I would like to call attention to something about the new puss in boots movie that I haven't really seen many folks talk about:
The Excellent Character Re-Design of Kitty Softpaws, or: How to Animate Female Animals
take a look at these posters for the original Puss in Boots film from 2011
look at the unnaturally arched back. the overdrawn illusion of her "chest". the extra long lashes. The larger eyes and smaller muzzle. This Cat Is A Girl, they're saying. Girl Cat Has Pretend Boobs And Cat Makeup. Boy cat is just a cat, but This one is a Girl.
NOW.
let's look at some stills and posters for the new one that just came out, shall we?
their muzzles are about the same size and shape. her chest isn't abnormally extended to create Cat Boobs. she doesn't have false eyelashes anymore.
look at this still. their bodies are almost the same shape. their paws are the same size. their eyes-to-muzzle ratio is almost exactly the same.
the illusion of Feminine Hips is no more, her belt stays up the same way his does. for the most part, they have the slight differences in appearance you'd expect from two different cats.
TLDR: even besides for being a truly excellent sequel with surprisingly dark thematic material, the animation team did a great job with their character designs. highly recommend!
