'The Surrender' releases as a print tomorrow, Thursday Nov 23rd, 12PM (PT) on my store!
This piece was from my solo exhibition a few years back titled, ’Sanctuary’. The theme of the show was centred around states of mental rest and respite. This piece was about envisioning the waves of thoughts that run through your mind: sometimes gentle, but sometimes crashing swells that leave you with no room to breathe or gasp for air. But in knowing that the waves are cyclical and eventually ease, she finds herself surrendering to the motions and trusting that it will be okay.
NOTE: This gold-foil edition of this print will only be available for 72-hours & will not be available again thereafter.

I hope I get to make more works like these in the coming year!

The Ancient Egyptians believed the soul had three parts, the Ka, the Ba, and the Akh. The Ba was essentially a person’s double, a life force, and at death it was separated from the body. I thought it would be cool if the Ba birds were dead members of the EN9 (Khenti's archeology agency) who work as messenger birds or eyes from the skies! 🐦

Corvids, a genus of birds ranging across the world whose number include crows, ravens, and magpies, play significant roles in a variety of global religions. In Chinese Folklore, once a year flocks of magpies form a bridge to allow tragically separate lovers, Chang’e and Houyi to meet again for just one night. In some legends of the Russian Koryaks, the Raven-God Kutkh is responsible for creating the lands and rivers and lakes. Tales of the Lenape people say the Rainbow Crow once made an arduous journey into the heavens to beg fire from the gods in order to see his friends through a harsh winter. During the journey back, the soot of the fire stained the crows beautiful multicoloured feathers a stark black.
While these particular legends paint these birds as the heroic, selfless creatures completing arduous tasks for the wellbeing of others, or at least morally ambiguous (as was the case of Kutkh, who either willingly gave the world the sun and the moon or had to be tricked into releasing them depending on which version of the legend you read) there are many other legends that paint them in a far darker light.

The Great Pavement of Woodchester - The Orpheus - Roman Mosaic Floor
Tumblr media
A 20th century reconstruction of the Great Roman Pavement of Woodchester. Especially noteworthy for its opulent design comprising approximately 1.6 million individually fired clay tesserae. Researched and made by Robert and John Woodward in the 1970’s.

The original Roman Great Pavement of Woodchester is believed to have been laid in around 325 A.D. It is by far the most elaborate of the several hundred Roman Mosaic Floor s known in Britain and the largest in Europe, north of the Alps.
The Story of Orpheus The Great Pavement depicts the story of Orpheus, the quasi-divine musician and singer of Greek mythology whose music had the power to move trees and subdue wild creatures. Orpheus is seated in the open side of the central octagon on the North/South axis of the floor. He wears a Phrygian cap, a striped tunic and breeches and a flowing cloak which billows from his shoulders. Immediately outside the octagon is a circle of birds including pheasants, peacocks and doves. Outside the bird zone is a band of laurel leaves encircled by a guilloche. The most dramatic feature of the mosaic is the animal circle. This contains eleven beasts stalking around the floor: a Lion, Lioness, Wild Boar, Horse, Elephant, Tiger, Gryphon, Bear, Leopard, Stag and Tigress, then follows the mask of Neptune with lobster claws sprouting from his head. On either side of him are the beautiful acanthus scrolls said to symbolize the waves of the sea. The circles are enclosed within a square border and four pairs of water nymphs are placed in the spandrels. At each corner of this central square is a stone pillar base. Outside the central square are twenty four geometric panels. Almost all the standard patterns used by the Roman mosaicists are to be found in this floor. The Great Pavement of Woodchester is one of some fifty Roman mosaics depicting Orpheus charming wild creatures. These have been found in all parts of the Roman Empire and range in date from the second century to the fifth.
