After you had discovered yourself to be a werewolf, of course you had gone into hiding - well, you had been hiding within your father’s house, and Apocalypse Forest occasionally to visit the waterfall you’d basically grown up with; you’d often tended to flee to it ever since you were quite small considering the fact that your father wasn’t very nice company. He’d started beating you as soon as he felt as if he could after he had taken to drinking following the passing of your mother after she had given birth to you, and in an attempt to try and avoid being administered another beating by him, you would often make sure to be away from the house whenever he was home, before returning when he was asleep as you were afraid of what might happen if you tried to live within the forest; you didn’t yet feel ready to engage in a life like the one you were supposed to be living being a werewolf, and you doubted your ability to ever feel ready for it, like you now knew your mother had, and was a better Alpha than you knew you could ever be, terrifying you even more, as well as leaving you feeling even less prepared, and even more lost, somehow.
Sometimes you did think about what it might be like to return to university, and therefore your best friend Harleen Quinzel, but whenever you did, you couldn’t help, but think about your recent realisation; you were terrified of hurting her, and knew that you might easily end up losing control around her as she made you feel numb, and weak, as if you were ready to do anything for her; she’d had this effect on you ever since you had first met her, and imprinted on her, and you knew that you’d never be able to hide your true identity from her, now - how could you, when your imprinting on her had left you longing to follow her wherever she went; longing to stick to her side, and give her all that you could - even your entire life, and in your own opinion meaningless existence - to protect, and cherish her own.
Another deterring thought regarding returning to her was the fact that she had recently started seeing a guy named Max, and you despised him; he was partly the reason for you discovering your true identity as early as you had. Whenever you saw them together, your blood would boil whilst you silently seethed, when little did you know Harleen felt the same way for you; she always had, but had been afraid of telling you for fear of you possibly rejecting her, making things awkward between you both. Upon being reminded of his existence, you couldn’t help, but growl quietly, and even whimper barely audibly; it was excruciating, thinking of Harleen, and all the perfect memories you’d already made together regarding the time you’d first taken her to the waterfall within Apocalypse Forest, all the times you’d both started fights within your classes, as well as the canteen, and all the times you both would cuddle up together in your bed after your father had beat you, without him knowing that she was there to try and provide comfort to you whilst you cried, and shook within her embrace until you both blissfully fell asleep within one another’s arms.
You couldn’t help, but wonder if she was thinking of you the way that you were currently thinking of her whilst you stood in the garden, resting the back of your head upon the wall behind you to allow the rain to pour down upon your face; it was quite refreshing, and seemed to be keeping you calm enough for you to stop yourself from changing into your wolf form; there was no telling what you might do if you did as the first time you had, you recalled how you’d unintentionally mauled two innocent civilians passing through Apocalypse Forest at the wrong time, unable to stop yourself as you’d been taken over by the anger of the wolf within you, and couldn’t calm yourself down to a point that would allow you to change back, or regain enough control to stop running, and damaging whatever had been in your way that day. Of course this had occurred after you’d first seen Harleen and Max together, and had been told that they’d be going to the student bar on the site of the university, so she wouldn’t be able to go back with you to your father’s house, and you knew you should be happy for her, but you found you couldn’t fight back the anger and jealousy that was seeping throughout your veins, making it harder for you to keep yourself together, until you reminded yourself of Harleen, and couldn’t help, but smile softly whilst you allowed your eyelids to close, though it was still painful to be reminded of how she was no longer here with you, most likely with Max again, until you picked up her sweet scent nearby, and would falter.
It was shortly after that moment that the doorbell rang, and you wouldn’t hesitate to rush back inside, before you stopped at the front door, and would appear nervous for a moment - what if it wasn’t her, and was your father, instead, though you knew your ability to pick up certain scents had never failed you so far. You also couldn’t help, but worry about what you might do if you opened the door for her; you could easily lose control, and accidentally hurt her, somehow, despite the fact that you had never done it before - though she seemed to make you feel as if you might easily change, she also seemed to make you feel stable enough to remain in your human form, supported by your will, and longing to keep her safe that reminded you to be more careful around her for fear of you prompting her to run away from you, though sometimes you wished she would, believing she deserved better than you, and would be safer without you being a part of her life, no matter how small a part you believed yourself to be within it.
In the end, it would be the urge to see her again, and the fact that you could sense her sadness on the other side of the door that pushed you to open it. Upon having your gaze fall upon her, your heart would skip a beat, and eyes would glint whilst you had to try and fight back a soft smile, until you noticed the pained expression on her face that she briefly tried to hide whilst she smiled faintly over at you, and would occasionally break eye contact with you as if she were afraid of you finding out something that she was trying to hide whilst she stood before you, worrying you as you looked around behind her, wondering if someone had been following her, until you picked up Max’s scent tainting her own; they’d recently been together, and this would prompt you to scowl; what could he have done to her to leave her in a state like this?
“I thought you’d be here,” she mused, her voice briefly trembling whilst she timidly shuffled on the spot, “I’m sorry I didn’t call you before coming over, I just-.. I had to see you, Nugget, I-.. M-Max, he-..” She would then awkwardly look around, before glancing up at you again anxiously; he must have been following her for a reason unbeknownst to you as you knew he couldn’t be a werewolf; the scent of a werewolf seemed to be different from his, therefore he couldn’t have imprinted on her like you had, excruciatingly. “Could I-.. m-maybe-.. come in for a bit, if it’s not a bad time for you right now?” She requested, and you would hesitate, prompting her heart to sink a little, and her eyes to darken slightly; she hated how things seemed to have changed between you and her ever since she had started seeing Max, and wished she’d never let it happen, now, especially when she’d never actually had feelings for him, in the first place.
“I don’t think that’s a good idea,” you strained out, leaving your throat burning a little as you bit down on your tongue to try and stop your voice from trembling; you hated yourself for what you were doing, but you knew she would be safer without you, if she gave up on you, no matter how much it would hurt you to lose her the way you believed you were, “I’m sorry, Quinzels-”
Before you could shut the door, she would hastily stop it from closing with her right foot, desperate to try and fix things between you both, somehow. You wouldn’t hesitate to re-open the door, determining that she was going to make that move, and you weren’t about to let herself get hurt if you still tried to close the door with her foot in the way.
“I never loved him,” she blurted out hastily, prompting you to falter as you appeared surprised by her revelation, as well as relieved, and hopeful for a moment, until you remembered what you were, and how you could easily hurt her if you lost control of yourself, “Y-Y/n, I-.. I love you,” she stated, unable to hide her feelings for you anymore, “it’s always been you, a-and-.. I know you love me-”
“I think you should-.. you should go,” you interjected feebly, though you knew she was right; you were in love with her, ever since your gaze had first fallen upon her, and you had imprinted on her, but you had to do what you believed was right for her, and that was to get her to give up on you, knowing she could never be safe, or happy with you, no matter how much it would excruciatingly break you to lose her, “please, Harleen-”
“But it’s true; you know it’s true; you know I’m right, and that you’re in love with me - I’ve seen the way you’ve looked at me, and the way you’ve looked at him-”
“Don’t act like you know me, Quinzel, because you don’t,” you interrupted sharply, and she would fall quiet, a hurt look on her face; you’d never snapped at her before like you just did, before your expression softened; you evidently felt guilty, and knew you were wrong for the way you had reacted, prompting Harleen to feel guilty alongside you as she knew that if she’d never got together with Max, maybe things would be different between you both; maybe nothing would have changed, when - unbeknownst to her - you would always be trying to protect her by dissuading her from you after you had found out about you being a werewolf, “I’m sorry, Harleen, I - I didn’t mean-”
“Save it,” she murmured, and you would frown, before hastily shaking your head, and timidly inching closer to her only to have her step back, no matter how much it pained her to do so whilst she longed to throw her arms around you, and to reassure you that she’d forgiven you already, believing herself to be partly to blame for your change in demeanour, “look-.. f-for what it’s worth-.. I’m sorry; I really am, I-.. I should never have assumed-.. I’ll go-”
“No-!” You cried, surprising her as she stopped, and would glance up at you again, wondering why you’d want her to stay if you didn’t feel the same way for her like you were making it seem like you didn’t. “S-Stay, please, because-.. because I care about you, okay? A-And I don’t want to lose you, Quinzels,” you expressed shakily, and she would frown when she noticed that you were trying not to cry, prompting her heart to sink; she hated seeing you like this, “c-come in; it’s cold out there, and I don’t want you to get sick.”You then wouldn’t hesitate to step aside, allowing her to enter into the hallway of your father’s home, before you closed the door to keep the cold out for her; the special Crystal within you, and every other werewolf, was allowing you to heat yourself up, and even supposedly was meant to heal your wounds whenever they were inflicted upon you - according to your aunt, who was also a werewolf - as long as the wounds hadn’t been inflicted by silver weaponry of any kind which would be able to burn you, and possibly even kill you. “Do you need me to get you anything-? Water, o-or a blanket, maybe-? You look like - like you’ve got soaked through out there-”
“Please, just-.. just hold me,” she requested timidly, her voice briefly trembling, and close to a whisper, and you would falter, hesitating, but it wasn’t because you didn’t want to hold her close to you - of course you did, and had ever since you’d decided to stop showing up for your lectures, and lessons with her as you both were studying Psychology, following you finding out about you being a werewolf - “w-what, you-.. you can’t even hug me, now?”
“No,” you whined, not wanting her to think that you didn’t want to when you did, more than anything, “it - it’s not like that, Harleen, I-..”
“Really? W-Well, that’s what it looks like,” she contradicted, “I don’t understand, Y/n, our-.. our friendship, it-.. it wasn’t supposed to end like this.”
“You’re right,” you agreed dejectedly, “it wasn’t, but-.. I guess there’s nothing we can do to change it, now, right? We used to do everything together, remember? W-What happened to that? What happened to us being the double trouble duo like we used to be? What happened to us being best friends, Harleen? Or was it all just Max, this whole time?”
“It’s not like I wanted anything to change between us, Y/n-”
“Well it still did, a-and apparently for nothing, if you really never loved him, in the first place,” you reminded her, and she would nod gravely, before bowing her head slightly, wishing she’d never started dating him again as she hated seeing things break down between you both like they were, now, “a-and now you’re telling me you love me, a-as if-.. as if nothing happened.”
“I know, a-and I’m sorry, I really am, I-.. I’m so sorry,” she repeated, desperate to fix all that had been broken recently to the best of her ability somehow, before she could lose you, “I-.. I never should have-.. this is all my fault.”
She then couldn’t hold it back anymore as a strained sob would manage to escape her lips, prompting you to falter, a pained expression on your face, before she buried her face into her hands, sobbing uncontrollably into her palms though she felt bad for doing so, knowing that it hurt you to see her crying the way she was, now.
“No, Quinzels,” you cooed, before you timidly inched closer to her to wrap your arms around her carefully, soothing her instantly, before she melted into your embrace, and would cling to your shoulders whilst she buried her face into the crook of your neck; she’d missed being within your arms like she was, now, especially missing the warm and fuzzy feeling she seemed to receive whenever you both were holding each other the way that you were, now, revelling in the feeling of being so close to one another the way you often did during blissful moments like these that you shared together, “it’s not your fault, I-.. I shouldn’t have reacted like that, I know, I just-.. I’ve missed you-.. a-and nothing has been the same since I lost you..”
“You never lost me; you’ll never lose me, Nugget, I promise,” she tried to reassure you, holding you at arm’s length so she could blissfully lock eyes with you, soothing you as you subconsciously smiled warmly over at her, before leaning closer a little, finding yourself longing to connect your lips to her own, but you would quickly - upon reminding yourself of how you might easily lose control of yourself if you gave into your feelings for her - pull away, prompting her smile to fade, and her heart to sink again, but she would try and hide this from you, without knowing - evidently - that you could tell when she was sad, prompting you to feel guilty for how you’d pulled away the way you had, but you would try and remind yourself that you were doing it in an attempt to protect her; that you weren’t wrong for reacting the way you had, when you knew you’d always believe that you were, no matter how much you tried to convince yourself otherwise.
“My father will be home soon,” you mused, and she would frown upon realising, before nodding gravely, and releasing your arms so she could hold your hands, instead, and you would begin to feel warm and fuzzy alongside her again whilst your heart raced overwhelmingly; you’d never be used to feeling this way, and were still terrified that you might end up hurting her, somehow, if you managed to lose control of yourself unexpectedly, “c-could you-.. meet me later? I need to get him out of the way, first; have to make him dinner, before he goes to bed.”
“Yeah, of course,” Harleen replied, appearing elated; she hoped this might mean that things had returned to the way they were, before, or that maybe you both could progress into something more than best friends, now, as long as you were comfortable doing so whenever you felt able to address your and her feelings for one another, “w-where - where should I meet you? Here, or-?”
“Do you remember where the waterfall is, i-in Apocalypse Forest?” You inquired, hopeful, and she would nod hastily - of course she remembered; the day you’d first taken her there had been one of the best she had ever experienced, and it had helped her to realise that she had been developing feelings for you ever since she’d first met you; she recalled she had even almost kissed you, that day, before trying to cover up her intentions by wrapping her arms around you as if she’d only been intending to hug you, secretly disheartening you as you’d already imprinted on her, and had fast been falling deeply in love with her.
“Of course I do; I love it there,” she answered, prompting your heart to skip a beat, and you to smile warmly again over at her whilst she beamed back at you, glad to see you smiling again after all that had happened recently; she’d even recently forgotten about how Max had beaten her, before he’d begun following her as if he wanted to beat her again, or even maybe rape, or kill her for breaking up with him the way she had after he had tried to abuse her again for arguing with him a little while ago, “I - I’ve loved it there ever since you first took me there.”
“I’m glad,” you responded, “it has always been like a second home to me - s-so-.. would you - would you be up for meeting me there, maybe?”
“I’d love to,” she chimed, relieving you as you smiled sheepishly over at her, “now - what time do you want me to meet you?”
🜚
Once the sun had gone down, Harleen began to walk through Apocalypse Forest with the intention of meeting you at the waterfall within it, and in an attempt to protect her from the possible other werewolves, mainly Omegas, you would silently trot alongside her in your wolf form, making sure to keep out of her sight by taking cover behind the trees and brambles she was passing; you had been afraid of her not going with you if you told her about the other uninvited beasts, not wanting her to know about this other world she was currently unaware of.
However, just as you had expected once you both had begun to get deeper into the forest, a growl would sound out near her, prompting her to jump, startled, whilst she looked to her left, and slowly began to back away whilst you silently begged her to run, and would even unintentionally phase with her, managing to speak to her through your and her bond.
‘Run, Harleen!’ You cried in her head, and she would falter upon hearing your voice, before she began to run down the path she had already been making progress on. She had been right for moving when she did as the Omega werewolf that had snarled beside her stepped out, its violet eyes shimmering whilst it scanned the area you were in opposite it, but you wouldn’t let it have the upper hand, jumping out of the brambles when it least expected you to, allowing you to maul at its neck, and then scratch at its chest to take out the crystal within it, meaning the Omega werewolf would now no longer have the ability to heal itself.
Once you were sure it was dead, you would be reminded of Harleen running away, and you would hastily begin running toward the waterfall again using the cover of the trees; you still were terrified of unintentionally revealing yourself to her, somehow, and made sure to - once you had got there - change back into your human form so you could get dressed; it was ideal that you undress yourself before changing or you’d end up tearing all of your clothes - that’s why you’d had to buy a few bits of new attire recently, even if you had been hiding away at home without the intention of leaving, and unintentionally losing control of yourself in front of Harleen, as well as other people who might be at risk whenever you were amongst them.
After you’d managed to finish dressing, you would rush out into the clearing, desperately searching for her, until you began to panic, assuming maybe she hadn’t arrived yet, or had got hurt by another Omega, until someone threw their arms around you, and you would have lost control of yourself if it weren’t for Harleen’s sweet scent flooding your nostrils, and of course you recognised the way she giggled; her laugh had always been magical, and infectious as you couldn’t help, but giggle alongside her whilst you turned around to wrap your arms around her, glad, as well as relieved beyond belief to see that she was okay whilst your heart blissfully raced alongside your own.
“Where were you-? I was scared; I thought you had lost your way,” you admitted, your voice briefly trembling, and Harleen would hastily shake her head, before turning you a little so you could see the cave she’d been sitting in whilst you were finishing off the Omega, running back, and searching for her, “right; I guess I should have checked there, too - sorry I’m a little late-”
“You were late? I thought I heard your voice,” she mused, appearing puzzled, and you would try not to wince, shrugging, and luckily she would let it go, not intending to make you feel uncomfortable by questioning you any further after what you had both already been through together recently, “maybe I didn’t. A-Anyway, what do you want to do?”
“Just - catch up, I guess,” you answered, and she would raise her eyebrows, surprised, before smirking over at you, and looking toward the lake beneath the water fall, “what do you want to do?”
“Same thing as you, but - I was thinking maybe we could do our catching up in the lake? What do you say?” She inquired, hopeful as her stunning icy blue eyes would begin to glint, and you would appear nervous whilst you thought about it - firstly, you had brought no swim suit with you, and secondly: you weren’t exactly a great, or confident swimmer. “It’ll be fun, I promise,” she encouraged, and you would hesitate, beginning to stammer a little whilst you tried to think of another reason why you thought it could be a bad idea.
“I - I’m not sure; I haven’t brought a swim suit, or anything; I didn’t think you’d want to go swimming - I’m so sorry-”
“That’s okay,” she remarked, and you would express relief, assuming she had given in, until she grinned over at you, and a mischievous glint had begun to form within her eyes, “I haven’t brought one, either - have you ever tried skinny dipping, before?” You would tense up upon recognising the term, before shaking your head gravely; you’d never be used to being naked in front of her, afraid of what she might think of you if you ever were as you doubted someone as perfect as her would ever be attracted to a supposed nobody with a body like your’s, when really she knew already that her feelings could never change for you, and that she would always love every part of you, no matter what. “It’s easy; you just get naked and get into the water, basically,” she explained, and you would nod again timidly, “it’s okay if you don’t wanna do it - I don’t mind being on my lonesome in there-”
“I’ll do it,” you blurted out, not wanting to disappoint her, whilst you also hoped maybe you would be impressing her by agreeing to it, and you could tell that you had judging by the surprised, as well as relieved and excited look on her face whilst she cheered, prompting you to subconsciously beam over at her, before you lowered your head a little upon noticing her beginning to take her shirt off; you thought maybe she’d want you to give her privacy, when she had been hoping to maybe catch you sneakily looking at her, but she would try not to get her hopes up as she wasn’t yet sure if her assumptions that you felt the same for her were correct, yet, until she did happen to catch you staring at one point, admiring her whilst you appeared flustered, blood rushing to your cheeks, and your fangs subconsciously extending.
As soon as you realised she had caught you, you would wince, before hastily looking away, whilst you began to blush even more profusely than you were, before, prompting her to giggle, before she piled up her clothes by the edge of the lake, and wouldn’t hesitate to walk into it until she was almost submerged, before she turned to face you, waiting patiently for you to join her.
“It’s your turn now, Nugget,” she chimed, and you would appear worried again, prompting her to feel a little guilty, though she couldn’t imagine why you’d be anxious about what she might think of you when she already believed everything about you to be perfect, unbeknownst to you, “want me to turn around whilst you get ready?”
“I-.. I don’t mind, I guess,” you answered, before managing to smile reassuringly over at her, but she would try and make you feel more comfortable regardless by distracting herself with the lake as she swam peacefully around it, only occasionally peeking over at you whenever you weren’t looking, but whenever she did she found it getting harder and harder not to stare, and admire you the way you had her for a brief moment before she had caught you in the act of doing so, prompting you to grow more flustered, and to feel bad as you knew it was wrong of you to stare no mater how much you longed to, and found her body to be the most perfect and beautiful you had ever seen. Once you’d managed to undress fully, you would timidly approach the water, before setting your clothes down beside her own, and subconsciously hugging your chest. “W-Wait, Quinzels I-..” You began again, beginning to be overwhelmed by your fear of drowning, and knowledge of how bad you are at swimming, and floating like she was, now. Upon hearing your voice again, she would glance up at you, and find it extremely difficult not to allow her gaze to drift down your body, but she could tell that she already viewed it to be perfect, and loved every part of it, just like how you loved everything about her, and had ever since you’d first met her. “I’m scared,” you admitted, your voice barely audible, and Harleen would tilt her head partially, a concerned expression on her face, before she began to swim back to you, and you would hesitantly crouch down opposite her, bowing your head; you were evidently ashamed of yourself for being afraid, whilst she couldn’t help, but find your reaction adorable, offering you her right hand whilst she smiled warmly up at you, and you wouldn’t hesitate to intertwine the fingers of your left hand with her own whilst you smiled lovingly back at her subconsciously.
“You know you don’t have to do this, right?” She reminded you gently, and you would nod, your smile instantly fading whilst you bowed your head again a little; you were still afraid of disappointing her by pulling out of going into the lake with her. “You can just sit here and keep looking pretty for me, if you want?” She reassured, but you would shake your head hastily, determined to try and join her in the water, somehow, without getting scared, and panicking like you had the second time you’d both gone to the waterfall together.
“I can do it,” you stated, trying to provide yourself with more confidence, and Harleen would nod in agreement with you, before she gently squeezed your hand to try and relax you even more, “I just-..”
“I’m here when you need me, okay? I could even hold you until you feel like you can try and swim with me? Or I could just go on holding you up for the rest of our lives; both ideas sound good to me,” she mused, and you couldn’t help, but appear flustered whilst more blood began to rush to your cheeks, prompting her to smirk up at you again; she couldn’t help, but revel in the effect she seemed to always have on you whenever you both were together like you were, now. “So - do you want me to just hold you, or am I supposed to just let you go when you think you can swim?” She asked, and you would pretend to think about it for a moment, prompting her to pout a little, and you to have to try and fight back a giggle, prompting her to grin sheepishly up at you whilst her stunning icy blue eyes would begin to glint again alongside your own.
“I - I guess I’d love for you to hold me for a bit, but - I want you to be able to have some fun; you wouldn’t be able to swim if you were stuck holding me up the whole time-”
“Yeah, but - I could try,” she reminded you, and you would hesitate, before shrugging, “and even if I couldn’t, I wouldn’t mind because holding you would make me even happier than swimming ever could - c’mon, join me, Nugget - it’s lonely in here without you.”
“I thought you said you wouldn’t mind being on your lonesome in there,” you recalled, and Harleen would wince, before shaking her head, and grinning up at you again whilst you giggled, guessing she was embarrassed now that she remembered she had told you she wouldn’t mind, when she’d rather share the water with you, every time; she hated being away from you; hated having gaps of any kind between you both, like you, too, hated being away from her - the last couple of weeks away from her had been more than excruciating for the both of you, especially after Harleen had realised - after a few days - that maybe you weren’t coming back to study with her, when she needed your support more than anyone else’s after Max had begun to abuse her.
“I meant - I thought I wouldn’t mind,” she clarified, and you would realise, before nodding slowly whilst you smirked knowingly over at her, “but now I do, seeing you over there - want me to get out and carry you in?”
“You’d never be able to carry me, especially near water; I’d start panicking and struggling-”
“Not when it’s me who is carrying you, silly,” she contradicted, “here - let me come and get you, and prove to you that I can do it.”
“Sure; I’d like to see you try,” you remarked, and she would raise her eyebrows, before beginning to wade the rest of the way out of the lake after she had reluctantly released your hand, and you would falter, finding you couldn’t help, but stare again, admiring her figure, prompting her to grin, and tilt her head partially whilst you had to fight back a whimper, and would accidentally draw blood from your lip using your fangs as you hadn’t been focussing on where you were directing them whilst you were focused solely on her.
“You like staring,” she teased you, and you would wince, before hastily drawing your gaze back up to her stunning icy blue eyes whilst you began to blush profusely again, “don’t worry; I like it, too - I might have even stolen a look or two at you whilst you were getting ready to join me earlier.”
You would appear surprised, before timidly rubbing your right arm using your left hand; you didn’t think she would bother, having everything about her be perfect, whilst you believed yourself to be nothing, compared to her, but her beauty would always be incomparable, if that fact you were certain.
“Did you like what you saw-?” You inquired, and she would smirk, before crouching down in front of you, and teasing you by leaning closer to you to make it so that her lips were inches from your’s, even occasionally brush her’s against them, prompting you to shudder, and tense up a little whilst your breath caught in your throat; your emotions and urges were beginning to overwhelm you dangerously, but if it weren’t for her being with you the way she was now, you knew you’d most likely wolf out on the spot; she was your tether, and you’d never lose full control of yourself to the point that you were dangerous around her, unless danger, or violence, was required for whatever reason, like in the event of an ambush by the Omegas - you’d had to kill the one that had threatened her life earlier, and that was more your choice as she had briefly been with you, before running away like you had advised her to; you’d never let anything hurt her - you couldn’t. If you’d ever lost her, you knew you would never be able to forgive yourself, and would never be able to live your life normally ever again, a scenario that threatened you turning into an empty, and greedy Omega, or taking your own life as a result of losing the only reason why you were currently alive.
“I loved everything that I saw,” she answered truthfully as well as a little seductively, prompting you to whimper barely audibly whilst your body began to heat up even more than usual - soon you’d be verging on having no control left; you’d give into your urges, eventually, instead of fight them back, if she kept on teasing you the way that she currently was, brushing her lips against your own again whilst she raised her right hand up to your left cheek, prompting you to instantly melt into her blissful, warm, and soothing touch subconsciously, “I love you, Nugget-”
“Wait, Harleen,” you whined, and she would hesitantly stop, allowing her stunning icy blue eyes to lock blissfully with your’s, “we can’t do this; I’m not who you think I am; I’m not good for you; you - you deserve better than me, I - I’m-”
“What are you talking about, Y/n? You’re more than good for me,” she contradicted, “hey, don’t - don’t cry-”
You would then shake your head gravely, before hastily lifting your right hand to wipe away your tears to the best of your ability as you didn’t want to upset her, deciding that you should tell her the truth about what you were, now, afraid of what she’d think about you if she found out on a later date, instead.
“Do you remember the creature that threatened you?” You asked, and she would appear taken aback by the question, not expecting it as she thought about an answer for a moment, remembering how she’d heard something snarling, or growling to her left side, prompting her to nod whilst a thoughtful look crossed her face. “I’m-.. I’m one of them, Harleen,” you admitted gravely, bowing your head whilst she subconsciously drew back a little, shocked; she certainly wasn’t expecting this from you, and even began to fear that maybe you were just lying to try and get out of being with her, though she couldn’t imagine why you’d decide to lie to her now after you’d both already been occasionally staring at one another’s naked bodies, as if you were both experiencing the same emotions and urges at the same time for one another. “I’m sorry I never told you before, but-.. I-.. I was scared, I-”
“Cut the bull crap,” she retorted, prompting you to falter as you glanced up at her dejectedly, guessing she couldn’t yet believe you, unless you showed her, “you’re just trying to get out of becoming anything more than best friends with me, aren’t you? You don’t have to lie, Y/n; I want you to be comfortable - you could have just told me that you didn’t want to do any of this with me, you know that, right? I can’t believe you thought it would be better to lie to me, trying to make out that you’re some animal, or something; I would have understood if you told me the truth, but I guess you just think I’m stupid enough to believe some bullshit story like the one you just gave me. I’m gonna go.”
Harleen then got up off of the ground, and would begin dressing back up whilst you began to panic, trying to further convince her without having to change in front of her, determined you could do so.
“It’s true, Quinzels, I swear,” you whined, “please don’t make me show you; it isn’t safe-”
“Just give up already, Y/n,” she uttered, before walking hastily back through the trees, you following closely behind her despite your lack of clothing at the time, “it’s too late for you to try and change my mind; I can’t believe you ever thought you could pull something like that on me.”
“But-”
Another snarl would then sound out, followed by the emergence of two dark-looking Omega wolves; they often liked to do their hunting at this time, and Harleen would falter whilst you tensed up beside her, before grimacing, and protectively holding her close to you whilst you hooked your right arm around her waist.
“W-What the fuck-” Harleen strained out shakily, shocked by the sight before her; the wolves were just as tall as you both, and she’d never seen anything like them before, terrified as her body began to tremble a little, and you would frown upon feeling it, and sensing her distress.
“Stay behind me,” you advised gently, and she would instantly relax upon hearing your voice beside her, nodding hastily whilst she slowly moved so that she was stood behind you, though she was worried about you being hurt by them, hoping that they’d instead run away if you both remained still, and quiet, but you knew that was something they’d never do, glancing back at her, and smiling warmly to try and reassure her that you’d both be okay, before you began slowly approaching them, baring your extended fangs up at them whilst you growled quietly back at them, prompting each of them to snort whilst their eyes dangerously flashed in response to your growl. ‘You better run away, if you don’t have a death wish,’ you threatened them, and they both couldn’t help, but smirk over at you, not threatened at all, especially not whilst you were in the state that you currently were in - still naked, and vulnerable, like a little fawn, and they would then lick their lips; the idea of hunting a small fawn seemed appetising to them, and there you were for them already as they bared their teeth back, and would slowly inch closer to you whilst one of them seemed to be trying to meander around you to get to Harleen, but you wouldn’t let them, snarling back at them and trying to cover her whilst she would appear shocked by how you seemed to be communicating with the wolves, as if you were one of them, and at first she wondered if you were imitating the noises they were making, though they were incredibly accurate, as if you weren’t simply trying to mock them.
‘What will you do, if we don’t run away?’ One of them asked, feigning intrigue, and you would lift your eyebrows, before moving forward as if you were about to try and attack it, prompting it to jump back, not expecting the sudden movement whilst you smirked, smug in response to their reaction to your movement.
‘You don’t wanna know,’ you claimed, and the same Omega would recompose itself, before shaking its head whilst a mischievously glint would form in its eyes, but you would try and hide your fear from them for Harleen’s sake, determined to try and get her out of this situation alive, even if it meant you’d lose your life to save her own.
‘I think we do,’ it contradicted, ‘right, brother?’
You would then falter upon being reminded of the other werewolf; it had managed to meander around you whilst you were threatening the other still currently opposite you, and you wouldn’t hesitate to turn around, before jumping at it upon noticing that it had been about to strike at Harleen, prompting her to cry out in fear whilst she watched you and the werewolf brawling viciously, except she would be shocked to find that you were no longer in sight - now there was another werewolf, and not a human, prompting her eyes to widen a little - you’d been telling her the truth, this whole time; you were a werewolf, and you hadn’t been lying to her just to try and avoid becoming anything more than her best friend a brief moment ago.
“Shit-!” Harleen whisper-shouted after the other werewolf had managed to knock her down to the ground; she’d forgot it was there, whilst she was panicking over you possibly getting hurt, even if you were something not fully human, and supposedly dangerous; she’d hurt about how the creatures within Apocalypse Forest were meant to be avoided, left to the hunters sent within it to hunt them down.
‘Harleen!’ You cried upon noticing her struggling desperately against the Omega, and she would be surprised to find that she could hear you again; you seemed to be able to communicate with her through the special bond between you both.
“I’m - I’m okay, Nugget, I promise, just - just focus on your attacker,” she strained out, before managing to punch the Omega in the neck, prompting it to wince, allowing her to look around for a possible weapon, and that was when her gaze fell upon a stick to her right side. “Yes-!” She mustered, before hastily grabbing at it, and before the Omega could try and snatch the stick away, she would manage to hit it across the face with it, prompting it to whimper softly, and whine aloud whilst it drew back from her for a moment, and it was at that moment that you managed to sink your teeth into your own attacker’s neck, allowing you to throw it away from you so you could hastily get up, and lunge at the other Omega that had been attacking Harleen, knocking it down to the ground beneath you whilst you snarled above it, before biting at its neck, and scratching its chest to remove the Crystal within it to prevent its healing process from taking place, instead ensuring its slow and painful death.
You would then turn to Harleen after you glanced toward the Omega you had flung away, and knocked out, before you loped up to her to examine her, and make sure that she was okay; make sure that the Omega that had been attacking her hadn’t hurt her like you feared it might have, before she’d manage to get it off of her, and you had managed to then take it down for her, but you were relieved to find that she seemed to be okay; it hadn’t scratched her, or bitten into her anywhere as you couldn’t see any wounds, and couldn’t smell any blood on her.
‘A-Are you okay?’ You inquired, regardless, and she wouldn’t hesitate to nod hastily whilst she sat up, and smiled lovingly up at you, surprising you; you couldn’t believe she hadn’t run away from you, yet, though you were in your wolf form, looming over her whilst your irises were a bold orange colour, much different from their original colour, but she found she couldn’t be scared of you, or even hate you for what you were; she couldn’t help, but even fall a little deeper in love with you whilst she affectionately lifted her right hand up to your left cheek, prompting you to instantly melt into her touch whilst you smiled warmly back at her, blood rushing to your cheeks beneath your fur, and she couldn’t help, but smirk upon feeling your left cheek heating up beneath her palm, suggesting to her that you were blushing already - she loved the effect she had on you, and seemed to have had ever since you had both first met. ‘I thought you’d be scared of me,’ you admitted dejectedly, and Harley would frown, before hastily shaking her head; she could never be scared of you, ‘look at me, Harleen; I’m not that different from the two we just fought-’
“Yeah, but-.. you can still be good, Y/n,” she reminded you, “you already still are good, like you always have been, and always will be; I know you will, and that’s why I’ll never stop loving you the way I do, now, and always will, I promise, n-no matter what; it’s only you for me, Nugget, even if-.. even if you don’t feel the same way, I will always be here, loving you, because I can’t imagine myself being happy doing anything, but that, even though you can turn into a big hairy dog.”
You would wince, before grinning over at her, and affectionately connecting your forehead to her own in the best way possible, prompting her to smile softly, before she allowed her eyelids to flutter shut whilst she revelled in the moment, and you would then turn back into your human form, thinking about it for a moment, before you leaned forward to delicately connect your lips to her’s, soothing her instantly whilst she melted into the kiss, and would wrap her arms around your waist whilst you returned the embrace, and would giggle softly whilst she playfully eased you down onto the ground, before she passionately, and yet still delicately kissed you following you allowing her to do so, and melting into the kiss whilst you were thinking about how you felt as if you were ready, now, to begin a new life with her - if only it could stay this way forever.
🜸🜚🜸
As soon as she had revealed to you that Max had begun to abuse her, before she had broken up with him, you couldn’t help, but begin planning some form of revenge on him; you couldn’t let him get away with hurting Harleen like that, you just couldn’t, so you were determined to hurt him like he had hurt her, though she appeared to not want you to do so for a reason unbeknownst to you, so you would try and hide your plans from her, not wanting to upset her by having her find out about them, somehow. Ever since you had finally managed to put a plan together, you would try and mentally prepare yourself whilst still trying to act nonchalant in front of Harleen for fear of her finding out, and losing her trust in you, but it seemed you weren’t in as much luck as you thought you would be the day you’d decided to execute the plan, and therefore Max.
Whilst you and Harleen were walking up to the student bar, you would tense up upon noticing Max approaching you both, evidently drunk as he smirked over at Harleen whilst she subconsciously grimaced back at him, wishing he’d just give up, now, and leave you both alone.
“You - You look great tonight, Quinzel,” he slurred, and you would have to try and fight back a growl whilst you protectively hooked your left arm around her waist to ease her closer to your left side gently for fear of him trying to do something to her.
“Thanks, you look awful,” she retorted, and Max would subconsciously scowl back at her, before inching closer as if he were about to try and hit her, and you wouldn’t then hesitate to shove him away from you both whilst you snarled at him, unable to hold it back any longer whilst Harleen winced, and would try and provide comfort to you by wrapping her arms around your waist, soothing you instantly as you melted into her embrace, and would be relieved to feel that your body temperature was decreasing, whilst Harleen would be surprised by how hot your body previously had been, as if it were an inbuilt furnace, but at the same time - now that she knew what you were - it didn’t surprise her as much as she knew it would if she didn’t know about your true identity. “It’s okay, Nugget, I’ve got you,” she cooed gently to further relax you whilst you glared at Max who staggered to get back up off of the ground - what a drunk mess, “just focus on my voice, okay?”
“Y-You’re gonna regret that - both of you,” he concluded, before clumsily walking back through the double doors, and you would then glance back at her, before carefully turning around to wrap your arms around her, and she couldn’t help, but melt into your arms whilst she eased you closer to her, and returned the embrace; she could tell you were still a little shaken up after the encounter, and felt bad for not telling you about what Max had done to her, before, though she occasionally wished she’d never told you, after tonight’s occurrences.
“Wanna go inside, or-?” She inquired, and you would hesitate, evidently nervous, before nodding, and smiling softly over at her whilst she intertwined the fingers of her right hand with the currently trembling fingers of your left one, soothing you again instantly as your fingers seemed to stop trembling as soon as they’d made contact with her soft skin whilst she smiled lovingly back at you.
“I - I would love to,” you managed to answer, prompting her smile to grow as she beamed over at you, glad, as well as excited; she’d never been able to go to the student bar at your and her university before.
“I’m glad,” she replied, before leaning over to delicately kiss your left cheek, leaving you flustered again as you wore a dazed expression on your face, and could feel that you’d so soon begun to blush again, prompting her to giggle, evidently amused by your reaction to her kiss, and you vowed then to make her blush someday, determined to get her back for all the times she’d made you blush before. “Come on - the drinks are waiting for us in there,” she reminded you, and you would wince, before nodding hastily, and rushing into the building with her, but you would soon end up having to flee from it again after you’d had to take down Max hastily after he’d followed Harleen into the women’s toilets as if to attack her, and once he was lying dead on the floor you would falter, finding you couldn’t even look up at Harleen whilst she was leaning heavily against the wall opposite you, her eyes wide with fear, and the small tears that were currently clouding her vision; she couldn’t believe you’d just killed him, after you’d promised her that you wouldn’t hurt him the day before, prompting her heart to sink, and her invading tears to escape upon her realisation that you’d just broken the promise you’d made her, prompting her to wonder if you were prepared to break any of your other promises like how you’d promised her you’d always love her, and how you’d promised her you’d always remain faithful to her, and never leave her side.
“Quinzels, I-..” You then whimpered softly, a pained expression on your face when you noticed the hurt look she was currently sporting; you’d never intended to upset her, you just couldn’t let Max hurt her again, and you’d lost control before you could stop yourself from hurting him any further to the point that you found yourself ridding him of his life entirely. “I’m so sorry, I - I never meant-”
“You promised,” she uttered, her voice briefly trembling, and you would falter, before nodding gravely, and bowing your head; you weren’t sure what to do, or say, to try and fix this; to try and keep her with you, no matter how desperate you were, and always had been, to spend eternity with her, “I guess I should have known you’d lie like that; this was all just-.. too good to be true, as usual-”
“No,” you whined, not wanting her to think that whilst you timidly inched closer to her, “Harleen, I - I swear I-.. I never meant to go that far, I just; he was going to hurt you, a-and I couldn’t let him, I-”
“Save it,” she interjected, “you-.. you really are a monster; I should have realised that, before-.. before I-..” A strained sob would then manage to escape her lips, prompting you to feel even worse, and your heart to somehow sink even further whilst she meandered around you, and fled from the building, needing time alone to think about things for a little while, whilst you began to feel empty, and numb, as if you’d lost everything within you following you losing Harleen, and it was excruciating, prompting you to soon break down a brief moment after she had, before you opened the window within the room, and managed to climb, and push yourself through it, leaving it open to make sure Harleen wouldn’t be blamed for Max’s demise so that they would assume that his killer had fled through the window which you technically were doing, before you ran toward Apocalypse Forest, and changed mid run whilst your tears streamed down your cheeks endlessly, wondering painfully if you’d ever see her again, or had forever lost her.
~-~
It wasn’t long after that moment that Harleen began to regret letting you go, especially whenever she found herself subconsciously passing by your father’s house, only to hear a crestfallen howl sounding out within Apocalypse Forest; she’d never meant to hurt you the way she could tell she had, and wished she’d reacted differently. After she’d been given time to think about what had happened a few days ago now following the moment you had killed Max, she felt guilty upon recalling how frequently he had hurt her, and couldn’t help, but remember how you’d revealed to her that he had been following her most likely with malicious intent, and you had only done what you had to try and protect her to the best of your ability.
And to think on it a little more deeply, she found she couldn’t blame you for losing control; she knew it was hard for you as you’d recently found out, and had been trying to get used to still, your true identity, and that you hadn’t perfected your self control yet, unless you were with her, in which case she seemed to manage to stabilise you, and prevent you from changing whenever your emotions overwhelmed you for whatever reason. She also found she couldn’t blame you for doing what you did, and couldn’t help, but even feel a little flattered by how you’d gone to such a length to her as a result of him abusing her the way he had, and had risked your life, or you getting hurt to protect her from him possibly hurting her again.
It was these reasons that prompted her to - on one of the time’s she had stopped in front of your father’s house at night - try her luck at finding you within the forest, desperate to try and fix things between you both as she was terrified of what her life might be like without you in it - the last few days had already been painful enough, and she found she couldn’t take the pain anymore, longing to be within your arms again, whilst you longed to be within her’s. As soon as she heard you howling again in the same, and even a little more desperate crestfallen and despairing manner, she wouldn’t hesitate to begin running even further into the forest upon realising that you had to be here, somewhere, sounding quite close by.
“Y/n-!” She called, hoping you could hear her, before she faltered upon noticing you in your wolf form, sat upon a boulder with a low demeanour, your head bowed, and ears low whilst you whined quietly, before lifting your head following you hearing her voice, and glancing over in her direction whilst your eyes glinted blissfully, and you would hastily get up, elated to see that she had found you, before your tail began to wag rapidly, and she would smile lovingly over at you, until a gunshot rang out, and you would whine aloud whilst you fell off of the boulder, and onto your right side, feeling quite faint all of a sudden, as well as dizzy. “Y/n, no!” She cried, before running up to you, and falling to her knees beside you whilst she cradled your body close to her’s, tears beginning to cloud her vision; she couldn’t believe you’d just been shot like that, and she then began to silently seethe after a strained sob escaped her lips, before she looked around, and would falter upon noticing a hunter looking figure emerging from the brambles, prompting her to grimace, and hold you even closer to her protectively, confusing, as well as prompting the man to grow suspicious of her as he aimed his gun up at her, but you wouldn’t allow him to hurt her; you couldn’t.
You then - with new determination - got up off of the ground after you’d carefully removed her arms from around you, scaring her as she hastily shook her head, before she got up after you, and would try and hold you back, but you were too quick, lunging at the hunter even after he had managed to shoot you again in the chest, allowing you to knock him down, before you began to maul at his neck, and would only stop until you were sure he was dead, before you staggered backwards, and would glance back at her, appearing weaker than you had ever been before as blood began to pour from your wounds whilst you whimpered softly, limping toward her whilst her tears streamed down her cheeks; she couldn’t believe you’d just been shot twice, and was terrified of what might happen to you if she didn’t try and tend to your wounds, and fast.
“I-.. I shouldn’t have come so late, I’m so sorry,” she mustered shakily whilst she crouched down in front of you, and would affectionately connect her forehead to your’s whilst you shook your head, whimpering softly; you didn’t want her to think she had to apologise to you after what you had done to Max a few days ago, now, “you wouldn’t have been shot; none of this would have happened if-.. if I’d never left the way I did - if I’d reacted differently-”
‘It’s not your fault,’ you contradicted, before gently licking her tears away; you hated seeing her upset like she was, now, wrapping her arms around your neck carefully whilst she tried desperately to keep you stable, and tried not to break down whilst she cried quietly into your fur, wishing she’d never let this happen to you; wishing she’d done things differently to keep you safe, somehow, ‘Q-Quinzels, it’s-.. it’s mine-.. it’s all mine; I killed Max, and I should suffer for it-’
“And why should I care if you killed him? Y’know, I-.. I was doing some thinking recently, and I-.. I’m not mad at you, Nugget; I’m only mad at myself,” she tried to reassure you, and you would appear surprised; you didn’t think she’d forgive you so easily after you’d killed Max in front of her the way you had, “I shouldn’t have been mad at you for Max; he was an asshole - he only ever treated me like shit, a-and seemed to enjoy abusing me whenever he got the chance to, and he was following me, so-.. he most likely was going to try and hurt me again, I mean-.. before we went inside, he - he did say we’d regret you shoving him, remember?”
‘But that doesn’t-.. that doesn’t change the fact that I killed him, and-.. that guy over there; I kill people, Quinzels, I-’
“I’m not changing my mind, Y/n,” she interjected gently whilst she lifted her right hand up to your left cheek blissfully, soothing you instantly whilst you melted into her touch; you’d missed her warmth, more than you’d ever missed anything else, and you hoped you’d never lose her again, somehow, even if you occasionally feared that maybe you still weren’t good enough for her; weren’t in control of yourself enough to ensure her safety around you when she was the one who was stabilising you whenever you both were together like you were, now, keeping you blissfully from losing control of yourself like you were sure you would if she weren’t by your side, “I love you, Nugget, a-and I always will, I promise, I-.. I can’t live without you - that’s all I know, now. I’ve already lost my parents, okay? I-.. please don’t let me lose you, too; are you healing, yet? Please tell me you are, b-because I really can’t do this without you, Y/n-”
‘The Crystal, Harleen, I-.. I think they shot it,’ you admitted dejectedly, and she would falter, a hurt look on her face, before she began to shake her head again subconsciously whilst more tears began to stream down her cheeks; she couldn’t stand the idea of possibly losing you like she was beginning to feel like she was - an excruciating feeling currently looming over the both of you whilst you tried to keep one another calm by making physical contact like you were, now, reminding the other that you were still there with them, ‘I’m so sorry-’
“No,” she whined, “Y-Y/n, you-.. you can’t leave me, not like this, please,” she begged whilst she tried not to break down again, her voice close to a shaky whisper, “there must be something I can do to fix this; s-something I can do to heal you, myself - please, Nugget, tell me what to do, and I’ll do it, I swear; I’d do anything to keep you here with me, so please tell me how to save you, please!”
‘If you saved me, I’d only continue to be a burden on you, you - you understand that, right? You understand that I can’t guarantee your safety, now? Hunters follow me, Harleen; Omegas follow me, all with the intention of hurting me, and they’d hurt you, too, if you decided to save me, and remain to be my mate-’
“I don’t care if they try and hurt me,” she expressed, desperate to keep you with her, no matter what that might mean for you both in the future, “I-.. I just want to be your’s, Y/n, can’t you see that? I don’t want to understand, I want you to stay, so stay, please; tell me what it is I have to do to save you, and keep you with me - there has to be a way-”
‘You can’t save me, Quinzels - without that crystal, I-.. I’m useless; you deserve better than me-’
“You don’t mean that; that isn’t true - you-.. you could never be useless, Nugget, you-.. you having no crystal doesn’t change the way I see you, and how could you ever think something like that? I don’t want some non-existent person better than you, because you’re perfect, Y/n, and nobody could ever be better than you, I know that for a fact; I’ve always known that, even the day I first met you; I knew it could only ever be you for me, and that’s never gonna change, I promise, so please let me help you, Nugget, I - I can’t let you die on me; I just can’t-”
‘It’s too late for me, Harleen, I-..’ You would then falter upon hearing an Omega howling nearby, prompting you to frown, before you glanced back at her sadly, your eyes clouding over with tears alongside her’s; you never thought it would end this way between you both, but you knew there was no way you’d escape the events of today alive, not in the state you currently were in. ‘You can’t save me, now-’
“No, please,” she pleaded, “you can’t do this-”
‘I’m so sorry, but-.. it’s too late for me; it’s gonna take me, but it won’t get to you - you can still be saved, and I’m not letting you die with me-’
Harleen then couldn’t help, but scowl over at you; she couldn’t believe you were giving in so easily, but you knew that if you tried to stay alive long enough to be treated, you would be putting her life at risk, and you couldn’t allow that to happen, not again.
“I hate you!” She cried, and you would falter, but before you could respond, you could hear that the Omega was growing ever closer, and you then wouldn’t hesitate to push her out of the way into a shallow, and relaxed river behind some more brambles, before the Omega roared upon emerging into the clearing, and the last thing she heard of you was you yelping aloud whilst the Omega took you down, and began to tear at your neck and chest to remove your crystal, before she cried out your name shakily, and it was then that she found herself having to run upon noticing you laying limp upon the ground.
🜚
As soon as she’d cried out for you, and had got up out of the river, she would falter upon noticing your body laying limp upon the ground as if you truly were gone, prompting her heart to sink, and a strained sob to escape her lips whilst she shook her head subconsciously, finding she couldn’t move for a moment when she noticed the Omega that had attacked you glare up at her, before it snarled, and bared its teeth at her, but still she couldn’t move, until it suddenly lunged toward her, and she found she could no longer remain still, sprinting as fast as she could back toward the path she’d used to enter Apocalypse Forest in an attempt to escape it, and therefore the Omega, tears silently streaming down her cheeks the whole way; she couldn’t believe she had had to leave you there like that just because of the Omega being there, prompting her to feel guilty for not trying to fight with it to try and get to you, and save you before she could lose you like she felt like she already had, feeling empty and numb all of a sudden once she’d emerged outside of the forest, and allowed her knees to fail beneath her as she collapsed to the ground, not even bothering to look behind her and see if the Omega had followed her, which it had, but luckily it decided to turn around after growling quietly, before it began to lope back toward its pack.
However, she found herself wishing it would come back, not wanting to have to try and live without you again like she had had to for two excruciating weeks following you disappearing upon discovering your true identity, and form.
“No,” she strained out feebly upon hearing its footfalls growing more distant, “no! Come back, and take me, too! I can’t-.. I can’t do this without her-..” She then found she couldn’t take the pain anymore as her face contorted, and she began to break down, sobbing uncontrollably into the palms of her hands, and it was here that she remained until she began to run out of tears - though she knew that if she had more they would continue to stream down her cheeks the way they had been constantly a brief moment ago - and would push herself to get up off of the ground though her entire body was paining her for a reason unbeknownst to her; she found it so hard to move after what had happened; so hard to find the will to keep going after she’d supposedly lost you, until she managed to get to Winter’s dorm within the university you both had been studying it together, remembering that she’d been treated decently by Winter, and not so much by anyone else, but you, not sure who else to talk to as she felt as if she needed to be around someone who could make her feel stable again, though she knew she’d never be able to recover from losing you like she believed she had, and knew that maybe if she had stayed where she was she might never be able to find the strength to pick herself up again, not without you by her side, encouraging her to stay strong, and to keep moving.
Once she felt able, she would timidly knock on the door to Winter’s dorm before her, and it wasn’t long before Winter opened it, and would appear surprised to see her; she didn’t think Harleen would want to come and see her this late; it was almost midnight already, but she would welcome her presence instantly, smiling brightly upon noticing her - she, too, had been harbouring feelings for Harleen recently, and had too been disappointed by seeing her with Max the day they’d both officially got together.
“H-Harleen-? This is - This is a nice surprise,” she mused, “are you okay? W-What are you doing here? Why aren’t you asleep? All the parties would have ended by now-”
“I - I know, I’m sorry, I-.. I just-.. I didn’t know where else to go,” Harleen admitted dejectedly, “I mean-.. I guess I could have gone to my dorm-.. I’ll go; I’m so sorry, I - I should never have intruded, I-”
“Hey, d-don’t go, it’s fine,” Winter cooed, trying to reassure her, and Harleen would hesitate, before expressing relief, and lowering her gaze a little, “wanna come in and talk to me about it-?”
Harleen would then appear alarmed, hastily shaking her head; she found she was terrified of having to relive the moment by revealing it to anyone else, and she also knew that if she told Winter about it, she’d have to reveal to her the existence of werewolves, putting the ones like you in danger, something she knew you’d most likely silently not want her to do, or fear her doing. However, you would only fear her doing so due to how she could be hurt if anyone found out about her association with a werewolf, especially now that she assumed you were gone, and couldn’t protect her, prompting her heart to sink again upon being reminded of how she’d seen your limp body, as if you truly had been killed by the Omega that had attacked you after you’d been shot a couple of times by the hunter you’d killed not too long ago, now.
“No,” she whined, “d-don’t-.. don’t make me do this; don’t make me talk about it, I-.. I don’t ever want to have to talk about it, or have to relive it ever again, I - I can’t-”
Winter would then feel bad for suggesting that she do so, before she tried to provide comfort to her by wrapping her arms around her after she began to cry again, finding she couldn’t stop; everything felt so empty, dark, and miserable whenever you weren’t by her side, and she couldn’t bear it - nor could she bear having to have the picture of your limp body constantly being brought back to her; it was excruciating, and she wasn’t sure how much more she could take of the pain she was currently experiencing.
“Hey, it’s okay,” she further reassured gently whilst she rubbed Harleen’s back using her right hand, trying to soothe her even more, somehow; she didn’t like seeing her upset like she was, now, especially for a reason unbeknownst to her, wondering if something had happened between you and her as she recalled that Harleen and Max had recently broken up, before his body had been found within the women’s toilets in the student bar, and you had gone missing on the same day, and worrying her as she could tell Harleen was going through a lot recently, although at the same time she hoped maybe now she would have a chance with her, “we don’t have to talk about it if you don’t wanna talk about it, just know that I’m here for you, okay? And that I’m always going to be here for you, no matter what.” Harleen would then hesitantly glance up at her, a pained expression on her face; Winter reminded her of you, in a way, and this thought would only make her heart begin to ache even more excruciatingly; she had to get away - run away somewhere, where she wouldn’t have to be reminded of what had happened to you, except at the same time she found she couldn’t move; she just missed you so much, and because Winter was similar to you she found herself wanting to stay where she was at the same time, fearing that Winter was now the only way in which she could be reminded of you, if she truly would never be able to see you again, after what the hunter and Omega had done to you not too long ago, now. “Come in, and sit down for a bit; you need rest,” Winter encouraged, before she guided Harleen inside once she had nodded timidly in response to her suggestion, and would lead her over to the sofa after she’d closed the door, before sitting down beside her after Harleen had managed to bring herself to sit down though she felt as if she should be going back into Apocalypse Forest, and seeing if you were still there; seeing if she could save you, somehow, when little did she know that your aunt, and her pack had found you, and were already rushing you back toward their home to tend to your wounds upon hearing that your heart was still beating faintly, and that you were still breathing barely audibly. “Can I get you anything-? How are you feeling, now?” Winter pried, and Harleen would frown, before bowing her head whilst more small tears slowly ran down her cheeks, before they dropped down onto her currently trembling hands.
“I-.. I don’t know,” she answered feebly, her voice briefly trembling whilst she tried not to break down again, occasionally biting down on her tongue in an attempt to stop her voice from shaking anymore than it already was threatening to, and briefly had a second or so ago, “I don’t even know who I am anymore, Winter, I-.. I feel so lost, and I don’t know what to do anymore-.. what do I do?”
“You don’t have to do anything,” Winter answered, before she timidly held Harleen’s trembling hands within her’s, prompting her to relax a little, though something about this felt wrong to her, and her heart wouldn’t stop aching whilst she glanced up at Winter through her tears, and sore red eyes though they were paining her after her seemingly endless crying sessions following her beginning to believe she had truly lost you despite all that you had both already been through together, and all that you had both done together before the earlier events of today, “just listen to me, okay? I can tell you who you are; where you are, whatever you need to know, Harleen, because-.. I care about you, and I want you to be happy; I’m gonna get you through this, okay? I promise - Quinzel, you-.. you’re honestly the smartest, funniest, prettiest, and bravest woman I know, and you’ll never change in my eyes, no matter what.”
Harleen would then gravely shake her head, before she bowed it again, prompting Winter to frown whilst she found herself trying to fight back tears alongside her; she hated seeing her like this - it was surprisingly painful, especially whenever she thought about how happy Harleen seemed to be, before she’d got with Max, and then you, before he had died, and you had disappeared somehow to someplace unbeknownst to her.
“I’ll never be that me again,” she murmured, “not without-..”
Winter would tilt her head partially upon hearing this, before frowning, and nodding gravely whilst she carefully wrapped her arms around Harleen again whilst she bit down on her bottom lip to try and stop it from trembling, before she returned the hug, and would bury her face into Winter’s left shoulder, not sure what to do with herself anymore now that she believed you to be gone.
“It’ll stop hurting soon, I promise,” Winter cooed whilst she rubbed Harleen’s back again using her right hand, “it won’t feel this way forever, I know it won’t-”
“You don’t understand,” Harleen interjected weakly, her voice briefly trembling again whilst more small tears managed to escape from her stinging eyes, “I love her, Winter, a-and now-.. now I’ll probably never see her again-”
“You don’t know that,” Winter reminded her through gritted teeth upon realising that Harleen was talking about you, “it’s not like she’s gone gone, right?”
Harleen scoffed, before pulling out of the embrace, and bowing her head whilst she fidgeted anxiously with her still quite shaky hands; she was still in shock after what she had seen before she’d come back here.
“You don’t even know half of the situation,” she muttered, “she’s never coming back, Winter-.. she’s-.. she’s gone.” Winter would frown, feeling bad for assuming otherwise though she still wasn’t sure what Harleen meant by you being ‘gone’. “We - We were gonna get married, y’know? We always said-.. We always said we would, before-.. but-.. I guess that’s over, now,” she mused dejectedly, “and I guess I have to live with that, but-.. I don’t know how.”
“It’s like I said before,” Winter began again gently, and Harleen would hesitantly look over at her again though she knew that whatever Winter might suggest to her, things would never be the same again, not without you by her side, “I’m here for you, Quinzel, and that’s never going to change.” She then delicately rested her right hand upon Harleen’s, surprising her, but she would reluctantly accept the action though it felt wrong to her; she felt as if she was betraying you, until she subconsciously grimaced down at the ground when she remembered that you’d chosen ‘death’, over her, when you’d only done so for fear of possibly only burdening her even more than you believed you already had, thinking you could never be good enough for her, and doubting your ability to make her happy, and even if you had chosen to allow her to tend to your wounds, somehow, you knew there was no way you’d let the Omega hurt her; you’d always be willing to give up your life to save her own, no matter what, believing your life was worth nothing, compared to her’s. “I-..” She began again timidly, before she gently turned Harleen’s face so she could inch closer to her, and that was when she felt it again: a pang of guilt; she knew she should be moving away, but she kept trying to remind herself that this would never have happened, if you had tried harder to stay for her, and even tried to remind herself that Winter was similar to you, in a way, just not in appearance; you were both more similar in terms of personality, though Winter didn’t seem to put herself down as much as you tended to, and this thought would prompt Harleen’s heart to sink again upon being reminded that you thought so little of yourself, making her feel guilty, and as if she could have tried to do more for you to try and get you to view yourself the way that she viewed you; everything about you had always been perfect to her, and she knew you would always be the most perfect in her eyes, if only you knew, and could believe her whenever she’d expressed as much around you before she believed she had lost you not too long ago, now, but she would try and hide that she was only paining herself more from Winter by finding she couldn’t stop thinking about you even after she believed she had lost you upon seeing your body laying limp upon the ground most likely half an hour or so ago, now - of course the memory was excruciatingly fresh in her mind; she just didn’t want to hurt Winter or anyone else with it. “I need to tell you something-”
Harleen would then shake her head, before she pushed herself to lean forward to delicately connect her lips to Winter’s, silencing her instantly as she melted into the kiss, and it felt just as wrong as she had thought it would, but she wasn’t sure what to do anymore, and hoped that maybe Winter would be enough to keep her stable from now on now that she believed you to be gone, even though she didn’t feel the same way that Winter did, for her. Once the kiss had ended, Harleen would force a soft smile over at her whilst Winter beamed back at her, her eyes glinting a little, prompting her to feel guilty for what she was doing, for a moment, upon noticing how happy she’d made her by kissing her.
“I - I guess I was right to kiss you, wasn’t I, judging - judging by your reaction?” Harleen mused, her voice close to a whisper, and Winter would nod hastily, trying not to appear flustered whilst she smirked over at her, and would timidly inch closer to her.
“You’re always right, Quinzel,” Winter remarked, before she initiated another kiss, one a little deeper than the first, before Harleen allowed Winter to lower her onto her back whilst they passionately kissed, but all this moment was making her want to do was cry whilst she silently cursed herself for allowing this to happen, but she kept trying to tell herself that it was okay; that you’d want her to be happy, especially when you had made the decision that you had earlier to give in for her, believing that you’d never make her as happy as you thought anyone else could, not that she could tell she was happy anymore, at all, and no matter how many times she and Winter may have fooled around that night, she believed nothing could ever make her happy again, until after she’d finally graduated from med school, eventually began a life of crime, and became Harley Quinn.

My blank/free verse haiku for today based around the next writing instalment/prompt I will be dropping tomorrow at some point:
!TW: Elements of self-doubt + self put-down(s), implied suffering from depression + anxiety + separation anxiety - if I’ve missed any, let me know ❤️!
How could she love me?
Of course I was elated;
I’d always loved her,
And forever would,
But it seemed impossible;
A perfect being -
The most beautiful -
Infatuated with me?
A gnarly monster?
An unlikely match,
But why did it feel perfect?
My lips, heart, body -
They all seemed to fit;
All matched perfectly with her’s,
So why did it end?
How could I lose her?
~~~~~
Hope you enjoyed it! ❤️
