I've seen people remark on how awkward the 1967 scene is and that is so frustrating because, for me, it is one of the most emotionally resonant flashbacks in the entire series. It is so multifaceted and ripe with implication and that assertion is baffling. As though just because this conversation appears to be hard for them, it must mean that there has to be some sense of weirdness or awkwardness between them?
This scene feeds heavily into my theory that 1941 ended in some sort of aborted romantic moment between the two, most likely initiated by Crowley. Aziraphale can barely stand to look at Crowley because the very first moment he looks him in the face, he can't stop himself from giving him this hooded eyes, barely contained look of longing.
Tumblr media
The next thing we see is Aziraphale immediately launching into a statement about his fear for Crowley's existence that is as brutally sincere as it is heartrending. His eyes are wide, his voice is heavy with emotion, and it's clear that he is terrified beyond belief to lose Crowley. Even as he acquiesces and gives him the holy water, you can see that he wants to take it back and deny him it all over again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then, of course, Crowley asks if he can give him a lift, which is definitely something that they both know is a totally different question than what lies on the surface, given that they're mere feet from the bookshop and at first Crowley frowns so deeply that it's almost cartoonish but a moment after Aziraphale turns him down you get this glimpse of very real sadness:
Tumblr media
Aziraphale sees it for what it is and in an attempt to comfort him, without being able to do what currently seems impossible to him, shares a fanciful but resigned fantasy about spending time together unbothered and unrestrained, all to the tune of these tight little, loving smiles:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When he asks again, you can just see Crowley's desperation for Aziraphale not to go. It's hard to say how long they'd been apart, but it's safe to say that for them, that previous interaction likely is very fresh in their minds.
Tumblr media
Aziraphale has always been more fearful than Crowley when it comes to their feelings for each other. You could even potentially look at the holy water as a metaphor for their relationship. In his expressions of concern about The Arrangement, Aziraphale has always been remarking on how Crowley could be destroyed, similarly to his words here. So when he's telling him, "You go too fast for me, Crowley," what he's really saying is, "I'm terribly afraid and I'm not ready to take that step if it means that I could lose you." And it's plain to see by the wistful look on his face that it pains him greatly to say it:
Tumblr media
The scene so quickly cuts to Crowley looking intensely at the holy water after Aziraphale has left the car (as if trying to convince you that that was the real point of the scene) that it's easy to miss this devastated expression on Crowley's face:
Tumblr media
There's no look of perceived rejection on his face. Just a somber look of resignation. There are so many barriers in front of them, and I think that Crowley was willing to risk it but understood that Aziraphale wasn't ready to.
This is the most honest and laid bare we ever see these two be when it comes to their emotions. There's so much being said without being said and even their actual words (i.e. Crowley remembering exactly the amount of time when the 'fraternizing' conversation happened) are so full of emotion that it might even be a bit hard for some people to watch.
It's not awkward. It's just that the scene is just so incredibly earnest and heavy with coded language that it's easy to be swept up by the fact that the two aren't engaged in their typical banter and bickering. What we truly have here is an incredibly difficult and loving conversation between two people who are stuck in a seemingly impossible situation.

David and Michael in the interview with Ali Plumb for BBC Radio 1 from 10th July 2023 (x) :).
AP: Do you get fans in the street quoting lines or just pointing and staring?
Michael: Well, I get a lot of 'To the world'.
David: Oh, yes. Nice.
Michael: People like to… yeah.
David: Yeah.
Michael: And 'You go too fast, Crowley.'
David: Ooh.
Michael: There's a lot of that.

Sometimes, I'll be writing (or even reading) a fic, and a very cliche or way too romantic line will come out of me and I pause for a second, contemplating whether or not "they'd actually say that".
Then I remember that the beings I'm writing said fanfiction about are Anthony "No Nightingales" Crowley and Aziraphale "You go too fast for me" Fell and I'm like- yes, those bitches are extra af. They would say that. And more.

Aziraphale's crisis of Faith
Tumblr media
So this scene has always been the one that gave me goosebumps from Good Omens. Even from the first time I saw S1, it properly took my breath away. But for a long time, I felt like I was missing something.
Of course we know that when Aziraphale says: “You go too fast for me Crowley” he isn’t talking about the car. He is talking about something else. And I think a lot of us immediately jumped to the idea that Crowley was pushing their relationship faster than Aziraphale was willing to go.
But it doesn’t feel like the whole picture, because well we know Aziraphale does do a lot for their relationship. He literally sets up an embassy of Heaven so they can hang out (his bookshop). He almost gets himself decapitated so he can invite Crowley out for crepes. He puts on a whole magic show to get Crowley off the hook. Sure he might have been scared by the fact that Hell managed to get a photo of them together, but that still didn’t quite fit the line.
Then I realised if you take all of S2 into account, it’s not about Crowley pushing their relationship too fast, it’s about Aziraphale having a crisis of Faith.
Take the lighting in this scene. Most of the time to show that Crowley and Aziraphale are on 'their side', they tend to be lit one half dark/one half light.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
BUT in this scene Aziraphale is almost entirely in the dark.
Tumblr media
He is nervous and twitchy, and when he hands over the Holy Water he knows what statement he is making. He is the one pushing their relationship to another level. He is showing Crowley that he will go against what he believes “I haven’t changed my mind” to show how much he cares about him.
He hands him it in a flask made out of his own tartan. When Crowley offers him a lift, he says: “Maybe one day we will go for a picnic or dine at the Ritz”. He is saying that some part of him hopes and believes there is a future where they can be together.
My theory is that “You go too fast for me Crowley” is basically Aziraphale saying, for them to take it to the next level he has to give up his Faith. Crowley is pushing Aziraphale to reconsider what it is to be an Angel, to go against Heaven, to actually renounce it.
And Aziraphale is saying: “Maybe one day I will, I’m just not there yet”. But that’s huge, because Aziraphale is literally saying one day I might give this all up for you.
Then I saw the script notes for that scene in S1, and in the bit that was cut you see him with a Halo that is switching on and off. They also nearly put Everyday in this bit, which feels like an analysis for another day. But it does suggest the start of something.
I think that something happened between 1941 and 1967 which pushed Aziraphale to question his Faith, but he’s just not ready yet.
Tumblr media
Which then makes the last 15 minutes of S2 even more brutal, because Crowley really believed that Aziraphale was ready. That he was willing to give it all up. And the shot of Crowley waiting by the Bentley parallels that scene in S1, because Aziraphale could go take the lift with Crowley or he can walk back out into Heaven.
Tumblr media
But here’s the thing, you look at Aziraphale’s face. I don’t think he is fully on board with Heaven anymore. And guess what, the lights on that elevator sure look like they are blinking on and off to me.

on one hand, i don’t really want aziraphale and crowley to have sex because as a person who has realized that they are way more ace than they thought and apparently being horny is a “Real Thing” and not just played for laughs, i really, really, desperately need good queer (or really any) relationships to show what it is to be in love without relying on sexual attraction because it reminds me that i am still capable of a love that transcends bodies to pierce the flesh of the soul without feeling the need for physical intimacy, and as otherworldly beings who literally transcend any concept of human-created notions of sexuality, crowley and aziraphale perfectly reassures me that i am whole as i am…
on the other hand, they should have sex because sex is fucking funny as hell.

How is it that it took me until now to realise that “you go too fast for me Crowley” can be viewed as referring to his driving speed not their relationship?! Is this how straight people see the world? 😂 Like I didn’t even pick up on the “code” but went straight to the gay.

I'm sorry, maybe I'm late to the party, but do we have any official explanation as to why Aziraphale looks lo utterly disheveled in the 1967 scene?
His bowtie is undone, his shirt is UNBUTTONED excuse me???
Tumblr media
What are we missing? Did he try to reach Crowley inside the Dirty Donkey and was assaulted by, like, Mr. Brown's gay uncle, barely escaping with his virtue intact, and this is actually why he doesn't go to the pub?
(Alas, little did he know that he would be ambushed by another Mr. Brown in the same place circa 60 years later)
Was there a lead-up scene that ended up on the cutting room floor? Should we ask Neil Gaiman? Should we... ask Michael Sheen?

I can't believe I hadn't noticed this before, but dining at the Ritz wasn't a usual Thing that Aziraphale and Crowley would just do before the Antichrist business. At the end of S1, after they switch back, Crowley says "let me tempt you to a spot of lunch?" and Aziraphale suggests the Ritz.
In 1967, right before the "you go too fast for me, Crowley" moment, Aziraphale wistfully suggests that perhaps one day they could go on a picnic, or dine at the Ritz. Typically romantic date sort of things. And it just dawned on me that despite having that conversation, they had never dared to do such a thing. It had only ever been a fanciful idea, a fantasy, something too risky to actually do.
Until Aziraphale suggests it after the non-Apocalypse. Because he feels like maybe they can begin to stop holding back, because they're on Their Own Side now and they won't be under as much scrutiny. He still needed to go slow, but by suggesting the Ritz he implies that things have changed, that they could maybe be free.
