I don't look like my mom. Actually, I don't look like anyone in my immediate family, which is why as a kid, when my brothers teased me that I was adopted, I believed them (let me point out they were 18/16 years old - too old to be mean to their sister :P). ⠀ Nowadays, people tell me that I have my mother's eyes and kindness. I have a hard time believing that because she was graciousness embodied. Maybe it is because I still see her with the eyes of a 9-year old or because people only tell you the good stories of those who have passed. ⠀ I choose to believe those stories though sometimes I wish I could remember what her: - 😡anger felt like (was it sharp and quick), - 🥲tears tasted of (did they stay in her eyes and refuse to fall) - 🙁her petulance sounded like (did she whine in a high pitch). ⠀ I wonder who she was on her darker days - did she draw and shape her pain like me, creating walls and arming herself with daggers. ⠀ *𝙏𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙠 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙚 💕 𝙡𝙤𝙫𝙚 𝙖𝙨 𝙄 𝙨𝙝𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙨𝙚 𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙨. Resolution 4: Big Sky Dream ⠀ Sometimes we don't fully understand how childhood trauma can affect our lives, and shape our outlook. ⠀ For me, it was the conviction that I would be dead by the time I was 37. ⠀ I didn't know this for a long time, but this is a common belief for children who grow up seeing young loved ones die from disease. We internalize the idea that we are on a shorter timeline than everyone else. ⠀ The internalized knowledge of my imminent death date meant I planned, and dreamed life to 37 - never considering that I would have to worry about old age. ⠀ Fast forward to now. I am 42 and still here. Saying, “What now?” ⠀ The dreams I had set for myself - to be a published writer, create policy change (worked on the City of Toronto Human trafficking and forced marriage files), presented at over 10 conferences, been on TV and radio, had my poetry published on the TTC, working for myself, working on global causes - I did them all. ⠀ Now I am confronted with the question, "What now?" ⠀ How do I plan for a life I never accounted for? And more importantly, how do I face the decisions I made betting on temporality? ⠀ My January was tough, as I was confused and stuck on my “what now”. ⠀ Luckily, a good friend challenged me. She told me, “I know you have more dreams than that. I know for sure you dream of the beach and sunsets over the water. She said: Be proud of what you have accomplished because it's incredible. Stop limiting your dreams. 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝟮: 𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀: 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝘂𝗺. ⠀ I am forgiving myself for the bad days, and the times I feel like I am sliding backwards. The first time I felt great about my life, I was in a place of pure joy -- then, one day, I woke up and felt like I was heading nowhere. One event (which I can't remember) put me in negative and trauma-based habits. As we heal our superficial scars, I am learning that we unearth ones we aren't aware of. Sometimes it makes us feel like we are going backwards, but we are continuing to heal. ⠀ I also remind myself that all the scars we carry don't heal all at once. We could be doing great in one area of our lives and still struggling in others. Some parts we heal easier - because time and circumstances have brought the right people (even when they can feel wrong), lessons and love in your life. Resolution 1: Kindness ⠀ I made a few resolutions this year and going to share them. ⠀ The first is to be kinder to me this year - inspired by my friends, who do what any good friends should do - smack me upside the head. Though they all do it in their way - kind words, challenges, making me reflect, or literally giving me the "what are you saying look." ⠀ January can be a hard month for me. On top of the start of the new year - which we all tend to think about another year passing, it is also after my birthday - so I tend to feel doubly "aged" -I feel older, and I feel the passing of 2021. ⠀ My friends and family sit with me in silence, noise and love supporting me as I process. They remind me that trying is okay. I don't have to be perfect. I called this poem, “Lessons from my Mother: Friendship.” ⠀ Even though my mom passed away when I was young, she left me with a lot of lessons. The first being the power of female friendship and sisterhood. My mom’s friends raised us as one of their own. They kept her memory for us and shared her warmth and kindness. They taught me how to be a good person and friend. ⠀ In a society where female friends is often portrayed as catty, competitive and b*tchy - they were my first counter narrative.
