I debated for so long on what to ask you because we’ve talked about the show so extensively that I don’t even know what to ask, but I love hearing your thoughts and always want to know more!!! so i thought I’d ask a little bit of everything!

1 thing you wish we saw on the show, 2 wishes for season 5, 3 headcanons, 4 favorite episodes, and 5 favorite tarlos physical touches!! go!!

jen!!!!! ily <333 i hope you know i’m equally facing the same debate with what to send you ajfnskdn but here we go!! believe it or not this is me attempting to be concise. this is a warning.

one thing i wish we saw on the show: so many things that i simply cannot choose one. owen’s reaction to tk and carlos’ engagement. carlos meeting gwyn for the first time. selfishly…..more honeymoon. just….more conversations? i’ve never had a problem interpolating when things happened off-screen, but things like carlos and tk talking more about iris or their first i love you would be so lovely to see. also the 1x05 dinner that inspired me to start writing tarlos fic in the first place would be great to finally see

two wishes for season five: would love for nancy to get a big rescue moment to tie in with her backstory somehow. tarlos babysitting charlie/and gracejudd/tarlos double date. it’s been four seasons, how hasn’t this happened yet.

three headcanons: tk could cook well enough before meeting carlos, but carlos showed him how one could show love through food and how to make time in the kitchen something sacred. the 126 have seasonal non-denominational holiday get-togethers. tk and carlos can sleep fine apart but they get the best rest when they can just…wind down at night together and smother each other with cuddles and hold each other close.

four favourite episodes: truly killing me here jen…okay so i’d have to go with 2x08, 3x04, 3x13 and 4x16. this list changes constantly though, and could very well include 4x09, 4x12, 3x18, 1x10 etc etc.

five favourite tarlos touches: KILLING ME……okay every instance of emotional support bicep and emotional support face-in-neck. i truly cannot pick just one of those. carlos tilting tk’s chin up to look at him in the hot mess scene. carlos kissing tk’s bicep and then his neck during the 2x12 scene moments before disaster. TK REACHING OUT TO GRAB CARLOS’ HAND UNDER THE AURORA. and any time tk’s used both of his hands to hold onto one of carlos’ hands 🥹 (hon. mention to the background hugs……background hugs my beloved)

S3 Lizzie

I watched s3 during the break after 4x09 and Lizzie, my beloved..was something. I entirely blame the writers tho

Felt like ranting about it because of some videos I saw on it last night (early this morning).

I do understand the choice to show lizzie developing and becoming a better person by having her do things she normally does, acknowledge that it was wrong, take accountability and apologize/try to make up for it, I do but it was too repetitive. As someone who didn’t have to wait a week or two for a new episode..it felt like she was apologizing..every other episode. and it got on my nerves because if you have to apologize this often are you really growing and learning from your mistakes. Like someone said it was 2 steps forward, 10 steps back

and I swear it felt like she was doing worse things than her s1/2 self? I know lizzie called alyssa an orphan before but she was under the influence of a monster, idr if she said anything else about her like that before but the comment in s3 was too far.

the finch thing is a complicated issue for me, but some comments made me realize how it just didn’t make much sense for lizzie to do what she did given the people she grew up around. someone said she shouldn’t have assumed because she doesn’t know finch but to me that’s partly it, she doesn’t know her and that’s a whole other issue so moving on. so yea, lizzie did another bad thing to a character and yes she apologized etc etc but it just...didn’t make it better like..

and probably an unpopular opinion but it’s not lost on me that most of lizzie’s fuck ups in this season link back to josie somehow which is why I can’t stand their relationship, they have their cute moments but..yea. It felt like lizzie was overcompensating to the point where her every waking moment was josie josie josie. I know lizzie only worrying about herself was the problem but this was not the solution. Josie was out there trying to live her life, be more independent and then there was lizzie like...don’t write my girl like that? (literally that one episode where josie was talking to finch having fun and she reads lizzie’s note saying don’t worry about me and her whole mood just dropped cause she wasn’t thinking about her at all and now felt bad for it...???) nearly every one of her efforts to be a better sister failed miserably, like the show is just obsessed with not letting lizzie do anything right. At the end of the day she was always the bad sister no matter what her intentions were and even though it doesn’t matter anymore cause the show is cancelled that’s why I’m kinda glad josie is gone? it’s sad she lost her connection to her or whatever but theirs is a codependency I just can’t get behind

this rant made me realize that one thing I don’t like about lizzie is that she doesn’t know when to stop and things always end up going south, a character flaw I’m afraid because it’s very much consistent

Favorite Eddie looks and favorite worst Eddie looks (I feel like this would mainly be hair choices).

FAVORITE EDDIE LOOKS MY BELOVED (I don't have visual aids, but if anyone else wants to add them, PLEASE feel free) in no particular order:

1. The Suit(TM) in 5x01. Yes, I know he had a panic attack, but I am a simple woman and only human.

2. Fluffy Helmet Hair Eddie from 4x06 and 5x02. He looks so good and so soft, I just want to run my fingers through it.

3. CROSSOVER EDDIE (yes, the all caps is deserved).

4. Slutty V-neck Eddie (yes, I know it's actually a short sleeve henley with buttons, but it will always be a v-neck in my mind)

5. Medic Eddie in the ambulance in 4x09...Jesus Wept.

6. ...post-panic attack shirtless hospital Eddie (no one judge me)

Favorite Worst Eddie Looks...that's just all of S3 with the bad hair XD (but especially the two moments, one I think is during the tsunami and one during the street fighting arc where the styling is so bad that it looks like he has a terrible combover and I can't unsee it)

I'm sorry that you were disappointed with Outerbanks, but I'm selfishly very happy that you're continuing to work on the amazing GG fic idea! I also love reading your thoughts on the show. I was curious to know your favorite moments of season 4?

bahahaha i actually am kind of glad i was disappointed with it too because i'm so excited about this fic idea, i don't want anything to distract me from it. even if i never actually make enough progress to post anything, just working through what i hypothetically want to happen has helped me find closure in the unresolved ending we got with the unexpected cancellation (but i do want to actually write the damn thing and post it haha).

i'm so glad you're excited about it too! this is such a sweet message and it makes me want to work on it even more : )

as for my favorite moments of s4? jeez, i don't even know. s4 was such a mixed bag for me. there weren't a lot of things i was lukewarm on. i either really hated or really loved what was happening and i'd have to do a rewatch but luckily i've been going through my tag so i've got some ideas. here are some of the stand-outs:

rio looking at beth like she's lost her damn mind when she asks his bartender if they've got anything without caffeine or alcohol

the whole 'mazel tov' exchange

beth putting fitzpatrick in his place with 'oh i'm sorry. was i supposed to enjoy it?'

annie leveling up and doing right by ben because she really truly loves him more than anything in the world

'heroin and hookers?' 'so obvious' and just the entirety of that conversation because it was one of the few times beth was really truly being honest, despite the fact that she was using that honesty to manipulate rio (which is why it worked so well tbh)

ruby thinking stan was cheating on her for all of one day before confronting him and them moving past it in zero point two seconds flat because their relationship is built on trust and respect, even if they've got a boatload of other problems right now

the entirety of 4x06 and the fact that rio was using his family to manipulate beth but he played himself like a damn fool! introduced his crime wife to his family and then got all protective and possessive and !!!!!!! the introduction of nick into the fold is one of the best decisions the show's made in a long time. it gave us so much insight into rio as a person, into his history, into his business operation, and into his feelings for beth. like????? i truly could not ask for more!

i also love that marcus was just sat there quietly the whole time and did not say a single thing about how he already knows beth both from the park and from the rhea situation. kid's already learned snitches get stitches and he ain't saying shit.

and i mean obviously there was another thing that happened in 4x06 that was fine i guess. :)

ruby giving beth shit about her sexual escapades as is her right as a BFF

dean was actually funny this one time

the bench scene in 4x09, my beloved. i love everything about it. it is the perfect brio scene to me. i don't know how to explain what it is about this scene that does it for me but there's just something so... intimate in what they're acknowledging and what they're not saying. 'sometimes it's worth it' should imply that this time it was worth it but when rio admits that he got the black eye by being himself it negates that. sometimes being himself isn't worth it. sometimes being us, doing what we do, isn't worth it. sometimes all of this doesn't feel worth it. it sucks. and this is the first time since 2x09 that he's acknowledged that this shit isn't easy. 'it's lonely at the top.' but this time there's also this undercurrent of resentment and anger between them so he's not nice about it. it's lacking the softness that 2x09 had but i actually think that makes it more authentic? he's not trying to comfort her. he's just... saying it. because he means it. because he's fucking tired and who else is he gonna say it to? there's no one else. there's just her. so he says it and he's a dick about it and he makes a joke about getting her something special that's meant to be snide and he leaves her sitting there on the park bench by herself and still, still, doesn't it feel like they're both a little less alone for it?

stan and beth finally having it out. i actually hate this because i think it's so unfair and yet... that's what makes it so good. stan's words are so cutting. it's the kind of fight you can only have with someone you've known for twenty years and let the resentment build and build and build and now there's nowhere else for it to go except straight to the heart of the other person.

dean walking in on beth and rio being frustrated with each other and maybe realizing for the first time that he understands nothing about what's going on at all because it doesn't seem like they even like each other all that much and somehow he's the intruder. it's not about sex, at all. it's about the fact that this stranger is privy to a part of his wife he didn't even know existed.

the re-centering of the girls' relationship and how when it comes down to it, they would do anything for each other. their lives don't work without each other. they don't all want the same things but they do want each other. they need each other and i think the final stretch of the season demonstrated that.

rio's sad boi hours. never in a million years did i think we would get something so explicitly about his personal feelings??? i don't even have words for this. he was really going through it and i could not be more thrilled.

mick loves the ice capades

diane's a patriot

nick's 'that was before jesus got involved' line was REALLY funny to me and i laugh every time i think about it

you think you'd have her? because beth is the only thing that matters to him in that moment! he's got tunnel vision.

rio! returned! her! furniture! and! told! her! he! believes! in! her! and! he's! ready! to! stop! playing! games! he really was so afraid of losing her that he was like 'okay it's time to get serious i'll get down on one knee if i have to' like homeboy was not playing around.

annie learned how to pick a lock and she did it in character!!!

rio knocked because he listens and he wants her to know that!!!

and he is DELIGHTED to find out that beth isn't in bed professionally or personally with nick

i mean really i think it's safe to say that i'm ecstatic with everything that happened in that last two episodes with beth and rio (and subsequently how quietly the boland marriage actually ended).

so i think i'm going to leave it at that because this list is already pretty long, and it's not exhaustive by any means. it's pretty limited to what existed in my tag, which was admittedly mostly brio, but yeah. lots of good stuff to work with this season! what about you?? what were your favorite moments?

It was a peaceful Thursday afternoon, and the Knights of the Round Table were gathered in Gaius’s chambers. Gaius himself had hurriedly vacated the premises when Merlin had bounced in with the five of them, muttering unspeakable things under his breath.

Elyan had got stuck in almost straight away when Merlin suggested they try and learn magic, and was a very quick study. Or maybe he just didn’t sleep. Either way he settled himself crosslegged on a table in the corner with the spellbook Merlin had lent him, already too advanced for this particular class. The other four for one reason or another had little patience or time to read from books with tiny writing in them, and Merlin had offered to teach them directly.

“Ok!” Merlin clapped their hands and adjusted their very-pointless-seeing-as-their-shirt-did-not-even-have-fastenings robes nervously. They weren’t used to being the centre of attention, especially sharing something that for so long had been so dangerous.

Lancelot grabbed their hand and smiled at them encouragingly. They smiled back at him.

“We’re going to start with some rudimentary spells just to… see what happens really. I’ve never taught anyone before, so…” They trailed off anxiously.

“What about-” Gwaine opened a book at random and squinted at the cramped text. “Ye-hair-amay-wan-nicht-“

“Not that one love!” said Merlin, hurriedly pulling the book away. “That one wakes the dead.”

“You can do that?” Lancelot asked cautiously.

“I’d be surprised if Camelot has any dead left at this point,” Leon muttered.

“Of course they can Lance!” Gwaine wrapped his arms round Merlin’s waist and laid his head on their shoulder, gazing into their eyes with utter adoration. “They can do anything.”

Merlin snickered and bent down to kiss him. Lancelot rolled his eyes fondly and moved to hug Merlin too, kissing their cheek and the top of Gwaine’s head.

Leon sighed. There was the sound of fake retching from Elyan’s corner. Gwaine flipped them off and Percival too for good measure who immediately looked upset because he hadn't even said anything. Elyan gathered the big knight in his arms and glared at Gwaine.

“Ok so!” Merlin cleared their throat. “I’ve picked out some beginner spells for you. Levitation, starting a fire, colour changing, that sort of thing-“

“I’ll take fire!” Gwaine said quickly, eyes gleaming.

“Here we go,” muttered Elyan, opening his book to look for a water spell.

“Ok!” Merlin said somewhat apprehensively. “So, you just say the incantation and…” They stopped biting their lip pensively.

“And what?” Leon prompted. “If it was just the incantation Gwaine would’ve raised the dead a minute ago.”

“Hmm,” Merlin hummed. “I don’t actually… know.”

“What?”

They shrugged helplessly. “Well I just sort of… do it? I don’t know… just point and think I guess?”

Fifteen minutes later, chaos had descended.

Leon was out cold on the floor, charred debris floated through the air, there were several small fires still burning around the room, and Elyan was hyperventilating he was laughing so hard, hugging what appeared to be air, but was actually a distressed Percival who had somehow managed to turn himself invisible.

Merlin had grabbed their two boyfriends and was huddled with them under a table with their arms around them protectively, apparently choosing to ignore that they were the main instigators of the pandemonium. Lancelot was gingerly feeling his singed eyebrows, and eyeing Gwaine with mild horror. Gwaine meanwhile was looking rather pleased with himself and his pyrotechnics, drenched though he was from Elyan’s attempts at extinguishing, but he had yet to realise that his hair was bright blue.

I am curious: what are your favorite scenes from your main ships (date, dair, derena...)?

scenes involving milo don't count, sorry!

for me, it's really not just scenes, but body language & just in general, how they are with each other, you know? dan and serena grin at each other and hug SO much, you can tell that being around each other in s1 made them both so happy, and even after that glow fades the way they look for comfort in each other... top level stuff. the way blair looks at dan... we never see her as radiant at any other point. she was not looking at anyone else like this. and gosh, dan and nate. they're both so comfortable around each other that there's absolutely nothing weird about like. discussing that one ex girlfriend whom they both share AND both were in love with. there is literally no other duo who trusts/enjoys each other's company so much that they're comfortable in a love triangle. (probably because they're more in love with each other than with the girl, but that is not the point. or is it?)

anyway, more specific answers. under the cut. this is one of the longest answers i've ever written on this blog possibly but you KNEW that would happen when you sent this ask, didn't you? (affectionate)

derena: i tagged one of my ds reblogs as 'the grumpy one is soft for the sunshine one' and like. look at them! this hug from 1x10 kills me in the best way. they are both the literal embodiment of :D when they see each other! i love 1x10 as a whole moment, their entire thing at cotillion is so sweet and they're both so happy. the fact that he is talking about his chemistry teacher during this kiss in 1x07. that bit at the end of 1x05 when they talk about their siblings (being there for their sibling because of fallible parents being a derena parallel makes me simultaneously really sad and really soft, tbh). 1x05 gives me SO MUCH SECONDHAND EMBARRASSMENT but the way they walk off together arms around each other does something to me - these are two people who are still getting to know each other but who really like what they see, and who trust each other and. are just having a good time together! back when derena was my OTP, the 1x11 "your story's about me?" was absolutely a fave, too, and i still adore it, albeit in a different, more nostalgic way. i like a dan who writes cute stories about serena. no empty shell sabrina van skoneker bullshit. she is so much like you, daniel! you'd be shattered if she did this to you. don't do this to her. tbh, most derena moments from s1 are just A+ romance. the bit in 2x02 in the jitney is so funny, they're SO bad at being exes. the bit in... 3x03 i think?? i don't remember... on the contrary. when they're talking about dan's fling w/ georgina and serena's relationship with carter, the ease with which they talk and how happy/supportive they are of each other's new relationships... yeah. love to see it.

i also really like any instance of them having honest/open conversations. 1x13, talking about how serena is concerned about blair. 1x08, serena talking to dan about feeling jealous of vanessa. this bit from the touch of eva or whatever that episode is. 4x04 i think. this is the conversation everyone is trying to get dan to have and he's avoiding EVERYONE else. derena interactions in 3x21 (can't find a gif right now) - the fact that dan is with serena when her dad abandons them, the fact that he goes all the way there with her. 2x07, "i'm really glad you're nate's friend. he really needs someone like you right now" (though i'm cheating, that's technically a d/n moment too klhdflkgf). there's a bit in s4 where he's advising her against having an affair w/ colin, i don't remember the ep number, but the way he takes her side so easily and naturally and puts due blame/responsibility solely on her professor... yeah. 4x10 i think this ep is?? idk. but like my tags say, im sentimental about this moment because while what dan was doing was irresponsible, sneaking her out of the ostroff, he was the only person in this episode who was actually talking to her and listening to her and taking her seriously. nobody else was doing that!!

i probably have more moments i'm not remembering, but we're only 1/3 into this answer and LOOK AT THE WORDS, good lord, i'm sorry.

dair: my favourite dair episode is hands down despicable b (5x21) which i have heard is an uncommon answer. i just love the conflict resolution of it all, okay!!! 1x04 & 2x08 are like. standard answers any dair shipper will give, and i'm no different. i love dan being able to give blair advice and blair actually taking his advice even though they're not friends yet!!! be right back, yelling at the intimacy of it all!! 5x16, with their getting together (this little kiss and dan being so startled by it), blair admitting a flaw she genuinely does have and dan saying it's not awful because it's her, which is just. romance at its finest. those vows, good lord. 5x18.... they're having fun! blair showing up at the loft in lingerie for dan... the delight on her face.... (i know this moment blows up in their face but when she's there she looks so happy and proud of herself and this was like THE moment when i was like. oh. dair is really the heart of this garbage show huh).

i think for me, the thing that really sells dan & blair together is the serena of it all. both of them love serena more fiercely than anyone else, and that is what brings them together. (fwiw i definitely think nate loved serena this much and this deeply, too; the writers just wanted to pop the serenate balloon, which even i think was extremely unnecessary and ooc.) but (& i have so much meta about this) their relationship grows beyond serena. their entire s4 arc is SO good. i love how comfortable around each other they are, in such an adult way, in the sense of like. they both bring so much stability to each other? morgan tagged this edit "the marrieds" and like. yeah. b offers to help him shave. they're having breakfast & reading the paper together.

all the love declarations we got that weren't a simple 'i love you.' be your charming wonderful self (how could she not love you/ tell me what would make you happy, dan) i told chuck he doesn't have my heart anymore (you spent your life earning the keys to set you free when you were free all along!!!!) dan's pep talk to blair in 5x21 (already linked a gifset earlier, here's another one if you want i guess). there's definitely more... but honestly, the way the dair arc was executed was so good - while i do have my complaints, i also think keeping those aside, it was SO close to perfect. i love dan & blair's banter and gradually becoming closer and closer and closer. it felt very organic and real and GOSH. the way penn & leighton looked at each other while playing dan and blair...... it's just SO MUCH.

date: this is the hardest, because it's. *screams*. maybe you saw me losing my mind over those 2 seconds of nate handing dan a waffle? i love almost every scene with these two, even the hellish s6 breakup scene. my favourite episode for d/n (& also favourite gg episode in general) is 2x06 - i love the homoerotic subtext of it all. nate pretending to be dan because dan's name is the first name that came to his head. dan flirting w/ nate while tied to that thing, in his underwear. them becoming friends. and 2x07 as a follow-up to that! dan getting nate to live in the loft with the humphreys for a while. i am so soft.

4x09 is a terrible episode in general, especially for serena my beloved, but the d/n moments in that one? off the CHARTS. this weird overly macho flirting, in some ways THE most iconic d/n line. this entire finish each other's sentences nonsense. someone (i think it was ana but im not sure?) compared the energy of those scenes i just linked to the book blairenate love triangle resolution, blairena choosing each other over nate in the books, date choosing each other over serena in the show (if only! RIP.) after the saints & sinners ball, this cute little moment of 'youre the only one who understands me. please tell me they went home together. i mean. how could they not have.

3x07, them watching vampire porn together. a tag i used on ao3 (& also on here, once) is 'nate brings out the himbo in dan'. here is a prime example. 'is she levitating?' i don't fucking know, dan, what do you think?? (i was telling my partner that that's what i love abt dair vs date. around blair dan is an intellectual, a librarian, an art historian, a museum curator. around nate it's like dan is competing to be #1 himbo on the show. can my girlfriend actually fly? i don't know, dan. i can't believe you're seriously asking such a question.)

3x12 pep talk. (sorry about the shitty quality!) essentially nate telling dan that he (dan) is hot and that he shouldn't talk himself down so much.

dan making nate gay in his book. you know. his book from which blair found out he was in love with her. nads (who i will not tag in this billion word long gushy meta, because i value her sanity) once called inside "wish fulfilment' and. i mean. yeah

nate checking dan out at the derena wedding continues to be hilarious. hilarious in the same way as dan sexually fantasising about nate. canon really went 'let's give ivy some special easter eggs' and i appreciate them a lot!

i love the way they are around each other - so quietly attuned to each other. i showed my sister my date!husbands gifset, and she was like. yeah they're so married. and it's just stuff like how dan looks for nate over his shoulder, it's not even an active action, it's as easy and natural and intuitive as breathing, checking to see if nate is still there.

oh, that wasn't as hard as it could've been! okay. cool. im SURE there's more things i could scream about, because it's DN, the fact that they're non-canon makes me THAT much fiercer about them than dair/derena, to be honest. so many dots to connect!! anyway.

1. Favourite season?

SEASON FOURRR look. season 3 is a close second. it introduced Albert, for one thing. but season 4 gave us Jee-Yun, it gave us -waves hands- everything in 4x14. jinxed. treasure hunt. beautiful women (obviously Taylor, but also Karen <333 and Ana is pretty too). I got to see Eddie flirt with someone and it not feel like he was pulling teeth (Charlie's mom my detested). 4X09 BLINDSIDED MY CONFLICTED. Buck Begins??? Maddie angst??? step dad Buck??? 911 operator May? Athena angst? ALBERT ANGST???? and we got to see the Lees again!!! Eddie and Buck being dilfs. everything Chimney has ever done. Hen my beloved. hands down season four.

2. Favourite episode?

4x06 Jinxed or 4x13 Suspicion for wildly different reasons. (OR 5x01 PANIC I can't pick skdfhajh) Jinxed is, as one friend called it, an island of joy in a sea of angst. I've seen it many times. Suspicion is because I know what's coming and the tension just builds and builds and then BAM the last few minutes just. kill me. 5x01 Panic because it's about Eddie 🥺🥺🥺 (and many other reasons but. Eddieee)

17. Favourite friendship?

HEN AND BUCK. Hen and Chimney are a very, very close second but. Hen and Buck. she was his big sister before we knew about Maddie. they support each other so much. they care so much and they LOVE each other. the scene in s1 where they're playing video games together lives rent free.

19. An underrated moment?

Carla coming to see Buck in the hospital after the truck bombing. I can't remember exactly what she said but it was something like, of course she was gonna be there! it's a funny moment, but it's also just... sweet?? I just love Carla and Buck's relationship so much.

20. Most heartbreaking moment?

Chimney crying at Albert's bedside holy shit it gets me every single time.

29. Opinion on the fandom?

I think... like every fandom, there are people with some wack opinions who I just avoid lol. I feel like there are probably a lot of younger people watching, just due to the way the lawsuit is usually handled in fic, and also because people just despise every woman who comes between Buddie in any way. (sigh.) but on a more positive note, the creativity is off the charts. the fics in this fandom are amazing, the art is beautiful, and I love how we're all in this same boat of being incredibly stressed out by the show but still loving it kdskafj

i think: MY BELOVED. i really, really, REALLY need to know their meet-cute origin story in canon. GIVE US THE FLASHBACK, NBC YOU COWARDS!!!!!!!!!!! things i love about them (the list is endless but i will make and Attempt): how they are so, so tender with each other. i have BIG FEELINGS for how ruby and stan are so physically soft and affectionate with each other. their chemistry is this wonderful blend of comfortable fondness and genuine sensuality and several years' layers worth of intimacy and trust. i think their (healthy) relationship is portrayed realistically, because they aren't always 100%. they have their disagreements and arguments and misunderstandings. they've both gone on separate moral journeys over the show, but they're always meeting each other at the intersections of their growth, and that's been such a fun thing to watch over the seasons in my opinion. they've always been able to get back to one another, and they're always looking towards the future - together. when they're in a tight spot, my heart aches for them, and i'm always, always rooting for them.

4x09 Chapter Sixty-Six: Tangerine

We’re awake.

Present day Betty starts and ends the episode in bed.

The gray and pink henley first showed up in 105 (yes, that long ago), but we last saw it in 315.

MAYbe the tartan flannel pants she wore in 407, maybe not.

Well. I saw this sweater, instantly leaned forward and said—out loud, alone, to my computer screen—’that sweater.’ The first thing I thought of was Monet’s Water-Lilies, and so I’ve been thinking of it as the Monet sweater ever since. (Please see catalogue numbers 1789, 1803, and Water Lilies (Agapanthus)—that links to the far right panel of the piece, please do use the super zoom.)

Hard to be so precise on the jacket in her arms—she’s got a number of fuzzy-collared numbers. Perhaps it’s the plum-collared bomber with the pink collar that first popped up in 313—the stripe on the cuff is similar.

She wears this navy-and-green tartan crewneck—and this gorg coppery gold eyeshadow—for most of the ep.

Please take this moment to appreciate Betty’s appropriately citrusy bed linens. She’s actually been sleeping on these for several episodes, but we must admit they have a nice resonance here.

I think Betty wore this pink v-neck in 405; lighting makes it a bit difficult to confirm. As it is—not the first time we’ve see her wear a pink v-neck to bed.

The blue polka dot pants are new though!

Doing some gentle math, and yet acknowledging that Riverdale exists in its own...time bubble, this places the murder-y flash-forward bits in February? And the arrest-y ones later on in the spring semester.

But February break is not spring break!!!! Spring break typically coincides with Easter, but is usually standardized to March or April in the US (it varies by state, because states run their own educational systems.) February break—winter break, also a week long, isn’t even taken in some states, poor bastards—has never to my knowledge had the connotations of fun in the sun that ‘spring break’ does. This is retcon, surely.

It’s the Maple State, don’t dwell on it.

Whatever. Dino’s presence here adds yet another bomber/letterman-style jacket to Betty’s seemingly infinite array of outerwear (it’s a twin of her other reversible Coach jacket.) Her bedroom closet presumably has Narnia-level dimensions.

The turtleneck appears beige-ish, and the plaid mini seems apropos, as she is ‘killing’ Jughead, Plaid King of Riverdale. Jk, but as has been mentioned several times, Betty in tartan is often a nod to Jughead—and she wears it (by my count) three separate times throughout this episode. Just observations.

Summary: Lucky seven. Two sets of pajamas, one outfit for bébé Betty, and one flash-forward look—homicide casual.

I Own This: Did I stalk Monet sweater over the holiday season, and did it finally hit 50% off, and did I buy it? Reader, fuck yeah I did.

Backpack 2.0?: Betty doesn’t even appear at Riverdale High this episode.

The fucking dinosaur count: I can’t believe it’s come to this.

Best outfit: Mm. Tartan sweater? I like navy-and-green. Pink coat? Monet sweater. They’re all solid.

Dueling Fairytales. Or: Why Lucifer won’t take a Queen.

One of the most popular fan theories is that Chloe will become the Queen of Hell. The appeal is strong on the surface as it does several things;

- It codifies Lucifer and Chloe’s relationship into a formalized, wedded partnership as King and Queen.

- It answers the question “What will happen to Lucifer and Chloe when she eventually dies?”

- It elevates Chloe to a seemingly exalted position, which is coded as a reward.

The trouble with this theory is that if Chloe became the Queen of Hell, that would undermine the major themes of the narrative. To emphasize my point, let me pose a question.

Is the story telling us that Chloe needs to become worthy of Lucifer or that Lucifer needs to become worthy of Chloe?

Actually, let’s flesh this question out a bit more.

Does Chloe need to go through trials that test her commitment to kindness in the face of abuse to be elevated to a higher status in order to receive Lucifer as her reward? Or does Lucifer need to learn restraint, a higher degree of empathy and to be on the receiving end of kindness in order to grow up so that he can learn, not only to give and receive love, but the responsibility that comes with a duty of care?

If these sound like two completely different stories, you’re absolutely right. The first one is Cinderella, the second is Beauty and the Beast. And in regards to the question of the Queen of Hell, they’re both relevant because these two tales are dueling in Season Four with the introduction of Eve.

The Cinderella Story

Cinderella; a girl who has no control over her life, serving a cruel family that takes advantage of her and erases her identity in service of the family’s needs, but whose kindness, compassion and empathy in the face of grief win her friends that help her escape her prison and find freedom.

Fits Eve to a tee, doesn’t it? She’s highly empathic, makes friends at the drop of a hat, even with people who are inclined to dislike her - i.e. Ella and Chloe. She’s kind, but not stupid. She only needs one look at a situation with all the actors in the room before she can pick out what’s going on between Lucifer and Chloe.

What makes Eve’s story highly compelling is watching her abuse her virtues attempting to fulfill the themes of her own story, which ultimately causes her to fail.

The central theme of Cinderella’s story is her commitment to kindness in the face of her family’s abuse. The one thing the Cinderella cannot be, if she is to succeed, is selfish; to allow it would be to invite that poison into her own psyche. That isn’t to say that the Cinderella is doomed to be a doormat either. She rebels by going to the ball (or in Eve’s case, to Earth). However, there is a difference between standing up for yourself, acknowledging your own needs to be valid and worthy of consideration versus prioritizing your needs over the needs of others, irregardless of what they feel.

Which is exactly what Eve does. Her pursuit of Lucifer is highly selfish.

Lucifer is telling Eve “no” in multiple ways, including verbal at the end of 4x04. He doesn’t desire a relationship with her, he’s trying to work through something very painful and he’s not in a good place right now. He is in love with someone else and Eve knows it.

Unfortunately, what Lucifer wants is irrelevant. Eve wants him and she intends to have him because Lucifer is her second chance - Adam couldn’t love her because he was remained in love with Lilith, but this time will be different. This time Eve thinks she can win. So she pushes him into showing her his Devil face and pours balm on the wound inflicted by Chloe when she kisses it.

What Lucifer misses in that moment is that Eve’s easy acceptance of him as the Devil is a giant red flag in and of itself.

The Virtuous Daughter

The Beauty; the member of her materialistic family who prizes practicality, hard work, and making the best of any situation in the face of ruin. The one who will sacrifice herself without hesitation to protect the ones she loves, who puts her needs last.

Chloe is a homicide detective instead of the virtuous, youngest daughter, but the Beauty is often characterized by her devotion to duty - filial duty in particular. Sure enough, who is Chloe emulating? Her beloved father, the cop killed in the line of duty.

Beauty and the Beast is a more interactive tale between the lovers than Cinderella. It is through cohabitation with the Beast and learning about each other that the Beast learns to put others’ needs above his own, rising above his former self absorption while the Beauty learns to accept the goodness within the Beast, not only for his attempts to do better, but for who he is as the Beast.

This is literally the story of Season 4 - of Chloe coming to terms with Lucifer being the Devil and reconciling the fact that she is in love someone she’s been told is the personification of evil. It takes her the entire season to fall in love with the Devil as opposed to the Lost Prince (echoing the earliest written versions), who she’s been in love with since Season 2, and it comes in stages.

- 4x02, the ax scene when she realizes that Lucifer’s love for her is genuine, soothing her fear that, once again, like with Pierce, she’s been used as a pawn in a game she had no idea was being played.

- 4x05, when she throws herself between Lucifer and the anticipated explosion. The moment they both realize Chloe would sacrifice herself to protect the Devil.

- 4x07, when Lucifer chooses justice over punishment and brings Tiernan into the station, sacrificing his own need for vengeance and proving to Chloe that the Devil is a good man. Chloe is still bifurcating Lucifer, but she acknowledges that he is both angel and Devil in that critical scene on the balcony.

- 4x09, the traditional recognition of the Beast and the Prince as the same person, when Chloe realizes that his Devil form is a manifestation of Lucifer’s declared self-hatred.

Chloe’s love is not a redemptive object the way Eve wants her love for Lucifer to be. The transformation from Beast to man requires Lucifer to understand and forgive himself - Chloe can’t do it for him. Chloe’s acceptance can serve as a guide on that path, but Lucifer must do the work himself. He clings blindly to the idea that Chloe’s acceptance will either save or condemn him in a single moment - and when he attempts to force the issue he’s unable to accept Chloe’s “I don’t know” as an answer.

The Prince Of Darkness

Lucifer ends up caught in the middle of these two stories as each of them casts him in a very different role. The show frames Lucifer’s struggle between these two opposing visions of who he is as good and evil, but there’s something to be said for the idea that Lucifer would simply like to know which story he’s in, thank you very much!

Is he Eve’s Prince? A static, perfect figure that she will receive as a reward - her vehicle of escape and self-actualization?

Or is he Chloe’s Lost Prince? A man, trapped in a form not his own, battling his own worst impulses in order to regain the original identity he has lost?

And, in a twist, each woman assigns qualities of the other tale to their version of Lucifer - Eve’s Prince is a bestial version - Lucifer as he was in the Beginning. Primal, impulsive and living entirely in the moment with no care for the consequences of his actions. Chloe’s Lost Prince, however, is more of a tragic figure; sundered from himself, split into two - Prince and Beast.

The Beast is a protagonist of his own tale, but both as the Beast and as the Prince he is an object of rescue, which is not something Lucifer needs or wants from Chloe. Lucifer has no desire to be saved - it’s a concept that we’ve watched him actively reject before, when Amenadiel suggests that the return of his wings means he’s been forgiven. Chloe’s role in the tale is to learn to accept the Beast, letting go of the Lost Prince.

As the Cinderella’s Prince, he’s simply an object, not a man. Lucifer’s role as Eve’s Prince is a vehicle to elevate her to an exalted position that will remove her from the prison she’s lived in most of her life to a place where she will be loved.

It’s only after Lucifer rejects both Eve and Chloe’s objectified visions of him that he’s able to look at himself and get to the core of what has been torturing him since, arguably, the beginning of time. He is neither Prince - instead he is a man in nearly unspeakable pain as he sits in Linda’s office, knuckles white as he finally identifies and articulates the problem - his self hatred.

The King and Queen of Hell

Both Cinderella and the Beauty share the traditional raising of status, but in Lucifer’s case it’s worth asking - is becoming the Queen of Hell a good thing?

I would argue that question actually has nothing to do with either Chloe or Eve and everything to do with Lucifer himself and why he became the King of Hell.

Both Cinderella’s prince and the Beast’s royal status are their original identity. But in Lucifer’s case, becoming the King of Hell is the curse from his Father. However you interpret God’s motive for punishing his son, the bottom line is that Hell is somewhere that Lucifer hates. It is not, nor has it ever been, home to him. It’s not a place that he is proud of, nor does he relish the work he does there. He has enough pride to do the job to the best of his ability, but we know he’s delegated out as much as he could, even if Lucifer’s hands are far from clean.

In short, Hell is nowhere that Lucifer wants to be. He certainly doesn’t want anyone that he actually cares about to be there either.

Eve, however, needs Lucifer to be the King of Hell. The first half of 4x07 is, from Eve’s perspective, the high point of their relationship. Lucifer is the most intimate he’s ever been with Eve when they’re lying in bed after punishing Julian.

Of course Eve wants that back - enough that she’s willing to listen to Kinley when he tells her that, if she wants Lucifer to love her, she needs to convince him to go back to Hell. As much as Eve recognizes that Lucifer doesn’t want to rule Hell, it’s where he could “be a King again,” which is exactly how he was acting when he was closest to Eve. And, of course, ruling Hell would be different “with a Queen by his side.”

So she, once again, succumbs to selfishness - and is called on it by Chloe in the wake of it’s consequences. “How could you be so selfish?! Naive!”

Eve had already lost Lucifer, but her attempt to force her ascension to become Lucifer’s Queen only crystallizes that they’re not right for each other, as she’s faced with losing Lucifer’s friendship and respect. He would have to be the one to elevate her to that exalted position and he’d already told her “I don’t like who I am with you!” rejecting the role of Prince to Eve’s Cinderella.

Lucifer’s desire to be his own man, aligns much more closely with Chloe’s desires. Chloe has no need for pomp and circumstance. She’s always been the practical member of this partnership - sensible shoes, boring sedans, Costco runs and reading a bedtime story to Trixie. There is room in her life for desire, but Lucifer’s presence is enough to fulfill that.

In fact, in the moment when Chloe tells Lucifer she loves him and begs him not to leave, she is finally asking for something for herself. The Beauty has learned to allow herself a healthy dose of desire rather than a complete devotion to duty while Lucifer, as the Beast, has learned the value of love, empathy and a duty of care. Chloe and Lucifer have transformed each other into better, more complete versions of themselves.

Presumably, if Hell can be faced and fought in Season 5 and Lucifer released from the burden of the throne, then having the “curse” lifted might allow him to leave the Devil in the past and simply be Lucifer Morningstar, the identity he’s fought for since the pilot.

But, of course, if that happens, then Lucifer will no longer be the King of Hell. Therefore, he has no need for a Queen.

And They All Lived Happily Ever After?

The time for despair has passed - neither Lucifer nor Chloe can afford it. Instead, they (and we) are awaiting the reversal; the change in the status quo that will give them the opportunity to challenge Lucifer’s fate. If they are successful, then there may in fact be a new Queen of Hell, if Lilith comes into play.

But if she appears, she will likely not be Lucifer’s Queen, but a new ruler come to usurp the throne.

Long live the Queen.

I have never seen an episode of Once upon a time. I want to start by watching the whumpy episodes first.😁 It seems like you're the right person to ask.😂 Which episodes would you recommend?

Oh! Oh! I’m definitely the right person to ask!!! :D

However, I can only really answer for Killian Jones whump, because… Well, you know ;) That’s kinda my forte XD

The very best Killian whump in the entire series occurs in episodes 5x13 and 5x14, when he’s in the Underworld, and has been tortured by Hades. Unfortunately, we don’t get to SEE the torture, but he looks delicious all wounded and covered in blood because of it. And in 5x14, Hades chains him up from the ceiling in a literal “slow dipping mechanism” the likes of Dr. Evil XD He also gets rescued by Emma and is an adorable bloody cinnamon roll.

Actually, Season 5 has a lot of great stuff in it. He straight-up dies in 5x08, and it’s super dramatic and everything, but he also gets chained up and angsts all over the place and everything. 5x10 is full of Dark Hook fun, as well as him getting impaled on a sword (and not giving a fuck, lol) and some super duper angst as he turns into the Dark One at the beginning of the episode. And Dark Hook is just… really dark and angsty and wild-haired and everyone loves him. I mean, all of US love him. The other characters… not so much XD Oh, and Hook dies again in 5x11, because dying is something Hook does best XD Then there’s the tortured!Hook episodes I mentioned above… and some more super duper angst in 5x20, which is simply heartbreaking T_T

Speaking of him dying, he also dies in episode 4x22, where he’s been “rewritten” by the author to be a coward. It’s cute to see him cowering from danger and being a cute little guileless bean. And his death is nice. He also dies in the big finale of the series, 7x22. None of his deaths “stick” of course ;) But each and every one of them is delightful and fun to watch XD

If you like bondage, the final 30 seconds of episode 2x19 are the best 30 seconds of bondage in the entire show. The rest of the episode doesn’t have Hook in it at all, so you could just look at the GIFs here on my blog XD Really, for a lot of the episodes, you can check them out on my blog to see most of the good shots and even some video clips. Check out my Episode Guide :D

Episode 4x08 (might be 4x09, depending on the episode counting of wherever you view the episodes, it’s called “Smash the Mirror Pt. 2″) sees him getting captured by Rumplestiltskin, tied to a fence, taunted, and then getting his heart ripped out by Rumple. Nice stuff :D The episodes immediately after it, have Rumplestiltskin holding onto his heart and controlling his actions through it. Lots of angst and frustration; it’s really a nice story arc :)

Episodes 2x11 and 2x12 are good, too. Hook goes off the rails a bit, and attacks Belle on his ship - and she beans him in the head. Then Rumplestiltskin shows up and beats the ever-loving shit out of him. Then he reappears later, all bloody and hot, and ends up getting hit by a car. 2x12 picks up right after, with him in the hospital, being questioned by Emma.

In 3x20, he gets drowned in a shallow tub, and gets some mouth-to-mouth rescuing from Emma. It’s very nice :D

Hook Centrics (episodes focused on his character and flashbacks pertaining to his past) are always good for some whumps. 3x05 has a LOT of emotional whump, with the death of his beloved brother. 3x17 has lots of pirate shenanigans, like a swordfight (no injuries though) and him getting accosted and threatened with a knife. 4x15 has some emotional whump, some tentacle squeezing, a kidnapping, a near-drowning… and more shenanigans. 5x11 has emotional whump and a gut-wrenching death scene. 6x06 has TWO kidnappings, a kraken attack (kinda legendary around here, lol), and a brief beating - plus lots of angst. 6x17 sees him chased by Lost Boys, captured by Tiger Lily, attacked by Lost Boys again, and almost burned at the stake before a last minute rescue arrives. (The two episodes before 6x17 also have a lot of Hook content, with him getting shanghaied off to another realm and trying desperately to get back to Emma. 7x02 is tons of fun, with TWO versions of Hook whumping each other. And 7x13 is full of a lot of dark angst and whumpiness, when Wish Hook (Hook #2 lol) angsts over his daughter being trapped in a tower, engages in a duel, and gets his heart poisoned - leading to lots of pain and suffering. Whew!

The series closes out with some penultimate Hook whump in episodes 7x19 and 7x20, when Hook gets kidnapped by Mother Gothel and tied up in her underground grotto. Not much detail given to it, but it’s still nice - and the heart poison activates again (pain! yay!) and he ends up on a stretcher by the end of it all.

2x09 sees him getting his heart mangled by Cora, who just really likes hurting hot men, apparently, and that’s something I can totally relate to XD

He doesn’t get whumped himself in episode 4x02 - but Emma gets trapped in an ice wall and is slowly freezing to death and he adorably freaks out the entire episode, angsting all over the place in the cutest possible way. Some very nice emotional whump through the whole episode.

2x08 has him held against a wall with stone loops and threatened with his own hook in a ridiculously sexy way by Cora XD and 2x05 is fun, because he gets tied to a tree and threatened with a knife at his throat by Emma. Neither of them are really “hardcore” or all that long of scenes, but they’re both fun

Hook also gets punched in episode 2x21. This isn’t all that great from a whump standpoint, but I’m pretty sure Colin adds “PLEASE PUNCH ME :D” into all of his contracts, so I should probably mention it XD

There’s also a lot of lesser, smaller whumps throughout the series. I catalog them all in my episode guide, but I don’t want to list them all here, because this post is already hella long, lol XD

I mostly only know/remember the Killian whumps, but I do know there’s some other good stuff in there, too. If you like lady whump, Regina gets whumped really good in episode 2x20. And there’s an episode on Season 1 (the season we don’t acknowledge on this blog, because Killian’s not in it ;)) where Prince Charming (played by Josh Dallas) gets captured and imprisoned by the Evil Queen so he can’t interfere with her plans to kill Snow White - and much angsty “NOOO!” nonsense occurs inside his cell XD
