Some key differences between Netflix’s and ADV’s release of Neon Genesis Evangelion

Last night I watched 5 episodes (1,2,8,23,24) of Evangelion on Netflix with the new English dub. As someone who has seen the entire series at least 10 times with the original ADV dub, the small incremental changes build up enough to discourage me from watching the rest of the episodes.

I realize that currently everyone is hating on the new dub but I felt like I needed to write something as a way to organize my thoughts and pin down exactly what bothers me about it. I don’t blame the voice actors, who do just fine with what they’re given in the script. I dealt with the cast changes before between TV to End of Evangleion to the new Rebuild movies. Some worked for me and some didn’t.

But at the same time, I’m very attached to that original cast and the emotional response I had to their performances. So I’ve tried to focus on things besides line delivery or how well I think a new voice matches my idea of a character.

I understand as well the difficulty in not just translating Japanese, but adapting a show as difficult as Evangelion. But in some cases, the changes to the script affect how a joke plays or break the viewer’s (or at least my) immersion.

“Big boy”

In episode 1 and 8, the word “big boy” is used and it seems like a strange word choice. In episode 1, after Shinji breathes in LCL for the first time, here are the lines:

Netflix English subtitles:

Shinji: This is so gross

Misato: Deal with it! You’re a big boy!

Netflix English audio:

Shinji: This is so gross

Misato: Just deal with it! Come on, be a big boy!

ADV Platinum DVD audio:

Shinji: “I’m gonna be sick”

Misato: “Stop complaining! You’re a boy you know?!”

Just for reference, the Japanese word used here according to the Netflix Japanese subtitles is 男の子 (Otoko no ko). jisho.org defines this as boy; male child; baby boy.

To be honest, until I looked it up, I remembered this line being “You’re a man, aren’t you?” in the original dub. They may say that at some other point in the show. But I think there’s still room for criticism even if the difference is just “boy” vs “big boy”.

When I hear “big boy”, it seems like something that would be directed at someone much younger than Shinji at 14 years old. It’s the kind of phrase you typically hear, contrasted with the word “baby”. Like if a 6 year old boy was crying and their mother is trying to get them to stop, saying “You’re not a baby anymore, you’re a big boy, so you need to stop.” The word “big” implies there is a “little” version of boy that you don’t want to be associated with and in my mind that “little boy” is a baby. “Big boy pants” can also be used to imply a male who has recently moved beyond diapers to regular underwear.

“Boy” just by itself lets you focus more on that Misato is implying he’s whining like a girl.

Personally, I find the dilemma between behavior that is associated with boy vs girls a lot more interesting than just Shinji being scolded because he’s acting too young. Of course, as I say that, I hear Gendo’s line from the Rebuild movies “Shinji, you need to grow up.” So the two aren’t mutually exclusive. But there’s still a lot in Evangelion that focuses on gender roles and characters that don’t necessarily fit into one spot easily.

Even if “big boy” is a more accurate translation, I think it would’ve made more sense to English speakers or at least Americans if they had just used “boy” in that particular situation.

Kaji and Shinji

After watching episode 1 and 2, I skipped to episode 8 Asuka Strikes. A little into the episode, there’s a scene with Misato, Kaji, Shinji, and everyone else at a table. Kaji tries to play footsie under the table with Misato but is rebuffed. Kaji then turns to Shinji and asks how Shinji likes living with Misato.

Netflix English subtitles:

Kaji: She used to flop around in her sleep. She still do that?

Netflix English audio:

Kaji: Does she still make a fool of herself, when she’s sleeping?

ADV Platinum DVD audio:

Kaji: “Tell me something, is she still so, wild in bed?”

ADV Platinum Subtitle:

Kaji: So, does she still toss and turn in bed?

Given that the subtitles from Netflix and ADV match up, it appears that this would be the more “accurate” way of saying this line. The way those are written, the joke is still implied that Shinji and Misato are sleeping together and having sex, but it’s somewhat subtle.

The Netflix English audio comes out not as clear and leads to everyone’s dramatic “WHATTTT??!!” after Kaji’s line becoming slightly confusing. This first time I heard it, I didn’t really get what Kaji was saying. There’s just something about the delivery or that pause where the comma is throws it off just enough. The phrase “make a fool of herself” also isn’t something I hear often or ever when referring to sleeping.

I can definitely understand Netflix not wanting to change this line as much as ADV did.

However, I think this deadpan line followed by the huge reaction from the others in the room works best when you take it to the extreme like the ADV audio. The shock from the others is driven not just from Kaji’s implication, but how overt he is with it.

Other little things

On Screen Text

One of the first things I noticed is that the English subtitles do not translate all text that appears on screen. In 2019, it’s unfortunately rare that you get everything translated like you did with the ADV release of Evangelion. Misato’s letter to Shinji, the bottle of toothpicks hiding Shinji’s penis, and even the Japanese episode titles go untranslated. There are a few that appear like Shinji’s transfer application and Gendo’s “COME” on the letter to Shinji. So it’s hard to tell if this was a stylistic choice or just coming down to lines per dollar it would cost.

Fly Me To The Moon

I know everyone else has already complained about this, but I haven’t seen a lot of why it’s important. Obviously there’s the connection between Rei and the moon and because it’s part of the original work of art. But more than that, it’s that extra unique twist to differentiate it from other anime. You watch the cliffhanger in Episode 1 and it just ends with a song most people associate with Frank Sinatra.

I don’t remember how I felt when I first heard it, but I do remember how I felt when I heard “Roundabout” by Yes in Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure. The contrast really caught my attention and got my mind thinking, “Wow they are really using this song right now. I’m more curious about where this show is going to lead.” In part, that reaction was probably driven by my mind first connecting it to Evangelion’s ending.

This time around, maybe people would’ve associated it with Jojo and it might’ve kept a few more people watching. In the end, those few extra viewers clearly weren’t worth it to Netflix especially when the next episode is triggered right as the credits role.

Lines that cut off

I don’t remember exactly where in the episodes these lines are. But there were several times where a line someone was saying would abruptly end. I think one time was when Shinji said “K”, as in like “Okay”, but it sounded like the audio had been cut too closely and didn’t fade out like it naturally would as someone was saying it.

Pronunciations

The way characters pronounce things has changed dramatically in some cases. It’s hard to tell if this is directing or actors saying it this way. Given its consistency, it seems more like how they were directed. SEELE, usually say-lay in ADV is now Zee-la for Netflix. Fuyutsuki’s name is weirdly broken up as Fu-Yu-Tsuki, with more of a pause between fu, yu, and tsuki, which makes it feel less like one word that flows. I can live with all that, but I really can’t stand Lance of Longinus.

In ADV, it was typically, lon-juh-nus. In Netflix, it’s lon-jai-nus. If I’m reading the pronunciation correctly from Wikipedia, Netflix is saying the word correctly in English, while the ADV pronunciation is closer to the Japanese pronunciation. The problem is I couldn’t stop thinking about how much it sounded like vagina, which sounds like more of a personal problem.

At the end of the day, I think it’s great that more people have access to Evangelion. I hope that people enjoy it as much as I have and can get something out of it. But at the same time, I feel like Netflix aiming for more of a middle ground approach, in terms of script and emotional intensity, might cause the show to stick out less than it could’ve.

Sure the content is all the same, but it doesn’t feel like it flows as well. People get mad when you don’t match the Japanese exactly. But if you try to match it exactly, it can become unintelligible to English speakers. So maybe this was always a no win scenario.

I hate to come off as one of those butt-hurt fans who hates anything new and only wants more of the same. Personally, I enjoy the new path that the Rebuild movies are taking. I don’t think the original show needs to be remade like Sailor Moon Crystal. It’s only because of that deep connection with the original dub that I’m worried people watching the new dub won’t connect as deeply with the show.

From now on there will always be that question when I ask someone if they’ve seen Evangelion. They will more than likely say “Yes I saw it on Netflix.” Then if they say “it was okay,” I’ll always be thinking, “Would they have liked it more with the ADV dub?”

Nepal bans all private Indian channels for ‘broadcasting false propaganda’ against its Prime Minister

Kuala Lumpur, 12 July 2020: The Nepal government has banned transmission of all private Indian TV channels this Thursday after accusing them of ‘broadcasting objectionable propaganda’ against its Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli, except the state-run Indian channel Doordarshan - which is still allowed to broadcast in the country.

According to media reports, tensions started between two countries when the Nepalese parliament approved a new map in June that includes territories claimed by India, namely Lipulekh, Limpiyadhura and Kalapani.

The decision came several days after the Indian news channel Zee Hindustan aired a report, hinting towards close ties between Oli and the Chinese ambassador in Nepal.

The Kathmandu post, a Nepalese newspaper, has published an editorial on Friday, criticizing the Indian channels for broadcasting false propaganda against Oli.

It says, “Sitting in their [New] Delhi or Mumbai studios, they do not hesitate to announce the date and time of Oli's resignation, some of them even asking him to step down. Oli, it seems, is the new enemy they must fight each day to garner higher television rating points for themselves.”

Nepal’s former Deputy Prime Minister Narayan Kaji Shrestha has said that the Indian channels “must stop the baseless propaganda” which has “crossed all limits’.

The other grounds cited in the media for blocking the Indian channels include propagating Islamophobic views and anti-Muslim sentiments and targeting the Muslim community for spreading the coronavirus pandemic.

Nepal has a small minority of Muslims, who make up about 4% of the Nepalese population.

Sacred Beasts 2

“Sissy” always pissed me off as a nickname for your sister. It’s clearly meant as a term of endearment in some cases, but it also is the equivalent of “wuss”, y’know???

I’ve seen mushroom soup out of a tin…that don’t look like mushroom soup in that case.

Uh, random question…she has th same surname as Will, but is Schaal herself adopted???

Y’should’ve followed Hank, Nancy…(is her name Nancy or Schaal? Schaal is her middle name, yet she seems more commonly referred to as Schaal…hmm.)

*sees synopsis* - No one mentioned Nancy’s hometown was called Livletwood Village…

I pause my shows a lot to get down these notes…then Crunchyroll or my internet (or both!) cursed me with regular buffering (that can sometimes play video and subs through it, but generally sets down a few seconds after unpausing and lasts for a minute) and made it a pain in the butt to make these notes. But you do realise I basically have notes for almost every show I’ve ever watched under this system? These notes are special to me, which is why I put up with the buffering. It also means impactful scenes lose their impact, meaning well-paced shows get favoured in my picking process on CR these days.

Another counterintuitive name for a sequel anime season…this is my last premiere before I wrap them up, or at least until Machikado Mazoku (or whatever) land on CR.

…and of course, it’s back to Big Boobies (aka Hestia). She’s probably the worst part of the show for me.

Why does Bell need an advisor anyway…? I never thought about it when watching s1.

Who’s this Naza-sama, anyway…?...Okay, it seems she’s a doctor from the Miach Familia. I don’t remember her from s1, really.

I’ve forgotten who Asfi is as well…Oh yeah, that blue-haired woman from the Hermes Famlia. Hermes seems like a bit of a loose cannon – the sort who wouldn’t have a Familia if given the chance – though.

I think we saw Freya in s1…just scheming behind the scenes…

Hermes looks like a sleazebag half the time he’s on screen…

I forgot how much I loved Miach’s character design in s1...and to a lesser extent, Takemikazuchi.

I didn’t think Tanjiro was scared of anything…excpt maybe losing Nezuko again.

Oh! I just realised Natagumo has a hint in its name…The “gumo” can be read “kumo”…as in cloud or spider, but it’s given with the kanji for spider so it can only be a spider-related problem on Mt Natagumo.

I’d hate to have Smellovision on this show…(What’s Smellovision, you ask??? Here, read up on it…at least, I was thinking of the Google variant, so read up on the Google version.)

Ukogi appears to be a type of plant known as eleutherococcus and ukogi rice is rice with ukogi leaves.

Given this is a BL/yaoi (no pun intended), I think Akihiko and Haruki should pair up…but maybe I’m just going nuts with the shipper glasses here.

Aye…I relate, Mafuyu. When you’re younger, you can beg your parents for money, but equipment, books etc. really costs some hard cash. (But still, I think the more I watch and see Haruki in action, the more I like him. Not necessarily as a husbando, but more in the sense of that one cool dude you gravitate towards.)

This episode’s titlecard only has a wave pattern…I probably know what the pattern is called, but I’ve…probably forgotten that name.

Hey, a Demon Slayer girl! (My standards seem to have been lowered in regards to seeing gals in leading or even supporting roles…It’s more acceptable for Demon Slayer, given its historical setting, but still, how sad it is to not see many girls…)

(TW: abuse) Why…for some reason, this feels like an abusive household, specifically where the father does evil things to the mother…but this time, the son’s part of the problem.

I find it funny Zenitsu just calls Inosuke “Wild Boar”. To be fair though, I don’t think Inosuke introduced himself to Zenitsu, way back when they were meant to.

This scene where Zenitsu is crying and has his back turned to the “camera”…they clearly used a CGI model for him.

Pemerintah Tak Ganti Nama Laut China Selatan Jadi Laut Natuna Utara

MALANGTODAY.NET - Menteri Koordinator Bidang Kemaritiman Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan menegaskan pemerintah tidak mengganti nama Laut China Selatan menjadi Laut Natuna Utara yang memicu kritik dari China. "Perubahan peta sebenarnya yang di daerah kita saja yang kita kaji. Tidak mengganti 'South China Sea' (Laut China Selatan) itu. Tidak," katanya seusai membuka Kongres Teknologi Nasional 2017 seperti dilansir dari Antara, Senin (17/07). Luhut mengatakan pemutakhiran peta wilayah Negara Kesatuan Republik Indonesia (NKRI) dilakukan khusus di dalam zona ekonomi eksklusif (ZEE) sepanjang 200 mil laut dan landas kontinen. "Di dalam zona 200 mil laut itu yang sedang kita kaji," tuturnya. Namun, Luhut enggan berkomentar lebih lanjut terkait respon China atas penamaan Laut Natuna Utara untuk mengganti Laut China Selatan yang mengganggap perubahan nama laut itu tidak masuk akal dan tidak sesuai standar penyebutan wilayah internasional. "Nanti kita lihat," ucapnya, singkat. Sebelumnya, pemerintah resmi memutakhirkan peta wilayah NKRI dengan menitikberatkan perbatasan laut Indonesia dengan negara lainnya. "Jadi supaya ada satu kejelasan atau kesamaan antara landas kontinen dengan kolom air di atasnya, jadi tim nasional sepakat agar kolom air itu disebutkan sebagai Laut Natuna Utara," ungkapnya. Sesuai peta lama Indonesia edisi 1953, keterangan mengenai Laut China Selatan itu hampir mendekati wilayah Laut Jawa. "Jadi ujung laut Jawa yang berbatasan dengan Selat Karimata itu pada 1953 masih dalam klasifikasi Laut China Selatan," katanya. Namun, karena peta 1953 itu merupakan dokumen lama, maka pemerintah terus melakukan pemutakhiran (update) dengan memasukkan dan memberikan nama baru di sejumlah wilayah Nusantara. Penamaan Laut Natuna sendiri, lanjut dia, sebelumnya juga telah ditetapkan pada 2002, kendati sejak 1970-an eksplorasi migas di sana telah menggunakan nama Natuna Utara. Havas mengatakan Indonesia memiliki kewenangan untuk memberikan nama wilayah di wilayah teritorial Tanah Air. Ada pun untuk kepentingan pencatatan resmi secara internasional dapat dilakukan melalui forum khusus pencatatan nama laut, yakni International Hydrographic Organization (IHO).

i tried to focus on differentiating their body types this time. sometimes i feel like i let them drift too close together, esp if i've been drawing characters alone frequently

Keeper of ancient technology and "looking at screens" enthusiast

Though talkative and friendly, Zee is often dismissive of others - perhaps naively so, as she appears ignorant of the inherent danger of her situation. She tends to disregard the intentions of others unless she considers them an "interesting person." Conversely, Zee considers herself stable, rational, and uninteresting… whether or not any of those descriptors are actually accurate is certainly debatable. She is curious and intelligent with a wide range of interests, but she quickly becomes frustrated when she can't grasp something immediately. Sorcery in particular has been difficult for her, much to her chagrin. Zee is easily annoyed in general, tends to take things personally, and can be rather petty and vain. She often appears to do things simply for novelty. Zee enjoys luxuries and style and is willing to be a criminal accomplice to sustain her lifestyle.

Zee Kaji is from Lantern Island, a land cloaked in eternal fog and the closest modern settlement to the ruins of Old Perakami. Her parents were both sorcerers, a path they discouraged her from following, but one she eventually ended up on, anyways. Zee grew up with a comfortable lifestyle in a mid-size town and excelled in school, though she often found herself bored by her surroundings. She is fascinated by the lost technology of the Perihelion Era, often going off on her own to scavenge for forgotten relics. A few years ago, she found the remains of an ancient airship. A mechanic by trade, she was eventually able to restore it to a functional state. However, some of its features would not work without the use of sorcery, so Zee set off for the infamous ethereal volcano Meruyi and the infamous Luminiferous Guild of Sorcerers.

Her presence on the island is not as clear-cut as it seems, though. She claims the ship she found communicates with her and tells her where to go and what to look for. It isn't a secret per se, but the subject doesn't come up in conversation very cleanly. When it is mentioned, she is almost disturbingly casual about it, even when people don't believe her. She is very opaque about the details of the messages she receives.

Typically, Zee does not participate directly in combat or exploration. She has a small drone that she uses to scout out areas for the others and provide light combat support in the form of, like, lasers or whatever. She often finds jobs and information for the group by trawling sorcerer netscape the astral network.

miscellaneous skills and hobbies

Meridian - likes fashion and styling outfits. learned a couple traditional dances for ritual purposes. can handle a small rowboat - all of the roads in kalirangka were waterways - and likes to venture out on their own. has gotten good at quad skating, which they use to train their movements with their weapon.

Ivrel - uhhh. smoking weed and hanging out!! ivrel doesn't really have a dedicated hobby aside from dueling, but she'd probably benefit from one. knows how to trick rope and tie a lot of different knots and catch lizards of various shapes and sizes.

Tjong - previously spent almost all of his effort fighting and making his weapons. initially just sits in the lobby doing nothing when he doesn't have a task, but gains extensive knowledge on stocks by osmosis from the tv in there. gets really into investing. can play gong ageng in a gamelan ensemble.

Vita - clearly knowledgeable about gardening and foraging. reads a lot of mystery novels and tries to guess how they'll end. does like 10000 piece puzzles but tends to lose some of the pieces. decent enough photographer... the main skill she's honed is taking pics without people noticing 🤫

Audrist - glass artist obvs (mainly stained glass) but also does resin work. can sketch things from life pretty accurately. combs the beach for sea glass. knows some street magic type sleight of hand tricks. tries to do yoga to keep himself limber.

Zee - gamer(tm). plays the theremin and has enough musical knowledge to make her own simple songs. the only one of them who can sing in any capacity. good at doing makeup and hair. terminally online. is absolutely the group's brand manager.

Vita's extra body part should have always been an eye????? It literally relates to her power?? why didn't I do that in the first place. also I miss her old style of hat, but I had to tilt it up to keep her antennae showing.

8. Were there expectations placed on your OC when they were growing up? Have they lived up to those expectations?

Yup, but they were pretty modest... and therein lies the problem. Her parents didn't want her to get involved in anything dangerous - especially not sorcery. Of course, they encouraged her in academic ventures, but they never forced her into anything. She simply went along because she was good at it. Zee could've easily gotten a profitable day job and a nice house, but that's boring! She was hardly out of college when she started to feel dissatisfied with her career.

11. What was your OC scared of as a child? Are they still scared of that?

Most importantly, Zee has been scared of death since she was old enough to really comprehend such a thing.

She's still scared of death, but she sure doesn't act like it. Zee usually acts like its not even a possibility - I guess that's how she copes with it. Her fear of blood, gore, and medical things has always been prevalent, but of course it also ties into her fear of death.

13. Does your OC have any siblings? What was their relationship with their siblings growing up? If they were an only child, did they want siblings?

She has an older sister. They had a close relationship growing up, but it started to sour once Zee reached her teens. Zee's sister thinks she's irresponsible and immature, causing worry for their parents for no real reason. We'll probably see her sister in one of the later arcs, but I haven't really fleshed her out yet.

5. What’s one hill your OC will die on (anything from a guiding moral position to a strong opinion about combining mint and chocolate)? (Reynardine)

Winning something is always more satisfying than buying it. People have tried to buy relics off of him, but he won't sell, even for exorbitant prices. Either play the game or fuck off.

15. How does your OC take up space? What do they do with their hands when they talk, or how do they sit in chairs? (Reynardine)

Renny is usually pacing around unless he's got something particular to examine. He'll be tapping his fingers or fiddling with something in his hands. When he wants to make sure his hands are still (or at least that no one is looking at them moving), he'll hold them behind his back. His tail is always idly swishing around, never too stiff or too frantic.

He's about 6'2", and he'll bend down whenever he talks to someone shorter. Don't be mistake, though - he'll always make it quite clear that he is bending. Although he's naturally inclined to cross his legs while sitting, he stops himself from doing it front of other people. He tries not to slouch while sitting around others, either. Maybe the reason he's always moving around is because he's more self-conscious about his appearance while he's still.

But he's always still when he's playing a betting game. It's almost kind of unsettling, the way his demeanor changes entirely. Normally, Reynardine demands attention, but he loathes to have other people's eyes on him while he's playing. Ironically, the only time he's uncomfortable with the attention his horns garner is the time when he's most likely to use his power. No point in removing them, though, because it'd be even more jarring if they grew back out on the spot.

13. How do they deal with pain (physical or emotional)? (Zee)

Her pain tolerance isn't anything special, but she'll try her damnedest to just keep going about her day. Maybe with more complaining. Or a little treat, because that will make things better, obviously. If there's blood involved, she's probably more freaked out about how gross it is than the way it actually feels. She can't stand the idea of infection, though, so she'll clean and wrap whatever it is immediately.

I think Zee is a little emotionally immature. She's not prepared at all to deal with anything 'serious,' even though she's intentionally placed herself in a volatile situation. If something terrible did really happen... well, I guess we'll see :)
