Big Scary Love

Summary: A little brother seeks approval as he’s about to make the biggest decision of his life.

A/N: I was supposed to have written and submitted this one-shot for @a-mess-of-fandoms​​ months ago, but I suck! I have struggled with this thing so much. I have literally rewritten it 19 times. I don’t know why one-shots are so hard for me. The only have to be one scene, but I struggle with did I choose the right scene, how much do I want to say about it, did I find resolution? Needless to say, I was never happy with anything I wrote. It still didn’t turn out exactly as I hoped, but it’s close.

Congrats on your many followers! I’m sorry I’m so late.

Big Scary Love

Lothbrok’s Bar and Grille sat approximately two miles south off of exit 131B  between Kattegat and Hedeby. 

Established in 1990, the bar was built from the ground up by the Sigurdsson brothers, Ragnar and Rollo, as a place where the blue-collar people of both towns could get a good meal and stiff drink. It was also the place where Ragnar’s sons had grown up and naturally where they chose to carry on the childhood tradition of their monthly family game night. 

Dating back to when Bjorn first taught Ubbe and Hvitserk how to play Go Fish, when they were the ages of 6 and 4. respectively, the boys would meet at a table in the back of the restaurant to play games. It helped keep them close, especially since Bjorn lived in Hedeby with Lagertha and the other boys lived in Kattegat with Aslaug. But, the bar was in the middle, on neutral territory. It provided a place where they could all gather and remain close when distance and the common dislike between the adults threatened to tear them apart.  

Almost thirty years later the tradition continues at 7:30 pm on the third Thursday of the month. Bjorn and his wife Gunnhild, Ubbe along with his wife Torvi, Hvitserk and his girlfriend Amma, Sigurd with his boyfriend Kalf, and Ivar who vowed to start bringing his girlfriend, Cami, would gather, at the table in the back left corner, to play the game of choice according to whose name was next on the chalkboard. 

Watching the door, Ivar’s brows raise when he recognizes his older brother cross the threshold. Slowly, he continues to organize the colorful money so that all the faces aligned in the same direction and before placing it back in the bank. A quick nod acknowledges the fact that Ubbe is headed to the bar to get a drink before he takes a seat at the large table in the back corner of the room, already set for the brothers’ monthly game. Tonight’s game is his pick, Monopoly.

Ubbe shivers slightly, trying to knock off the outside chill as he brushes the fresh snow from his black wool pea coat. As he approaches the bar, he removes his gloves and smiles at his younger brother. “Hvitserk,” he sings, clasping the younger Ragnarsson’s hand before drawing him into a manly hug, “How’s it going, brother?”

“Pretty good,” Hvitserk answers patting his brother on the back with a smile, “What are you doing here so early? We’re not supposed to meet for another,” he looks up at the clock built into the ship’s wheel on the far wall, “hour.”

“Ah,” Ubbe puts one his foot on the wooden rungs of the bar stool and balances his weight on his other leg while he plays with the coaster, “Ivar asked me to meet him here early.” He looks over his right shoulder toward the table in the back and holds up a finger to his youngest brother and then points to the bar to ask if he would like a drink. “Do you know what’s up with him?”

“He probably wants you to help him cheat,” Hvitserk explains as he takes the towel from over his shoulder and wipes down the side of the bar to Ubbe’s left. “The usual?” He prepares two drinks, when Ubbe holds up two fingers, for both of his brothers. “Oh, Angrboda just made a huge pot of Helga’s seafood stew.”

Ubbe’s eyes light up as he nods his head, “That sounds great. I’m fucking freezing. Send over a large bowl with bread, yeah?” He knocks on the bar twice, as is customary, before picking up the glasses and makes his way to the table.   

Ubbe sits the drinks on the table and smiles cheerfully, “Hey, baby boy.” He walks around and hugs his brother’s head before leaning down to kiss him on the top of his hair, “How you doing, kid? You good?” Receiving a pat on his forearm, he playfully pushes Ivar away before flopping down on a chair beside him.

“Hey,” Ivar answers watching his brother sit, holding an awkward smile on his lips, “thanks for meeting me early.” He takes a look out the window at the falling snow covering up his uneven footprints on the sidewalk, “It’s getting bad out there?”

“Nah, not really. Should have a good covering come morning, but nothing too bad.” Ubbe picks up his glass and takes a drink, stretching his lips across his teeth as the sour taste of the vodka gimlet settles on his tongue. He takes note of the way his brother is arranging the game pieces and watches for a moment before he speaks, “So…what’s going on? Why did I need to meet you here before the others?”

Ivar takes a sip of the Guinness Stout and picks up the Chance cards to arrange them all in the same direction, “Well, uh, Ubbe. I wanted to talk to you, about…about, Camille.”

“What about her?” Ubbe isn’t sure where this conversation is headed. He’s only met her a handful of times and she seems nice enough, though he’s not sure she’s the one for Ivar. There’s no reason for him to feel that way, it’s just something in his gut that says the relationship will be short-lived. 

“So,” Ivar takes in a deep breath. Having rehearsed his speech for the better part of the day, he struggles to remember to pace himself and breathe, “You know we’ve been together for a little over a year now and things are going in a really good direction with us. She’s moving in with me. We’ve even talked about looking for a small house together.” He looks up from the game box to gauge his brother’s reaction. Unable to read Ubbe’s face he continues, “I want to ask her to marry me.”

Ubbe coughs down the gimlet that gets caught in his throat as he swallows. He sits back in the chair and leans against the backrest folding his arms across his chest. He tries to keep his mouth closed to let his brother finish but the words start to spill out his mouth, “Oh, Ivar,” he chuckles, “I don’t think that’s such a good idea.” 

“Why because she’s Afro-Latina and not Viking? I thought you of all people would understand that our differences don’t matter to me. Hell, I’m different, and it didn’t stop her from wanting to be with me,” Ivar defends.

“Of course not, brother. I’m not a dick,” Ubbe places his hand on his brother’s arm to calm him, “I only meant that she’s your first girlfriend. I get that you’re excited, and everything is still pretty new with you two. But, you don’t have to run out and propose to the first girl that you -” he raises his brows and ducks his head to signal Ivar what he’s talking about. “You will have lots of relationships. You will meet a ton of beautiful women that will blow your mind in bed. Hell, you might even want to marry them all. We all know Bjorn tries to,” both brothers chuckle at that, “but it’s not necessary.”

“You don’t understand, Ubbe.” Ivar interrupts, “it’s not like that.”

“You don’t understand, kid. Bjorn will never release your shares from this place before you’re 30. Especially not if he knew you would be just turning it over to some girl and knowing you it would be without a prenup. Without the interest on that trust, what will you do for money, huh? Work for Hvitserk?” He raises his brow at Ivar while ignoring the flash of anger in the younger man’s eye. “Rollo and Father put every dime and ounce of sweat they had into this restaurant to give us a legacy. You are too young to remember, but there were nights when Father would not come home because he was here laying the foundation, brick by brick. There were also many times when Mother had nothing but soup to feed us all because there was no money to buy meat; father spent it all to see his dream come true. His dream was for us to have a better life and we did. When he died, we all got a piece of this place and the money from it is for our future.”

Ubbe blinks his blue eyes thoughtfully at the younger man beside him, “Besides, baby boy, you are so impulsive – as soon as you get an idea, you jump on it. You don’t always think things through. Have you really thought about this?”

“When Bjorn decided to join the Army and go to war, we didn’t tell him he couldn’t go. We let him go live out his dreams of being one of the Avengers. And was Hvitserk being impulsive when he decided that he wanted to take this place over after Helga died? He did not know the restaurant business. Liking to eat and running a restaurant are two different things, but none of us tried to talk him out of it?” Ivar rolled his eyes and slammed the game cards onto the board, “We all rallied around him and pooled our money together to help him remodel this place how he wanted. We promised that even if he fucked up we would pitch in and help keep this place afloat. My money is here, too. I should be able to have it if I want it.”

“But, Ivar…”

“I’m not finished, Ubbe,” Ivar runs his fingers through his long, loose hair and pulls it over to one shoulder, “When you decided to marry Torvi, a woman that had three children that weren’t yours, did any of us say anything? No. We could see that you loved her and that she made you happy and that was enough. And Sigurd? He was scared as hell to tell us about Kalf, but in the end, it was fine, because he’s our brother and we support each other. But why not me?”

Ubbe takes another drink and sets his cup down silently. He regards his little brother and smiles at him softly, “Because you, my little Ivar, are my baby brother and I don’t want you to get hurt.” He squeezes Ivar’s shoulder lovingly, “I have always looked out for you. I have been your legs since you were a child. You are a part of me, brother, and I must protect you.”

“You can’t protect me from love, Ubbe. She’s my big scary love,” Ivar’s eyes drop bashfully as the blush stains his cheeks.

 “Your what?”

“That’s what we call it – big scary love. You know that love you feel all the time, but sometimes you wake up in the morning and you just say to yourself, ‘I love the fuck out of this woman?’ It’s that love that after a year I still feel fluttering in my chest when I hear her ringtone and why my world spirals out of control when I see tears in her eyes. And she loves me that way, too, Ubbe. I mean, look at me,” he opens his hands in surrender, “In my opinion, the best thing you can do is find someone who loves you for exactly what you are. Good mood, bad mood, ugly, pretty, handsome, what have you. Well, she does. She loves me like that and so much more. My legs, crawling around, breaking bones, the pain, my temper...hell, she loves me despite those things. To her, they are just additional sides of me to love.”

Ubbe listens to his brother, trying to keep the tears that threaten to spring to his eyes at bay. He can hear it in Ivar’s voice that he is truly happy. Now, he regrets not getting to know Cami better, but he admits to himself that he did not think that their relationship would last. “I am happy that you found love, Ivar.”

 “She’s pregnant.”

Ubbe unintentionally holds his breath as he tries to think of something else to say, but no words will come out. Why can’t Ivar see what he’s doing? This is all the more reason for him not to make this mistake.

“That’s not the reason why I want to marry her, though.” Ivar smile doubles in size as he thinks about the prospect of becoming a father, “I’ll admit the idea of having a baby is like…fuck! But, I want to marry her because I want to make her my family. I want it all, Ubbe; a family of my own, with her. She’s it for me.”

 “So, what do you want from me?”

With a shrug, Ivar relaxes, “Your permission? Your blessing? Congratulations? I don’t know. You’ve always been my favorite brother – I guess I just want to know that I’ll still have you in my corner. I don’t give a fuck about the money from the restaurant. If Bjorn wants to be an ass and tie it up for years, so be it. I’ll get a real job and stop living off of the family name. The only thing I want is Mother’s ring. I want to propose the right way…and maybe you in my corner.”

Ubbe cups one hand around Ivar’s cheek and gives him a few hits, “My baby brother has finally grown up!” Leaning in, he places his other hand on Ivar’s other cheek before pulling his face toward him to kiss him on both cheeks, “You’re going to be a father and husband! I’m so proud and happy for you! Of course, I will stand up for you, brother. All I have ever wanted was for you to find your own happiness.” Ubbe can’t stop the laughter coming from him as he notices Hvitserk coming over to the table. “And it would be my honor to give you Mother’s ring.”

“Sorry, it took so long. Porunn was late for her shift again. Know any good people needing a job? I could use some help around here.” Hvitserk says, sitting the bowl of soup on the table. He looks at his brothers and smiles at them laughing like loons, “What are you idiots up to?”

Ubbe gives Ivar a knowing smile as he hugs him around the shoulders. “Nothing. Just our brother here has some wonderful news to share tonight when the others arrive.”

Nodding, Hvitserk punches Ivar’s arm and picks up Ubbe’s glass to toast, “Well, to whatever your news is, Ivar,” he clicks glasses with his youngest brother and finishes off Ubbe’s drink. “I’ll get you another, Ubbe.” As he turns to walk toward the bar, he yells over his shoulder, “And you’re not banker during Monopoly tonight, Ivar. You always cheat!”

Black Coffee

Summary: Coffee aroma surrounds you as you prepare for a long day of studying in your favorite coffee shop. Your focus is shattered by a handsome stranger demanding a very large favor-pretend to be his girlfriend.  Pairing: Bucky x Female Reader Warning(s): Cursing. Innocent fluff. Bucky’s eyelashes. My prompt was “I was trying to get my morning coffee, not get kidnapped by some strange man.” Prompt is bolded. Age wise, reader is a grad student or older. No cradle robbing, Bucky. You’ve been at Quay 4, your favorite coffee shop, for about a half hour now. It’s taken you this long to set up your study space exactly how you need. You managed to snag a booth located near the giant windows; lending you a gorgeous view of the Brooklyn Bridge and the East River. Your laptop is plugged into the socket, your textbook lays open, highlighters and colored pens organized in rainbow order, and your notebook open to a fresh page. Set off to the side is a large coffee alongside an equally large cinnamon roll. You were ready for the long haul. This exam was still nearly a week away but you wanted to be prepared. Nothing but focus in your future.

You scowl at the window adjacent to your booth. A man was peering inside, effectively shattering your already shaky focus. What did this guy want? His face disappears from the window and you look back the blank page ready to begin.

The bell on the shop door dings. It’s staring man. He’s attempting to catch his breath while searching around frantically. Curious as you may be, it’s study time. You pick up your favorite pen when you feel the stare. Scratch that. You feel the presence. Someone is standing at the edge of your table; anxiously shifting their weight from one foot to another.

“I need your help.” You look up to see the same man who was creeping in the window. You lower your pen ready to chew him out and he takes it as permission to sit down. Not just down. In your half of the booth, annoyingly close to you. “Follow my lead and I’ll make it up to you.”

The door to the shop dings once more and the strange man’s arm shoots into the air to beckon the two men over to the booth. Your booth.

“So this is the girlfriend, Buck.”

“This is her!” He throws his arm around you.

Your brows raise on their own volition. Your face must be too shocked for Mr. Stranger’s desire cause he nudges your foot gently under the table before continuing.

“Sorry hun. I know I forgot to mention Sam and Steve were coming when you asked to get coffee. Didn’t mean to surprise you.”

“No I’m sorry. I wouldn’t have crowded the table with all my study materials if I knew we’d have company…” You pause unsure. “Babe?”

It didn’t suit him as a pet name. You made a mental note to choose a different one next time. What was his name again? Buck? Not sure if that’s a full name or a nickname. I guess you could work with it. Bucky suggests Sam and Steve get coffee, adding his own black coffee to their order so he can help you pack up. You groan internally having got it perfectly arranged only a short while ago.

“Details. My name is James but I go by Bucky. My favorite color is red. We started dating a month ago. We’re taking things slow ‘cause I have a fear of rejection. We met….we met…crap.”

“Here at the coffee shop?” You offer. You genuinely surprise yourself. You feel compelled to help Mr. Stranger. No. Not a stranger. Bucky. “For someone with a fear of rejection, selecting a random stranger to fake date seems a bit bold.”

He’s stunned but chuckles lightly. You tell him your name, nickname, and corresponding details. “I bought you a cinnamon roll and had it sent to your table asking you to chat.”

“You’re good at this. Fake date often?”

At this point, Sam and Steve have gathered their drinks from the counter and are headed back to the booth. You lean over and whisper in Buckys ear “it pays the bills”.

He’s laughing in earnest when the pair sit down. They slide a bowl sized mug of black coffee over to Bucky. “

“Where’s the sugar?”

“You said a black coffee.”

Steve brings his fingers to his face and pinches the bridge of his nose. He’s clearly heard the ensuing argument one too many times before.

“Tin man, if you want sugar it’s not a black coffee.”

“Yes it is! Sugar doesn’t change the color.”

“Just order a coffee with no cream add sugar.”

“They don’t add enough!”

Steve delicately spoons the whipped cream off his own mug and eats it while checking the weather on his phone. His disinterest in the argument at hand is comical. He ignores his friends not unlike a stoned faced parent. You’re still reeling at how passionate your “boyfriend” was about black coffee.

“Fine I’ll go get the sugar.” Bucky huffs. Sam coughs lightly, something sounding oddly like diabetes, and pulls his hand from his jacket pocket dropping what must be 30 packets of sugar onto the table.

“If you had the packets already why-”

“Enough you two. We came here to meet Buck’s girlfriend not force her to listen to us bicker.”

Your hand rests on the table, toying with the edge of a napkin. Bucky scoots his hand over from his side of the table to rest gently atop yours; fingers gently intertwining.

You look over to him but the words die in your throat the second you meet his eyes. You hadn’t had a chance to get a good look at him since this whole ordeal began.

He was handsome, ruggedly so. He has full cheeks and even fuller lips. His eyelashes are annoyingly long; the kind women curse men for. He’s wearing a plain white t shirt with a light bomber jacket thrown on top to combat the light breeze today. His shoulder length hair fell in shiny waves. You were close enough to feel comforted by the wafts of his body wash. He was expressive with his eyebrows. Wait. No. He was raising them in a slightly panicked inquisitive expression.

“Doll? Sam asked you a question.”

“God you two are gross already. Already drowning in each others eyes.”

A staccato beeping interrupts your assessment of Bucky and returns functional ability to your brain. Steve’s brows knit together as he reads a message off his phone.

“Nat needs us to help set up for that thing tonight, Sam.”

“Damn. I hoped we were off the hook.”

“It would appear not.” Steve’s standing, throwing on his jacket. “Sorry we didn’t get to chat more hun. We’ve been dying to meet you.”

“More like didn’t believe you exist-” Sam huffs as he’s met with a sharp elbow to his ribs. He feigns hurt before his expression changes to one of mischief. “Barnes, why don’t you bring your girl tonight?”

“No!” Bucky shouts abruptly. “I mean, she has an exam to study for. School comes first and all.”

Sam snatches a piece of paper off your stack of study materials. “Schedule says the exam is in four days. You think you can take the night off for some fun?”

You stutter responses with three pairs of eyes staring you down before gaining composure. “Studies have shown study breaks improve information retention… ”

Steve smiles genuinely while Sam raises a smug brow at Bucky. “Great it’s settled. See you tonight, guys.”

Once the two men are out of sight, Bucky collapses back into the booth next to you, jostling his coffee dangerously. His head is cradled in his hands as he mutters to himself.  You sip your own beverage waiting for an explanation but none comes.

“Darling?” you say in mock voice to get his attention. He startles as if you had teleported into the booth.

“You have to come tonight. If you don’t, Sam will never let me hear the end of it.”

“Hold the phone, dude. I was just trying to get my morning coffee, not get kidnapped by some strange man…” An attractive and pleasant smelling strange man.

“Let’s not exaggerate, doll. A rooftop barbeque with the Avengers is hardly kidnapping.”

Your eyes go wide. You know who the strange cute man is. How did you not see it before? If this was Bucky Barnes, Winter Soldier, they had to have been-shit.

“I had coffee with Captain America and Falcon. Cool cool cool.”

Bucky smirks at your nonchalance. “Does that mean you’re willing go eat ribs with me tonight?”

“I guess I could use a study break.”

I’m MissDavis and I've been writing BBC Sherlock fic since shortly after s3. Most of my work is Johnlock with some occasional Johnlockary thrown in for good measure. Side Effects rated E WIP, currently 10/17 chapters now complete! Sequel to Breakable. Life is a lot better for Sherlock and John than it was a year ago. Yes, John still can't walk and Sherlock is still on antidepressants, but they're married now, and almost everything else is back to their version of normal. They have a dog. Sherlock's solving cases again. But when Moriarty learns of their marriage, he escapes from prison and takes it upon himself to make their lives miserable. Is Sherlock really up to the challenge of catching a criminal whose only goal is to make sure that he and John don't live happily ever after?

Just a Touch rated E John has trouble falling asleep these days. There’s one thing he can do that always seems to help, but he’s stuck in this hotel room with Sherlock and doesn’t think he’ll get the chance. How will he ever find relief and a good night’s sleep?

If You Lead Me rated M Enough time has passed since Mary’s death that John is finally ready to start a new relationship. With Sherlock, he hopes. But given Sherlock’s stated aversion to romantic entanglements, John is a bit worried about being rejected, and doesn’t know how to proceed. Fortunately, there’s someone who can help him along.

Sherlock Is Actually a Cat Person rated E John brings home a kitten. Sherlock is not okay with it.

The Last Time Alone rated E But it wasn’t enough, not for John. He needed more. He needed someone to hold besides a child, and someone to kiss on the lips and not just the top of the head. He needed sly looks across the dinner table and to know if he put Rosie to bed early he might emerge from her room to find a candle lit and dessert served just for two.

The One Where No One Proposes rated G Sherlock inherits his parents’ wedding rings. It’s ridiculous that they mean something to him. He doesn’t plan to do anything with them. Sentiment.

Equal Footing  rated E Sherlock had certainly never shown any interest in women’s footwear, or in seeing John appear as anything but fully male. But five extra inches—that opened up all sorts of interesting possibilities.

NaNoWriMo Has Finished...

So, I want to start off this blog post with a big apology. I’d planned to do, at the very least, weekly updates on my progress, but it was my first time trying to do NaNoWriMo and blog at the same time. Obviously, didn’t go well. I will try to do better next time.

Now, onto the actual post.

So, NaNoWriMo is over. At least for me. Some of you may still be writing, but as of 11:20 pm on November 30, 2018, I am calling my NaNo done.

The result?

I won!

The problem?

I’m nowhere near finished...

I’d gone into NaNo with high expectations, but tried not to overdo it. You could say I was rebelling by working on projects I’d already started, but starting a new project is more suggestion than hard, fast rule, and all words counted towards my word count were new words (if I work on previous projects I NEVER count words written before the event start).

My plan going into NaNo was to finish two books: When Wolves Cry (the one I’m posting on Wattpad) and the final book in a different series was the other. I didn’t finish either. About halfway through NaNo I decided to focus on just the series book, and left When Wolves Cry with a month’s worth of chapters finished.

I’d hoped to get 100k or so done, though really just wanted to finish the books.

I ended NaNoWriMo with 50,300 words. I finished When Wolves Cry Chapters 17-21 and Chapters 13-26 of my other novel.

My feelings are a bit mixed. I’m glad it’s over, glad to have finished, but I’m also disappointed. This month turned out to be a struggle for many reasons, including not feeling well on several days.

On the other hand, I discovered a few things that I think will help me in the future.

Lesson #1: Sprints are your friend.

Honestly, never really bothered with sprints. The closest I went to sprinting was the made dash to finish a chapter when I hadn’t even started it and it was already 11pm.

This year, however, I actually set an alarm for myself and wrote until the timer went off. I learned in ten minutes, going at a more leisurely pace, I can do 500+ words. In 20 minutes, 1k. On previous occasions, I’d wrote a 2-3k chapter in an hour, but it was usually during that mad dash I mentioned. This time though, with the help of sprints, I learned it can do it if I want, whenever I want, so long as I break it down.

I was doing ten minute intervals, but did try twenty. I’ll continue to experiment with other times to see what works best.

Lesson #2: Drafts can be messy, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

Alright, so I know drafts are meant to be messy. They’re not a final product. There’s so much rewriting and editing that goes into them after before they can be considered really good.

Thing is, I’ve always gone into writing with an outline and my idea fleshed out. When I write drafts, I write them from beginning to end, and that tends to be my finished novel looks like. Sure, things are changed here and there. I may move a scene to a different spot or add/delete some things, but I always write a whole chapter.

This year? I let myself skip stuff, and it felt freeing!

See. There is a reason they suggest you start a new project. The fact is, going in with a previously unfinished project can lead to forgotten plot lines, characters, etc. It can also mean having a hard time connecting again with the story and characters.

It was so hard to write my story. It took me so long to finish a chapter, and I was dreading writing. Nothing was working. The story just wouldn’t come out.

Then I got to a chapter, and had enough. I looked at my outline, saw what was there, and decided that I’d skip a good chunk of it. So, after making note of it in a separate document, I did just that.

And it worked! I was able to continue on with the next portion without any problems. It was like I gave myself a new start, even though I was in the middle of my novel.

We have to remember that drafts are just that. Drafts. They’re meant to give us a starting point, not an end point.

Lesson #3: When you aren’t feeling well, don’t force it.

There were years pass where I would have powered through anything to finish. And sure, I had years back then where I did anywhere from 100k-200k because of it. Do I miss those years? Yes. But, sometimes you need to take care of yourself first.

Didn’t sleep well and feel too groggy to focus? Take a nap. Have a splitting migraine? Relax. Can’t seem to focus at all? Take a break.

You don’t have to kill yourself to finish your novel.

Doesn’t mean using all of that as an excuse not to write. No one is forcing us to write, but if you want to write, you can’t just wait for inspiration to hit all the time. However, it doesn’t mean that writing should be painful, not physically at least.

Take time for your health and peace of mind.

Only three lessons, but they’re important ones that I think we sometimes forget in the craziness of NaNoWriMo or any big project.

Anyways, for anyone who participated, hope your month was filled with a lot of creativity. Just remember, winning or losing isn’t the point. That fact that you sat down and wrote is awesome, and you’re awesome for trying!

For those still writing, keep going, friends! Can’t wait to see you on the other side of the finish line!

Okay, so, why did the football coach go to the bank?” he waits for Louis’ weary shake of the head, the tiniest smile peeking from the corners of his mouth. “To get his quarter back!” or, Single Parent Harry loses his six year old daughter in a corn maze and embarks on an adventurous adventure with single parent Louis to find her. Only Reason - “We are so lucky to have with us one of the leading experts on beekeeping in the modern age, Dr. Louis Draper.” No. No, no, no… “I know I speak for many of us when I say that this man’s books have guided our practice, or helped us get started,” Harry continued, and Louis watched as the crowd nodded their heads in agreement. Oh shit. No. What? No. But then Harry was gesturing towards him, saying “Dr. Draper?” into the microphone, the crowd was applauding, and Louis found himself walking up the stairs to the stage. Or, Louis is most definitely smitten with Harry from the second he sees him, but he is also most definitely not the world's foremost expert on beekeeping. Sympathy For The Devil - Louis keeps stealing some of Harry’s mail, which would be annoying for anyone, but it’s especially troubling when you consider that Harry is Santa Claus. Harry will have to go through hell to get Louis to stop. Literally.Or the one with Santa Harry and Satan Louis and a series of misspelled letters to Santa. I made a map of your stars - Harry does not have a crush on Louis Tomlinson. Yes, Louis is very pretty and funny, and Harry may have had more than a few inappropriate thoughts about him, but he certainly doesn’t like him. (Except for the fact that he totally does.) or, Harry is the shy boy in the back of the class that no one really notices. Louis is the loud, outgoing football player that everybody likes.  (one shot, 5k)

Accidentally On My Way To Loving You - “So,” H said, “Who are you.”Louis froze. The fork nearly slipped from his hand. So this was it then. The jig was up. He sounded like a total creeper. The Stories That I Can’t Explain -  “Are you closing?” the woman asked, rushing into Louis' store. “I just have to pick something up!” “I’m really sorry, but if you come back on Tuesday, we’ll be opening again at normal time,” Louis told her, trying to get her out of the shop. “No, please! I-” The woman dropped her head, and Louis watched in horror as she started crying. He didn’t do well with tears. “Please, I just have to pick up a ring, it’s- It’s for my brother, and he’s well… He’s dying. And it’s really important that I get it.” Louis could feel his mouth drop open even farther than it already had been. “Um…” Just then, a man walked into the store. He took one look at the woman and rolled his eyes. “Gemma, you haven’t told another stranger that I’m dying, have you?” he asked. The woman, Gemma apparently, turned to face him. “Of course I didn’t, Harry,” she said. --- Or, the one where no one is actually dying, but Gemma likes to lie about Harry's livelihood to get what she wants. Are you sure your neighbor doesn’t like it fast like that?” “With the amount of cleaning the guy does, I think he’s taking out his sexual frustration on the cleanliness of his apartment. I can’t imagine the guy makes enough mess to require daily vacuuming.” It sounded like the guy was actually moving furniture above him as he was sweeping now. Damn. Lovin’ It Up - What did Niall know? This had nothing to do with the few times (okay, countless times) Louis had pined over the idea of Hot Neighbor while drinking. Nothing at all. So what if he had perfect lips and long legs and the cutest little curls around his ears? Certainly not Louis.He continued to scribble away, most of his words indiscernible except for one written in large letters at the very top of the napkin: REVENGE Or, a neighbors AU in which Louis vows to get revenge on the guy who didn't hold the elevator for him - no matter how ridiculously attractive he may be. come on, jump out at me - Harry is a witch from a long line of power, an ancient line that’s one of the strongest left alive in their hemisphere. He can cast spells without a word if need be, fly on a broomstick, and has a black cat (a kitten, really) named Felix that is his animal familiar. He can shape galaxies in his cupped hands and can destroy them just as easily. He can choose exactly how to use his power, for encouragement and support, or for more nefarious causes if he wishes to. And as fate would have it, he’s scared of haunted houses. (Harry is a witch who carries around a stuffed pumpkin, Louis is a vampire with too much time on his hands, and their best mates Zayn & Niall aren't exactly what they seem...)  (one shot, 7k, part of a continuing and very good series)

Fake It Till We Make It - #33- Keeping up with the Neighbors“We can fake it.”What?“What?” “You heard me.” “No I did not. Say it again.” “I said” Harry started slowly, “We can fake having sex to teach them a lesson.” It was clear to say that Louis's mouth went a little dry at the suggestion. Or ,Their neighbours were a bit too loud during their bedroom activities and Harry comes up with the worst plan to shut them up. Louis agrees anyways. (one shot, 7k, pretty smutty also) added 2/7/19

I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm -  Louis takes a deep breath, and replies very quickly to get it over with, “Well, see, I don’t have any heat in my flat right now and it’s hard enough to go to sleep when I’m bloody freezing—” “Oh god. And my music’s gone and made it even worse,” Harry cuts in. “Well, it only went out today,” Louis explains, “So it wasn’t that bad before, erm. Now.” “Before?” Harry asks, horrified. “How long has this been?” “Oh, erm,” Louis folds his hands where they hang in front of him and admits, “All week.” Harry visibly wilts. He looks so sad, it makes Louis feel awful. He’s gone and crushed someone’s Christmas spirit. Some beautiful boy who looks like Danny Zuko is sad now and it’s Louis’ fault, which means he doesn’t stand a chance at being the cute neighbor from the floor below. And now he’s going to have to sleep in his freezing cold flat knowing he may as well have ruined Christmas. We have lived in our home for over 4 years and until this Spring, we have completely neglected our deck. I am not a huge fan of our deck layout, but replacing a deck is a lot of work and a lot of money, so we opted for a less expensive approach. I knew that if we were really going to use this space, we would need a more intimate/private area. We have zero trees in our yard and the backyard is on a slope, so the houses behind us can see directly into our backyard. We do like our neighbors, but with them basically living on top of us it makes for an awkward situation when you end up staring at each other. BUT…after the longest winter ever, the last place I want to be (when the weather is nice) is cooped up in the house. So I decided to finally make our backyard a priority. Fortunately for me, my hubby was on board. 🙌🏼 We definitely had our work cut out for us. There was so much to do. Mulching, power washing the house, cleaning the deck, painting the deck, finding affordable outdoor furniture, and landscaping.😩 Our goal was to stay under $1k for everything. That is a lot of money, but with everything we needed/wanted to do, we were being extremely optimistic. The first thing we did was clean the deck. It was pretty gross. 😷 After the deck was cleaned, it was ready to be painted. I went with white for the paint color. Shocker, huh? My hubby was not excited about my paint choice, but now that it is done, he loves it. Painting a deck is a big job! Especially when you have a ginormous one. So instead of trying to bust through in one weekend, I set small goals. One weekend I dedicated to the octagon. The next weekend, the remaining deck. I hit the first goal. The second one, not so much. In my defense, it rained the day I planned to do it, then the next weekend was Mother’s Day weekend. Which is why I decided to make a part I & II. Part II should be up in a couple of weeks-ish. However, the part of the deck that is done, looks 1000 times better! Don’t you think? The morning after I got the octagon done, my hubby saw it and said at first he thought it had snowed the night before. 😂 After painting the octagon, I started working on the privacy screens since I couldn’t finish painting due to the weather. I initially planned on buying a screen, but I couldn’t find one that I liked or was big enough. My plan was to have a screen that would block the side of the octagon that overlooks our neighbors houses. The only screen I semi-liked was $400 and only 5′ wide. I needed a screen that was triple that width, so I went with plan B. Pinterest. I made three screens, all 6 feet tall and 5 feet wide, and paid around $165 for all the materials. I bought treated wood to build the screens as it is rot and insect resistant. And it will hold up in all-weather conditions. For those of you interested, the material list and details to make this privacy screen is at the bottom of this post. 2 hours and 3 privacy screens later… 😍 Then we waited for our outdoor furniture to arrive…and what do you know? The furniture was delivered on my birthday. 😁 So of course I asked my hubby to assemble it, since it was my birthday and all. 😆 He wasn’t amused, but he did help. Thanks, hubby! It is crazy expensive. 💸 After hours of looking online for affordable outdoor furniture, I finally found THIS set that my hubby and I both love! Shop this Post DIY Privacy Screen Materials: 3 – 6′ x 4″ x 1″ treated wood planks (feet/vertical pieces) 10 – 6′ x 6″ x 1″ treated wood planks (screen/horizontal pieces) 30 – 1 1/4″ wood screws table saw Electric screwdriver tape measure pencil 2″ deck screws Step 1: Measure all your cuts. Our deck railing is in 5 feet sections, so I cut the 10 – 6′ x 6″ x 1″ to 5 feet to completely cover each section. You’ll want to cut your wood based on your space, so make sure you measure it before you purchase the wood. I would not recommend making the screen longer than 6 feet across as the wood is heavy. Step 2: Cut your wood. Make sure you buy treated wood! If you don’t have a table saw, Lowe’s will cut it for you. 😊 If you have a table saw I would recommend cutting your wood as wood width/length can vary from plank to plank. Also, I would recommend cutting one piece at a time incase the feet are not 100% straight. Step 3: On a flat surface (I laid out the pieces on the deck), align 2 of the – 6′ x 4″ x 1″. Depending on the size you want to make your screen, you’ll want to the feet to be flush with the edges of the horizontal planks. Step 4: Take 1 of the 5′ (horizontal) planks and lay it across the top where the side and top of the horizontal plank is flush to the feet. See the picture below for reference. Step 5: Drill 1 – 1 1/4″ wood screw into each end secure the feet to the horizontal plank. Step 6: Using a tape measure and pencil, measure 1″ down from the bottom of the horizontal plank on each side and mark it. See photo below for reference. Step 7: Take another 5′ horizontal piece and align it to the 1″ marks then drill each end to secure the horizontal piece to the feet. Step 8: Repeat steps 5-7 until all planks are secured to the feet. Step 9: Flip the screen over. You might need help. The screen is heavy. Step 10: Measure the space in between the two feet and find the center. Mark where the center is, then take the 3rd 6′ x 4″ x 1″ piece and align it to the center. Step 11: Secure the center foot by adding a screw down the plank. I did it this way so there were screws on each side duet the weight of the screen. I wanted to make sure it was extra secure so a gust of wind wouldn’t blow it down. Step 12: Line the screen up where you want it to stand and while someone is holding it, use the deck screws to screw the screen into the deck railing. Our railing needs replaced, which is why I didn’t mind drilling into it. Also, I did it this way so when we move we can easily remove the screens. Step 13: Repeat the process for additional screens.            “Miss Higurashi?” Kagome and Kikyo looked over their shoulders in synch, searching for the person that called out for them. Sesshomaru nodded at the two women when he realized he had their attention. It was strange seeing the two; their similarities were striking. Shippo tugged at Kagome’s hand to get her attention.

           “Kagome! Who’s he?”

           Kaede squeezed herself behind Kikyo, peering out at Sesshomaru. “Shippo! Don’t call elder sister Kagome so familiarly!” Kikyo patted Kaede’s head to calm the girl down before she reached for Shippo’s other hand.

           “Now, you two.” Kikyo bent over to look the two children in the eyes as Kagome and Sesshomaru looked on with small smiles. “Remember what big sister Kagome and I said? When you meet someone new…”

           Shippo beamed at the girls and pulled his hand from the twins’ grips, “Properly introduce yourself! Hi!” The small boy bounded up to Sesshomaru and craned his neck back so he could look into Sesshomaru’s face, far, far up. “My name is Shippo! That wimp over there—“

           “Shippo!”

           “I’m not a wimp!” Kaede rushed towards Shippo, ready to fight the boisterous boy.

           Kikyo frowned, “Kaede!” The girl froze in her spot and turned to look at Kikyo. Kagome shook her head and looked back to Sesshomaru. She shrugged when he rose his eyebrow in silent question. Kaede was always attached to Kikyo, far more than Kagome at any rate. It was an open secret that Kaede wanted to grow up to be just like Kikyo, and she was already taking Kyuudou after school. As Kikyo quietly spoke to Kaede, Kagome reclaimed her sstudent and apologized to Sesshomaru for the two.

           “I didn’t expect to see you until a bit later, Mr. Nishioka.” Sesshomaru bowed his head in polite apology. “Since you’re already here, would you like to join us?”

           “If you don’t mind me bringing along my own ward, I would be delighted.”

           Kikyo pulled Kaede over so they could join the conversation, “Your ward?”

           Sesshomaru waved his hand toward the car behind him. Peering out from the window was a little girl and a small man. Once he realized everyone’s attention was on him, he straightened out and gently opened the door for the little girl. She jumped out while his nose was in the air so he was a second too late to stop her.

           “Rin! You inelegant child! You are shaming my lord!” Shippo giggled as soon as the man’s tinny voice finished off. The small man blushed up to his ears and stepped out of the car after Rin. Even standing, he barely reached Kagome’s chest, and had narrow shoulders that seemed to curve in. His skin was clammy and pale, wrinkled with age and a horrible distemper. Rin was the toad’s opposite with her rosy cheeks and brilliant exuberance. She looked about Shippo’s age and just as cheerful.

           “My lord?” Kagome looked up at Sesshomaru, her question clear to the man.

           “If you remember, my family is rather old. Jaken refuses to bow to the modern day.”

           Kagome giggled. “I don’t know. I think it suits you Mr. Nishioka.”

           Kikyo clicked her tongue and Kagome wrinkled her nose as if Kikyo just scolded her. Sometimes Kagome wondered why Kaede was so in love with Kikyo. She was so strict! “Fine!” No one else knew why Kagome said “fine”, but it was clear it had to do with the silent conversation she and Kikyo had in just a glance. “Sorry Mr. Nishioka. I got side-tracked.” She stuck her tongue out as if embarrassed. “This is my sister Kikyo, and before you ask, we are twins. As you already know, this is Shippo,” Kagome ruffled Shippo’s fluffy hair with a grin. “And this is Kaede.”

           Sesshomaru bowed his head to them. “Jaken is my personal aide. He assists with my business and keeps an eye on Rin. Well,” he smirked, “he tries to. This one is Rin, my ward.”

           Finally all acquainted, Sesshomaru offered to take them all to lunch. What was supposed to be a date between Kagome and Sesshomaru quickly devolved into a group outing. Rin and Shippo got along splendidly, just as expected, and the two already began running around. Kaede alternated between sticking by the Higurashi twins and playing with the younger children. She wasn’t that much older, but those few years made a palpable distance between her and the other two children.

           Jaken resigned himself to the background, leaving Sesshomaru to talk with Kagome and Kikyo. After trying to get away one last time, Kikyo gave up. “So, Mr. Nishioka,” she sat at a picnic table. They had moved towards the center of the small shopping district. A fountain dominated almost half of the space and children chased each other back and forth in the water’s spray. Shippo and Rin quickly joined the other children, whereas Kaede hung back unsure. Kagome sat to Kikyo’s side and Sesshomaru sat opposite them, but straddled the bench so he could keep an eye on the children as well. Jaken stayed closer to the fountain to keep a better eye on the girls and boy. “How do you end up with a ward in this day and age?”

           Sesshomaru frowned, his brows twitching together for a moment. “A few years ago, there was a car accident. A drunk driver hit her, and drove off. I was the one who took her to the hospital and took care of her for some time. I found out her parents had already passed away, so I took her in.” Kagome grimaced. She and Kikyo asked two totally different kinds of awkward questions. At least you could call Kagome eccentric or funny. A lot of people called Kikyo cold. Not that she was as cold as she seemed. It was fortunate Sesshomaru seemed just as able to handle Kikyo’s awkward as Kagome’s.

           “May I ask what your relationship with those two is, Miss Higurashi?”

As I said at the top, I don’t feel like this chapter is complete. I also have a note to make about the following few weeks’ updates. Next weekend I’m driving up to Arizona with my family in the evening then I’ll probably be crashing. On top of that, I have a 1500 word paper I have to do. I’m actually going to try working on that before then though. But I procrastinate, so we’ll see what happens. I actually plan on posting either the day before or that morning, like I did today (yesterday? It is past midnight… hahaha… ;-;). The next weekend I’m getting back from a trip with my boyfriend and if I don’t already have my honors done, I’ll be spending the weekend doing that since it’s due the following Monday. 25-30 pages guys. That’s a lot. I have no idea what I’ll do about my post then. Hopefully have it written up already. Unlikely… Finally, the next weekend will be dedicated to just crying. I just want to cry right now. God. Kill me. But I’ll be trying my best to post on time. But I know for sure that these three weeks will be hit or miss. Sorry guys.

So I am no long part of an california HMO plan, so now I have to get insurance on my own. Problem is that I am making about $800 / month (part time work) while going to school full time. Both my parents are on government low-income plans, so I cant put them as primary policy holders while I get student rates. One question I have about deductibles is when to pay it? For example, a plan that has $1,500 deductible / $0 doctor visits, do I have to pay the full value of that office visit to the doctor? Hi, Myself and a friend will be travelling to California next month to purchase a 1960s vw campervan. We will be driving it to the shipping port to export it back to the uk. I've been told we can get a temporary registration which lasts 28 days and will allow us to drive the van. I've been on the californian DMV website but cannot find any more information or the forms. no email address either! I was hit from behind on Wednesday evening heading to work. The driver was ticketed by the police and their insurance company has admitted full liability. Injury wise, I have whiplash which thankfully, is going away now. My car, according to their adjuster, is going to be claimed as totaled. So, my car is valued at 7400, and repairs just from visual inspection, are 7015. So they are going the totaled route as its cheaper for them. After they buy the car from me, they will sell it to salvage, expect to get 2k from it, and only be out 5400 instead of a full cost of repairs. So I've had the car for a year and half, taken out on a 5yr car loan. I still owe 12k on it. After they cut a check to the lean holder, I'm still responsible for 5k on that loan. The bank and my insurance at the time didn't offer gap insurance. Stupid of me, I let my current policy expire to search around for a more affordable policy. I kept procrastinating, and the accident happened with me having no insurance. Lucky he hit me and is at fault. I'm trying to see what my options are. I've gone to the liable company's website and see their basic plan for my state, law requires 25k in property liability for at fault accidents, plus medical etc. So I'm wondering what should I expect from the lady handling this claim. I'm not fooled when she called me yesterday and said that she is here to work with and for me. Saying that there is probably a lot of talk about lawyers, just know they will take 30-40% of you settlement. Know that I'm here to work for you, try to work with me I'm thinking my head total bull crap. 1, she works for her insurance company first, and will have their interest first, 2, she works for their client and to protect them from me in a suit. In the end, I'm not stuck with a car that they will not fully pay to have repaired, and will still owe 5k after they pay the loan holder the value of the car. My credit is damaged and getting a new loan is probably not going to happen easily. I really don't want to get a lawyer but I now have a car sitting in my driveway that I can't use plus a balance in the end. Anyone got some suggestions as to what I should realistically expect.
