He closed his eyes and braced himself for the excruciating pain he was about to feel. But nothing came. Even the light from the flame no longer shone red through his eyelids. He crashed onto something soft with a grunt. He opened his eyes.

George walked over to an array of buttons on one of the walls. In a streak of orange, he pressed some of them, faster than the naked eye could have seen. Below the buttons was a small alcove, from which he pulled out a meaty sandwich that resembled a cheeseburger, but I sensed wasn't cow.

After she finished clearing off her plate, she pressed the pause button on her music. Usually, Úrsula would allow whatever was playing to finish as she awaited Mamãe to bring her whatever dessert she had made, but she had left her book on a cliffhanger. It pained her to leave the music, but at the moment, this was her priority. She leapt on her bed and picked up her book right where she had left off, not bothering to get into her usual comfortable position, as she was too excited. Immediately, she felt her surroundings disappear. She left the confines of the room she’d lived in for the past five years, and entered the world that only existed in the ink forever tattooed on the face of the binded yellowed pages.

Jill took it, holding it so Jack could see it, too.

Tierney glanced down at the duvet he was sitting on. He rubbed his hand across it, feeling the familiar static shock. He kept sliding his palm back and forth and back and forth until he heard a crackling sound. He lifted his hand, concentrating as hard as he could, until he saw a spark. He rubbed his hands together until what appeared to be a purple lightning flickered around them. He stood, holding one hand palm-up, curling his fingers inward. A sparking purple ball of electricity had formed in his palm. He laughed giddly, opening his hand slightly so the ball got bigger. His hand shook and the electricity shot upward, blasting Tierney over the bed and causing him to crash onto the floor.

Your snippet:

The town sends me off. A tight knit community, so it’s a big deal when someone comes or goes. I’m the first of my generation to go in a very long time. Besides those who left to train for the royal guard and become a knight, no one my age has left. The boat ride is short, our island is quite close to the next. Tayanbith. It has the biggest mountain range, and also the only island with such vast and varied weather. Even as I soar on the ocean, freezing wind making my two braids dance, I can feel the temperature rise.

My rewrite:

The town turns out to see me go. In a tight-knit community like this, comings and goings are always important. Especially when I'm the first in a very long time of my generation to leave — except the ones who go to train for the royal guard, then become knights. It's a short boat ride from our island to Tayanbith. Of all the islands, Tayanbith has the biggest mountain range and the least predictable weather. I can feel the temperature rise even out here, soaring on the ocean, the freezing wind catching my braids and making them dance.

Part 3 of my world building posts! I'm gonna arrange these guys in order of their importance to the Plot™, and how much I dote on them.

So, without further ado,

The Godhuntress, Ina

She's literally my PFP :)

Lived: 2000-4050AC

Height: 3.5m (11'6 for Americans)

Pronouns: She/Her

Race: Angel of Nature (her halo is just flowers)

Was completely loyal to the Gods until her husband got killed for abandoning his post to pluck some flowers for her

Then she went completely apeshit and genocided the gods

Possessed a secret Voidic ritual to drain magic from others, which gave her the power to defeat the Gods

Killed her daughter, Isobel, in a fit of rage after Iz tried to stop her from killing the last goddess, the Goddess of Dreams, who was just a child

Massacred the Fae, elves, and forest spirits

Jumped into the Void out of grief when she realised she had become a monster like the gods (see it here)

Speaks like she came out of the bible

Basically the biggest deity in modern Triworld

Been living rent free in my head since I was 6

2. The Spirit Emperor, Hans-el

Obsessive midgeted psycho

Lived: 3595- AC

Height: 130cm/4'3 (145/4'9 in his high shoes)

Pronouns: He/Him (caps included)

Race: Forest Spirit

Has an everlasting grudge against Ina for killing his best friend, the Goddess of Dreams, in front of him

Knows her power ritual because he saw her do it, and used it to gain enough power to become Emperor for vengeance

After she died, he set all the souls of the gods free for the heck of it

Like Ina, is power-corrupt and evil. Unlike her, he doesn't give a shit about it

Bastard has his little fingers in every bit of the Plot™

No seriously, if the story's set after Ina, it's events are probably his fault

You'll find him cameoing as either Hans or just 'the spirit'

Will murder you if you call him short (he is, even by spirit standards)

Inexplicably in love with Hash

Possibly the oldest being alive in Modern Triworld, not that she'd let anyone know it

Wears an elf body because that's what she pretended to be during the Runic Wars

Goes by Hash Brown because the Lich-Queen said it would be cool, and he's possibly forgotten his own name by this point

Actually pretty smart but pretends to be a ditz

Pathological trickster who feels bad getting people in trouble

Moved into Hans' castle one day, became his partner in crime (and everything else) and never left

Feels bad for deserting his people during the Ruinic War (cos he couldn't accept genociding humanity) and as such looks after the remaining shapeshifters

Drinking buddies with the Luxatian Exorcists, who all actually believe she's an elf

Fakes an incredibly strong Paliodaen accent

Secretly, deep within his heart, a good person

4. The Lich-Queen, Iraela Foundling

Race: Human turned Lich

Found in the End of the World along with her sister, Ramaeria, and brought into Ceredellian Royal society

She showed no powers so she stayed hidden away while her sister, an Oracle, danced with nobles

Met and fell in love with a minor duke

When she discovered she was a necromancer of epic proportions, she tore Ceredell apart and remade it into the Deadlands

Has a god-awful inferiority complex and deep rooted jealousy

Still somehow trying to live up to her dead sister's image

Cannot stop cracking jokes at the worst possible timing

Thought it was funny to tell a young shifter to name himself Hashbrown

Main proponent of the Ruinic War, because she hates humanity (she doesn't want to be reminded that she was one)

Random WIP Rant: outfits :)

This is just me explaining a random WIP-related topic! I've been thinking a lot about outfits and costuming for Liminal Bird-Dogs, especially from an on-screen perspective as it's a movie script wip! So here is me going on a little tangent about that ↓

Cal: earth tones, baggy (ish) clothes, denim, cutesy jewelry, long jackets, signature pair of overalls, clothes for camping/hiking, minimal amount of stuff (doesn't like to over-shop/have a cluttered closet) ↓

Mary-Ella: muted tones and greyscale, big coat with small tops, baggy jeans or mini skirts, accessories, signature leather jacket, thrifted fashion ↓

Winnie: mix of colours and patterns, flannels, denim, thrifted/hand-me-downs from relatives or bought from small ethical businesses ↓

Inola: mostly neutral tones, linens, prioritizes comfort and movement over style, works a lot so she usually is wearing her uniform ↓

Five things I like about writing

Rules: share five things you love about writing!

Uncovering the mysteries of who my OCs are and what the stories are about. Although I lean more towards being a planner, it's mainly for larger stuff. As I get closer and closer to understanding my story, I love it when it takes a new direction or I figure out a new detail!

Revising. It's my favorite part of the writing process. I do enjoy drafting, but the act of making something better is so satisfying. Every time I change a word or a small phrase I feel so much better!

People are reading TSP! I love getting feedback because people are engaging with my story and helping me make it better! It helps me learn what I'm doing right and what needs work. And helps with #1-2 and oftentimes a new perspective helps uncover my story and helps revise.

My OCs. God I love them so so so much!!! Tying into #1, I love learning more about them! But mostly, it's just them! I've worked hard to make them distinct, and it's paying off! Every time I add something new to benefit their character, I love them even more!

The community I've formed here. I love the little comments I get from everyone, and I love when I get asks that make me think really hard about TSP. I've figured out many obvious things as I've answered. Sometimes I get a question I never thought of and I have to make something up on the spot, and I end up doing work I never knew I needed to do! Which also ties into #1.

Hey, I've been posting stuff for a while but haven't actually bothered to introduce myself, so here goes:

I'm Leah, she/her

I write mostly fantasy, and I try (and fail) to write anything else

Quite possibly the world's biggest fan of CJ Cherryh (who's so underrated, please check out her Chanur Saga for sci-fi or Fortress in the Eye of Time for fantasy!!)

I dabble in animation, mostly blender simulations, especially nodes (so please please please, talk to me about your ideas)

Currently working on a novel (about 15k words in, distracted by my 20+ side projects)

If you enjoy descriptive writing, boy will you like the stuff I do :)

I'd love feedback of any kind, especially criticism! I always want to improve :)
