do you ever find yourself bedeviled by writing ideas that are the equivalent of finding a single carrot in your fridge. your brain goes "we should write a pirate story" or "we should write a parisian thief caper" and you ask, "all right, what do we cook with that, then?" and it says "no other ingredients (:"
The Characters or Plot question is so interesting because depending on the type of story you're working on, even having the most basic plot can become interesting as hell with good characters.
I know not ALL stories are character driven, but they still add that special something.
Maybe it's just my own preference of character to plot (not to say I don't appreciate plot), or it really is just a matter of view, but you can't deny the power it holds
Here are my best tips to write powerful women in your novel!
Power doesn’t equal physical strength. Make sure first and foremost that the only reason your powerful woman is powerful is not just that she’s a badass fighter. That can come off quite shallow and stereotypical.
Give her complexity instead. Being powerful doesn’t mean ruthless or emotionless. She should still have a human motivation, and human emotions.
Don’t pit her against other women or have her put down other women with the intent of seeming more powerful.
Power comes in all forms. There is no one type of powerful woman. A woman is powerful because she made herself that way. An emotionally intelligent woman can have just as much power as a physically inclined one.
Strength and power come from persistence, so keep this in mind as you write. How many times has she been knocked down, but remained standing? In other words: work out a good backstory to how she found her power. It often comes from dark places.
This is a big one of my wishes - for women in power to still keep their kindness, despite the cruelty of the world, if it’s what makes them who they are. They shouldn’t have to change for anyone or anything. Real power is remaining true to yourself.
