One Dress a Day Challenge
September: Bond Films
Goldfinger / Honor Blackman as Pussy Galore
From one previous Avengers star to another! Ms. Galore wears several attractive costumes in this film, but her first appearance, in a pantsuit of what appears to be crushed black velvet, is memorable. I tend to think her employer, Mr. Goldfinger, probably mandated the metallic gold vest and cuffs.
Do the cuffs even connect to anything? If that publicity shot shows the same vest, it's sleeveless! And it looks like there is a sliver of bare skin visible through the slit in her jacket cuff, in the shot where she's wearing the headphones.

Harum Scarum (1965)
Tumblr media
Harum Scarum could’ve been tasteless, even offensive… but it’s much too pathetic to be anything but laughable.
American singer-turned movie star Johnny Tyronne (played by singer-turned-movie-star Elvis Presley) is touring the middle East to premiere his new picture. Suddenly, he is kidnapped by a guild of assassins. After a series of escapes and recaptures, he is strongarmed into helping them take out the sheik of Bar Esalaam. If he doesn't, his new-found friends (which include 2 adorable little orphans) will be murdered!
When this film began, I thought I knew where it was going. In the movie-within-the-movie, Johnny Tyronne takes down a leopard with his bare hands. Once captured by the assassins, they ask him to use his karate-chopping abilities to kill. You think this is going to be one of those comedies where The King tries to tell everyone that he’s just a movie star, that he can’t actually crush bones to powder with a single swipe of his arm… but no, that’s not the case at all. Johnny Tyronne really IS capable of punching out wild cats single-handed. What?! From there, Johnny climbs a series of low walls meant as barriers before serenading slave girls and being seduced by beautiful ladies. That's awkward, as are all the white people in makeup we're supposed to believe are actually middle-eastern. I can give certain films a pass on the whole brown-face thing to a certain extent; white people didn’t know better at the time… but there’s nothing particularly good about this movie and therefore no reason to give it any sort of benefit of the doubt.
The film’s plot is ridiculous, but if the songs were worthwhile, you’d enjoy it as a clumsy vehicle to deliver sweet tunes to the audience. Unfortunately, none of them feel like they belong or advance the plot in any way whatsoever. While Elvis watches a 12-year-old dancer (who hopes of one day becoming a beautiful slave girl) he sings to her “All right... Hey little girl, come on and dance with me You're about the cutest thing I ever did see Hey little girl, I'd like to take you home Come on, come on, come on I want you for my very own” Woah. Talk about creepy. There’s no way those lyrics were composed for that context! That's about as graceful as Harum Scarum gets. One scene shows the lovely Princess Shalimar (Mary Ann Mobley) looking into her pond. She begins thinking about Johnny Tyronne. Why? So she can imagine him delivering another song!
Elvis looks silly in a pair of lime-green pants, prancing on cheap-looking sets that could never convince anyone that the made-up country the story is set in has been isolated from the rest of the world for 2,000 years. The man displays no dramatic chops whatsoever and his performance during the musical numbers will make you wonder how he could've possibly been a music legend. It all culminates in a twist so obvious you can’t believe the film lacks that much imagination.
I suspect Harum Scarum is an indicator of what the best-selling solo music artist of all time's movie career turned out to be. This likely means I'll be seeing a lot more of Elvis at my weekly “So Bad It's Good Movie Night”. Under that lens this isn't a classic but it's got its moments. (June 30, 2017)

warnings: slightly ooc, not proof or beta read, mentions of smoking
sucker for seeing you in his clothes. it feeds his ego, as well as some possessive tendencies he prefers not to talk about. he just likes to know that youre his and no one elses<3
youre the first person he calls when hes in jail. he wants you to know that hes alright, that it could be a few days before he sees you again. he may or may not try to coax you into paying his bail while hes at it, but he means well.
likes hearing you talk about your day. he’ll tease you for rambling, but deep down he adores the excitement in your voice and the gleam in your eyes. he cant explain why, he just does.
his love language is physical touch. its an easy way for him to show his affection—why waste time forming some sappy speech when he can just hold your waist or slip a hand into your back pocket?
rests his hand on your thigh while hes driving. he gets road-rage like no other, and nothing soothes him more than the feeling of your soft skin under his fingertips.
doesnt see any importance in schoolwork. if you agree to skip classes with him—which he’ll practically beg you to do—hes more than happy to take you anywhere you wanna go.
sweet when he wants or has to be. tenderness isnt his forte, but he’ll make an attempt for you.
insists on sharing cigarettes with you. he claims its easier to pass one around than waste two (in reality, he just enjoys the sight of you as he holds it up to your lips, patiently waiting for you to take a drag.)

One Dress a Day Challenge
September: Bond Films
Thunderball / Luciana Paluzzi as Fiona Volpe
Fiona is known as the first femme fatale of the franchise, and turquoise is her signature color, which she wears on several occasions. This dress reads as solid blue from a distance, but when examined closer, it has a faint floral-esque pattern and some subtle sparkle. Her jewelry is also pretty luxurious (love the hair comb), but of course, it's that blue boa that's the real statement piece.
