definitely based off her 616 self and not her USM self isn't she? God why DID they call this USM, this is a structural publishing nightmare
The Goblin design is what people think the Raimi goblin costume was, which is not exactly a compliment. Also I *know* I'm the Goblin Fan but are there, really no other villains you could think of to open with? No? Is this the only plot point that's ever going to get adapted over and over again? Maybe it will be good and I'll be glad, I think! And then imagine Charlie Brown and the football again.
Tumblr media
Another thing that really got me was the churning camera angles on some of the simplest scenes here. I respect the dutch angle hustle, Chechetto, but if I'm feeling seasick while trying to follow a scene where people have a conversation while sitting down then you might want to rethink your strategy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To misquote Roger Ebert for a second, "the penciler has learned from better comics that artists sometimes tilt their panels, but it seems he has not learned why."

So IDK if any of you are interested, but I felt the need to write a sort of DVD commentary for Adding on Weight talking about easter eggs and inspirations.
General
Working title was "Die a Boring Death" but I decided that it didn't make sense past chapter 5.
I spent a lot of time trying to find something about longing, about wanting someone to want something. About wanting to be wanted, or wanting in general. I never found it and I'm not sure I like the title I landed on.
(The song after the chapter is where the title is from.)
Chapter 1: Dial Drunk, Noah Kahan
I moved the timeline of the book because I wanted everyone to have more time to feel consequences. Kaz gets happy years before he gets imprisoned. Matthias is in Hellgate for longer. Everyone has a long enough time to actually work through the grief because I don't have to write YA where they're 17 years old.
Sir was originally 2 characters; a heavy and a talky guy. By the time I got to chapter 5 and knew what was going to happen when Kaz escaped, I knew I had to cut them to one. So we lost the talky guy and Sir just became more odious.
Kaz eats an apple because this is his Kobyashi Maru
The assignment was originally to wipe out the principal of the debt. Once I did math, that wasn't going to be near enough of an impetus.
The chef Kaz works for is named Kooken, which is just the Dutch word for "cook"
Chapter 2: Afraid of Heights, boygenuis
The party was not the original idea here, at the point of writing this chapter I didn't have the inciting crime totally figured out (originally Jordie just lost money he was carrying, but that wasn't good enough later to imprison and brutalize Kaz) and so I had this idea that he'd been breaking into the office of the brothel and doing like… audits that got him attention. And Pekka was going to send him to a Mercher's home to get their financial information. I scrapped that when I decided Pekka was going to be our major villain.
The entire point of this chapter was to get Kaz in eyeliner
No actually, the idea of Kaz being forced to sit on Pekka's lap and count cards came extremely early in the process, as did the idea of it being where Inej sees the potential. Originally she was going to be a Dreg lieutenant but I didn't want to have to deal with Per Haskell, so I gave her a gang of her own.
The tattoo knife thing would absolutely not work in reality.
Card counting is not that reliable.
The tray of glasses was a very late addition to the story, but I fell in love with the idea of Kaz having glass stuck in him that no one will help him with but Nina.
I always think the trope of a person sitting in the shadows waiting for another person is ridiculous because it implies that they broke in and sat in the dark for hours waiting. Doing fuck all. I still made Inej do it.
Chapter 3: Afraid of Heights, boygenuis
The chapter that boygenuis wrote, this whole thing is a mix between revolution 0 and afraid of heights
I just want to know/who broke your nose/figure out where they live/so I can kick their teeth in
There's been a run of fires downtown/On half-built construction sites/I know you never liked a townhouse/I've seen you climb a crane at night/If they ever catch you at it/I know you'd want me to be proud/That you took a rich man's dream/And brought it with you on your way down
Kaz thinks the Jam Tart House is a stupid name because I do. Who names a house that? But it's in the book!
They're drinking fantasy Strongbow at the night market.
Kaz crawling into Inej's bed is, to me, the saddest scene of this entire fic.
Chapter 4: Stick Season, Noah Kahan
A deck of cards and book of tricks gets left in Kaz's room, but he doesn't stop to think about who left them there. This is Inej, wanting him to want things.
"Good days" here is lying in wait for Jesper's question six chapters later.
The client Kaz kills was an early idea, that he'd be set off by the word "daddy". Mostly because I am.
The Floating Place is pure dissociation. Brought to you by my mental illnesses.
"So break me. Or buy me." is one of my favorite lines.
Kaz makes more than $1,200 a night. At the end of 8 years, assuming no days off and no fines, he would have made $3,504,000. He has paid off his principal 54 times.
We learn later that his debt is held at 500% interest, which means at the end of 8 years with 0 payments he would have owed $221,709,240,000.
Kaz is getting fucked by the interest.
"Young, dumb, and down for everything" was originally "young, dumb, and full of come" but I couldn't bring myself to put that in a story.
Inej's story changed a few times, mostly her age at the time of the raid. At first she was 14 when it happened, but I needed more time for her father to drink himself to death and her to hunt down slavers before getting to Ketterdam. So now I imagine she left Ravka on her mission around 14.
Chapter 5: Afraid of Heights, boygenuis
Kaz's birthday is canonically in December or January, so I believe my exact idea for this scene was December 20. That's my mom's birthday.
Kaz's Kaelish is actually the gaelic for "you are an excellent lover"
Jesper's comment about using the curtains to hang youself is due to the way Margret Atwood describes Offred's room in the Handmaid's Tale.
Getting them in year four would mean Kaz was 17, so after the leg, which he refers to as "breaking him beyond repair" later.
Kaz doesn't put on shoes because I wasn't sure he would own a pair. Why would he?
The Sir fight scene was originally much shorter, but I liked the idea of Kaz getting a little beat up.
I kinda regret killing Sir here. I should have done it after chapter 8, it would have meant more to the audience.
""No," he says. "I'm right here." was originally the last line of the story.
And then she's gone/And then he's alone is a reference to Come From Away and you can pry it from my cold, dead hands.
Kaz hiding under the bed is inspired by the one scene in The Haunting of Hill House that I have never watched, where the Tall Man comes for his hat.
Inej brings coffee because Kaz wished for coffee in chapter 1 as a luxury he didn't get. She doesn't know it, but I do.
Chapter 6: Harmony Hall, Vampire Weekend
Going to the exchange to see his debt posted was a night before publishing add or I would have written the entire scene. I should have.
I had to think of a reason for Inej to be painting. In reality, I think she just finds Ketterdam ugly and needs the beauty in her life.
"Wool socks" is inspired by that viral Danny Pudi clip
I imagined Inej did a lot of the "hanging head first in a canal while the tide comes in" type murders because then she can tell herself that if the Saints want them to live, they will.
"Don't come into my club and refuse my hospitality" is based on something my grandfather would say if we came to his restaurant and weren't hungry. You could order a plate of nothing, but you had to order something.
Kaz mentions that he should learn people's names here. By chapter 14, he will know the name of every Razorgull he meets.
Chapter 7: Dial Drunk, Noah Kahan
I forgot about the first tattoo knife for a long time and had to go back and write it in. I believe Nina had it with her on Heist Night.
Kaz's back being scarred from beatings was a decision I made because I needed him to be damaged in ways people didn't know about to echo his insides.
This is the only time the word "rape" is used in the entire fic.
The private room where they have dinner is based very specifically on one at the Palm that my parents rented out for my dad's birthday once. There are fewer caricatures in Kaz and Inej's.
"Secret for a secret" was the only way I could make Kaz talk in this scene.
Chapter 8: revolution 0, boygenuis
Is the whistle Inej uses (and Wylan does later) the conflict motif from West Side story? I'll never tell.
Inej in the meeting with Pekka is heavily inspired by a specific Space Pirate RP Pixy and I did 12 years ago. "I didn't do it and you can't prove it" was her character's MO there.
$60,000 at 500% for 40 years would end up being $1,764,509,279,127,346,261,335,823,263,022,972,928 with 0 payments.
We know Kaz makes more than $1200 a night, and works 7 days a week. Assuming he never had a day off and never incurred a fine, he would make $17,520,000 in 40 years.
He was always fucked.
I very nearly cut the leg breaking scene because it was just that brutal. I expected more people to be disgusted with Sir afterwards, anyway. This is why I shouldn't have killed him so early. If he was in the room for Kaz's flashback it would have hit harder.
The style of the leg breaking is deeply inspired by my friend Ruby, who writes such beautiful horrors.
Chapter 9: Afraid of Heights, boygenuis
Kaz counting his kisses starting over is something I borrowed from Natasha Romanoff fic. It doesn't count if you had to do it.
I also do not know how to make dry coffee be wet coffee but that's because I hate coffee.
Inej gets to show her smarts here, she knows what Kaz saw even if he still doesn't. He never mentions two sets of books, but she recognizes the behavior and names it.
Inej does angry dishes as a homage to my college friend Elle who used to clean my dorm room when she was pissed off.
Chapter 10: revolution 0, boygenuis
Originally Nina was going to be able to control dissociation a lot better until I reread her intro in SOC and she specifically says she can't control the brain. That's when I invented plan B for the heist: fantasy roofies.
Jesper and Kaz are flirting while picking locks and I ship it.
"You've been through it" is in fact the most insane way I could think of to respond to "I wish I could have picked locks so fewer people would have assaulted me," which is in itself a BUCK WILD thing to say.
The affidavit was a late addition. I needed Kaz to be more afraid.
"Torpor of constant terror" would be a good band name
Originally the painting had a representation of Kaz and Inej in it, but that felt too obvious to me.
Chapter 11: revolution 0, boygenuis
Inej is wearing a fantasy Sari. Kaz specifically got 9 yds of silk for it.
It is raining because something has to go wrong in a heist and it can't be something that the characters could have planned for. Adding it allowed me to slow down the escape from Pekka's office later (sealing the tray) and also set Kaz on high alert so he'd be more susceptible to the panic later
Chapter 12: Cool About It, boygenuis
Describing a person as "built like a ship- wide and low" gave me great joy.
The cloche tray was one of those happy accidents I wrote in that turned into a gift. Initially it was just a tray. Then it had a fork. Then it was a ledger containment device. But that all happened organically.
Originally Jesper left the code in his pants in the ceiling, but I decided that was a stupid mistake to make and I didn't want him to look incompetent.
The guards absolutely smell the acid and that's what brings them into the room.
Chapter 13: Harmony Hall, Vampire Weekend
The chapter of badass lines
There are 0 hits on google for the phrase "upstanding young criminal", which I was sure I stole from somewhere.
The tattoo knife being Kaz's weapon here was planned from chapter 2. I loved the idea of Kaz stabbing Pekka with a knife made of the ink Pekka put on him.
Maybe someday I will write a story about Dime Lion Hostage girl, because I love her an irrational amount.
The hero/corpse line gave me so much joy that I told it to my roommate who also thought I plagiarized it. I did not.
I knew Kaz had to think something happened to Inej, but I was disgusted at the idea of actually hurting her in a sexual way. In the first draft of this scene, I still didn't know why Pekka wanted to get her alone and I wrote a whole monologue about them joining forces and it was extremely bad.
I considered having Kaz tell Pekka that his son had already signed a contract to be a closer analogue to the book, but it just didn't make sense for this Kaz.
Chapter 14: House By The Sea, Moddi
Do not jump out of third story windows. I did a lot of research about this, you will injure yourself.
Here we have the first hint that Kaz has actually integrated into the Gulls, even if he doesn't know it yet. When he bursts into the guard shack Dael (who I also love?) speaks to him, and not Jesper.
The guardroom questions between Jesper and Kaz are my least favorite scene in this story. It feels like plain exposition to me, but it needed to happen and I never figured out how to make it better.
"You should see the other guy" is what Jesper said back in chapter 4 when he got stabbed. It was my brother's go-to response when he was hurt after wrestling matches in high school and college.
"I've been worse" is what Kaz told Nina back in chapter 2 after the beating. It's what I tend to say when someone at work asks me how I am.
Kerstan, the Razorgull who gives Kaz a blanket, is roughly 9 years old. I know his backstory vaguely (he is Dael's little brother), but mostly he's meant to invoke feelings of "what the fuck" in Kaz
I went back and forth about the scene with the caning scars. I almost cut it, but in the end I wanted Inej to assert that she loved Kaz, and I wanted Kaz to be able to tell her that he wasn't ready for her to love him that way, but he wanted to be.
Pekka in draft 1 was the captain of the ship, but if he was running the Dime Lions when Kaz was 9-13, that would only give him a few years to get to that position. So I adjusted him to the owner.
Chapter 15: Harmony Hall, Vampire Weekend
I had the worst time with this chapter, it got rewritten about 90 times
This piece of paper (below) reads "Open before fall/house by the sea/contracts" as the three things I needed to remember to keep in it through the drafts. It was taped next to my computer.
Tumblr media
Inej is talking about the Ice Court when she talks about the big job
This is the only chapter that was NOT finished when I started posting. I didn't know what the last line would be, but I knew I'd find it in editing.

15 Things I Actually Like/Love in Multiverse of Madness
Since yesterday was a certain someone’s birthday, I figured I’d make a post I’ve been sitting on for awhile.
I’ve made no secret of the fact I have mixed opinions about Multiverse of Madness and have gone into great detail about my issues with the film. Hell, I’ll probably have more to say when the “Art of” book comes out in September. But at the same time, there’s a lot that I like or love in MoM so, why not post my musings?
Here we go!
1. Stephen’s Arc - Like I’ve said before, I have issues with how incomplete Stephen’s story feels in this movie, but I do like that he learns to start embracing love in all its forms and is open to being a bit more vulnerable.
2. Stephen & America’s Friendship - Not much to say here; their friendship is very sweet and I wouldn’t be surprised if, when we get to DS3, it’s revealed Stephen adopted America off-screen and she’s now living in the Sanctum with him. Which means he has someone to talk to other than Cloakie.
3. Sinister Strange - Again, not a surprise here if you’ve been following my blog. Yeah, I know not much is given to the character (I wish he’d been the villain if they didn’t wanna go with Nightmare), but he’s wonderfully portrayed and lots of fun to watch. Speaking of which...
4. Music Fight! - Come on! You’ve got two Stephens throwing magic music note projectiles at each other, with the music being Beethoven vs. Bache. How does that not win best fight scene of the movie!? Also, I don’t care how on the nose Sinister’s music selection is. When you’ve all but implied you wanna force yourself on your ex, you’ve pretty much confirmed you’re evil.
5. The Apple Orchard Scene - Call me crazy, but I actually really like the scene on the Apple Orchard and I think it’s one of the better written scenes in the movie. It’s still bogged down by the problems the film’s plot has, but I do think it’s basic structure and dialogue are fine. Not to mention it does a good job showing Stephen’s softness. Plus, Wanda’s hair in a braid is really cute! She should wear it like that more often. Speaking of my boy...
6. How Soft Stephen is in this Movie - People both in and (especially) outside fandom love to act like Stephen’s an arrogant douche and call it a day. And yeah, they’re right; Stephen is a jerk. He’s also a big softie who’s slowly learning to show that softness to others, and I think that NWH and this film, especially, do a good job at conveying he has a heart beneath his snarky demeanor. Mind you, I think that’s Ben’s influence seeping through, not Waldron’s, but my point still stands.
7. Rintrah - Big Himbo Minotaur I’ve been waiting to see on the big screen! Hate that most of his subplot was cut but maybe he’ll get a bigger role in the next one.
8. Clea - I’ve...gushed enough about Clea as it is, so I’ll keep it brief; Holy shit! The rumors about Charlize being Clea were true and we FINALLY have Stephen’s wife in the MCU! Let the epic star-crossed romance begin!!!
9. The Music - I originally wasn’t crazy about Danny Elfman’s score the first time around, but in subsequent viewings, it’s grown on me. My favorite tracks are the main title theme and (of course) Lethal Symphonies.
10. Dead Strange - I mean...you’ve got Stephen puppeting a zombie variant of himself with a cape made of damned souls, doesn’t get more metal/comic bookie than that! Also, I do love watching Sam Raimi rip off himself with the way zombie Stephen rises from the grave like something out of Evil Dead.
11. The Cinematography - I’ve said before I think this is a beautifully shot film and I meant it. Raimi has a good eye for visuals and I love that Marvel allowed him to break from their in-house style, because there’s some really great camerawork in this film! The Evil Dead zoom-ins that are tilted on a Dutch Angle, Wanda coming through the gong ala The Ring, Stephen’s face in his broken watch, the entrance to Sinister’s sanctum, the multiverse scene which is basically one, continuous long take? You can say whatever you want about this film, but you can’t deny that it’s beautifully made.
12. The Parkour Fight - I love it when Stephen uses his brains to defeat his enemies, and this is such an instance.
13. I love you in every universe - I think this one speaks for itself.
14. Donna Strange - Again, I absolutely hate they ignored making this into a plot point (especially when it would’ve so easy to do), but I do love the monologue itself. Not only is well acted, but you can tell from how choked up Stephen is over it that yes, the loss of his sister was and is still very painful for him. I also love Sinister’s response, “But we don’t talk about that, do we?”. It says so much about the wound Donna’s left on her brother’s heart, even after all this time. We needed more nuanced moments like that in this film.
15. Stephen being Extra Pretty - I know I’ve been gushing about since we got the official trailer last winter but my GOD is Stephen beautiful in this movie!!! Yes, he’s always been pretty. But it’s like someone asked Raimi, “So how pretty do you want Stephen to be in this movie?”, and he responded with a resounding, “Yes.” Either way, it only confirms what I’ve been saying for awhile now; Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange is FUCKING HOT!!!
There! I listed fifteen things I like/love in this movie. Do with it what you will!
P.S. Also, I’m not listing Armani Strange as a separate item because it still technically counts as being part of Number 15.

‘Rogues: True Stories of Grifters, Killers, Rebels and Crooks’ by Patrick Radden Keefe
Patrick Radden Keefe tells us in the preface to in his new book, Rogues: True Stories of Grifters, Killers, Rebels and Crooks, that the 12 long-form essays “reflect some of my abiding preoccupations: crime and corruption, secrets and lies, the permeable membrane separating licit and illicit worlds, the bonds of family, the power of denial.” In this, of course, the stories are similar to the concerns in his previous two books: Say Nothing: A True Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland and Empire of Pain: The Secret History of the Sackler Dynasty. It’s a muddied world he covers, where just about everyone is tainted, though even the most sinister rogues have some mediating human qualities.
Among the more menacing group of transgressors Keefe writes about is Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, whose pre-terrorist college life displayed “a painfully American banality: cinder-block dorm rooms, big-screen TVs, mammoth boxes of Cheez-Its.” Wim Holleeder, the Dutch gangster who allegedly has a hit out for his own sister, comes across as wily and even quirky during his trial — “shifting in his chair, shaking his head, taking his eyeglasses off and twirling them like a propeller” — though Keefe makes no bones about the man’s overall brutality; and drug kingpin Joaquín Guzmán Loera, “El Chapo” — at one point one of the most feared criminals in the world — “distinguished himself as a trafficker who brought an unusual sense of imagination and play to the trade.”
Then there’s Amy Bishop, a neurobiologist denied tenure at the University of Alabama, Huntsville, who, during the last department meeting of the semester, blocked the conference room door and shot six of her colleagues, killing three. Bishop grew up in a Boston suburb where she had shot and killed her brother, and Keefe thoroughly investigates this act, and its ultimate lack of consequence (the killing was ruled accidental), as a possible precursor to the later crime. Discussing whether or not the murder was intentional, Keefe writes, “When violence suddenly ruptures the course of our lives, we tend to tell ourselves stories in order to make it explicable. Confronted with scrambled pieces of evidence, we arrange them into a narrative.” Keefe concludes that “neither story” about the killing “was especially convincing,” and this willingness to live with ambiguity and irresolution is a hallmark of his journalism.
While the profiles of people who might rightly be considered villains is riveting, I found myself drawn more to the stories about genteel rogues. There is German wine forger Hardy Rodenstock, whose hustle was to convince wealthy people that the bottles he was selling were originally from the cellar of Thomas Jefferson. When uber-conservative and wine connoisseur Bill Koch, brother of Charles and David, goes mercilessly after Rodenstock, it’s hard not to side with the “bad guy” of the story. Similarly, HSBC computer technician Hervé Falciani may have broken the law when he disclosed which wealthy bank customers were laundering money and evading taxes, but our sympathies are generally with the whistleblower, whatever his motives might have been.
The book ends with a chapter on Anthony Bourdain, who is perhaps less of a rogue than the other scoundrels in the book. Though he periodically raises a cynical eyebrow over Bourdain’s antics, Keefe is clearly drawn to the celebrity chef’s star power, this man with the magnetism of “an aging rocker,” who “transformed himself into a well-heeled nomad who wanders the planet meeting fascinating people and eating delicious food,” fully enjoying his “fantasy profession.” The story was published in The New Yorker (where all these pieces first appeared) before Bourdain’s suicide, and it ends on an upbeat note, which is undercut by the tragedy that will follow. It’s an irony one can imagine that Keefe, whose profiles display a boundless interest in other people, feels deeply.

Are there any changes (that the hoa writers made from the original) that you like and dislike?
Excellent question!
Okay I think I’ve said this before but I both love and hate the fact that the plot was condensed in HOA. Due to the fact that the English studios bought way less episodes than the original version had, they were forced to tighten the plot. This meant a lot of characters outside the residents were combined, as well as the two plots in HHA (the mystery and Joyce’s disappearance) becoming connected.
I think a lot of these combos were excellent, like Rufus and Zeno becoming one character. And I think making Joy’s disappearance tie into the mystery of the Cup/Grail made everything make way more sense than it did in HHA.
I also think they cut out a lot of subplots that wouldn’t have gone over as well to an American/British audience. A lot of Dutch/Belgian fans complain about the fact that they had to make a whole new show instead of just dubbing or subbing HHA and airing that. However, I think there’s a reason for that— beyond even different censoring laws in different countries. In season one especially, Het Huis Anubis has a lot of extreme plot lines the one that comes to mind the most is the rules Victor puts in place after Trudie is fired. The characters even make a comment about how “this isn’t America!” or something along those lines (I forget the exact translation).
A lot of these types of moments are sensitive to an English speaking audience, so in that respect I think it was wise to remove them or tone them down. There was also a lot of fluff that didn’t serve the overall arc of the story.
All that said, I think cutting it down also did it a big disservice! Because there was so much filler and fluff, there was also a lot of bonding and character development that English speaking audiences didn’t get to see in HOA. In that respect, a lot of the characters in HOA— while lovable— didn’t get nearly as much attention or development as their Dutch counterparts. Friendships weren’t as deep and neither were relationships.
I also disliked how HOA pitted Joy and Nina against each other. In HHA, Nienke dislikes her for a blip of time but then realizes that Joyce is actually a really awesome person and then they’re friends. They villainized Joy for no reason and it makes me sad.
ONE LAST THING: I am VERY happy HOA cut out that one instance of blackface that HHA had because actually what the fuck was that shit? Literally that whole subplot was awfullllllll and so racist. Like, why did that have to happen? It was so out of pocket and played off for laughs

A ⭐ for you :)
Things I can think of, in no particular order!
The Meaning of Family: In this story I introduced H'aanit and Olberic's daughter as an original character, so of course I needed to give that baby a name! I wanted something that was in the style of S'warkii but referenced both her parents. I actually ended up dreaming the name B'renit - I guess my subconscious was working on the problem, and it came up with the perfect answer! I also had to pick a name for the family's new animal companion, and since Linde is of German/Dutch/Scandinavian origin, that's where I focused my research and found Lieven, which is Dutch and means 'dear friend'. Seemed pretty perfect, so I went with it! Ballade No.1 in G minor: This story was my assignment for Chocolate Box, and I was so excited to write it because I was once a music major and writing slashfic about Romantic Era composers seemed like a lot of fun! But I got too in my head about doing historical research at first, so I had to get over that feeling of not knowing enough before I was able to just hammer it out. Also, I kind of want to share this story with my uncle some day, because he is an opera singer and also gay, so I feel like he would be able to appreciate it! :)
Changing Fate: One of the many plot ideas provided to me by my partner. He is my idea-man, always suggesting scenarios that make me go "Damn! I need to write that!" and this fic was entirely one of those instances. Fun fact: he also writes really, really well, but doesn't do it often if at all because he is so in his head about it that he doesn't enjoy doing it (I often describe it as him taking half an hour to write a one paragraph email, which isn't actually an exaggeration). But I will just go ahead and bang out a first draft in 20 minutes and not question it until I edit. So it's a win-win, though I feel like I'm getting the better part of the deal because he is so much better at plot stuff than I am.
Would She Love Me if She Knew?: When I was planning out this story and knew that I wanted to introduce the prince of the Cliftlands as a villain, I originally considered making him be Therion. But I was hesitant, because he is such a fan favorite, and I didn't want the fandom to come after me with torches and pitchforks. But then I thought, why not make him Darius, a character that everyone already hates?, and I came up with a different idea for incorporating Therion instead.
A Reason To Stay: I posted this fic, my first for the Auron/Lulu pairing, with accompanying fanart, but I believe I had started working on the drawing first. I had already drawn some Aurlu smut (posted under the title Words Are Not Enough) and wanted to make another piece for them since I was in the midst of my shipping obsession with them. So while I was writing the fic, I kept the logistics of the drawing and the pose in mind as I was writing the love scene between them.
I could keep going, but that is probably more than anyone actually wants to read already, hahaha!

Historical Gameplay Ask Game - Answers
13. Which neighborhoods are your favorite for decades? Do any fit a certain time period better than others? I love Windenburg and Henford on Bagley. My current decades is in Windenburg 'cause I played my last decades in Henford and it filled up so quickly with side families that I wanted to start out in a bigger world to have the family around for a longer time. I also loved Oasis Springs for the 1950s to 1980s when it comes to the mid-century styled homes. Willow creek with it's french colonial style is also one of my favorite worlds for decades and Brindleton with the Dutch Colonial/New England Build Style. 18. What do you struggle with most in historical gameplay? I'm always annoyed when Townies show up with their tablets or smartphones or when your sim takes a selfie somehow without electricity even invented. Another thing is the modern elements in the worlds like statue's you can't get rid off. I tried the timeless mod but it's still pretty much the same. I'm still wishing for a medieval pack at some point. 20. Share a “behind the scenes” fact or story about your save file/challenge
My decades save is mostly a collection of dead sims from previous saves. My founders both died as a teen and a baby in their original saves. Camille died on her toddler roll in my Original Decades she was originally named Nimue Sandersen after the Arthur Saga. Raphaël (originally named Matthew Remington, he would have been king one day) died as a teen on a heart attack cause he came back from school enraged in my Disney Villain (Decades Style) Challenge. So I gave them a new life and their own legacy as my new Decades Founders. Nimue's older sister (Caelia) who died as a teen as well also made it to the new Decades Save File as Townie. Another Townie is the current heir of my old legacy I gave up on. Almost all of my first Townie generation has a story like that and I kinda love every single one of them even if I don't play them.
Thank you for asking @dsimsdecades. 🖤

The Lab Rats™️
TL;DR:
Zephy is outgoing and the 1st victim
Draumr is the main character and villain
Cerulean is Zephy's dog that is still sour towards Draumr
Cookie is Zephy's cat turned kitty-dog that loves everyone and has a crush on Cerulean
Declipton is Draumr's assistant who just loves to help
Jekyll is Draumr's inner demon that is the main villain
Shredder is Draumr's older brother that loves to tease them
Hyde is Shredder's inner demon that controls him to do things he doesn't want to do. He is also Jekyll's older brother that treats him the same way Shredder treats Draumr.
Susie is Shredder's only friend who was also almost killed by him. She is very sweet with a quiet and clam voice.
Dorë is one of Draumr's experiments with no prior interaction with the rest of the group. He is the younger brother of Xylen and has a head for a hand.
Xylen and Toka is Dorë's older brother and also had no prior interaction with the group. The tail is Toka and it is very dimwitted.
Atreyu is the most dangerous experiment in the lab. He's very angry and feisty and the only interaction allowed with him his through a separate room with a little space for nutrients to be delivered to him.
The Lab Rats™ is a group of my fursonas that are all a part of the same storyline. I currently have 2 in the making, this being one of them. The other one is a Mandela Catalogue AU titled Mandela Experiments AU (I love the mad scientist aesthetic). I will post about the AU later when I create the official character designs.
I feel like it is necessary for me to post an introduction on them all (there's 12 total)
Tumblr media
Zephaniah (Zephy) - 6'3" - She/her or they/them- Bisexual
Zephy is an outgoing fox-dragon hybrid with a heavy southern accent (bc she was my 1st ever character and I'm southern). She was originally a red fox with a normal fox appearance before Draumr (next) lost his mind and injected her with a concoction made from his own blood.
She was afraid of Draumr for a while after that, but she is very forgiving and mended their relationship. They still go on mini date nights after everything that has happened, but they always have a 3rd wheel...
.
.
.
.
Tumblr media
Draumr - 5'10" - they/them or he/him (friends only) - Pansexual
Draumr is the main character of the series, and the villain as well. I didn't put him 1st because this was my 2nd fursona. He is a Dutch Angel Dragon mad scientist with extreme separation anxiety. Anytime he is separated from Zephy, Shredder (his brother), or Declipton (his "partner in crime") for an extended amount of time, they will lose their mind and start ripping parts of their body out (like his feathers).
This anxiety is what caused them to go mad and start their experiments on other innocent people of their small town. During their 1st one (Zephy), their eye was torn out by her. They liked the way it looked, so they never fixed it.
.
.
.
.
Tumblr media
Cerulean - 3'9" - he/they/it - Bisexual
Cerulean is Zephy's dog turned into a monster. He isn't the most loving creature, only showing affection to Zephy, Declipton, and Susie. It absolutely LOATHES Cookie and its a surprise they haven't killed them yet.
.
.
.
.
Tumblr media
Cookie - 4'0" - they/it - Pansexual
Cookie is Zephy's cat that got turned into a kitty-dog by Draumr. They are very forgiving, more so than Zephy, and they love everyone, whether they are loved back or not. This causes some trouble between it and Cerulean because it is a one-sided pining relationship.
.
.
.
.
Tumblr media
Declipton - 7'3" - they/them - Pansexual
Declipton is a protogen that loves to help out Draumr in whatever way they can. They have no sense of right from wrong, which is why they're so happy committing literal crimes for the dutchie.
They are essentially the villain's henchman of the story.
.
.
.
.
Tumblr media
Jekyll - 6'0" - he/they/it - Bisexual
Jekyll is a Sweetdevil that has taken control of Draumr and is one of the main antagonists of the story. He uses his hypnotic eyes to take control of the dutchie. Its like his anger relief because he has Hyde to deal with.
He and Hyde have a very common brotherly relationship. Hyde likes to mess with Jekyll because Jekyll is too physically weak to take his brother on. But he is victorious when it comes to brains as he is incredibly intelligent and can easily overpower the stronger demon with any critical thinking.
Jekyll is made of that of a Reese's cup. Their entire body is edible aside from the eyes which will not regenerate as fast if eaten. Every part of his body is either chocolate or peanut butter, meaning anyone with a severe peanut allergy will have a reaction if nearby him despite the fact they will not be able to see him (only Draumr, Hyde, and Zephy can see him).
.
.
.
.
Tumblr media
Shredder - 6'3" - he/him or they/them - Gay
Shredder is Draumr's older brother and host for Hyde. He treats Draumr rather harsh, typically making his insanity worse.
He does have 1 friend and that's Susie. Even after Hyde manipulated him to rip her arm off with his teeth, they still remain friends, although Shredder mostly hides away in guilt. He sometimes vents to Atreyu, even if the fox couldn't care less what he has to say.
.
.
.
.
Tumblr media
Hyde - 6'10" - he/they/it - Gay
Hyde is the Sweetdevil possessing Shredder and Jekyll's older brother. He is very brutal and has absolutely no morals or care for anyone other than himself. He uses Shredder to inflict pain and torment on the entire group aside from Jekyll, which he could torment himself.
His body consists of that of a Milky Way bar except for his eyes which are not edible. Yes, both he and Jekyll are made of candy as it is a species rule. His entire body is either chocolate or caramel and he can only be seen by Shredder and Jekyll.
.
.
.
.
Tumblr media
Susie - 5'5" - she/her - Pansexual
Susie is Shredder's best friend, despite the fact he ripped her arm off. The reason she hasn't bled out is because Draumr and Jekyll both took pity on her because they knew it was caused by their older brothers, so the 2 decided to inject her with a specially made concoction that Draumr made just for her to help keep the blood from oozing out.
Despite the fact she is missing an arm, she is one of the only ones that ever leave the lab (Declipton being the other one). She just wraps her arm up and leaves to keep people from asking how she isn't dead. Because even though she knows what Draumr is doing is wrong, she knows he's not in control of his actions. She just doesn't know why he's doing what he's doing.
.
.
.
.
Tumblr media
Dorë - 5'10" - he/they/it - Pansexual
Dorë is one of the few experiments that doesn't have any relation to anyone else in the group other than his brother, who was also an experiment. He was abducted by Declipton and experimented on by Draumr. His main side-effect was the hand that turned into a 2nd head. Him and his hand-head don't get along as the 2nd head is very feisty and angry, but not as bad as Atreyu.
The white glow in his ref is not a part of his body. He is only lavender. The white is there as highlights, and despite being a canine, he doesn't have a tail.
.
.
.
.
Tumblr media
Xylen and Toka - 6'7" (anthro) - he/she/they/it - Gay
Xylen is Dorë's older brother while Toka is the dimwitted tail. She was also abducted by Declipton and experimented on by Draumr, and Xylen liked the dumb tail enough to name it after his ancient grandfather.
.
.
.
.
Tumblr media
Atreyu - 5'4" - he/they/it - Pansexual
Atreyu is the most hostile experiment. Nobody knows why he had such an adverse reaction nor why he became so aggressive compared to the others, but he is locked in a solitary confinement room with the only communication coming from a side room separated by a double-sided mirror. That side room is how he is fed. A special little pocket sits on the floor in between the 2 rooms where Draumr or Declipton can safely give Atreyu their food.
Atreyu was a tourist visiting from a neighboring village when abducted by Declipton and injected with Draumr's concoction. When he woke, he immediately became aggressive and attacked the 2. Draumr has theorized that it could be something to do with the fact he wasn't a native to the village as everyone else was relatively tame in comparison to him. There weren't any other experiments done on tourists or outsiders because of this little fox.
