Robin Hood Rewatch: 1x13 A Clue: No
Tumblr media
“Previously on” recaps can be annoying, but there is an art to it and I love a good one. This is a very, very good one, summarising the last episode with ramping tension as the music builds, then cuts to a different take of the last scene as the theme song starts, and we’re into the opening credits.
This is a long one, so it’s going under the cut:
Guy estimates that the “inner circle” of Robin’s gang is “a dozen at the most” and I find it very funny that neither he nor Vaisey have twigged that it’s always the same five people around him. What’s more annoying than funny is that they don’t know how many are in the “outer circle” because that really should have been A Thing in the show (Forrest and Hanton should have come back to guest star! I will never let this go!) After all, we see Little John with more men in the first episode, there are other outlaws in the forest/across the shire that are either working with Robin, or pose a risk to them, and I wish this had been explored.
Tumblr media
Djaq manhandling and holding her sword to Pitts’s throat - I love Djaq.
The first arrow Robin shoots is intended for Vaisey, but one of the guards inconveniently walks in front and gets it in the chest. The second arrow is intended for Vaisey as well but he ducks (”my tooth!”) so we can’t fault the writing for a credible attempt at Why Doesn’t Robin Just Kill The Sheriff, because in this scene at least, he tries.
Bye Pitts. You certainly were.
I actually really love this scene (which probably seemed odd given the high body count), but Robin drawing his sword and charging, with Much, Djaq, and John backing him up to avenge Marian’s apparent death/make a final stand, as the music shifts from the jaunty Rescue Theme to Marian’s Theme, just gets me every time.
Although thanks to the cast commentary, I can’t unsee Djaq flipping that guy over her head twice, but hey, it’s a badass move. Clearly they didn’t shoot enough coverage of this fight, because we get the same action from several different angles.
Other than the flashback in episode 8, I think this is the only time we see Robin in Crusader mode, and just how lethal he (and the gang) can be when unleashed and with nothing to lose. Even when the enemy retreats Robin remains kind of wild-eyed with rage unsated, and it takes a beat for him to snap out of it. It’s symbolism time - he sticks his sword in the ground and leaves it there, and we don’t see it again this episode (or much in season 2).
There’s some nice acting going on from everyone in this scene - just utter exhaustion, Allan and Will oblivious to why the rest are so distraught, Much taking it upon himself to tell them but can’t say the words, and Robin with the finality of “she’s dead.” Their faces!
Tumblr media
Djaq is still holding two swords as she enters the cave, which is a nice character beat - no doubt the fight also brought back unpleasant memories/triggers for her, and she remains on edge, for the moment unwilling to give up her defences even when the threat is gone.
I really love this scene too (the gang mourning Marian) and I think it’s quite deftly written - Djaq’s immediate reaction being the importance of a quick burial (as per Islamic tradition), Robin trying to keep it together, attempting to ask John/Will to build a coffin but unable to, so deflecting to ask Djaq to prepare Marian’s body, before trying twice again; John soothing him and taking charge. Will’s single tear and speaking of Marian’s goodness. Much responding with “Good? Oh, she was... She was...” looking to Robin because of course his thoughts are for Robin’s grief before his own, and also that his own relationship with Marian was complex. Allan: “She was alright...yeah” that says so much, and of course John’s “Her, we liked.” Again, some fine acting, kudos everyone.
“I loved her and I never told her” is ironic because Robin still won’t tell her until halfway through the next season, and if he had in the aftermath of her apparent death he could have spared himself a lot of the angst of the rest of the episode. But of course he doesn’t tell her, doesn’t learn from this moment, because emotions are hard, and sometimes we make the same mistakes over and over again.
I really love that it’s Allan that notices that Marian is alive, and his little “told ya” flourish.
Score note: while Marian is “dead” her Theme is strings, when she opens her eyes, it’s back to the guitar.
Tumblr media
Guy’s guilt in finding out his impending marriage to Marian is based on false pretenses - would he still have forced the marriage if he’d known that from the start?
Djaq still has her two swords as they take Marian back to Knighton.
Guy, if your first instinct when told Marian is not at home is that she’s run away rather than marry you...maybe take a hint? “She cannot run from me” is a big yikes, and this confuses me as to Guy’s motivation in this scene. Did he intend to tell Marian the truth, but then convince himself otherwise (because “the excitement of the wedding” =/= “the wedding excites her”), but then why so angry when he thinks shes run? The difference between getting someone go/being left, I suppose.
Illness is a perfectly plausible explanation for delaying the wedding that no one seems to think of.
Edward is actually pretty bang on in this scene with Robin from a father’s perspective, telling him to let Marian go if he cannot stop it, and do the right thing. On the other hand...
“I am sick of doing the right thing” is why Robin is such a compelling character for me - because it is hard to always be good, to be held to that higher standard, and make the unselfish choice. I enjoy narratives that explore that, and this show is surprisingly unflinching about it, exemplified by:
The next scene, which is one of the most emotionally brutal/hard to watch of the entire show, in which Robin lashes out and does everything to drive Much away, including calling him “a pox”  and a “small man” until Much’s heart visibly breaks.
Tumblr media
Now I don’t want to excuse Robin here, because he is objectively awful to someone who doesn’t deserve it, who is trying to give him support but also telling him some much needed hard truths (even if it is slightly self-serving, which is what what seems to set Robin off). But at the end of the day, if he loves Marian he needs to accept that it is her choice to marry Guy, to “do the right thing” to (she thinks) protect her father - and later of he does just that. For now Edward and Much are both right, it is more important for him to try and protect the king from Vaisey, because if he is ousted and Richard back on the throne so many lives would be improved, including the people of Locksley. But Robin has been pushed to breaking point all season, and has now snapped and can’t see reason, but is stuck in his own grief/rage.
But unlike previously, when Robin said regrettable things in the heat of the moment and then immediately took them back, this is a calculated attack designed to hurt Much the most, because he loves Robin so much that it takes A Lot to push him away. It’s a bold move to make your hero so unlikable in such a moment, because Robin really is unforgivably cruel here, and trust the audience to understand why. I mean, I don’t want to bang on about the PTSD, but it’s (partly) the PTSD, based on a triggering, precipitating event causing a self-destructive spiral. Robin needs some Ye Olde Therapy.
Tumblr media
For all the talk about Robin getting his title and lands back, nothing is said about what happens to Gisborne once he does, other than that they can’t prove he was the one who tried to assassinate Richard. Because really, Richard probably would believe Robin even though the tattoo was burned away, and Guy’s certainly committed other crimes that could be testified to just like they’re intending for Vaisey - and let’s be real, it’s not like a king needs evidence to order someone’s death (hello, season 2 finale). Boom - Guy executed, marriage to Marian annulled, problem solved!
So, the scene between Marian and Guy, in which Marian is more concerned with whether or not Guy tried to kill the king than the fact that he stabbed her. But its understandable, because Marian thinks there’s no way out that doesn’t risk her father’s life, and it’s easier to convince herself that maybe Guy didn’t do it to make the best of things. I think she does have some kind of feelings for him, or is at least moved by his feelings for her, and believes if nothing else she can influence him/continue working from the inside; giving up the mantle of the Nightwatchman but doing the same work (in a different way) as Lady Gisborne.
Tumblr media
And then it’s Robin/Marian angst, round 3, and it’s a far cry from their interaction in the cave milliseconds away from “I love yous” - in both tone and body language they’re back in defensive positions talking past one another. The tension, it be thick.
Marian is making her best rationalisation with “deprived of love” and Robin not at all buying the Woobification 101. Once she tells him her decision to marry Guy, he accepts it, but it’s Marian’s reaction that’s telling, she’s surprised that he doesn’t argue, deep down she wants him to fight for her, to say that the real reason she shouldn’t marry Guy is because he loves her. It’s quite a contrast from the previous scene where Guy was very open about how he feels about her, while Robin deflects, but while she was conflicted about Guy trying to kiss her, she’s frustrated, disappointed, and angry when Robin leaves.
But really, this is rather unfair of Marian, because Robin did already declare himself in the cave (”we should be together”) without her reciprocation, so expecting him to take the first step again without any encouragement is a bit much.
Tumblr media
Would a depressed person sit slumped against a tree all night?
“But by taking Marian in holy wedlock, I will wash away those crimes. Her pure heart will cleanse mine.” Yeah...not going to touch that one. I appreciate that there’s a lot going on with Guy and many, many people find it compelling, but I’m afraid it’s not really a narrative that interests me.
Speaking of pure hearts: Much. Faced with the same choice he was counseling Robin on, but with the additional wrinkle of knowing the king’s an imposter, he still decides to stop the wedding. “Her heart belongs to another” is A Moment and I don’t know exactly why but I find his very soft pleas following this and calling her “my lady” very affecting.
Tumblr media
She’s beauty and she’s grace, she punched Guy in the face.
“A trap. I knew it.” I haaaaate this line. NO YOU DIDN’T KNOW IT ROBIN YOU KNEW NOTHING OF THE KIND IF YOU HAD KNOWN YOU WOULD BE EVEN MORE OF A DICK FOR LEAVING UGGGHHHH.
Tumblr media
“We can’t be seen together” Right in front of my salad two guards on front gate duty, who get front row tickets to the kiss. Look at them! They’re right there! This show drives me absolutely bonkers sometimes.
I do love this dress though.
“An audience with the king has been suspended!” Going out on one last pun.
Regardless, I really love this episode. Despite the lack of fallout from the emotional wringer they all went through, I can’t help but smile when the gang does their silly little jump for joy at the end.

30 Days of BBC Robin Hood Challenge
Day 10: Favorite Series 1 Episode - 1x13 A Clue: No
Being the finale of Series 1, that episode literally had everything for me: Marian alive and well recovering from her wounds like a badass. Robin freaking out because he’s about to lose the love of his life and doesn’t know how to cope. Marian in a wedding dress. Guy looking good as always (especially in his wedding attire.) Much being his wonderful self and ringing that bell in order to stop the wedding and save Marian, which annoys Guy, but works. Marian running away to see Robin coming in to save her, telling her these exact words: Do you take this horse and man as your route out of here? To which she replies: I do! The sheriff getting what he deserves. And let’s not forget the group photo above of how the season ends with the gang cheering after they saved the day once again. *Chef’s kiss*

I didn’t mention it when I was there on my rewatch because I was going to make a gifset about it, but since I didn’t end up doing that I just want to acknowledge what Dean said to Cassie in 1x13:
Dean: So just then, why did you ask where my brother was?
Cassie: Nothing. Not important.
Dean: Could it be because, without him here it's just you and me? Not you, me and Sam which would be easier?
Yeah because it’s not like this is a tactic Dean uses all the time in order to avoid addressing his feelings. I mean we’d be here all day if we started listing every instance, but how about just looking at 12x19 in particular? After the whole mixtape nonsense, Dean’s anger thaws and he opens up, at least a little
Cas, you can't – With everything that's going on, you can't just go dark like that. We didn't know what happened to you. We were worried.
And while it’s true that Sam cares about Cas and was worried about him too, that’s not what we saw and that’s not what the show focused on. We were shown Dean worrying, Dean’s endless phone calls, Sam comforting Dean about Cas’ silence.
And then Dean continues:
Dean: We will find a better way.
Cas: You mean we? ( proceeds to use the mixtape to gesture between the two of them)
Dean: Yes dumbass, we. You, me and Sam we’re just better together.
I always talk about how that whole mixtape exchange (and 12x19 in general) is equal parts cathartic and frustrating because they’re both teetering on the edge of opening up to each other - they’re saying just enough so the other can understand their mindset, but they’re not being fully honest. When Cas was asking for clarification on what “we” meant, he wasn’t talking about Team Free Will, he was talking about him and Dean. And yet Dean brings Sam into it. Because it’s easier. Because Team Free Will, their familial relationship, that’s something uncomplicated, something he understands. Just Dean and Cas though? What exactly that “we” means is not something Dean is prepared to deal with, not in that moment. Not when Cas is waving around that mixtape all but asking what Dean meant by it, when Dean hasn’t even quite managed to reconcile that with himself just yet. Answering that question would mean confronting some long ignored truths and messy tangled feelings that have gone unaddressed for a very long time.
That’s certainly not simple.
Cas tries to do the same thing; when The Empty asks him why he wants to return, he responds with “Sam and Dean they need me.” But Cas can’t play that card, not with someone who has “tiptoed through all his little tulips” and knows exactly how he feels, who he loves and what he fears. If you notice, when Cas returns from the Empty he doesn’t really play the “we” card in relation to his feelings for Dean anymore, not the way he used to at least. He knows, the angels know, the demons know, hell there are moments where even Sam seems to know a little. Cas isn’t hiding anymore, he’s accepted what he feels, and in the end he makes it abundantly clear to Dean what the difference between “we” the family and “we” aka ‘you and me’ means to him, that the familial “we” only exists for Cas because of that bond he formed with Dean, because he fell for him and learned to love because of him.
By finally being so direct with Dean, by clarifying the difference between “I love you. I love all of you” in a way he didn’t do back in season 12, Cas also forced Dean to confront the truth of that too. He can’t hide behind “Cas loves us” anymore, rather he has to acknowledge that yes Cas loves them all, but the love he feels for Dean is fundamentally different, and Dean has to come to terms with what that means for him.
Honestly it’s something Dean was already doing for much of s15 because their break up/make up was very much just about the two of them, something Cas made abundantly clear. Sam, Jack and even Mary really had nothing to do it with it, it was purely just about their miscommunication, their needs and their feelings. At it’s most basic level it was about their desire to just be seen and understood by each other.

1x13 “The Whisper Box” analysis
“I am stuck in a dream of my perfect life”
This is one of the first things Nancy says after realizing she is in an alternate reality, confirming for the audience that what we’re seeing is essentially, in Nancy’s mind, what would be a perfect world. If she could take the life she currently has and turn it into what she considers her perfect reality - this is how everything would look.
That established, let’s dive in.
The first and most obvious difference is that Kate Drew is still alive and cancer-free. What I find fascinating is that in Nancy’s ideal reality, her mom does still have a cancer scare - but what makes this so great for our heroine is how it draws upon the most earth-shattering event of her life and alters the ending. It’s much more poignant for her this way, because instead of eliminating a negative situation altogether, this scenario rectifies it, vicariously allowing Nancy to relish in the flood of relief she always wanted.
This universe sheds some light not only on Nancy's emotional attachment to Kate, but also her attachment to Kate’s death. Ever since she lost her mom there was a dark cloud over her life. Nancy’s key to escaping this head trip of hers (and moving forward from her grief) was to say a final goodbye to her mother - something she never got to do in real life - and this, in an ironic and bittersweet fashion, grants Nancy closure and peace. She had to let go of her heart to find her way home.
Carson is only painted in a positive light here, because at this point in the show she has finally arrived at a good place with her dad. She feels grateful for that and would not change anything about him or their relationship.
We learn that in this universe she doesn’t even know Nick yet, let alone have a romantic history with him; they do, however, still exhibit their prior pattern of experiencing and acting on their chemistry. This is not a surprise given Nancy’s emotional state in real life. Nick was the one to initiate their break-up, so while he still cares deeply for Nancy, Nancy is the one who was blindsided/rocked the hardest by their split. The show makes it clear she isn’t over Nick at this point in the timeline, so it’s not surprising that being with him is part of her ideal reality. Their never having met in the beginning is symbolic of Nancy’s desire to start over with him. She has a lot of regret regarding how she handled things with Nick and would love a clean slate to conduct a do-over.
Another notable point - in the real world, Nancy has recently caught Nick and George together in some 👀 moments. Given that she still has feelings for Nick, it makes sense that his fast-tracked bonding with George might bother her on some level. Hence, in her perfect life, Nick and George have already dated and ended things on a sour note. One less thing for Nancy to worry about.
In Nancy’s perfect life, George is more open and affectionate. I find this super sweet. By now Nancy has really come to value George’s friendship and she simply wishes that George wasn’t so weighed down with stress and emotional walls. Therefore this version of George is happy, carefree, and fully comfortable in her own skin - they also appear to be much closer in terms of friendship.
I’d like to reiterate now that Nancy’s perfect world is first and foremost founded on her reality. With that in mind, rather than changing all the details of Bess’s life to grant her something more favorable than living out of a van, she simply wishes for her friend to make the most of the situation. In this universe we see Bess living it up, embracing her unusual lifestyle for everything that it is, and also having become a social media star. Here she is positively glowing. Nancy’s greatest wish for Bess is to be happy, thriving, and free from anxiety.
On multiple occasions in this episode it’s mentioned that Ace is pretty much the same. This show in its earlier stages often treated Ace as the ‘comic relief’, so a very shallow reading of this episode could dismiss these as throwaway lines; but given Nancy’s psychological revelations regarding literally everyone else, I truly don’t believe his role would be so trivial. Therefore, without getting TOO dramatic or shippy about it 😜, I think what we can take from this is that there’s genuinely nothing about Ace that Nancy wishes were any different. From where she’s standing, he seems content with who he is and has become an important part of her inner circle (per 1x08, she considers him her friend). I think that Ace is still maybe a bit of a background player for her at this point (remember this is pre-library scene), but he’s such a steady and dependable one that there’s nothing about him she would want to change.
Ryan Hudson is a charitable man who is doing The Most for Horseshoe Bay, using his power and influence only for good. This is the man Nancy wishes Ryan was, instead of the one who’s made countless destructive decisions and caused far more harm than good. Plus, a smaller detail, but Ryan’s hair is much more natural and un-moussed in this reality because he is unconcerned with upholding a certain image per his family name (and, if we expand our thinking here, this version of Ryan may have cut ties with his family completely). Ryan is more comfortable with himself here, as there is no overhanging sense of guilt re: Lucy Sable or even Tiffany.
Lucy is still present via the ghost under the sheet, taking the form of Hannah Gruen and dropping Nancy the clues she needs to further her investigation. Nancy’s connection with Lucy is far too strong to be broken by any universe - but since both Kate Drew AND Tiffany Hudson are alive in this timeline, it’s unlikely that Nancy would know much at all about Lucy Sable. Therefore she doesn’t make any physical appearances.
It says a lot about Nancy at her core that so much of her ‘perfect life’ is about everyone around her being happier, healthier. And based on Nancy’s surprise at the idea that “you all like me” in this universe, it appears that she does still struggle with some of the anxiety her mother said she had. Of COURSE her friends like her, but it tells us a little something about Nancy’s inner world and psychology. I think that detail is a GREAT take on the Nancy Drew character. It makes her a little more vulnerable without removing any of her courage, her boldness, or her strength.

Meta: Echo’s Big Fight in 3x09
Let's talk about the Big Echo fight. Because wandering around in the fandom this past week, I’ve seen a lot of very specific conclusions as far as what they were or weren't arguing about, and I’m not sure my take on that scene really aligns with other folks. So let me try to break it down a bit and give y’all an alternative perspective on it.
To start with, the scene opens with Max on edge because they're breaking and entering. Liz is singularly focused on the mission, and he's kinda freaking out. Instead of responding to his concerns, Liz gets straight to business.
"Ooh, ooh, this is interesting. Heath left Genoryx two days after I did. Must have realized he didn't need to be working underneath their corporate thumb."
Liz is kinda projecting here. Heath never once displayed any discomfort with Genoryx as a company the way that she did. He wanted her to stay. He wanted the resources there. We know these things as an audience, and Liz would too if she was thinking through the big picture at this point in time.
Max, on the other hand, doesn't know any of that. Here's what Max hears from Liz: he hears surprise. He hears Liz acknowledge that this is unexpected news. And right as he’s processing this unexpected reveal...Max sees Heath's Wild Pony t-shirt.
Weird coincidence #1 from Max's POV was Heath (the guy who is currently so pissed at Liz that he won't take her calls) supposedly rescuing Liz's science out of the good of his heart so that Genoryx doesn’t get their hands on it? This doesn't add up.
Weird coincidence #2 was Heath quitting Genoryx - a decision Heath made that Liz wasn't expecting.
The Wild Pony t-shirt is now the 3rd thing that doesn't add up. And if the t-shirt clue isn't adding up for you, see my post about it here:
The T-shirt is strike 3 for Max. He can't really pretend that he's not suspicious of Heath anymore. So he broaches the subject with her.
"How much do you know about this guy, Heath? How close were you?"
Max is feeling uncomfortable and looking for more information. He's trying to make the clue make sense. Why would Heath have the T-shirt? Does he have a connection to Roswell that Liz doesn't know about? And Liz doesn’t listen.
"This isn't the time to be jealous about a boy I met."
For all that Liz is clinical and on mission, she jumps very quickly to assuming that Max is NOT on mission. Yes, Max is inherently more emotional than she is. But throughout the episode he's been asking questions about Heath and NOT JUMPING TO CONCLUSIONS. That's one of the keys to me here. Max really is trying to give her the benefit of the doubt about him.
At Liz's house, he asked about "the boyfriend" but he wasn't doing it in a jealous or judgy way. If anything it could almost be interpreted as concern. He started with "were you happy" and only when Liz kind of metaphorically admitted that any happiness was a façade...that's when he brought Heath into it. And yeah, Liz says that he impacted her life and helped her grow, but she didn't exactly express romantic feelings that would make Max jealous. So when she basically jumped straight to the jealousy assumption instead of actually discussing this with him, he starts getting worked up. Because she is not hearing him. She is not acknowledging that the facts they have found during this investigation are not adding up. So he is honest and blunt about what he's thinking.
"I'm just saying it's possible that he took your one-of-a-kind alien spores and quit, so that, just like you, he could use the research himself, free of Genoryx."
Max is the one who brings the science into this conversation. Not Liz. And he's not criticizing or questioning HER application of the science. He's questioning the trustworthiness of Heath. Because the lies are starting to jump out at him like a friggin’ neon light.
BUT — now that he's specifically brought up the science, he has her attention. Because Max questioning her science is HER sore spot. So what does she say back to him? Something kinda judgy.
"That grand trust speech certainly had a short shelf life."
Side note: I really don't think there actually was a "grand trust speech" in this episode. I can think of a few scenes where there might have been an opportunity for one. In particular during the milkshake scene when he admits to saving her tapes. But they actually don't talk about trust in that scene. They talk about having hard conversations. They talk about moving forward instead of looking backwards. But they don't talk about trust. My guess is that there might have been content cut for time at some point in this episode, that may have included some grand declaration from Max, but that's really just speculation on my part.
Regardless…Liz's response to Max bringing up the science is to basically accuse him of not trusting her. Which is not what he was saying. He was not questioning her use of the science. He was questioning her trust in Heath through the context of her science. So he elaborates on what he IS saying, and as he does, he's getting more and more worked up...because this does relate directly to his personal fears, and, frankly, his buried trauma that he's never properly addressed.
"I trust you. Okay? But I don't trust some guy I have barely met with a secret that could endanger me, could endanger my family and break the frickin' Internet if it came out."
Max doesn't know Heath, and he doesn't trust Heath with a secret that could endanger Michael and Isobel. His emotions are escalating, because now he's thinking about the science that scares him in the hands of a guy that all signs points to being potentially untrustworthy, and he's triggered.
BUT he doesn't back up his argument. He doesn't point out the very specific evidence he's identified that Heath is probably lying to Liz.
And Liz is inherently reactive and sometimes overly defensive (see 1x09 list of Liz's flaws). So even though he's focused on Heath, she immediately reacts defensively and takes it as a criticism of HER.
"You think I would let myself be conned?"
"No, I think you came out here looking for a partner, and it could blind you."
*deep breath* and this is where it starts to get personal. And rough. Max isn't entirely wrong here. But he also kind of is. Liz didn't choose Genoryx for partnership. She was looking for resources, freedom to do the science she wanted to do, and to save her father from deportation.
But partnership? Yeah, Liz wanted that. But she wanted that from MAX. She was looking for partnership in life, not in science.
And now that Max has thrown that direct criticism out there, Liz is going to throw a bomb right back at him.
"Just because you sabotaged me when I thought you were mine does not mean that Heath would take the same path."
Ouch. This is the hardest line in this whole scene for me to work with. Because it is combative. And purposefully hurtful.
BUT…she is NOT TALKING ABOUT HER SCIENCE. She has not said a single word about her science in this argument. She moved past that. She had the epiphany that she was wrong and she apologized (3x03). That is in the past for her.
This argument, for Liz, is about betrayal. This is about her believing that they were going to be partners and move their lives forward together (2x12), and right when she believed in that future, Max made another massive decision that directly impacted her life (just like he did in 1x13) instead of working with her to make big decisions together.
"And just because you changed the wallpaper doesn't mean you've mended your blind spots."
I really hate this "change the wallpaper" line. It feels like they're mixing metaphors. Liz called her life a commercial. Max is saying that she's changed her decor. Like...pick one and stick with it.
That aside… I think this barb is about her arrogance. Earlier in the scene, she seemed baffled at the idea that Max believes she could have been conned by Heath, because Liz is used to always being the smartest person in the room. She thought she was smarter than Diego and he figured her out. She believed her lab was secure, but Diego (possibly) got in. Sometimes, like most scientists, Liz is so bogged down in the complicated, brilliant details she’s thinking through, that she misses simple things that contribute to the big picture. And I think that's what Max is getting at here. In her arrogance, she believes that she can control the Heath situation. But she's not acknowledging the human factor here - that Heath is a person who may have his own unspoken ulterior motives driving him. Just like Diego did. She's just not seeing what Max is seeing.
BUT - again I'll say. Max is also not communicating the scope of the evidence he is collecting. They're both wrong here.
"I have learned my lessons, but you... oh, my God, you sound an awful lot like the guy who blew up my lab. So forgive me, but you're making it perfectly clear why I felt like I had to go and change the wallpaper."
This is the only line where Liz even comes close to talking about her science, but again, she's talking about his betrayal. She's talking about him undermining their partnership. She's talking about her need for a change of scenery from HIM.
And that’s when Max blows out the safe and they put the fight on hold to finish their investigation.
But, to sum it up…the fight was all about trust and betrayal. It was necessary for them to work through it, though frankly? I wish they could have finished the discussion. Because instead of them coming to some sort of peace with their trust in each other, the truth came out about Heath, Liz realized that she was wrong, she apologized, and they moved forward together, on mission.
I can’t help pointing out though…after the fight and Liz's epiphany about Heath, Max and Liz spent at least 15 hours in a car together. And I'm sorry, I refuse to believe that they didn't talk about anything important for 15 hours. Fic writers assemble? 😆
Many thanks to @ober-affen-geil for doing a quick review and checking me on opinions vs facts. Very important.
And for my next trick… road trips, life choices, and Robert Frost! Coming soon to a Tumblr near you…

SDMI 1x13 is hilarious because when Destroido employees are attacked, instead of solving his own mystery, Ricky decides that he'll jump through hoops to leave notes in a packet of snacks for the Scooby gang to get them to solve the mystery for him. Like, what was that about? Clearly he's good at solving mysteries because he knew the answers to all the mysteries for which he left clues for the gang. So why didn't he tackle this one himself? Was he trying to stay anonymous in case the mayor was looking into Destroido closely now that their employees are attacked? Like, what happened?

I don't necessarily agree that there was no build up for 3x08 it's just that we got so used to the big Alex/Michael/Malex scenes in the previous seasons never having any positive impact on their future and everything being meaningless that it's now very confusing that so much of their previous growth as a couple and as individuals suddenly had a big payoff in one episode after so much stalling. We've seen Alex open up to Michael a bunch of times before about his feelings/what Michael means to him. 3x08 wasn't new. 1x09, 1x13 and 2x04 were all huge only for the show to immediately undermine them by Michael misunderstanding things for no reason/having no real response/reaction to it after and putting them back to square one over and over again. Now we got a whole episode with them talking from Michael clearly communicating his hurt about Alex shutting him down to them compromising about Deep Sky and the show subverted all of our expectations with Malex actually taking a step forward instead of everything once again turning to shit for more drama. We could have gotten the same exact development a season and a half ago and it wouldn't have been weird at all. It was the show we were originally promised. Now that they put Malex on the same page for the first time ever fingers crossed we get more emotional consistency in storytelling going forward.
The major issue I have is what a lot of people including Tyler and Vlamis expressed, is that the show wrote itself into a corner of it both being absolutely far too long to justifiably have Malex not be together, but also not showing us this season in scenes or dialogue where Malex are at with each other because the show committed to that year long time jump after a season that ended with Michael walking out on Alex's song, and Alex kissing another man and starting the season a year later, still kissing that same man. Yeah, we've had two previous seasons of "build up" but we need more context for right now because based on context clues it seems like Michael and Alex have had no contact for this whole year, not that the show has even bothered to give us that much information. 🙄 So why is Michael hopeful now as opposed to last season when Alex was pouring out his love in a song about Michael? What changed? Who knows! Not us, that's for sure. And Alex is telling he he joined deep sky for Michael, and it's like, bitch where?! When? When he was crying while watching Forrest leave a WEEK ago after talking about exclusivity with him? When he was telling Kyle he considered not joining Deep Sky at all and leaving with Forrest but decided to stay because he needs to know more? But now suddenly it’s because he wants to build a better world for Michael to not be afraid.
It's not that Alex and Michael haven't had the build up for this reunion as characters, it's that we the audience are missing seeing steps or even being TOLD about them and are being expected to fill in the blanks, which is incredibly insulting because it comes across like Malex and their journey isn't an important story to tell because the fans just want them to be together and see them kiss and that's all that matters. Which isn't true! Their journey back to each other matter and fans want to see it. Tyler and Vlamis want to show it! It's a captivating story that deserved to be seen, not just throwing all their romance into one episode and expecting the fans to do ALL the heavy lifting on how they got her based on previous seasons. Little things that wouldn't have taken that much time could have solved so much of this issue too, which makes it even more frustrating! I've talked about this before but things like, Kyle and/or Alex brining up Michael when talking about Alex joining Deep Sky. Alex and Greg talking about Michael when Alex mentions getting out of the military and his new endeavors and talking about Jesse's death of which Michael was a part and Greg was about to take a bullet for him because of how important he knew Michael was to Alex. We got a scene with Kyle, Greg, and Michael and their single connecting thread, Alex, wasn't even mentioned?! Ridiculous. Alex looking at a picture of Michael before going into Deep Sky for the interview. Seeing literally anything from Alex's POV would have been helpful because again, we are getting Malex in a bubble where they only exist for each other when they are together, or when someone else is brining up (or throwing in their face) that they know about Malex's "secret" relationship. And it shouldn't be like that. And yeah, Alex is a "private" character, but he's just that, a character. So we can only ever know what the show tells or shows us, so if Alex isn't allowed to talk to anyone or even have a private moment where we see him thinking about Michael and their relationship, then how do we know what's going on in his head?
And you're absolutely right about their previous interactions not holding weight or carrying over and that's part of the issue as well. We're so used to things happening in a bubble or happening and then not mattering later, but as I said, it's been a year in the show since any of those events, and they aren't even being allowed to talk about them this season either! There's still been no mention of that song Alex sang, or of f*rlex or m*luca and how either of them really felt about that, or addressing those people as the reasons they weren't together before now. I'm hopeful we will get them talking more this season but given what we've seen so far and the show's absolute refusal to hold m*ria accountable for anything, I doubt we will get any real closure on what took so long for them to get together. And because the show won't address the m*ria issue, it's impossible to address the Michael issue and how he picked someone else, who wasn't even nice or kind or helpful or supportive of him, over Alex (who was being all of those things) over, and over, and over. That needs to be addressed in order to heal and move forward but that can't happen as long as m*ria has never done anything wrong ever, or if it IS addressed before the end of the season it will all fall on Michael as entirely his fault and will probably be twisted in some way to prop her up even more as the kind of woman they both want and wish they could have if only they weren't so unfortunately stuck with their cosmic connection to each other.
So yeah, Alex and Michael's story has simultaneously taken 84 unjustifiable years to get to this point, while also not giving us nearly enough present-day information after a year-long time jump to explain how they suddenly are all in and ready to be together now, as opposed to where they were at the end of season 2. By not allowing them to interact or talk to anyone else about what they have been thinking about the other for the entire year time jump and what conclusions they have come to about what and who they want and why, and if they have hope of getting that and why, it feels like their journey this season has been rushed or steps have been skipped. Because there was really no reason for them not to be together at the end of season 2 but that's what c*rina gave us and instead of working to fix that, they've just decided to pretend last season and this year long time jump, and m*ria keeping them apart just...doesn't exist for Alex and Michael. I absolutely do not believe in that "the characters need to earn being together" crap, but the writing absolutely does have to earn the payoff of them getting together. There are emotional beats that needed to be set up, and a build within this season to get to that point and have it mean something. And by benching Malex all season we didn't get the build up of seeing both of them being clowns on the same page of the book called "I want to be with him but he no longer wants to be with me", and without that tension, the big "release" doesn't feel satisfying. And I don't think it's wrong to ask for more from the show that just two pretty guys kissing. Their love story is one for the ages and deserves to be told (actually their Romeo/Juliet warring families set up makes them the most interesting and they should have been the focal point of the show all along but I digress), not just shoehorned in for ratings boosts. It's insulting, not just to the fans or to the Malex story, but also to the actors bringing the story to life who WANT to do more, who are BEGGING to do more with their characters and this story.

Their story started at 4 years old, if you think bughead/varchie is doing exes to lovers in the way u think. Think again! They literally used the barchie song from the pilot tonight! Ras literally said what Barchie share is very deep deep. They never got the chance to even date nor share their feelings. Everytime it was the wrong time!Right person, wrong time trope! They haven't talk about the rejection in 1x01, the "a little part of me always thought" in 1x13. The kiss in 2x09, the dream in 3x09 where archie visualized betty in the pink dress, the emotional dream and kiss in 4x17 and breakup affair in 4x18. Every seasons they put clues between these 2. They are the slowburn of riverdale. This is their story now and we will get to explore it in depth. If you ever seen fwb movies you know how this most likey end...it's not a short story, the emotions will take place eventually, pay attention to the actual story! Its NOT about varchie/bughead.
Lili & KJ have such a chemistry! ❤❤❤

I’m getting real tired of the show so often contradicting itself. I’m sick of the writers making statements within the show about characters when there’s no evidence to back them up. And this has happened a lot, with multiple characters, but they do it all the time with Landon. Say stuff about him that’s not even true, as if they ignore their own work and instead take stuff that Landon antis say on Twitter and put it in the script. Like in the last episode, when they had the Necromancer say that Landon always waits to be saved? That he always just relies on Hope to save him? When? Whenever he’s been in trouble, he still tries to do what he can to get out of it.
In 1x08, he called Hope for help, but didn’t necessarily expect it, because when she shows up, he says “that’s never happened to me before.” He wasn’t just waiting around, he was drugged. And when he woke up, he was tied up, but was still trying to talk to Seylah and get out of the situation, and it ended up fine. He worked to help Hope throughout 1x09 and was actually the one who figured out the monster. And he also helped get rid of the slugs in 1x11. He wasn’t waiting to be saved in 1x13, that all happened very quickly and suddenly. And when he was kidnapped by Clarke, he left clues for Hope, but he was still dealing with Clarke on his own and he was still trying to fight the headless horseman on his own, and again, figured out how to defeat it. He didn’t even remember Hope for the first several episodes of season 2, and didn’t even know or expect her to save him. 2x10, he was helping to figure out the monster the entire time and also tried to fight it and helped Wade to defeat it. 2x11, he knew nothing about prison worlds, so while he did leave that to Hope, he was trying to deal with Pothos and did save Hope from him. And he was still trying to help and support Hope in 2x13, and then Dorian and Landon both saved each other in that episode. The only time I can think of when he was waiting for Hope to save the day without being more involved was in 3x02 when he was with Raf. And I don’t even want to count that because that was one of the most poorly written episodes where literally everyone was ooc. But then in 3x04, he once again was trying to help Hope and was the one who went to the Necromancer at the school. And now he’s been stuck in Malivore, which is impossible for anyone to get out of unless Malivore allows them to get out, so of course all he can really do is hope that Hope will find a way to save him. So please tell me when (besides 3x02 and being trapped in Malivore) Landon has ever sat around waiting for Hope to save him without making any effort and doing his best to do whatever he can?
Yes, he’s always been very confident that Hope will come through and save the day because she always has and he knows how powerful she is. But that doesn’t mean he just sits and waits for her to do that. From the beginning, Landon has never expected Hope to do everything on her own. And we’ve seen that through his actions, in the way he has always tried to help her and has never wanted her to deal with everything alone. But everyone has said the opposite so many times and for so long, that now Landon himself is saying it when it’s not even true. Because if you actually watch the show, without any outside influence from the fandom, what’s been said about Landon really doesn’t make sense. I just don’t understand where this perception of him is coming from. People forget that Landon is a survivor, which has been emphasized in the show before. He had to survive on his own throughout his life, so for anyone to say that he is always needing to be saved and waits for other people to help him contradicts his entire past and what he’s been through and how he has always fought to survive.
