New year, new Fandometrics!

The world bid farewell to 2023 and rang in 2024, welcoming the initial Steamboat Willie version of Mickey Mouse into the public domain in predictably interesting ways, including drawing comparisons between the original Mickey and Sonic the Hedgehog’s eye styles. Fans are halfway through the live-action Percy Jackson and the Olympians show, and the general consensus is “protect these children at all costs.” Kenna Jean Harris, the story lead of Luca and director of Ciao Alberto, confirmed that Luberto is canon, so congrats to those fish boys and everyone who ships them. The highly anticipated anime adaptation of beloved manga Dungeon Meshi has begun airing. And we’ve made some small changes to this year’s Fandometrics lists. This is Tumblr’s Week in Review.

Yes, that was me!!

I saw the data and I was kind of surprised. I mean, I know I said this would happen, but seeing Buck/Tommy rank over Buddie so quickly was surprising—especially since we just got the Bachelor party scene on Thursday. Were this two years ago, we would have been in the #1 slot easily.

Additionally, I was looking at Instagram comments on 911's post about the Buck/Tommy kiss. Obviously, there were a lot of Buddie comments there and those comments had a lot of engagement (likes). But there were way more Buck/Tommy positive comments this week than there were last week. What's more than that is, there weren't just BuckTommy Positive or Buddie Positive comments, there were also Buddie Negative comments, which I did not expect. Most of the Buddie Negative comments were people saying that Buddie was never going to happen at any point (which I don't agree with, by the way; the implication surrounding their relationship is pretty explicit in the text, so I immediately discarded that as someone just shitting on young queer peoples' interests). But there were other comments that implied that Buddie shouldn't happen, and I thought those comments held a lot more weight as the reasoning behind those thought processes was that the relationship would be too cliche and that Buck and Eddie's relationship would be more impactful as "brothers."

So that was interesting. Unpleasant, because Buddie are still my special little guys and I don't like people being mean to them/us, but interesting nonetheless.

Relative to the projected outlook: My prediction is that how the fandom leans over hiatus is going to depend entirely on the finale. If Season 7 ends with a nod or slant toward Buddie, the multishippers who are currently leaning toward BuckTommy are going to lean back toward Buddie and thus the tide will be in Buddie's favor throughout the hiatus into Season 8. But if the finale leans more toward BuckTommy, the number of BuckTommy shippers is going to increase with the definitive (or at least implied) confirmation that Tommy will be around for a while, which will push Buddie to #5 or #6 in the fandometrics and punt BuckTommy to #1 or #2 at the lowest.

At least, that's my prediction.

For what it's worth, though, many casual viewers are already convinced and on board with Buck/Tommy + Tommy's permanence so it'll be interesting to see how their interaction in the comments competes with the comments of active fans who are participating in this ship-war. I suspect that Buddie hostility will drive people toward Buck/Tommy out of spite and engagement on Buck/Tommy posts + comments will continue to climb, reaching the thousands by early-mid hiatus.

But we shall see!

Ok, honest question, and please don’t call me homophobic, but why are 90% of the shippers SO invested in seeing Dean/Jensen hooked up with another man, are in fact hetero or gay women? Never realized so many women were turned on by gay men. Especially, gay women. Is this a thing?

This is a great question and I love these discussions. Sometimes the "women" in question are exploring their gender identities and come to realize that they aren't cis. However, it's super common for cis women to enjoy real or imaged queer male romance and sexual relationship.

It's existed in fandom as long as fandom has been around. Before the internet, women were exchanging print media about Spock/Kirk. It's also cross cultural. For example, Yaoi/Boy's Love is a genre of media about men in same-sex relationships.

In an interview with a famous scifi writer, Mariko Ohara says,

As for me, I started writing yaoi, not as an imitation of others, but as a narrative (in those days, we called this kind of fiction simply the homosexual novel) necessary for the description of sexual love in my imagination. Probably I was not able to enjoy the conventional pornography, which had been made for men; I feel impatient with its patriarchal form. This is why I could not help but produce a new style of sexual love. And I was not the only one who thought this way. It is the female imperative that produced yaoi fiction in Japan and other countries simultaneously.

She wrote Kirk/Spock as a way to explore herself and the world around her.

There are some queer men who see this fascination as no different than straight men who enjoy lesbian porn. Just as most lesbian porn is made by men for men and is rarely seen as authentic by actual lesbians, so it is for a lot of content produced about queer men in fandom.

This article talks about how a woman admitted to enjoying gay porn on tiktok and was harassed for it. The article notes that women represent more than 1/3 of the views on Pornhub's gay male videos.

Lots of different theories have emerged as to why this exists. The article notes

[T]he majority of heterosexual porn is created by men, for men, and is therefore not reflective of female desire. In turn, these women resort to watching porn created for a demographic that’s been similarly marginalized, since gay men, too, have historically had their desires ignored and their representation in erotic texts co-opted.

...Dr. Lucy Neville has interviewed more than 500 women over five years on this very subject. In her research for the book, Girls Who Like Boys Who Like Boys: Women and Gay Male Pornography and Erotica, Neville found that, similar to what Layla, Kirah and other likeminded women shared with me, women’s reasoning for liking gay porn was more about what they didn’t like about straight porn than what they enjoyed about gay male porn. 

Since fandom is often composed of women, especially queer women, women feel more free to share their sexual desires.

What's more, often people kink on what they fear. Tumblr's fandometrics showed that fandom leans left. If you look at A/B/O, which was created in the Supernatural fandom, it's basically kinking on the patriarchy. By using male characters and subjecting men to extreme patriarchy, it can be easier to enjoy the story as a fantasy.

Wish I could dive into this topic more, but it's huge to the point where multiple books have been written on the subject and there's lots of essays and studies examining the subject.

ohh I am so glad I am using twitter less the twt phannies are having discourse again about if you are allowed to think dan and phil act cute together (which yeah most people assume it's in a coupley way but if on the off chance they're actually not a couple then they are still cute and gay besties??? literally doesn't change much???) or that it's bad to wonder if they are soft launching their relationship because of stuff they have said that implies it? like obviously don't tag them in stuff and I get being nervous that they will get recommended stuff on twitter but like, if you keep it to tumblr or discord or your small or private twitter then whatever I don't think it's that big of a deal. they didn't like the speculation when they were in the closet because it became such a huge focus that people were messaging them about it, violating their privacy, other YouTubers were making fun of them or trying to expose them, it was putting a lot of pressure on them to come out, etc (which I think that is what Dan was addressing in BIG and people misunderstand that part because what he said was a little bit clunky in terms of how he organized it because it was hard to talk about!) but I don't think they care if people in fan spaces have opinions on what their relationship is a long as we respect their right to talk about that kind of stuff on their own terms. like the way I view it is like if you had some friends that you thought were maybe dating or flirting and then were like "aw yeah they're cute" or "hmm I wonder if they're..." to your other friends. like I don't think it's cool to say it to the people in question's faces if they haven't openly talked about it yet but I don't think it's bad to wonder based on things you have observed??? idk personally I'm always noticing details and analyzing things because my personality is just like that and sometimes I like to talk about it, not in a spreading gossip way but like an, "in confidence" kind of way to get a second opinion out of curiosity. and like ultimately your want should be for people to be happy and they are the only ones who can decide what kind of relationship/s make them happy and you can respect that while wondering or having an opinion that you don't announce to them (and like, dnp tend to understand that indirects / tumblr / etc are meant for other fans and not them and that if they go looking through tags and stuff that they are going to potentially see these opinions or observations).

also like, I think they really don't care as much now that they are out because the pressure / fear has gone away and now they make jokes about it and call themselves phan and make fun of phannies lol. I think part of the reason that so many people are drawn to their relationship in the first place too is because they are these funny relatable (neurodivergent?) queer parasocial figures in what appears to be a strong / supportive relationship, whether they are together or are queer exes who are still besties and/or queerplatonic and roommates. like we love to see them being themselves / being queer together, whatever that means for them!!! because they've even acknowledged that before they were out they were still queer representation in the sense that a lot of times they subverted society's expectations of masculine friendships in their videos just by being themselves.

also dnp have been very loud about certain things lately I don't think it's weird to be like... are they going to finally reveal something because their behavior lately has been kinda wild! (although maybe they won't because they don't want the general public / locals / news attention about it that might actually be more annoying than the standard/familiar attention from a lot of their fandom and like that's completely fine too).

Idk there is just this weird virtue signaling on twitter that is very annoying to me. like personally I am like yeah a lot of stuff points to them being in a romantic relationship but I could be wrong and either way I really love them and the relationship that they do have and show us on camera. but one doesn't have to qualify with that every time when saying "aw they are cute!" or making an observation about something on your own blog or small account...

honestly if what comes off as virtue signaling to me is actually coming from a place of care, I do respect that... I just also think that some people go out of their way to police or denounce behavior because they are afraid of being identified with people who were actually harmful to dnp when I don't think the behavior they are being mad at in this instance is actually harmful and more so just a natural side effect of being parasocially invested in these two queer guys who have spent most of fourteen years together and have confirmed that their relationship has been "more than just romantic."

How 'bout that Riverdale finale, y'all?

After seven bizarre seasons, Riverdale finally ended in the most Riverdale-possible way. The cast of What We Do In The Shadows sat down with us before the SAG strike and answered a ton of your questions, which you can see here. It's August in the year 2023, so of course the Destiel confession made news again and trended, like, super hard. The first two episodes of Ahsoka have fans clamoring for more.
