The STENDEC Mystery solved?
I love research. I’m pretty much obsessed with it.
Today I was idly making notes for my fictional work and I found myself scrawling the word ‘Pathfinder’ in pencil in one of my many small notebooks. It’s a term that I rather like and may use - I knew I had heard it before but couldn’t place it.
A little Google magic brought me with sinuous twists and turns to the fascinating story of the disappearance of a plane called Star Dust over the Andes in 1947.
Bear with me - it’s a fascinating tale and I believe I may have solved the mystery attached to the Star Dust and it’s disappearance. Hey- it was a slow writing day today. So….
Star Dust was an Avro Lancaster. Based on the Lancaster bomber - itself an absolute legend of WW2, it was capable of speeds of up to 310 mph and altitudes of 20,000 feet.
This plane was the future of long distance commercial flight. The pilot, Reginald Cook had been an elite RAF Pathfinder during WW2.
So that’s where it came from. Pathfinder. Like it, but the story gets better….promise.
Continuing with my indulgence of this little mystery - I discovered that the passenger list read like a bad spy novel. This intrigued me, naturally.
A German woman returning to Chile barely two years after the war with her husbands ashes. Two businessmen friends seeking new South American ventures. A Palestinian business man- rumoured to have a large diamond sewn into the lining of his jacket. An agent for Dunlop tyres who had once been tutor to Prince Michael Of Romania… And most thrilling of all….a Kings Messenger from the war office with important documents for the British Embassy in Chile.
None of them would make it to their final destination.
Stardust sent a message giving an Estimated Time of Arrival in Santiago of just FOUR MINUTES - then they sent the word ‘STENDEC.’
The controller at Santiago did not recognise this signal and asked Star Dust to repeat.
Twice more the enigmatic and seemingly meaningless word STENDEC was received…in very quick and clear succession.
Then… Nothing. The plane vanished. Not a trace of it was ever found, despite relentless air searches.
In this time many surreal theories were put forward - that STENDEC was some alien contact sign….That the planes radio controller meant to write ‘Descend’ but was struck with a temporary and paralysing dyslexia.
A Spanish UFO magazine even named themselves STENDEK in homage to the unsolved mystery.
Then in 2000 the Rolls Royce engine was found, 50 miles off from Star Dust’s calculated ‘4 mins eta’ … on Mount Tupungato.
A glacier had swallowed the plane in an avalanche and then over 50 years later - with glacial movements- had begun to release parts of the plane and a few small and mummified human remains.
Mystery solved. Except it wasn’t.
Why did the plane crash and what was STENDEC?
The answer has eluded everyone.
I believe I have the answer…and it’s not UFO’s.
Whilst researching the story I made a mistake. A simple error. I misspelled STENDEC in my search bar - I spelled it as SENDEC.
Ironically the radio controller on the Star Dust made the same mistake.
SENDEC then appeared in my search as the brand/company name for aviation tachometers and altimeters.
I believe the pilot was sending a warning. As soon as he realised that the SENDEC gauges had failed him and given him the wrong ETA, the wrong altitudinal readings and caused him (an experienced WW2 pilot- a hero.) to crash the Star Dust straight into Mount Tupungato - he sent STENDEC. STENDEC. STENDEC. Not once, but three times. Sadly it was mis-tapped.
There is no exclamation point in Morse Code, so I think we can see why it was sent repeatedly!
Attempting to tap out ‘Tachometer’ or ‘Altimeter’ under pressure in the Morse message with any success would have been unlikely. They were about to crash into a mountain! So they used the faster ‘STENDEC.’ Denoting the manufacturers name of the equipment that failed them.
But the warning was not translated. Even though it’s sort of obvious that he meant SENDEC - was this due to ignorance or some deeper deceit? Who knows- sabotage was considered.
Is it nothing more than a deeply tragic coincidence that two further Avro Lancaster planes - the Star Tiger in 1948 and the Star Ariel in 1949 also crashed - barely two years after the Star Dust? Both planes also flown by ex RAF Pathfinders and ‘vanished’ with all passengers and crew…
BUT those two planes happened to vanish over a certain
area in the Atlantic, off Bermuda. In fact the disappearance of these two planes kick-started the myth of The Bermuda Triangle!
It seems stranger than fiction doesn’t it?
Were gauges giving false readings? Were the gauges sabotaged? Was there some external electrical force of nature at work? Who knows…
I leave that mystery up to you.
For the savvy Sherlocks amongst you I have no idea how the information of the Palestinian man with the diamond sewn into his pocket got out. In fact how anyone had knowledge of this diamond is the only mystery that now remains. Personally I think it could be a ‘red herring.’ Anyone with any other information or tech info regarding the Avro Starfleet Lancaster conversion, please get in touch…. Shameless dilettante ...
Excuse the recent flurry of art postings- my obsessional, never ending dream of finishing TPN continues unabated but a recent and unexpected death in the family triggered my painting and drawing reflexes. In the absence of words…
As it stands I now have eight canvasses in work and preliminary sketches for several more. I am riding this wave for now. As if I have any choice in the matter….
