oh you know it's all latestage capitalism but the thing is. how are you supposed to be a person inside of this. a person trying to be a better version of yourself.

oh, you started working young, which was kind of hard, but it's just the way stuff works sometimes. and it was 2008 and your family couldn't afford heat. but it's fine, you grow a spine and get used to the professional world and besides it was the suburbs we're talking about here, like, your life could have been actually hard, so what if your father lost his job and you can't afford to move or turn the lights back on. and once you start making money, it's good. you keep doing that. because now they're relying on you. so you have to do that.

oh you were in thousands of dollars of debt at 17 years old so that you could go to school, because you have to go to school if you want to get a "real" job. you even did it "right", you worked parttime and attended community college before you transferred to a public school. you were under so many merit scholarships.

which is fine. you pick yourself up and you say like, okay. i graduated college. i'm holding down a job. i'm doing the Adult Thing, which looks and acts like this, according to all the books i've read. you start with the shitty job and then you climb that corporate ladder.

but the shitty job doesn't cover rent and you stretch yourself too-thin so you get sick. good luck with that. the shitty job no longer pays for your meals. everyone asks why you don't just move, but there's nowhere to move to. and with what money are you going to be moving? and then the loans come back, because they were never going to forgive them, because you were 17 and trying to do the right thing, which was stupid. people are now saying you shouldn't have even gone to school.

which is fine. but because you have no other option, so you do the shitty job, and you apply every day for like 5 new ones, and despite the fact everyone says "there's no one who wants to work!" it's actually just that nobody is fucking hiring so you can either work for 13 dollars an hour in the shitty place you know (where at least you have a passingly friendly relationship with the manager) or you can start from scratch again with a different 13 dollars an hour without knowing how much abuse from the new job you'll be taking.

and if you quit you lose your insurance. if you quit you lose your housing. if you quit, you'll be another burnout kid. the lazy ones. these assholes, look at them!

and you come home to a family dinner and you hear from your father the same old thing. how he worked hard at his job and yes it sucked for a while but he was able to provide for the family and then the house and the dog and the rest of barbie's dream vacation. how the insurance did cover some of it. how you just really need to start speaking up more in manager conversations so they know you're a go-getter. you want to tell him - did you know we're actually doing more now hourly than any previous generation? - but you can't remember where you heard that statistic, and you're far too tired for the fucking argument. and then he starts in on his usual bit. where's the house? where's your kids? where's your ambition.

the same job the same money the same hours doesn't do it anymore. the same nose-to-the-grindstone now just shreds your face off. there's no such thing as upwards mobility, not really. and as far as you're aware, the money certainly is not trickling. you do the soulless stupid shit you signed up for because you fucking have to or else you literally risk your life (food, the apartment, the insurance), but it's not getting you anything. you download the stupid "save more" app and you budget and you do every right thing and then the price of eggs is 7 dollars and you say - oh great! another thing i have to fucking worry about now!

and you go to your stupid job and everyone in your father's generation just tells you to be better about being an adult. they have their homes and their savings account and their bailout and they say. well have you tried not drinking starbucks. well your generation just spends too much on clothing. well you might just be too addicted to travelling. and you - because you need the job - you bite your tongue and don't say i am being held prisoner and you're suggesting i stop pacing my cell if i don't like the scenery and you don't say what the fuck do you think i've been doing with my money and you don't say i haven't spent a cent on something nice in literally forever much less coffee you arrogant asshole. you open and close your bank app and check your loans and check your credit score and check fucking zillow and ziprecruiter and apartments.com just one time more. and still they give you that demeaning little grin and say - see, what you need is -

what you need is for your meds to stop being so fucking expensive. what you need is for the housing bubble to explode into dust. what you need is for billionaires to choke on their wealth. what you need is actual help. what you will get is more economic advice from people who are older-and-wiser.

Big meanie Bakugo sweating bullets on your first date, trying to hype himself up to pay. Not because he doesn't want to, he really has enough money to go around, but because he's nervous about getting any pushback from you, or getting all flustered when you pull out your card and try to fight him on the bill.

He literally nearly FAINTS when the waiter comes over at the end and you reach for your purse... slamming his money down on the table so hard that everyone in the general vicinity jumps and he goes bright red.

Thank god you only giggle, turning warm yourself as (instead of getting out a credit card) you pull out a tissue to dab sweetly at his forehead.

(He apologizes when he drops you back at home, head down and voice gruff because he doesn't want you to know he's embarrassed, or scare you off with how much he already cares... and you have to be the one to take his hands and lean in for a kiss he thinks about until the next time he sees you and you kiss him AGAIN...)

...Or, or, or when you're with friends who want to get crepes in the park, and he's immediately getting you one without REALIZING THAT MEANS you're gonna share!! Walking over with a big, strawberry banana ice cream mess he's prepared to hand off forever and going absolutely stone still when you take a bite and then ask if he wants any.

The answer is FUCK YES, of course, yes, he'd split any and everything with you, but like... that doesn't mean he knows what to do? Or where to bite so that it's not like you're kissing?? Or how to avoid people from looking and then teasing him???

tbh, i think the whole thought process behind how sylvie is written is that she is not attached to loki and her happiness doesn't at all depend on him in any way.

was their connection deep? did he impact her? "shatter" her world even? yes. this is why she is so angry at him. bc in her mind, he had betrayed her.

but he doesn't take up much more space in her mind. she goes on to live her life just fine without him at the end of both seasons.

loki is a different story, he is obsessed with her to the point of doing something completely "out of character" and being ready to sacrifice everything for her.

i personally love how "unequal" their relationship is in this way, but i understand that it's not the majority of shippers' cup of tea kind of dynamic.

this is an interesting interpretation! i enjoy getting to hear people's differing takes on their dynamic, so this was a fun read. and hey if unrequited is your trope then all the more power to you. you're braver than me, that's for sure.

i haven't rewatched s2 (and tbh idk if i ever will- it just didn't do it for me the way i wanted it to) but the consensus that "loki fell first and harder" def seems supported by s1 and enhanced by s2. which i think made it all the more shocking when she kisses him first. i love that little detail.

i have a different take, which is informed by episode 5- particularly the bar scene contrasted with the record shop scene. she tells him to go and live his life and move on, then immediately goes to a record shop, tells the man at the counter she had a bad day, and then cries to the velvet underground (it looked like crying, also possible she was just laying there and basking it all in, which is just as compelling in my opinion).

to me that read as someone who is trying so hard to place their feelings in a convenient little box and ignore them and then running away when it doesn't work.

sylvie doesn't strike me as someone who can sit still, especially not after living through a million apocalypses and trying to ensure her survival. and while getting a job in oklahoma might not be the same frantic pace she's used to, i do think she threw herself into it (employee of the month placard i'm looking at you!) so she has a new life, a new job, time to do things like go to the bar and get a haircut and listen to music and do everything possible to just. not. process. the annoying feelings that the citadel situation brings up. just keep moving! just don't think about it! and so when loki rolls up at her work, she tries to push him away, tell him he's the last thing she wants to deal with, get him to leave. the tone in the bar scene felt like that to me as well. like she's saying just leave me so i can stop thinking about this.

of course, loki does not want to leave her- it's just that for some reason he is physically incapable of talking about anything but the TVA, who ruined her life and she justifiably wants nothing to do with hearing about how great they actually are. he is pretty skilled at killing the mood. (i take great pleasure in rewrite fics that make a show of addressing this)

am i blinded by shipping goggles and my own projection onto her? it's possible! but to me it read as someone in denial. when we hear sylvie talk about her love life on the train in s1 (a scene i LOVE because it seems so out of left field for her) we get a very clear sense she has no idea what she is doing when it comes to romance (and then flat out says so during the blanket scene). her experience with romance hasn't been anything real, to the point where i hesitate to even use the term "romance"- just centuries of numbing herself by staying busy with a fling. she is like a shark that will just collapse if she stops moving. which we get to see her do in the record store!

that's just how i read it though! your read on it is just as valid and i like hearing all of the different takes. i am by no means trying to persuade you to join my pining sylvie agenda, just using this blog as a means of idea exchange. which i love doing. seriously it's so fun.

What would you say are the essence of mick and prophet as characters and as a couple? I've tried writing them before and I've always felt like I got their dynamics wrong. You're who I think of as the keeper of these characters so I thought I'd ask you and see what your thoughts are on them.

i feel like there isn't a lot of ways you can go wrong with these two because aside from the very basic facts we don't know much about them at all. like yeah they have these backstories and interactions to some point but it's up to you to fill in the blanks and interpret it as you please so, don't think too hard about whether or not you're getting it "right". As long as it's not THAT visibly out of character (for example Mick is a sniper and you can make a lot of guesses about his personality based on that) i say just write them however you want. sometimes rewatching the show to remind myself of their dynamic also helps me write. i would also love to help if you ever need a second opinion about the way you write them^

as for their essence. (p sure i got the question wrong but?) They're like two sides of the same coin to me. they're so different but also very similar. they complete each other. i like this contrast of two very opposite people being so close to each other. like a welshman and an american, a non-believer and a devout man, the younger extrovert and the older introvert type of deal. but then they're also best friends. they share similar experiences, both have pasts they don't like talking about, two wounded men uniting in their grief. also when you think about it, they were both starting a new life when they joined the red cell, Mick straight out of the army (maybe not right away) and Prophet straight out of jail, a new work, a new environment, a new life, and being the first two recruits of the team, they had to get to know each other and grow close. and seeing how well they do together now, id say that worked out pretty great. (i mean, Mick is new in the US and Prophet is starting his life after 6 years, it's not like they're gonna have much friends or family. i think it's safe to say all they had was each other when the team was first formed (and cooper) lmao)

and as for what i think makes them a great couple is that, the potential they both have to heal and grow if that makes sense? the idea of mick learning to be vulnerable and letting someone get close, or prophet letting his walls down and learning to love someone again. as i said, half of these are just how i interpret them based on their backstories , but yea. i just feel like they have a lot of potential. a lot of things they could learn.a lot of new experiences. it wouldn't be easy for them to carry their relationship to the next level but that's what i like about it. can you imagine the yearning, the angst and all the other things we'd see if any of this was real JSHSKAHEKD LIKEE

#GPT3 is a large language model (LLM) and so is trained on massive amounts of data #so what it produces is always going to be stolen in some way bc...it cant be trained on nothing #it is trained on peoples writing. just like you are trained on peoples writing. #what most ppl are worried about w GPT3 is openAI using common crawl which is a web crawler/open database with a ridiculous amt of data #in it. all these sources will obviously include some published books in which case...the writing isnt stolen. its a book out in the open #meant to be read. it will also include Stolen Writing as in fanfics or private writing etc that someone might not want shared in this way #HOWEVER . please remember GPT3 was trained on around 45TB of data. may not seem like much but its ONLY TEXT DATA. thats billions and #billions of words. im not sure what you mean by stolen writing (the model has to be trained on...something) but any general prompt you give #it will pretty much be a synthesis of billions and billions and billions of words. it wont be derived specifically from one stolen #text unless that's what you ask for.
