THEME: Fae & Fen
This week’s recommendations revolve around faeries, either as benign outsiders that are misunderstood, or as malevolent or strange entities that can be horrific threats.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Strays, by kumada1.
Strays is a 246 page tabletop rpg about changelings---the children of two fae courts---caught in between the pull of the mortal and fae worlds.
Choose between eight Courts, take special powers, befriend buildings, wander between worlds, and try to get by in a setting where everyone wants you to grow up and pick a side.
There are rules for physical, social, and magical combat. Detailed writeups of the eight Realms of faerie. An overhaul of the regular PbtA rules. GMing advice. A sample scenario. Rules for burning yourself out and becoming an NPC. A shared hangout spot for the party. And more.
This game combines the magic of faerie with the paranoia of a setting where everyone is keeping secrets - even your parents. Your characters have only recently discovered their fae origins, and now that they have magic, all of the Fae Courts - and a mundane Taskforce - want them. This game is PbtA so much of the fiction will follow from what the characters are interested in - what’s on the line if they start pursuing their magic? Will their mortal families pay a price for being unsuspecting hosts? Play to find out.
The Gloaming Diaries, by Timor Jack Press.
The Gloaming Diaries is a tabletop roleplaying game of modern fairy tales in small towns. As a player, you take on the role of the gloamspun, half-human, half-fae beings created when a fairy fleeing eternal war encounters a human seeking change within the Wood. Needing one another, they weave their souls together, becoming one.  Among your fellow gloamspun what unfolds next is a new story. For you have two pasts, but only one future.
Play as one of 10 Paths, each of which describes the human you were and the path that led you to that fateful twilight meeting, and one of 10 Tales, each of which describes the fae you were and the story your magical life told. Were you an Elder entering the woods to die who instead found a new life with a Tale of Mischief? Were you a Lover who slipped into the woods for a tryst and found yourself drawn to join souls with a Tale of Sorrow?
What stories will you tell in your small town at the edge of the woods? For although everyone's a little strange in remote parts, few are as strange as you.
The Gloaming Diaries uses either a d20 or a pack of tarot cards to move the story forward. This game has a Third Party License that outlines the rules for creating your own content for The Gloaming Diaries, and the creator has a number of their own supplements for the game, encompassing everything from violence, death, and dreams.
Changelings: The Magic & The Fury, by Kolek Niewiary.
This is a roleplaying game about changelings i.e. fae creatures (the elves, the faerie, the fair folk) inhabiting human bodies. While in the mortal realm they must control their conflicting nature while fighting for the cause that called them onto Earth.
The players take the role of the changelings. The fair folk, the fae left this world as the civilization developed and banality ruled. Now, recalled by human dreams of a better world, they return as changelings. Infuriated with the world that once rejected them, with the people who killed the magic and replaced it with Excel spreadsheets. The Faerie, wearing a human body, finds a cause to fight for. They come to help the weak and the excluded.
Veterans of Honey Heist or Lasers & Feelings may resonate a little bit with the rules of Changelings, but it draws most of its mechanical inspiration from Wights, by Steffie de Vaan. Your characters, as changelings called forth by mortals to meet injustices with righteous anger, will teeter between the banality of the human world and the Dreams of Faerie. These two stats are called Approaches, and they can increase and decrease depending on character actions. If you’re enthusiastic about justice and faerie magics, this might be the game for you!
Adiotopia, by Minakie.
Adiotopia is a micro TTRPG (for 3+ players) about collaboratively telling the stories of a group of young Protectors in training, who travel between their world (Sanubari) and Fäerie with their mentor in order to help both Saubi and Fae deal with their everyday problems, enforcing the law, mitigating conflicts, protecting people, studying the indigenous fauna and flora and potentially solving mysteries, while always being on the lookout for the dangerous darklings and the unpredictable undead. If you're lucky, you might befriend the dragons or the elves, or even learn a magic trick or two along the way.
The premise of the game is that the world is full of creatures and mysteries worth investigating and that, while some of them might have a simple and rather ordinary explanation, others might not be what they seem at first, and be somehow connected with the multitude of mystical creatures that inhabit the land.
Adiotopia is a great pick-up game that borrows some ideas of magical settings for teenagers and combines it the the allure of Faerie. Faerie is a dangerous and evocative place, with endless possibilities in regards to what the party will find there. Sanubari is home, and comfortable, a place you can retreat to when Faerie becomes too weird or wild. If you like coming-of-age fiction about young people stepping into a magical world and having adventures, this is a great option worth checking out.
Faewater, by A Smouldering Lighthouse.
In the darkest woods, you may find the fae. Old and strange, their power and pleasure can be intoxicating. In the darkest waters, you may find the same.
A group of mortals have gathered to seek the deep fae. Tonight is your final act after months of secret meetings. You must not fail now.
Faewater is a one-page dark fantasy game about underwater fairies and the mortals they prey on. This tabletop role-playing game is designed to be played in a single two to three hour session.
This is a one-page game that explores the horrific side of Faerie - the power and terror of dealing with the unknown. You are mortals diving underwater to find a mystery that proves to be more deadly than you expected, and throughout the game, your character will find themselves replaced by fae creatures. Don’t hold on too carefully to your PC - you’re going to lose them at some point, either to home or to the deep.
Hedge, by A Couple of Drakes.
The Fey were here before we were. They have not forgotten.
Their forms are multitude. Their powers are incalculable. Their mastery of the world, the Wyld, that they fashioned for themselves when nature rebelled against them, is absolute. They press against the edges of our world, watching. Waiting. They pick at the seams and wait for the barrier between us and them to unravel. They are coming. All that stands between them and us is the Hedge. The barrier of Nature's magic which keeps them at bay is weakening. In her agony, the Hedge calls forth her champions.
"My savior, my darling, my cure. Stop at nothing."
Once, you were merely human. Once, the Fey would have looked at you only as a thing to be bent or broken. Or eaten. Now the Hedge has chosen you to stand, to fight, and to shine. Harness the powers of nature, upgradeable weapons, and stolen Fey magic, to fight against hordes of scary faeries.
Hold tight to your humanity as you take the fight into the depths of the Wyld, facing down the Court of Air and Darkness in the heart of their power with six iconic Wardens, 102 awe-inspiring powers, 65 beefy pages of rules and vague-but-evocative lore, and the robust, power-fantasy fueling core mechanics of LUMEN. Hold the line against terrifying foes, collect powerful Fey Grafts, and save what's left of the world from a dark fairytale apocalypse.
LUMEN games excel at providing you with moldable character sheets and satisfying combat, and Hedge is no exception. The Fae are decidedly antagonistic here, and your characters are using every weapon in their arsenal to hold back the horde of fae creatures threatening your existence. There are a number of supplements, such as Horde and Hearth, for players who want to see the full extent of what this game can offer. If you want heroism, combat, and power-fantasy, this is the game for you.

The Autumn Court
Nicknames: The Court of Fear, the Leaden Mirror, the Ashen Court Emotion: Fear Colors: Red, orange, yellow, grey, brown Autumn's Bargain: While Autumn is in power their Bargain forces the True Fae announce their intentions before they attack. Fear's courtiers reflect the ominous mystique of their season. The fiery hues of dying leaves, massive flocks of migrating birds, legends of the barrier between worlds growing thin. The Autumn Court holds a complicated opinion of their condition. While their imprisonment by the True Fae robbed them of their humanity and they still live in fear of recapture, it also granted them the gift of magic. They embrace the arcane, readily delving into the Hedge and studying the secrets of the True Fae to wield their own magic against them. Seeking to understand what terrifies them, Autumn gazes into the abyss, and the abyss gazes back.

What about Changeling the Lost and it's two Editions on cold Iron
Changeling: The Lost comes later, and I was looking up the origins of the thing. But here, the 1st Edition (2007) says this:
Cold Iron Those who know the secrets of the Fae tell a curious tale about the Fair Folk’s weakness to cold iron. Long ago, a powerful Other made a Contract with iron itself, but that creature failed to honor the terms of the Contract. Thereafter, iron swore itself as an enemy to the prodigal people, cold and unyielding in its grudge against them. This elemental animosity passed down to the changelings, as well. In effect, an item made from relatively pure iron (not steel) ignores defenses contrived by the fae and their magics. A protection Contract will not offer any safety from an iron weapon, for example. A changeling wearing fae armor will find it’s no protection from a spike torn from a wrought iron fence. Iron pure enough to be called “cold iron” is used very rarely in the modern world, and most Lost who look for a weapon to use against their fellows must often hunt through antique stores to find items with the distinctive grain or forge it themselves. Iron weapons forged by hand have even more power. Mass-produced, machine-cut knives are not “cold iron,” nor is metal that has been conjured, transmuted or even shaped by magic. The most damaging iron has been hammered into its shape with nothing but muscle, a hammer and patience. Hand-forged iron confers an additional benefit, but only against the Gentry — True Fae suffer aggravated damage from hand-forged iron weapons. Even contact with hand-forged iron causes discomfort to the Others. Against changelings, hand-forged iron works the same as pure iron. Luckily for changelings, pure iron, especially hand-forged, is somewhat rare in most modern environments. Objects built from metal for durability are typically made of steel or other alloys. Iron is less common, less practical and even regarded as a bit “primitive” in certain contexts — consider the somewhat coarse look of a hand-wrought iron fence when compared to a mass-produced chain-link fence. Especially among weaponry (where iron is most likely to come into play), iron is the exception rather than the rule. Iron implements can be had relatively easily, but they’ll probably have to be special ordered or created by custom work.
And 2nd Edition (2019) says this:
Cold Iron Legends tell that long ago, the Gentry broke a contract with Iron. As a result, iron has ever been the bane of the fae. Some changelings theorize that instead, iron’s mythic significance as it brought about industrial revolution (and a deathblow to the age of superstitions and legend) makes it anathema to creatures of dream and magic. Changelings suffer the bite of iron as well, due to their fae heritage. Whatever its origin, iron ignores fae-born defenses and magic. A Contract, token, or other type of fae magic that provides armor or enhanced Defense will not shield a fae creature (including changelings) from iron weapons. Changelings can’t escape from iron bindings or enclosures via portaling. Iron is difficult to find in the modern day, outside of antique shops, old estates surrounded by wrought-iron fences, cast-iron skillets, and so on. What exactly is iron? Does steel count? Conceptually, iron is what most people consider iron. Your average person would perceive most swords, for example, as steel, but an iron gate as definitely iron. So-called “cold iron” acts as a frailty bane for changelings and True Fae. To qualify as “cold iron,” the metal must be mostly pure iron and magic cannot play a role in its creation in any way. It must be hand-forged, not mass-produced, cast, or created by a machine. Touching this iron inflicts aggravated damage on the Gentry and changelings. Changelings and other fae creatures can never have magic that manipulates, creates, or destroys iron. Elementals may never favor iron as an element, and indeed, if they favor metals, iron is excluded from their purview. This is a hard prohibition. When in doubt, Storytellers should always favor iron piercing fae magic, or otherwise being immune to it. This limitation even applies to the basic advantages changeling characters possess; for example, iron restraints make a changeling unable to escape automatically with Glamour.
Basically the authors were going for "old-timey non-industrial hand-crafted thing", with… debatable criteria. Steel is 3800 years old! But it's an interesting take.

Seattle (by Night)
Tumblr media
Demographics
In Seattle, the supernatural community is comprised of various factions with distinct demographics. The Camarilla vampires are the dominant vampire group in the city, consisting of 1,000 members. They are organized and adhere to a strict hierarchy and set of rules. On the other hand, the Anarchs, a more rebellious and independent vampire faction, have a smaller presence with 127 members. They reject the Camarilla's authority and seek more personal freedom.
The Awakened, referring to mages who possess mystical abilities, make up a population of 1,110 individuals in Seattle. Among them, the Bridge Trolls cabal comprises 23 individuals. These mages lead a clandestine existence among the homeless population and actively resist the Technocratic Union's control. Seattle is home to a significant Garou population, with 160,956 werewolves residing in the city. However, the majority of Garou, approximately 160,000, are found in the outskirts and rural areas surrounding Seattle. These werewolves have adapted to the wilderness and protect the natural world from supernatural threats. In contrast, 956 Garou have adapted to urban life, likely due to the encroachment of cities on their ancestral territories.
The population of changelings in Seattle is relatively small, consisting of 199 individuals. Changelings are beings with a mix of fae and mortal nature and are tied to the realm of dreams. They often dwell in hidden enclaves, interacting with both the mortal and supernatural realms. However, the changeling population in Seattle is dispersed throughout the city, making it more challenging for them to unite and confront their internal conflicts.
Tumblr media
Government
The Seattle Camarilla is the dominant faction of vampires in the city, characterized by their structured hierarchy and adherence to a set of rules and traditions. Unlike some other vampire factions, the Camarilla in Seattle generally avoids direct involvement in human politics unless it directly impacts their interests or business. At the time, the Camarilla is under the rule of Prince Alec Cross, who ascended to power after a period of unstable leadership by the late Lou Grand. Prince Alec Cross allowed the Tremere clan, a clan known for their mastery of blood magic, into the city during his early days as ruler. This decision indicates his willingness to forge alliances and embrace the benefits that the Tremere can bring to Seattle.
As part of rebuilding his authority and strengthening his rule, Prince Alec is in the process of reestablishing the Primogen Council. The Primogen Council is composed of representatives from the various vampire clans, acting as advisers and wielding influence within the Camarilla's power structure. These council members play a crucial role in decision-making and ensuring the interests of their respective clans are represented.
Additionally, Prince Alec is actively seeking a Seneschal, who serves as his second-in-command and assists with the day-to-day affairs of ruling the Camarilla. The Seneschal acts as a trusted adviser and administrator, supporting the Prince in maintaining order and overseeing the city's vampire population.
To maintain control and enforce the Prince's authority throughout Seattle, Sheriffs are appointed to each district. Sheriffs are responsible for upholding the Prince's laws, maintaining order, and dealing with any threats or breaches of the Camarilla's rules within their respective districts.
Lastly, the Prince employs a Herald, whose role is to disseminate information, announcements, and decrees on behalf of the Prince. The Herald acts as a messenger, ensuring that the Prince's ascension to power and his rulings are communicated to the vampire population and beyond.
Tumblr media
Factions
Project Upside-Down is a specialized team operating within the Border Corps Division of the Void Engineers (Technocratic Union) in Seattle. This team is dedicated to investigating and responding to incursions of Wyrm-related entities within the Washington State area. The Wyrm is a corrupting force in the supernatural world, representing decay, corruption, and destruction.
The primary objective of Project Upside-Down is to identify and neutralize any Wyrm-related threats that pose a risk to the region. The team members are highly trained in both magical and technological methods, allowing them to combat and contain these malevolent entities effectively. They possess a deep understanding of the Wyrm's influence, its minions, and the strategies required to counteract its corrupting presence.
The Bridge Trolls are a distinctive cabal of 23 mages who lead an unconventional and clandestine existence within the homeless population of Seattle. They have established their sanctum in the tent-city located under The Troll's Bridge, utilizing the hidden space as their base of operations and safe haven. The cabal's sigil, the troll, represents their identity and serves as a symbol of their resistance against the Technocratic Union. As members of the larger Free Council, the Bridge Trolls dedicate themselves to challenging and thwarting the operations of the Technocracy, often employing tactics of sabotage and distraction to disrupt their plans and agendas.
The Duchy of Evergreen is a significant subdivision within the Kingdom of Pacifica, a crypto-nation existing within the realms of changelings. The duchy encompasses the regions of Washington and Oregon, with a concentration of changelings residing in the cities of Portland and Seattle.
In Seattle, a criminal gang known as the Worcester Knights, led by Finney Fallon, operates within the boundaries of the Duchy of Evergreen. This gang, notorious among the changeling community, targets universities and art districts as their hunting grounds. Their activities involve preying on creative mortals and draining their Glamour energy, which poses a threat to the realm of mortal dreams. The presence of the Worcester Knights creates an atmosphere of danger and instability within the supernatural community of Seattle.
Tumblr media
Points of Interest
The Troll's Bridge serves as the codename for a specific bridge where the Bridge Trolls cabal of mages holds their clandestine meetings. The actual name of the bridge is known to the public, but the secret gathering place remains hidden, accessible only to those who are part of or familiar with the cabal. To identify the Troll's Bridge, one must look for a distinct marker: a graffiti troll located at the entrance to the underside of the bridge. The graffiti troll serves as a hidden symbol, blending in with other street art and potentially deceiving those who are unaware of its significance. This unique marker acts as a subtle indication to members of the Bridge Trolls cabal that they have arrived at their meeting place.
The bridge itself likely possesses certain characteristics that make it an ideal meeting spot for the mages. It may provide a secluded and discreet location, shielded from prying eyes and unwanted attention. The underside of the bridge might offer cover and privacy, allowing the cabal to gather and discuss their plans without interference.
The choice to use a bridge as a meeting place could also hold symbolic meaning. Bridges are often seen as connectors, linking different areas or realms together. In this case, the Bridge Trolls cabal may see themselves as bridging the gap between the mortal and supernatural worlds, utilizing their magical abilities to navigate and influence both realms.
The Menagerie Caern is a sacred and hidden space nestled within Discovery Park, serving as a gathering point for the Garou, werewolves bound to protect the natural world. Located near a small petting zoo, the Menagerie Caern remains concealed from the general public, allowing the Garou to commune with the spirits and perform their sacred rituals undisturbed. At the heart of the Menagerie Caern is a cairn, a pile of stones or rocks carefully arranged to mark and consecrate the location. The cairn serves as a physical and spiritual focal point, symbolizing the connection between the Garou and the natural spirits that reside in the area. It acts as a gateway for communication and communion with the spiritual realm.
Surrounded by the lush and vibrant environment of Discovery Park, the Menagerie Caern exudes a profound sense of natural energy. It is a place where the Garou can gather to perform rituals, seek guidance from the spirits, and strengthen their bond with nature. The Caern is infused with the essence of the wild, serving as a sanctuary for the Garou and a source of power for their spiritual and physical endeavors. The Menagerie Caern's hidden location within Discovery Park provides a level of protection and secrecy, ensuring that it remains undisturbed by those who are unaware of its significance. This hidden nature allows the Garou to safeguard the sacred space and maintain the delicate balance between the physical and spiritual worlds.

You know, it's thematically interesting how all of the splats in the World of Darkness setting seem to fit The Triat perfectly. Like, Fera, Changelings, and the Fae are all creatures of wild change and therefore match the Wyld, Hunters and Mages, as groups devoted to protecting and achieving the heights of humanity respectively, clearly match the Weaver, and Vampires, Kuei-Jin, Demons, and Wraiths all represent the sort of corruptive non-death that is the hallmark of the the current version of the Wyrm. I don't know what this *means* per se, but it is certainly interesting.

God I love my bunny girl character in Changeling: the Lost and how she’s actually a person whose name was eaten from her spirit, her skin flensed to pieces off of her body with knives, and the pelt of a previous rabbit girl sewn onto her steaming exposed meat and now she’s bnuny.
She’s mostly all better now from the trauma of being chased as prey and is now part of a motley, or adventuring party, comprised of a potted plant woman mystic, a shark woman MMA amateur, and a gingerbread cookie weapons expert who Carries a shotgun pistol filled with cold iron pellets.
Her name is Esther Bonnie. It’s a pun.

I loved your changeling posts! I really liked how in depth you went with each seeming and their symbolism. White wolf had... Issues with that
Yeah they sure did. These days I generally tell people, quite accurately, that Changeling 2e is a better game in nearly every respect - not that it doesn't have shit to work on, but like, you show me a perfect RPG system and I'll be like "Oh hey, Wisher Theurge Fatalist, I've heard of this before". However, 2e is not the game that ate up more than a decade of my life, so heeeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrreeeeeeeeeeeeee I am.
