pedro pascal x oc chapter summary: pedro and devon's first "date" series masterlist
Tumblr media
Pedro and I hadn't spoken since that PR meeting. I knew I set myself up poorly with my snide behavior that day, but I'm not sure I would honestly change anything given the chance. I couldn't see any benefits coming out of my being docile other than avoiding conflict, and I was not one to roll over so easily.
When I got an email with details of our first 'relationship' outing, though, I remained entirely silent. The date, time, location, and styling instructions were all listed clearly with no room for amendments.
We arrived at the restaurant together- Pedro in the driver's seat beside me. He picked me up at my house on the other side of town, which surprised me. I don't know why I assumed someone else would drive us. It made the whole thing feel much more real, even though we barely spoke three words between us during the entire ride.
I had been looking out the passenger window the last few minutes, scouring the sidewalks for the scheduled paparazzi when I finally saw him on the street corner. I straightened my posture and smoothed my palms down my jean-clad thighs. Pedro must have noticed him too, as he suddenly sighed and gripped the steering wheel tighter.
As soon as he pulled the car into a parking spot on the front curb, my heart started racing, and I tried to recall every acting experience I had to regain my composure and step into the role that management assigned me. I ran my fingers through my hair one last time as Pedro hopped out of the car swiftly and took long strides until he reached the outside of my door and pulled it open. I smiled at his chivalry, even if it was all for show. Pedro cast another glance toward the glaringly obvious paparazzi behind us before placing his hand gently on my lower back to guide me in front of him.
We stepped into the quaint restaurant and were instantly greeted by the hostess. She asked if it was just the two of us even after picking up only two menus and exiting her post at the host stand, as if she had been expecting us all morning. She probably had. We followed her to an empty table in the front corner of the dining area. It was filled with natural lights and vines of what looked like large and healthy philodendrons twisted across the ceiling forming a green canopy above us. I always wanted my apartment to look this lush, but my natural light could never support it. The hostess informed us our waiter, Johnny, would be with us shortly before she walked back to the host stand, long ponytail swaying behind her.
It was then that Pedro finally looked at me. "Didn't know there was gonna be huge fucking windows around the whole place," he muttered, barely breaking his practiced smile.
"You really think they'd let us off that easy?" I matched his posture and leaned closer to him for good measure, resting my elbows on the table.
Sure enough, Johnny arrived almost immediately. He was tall and on the slender side, but I could tell from the way his button up stretched over his shoulders that he was all muscle. His dark hair was tied in a messy knot at the base of his skull, which suited him surprisingly well. I liked to believe that I'm on the more subtle side when I check someone out, but Johnny did not match that. His gray eyes were practically glued to my chest, and he had to clear his throat twice before asking us what we would like to drink. If I weren't with Pedro, I would've teased him about it, but I didn't. Pedro ordered a local IPA. I got a lemonade.
Pedro scoffed when Johnny left, and shook his head. I could tell he noticed the exchange between us, but instead of mentioning it, he asked, "You been here before?"
"No," I hummed, flicking my gaze out the window where a man sat on a bench with a large camera poised in front of his face, "but the green goddess salad looks good." I pointed it out on Pedro's menu, making sure the neckline of my tank top was slouching, but not too much.
Pedro shook his head again, his fingers twitching on top of the table in front of him.
"What?" I asked playfully.
"You're really one of those girls that get a salad for every meal?"
I scoffed. Who was he to have an opinion on women's diets? I draped my hand on top of his and tried hiding my disgust. "And if I was?"
Pedro pulled his hand out from my grasp. I thought he would just place it in his lap- retreat fully. But, he leaned impossibly closer, instead, and tucked a stray strand of hair behind my ear.
"Just don't want you to starve, sweetheart."
His touch was gentle. I knew his hands would be, I felt them every day for a month during filming; I was just surprised that his demeanor felt so real. It didn't matter, we were acting, and he was a seasoned actor. I just had to keep reminding myself that this was all fake, and I needed to work hard to match his energy.
Thankfully, the waiter returned at that moment to take our order, interrupting our little game. I did order the salad, Pedro be damned, and he ordered some kind of sandwich. When we were left alone again, my mind felt like static, waiting to come up with something to say. He must have felt the same way; he absentmindedly picked at the skin around his thumbnail as he stared out the window.
"So, any plans?" he asked, straightening his posture to face me again.
"I'm not sure what you mean."
"You know, after the promo tour and when we're done with all this bullshit." Pedro nodded toward the paparazzi still stationed across the street.
I thought for a moment while I sipped from my lemonade. In reality, I had no plans. I wanted to audition for bigger movies, and maybe do some more modeling, but no opportunities came up. "I've got some things lined up, but I'm not totally sure yet. What about you?"
"Same."
Our food arrived soon after. We ate in silence. Despite his earlier comments, he refrained from teasing me about my salad, which I greatly appreciated. By the time he finished his sandwich and was sipping on his second beer, the lunch rush had picked up and brought more people into the restaurant. I my best tried to ignore the heavy feeling of their eyes on us as I finished eating. Pedro must not have noticed, or not cared, because he was staring at me intently, eyebrows furrowed, lost in thought.
I was still chewing my last bite when the waiter returned to clear Pedro's plate, and when he asked how we'd like the bill, Pedro simply said, "I'll take care of it."
"You know I could have paid for myself," I whispered once we were alone again.
"I know. Wouldn't have made me look like much of a gentleman, though." He shrugged smugly.
Once Pedro settled the bill, he stood and held out a helping hand for me to stand as well. To my surprise, he kept his hand in mine the entire walk out of the restaurant and to his car. If people were looking at us before, they were definitely staring now. I could practically hear the camera shutters clicking from the paparazzi's post, and I desperately hoped I hadn't spilled anything on my top.
Pedro dropped my hand to open the passenger door of his car for me, and I quickly ducked my head to get in. Finally out of view of cameras, I let out a deep breath and ran my fingers through the ends of my hair. Pedro got in the driver's seat a moment later. He turned the key in the ignition, then turned to me.
"Where should I drop you off?"
I don't know why the question threw me off. It just felt so cold after all of the attention he had given me for the past hour. It's so hard justifying 'acting' when we are supposed to be ourselves when we are out like this.
"Just my place, I guess."
I realized for the first time that today was the first time we were well and truly alone- no makeup artist, manager, director, or friend within arm's length to guide us. I felt guilty admitting that I actually enjoyed my time. I wondered if he thought the same. He was always so elusive, especially now as he drove, his gaze focused in front of him, left hand loosely gripping the top of the steering wheel and right hand lazily resting on the gear shift between us.
I fleetingly wondered who taught him how to drive stick. Was it in his mom's beat-up minivan when he was first practicing to get his license? Or did he wait until he could afford this new Aston Martin, showing it off to all of his friends?
I knew nothing about cars, but sitting in the front seat as we raced through the streets of LA made me feel like luxury. He definitely belonged in the driver's seat, too. Only someone so effortlessly suave and charismatic could zip around other cars as he does.
Soon enough, Pedro parked on the curb in front of my apartment. I collected myself and reached for the door handle before looking back at him.
"Thanks for the ride," I said.
"Sure. See you soon."

you were a house on fire || h.s. {pt 7}
harry styles x oc word count: 3.5k chapter summary: harry and roe work closer to deciding how the kids figure into things series masterlist
Tumblr media
As March crept along, Roe and Harry found themselves falling into each other's beds more often than not. Upon Roe's request, it was always at odd hours of the night or random moments in the day when the kids were at school. Not that this bothered Harry; he learned through his years in One Direction that exposure and exploitation really don't differ much. So, they let their secret moments be secret. Well, secret to the public and everyone in Harry's life, at least. Lucas knew of their situation, and therefore Aaron knew. Roe hadn't actually told anyone she was casually fucking one of the world's hottest pop stars- even Sara didn't know.
Lucas, despite Roe's indignation, could read every flick of emotion on her face. She didn't need to say anything- he drew the necessary conclusions from the few times he saw them together. She would divulge her brothers and best friend eventually. At least, she considered it. In terms of the kids, there was no doubt in her mind on how to handle the situation.
"There's no way they can find out we're seeing each other, " Roe declared. The topic had only been brought up by Harry because his clock barely read six o'clock on a Monday morning and she was fully dressed in her jeans and one of Harry's white long sleeve shirts- ready to leave for the unforeseen future. Harry, on the other hand, still bare from the night before was only covered by a thin silk sheet. Even his signature rings lay abandoned in the glass dish on his bedside table.
"I'm not saying we sit down and blab to the whole city, just tell your siblings that we're friends so we can see each other at normal hours."
"Plenty of people are up at this time." she rolled her eyes
"Fine, go be Supermom, leave me in the dust." Harry dramatically fell back onto the bed, allowing the sheet to pool at his bare waist. When Roe looked at him, a smile graced his features, and she knew he was only teasing.
"Hm, " she stepped up to the bed and straddled his waist. Harry instinctively grabbed her hips.
"Well, everyone knows that every superhero needs a dime piece waiting for them at home." They both let out breathy chuckles as Roe leaned down to connect their lips. Roe pushed into Harry as he tightened his grasp on her hips, but ended the kiss as soon as he attempted to deepen it.
"Seriously though, I don't want them to know. I know you don't spend a lot of time with middle schoolers, but they're fucking scary. Obsessive. Spread rumors like crazy. You tell one kid something, they blab to anyone they know. I don't think that's something you want. At least, that's what we agreed on when we started this."
"I'll tell you what I do want, " he smirked. Roe shook her head, laughing at him.
"Oh yeah?" she asked.
"Mhm," he drawled.
She kissed him again. "I wonder what you'll do about that. I have to get to work."
The next few hours of her day passed exactly as Roe expected. She opened the diner with Gretta and welcomed their regular customers with fresh cups of coffee and pancake and egg dishes. She fell into the flow of the workday and nearly forgot about her conversation with Harry that morning.
Days like these only allowed her appreciation to grow for such simple interactions. Sure, customer service always came with a stipend. A grown man would throw a fit because his fries aren't crispy enough, a parent would let their kids run circles around them without consequence. The positive moments, however, outshone the negative. At precisely ten o'clock, Ron strolled in every morning with a tip of his flat cap to the waitresses. He ordered a black coffee while he read war novels. Though he sat by himself at the front counter, he never failed to share a joke with whichever family sat close by. There was also Tina who brought her mother, Jane, once a week. Jane reached the point in her life where she asked every waitress if they were new there, no matter how long it had been. Nonetheless, she told each of them they were 'too pretty to be working this hard at a place like this' and gave generous tips. And of course, the students that bustled in after the final bell to work on projects, eat all of the diner's onion rings, and awkwardly flirt with each other. Roe looked forward to all of these interactions.
Sophie, she would admit, outshone her other regulars. Every couple of days, she came in during the mid-afternoon, sporting hot pink denim shorts and a Dora backpack. Roe asked her about her home life on a few occasions, but she shrugged her off telling her it was fine. And that was that. Sometimes, Roe helped her with her long division homework or helped her pick out her next independent reading book. She missed when the twins were that young, but knew it was only a matter of time before River got to be that big. Time melted through her hands. All she could do was hold on tight and hope some droplets remained.
By the time her lunch break rolled around that Monday, both Lucas, Aaron, and River joined her at the diner. The four of them sat in a booth in the back corner with a large plate of fries between them. Because of their heavy work schedules, they took advantage of the moments they were able to spend with each other. They tried at least. River, God bless him, was the most happy-go-lucky kid Roe ever met. It didn't matter where they were; as long as one of his siblings remained close to him and he had a toy car in hand, he was pleased. Roe celebrated this, as many kids his age had meltdowns, though she knew his speech and potty training paled in comparison. Given their circumstances, she chose to stay optimistic.
Today, River stood in the booth beside Roe, a french fry grasped tightly in one hand with a Disney princess coloring book in front of him. Lucas just finished a story of how a drunk guy tried to sleep in the warehouse he worked at recently. Though Roe was sure many details were embellished, it had the three of them in fits.
"So, I'm basically sitting on the guy, the police are on the phone, and after everything, he just vomits everywhere."
"Dude, we're eating-" Aaron tried to interrupt, his laugh dropping immediately.
"Anyway, so, I jump off of him and hit my back on a shelf so hard that I got this huge fucking bruise." He gestured to his side.
"File for worker's comp," Roe shrugged one shoulder with a smirk. She picked up a blue crayon and joined River on his Cinderella picture.
"I know you're half-joking, but I thought about it. That security job does not pay what I deserve, honestly." He shook his head and ate another fry. The three of them nodded, collectively watching River scratch a green crayon through Cinderella's dress.
"Speaking of injuries; Aaron, what's that little," Roe pointed at a deep purple mark near his collarbone with her crayon.
He rolled his eyes and shoved her hand away, "Yeah, yeah."
"Looks pretty bad, you want me to help you ice it later? Where the heck did you get it from, anyway?" Roe feigned innocence. Aaron gave her a middle finger as his only defense.
"You're one to talk, Rosalie. You've been sneaking off with this singer guy for like a month now like you're a double agent or something." Lucas said, his tone much heavier than Roe and Aaron's.
"A double agent? Really? Since when do I have to explain my sex life to you, anyway."
"Since you fuck off to his place half the week and leave us to take care of the kids on our own. You know Sara came looking for you this morning. Said she really needed to talk to you. And where were you?"
"Jesus, sorry, I didn't realize it was such a big deal. I only ever leave on the nights that you guys are already in charge, though, so, I thought it was fine, " she trailed off. "Can you stop bein' a jackass to me, and just go back to having lunch?"
Roe leaned back in the booth with her arms crossed. Aaron cleared his throat, and he and Roe shared eye contact for a moment, but no one spoke. River, oblivious to the table's sudden shift in mood, clumsily picked up his coloring book to show Roe the finished product. His pride in the messy scribbles brought her a smile despite the tense air around them still.
"Yeah, whatever. I gotta get back to work." Lucas picked up his denim jacket, kissed River on the forehead, and promptly left.
"Was that weird to you?" Roe turned to Aaron once Lucas finally left her line of sight. "Yeah, no, that was definitely weird."
They finished the plate of fries soon after and used the time to catch up on each other's lives. Aaron eventually divulged (with some pressure) that he started seeing a guy from work named Jalen. They had only been on a few dates, but he was hopeful it would go further. Roe teased him for being a secret lovebird despite encouraging him to pursue whatever made him happy. Someone in this family deserved it.
///
The next morning, the creak of Roe's bedroom door startled Harry awake. Lucas peered through the crack and frowned at the sight of them. Harry cautiously tugged the sheet closer to his chest and ran his fingers through a knot at the end of his hair, but it failed to change Lucas' disapproving glare.
"Is she asleep?" he pointed at Roe. Harry carefully shifted to his right to catch a glimpse of her face.
"Yeah. Do you want me to wake her?"
"No, it's fine. Just tell her I forgot I picked up an early shift this morning, so she's got the school run." Harry nodded, itching to pull a shirt on. "And by the way, Demi and River just woke up, so if you're looking to stay a secret much longer, I'd be careful."
He wasn't sure how threatening Lucas intended to be, but he muttered "thanks" anyway, just to be safe. The thought of sneaking out before Roe awoke crossed his mind, admittedly, for more than a few seconds. Ultimately, he decided against it. Maybe it was because he would feel guilty for leaving without relaying Lucas' message. Or, he simply hated the thought of leaving a warm bed. Roe stirred only moments after Lucas shut the door, and Harry placed a kiss on her bare shoulder, encouraging a smile to form on her half-asleep lips. He wrote it off as nothing more than a sleep-addled consequence.
"Good morning, love."
"Morning," She grumbled as she rubbed the crusted sleep from her eyes.
"Your brother came in a second ago. He wanted you to know that we have to take care of the kids this morning."
"We do?" she yawned.
Harry cleared his throat, "Yeah, he has to work early."
"So, you, " she paused- sitting up, she squinted and smiled at him, "and I, together, taking the kids to school?"
"No, that'd be silly, obviously. That is if you are still set on not letting them know. Which, at this point, don't they all already know?"
"The twins don't. Remember our conversation about preteens and rumors?"
Harry waited to respond upon hearing a door in the hallway swing open. Light footsteps trod past Roe's door and down the stairs before he continued, "At this point, don't you think it would be worth it to just talk to them? If we just ask them to keep us a secret-"
"They're my kids, and I'm telling you, it's not a good idea." Roe stood from the bed and wrapped a bathrobe around her bare body, avoiding eye contact with the man still beneath her sheets.
Harry rightfully declared himself a morning person on many occasions, but he suddenly questioned his mind's ability to follow the progression of the tone of the conversation. He understood why Roe often stood on the early defense. If anything, it's what he related to the most with her. He often needed to be cautious with strangers, a fair amount of time passed since he'd been with someone he didn't trust wholeheartedly. He understood Roe's defensiveness. Yet, his mind spun in conspiracies. It frustrated him. He hoped it wasn't obvious. He knew it likely was.
"Roe, I didn't mean to start an argument. I just think it will be easier for both of us this way." Roe pulled her hair into a ponytail, remembrances of bangs falling back to her forehead. Harry left the bed and joined her in front of her dresser where she stared straight ahead into the mirror. Leaning against the edge of the dresser, he reached for her arm and gently grasped her wrist.
"Will you at least think about it?"
"Yes, I'll think about it," she sighed and placed her other hand on top of their adjoined ones, but still avoided looking in his eyes. "In the meantime, we have to figure out how to sneak you out. Or, it might be easier for you to hide away in here while I take care of the kids? I can come back up here after I drop them at school."
Harry leaned forward and kissed her simply. "I'd like that," he said.
Harry expected her to shake off their moment of intimacy and immediately finish getting ready, but she remained planted in his warmth for a few more breaths before finally swaying away. Harry returned to his spot on her bed and watched in silence as Roe went through her morning routine. Not only had it been some time since he had been with somebody he trusted, but it had been some time since that somebody was a woman. He wouldn't categorize Roe as extremely feminine. Watching her apply dots of concealer to blemishes on her chin and a thin coat of mascara before pulling up the tiniest pair of underwear and athletic shorts he had ever seen, though, definitely contrasted the mornings he had grown used to in the years prior. Despite the differences in these scenarios, one thing about his partners remained; they prioritized staying a secret.
"I won't be long." Roe slipped an oversized Cubs sweatshirt over her head despite wearing nothing underneath. "Try not to be too bored without me."
Harry smirked at her, and just like that, she left. Though he could hear the commotion of the kids in the kitchen below him, his solitude pressed in on him. Silverware clinked against dishes, chairs scraped against the floor, eventually, the scent of coffee wafted up to him, and still, Harry sat- stolid. It's not as if he minded, though. Roe's pale yellow walls recently began to feel familiar to him. They often met at Harry's apartment, which he accepted the reasoning for, but he secretly enjoyed their nights at Roe's. Every time without fail, she would apologize for the display of toys across the floor of every room or stacks of dishes by the sink. She would grunt, cheeks pink, at the seemingly self-growing pile of laundry at the end of the hallway. Harry found it charming. Sure it was messy at times (all of the time), but the house breathed so much life. The Byrne household was like lightning. He loved his cat dearly, but the two of them in his apartment made for a static home. Envy bubbled inside of him, for he knew hers was a life he could never have.
On the bedside table to his left, a picture of two young boys caught his eye. Gently, Harry picked up the frame of what he assumed were a young Lucas and the second oldest brother sitting on Santa's lap. Both boys, likely toddlers at the time, had their mouths open in dramatic sobs. Clearly, a family joke they were yet to live down. Beside the frame rested a tattered copy of Of Mice and Men with a post-it note sticking haphazardly out of the middle of its pages. He remembered having to read it in school, and though the details escaped him years ago, it brought a wave of melancholy over him. His heart twitched snooping like this- they rarely spent more than an hour at a time together anymore, this behavior clearly crossed a line. Yet, his hands continued their search. The sudden quiet air only encouraged him.
Before he could admonish himself fully, he pulled open the drawer to the bedside table. He immediately recognized the green pipe they shared the week prior. A string of condoms, a broken pencil, two loose batteries. None of these items stood out as particularly incriminating- not that he expected such to be the case. In the very back, however, a new lighter laid on top of what looked like hospital bills. Harry paused and tossed a glance over his shoulder, though the door remained shut and the quiet, uninterrupted. With a furrowed brow, he drew closer to the papers. Though they were folded several times over, he caught sentence fragments containing words such as 'overnight care' and 'late fees' accompanied by a number several digits too long. As much as he loved living in the States, he never envied their sheer lack of health care. He pulled the paper from its resting place in order to investigate further, arguing it was purely out of concern for his- for Roe. Few details of the reason for the bill had been stated. What Harry found most odd, though, was that the bill was not for Roe at all. Rather, the address line read 'Mrs. Margaret Byrne' above the number for the house he currently sat in. Unless Roe had some major explaining to do, this bill was for another woman entirely. Her twin sister perhaps? No, the names didn't match.
The sound of the front door slamming halted his inquiry from spinning any further. As nimbly as possible, Harry slipped the paper back to its place and closed the drawer. Seconds later, the bedroom door swung open revealing Roe just as she left, now with a dusting of snow in her hair and on her sneakers.
"Sorry, I hope you weren't too bored," she said.
"It's fine, I don't mind. It's not like I had much planned for the day."
Roe laid back on the unmade bed and closed her eyes with a hum. "You sure? You're always hanging out with me, working around my schedule. I would feel bad if you're canceling on friends."
"Honestly, I don't have many people I talk to that regularly anymore, besides my mum or Niall," he laughed before realizing how hopelessly embarrassing that statement sounded.
"Well, none of them live here, at least."
"Really? Big shot like you?" Her tone lacked any drop of menace. It's this, Harry supposed, that encouraged him to continue.
"If I'm being quite honest, I lost a lot of friends when the band split. You don't realize how many people you only get along with because you're forced to spend time together. Without it," he trailed off in thought. "Without it, there's no real connection, you know? There were also," he hesitated, debating if going down this conversation path was really a good idea, "some people who decided to stop talking to me on purpose. That was before the breakup- hiatus, whatever."
Harry knew his ambiguity made his confession less sincere. But, regardless of the pull he always felt around her to be authentic, the trained side of his brain won- things had to be this way because vulnerability meant weak spots. And that was bad for business. Roe leaned up on her elbows, allowing herself to enter his space. "Is that what led to the breakup?"
"Kind of. Not really. It's a lot more complicated than that. Around that same time, I- well, I was going through a breakup of my own." Roe saw by the downward tilt of his lips and crease in his brow that the wound was not fully healed. "I'm sorry."
"It doesn't matter, I'm here to move on, anyway. Not here, like in your house, but in this city. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to drag us into a therapy session."
"Well, I'm no therapist, but we have the house to ourselves for at least a couple hours. I think I know of a few ways to lift your spirits," she drawled.
Harry sent her a teasing smile as she sat up to pull off her oversized sweatshirt. Harry didn't bother redressing after Roe left, giving her easy access to lean over him and kiss down the tattoos littering his chest. She took her time, letting each kiss linger before she traced a finger down his sternum. With each inch drawing closer and closer to where he craved her most, his breath quickened and a whimper escaped through his parted lips. God, he was done for.

series masterlist
Tumblr media
For two months, I did absolutely nothing. I slept in late, laid in bed on my phone for way too long, smoked way too much weed, and watched a godawful amount of TV. I relished every second of it. Today marks the beginning of 'August Sun''s press tour, with an internal meeting with my PR team to kick it off. It's nothing I haven't done before, but with a movie this big; I'm sure something new will pop up, and I really hope it won't catch me off guard. There's nothing that I hate more than being unprepared.
So, my confusion quickly turned to disdain when I saw Pedro enter the front of the office building a few paces in front of me. I hadn't seen him since the night of his party- I hightailed it out as soon as I woke up the next morning, severely embarrassed by my drunk behavior and even more so by his drunk rejection.
I knew I'd have to be around him again, I just wish I had time to prepare for that day being today. He didn't notice me outside of the building, so I took advantage of being early by stopping just shy of the door to fix my hair in the reflection of the glass and draw in a few deep breaths. With my composure slightly more in tact, I entered and headed toward the meeting room.
Though I was early, I was the last to join. I hoped my cheeks weren't as flushed as I felt. They sat circled around a long table in the center of the room, each of their eyes shooting towards me at the sudden intrusion and I actively avoided acknowledging Pedro's presence entirely.
"Hi everyone, good to see you guys," I said as I took my place in the empty seat closest to the door.
Gene, my PR manager straightened up the papers in front of him then cleared his throat. "Hey, Devon, we were just about to get started."
For the first hour, they gave us the basic run down of how the next few months will go. We start the press tour in New York in a few days, where we'll stay for about two weeks before coming back to LA for another two weeks. They listed the people that would interview us, what we would be wearing, and how we should talk about to movie to best promote it.
I honestly spaced out for a while. It's not that I don't like my managers because I do; really, the PR side of being an actress always disheartened me, but there's never a way to avoid it without good reason. I know my managers are doing things with my best interest in mind. At least, I hope they are.
"Alright, so. I'm sure you both understand what to do in terms of advertising the movie and such," one of Pedro's managers said apprehensively, "We decided to also go a common route for this movie." She sent a pointed look to me and Pedro, her hands folded atop the papers in front of her. "To really sell your characters' romance, Pedro, Devon- you'll be in a relationship for the next few months."
Pedro sniggered. Awkward silence filled the room.
I felt like one of them were bound to break their hard facial expressions any second and laugh at us, like this was some sick prank. Do people even fake date in Hollywood anymore? Surely not.
"You're being serious?" Pedro asked.
"Well, none of us will confirm or deny the relationship to media, but you two will definitely need to tease audiences about a romance between you. Come on, you know this shit works. It always gets front page coverage."
Pedro hummed sarcastically, "So, what, we'll just hold hands and flirt every time we're in front of a camera?"
"Basically," Gene deadpanned, pushing his thick framed glasses up his nose. "We may ask you to do other things as well, but that's the gist of it."
"Speaking of, we will need you two to go to lunch together before the press tour in New York to stir up conversation. We've already gone over your schedules before you arrived, so it'll happen this Friday," Pedro's manager said.
"Cheyanne, can I talk to you outside for a quick second?" Pedro pointed to the door and stands before she even responded.
Once they left the room, the shock wore off, and I finally processed what they were telling us. I leaned back in my chair, crossing my arms with a dramatic sigh.
"Devon, any input? Or are you just going to whine and stomp your foot like a child?" one of the other PR managers said.
I tried not to snap at him, even though they felt they could speak to me that way when I couldn't even remember his name. He leaned forward to rest his elbows on the table and raised a bushy brow, impatiently waiting for my response. I sat up again to match his posture.
"Will my input make a difference?" I said evenly.
"Maybe not directly, but we take your feelings into consideration."
"I don't know if you've met both of us, but we don't exactly scream 'in love'."
"So, you're doubting the believability of your characters, then?"
"No. Those are characters. We acted."
"Act again. Just until the movie leaves box offices."
He gathered his things together and organized them in front of him, signaling the end of our conversation. I chewed the skin on my lips to keep quiet. Pedro and Cheyanne returned, disrupting the increasingly tense energy in the room. The nameless PR manager continued explaining the order of scheduled events in Pedro and I'd relationship, but I stared out into the table, spacing out again. I traced the wood grain with my eyes left and right as far as it would go, matching the motion with slow breaths.
As soon as the meeting finished, I promptly dashed out of the room. I only made it to the elevators before I noticed Pedro hot on my heels. When he caught up to me, he didn't say anything at first; we stared at the closed elevator doors in silence. I could see his hand fidgeting out of the corner of my eye- a trait he only displayed when he would mess up his lines or not hit the right marks on time. The elevator finally reached our floor and welcomed the two of us before the doors could fully open.
It was only once they slid shut that he turned to face me, "Look, I know we didn't ask for this, but they're right. It'll promote the movie well and sell a lot of tickets. Isn't that what you want?"
I huffed. He shrugged his shoulders and let his hands slap against his thighs.
"This won't suck as much if you're not a brat about it," he spat.
I darted my eyes up to him and felt the fire inside me flare. The elevator landed on the ground floor, and without looking back, I said, "See you later, jackass."

a/n: no significant warnings but things get hot and heavy if you catch my drift
Tumblr media
We finished filming the final scenes for 'August Sun' around five hours ago. As soon as Sean shouted the final cut, tension rolled off my back, and I almost laughed with joy. It's not that I have been miserable the last few months because I haven't. It's just that the thought of never having to work under his critical eye again filled me with great relief.
I know that being the lead in 'August Sun' required a more solemn performance in comparison to my previous work, but have I not proved my talent already? It felt like every take was another audition in which I had to fight for my dignity. Sure, most of my acting experience has been from shooting commercials, but I have been working my way up in recent years; my nomination for best supporting actress in a kid's movie from two years ago sits heavy in my mind. At least my name was out there.
Still, it felt like no one trusted me to be alone on set or make a decision about my character for myself. So, when we finally wrapped, I seriously debated going straight home and drinking enough wine to wash out the grubby feeling in my gut. It became a bit more complicated when Pedro invited everyone to his house for a wrap party. I still could have avoided going, except he asked me personally to be there. It would have been easier if he simply shouted the announcement to the room, but he didn't. Instead, he told me how much he looked forward to seeing me there.
I was, unfortunately, alone outside of my trailer when he told me this, so I couldn't deflect or lean on Allison to avoid him. Like the few times we spoke before, he was kind, but I could see the apprehension through his whole body and his voice. I agreed to come only because I had no excuse otherwise. When I told him, he smiled shyly at the ground before schooling his expression and simply telling me, "see you 'round, Dev".
The way he spoke my nickname so casually irked me for the rest of the day. Who did he think he was? He barely knew me. I'm sure he knew this and only said it to get to me.
An hour into the party, even two Jack and Cokes couldn't help settle my agitation. When I first arrived, I tried my best to make peaceful small talk with the other actors and crew members there, but I felt like I was acting as much as I had been on set the past several months. Allison was there, but she was having fun with the other people from the hair and makeup department, and I didn't want to intrude. Eventually, I gave up, retreating to the other end of the house where I found a cozy library.
The slightly ajar door enticed me as if it were waiting for me to stumble upon it. A single lamp in the far corner illuminated the shelves of books and various trophies lining each wall. The multiple rugs layered on top of one another worked well to absorb the sound of the party, and without further thought, I dropped into the corner of one of the plush leather couches in the center of the room.
I drained the last of my third drink with a content sigh. I closed my eyes for a few moments, rolling out the tension in my neck before pulling my phone out of the pocket of my fur jacket. I had only been scrolling through Instagram for a few minutes when I suddenly heard the party's very own host behind me.
"Finally decide you're too good for us?" He asked smugly. He held two bottles of wine in each hand where he stood, leaning against the doorway.
I rolled my eyes and focused back on my phone. I expected him to blow me off and leave me alone like he usually does; instead, he admitted, "You know when we first met, I thought you were going to be much more lively. Social."
"Did you follow me over here just to say that?"
Pedro smirked and held up the wine. "Wine storage is next door. You sure you didn't come to the library in hopes of catching me alone?"
"God, get over yourself," I muttered softly.
"But seriously- you're not having fun? You know, when I was your age, I was throwing parties in my small-as-shit, shoebox apartment every chance I got," Pedro laughed at the memory as he finally sauntered into the room. He perched on the armrest of the couch opposite me, bottles still clutched in his hands but resting comfortably on his thighs.
"'When I was your age,'" I mocked. "Come on, you're not that much older than me."
"I've got a good ten years on you, at least." He shrugged.
Unsure of how to respond, I stared down into my glass as I swirled it, pretending there was something actually in it.
"Alright, take off that ridiculous jacket and join the rest of us again. I'll get you a refill of whatever you've been drinking, I can pretend you are a gracious guest, and you can pretend that you actually like any of us." Pedro stood and began taking small steps backward until he was almost in the hallway. "Who knows, maybe you might just enjoy your time."
I wanted to deny him or at least make a witty remark, but my words failed me. I kept my jacket on, though. I followed Pedro back to the crowded kitchen and pushed my empty glass on the counter in front of him as soon as we arrived. He side-eyed me but filled it up with red wine without hesitation. I lifted the glass to him, giving him a 'cheers' before taking several large gulps. He shook his head with a smug smile.
A few drinks later and I had lost track of time. I hated to admit that Pedro could be right, but I was laughing more and more as the night wore on. Like always, though, I found Allison to cling to when being social felt too difficult. We sat on the couch and gossiped until I couldn't feel my cheeks from laughing. I'm sure anyone around us thought we were hysterical. I eventually excused myself to the kitchen to procure a shot for each of us, but when I reentered the living room, Allison was headed toward me, purse and keys in hand.
"Sorry babe, I'm about to head out, it's been a long day." She brushed some loose hair behind my ear, smoothing it down with a few more strokes. "I'm so glad you came! We need to go out more often- let your freak flag fly!" With a kiss on my cheek, she all but disappeared before my eyes.
My shoulders dropped. I downed one of the shots and set the other on the coffee table beside me. Looking around for the first time in a while, I understood why Allison left. We were pretty much the only people left. Daisy, the actress that played my sister, was curled up on a chaise lounge, fast asleep. Music still pumped through the speakers, but I decided my time to leave had long since passed.
I clumsily twirled around in search of my phone and purse when I noticed the music lowering to a soft hum.
"Thought you'd have left by now," Pedro said, turning away from the stereo system on the other side of the room.
I found my purse half under the couch and picked it up, showing it to him, "going to now."
"You were able to get an Uber this late?"
"I don't live far, I'll be fine to drive." I shook my head but quickly stilled, trying to quell the dizziness it brought on.
"Honey, if you've had anywhere near what I've had to drink tonight, and I think you have, you're in no shape to drive," he said condescendingly.
"Don't act like you know me. I'm fine."
I tried walking to the door, but Pedro gently pushed on my shoulder, and by the time I processed it, I was back on the couch. I groaned. Pedro laughed.
"Like I said," he landed heavily onto the cushion beside me, "you're not going anywhere. So, kick off your shoes, unbutton your pants, whatever, just get comfortable. Because I will take your keys."
I could be arrogant sometimes, I knew that. I guess this was one of those moments to give in. Let someone else be right.
So I reached down to unzip my boots and pulled them off, chucking them to the floor beside the couch. I felt Pedro's gaze on me and my already flushed cheeks grew hotter. I lost my jacket at some point in the night, so I unbuttoned my pants next, just as he suggested. I maintained eye contact as I did so, watching his eyes darken and his demeanor transform to something more focused. I had only seen a similar look from him when we were in front of a camera, and even then, it was much more practiced and controlled than the man in front of me now.
Though my ego felt satiated, I hungered for more. So, I drew the zipper down slowly, with baited breath. Pedro's eyes danced around my body, but continually rested on the open closure of my pants. Just to see how far I could take it, I moved my hands up and behind my back in search of my bra clasp. I quickly unhooked it and pulled the straps from my shoulders, letting it fall out the bottom of my tank top. When Pedro's breath stopped for a full second, I knew I had him like putty in my hands.
"Comfortable, now?" he asked with a steady, deep voice, leaning closer to me.
I nodded, and before I could fully part my lips to speak, he was kissing me- and Jesus he held back during filming. His tongue prodded mine hungrily, and I felt his hands snake around my waist, grabbing me there just as fiercely. With one particularly rough tug, I swung my left leg over and landed in his lap, tangling my fingers is his hair to help myself balance. We rutted together intensely, his fingers splayed out, digging into the flesh of my hips.
I instinctually let my hands wander down Pedro's chest, my lips twitching to a smirk when I realized his half unbuttoned silk shirt had fallen off one shoulder. As I broke our kiss and reconnected my lips on the nape of his neck, a small whimper escaped him- so quiet, I almost missed it. My hands continued their path lower until they reached the top of his pants, quickly unbuttoning them. His grip finally left my hips, one grabbing my hands, the other holding my back as he maneuvered me to lay on my back with him hovering above me and pinning my hands above my head.
"Devon," he tutted, shaking his head, "who knew you could be such a bad girl."
"Isn't that what you like?" I rolled my hips up into his.
I could see the thoughts rolling behind his eyes, debating what to do with me. He leaned closer, and I could feel his breath on my chin, but he backed away again and, instead, dragged his eyes over my entire body then back up. Making eye contact again, he released my hands and sank back into the opposite side of the couch. I remained in my lounged position and tried to catch my breath.
"Get some sleep. There's a guest room down the hall." Pedro nodded to his left, still maintaining eye contact, "Don't puke on anything."
Without another word, he left me in the living room, music still purring through the speakers and Daisy still passed out across the room. Simply, what the fuck was that.

"So if I remember to carry the one, it's four hundred-sixty-five?" Demi mumbled, her chin perched on top of her hand as she slouched over the table. A few curly bangs fell in front of her face, dusting her cheekbones. She needed a haircut soon, Roe decided.
"I think you're close?"
Roe leaned closer towards Demi's problem set to read her work, attempting to find the issue. Demi rolled her eyes, dropped her pencil on the kitchen table, and threw herself back in the creaky wooden chair. Neither of them excelled in math, making afternoons like these a throbbing pain in the ass; but Roe would sacrifice anything for the kids, even if it meant suffering through a migraine and an argument to get them to complete their homework. They may not appreciate it now, but Roe would see them to their graduation day- that's a promise.
"This is impossible."
"Don't say that," Roe berated.
The next hour ensued similarly to how it began, and neither of them saw much hope for improvement. It was only when Roe got distracted with the sound of her text tone going off that Demi fully exploded.
"You're not even being helpful! This sucks, I'm going to my room. Don't come after me."
Roe threw up her hands in defeat and allowed her sister to stomp up the stairs. Perhaps next time she'll recruit Aaron to help tutor math, he's sure to pass at the top of his class. When she finally heard a door slam, she unlocked her phone to read the offending notification.
"I'm sorry again about the other night."
Harry.
Roe rubbed her eyes until she saw flashes of color. It's not that she's angry about that night because she's not. She has always kept her expectations low, it's necessary, especially when dealing with men that clearly have some underlying issues they needed to deal with. But she's not a psychiatrist. Really, it was a matter of time before he said something of that manner; he stood out like a silver spoon in a case of rusty cutlery. She wasn't angry with him. She should have expected his arrogance, and therefore any negative feelings are inevitably her fault for not preparing herself more.
Roe pulled up the message thread between her and Harry and sent, "its fine".
"Are you sure?" his reply came immediately, followed by, "Can we talk?"
A few hours later, Roe opened the front door for Harry. She had just coaxed River to lay down without crying, and she had scarcely seen the twins since dinner. As the clock ticked nearer to eleven, Roe accepted her siblings' contentment in hiding away in their bedrooms. As per usual on Wednesday nights, the oldest two brothers were still at work
"Thanks for letting me come over," he said.
Roe nodded her head once and smiled, unable to think of an appropriate response. She knew his intentions were good-willed based on the minimal texts they exchanged, but the anxiety that came with knowing he would be seeing her house for the first time nearly caused her to refuse to see him altogether. She barely had time to clean anywhere before he arrived, and she couldn't help but obsess over the toys strewn about, the yellowing smoke-stained walls, and mismatched furniture- or lack thereof. It was ridiculous, she contended. She likely couldn't fix any of those things in a day, anyway. But compared to Harry's sleek apartment, the Byrnes were flat broke.
He followed her to the plaid couch and they sat, a pressing distance separating them as Roe's eyes trained on a stain on the cushion between them. It was only the size of a quarter, likely a drop of ketchup or baby food, but it stuck out against the loud print of the couch as if it were screaming to be attended to. Maybe she'll clean it tomorrow.
"I want you to know I'm not the kind of person who does stuff like this." he gestured between them, "I don't know, I guess I just kind of panicked when I said I'd pay you-"
"It's fine, really. We fucked, you were a dick. I can move on. I have moved on. I don't know how many times I have to say it, Harry," her voice softened, despite its unwavering tone.
"Okay, " he nodded, "we can move on, then." Roe followed his gaze to River's Hot Wheels scattered beside the other chair across the room, "I hope I'm not intruding on your night or anything."
"No, I put him to bed a little bit ago. And we already finished dinner and everything, so." She nodded.
"Sounds lovely," he cleared his throat and smiled. "Do anything else interesting today?"
He came all this way to clear the air when in reality, there was nothing more for him to say. He felt it would have been rude for him to get up and leave after only sitting on her couch for a mere three minutes- if anything it would have been a simple waste of both of their times. Knowing the kids were home gave him a slight quiver to his voice, knowing their conversation could be impeded. He pushed that thought down, carrying on the conversation as if she were any other girl and this was any regular night.
"I was just helping Demi- you remember my sister you met at the shop? with her homework when you texted earlier, but it went as well as you could have expected."
"I doubt it; you're smart, I bet you were better than her teacher." Casual flirting. Normal.
"I wouldn't put money on that, I didn't even finish high school."
"Really? Why not? I mean, you don't have to tell me. I get it. I didn't finish school either. Shit happens." Harry leaned back into the cushions of the couch and crossed his arms.
"You didn't finish?"
"No. I went straight into One Direction after I turned sixteen. Who needs a diploma when you've got stardom, right?" Roe mimicked his smile, but soon after, they were both met with a tight silence. So much for normal conversation, he supposed.
"River was born the summer before my senior year," Roe blurted, "and the twins were still in elementary school then, the boys not much older. Long story short, my parents are shitty, and my sister and I dropped out to pick up some of their slack."
"Demi?" He furrowed his brow and tilted his head back.
"No. I have a twin, too. Fae," she strained.
"Oh, does she live nearby? I don't think I've met her yet."
"No. She's not around much anymore."
The stillness returned, and it brought an itch down to Roe's bones. In a house with so many kids, she usually got on her knees and rejoiced when no one was yelling at each other, crying, or cranking the volume on a boombox. Tonight, however, she prayed for any sound other than her heartbeat ringing in her ears.
When she finally couldn't take it anymore, she stood abruptly from the couch and faced Harry, "Wanna smoke?" she asked.
Harry shrugged and nodded, standing to follow her. While she didn't exactly anticipate this happening, she luckily tidied up her bedroom this morning after River spilled his juice on her sheets. And by 'tidied up', she simply changed the sheets, shoved loose items of clothing into an empty dresser drawer, and relocated River's toys to the closet in the living room. The closet was stuffed to begin with, and she empathized with whoever is next to open it.
Together, they gently ascended the stairs towards the door at the end of the hall; a Rocky Horror Picture Show poster peeling off the center. Roe shut the door behind him and moved swiftly towards her dresser. Harry stood near the end of her full-sized bed picking at a scab on his right thumb, unsure of what to do with himself, while she jostled some unfolded shirts around until she found the jar she was looking for. She triumphantly raised it in the air before settling on the bed, eliciting a chuckle out of Harry for the first time that night. She grabbed a green pipe out of her nightstand and only spared a single glance at the man beside her before crumbling the dried bud into its bowl.
The first time Harry smoked was at his friend's birthday party. They barely passed the halfway mark of year eleven, and he still had high hopes of attending college to study something worthwhile, like environmental science. He didn't mean what he said to Roe earlier about graduating; he had thought about getting his diploma often, and he took his studies seriously. There were weekends, however, that he set his books aside and let himself fall into the stereotypes about kids his age. He never found out where they got it from, but Alex brought a few grams of weed and a bong to James' party, and, Jesus, it was a party to remember. Despite embarrassing himself by coughing immediately after inhaling the bud, his first kiss happened later that night.
He never intended on making this smoking thing a habit. In fact, he didn't smoke the entire time he was on XFactor or the first three years of the band. He hadn't been attached to the substance as Alex had (and definitely still was), but that doesn't mean he didn't crave its warmth and ability to slow every emotion. Perhaps he felt the need to prove something about 'teenage popstars'- something a few of his bandmates regarded lightly- or he simply wanted to avoid disappointing his mother. It didn't matter much. Either way, as the band began slipping into disarray, so did his conscience.
At that point, Harry stopped looking at his calendar to follow the days of the month or the week; enough people on the team and in management steered him to his next destination and never allowed him to wander too far. And there were simply too many days until their next break to be able to keep a countdown, so what was the point? Niall told him this was a depressing sentiment. He held it anyway.
So, that May (he was fairly certain they entered May by then), he finished recording his parts of the new album for the day and was sent to find Zayn for his recordings. He jabbed the call button for the hotel elevator and combed through his hair with his fingers as he waited impatiently. The closer he got to his and Louis' hotel room, the smell emanating from it confirmed that Zayn was there.
"Shut up, you wanker," Zayn laughed, Louis just shaking his head. The two of them sat perched on the windowsill, a few feet and an ashtray between them. Harry cleared his throat. "Oh, hey, Harry. Uh, what's up?"
Harry repeated their manager's message for Zayn, but he only nodded in response. Louis shot Zayn a look before taking a drag of the short blunt between his fingertips. Harry still stood in the middle of the hotel room, shifting his weight from his left foot to his right, then back to his left. So, this is how it would be.
"Well, you want a hit, or?" Zayn trailed off. Harry watched Louis comb through his fringe and wished he would just look at him.
"I'm good, thanks."
///
"Sorry, what was that?"
"I asked if you want the first hit," Roe laughed.
Harry shook the memory away and finally sat on the bed beside her. They took turns drawing the smoke into their lungs, holding for a few seconds, then releasing. He secretly held a theory that half of the anxiety-reducing properties of smoking was simply the practiced breathing. He tried to keep that in mind when craving anything more.
By the time Roe sat up to refill the bowl for another round, Harry realized he had slouched far down the wall and, oddly enough, neither of them had spoken since they first entered her room. Harry pushed himself higher. His back ached slightly, and though years of neglect were surely to blame, he suddenly held the single flat pillow behind him accountable. Roe seemed oblivious to this agitation.
"So, you have a lot of siblings," Harry said after Roe lit the fresh bowl. She didn't know whether he meant this as a question or a statement but nodded her head nonetheless.
"Oldest of six- seven if you count Fae. Most of us don't though. So, oldest of six."
"I just have one sister. She's older."
Roe hums a note of interest but doesn't prompt him any further so they fall back into quietness. If he weren't so high, Harry surely would be ticking with restlessness. Though he longed for the ease that accompanied close relationships, Roe was essentially still a stranger. Sure, they spent several hours together at Keystone or the diner, but Harry can't recall any substantial conversations. Anything he revealed about himself was surely a click away on Google, and half of the time, Roe shrouded herself in ambiguity or changed topics on the fly. Honestly, it scared him a little. He recognized that if this were to be any type of relationship that went somewhere, there would have to be some give and take. Vulnerability. That is if Roe actually wanted this to go anywhere. If not, Harry supposed he could feel content where they were.
A soft knock on Roe's bedroom door jolted Harry out of his haze. The door creaked open, but Roe seemed unconcerned as she took another hit- the bowl almost entirely ash by now. With the light in the hallway off and a single lamp to illuminate Roe's room, an odd shadow cast across the face of the man in the doorway. Still, Harry recognized him. He had been there at the diner to pick up the toddler that Roe came in with. Their connection bemused him, but he figured it wasn't his place to dig further.
"Why are you smoking that shit in here?" Lucas eyed Harry up and down but restrained himself from making any extra comments.
"Kids are asleep, window's open." She lazily pointed towards the hallway, then behind her towards the window.
"Next time consider the backyard?" He turned to close the door, "Or just trashing the habit altogether," he muttered.
///
A tiny elbow to the stomach jolted Roe from her sleep. As she blinked away the morning's blurriness, River giggled as he crawled around her with his stuffed pig tucked under his left arm. After a few moments, he settled down and sat on the tops of her stomach.
"Good morning, Jellybean. Did you sleep okay?"
"Yes! No scary pictures." He promptly put his thumb in his mouth.
"That's great! Can you go downstairs and wait for me? I'll get you juice and breakfast in a minute, okay?" Roe kissed his cheek and helped him slide back down onto the floor. Roe and Harry eyed each other shyly. She shook her head and he let out a laugh as they heard River's small feet pitter-patter through the still house. Roe covered her face with her hands and explained, "He's an early riser. The rest of the kids don't wake up for another hour."
Harry shifted onto his back but kept his smile present. He thought of his plans for the day and how they really amounted to nothing. At least, they were so simple compared to Roe's. She had a routine, people that relied on her. The only things on Harry's to-do list consisted of a load of laundry and perhaps going through his voicemails. They had truly stacked up the last few weeks.
"I don't mean to pry, but can I ask you something?" Roe nodded in encouragement, so he continued, "I saw you with him- River, that morning at the diner when he was sick. Just the way you were holding him, and, I don't know. Are you," his voice trailed off, "Is he-" He felt his cheeks darken, and sunk further into the mattress in attempts to conceal it. "You know, never mind, I-"
"He calls me mom sometimes," she laughed.
"Oh."
"If you're asking whether or not I carried him for nine months before pushing him out, that would be a no. But, if you're asking if I'm his mother," she paused and shrugged.
"I suppose I should get going then, especially before the others wake. You must have a busy day, " Harry said, "And, I'm not sure how much I want this," he lifted a hand to gesture between them, "to be public knowledge. Not that I don't trust your family, just- " he shrugged, attempting to find the right words to say so early in the morning.
"No, I get it. They can be nosy little bitches, " she crinkled her nose. "Plus, I just got out of a messy relationship, or maybe I'm still getting out of it, I don't even know, and it could be good to just be, " she let out a big sigh as she rubbed her shoulder, "casual?"
"Casual." Harry nodded.

Roe was ten years old the first time she stole. Granted, it was a set of watercolor paints and a single, ragged brush from her elementary school, but still, she saw herself as a first-time thief. Her class just finished their painting unit in their art class, and while everyone except Ethan, her best friend, had their attention elsewhere, she slipped the supplies into her backpack. That was two weeks after the twins were born. Lucas found her stolen goods, barely eight at the time, and tried convincing her to return them because everybody knows that people who steal go to jail, and he couldn't have his big sister go to jail.
Of course, Roe promised Lucas she was safe, and it was okay for her to keep her paints. That, however, didn't stop her from hiding them whenever Blue Uniforms searched through the house. They always came with loud shouts and left with one or both of her parents. No. Her paints were safe. There was a spot between her dresser and the wall where the case could sit without falling to the ground. You only saw it if you knew it was there.
Roe woke up that Tuesday with a picture of it in her mind, still behind the dresser, collecting dust. It had been there since she was fourteen, and the Blue Uniform left with her dad like they had many times before. But unlike those other times, he didn't come waltzing back through the front door weeks or months later with a smirk on his lips and shake of his bald head. She left the case there, told herself she would bring it out again when her father's boots clunked around their house. Day after day, her hope dwindled until she forgot of its existence entirely- until now.
With a lull in clients at Keystone and today as her day off at the diner, what harm could she do by pulling the old dried up pigments from their hiding place? River was her only company at home, but she put him down for a nap only moments ago. So, Roe set up her paper, watercolor, and brush, and water in a cracked plastic cup that read "Pirates Cove!" on the kitchen table in the sunlight of midday. It was all there- her supplies, time, quietness, ambition to create, yet she couldn't think of anything to paint. No subject. No muse. At least, not one she desired admitting to.
Roe slouched into her chair and crossed her arms over her chest. This was not how it was supposed to go. She wanted to paint a flower or some fruit. She wanted to be able to paint freely, without thoughts of a lingering lover plaguing her mind and ultimately restricting the feeling in her fingertips. It was as if she were actually there with her hands anchored around Roe's wrists.
Perhaps Roe was not meant to be an artist. She shook her head and blew a puff of air to send her bangs away from her eyes. She picked up her phone and dialed the only number she still knew by heart.
~~~
Harry's ringtone drew him from his warm afternoon nap. His body never knew which timezone to align itself with, and with no work for the unforeseen future, Harry found himself napping more than he did when he was a toddler. He wiped the crusted sleep out of the corners of his eyes and untangled his phone from the sheets near his left knee. "Niall Horan" lit up the screen in bold lettering under a picture of said man doing a handstand on top of one of their tour buses. Harry took that picture on their first tour and always admired it. By the time he was ready to answer the call, it was too late, sending Niall off.
Harry ran his hands over his face again. Certainly, Niall would have his ear for that one. Sure enough, seconds later, his phone rang again. "Hey," Harry answered, his voice heavy.
"Hey mate, you alright? You didn't answer, and you sound," he paused, "tired?"
"I'm fine. You woke me is all."
"Oh."
"Did you need something?" Harry loved talking with his best friend, but a much timider and hesitant voice had replaced the Irishman's typically quick and carefree one.
"No, no. Just checking in on you. Seeing how you're doing is all."
"I'm fine, Niall, really. Say what it is that you want to say, I know you have something," Harry huffed.
"I- all the boys, well really Liam and me, we want you to know that we're here for you and," he paused again. Harry thought he might've heard whispering on the other end, but perhaps he imagined it, "we know you're going through a tough time with everything- more than us for sure. Just- we're here if you want to talk."
Harry sighed as Niall continued his speech. Biding his time, he cast his gaze towards his window. A mourning dove landed on the fire escape and snatched a cockroach into his beak. The insect twisted its legs in an attempt to escape but soon gave up before the bird dove back down into the alley. Envy pinched his chest, but for which party, he did not know.
When Niall eventually stopped tripping over his words, Harry reassured him that he was fine and would call him in the case that he was not. They gave their goodbyes and hung up not long after. With no plans for the rest of the day, Harry allowed himself to fall back into slumber despite dinner hours approaching.
"I'm so glad you called, I needed this. And by the looks of it, you do too, babe," Sara shouted in Roe's ear over the thumping bass of a song she didn't recognize.
Roe tried her best to let everything go and allow the tequila to numb her throat. Secretly, she hoped it would numb everything above it as well, but so far the drink was failing on both fronts. She just went through the motions; take shots, dance, shout some song lyrics, repeat. These nights were rare, and they usually hit the reset button on her stress levels. It wasn't often she could let loose and not think about anything worrisome for a few hours.
But tonight, no matter what she did, she could only picture Ariel in the crowd next to her. Roe's heart twitched at every glimpse she caught of a brunette, and her chest burned because of it. She's not so sure she can blame it on the tequila.
Tequila, however, was to blame for her following actions. A simple 'hey' sat in the text box under Harry's contact for several moments, the blinking text cursor mocking her loneliness and indecision. She saved his number from work one night in case of emergency- whatever an emergency at an automobile shop would look like. She swore she wouldn't hit send, honestly, but a petite woman bumped into her shoulder and suddenly there's no way for it to be undone. She chewed her nails with a furrowed brow as the 'delivered' sign quickly turned into 'read' and three dots appeared underneath it before a reply came through.
'Who is this?' it read. Shit. This was a mistake.
'roe. sprry'
'Oh. Are you ok?' Roe looked up, sifting through her thoughts for a response.
A dancing couple caught her eye, distracting her from the task at hand. The woman nuzzled her nose in her partner's neck, swaying several beats too slowly for the song pumping through the speakers. The man didn't seem to mind, just swayed with her, arms resting naturally on her lower back. The rest of the dimly lit room meant nothing to them. The ceiling's strobe lights were shooting stars for all they cared.
Roe fleetingly wondered if she and Ariel ever looked like that. They never slow danced in the kitchen or stargazed together- "We're not a romcom, Roe," she would say. But, after long days of work and taking care of the kids, they laid atop each other on the scratchy living room couch, and Ariel hummed Something by The Beatles as she played with Roe's hair until they both drifted asleep.
Did it look like that? Natural?
The couple from before was now nowhere to be found and she worried about their mere existence at all. Rubbing a hand over her face, she responded to Harry, 'fine just drunk'. Before she could convince herself otherwise, she added, 'miss yu'.
This time, it took several minutes for a word back from Harry. Roe anxiously nursed a beer after deciding to take it easy on the tequila shots. The room spun, and she honestly needed to sit down, but she kept her eyes transfixed on her phone.
'Do you want to come over?'
With that, Roe made her way through the crowd towards Sara. It took a moment to locate her in the throng of bodies, but when she did, she made up an excuse of being tired and wanting to call it a night early. Sara understood because of course, she always does. Her kindness left Roe with a slight weightiness as she slipped her jean jacket on and stumbled to the train station a few blocks away.
Even in her state, Roe remembered the route to Harry's apartment. It wasn't a long journey from the bar, and soon enough, she knocked at his door. She barely had time to question her motives before it swung open to reveal Harry half-dressed. A pair of loose black sweatpants clung to his hips and a smug grin hung lazily from his lips. They spared but a moment as Roe stepped inside and dragged him closer by the drawstring of his pants, but despite their impatience, they first connected their lips leisurely.
"You taste like beer," he giggled.
"You," she traced her tongue down his neck and nipped at his collarbone, "smell like weed."
"Aren't we a pair?"
Roe kept her fingertips at his waistband, teasing gently as Harry guided them through the living room. Roe nearly pulled away, expecting to settle on the couch again, but Harry kept leading them down the hall. Every few steps, their footing fumbled, and they had to rely on the wall for stability. Harry's hand sank into her thigh at the bottom of her body-con skirt, and as the kiss grew heavier, the only thought running through Roe's mind was, take it off.
She would like to say they fell gracefully into the bed, but anyone in their right mind would know better. Roe's fingernails dug into the skin behind Harry's shoulder blade. She nearly apologized, but he let out a broken sigh and whispered, "again". Roe scratched again, this time dragging towards the sides of his ribs. They toyed like this for a few moments longer, reveling in each other's heat, rutting against each other. In the midst of this, her skirt had been pushed up to bunch around the thinner part of her waist, and Harry's sweatpants were nowhere to be found. Roe's jacket and tank top straps slipped from her shoulders, providing Harry the perfect opportunity to bite marks into her tanned skin. They rocked together, taking only what they needed from the other- perhaps an iota more. In the absence of speaking, their heavy breaths filled the room until Roe nearly felt the weight of it enclosing her every limb. By the time Harry's final moans subsided, Roe became hyperaware of the sweat beading on her forehead and the stickiness between her thighs. It made her nauseous.
They rolled away from each other slowly, disentangling limbs and the sheet that had become wedged between them. The bed had been slovenly before either of them fell into it; Roe could only imagine how badly the sheets needed to be washed now. She sighed and pushed herself from the bed, finding her clothes hurriedly. Harry stayed still and silent. Somehow after how close they had been only moments ago, they couldn't meet the gaze of the other. Roe wanted to ignore the panicked "shit" that fell from Harry's lips, but she couldn't. Weed paranoia would give a weak excuse for the tension in his face. Something was wrong.
"What is it?" A tall mirror rested against the wall beside Harry's dresser and Roe only took five seconds looking through it as she combed her bangs with her fingers to abandon it as a lost cause. She counted the lucky stars she hadn't worn makeup; if she had, there's no telling the kinds of looks she would get on the way home, and that's saying something. Here's to hoping the lame hour would allow her to stay somewhat anonymous. She gave herself one last once-over before casting her gaze to Harry, more than ready for his answer.
"Are you on the pill, by any chance?" he grimaced.
"Shit."
Roe allowed her face to fall into her hands for a moment. She quickly recovered, putting up a stone wall in her mind, and continued her mission of collecting her things. This time, her emotions were included.
"Where are you going?"
"Home," she replied sharper than she intended.
"I mean, all hope isn't lost, or whatever. I can give you money for a Plan-B or something. I very well can't go buy one, it'll end up in a magazine, and it'll probably be expensive for you." It sounded pretentious even before the sentence was fully formed. Even so, Roe merely shook her head and shoved her heels into her sneakers faster. "Fuck! I'm sorry, love, I didn't mean it like that."
"Doesn't matter if you meant it when we both know it's true."
"You could stay. We could figure something out?" It had been at least an hour since her last drink but she was still feeling the effects of it, and by the droop of his eyelids, Roe didn't trust Harry's sobriety either. The best thing for them was separating, Roe decided.
"Sorry. I just don't really do the whole morning thing. Plus, I've got to work tomorrow. Earn my own money."
"Ok," he clears his throat, "yeah, I get it. Sorry, again."
"It's fine," she demanded coolly.
Roe only looked back once as she left Harry's room. From their conversation, she half expected him to offer to walk her out. But, the telltale sound of a lighter clicking allowed her to take the final steps out the door with confidence. Her heart still beat quickly with adrenaline despite the quietness the Red Line provided her on her journey home. Winter showed no mercy, and by the time she stepped on the platform, her jean jacket barely provided any comfort. In some backward way, she was thankful for the sub-freezing temperatures. It kept her from overthinking the events of the night.
Roe unlocked her front door just shy of four in the morning. Despite her numb fingers and slight dizziness, she managed to go inside and kick off her sneakers without falling into a heap on the ground. Upon entering the living room, she noticed Lucas. He sat on the middle cushion of the couch, slouched so far down, she worried he would get a crick in his neck. A single lamp illuminated the left side of his face, but only just; they lost the original lampshade years ago and their mom replaced it with one from a thrift store that barely fit. So, the lamp now shone dimmer than ever, placed haphazardly on the floor in the far corner of the room (it was meant to be sitting on a table, but they never got around to buying one). All this to say, Roe could barely see Lucas, and yet, he looked worse than she felt.
"What are you doing up?" she asked.
"Could ask you the same thing. Aren't you supposed to be having a girl's night at Sarah's? You know you could've stayed over there, I've got the kids tomorrow."
"Yeah, no, I know"
"You look fucked up."
"Thanks." Roe smiled sarcastically.
"Did you ditch her?"
Roe busied herself by picking up the stray action figures littered on the ground near the stairs and shrugged; "Didn't feel like staying. Why does it matter?"
He shrugged and muttered, "Just kind of a shitty thing to do to a friend."
"Well, I guess it's a good thing that it's none of your business then."
Lucas threw up his hands in defense of her icy words, and watched her collect the remaining toys on the floor. When she finished, she dumped them in a bin next to the couch and finally retreated to her room. She debated peeling off all of her clothes and scrubbing the night off in a hot shower, but one glance at her bed convinced her otherwise. Without any further ceremony, Roe flicked off the lights and let herself fall into a dreamless sleep.
"Oh, fuck, " I moaned.
He pushed his body into mine, effectively moving me out of the steaming shower water. A strand of my hair stuck to my cheek for a brief moment before he brought it back behind my ear messily. They straightened it when I arrived this morning, but with every passing second in the steam, my curls started springing back up.
I tried my best to focus on the moment. I wanted to really sell the lust and desire our characters were supposed to feel in this moment, not worry about what facial expression I wore or what line came next.
"You feel so good, baby, " he breathed into my neck. "Doing so good for me." The hot air clung to all of my exposed skin, and a blush rose to my cheeks.
I hiked my leg up higher against his hip, like we had done the last few takes. It felt a little too practiced, and I hoped we didn't come across as so. I suppose he thought the same thing because suddenly, his large hands slid down and grasped both of my ass cheeks, straying from the script, and I gasped. His grunts increased with his thrusts. Even though I technically couldn't feel him, I knew my thighs would be sore tomorrow. A wave of pride came over me with that thought, but I pushed it down to refocus on the moment.
When the director, Sean, yelled cut, our hands dropped from each other immediately. He stayed in front of me long enough for one of the costume assistants to bring each of us a robe to cover up with before he turned away without a word.
Sean clapped once to gather everyone's attention, "That was great Pedro. Devon, I need a little more from you, alright? Where's the passion? Cassie is supposed to embody sexiness. Yeah?"
"Uh-huh. Got it." I tried masking my annoyance, but it seeped through regardless.
"Alright, let's just reset and go one more time," Sean called out as he twirled his pointer finger in the air.
My small hair and makeup team welcomed me at my station and set up my touch-ups. It wouldn't take long- my hair was meant to stay wet and messy throughout the scene and I hardly wore any makeup. Still, Allison, my favorite member of hair and makeup, ran a comb through the larger tangles that formed due to Pedro's large, wandering hands. When she finished, I noticed Pedro himself walking directly toward me.
"Was that alright?" Pedro asked without any preamble.
"What?"
"The end." He paused, rubbing his nose. "You know, that take was a little more intense than the other ones. Just making sure I didn't cross a line or something." He said as he tightened his robe, then crossed his arms against his chest.
I shrugged. "We're acting, it's what the characters would do."
"Great," he matched my languid tone but kept his tense posture.
I felt my robe slowly slip from my shoulder but didn't bother catching it. I could've sworn Pedro's gaze strayed to the bare skin there as if he wasn't swallowing my spit five minutes ago. Allison, still running her fingers through the tips of my damp hair, covered me up again.
Pedro connected eye contact once more and raised an eyebrow as if waiting for me to say something else. Or, perhaps, contemplating our short conversation. When I closed my eyes and allowed Allison to begin touching up my face powder, I heard his footsteps receding and let out a shallow breath. Once Pedro was out of earshot, Alison put her makeup brush back in the right compartment in her belt bag and whistled lowly. I looked at her, confused.
"You know he's just trying to be nice," she chastised.
"Well, I don't need him to be nice. I know what I'm doing. If he crossed a line, he would know."
Alison threw up her hands lazily.
Once they were ready to begin the scene again, I stepped back into the shower with only a strapless thong on to allow me at least a little bit of modesty. Pedro stepped in behind me in a similar fashion. We made eye contact and he smiled warmly at me, despite the awkward air crowding the entire set.
"Okay, start the shower." I faced the water, Pedro behind me. "Great, and action!"
