The First Rule of Fanfiction

1983

2nd period Social Studies class. I slid the notebook to my friend Bethann, hoping the teacher wouldn’t notice. Scratchy writing in cheap ballpoint pen interspersed with amateurish drawings of elaborate wedding dresses.

“Nick asked me last night,” it started. The writing was my first fanfiction, Real Person Fiction (RPF), detailing Nick Rhodes’ proposal of marriage and my subsequent wedding planning. There was going to be lots of lace, lots of giant sleeves, lots of eyeliner, and lots of hairspray. And it was all going to be teal. To offset Nick’s (at the time) bright orange hair.

While I was proud of my story, and of the accompanying illustrations, there was no way I wanted anyone but a select few people to see it. I took a huge risk in showing Bethann during class, what if the teacher had taken it and read it? Instant death by mortification.

2013

Sherlock S3 preview event, with a Q&A led by Caitlin Moran. Cast and crew were in attendance, and Moran pulled out some fanfiction for the leads to read. “Moran reportedly tricked stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman into reading aloud an explicit work of erotic Johnlock fanfic that Moran had gleaned (read: taken without permission) from the fan-run Archive of Our Own. Moran assured the two actors that the excerpt she wanted them to read was purely innocent. But it was all in good fun, right?

Except it wasn’t.

"As for mildredandbobbin, the author of the now-famous fanfic, she was mortified. As condolences and support from horrified fans poured in, mildredandbobbin reacted in a heartfelt post on her Tumblr. 'I hope Caitlin Moran understands that she was hurtful and unprofessional, that in fact she used her position of privilege to belittle and humiliate,' she wrote. '[T]he one bit of contact I have with them, and it’s about humiliation and mockery.' She also deleted her fanart Tumblr out of fear that it would be more widely seen."

"Mildredandbobbin told the Daily Dot via Tumblr that she was 'appalled' that Moran had used her work 'for cheap laughs.' "

It was a highly inappropriate thing to do to them, it was extremely hurtful to me and it was terrifying for a lot of other writers in fandom to think it could have been their work being paraded around for ridicule and criticism. Fandom is supposed to be a safe space for women and we would appreciate it if journalists could respect the fourth wall and stop using our work to get a laugh during interviews.

Mildredandbobbin hasn’t shared any writing on Archive of Our Own since her work was stolen by Caitlin Moran.

In an announcement released on June 24, 2022, Channel 4 (@C4Press on Twitter) announced that it “has commissioned a new comedy entertainment series from RDF seeing celebrities reading steamy fan fiction acted out by a cast of lookalike puppets.” (https://www.channel4.com/press/news/mel-giedroyc-invites-celebrities-really-really-rude-puppet-show-wt-channel-4)

While details are scarce, Ao3 users report having been contacted through comments like “Hi there, I’m currently working on a new TV show for all about fanfiction for a major UK broadcaster. We really enjoyed reading your work, and would love to speak to you about it, and explain a bit more about our show and see if you’d be interested in being involved.”

There are so many things wrong with that, starting with the fact that soliciting works in that manner violates Ao3’s terms of service. Other fans have questioned whether or not permission will be given to use existing works, or if authors of the “commissioned” works (see C4 press release, linked above) will be paid.

Many fanfiction authors are young, or queer, or identify as female, or are young, queer AND identify as female, and that adds another layer of wrongness to this proposed “collaboration.” Youth is a time for exploration and discovery, and writing fanfiction is a great way to figure out who you are and how you occupy your place in the world. Having your exploration put on a national stage like that can be devastating. Thinking back to my own youthful and innocent wedding planning- I never in a million years pictured a scenario where Nick Rhodes himself would read it. I would have burst into flames, and it would have caused embarrassment for him too I’m imagining. No matter that I allowed Bethann to read it- I did not give permission for someone else to take it and show it around.

Additionally, having seen Cumberbatch and Freeman’s reactions to “steamy fan fiction” about their characters, I can’t imagine it would have gone much better had they read “steamy fan fiction” about themselves (ie: mature or explicit RPF). While it is widely believed that some stars (like Michael Sheen and Taika Waititi) seek out and read fan works in private, that’s a different dynamic than celebrities acting out stories with puppets on national TV. Oh. Harry. NOOOOOOO.

Saw about the possible “Rings of Power” spoiler on Twitter involving Sauron and Charlie and if it turns out to be true it’s actually something that’s to be expected and I don’t think it’s as worrying as some fans especially some Haladriel shippers think. Also the user replied to a fan saying this is actually older information they heard so it might have changed so we’ll have to wait and see if it happens, but they actually were right about stuff that happened in season 1. Putting behind a cut.

ETA: Realized the best comparison of this situation is actually Tom Hiddleston’s Loki in the MCU and how he’s the main one even though he too shapeshifts and we also now have the multiverse variants it’s going to be the same with Charlie.

So the possible spoiler is one of the new cast members announced yesterday is also going to be playing Sauron and possibly the elf form Annatar. For starters this is likely only for flashbacks and/or a few scenes with the elves. It depends on if Sauron can actually shapeshift still as in the books he’s weakened to where he can’t and even after he formed the One Ring he only becomes the beastly form we know with all the armor and saw in the movies as he cast off his “fair form” for good. Till that point and after he was Annatar he stayed in that form till the Ring. That makes me think Charlie is the main form of Sauron for the show and it matches the comments from him and the writers on how hard it was to cast him. Plus all those chemistry reads he had with Morfydd as I don’t see her really interacting with Sauron in any other form besides the Halbrand form. So he likely signed a deal for all 5 seasons just like Morfydd and most of the s1 cast. Plus these new actors are only recurring not a regular like Charlie is.

Then we also know Charlie filmed flashbacks already. This likely is to show how he became Halbrand but I think it’s likely his original Maia form as Mairon also looks like Charlie but maybe more of how the show will depict how the Maia look. Then Adar also knew Sauron in another form so this new actor could mostly be for the flashbacks with Adar. Amazon confirmed yesterday Joseph was the only s1 cast member who left as the rest are coming back and we’ve seen pics of Charlie with the cast in the UK so he’s still there and likely will now be the male lead of the series. There’s also a chance he could spy on the elves in this other form too but would be fun too if Galadriel could still tell it’s him and see him as Halbrand when the others don’t. :)

No matter what Charlie is the main Sauron but makes sense to show his other forms. I wouldn’t mind seeing the werewolf or vampire/bat forms either in flashbacks too. LOL But I also think Charlie will still be Sauron’s voice too if they use CGI for these and his armored beastly form too, similar to how the movies had Benedict Cumberbatch voice him in all forms in “The Hobbit” movies.

PJO!MorkPi: Pi has gotten quite good at changing his appearance (like his mother), but Mork is much more fond of how he normally looks. It’s time he tells Pi that.

There were many gifts which could be given from Aphrodite or Venus to their children. The most powerful was charmspeak, for with a single word spoken with confidence and power, an Aphrodite or Venus camper could bring a person or monster to their knees. Such as it was, Mork considered himself grateful that the most capable users of such a power were friends at Camp Half-Blood and not enemies.

The lesser known power to change one's appearance, however, was Mork's greatest enemy. Not its user, no, Mork could never hate Pi. He'd loved the Greek demigod since before either of them had found out about their godly parentage. But Mork hated Pi's powers with a passion for they always seemed to feed on Pi's insecurities.

Pi would start the day with his dark brown hair and Mork would watch as it shifted to black, blond, brown, red, blue, and so forth as Pi tried different ways to make himself look more attractive to anyone. As time went on and Pi gained greater control over his powers, it was not uncommon to see that Pi had changed himself to look more like a famous singer or actor.

Mork had even heard from Theo and Akk that Pi had changed his appearance entirely during their adventure and the story set Mork into such a panic that Thara and Pha had barely managed to snap him out of it.

Pete and Yo had, of course, set counter measures. Every night before lights out and every morning before breakfast, the two carefully checked Pi's face to make sure any changes he'd made through the day or in his sleep had been reverted.

"Do not lose your sense of self," Pete told Pi in warning when his powers had begun to manifest. "Mother gave you this power, it's true, but it doesn't mean that you are unattractive or undesirable. It means you have the power to see what others find attractive or desirable and to use it to your advantage."

Of course, Pi would only listen as well as he liked, no less stubborn than his siblings, godly and mortal. And so it was to Mork's great disappointment that Pi showed up to their very first official date with a nose that was not his own, eyes that were blue, cheekbones that were too sharp on a face that was too narrow.

"I heard the movie is a really good one," Pi said as he offered Mork the tickets while he was still bewildered at the current formation of features on Pi's face. "Lots of good action and dialogue." Pi grabbed Mork's wrist and began to pull him towards the appropriate theater, but Mork changed the grip and instead pulled Pi towards an empty hallway. "Huh? Where are you going? The movie is that way!"

"Pi." Mork put his hands on Pi's shoulders and felt the shorter boy tremble for a second. "Pi, why did you change your face?"

"What's wrong with this face?" Pi turned it from left to right, further increasing Mork's discomfort. "Isn't it handsome? I tried to make it look more like that Benedict Cumberbatch person."

"No, Pi. I don't like it." Pi blinked in confusion, his eyes changing from blue, to hazel, to brown, to blue with each blink. "I... Haven't I said that I like your appearance when you're being you?"

"No, you gave me a list of my flaws, one of which was my appearance," Pi argued.

"Yes, because those were things you could change about yourself but refused to out of self pity," Mork replied. "You didn't need braces anymore, your teeth had finished straightening. You just wanted to keep feeling like an outcast. You left your hair messy because you thought no one was looking." As Mork went on, Pi's face morphed to look more like a popular KPop star. "But what you didn't seem to understand is that I liked you despite those flaws, Pi. I, in fact, loved you for them."

"Don't lie to me," Pi said as he shrugged out of Mork's hold.

"Then I won't say a word. Use your powers then," Mork challenged. "Search my heart, search my feelings, and let your face change to reflect what those say I find attractive, not what your brain thinks I find attractive."

Pi sneered before closing his eyes and taking several deep breaths. Mork found himself unable to breathe until the shifting of Pi's features was over. Pi opened his eyes and pulled out a compact that Pete had clearly stuffed into his younger sibling's bag. "This is..."

"It's your face, your real face." Mork stepped into Pi's space. "The face I fell in love with."

"No, no, you really can't-"

"I can. I do." Mork cupped Pi's cheek, thankful that he felt only a teardrop and not the shifting of skin and flesh. "This is the you I love, the you I'm attracted to."

"You asshole," Pi mumbled as he leaned into Mork's hand.

"Will you believe me when I'm not being an asshole?" Mork teased.

"I'd believe you more if you were never an asshole in the first place."

"Well..." Mork took Pi's hand. "I can't change the past, but I can make a better present." Mork pressed a kiss to the back of Pi's hand and Pi felt his cheeks burn in a blush and not in changing or morphing. "So will you come watch the movie with me?"

Pi bit his lip and started pulling Mork again. "I swear to god, if you ditch me after this movie-"

Mork pulled back and Pi found himself in Mork's embrace as he caught him. "Never." Mork's face drew closer and Pi immediately pushed him away again to run towards the theater. Mork sighed and ran to follow, but there was no denying that it was the feeling of Pi accepting his feelings causing his heart to race instead of the exercise.

Oh that's a long list, let me check. So far 19, with a bit of overlap in the megafandoms (Star Wars and Tolkien), plus an original fandom. 20, if you count all the Stargate Atlantis fics I have that I'm currently pecking away at. It's… probably just easier to look at my AO3 at this point.

… No wait, 21, I forgot I used to write for Danny Phantom eons ago.

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

Mmmmmmmaybe? I try? It's a completely different type of effort than just writing fic and throwing it on the internet, which I usually don't have the energy for.

.. Probably the one where I killed Bilbo, but I've reportedly made people cry on various other fics.

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Stamp of Approval (Star Wars, gen) is the… fluffiest? Least angsty? I've been writing happy-ending fics more often, but it's not my wheelhouse to write strictly "happy" fics.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

I used to? Some of it was laughable, honestly, if a little puzzling - I used to get someone that would just repeatedly comment on my short-form fics as "not a drabble". Don't think this person ever read those fics, but it was an interesting week.

9. Do you write smut? If so what kind?

…. Yes. According to various reviewers, "hot" and "sweet" (depends on the fic).

10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?

Not really? I'm currently writing an SGA/Kingsman crossover that I'm amusing myself with, but it's not got a deadline on it.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Yes. And I'm still mad about it!!

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

I've translated my own works (sometimes badly), mostly as practice, but never by anyone else, no.

13. Have you ever cowritten a fic before?

I've had a work co-posted with an artist's work that I prompted myself on? And on a separate occasion effectively whined into cowriting on a very large and popular work that has since been abandoned by backlash - I was a beta (originally, hah), but every once in a while I still get anons asking about it.

14. What's your all-time favourite ship?

Hmmmmmm. I feel like my tastes generally change as I hop fandoms, so it really depends on the flavour of ship?

15. What's a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?

Lol probably Kintsugi. It's effectively a time-travel not-quite rewrite of Sherlock (the Benedict Cumberbatch one) with supernatural horror elements that I've been on- and off-again poking at forrrr… almost ten years now! I have to now go look up contemporary technology and trends, it's been so long 😂

16. What are your writing strengths?

Reading rhythm, allusions, characterization (somehow), thematic elements.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Keeping track of the plot, the characters, and my point.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

I think it depends? I'm definitely in fandoms that have a heavy emphasis on other languages by dint of translation or conlang nerdiness (see: YGO, The Hobbit, Star Wars) or else have characters that know other languages as a default setting (Stargate, Star Trek, Sherlock, Kingsman), so it kind of comes with the territory to at least pick up some key phrases and if you're in deep enough, to learn how to make up new words (hello conlangs). I think it helps that I have a habit of not only using hover text as well as a glossary in the end notes for mobile users/whatnot, so as to not interrupt the reading flow, particularly for desktop readers.

Danny Phantom, baaaack not quite when it was still airing. I think. It was probably still airing?

20. Favourite fic you've ever written?

As pretty of compliments as I've accrued over the years, I still don't… quite… like my writing? Imo I'm only approaching "mediocre" or "average", so it's really only an appreciation for technical goals reached the more I write. If I enjoy things enough to re-read for the pleasure of it, that's good enough for me.

The Pedro TikTok Craze…

Warnings: Mentions of sexualisation, parasocial relationships and 18+ themes

I just watched a video by Kuncan Dastner on YouTube called ‘I hate how fast we Objectify Celebrities’.

It discusses the recent flurry of fans of Pedro Pascal and how the media and TikTok/Twitter users have quickly objectified and overtly sexualised him.

As a newer Pedro stan, (TLOU was my Pedro awakening), it makes me uncomfortable seeing the vast amount of comments and edits online regarding the man. Don’t get me wrong, most edits I see are benign and more appropriate, however, there’s been a few I’ve come across using a certain scene of Pedro from Narcos that really makes me feel… Icky. As well as comment sections being filled with inappropriate words and almost verging on sexual harassment.

It’s one thing to find a celebrity attractive… It’s another to write out a detailed comment saying what you would do to them, or how you want them to do such and such to you. The ‘Daddy’ comment clearly started as a joke, but with the sexual connotation surrounding the word, it has quickly taken off into a whole new obscure direction. I don’t think there’s anything inherently wrong with calling a celebrity ‘daddy’, or ‘mommy’, if they haven’t stated they don’t like it, but using it in any other relation other than ‘they’re attractive and I love them’ personally makes me feel uneasy… So I often wonder how those celebrities must feel.

Another thing I’ve noticed is the VAST amount of smutty fanfics surrounding Pedro’s characters (or even him himself). Whilst I am not against smut, it is disheartening to go to certain tags and see that that is all that is taking them up. Maybe i’m just a prude. This isn’t me ‘coming for’ any writers who do specialise in smut writing (hats off to you, could never be me), or those who read the fics, that isn’t my point. It’s just crazy to me that the majority of fics out there regarding Pedro & his characters ARE smut.

I think the line between the celebrity and the fan has become so blurry that it’s hard to know what it means to love a celebrity. I go through multiple fixations (love that ND trait), of loving certain celebrities and characters that eventually chop and change. Hell, I’ve had/have crushes on Tom Hiddleston, Matt Smith, Benedict Cumberbatch, Oscar Isaac, Sacha Dhawan… Pedro Pascal… But I’ve never seen a craze quite like the one with Pedro recently.

Interviewers constantly asking Pedro the same questions (which unfortunately is just the media industry, they usually don’t do their research and tend to go in with questions given to them), about ‘how does it feel to be the internet daddy?’, ‘why do you think so many people love you?’, ‘what do you think about the tiktok edits?’ And so on… It must become tiresome and overwhelming. Whilst the recent clip of the interviewer asking Pedro to read thirst tweets didn’t come across as him being uncomfortable, he did deny reading them out. Maybe it was because it was a Disney premiere, or maybe it was something else. But I think that’s where the line should be drawn. Having interviewers show these human beings sexual comments strangers have been writing about them on the internet (unless they have specifically agreed or consented to reading them).

I don’t know, maybe I’m rambling and being too touchy. But I know if I was in Pedro’s shoes, I think I would start to become a little uncomfortable with the amount of attention my physical appearance was getting rather than my work. I’m not saying don’t appreciate his appearance, or have little fantasies to yourself, but I think there’s a point where it becomes too… real, when it’s publicly shared online. Let alone shown to him on a red carpet.

The man is a heartthrob, and he deserves every bit of attention he gets for his work and character, but can we please agree that boundaries exist and think ‘would I like someone to say or think this about me?’

The very first explanation of what became my favourite theory, back in August 2016, before S4 aired:

THOUGHTS AND IDEAS revolving around the possibility that more than just the second half of HLV might be a bit not real. Ok some basis thoughts for this idea: TSOT is the episode where Sherlock deduces himself successfully to be in love with John Watson. What if it is also the episode where Sherlock tries to figure out what chances there are that John Watson might also be interested in him. What does John Watson like? A male version of a commanding officer with a difficult past? Because all the nice girls like a soldier? Or a female version of a clever and cheeky woman who knows about skip-codes and is eagerly at John’s heels when the possibility of adventure and murder can be anticipated but provides also a ‘normal’ life and maybe a child?

In short: could it be possible that in TSOT we are dealing with a James Sholto and a Mary Morstan - both existing only in Sherlocks mind. Both versions of Sherlock himself. All of TSOT a sort of mind-chess to deal in his own special way with everything that happens to him emotionally. Because this is something completely new to him and he doesn’t know how to handle it otherwise.

TEH - Sherlock’s awakening sexuality. TSOT - Sherlock deducing himself into love and figuring out what John might like. HLV - Sherlock realizing that John would be bored in a 'normal’ relationship and also that he himself would not survive being parted from John. Losing John would kill him like a shot in the heart. TAB - Sherlock asking 'Who am I and what made me like this’ . Throwing himself finally in the waterfall of his emotions. Trusting John to be clever and always at his side. That leaves only his past to be dealt with … the burried skeleton which is still not found. Then Sherlock is free for John.

That’s just a very short summary of all the thoughts that kept us talking the last weeks … months? I don’t know any more. Anyway, now these ideas are out. It looks like in S4 the story goes back to Reichenbach. Maybe for more than just for solving the FALL. Remember where we left them, Mofftiss said. Maybe the real showdown between Sherlock and Moriarty hasn’t happened yet and in the end we will get John at Sherlock’s side when he is finally facing his archenemy (whoever it might be) As it always should have been. The two alone against the rest of the world.

Re: your confusion over the Moffat post – there's a scene in benedict cumberbatch's sherlock show where sherlock guesses that someone is an alcoholic because of scratch marks on the charging socket in their house (implying that only an alcoholic would struggle to slot a phone charger into the socket on the first try). The moment blew up on tumblr, and since then, a lot of tumblr users have made fun of that scene because whenever they (presumably sober, just clumsy) miss the socket, they curse the writer because they instantly remember the show/that moment😅

Benedict Cumberbatch confirms Doctor Strange’s next MCU appearance

You won’t have to wait long to find out what’s next for Doctor Strange (aside from maybe some eye drops).

Deadline reports that Benedict Cumberbatch has confirmed a return as one of Marvel’s most powerful magic users in a film “next year.”

“There are some Marvel capers in the making next year,” he said, but didn’t specify if that’d be a solo adventure or as part of someone else’s movie. Avengers: Kang Dynasty is the most likely culprit, but that got pushed back to 2026 recently.

The sort of men

When it comes to what many, if not most, Tumblr users find sexy in men there are those who prefer the more conventionally attractive men. But there are others whose tastes diverge significantly from the expected norms, when I mean by that they go after characters like Sans of Undertale or Alastair from Hazbin Hotel (or is it Alistair).

Even if there are women who do prefer the typical romance novel hero model, so much so this character shows up in slash fanart art and the like, there are others who go after a more unexpected model. I actually think this might be endemic to geek communities, where there is a line between sexy and geek sexy. Geek sexy would be David Bowie, not Marvin Gaye even though the latter was a real sex symbol to many other people.

A more recent example would be Adam Driver, a man who I’ll never find arousing in any way (I admit Morgan Nakhisa’s better looking than him). So are Tom Hiddleston and Benedict Cumberbatch, to the point where I get the nagging feeling the Geek Sexyman is practically the straight female equivalent of the Manic Pixie Dream Girl.

You know, quirky and appealing because she’s not like other girls. With the exception of Bruno and anime characters (since most of them are Japanese, regardless of how white they look), the average Tumblr sexyman is skinny, white and well-dressed. Or rather wears a suit, though for some reason despite getting skinnier not a single Jojo character’s made into a Sexyman.

Despite recently returning to Tumblr, I really don’t find these characters and people attractive in any way. But I suppose for some geeky women, they look for a man who isn’t like other men but still benefits from white privilege in a way that’s denied to men of colour. I guess it’s being nonthreatening whilst being malicious.

Sans probably got really popular not so much that he’s sexy (not even deliberately sexy as with Mettaton), but he’s quite cute and some straight women do respond well to cute characters. Though my theory doesn’t work, since he got sexualised big time. Even then, there are other factors that make him a sexyman.

Perhaps this gets stranger when you realise that Dick Grayson, despite being a major sex symbol in DC Comics, isn’t a Tumblr Sexyman most probably because he’s too conventionally attractive. Probably the same with so many Arrowverse male characters, the Arrowverse really doesn’t have its own Tom Hiddleston and Benedict Cumberbatch.

I still think there’s a difference between sexy and geek sexy, conventionally sexy would mean the men who appear on the covers of romance novels. Geek sexy would be whatever man some geeky fangirls get horny over but still benefit from white privilege. This is probably the real reason why David Bowie has a Fanlore entry but not Marvin Gaye.

I guess this theory’s way too damning in some regards, even though Marvin Gaye was a legitimate sex symbol in a way Bowie wasn’t. Geek sexymen (since it’s not restricted to Tumblr) are unconventional, but only in a way that privileges white men. Men of colour, for most of the part, are only attractive if they fulfill stereotypes.

Even then, it seems on one hand some geek women are desperate to reject the sort of men they’re socialised to find attractive. On the other hand, they still cling onto white men for most of the part. Possibly why so many Tumblr Sexymen tend to be white.
