Grammar You Can Use Instead of -지만 and -는데

-기는 하지만, -기는 -지만

Usage: A/V + 기는 하지만 is used by speakers to express different views on something.

Even though it’s translated as “but”, there is a bit more to it than just that. In the first part of the sentence the speaker recognizes or acknowledges something, but in the second sentence expresses a different opinion.

A/V Present Tense - 기는 하지만

A/V Past Tense - 기는 했지만

A/V Future Tense - 기는 하겠지만

Noun Present Tense - (이)기는 하지만

Often used in its contracted form in conversation 기는 하지만 > 긴 하지만. The other form of this grammar -기는 -지만 uses the same adjective/verb twice in a row and can add more emphasis.

Examples:

그 신발이 좋기는 좋지만 너무 비싸서 못 사요.

Those shoes ARE good, but I can’t buy them because they are too expensive.

어제 축구를 하기는 했지만 오래 하지 읺았어요.

I played soccer yesterday, but I didn't play it for long.

파티를 오긴 하겠지만 늦게 도착할 수도 있어요.

I'll come to the party, but I might arrive late.

지만 vs 가는 하지만

지만 - subjects can be different in each sentence

기는 하지만 - subjects of both sentences must be the same

지만 - used to make a simple contrast

기는 하지만 - used when emphasizing a contrast. the speaker states something that they acknowledge or know is try and then emphasize a contrasting fact or situation

(으)ㄴ/는데도

Usage: This is mostly translated as “Even though, although, or despite”. It’s used to indicate that something that is opposite or unexpected occurs when compared to the information that is stated in the first sentence.

A/V Past Tense -았/었는데도

Adjectives Present Tense - (consonant) 은데도 (vowel)ㄴ데도

Verbs Present Tense - 는데도

Nouns이다

Present Tense 인데도

Past Tense (vowel)였는데도

Examples:

밖에 눈이 많이 오는데도 거리에 사람들이 많아요.

It's snowing a lot outside, but there are a lot of people on the street.

어제 잘 잤는데도 오늘 많이 피곤하네요

Despite sleeping well last night, I’m really tired today.

휴일인데도 도서관에서 공부를 해요.

Even though it’s a holiday, I study at the library.

(으)ㄴ/는 반면에

Usage: Translated as “but, while”. It also can be thought of as “on the other hand”.

This grammar is used to express the fact that 2 things are opposite. Used to state both positive and negative things. The alternative form is A/V-(으)ㄴ/는 데 반해 = but, while.

It’s cold in the morning, but it’s hot in the afternoon.

어깨 디테일이 예쁜 원피스지만 충동ㄱ 매보다는 건너편 카페에 앉아서 살까 ㅏㄹ까 충동일까 합리적일까 그런 쓸데없는 고민 예나지금이나 잘 함.

여기서 나만친한건지 뭔지 나만좋아하는건지 모르겠지만 내가 좋아하는 언니집가서 마라샹궈 해먹음. 근데 언니 남친 있어서 밥이 코로들어가는지 입으로 들어가는지 그냥 영어면접 보는 느낌이였음 그래도 남친과 영어 발음이 달라서 정말 영어공ㅂ 가 되는 느낌 아 내 남친도 물론 외국인인데 점점 한국어를 함 ;; 한국 사람이 어떻게 생긴지도 모르는 애 였는데 어디서부터 잘못된건지 후

저번주는 스트레스가 많았? 지만 운동을 시작하니까 세상이 아름다워보이는건지 뭔지 하트 구름과 무지개 넘 이쀼

첫 번째 용의자 산토스와 대화를 마친 후, 이번엔 보겔. 어떡하고 있으려나 내심 궁금했는데, 그는 유치장 안에서도 평소와 전혀 다르지 않다. (쳇, 김 빠지게…)

​셜록의 걱정 어린 안부를 여유롭게 받아넘기는 가운데, 은근슬쩍 자신의 형을 언급하는 보겔. 2회차 와서 다시 보니 말에 뼈가 숨어 있었군. 그러나 셜록이 이를 알아 챌 리는 만무하다.

아무것도 모르는 셜록은 보겔의 말을 아무렇지 않게 흘려 버리고, 이번 사건으로 화제를 넘긴다. 경찰에 내가 아는 건 다 전했지만, 당신의 무죄를 밝히려면 증거가 필요하다는 셜록. 보겔은 빈정거리다, 셜록이 경찰과 한 거래에 대해 듣더니 불쑥 질문을 던진다. 혹시 진실을 입증할 증거를 찾지 못하더라도, 날 위해 거짓말을 해 줄 수 있냐며.

​뭐야, 삐딱하게 굴 땐 언제고. 괘씸해서 안 들어 주련다.

셜록이 거부하자, 하얀 거짓말이 처음도 아니면서 왜 나한테만 그러냐는 보겔. 왜 그러냐니, 가슴에 손을 얹고 생각해 보세요. 댁이 셜록 같으면 양심까지 속여 가며 도와 주고 싶겠나.

하지만 셜록은 타협 없이 해결할 수 있다고 좋게 좋게 보겔을 달랜다. 그러려면 우선,

조사에 협조부터 잘 하십시다, 보겔 씨.

수첩을 열어 보겔의 입을 열어 줄 증거를 찾아 본다. 이 남자, 시작부터 중요한 단서를 숨겼으렷다. 그러나, 셜록은 그 일을 보겔에게 따질 생각이 별로 없는 것 같다. 보겔에게 집사장 산토스가 밀고자였음을 전하고 나자 대화는 그걸로 끝. 한편, 보겔은 산토스를 잘 몰랐던 듯 셜록의 말에 대수롭지 않게 반응한다. 하긴, 보겔이 만치오스와 산토스의 진짜 관계를 알 수는 없었을 테니까. 모르는 이상, 그에게는 '시중 드는 하인 1' 정도의 존재감이었겠지.

​두 번째 용의자(지만 셜록은 결백하다고 믿는) 보겔의 취조를 마치고, 다음은 만치오스를 ���나 보자.

셜록이 오스왈드 경관의 수사 파트너로 자신을 소개하자, 만치오스는 그를 경찰 중 하나로 여겼는지 빨리 처리하라며 짜증을 낸다. 목소리 듣고 금방 알아볼 줄 알았는데, 좀 당황스럽네. 듣기 좋다며 칭찬하더니, 빈말이었나?

셜록의 대답에 드디어 첫 만남을 기억해 낸 만치오스. 하지만 그를 여전히 경찰로 착각해 실망하는 눈치다. 아무래도 보겔이 설명을 제대로 안 했나 보군. 이에, 셜록은 고문 탐정이라며 친절히 오해를 풀어 준다.

그러면서 살포시 새로운 오해를… 셰리야, 그거 희망 사항?

셜록의 해명을 듣고, 만치오스는 신랄하다며 흡족해 한다. 곤경에서 벗어나게 해 달라는 만치오스의 말에, 살인범을 찾는 것이 유일한 방법이라 답하는 셜록. 즉, 보겔 때와 마찬가지로 만치오스에게도 "그러니까 조사에 잘 협조해 달라"는 뜻이겠지.

본격적인 취조 전, 우선 인물 관찰로 그의 몸이 말하는 단서부터 찾도록 하자.

립스틱 발린 입술, 머리를 자주 염색한 듯한 흔적. 만치오스는 자신이 늙어 간다는 사실을 인정하기 싫은 모양이다. 누가 돈 많은 귀족 아니랄까 봐 신고 있는 구두에도 번쩍번쩍 광이 난다. 그 돈으로 조카 봉급이나 챙겨 줄 것이지.

​음? 그런데 손톱 밑의 저 비누 조각은… 얼마나 허둥지둥 손을 씻었으면, 손에 비누 조각이 남은 것도 모르셨을까. 공교롭게도, 아까 분장실에 누군가 손을 씻은 흔적이 있었다. 물론 그저 청결에 집착해서일 가능성도 없지 않지만, 여기서는 의심의 불씨를 살려 다른 결론을 선택하는 편이 좋겠다.

셜록은 만치오스가 얼굴에 화장을 했다는 사실을 꺼내며, 나이를 인정하는 게 그렇게 힘드냐 묻는다. 만치오스는 젊은 사람들과 어울리려면 어쩔 수 없다고, 그 말에 푸념하듯 대꾸한다. 그냥 포기하면 될 일을.

​한편, 문제의 손톱 밑 비누에 대해서는 뭘 그런 걸로 트집을 잡냐는 반응이다. 손을 어디서 씻었는지 잊어버렸나, 아니면 시침을 떼는 건가.

​이제 사건 피해자 얘기로 넘어가 보자.

생각보다 그는 파비오에게 진심이었던 것 같다. 말하는 걸 보면 거의 파비오 팬클럽 초대 회장님 수준. 앞서 들었던 얘기대로, 파비오는 파티의 인기인이었던 듯하다. 만치오스는 그가 다른 손님에게도 서비스를 제공하고 돈을 받았을 거라 한다.

​다음 질문은 파티에 대해서.

파티에 초대 받는 손님은 나이가 있으며 오랫동안 조국에 헌신한 사람들이다. 아마 그와 비슷한 연배의 영국 정치인, 아니면 귀족이겠지. 그런 자리에 보겔을 초대한 이유는 일단 그가 예쁘장하게 생긴 데다(뮁?) 사람을 놀라게 하는 말재주가 있어서. 즉, 파티 분위기를 띄워 줄 광대로 여겼다는 말이다. 보겔도 만치오스의 의중을 알았는지, 무슨 생각으로 초대에 응했을지 궁금하군. 뭐, 그 남자 성격을 생각하면 그저 "재밌을 것 같아서"가 이유겠지만.

마지막으로, 수첩을 꺼내 정말 궁금했던 것들을 하나씩 추궁해 본다. 그가 산토스 핀체티에게 보낸 쪽지와 유언장.

셜록이 유언장의 내용에 대해 그의 냉혹함을 비판하자, 만치오스는 역시나 대놓고 불쾌해 한다. 거머리라니. 그렇게 못마땅해 하면서 집사장 일은 왜 맡겼을까. 분수를 가르친다고? 그러니까 친조카한테 밀고 같은 거나 당하죠, 영감님.

보다 못해 그에게 산토스의 경찰 신고 사실을 말해 준다. 그 말에 은혜도 모르는 짐승이라며 길길이 뛰는 만치오스.

글쎄요, 현 시점에서 제일 의심스러운 용의자는 바로 당신입니다만. 분장실에 있던 커프스 단추에 대해 말해 주실까요?

순수한 비즈니스였을 뿐이라고 주장하던 만치오스는 셜록이 계속 추궁하자, 파비오가 자신의 제자이면서 빛과 같은 존재였음을 밝힌다. 이건 아무래도 단순한 팬심 이상의 감정 같은데. 과연 파비오는 어떻게 생각했으려나.

이렇게 해서 세 번째 용의자와의 인터뷰도 종료. 끝으로 마티스타를 만나 이야기를 들어 봐야겠다.

더즐리 부부는 포터 부부가 갑자기 이 근처에 나타나면 이웃 사람들이 뭐라고 떠들어댈지 생각만 해도 몸서리가 쳐졌다. 더즐리 부부는 포터 부부에게도 아들이 하나 있다는 것은 알고 있었지만, 본적도 없었다. 이 아이는 더즐리 부부가 포터 부부를 멀리하는 또 다른 이유이기도 했다. 그들은 두들리가 그런 아이와 어울리지 않길 바랐다.

The Dursleys shuddered at the thought of what the neighbors would say if Potter and his wife suddenly appeared around here. The Dursleys knew that  Potter also had a son, but they had never seen him. The child was another reason why the Dursleys stayed away from the Potters. They didn't want Dooley to hang out with such a child.

마음을 동내고 채우고, 다시 의심하고, 그렇게 무엇이든 의문을 가졌던 일.

이 시간 속에서 무엇이든 붙잡고 늘어지고 차가웠던 겨울바람이 뜨거워질 때까지 나를 감정속에 던져놓은 일.

꿈같은 시간이 순식간에 지나가도록 손놓고 목놓아 부른 일.

고민했던 것들을 여전히 고민하지만 그런 것들을 두려워하지 않았던 일.

그냥 나로 계속 남아있는 일.

마음을 다 소진시키지 않은 일.

포기하지 않고 계속 어떤 것들을 붙잡으려 한 일.

놓아야 할 것을 도망치듯 떠나온 일.

그런 것들, 그런 변함없는 나.

1. 이른 아침 아무도 없는 방콕 집 앞 골목길에서 서성였던 일, 커다란 나무 한 그루가 천장 위로 뻗어 나가는 카페에서 앞으로의 방향을 결정했던 일, 반신반의했지만 내 마음을 더 중요하게 생각하고 마음이 가는대로 이야기하고 행동했던 일, 한국에 돌아가기로 결정한 일, 코창을 목적지로 정했던 일, 오래되지 않은 친구지만 웬지 모르게 오래 알던 것처럼 편안함과 듬직함을 느껴 그 친구의 집에 두 손 가득 빵을 들고 찾아간 일, 그리고 무엇보다 생전 별로 사용하지 않을 것만 같았던 초록 하트에게 의미를 부여한 일.

2. 사실 너도 그렇지만 나도 걱정이 많고, 때론 두렵기도 해. 그래도 잘 해낼 거고 잘 할 거야. 지금껏 그래왔듯이.

여전히 폰지 사기에 놀아나고 있는 부모님. 직장을 잃은 형. 우리 부부 사이에 점점 높게 쌓여가는 벽. 직장의 일만으로도 쉽게 무너졌다 일어서기를 반복하는 와중에 가까운 주변의 어려움이 파도처럼 나를 향해 밀려온다. 그러니 절망은 곱절이 되어 내 밑에서 아가리를 벌린다. 나는 할 만큼을 다 했다. 그래서 사는 일이 녹록지 않음을 다시금 느낀다.

아등바등 버텨내는 동안 유야무야 흘러간 6개월 안에서 잘 했던 일을 떠올리려니 생각이 멎어버린다. 늦봄에 케밥을 먹으러 이태원에 다녀온 일 정도가 잘 한 일이라고 할 수 있을까. 신혼여행으로 다녀왔던 튀르키예를 추억하며 데이트를 하는 동안 많이 웃었던 기억이 난다. 아주 드물게도 우리 부부가 싸우지 않고 넘어간 주말이라 유난히 즐거웠다고 느껴진다.

보통은 시간이 너무 빠르게 간다고 느끼는데, 올해는 매달 이벤트가 있어서 그런지 적당한 속도로 가고있다는 느낌이 든다.

7월로 달력을 넘기고 넋을 놓고 바라본다. 미리 적어두었던 계획들을 살피고, 새로운 계획을 추가한다.

2023년 상반기에 잘한 일 이라고 한다면, 내 삶에 변화를 주려고 노력했다는 것이다.

나는 내 삶이 굉장히 평화롭다고 생각했는데, 바꿔서 말하면 아무것도 안하고 있는 것이었다. 그걸 깨닫게 된건 친구가 내가 있는 곳으로 여행을 오면서 였다. 5일동안 우리집에서 함께 지냈는데, 여간 불편한게 아니었다. 하지만 '불편해서 싫어'가 아니라, '내가 정말 생각 없이 살았구나'를 느꼈다. 아무것도 안해도 되서 누워있는게 평화로운게 아니라 게으른 거라는걸 느끼고 변화를 줘야겠다고 다짐하고 좀 더 활동적으로 하루를 보내기 위해 노력했다.

혼자서 여행을 자주 갔다. 나는 혼자 여행하는 게 잘 맞다. 계획형의 성향은 아니라 그때그때 상황에 봐서 하는 여행이 잘 맞고, 취향이 확고해서 일단 누군가와 여행해야 한다면 배려가 깔려야 하는 게 부담스럽다. 여동생과 방콕 여행을 했는데 내가 제일 좋아하는 방콕을 여동생에게 보여줄 수 있어서 좋았다. 하지만 너무 더워서 남남으로 집에 갈뻔했다.

또, 요가를 다시 시작했다. 1시간은 힘든 플로우로 수업을 하고, 1시간은 천천히 하는 플로우를 하고 명상한다. 싱잉볼을 해주는 선생님이 있는데 그때 많은 메세지가 들린다.

마지막은 새로운 인연을 피하지 않고, 받아들이고 내 이야기를 한 것이다. 나는 내 직관을 믿는 편인데, 내가 느끼기에 위험하지 않고 좋은 사람이라고 느껴지면 마음을 열게 되었다. 행복한 게 좋지만 불안하니까, '행복할 필요 없어 불행하지 않은 게 더 중요해' 이런 마음으로 다가오는 인연을 피했었다. 앞으로도 나의 직관을 믿고, 다가오는 모든 가능성과 기회, 그리고 인연을 받아들이고 싶다.

남은 2023년이 너무 기대 된다. 나에게 다가오는 모든 것들을 받아들이자.
