the thing is, akutagawa meeting dazai in that forest is possibly the worst thing that's ever happened to him, but akutagawa himself sees it as the best thing that's ever happened to him, and the juxtaposition between that never fails to make me insane

Idk if 'best' is the most accurate term but he does see it as a life-changing moment, and "giving him a reason to live" at the very least has a positive connotation. And yet this ended up causing him so much more misery and pain than he was already in to begin with. Basically it didn't cause his problems but it did amplify them. But he doesn't see it that way and it makes me wanna 🕳🏃‍♀️

Hey! Honestly most of it is sourced in amusement. Even before I started romancing him (which I did on my 4th playthrough) I just found him funny. You get off the train and meet your boss who is totally not embezzling town funds, and then immediately meet this fucking guy. Jumps off a wholeass building to get up in your face. Like, what's ur problem, dude.

When I bought the game, I wasn't aware of who was romanceable, so when I saw him I knew that I would immediately give his romance a good shake if he was an option. Like, I understand why people didn't like Pen even before the Knives Out update, but people being so confused about why someone would like Pen really need to chill. For some of us, it's not that deep. He's just a guy. Just a silly little guy.

But I was also surprised he was an option at all because, what, pray tell, could Pathea's plans be for such a weird character. It felt like a weird risk, so part of romancing him was sourced in wondering where it would go.

As I played his romance, I felt like there was a good setup for some interesting character development. One of the devs mentioned that the source of inspiration for him was Gaston, which I believe is why a lot of what we see is completely unredeemable. It's also why much of his characterization went off the deep end after Knives Out. Gaston was the villain of BATB, so of course with Pen's characterization being based off of him, he's going to lean into being the bad guy.

But it also bears mentioning that I like Gaston too. The guy is completely unredeemable. I would never defend him within an inch of my life. But I also find him funny in the same way I find Pen funny. There's just something about utterly oblivious, self absorbed characters that tickles me. wat can i say?

I also think that, as a writer, I just love the idea of fucking with characters like Pen and Gaston. Pen specifically is far more oblivious than Gaston and is willing to put himself in uncomfortable situations to make a point (i.e. not wearing a mask during a sandstorm, and the Lucien Crepe Incident). That is literally a story that writes itself. He's also incredibly lacking in decorum or self awareness, so making mistakes would take having them shoved in his face (preferably by most of the community).
