BEHOLD! BOOKS I READ IN 2023!
A handful of rereads, a lot of new favorites, and I put a huge dent in my physical unread piles! I'm pretty happy with my reading year to be honest!
BEST OF 2023
Nettle and Bone by T Kingfisher - If I haven't talked about it enough please read this. An absolute DELIGHTFUL start to the year, which is odd to say of a book about abusive spouses and dead sisters. Like. I wanted to reread it right after finishing it, and will probably reread it this coming year, I loved it so much
The Untethered Sky by Fonda Lee - also heart wrenching but listen, there are BIRDS! Giant birds!!!! A strange pick me up during a bad time, but it WORKED!
To Shape A Dragon's Breath by Moniquill Blackgoose - Oh what a marvelous read, a delightful adventure, I look forward to book two!
Provenance by Ann Leckie - don't hate me, but I think I might enjoy this more than the Imperial Radch trilogy. It's really what I wanted from A Memory Called Empire, and it was so much fun to see the Radchaai from a different perspective!
The Liar's Knot by MA Carrick - DEROSSI VARGO, MY BELOVED! But also, this has such rich worldbuilding. Every time there's a Pattern reading in a scene, the authors did their own reading in real life and put the results in the book. They came up with multiple calendars for the world. And it never feels overwhelming, everything is integrated so naturally! Ren heists an entire family for her and her sister. A lovely brick of a book :)
Where the Drowned Girls Go by Seanan McGuire - I think this might be my favorite Wayward Children book so far, I'm glad these books are bite sized because I want to read them over and over <3
The Raven Tower by Ann Leckie - WHAT A FUNKY LITTLE BOOK!
WORST OF 2023
Black Wings Beating by Alex London - birds would not fucking do that. Why are we following the most insufferable of the characters. Why is everything about him, even the parts about his sister. Blegh.
Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo - this canNOT be the same book tumblr couldn't stop talking about for months. I know I shouldn't judge a book by its sequel, but I know about the glowing demon dick. Come on. Also, like, the whole book was building up to rescuing someone and then THEY NEVER DID! wtf lol
Tress and the Emerald Sea by Brandon Sanderson - Snooze. Yawn. Snore. One of the most boring books I've read. I was right to avoid Mr Sandwich and his books.
Whalefall by Daniel Kraus - I feel bad because someone hyped this a lot and was excited about it, and so I was excited about it, but it read like it was written specifically for a movie in mind. It's just Daddy Issues™️in the ocean.
This does not include rereads, of which Name of the Wind was one. Yes, I still loved that one. Still fun, still weird that it never felt long despite being a BRICK. Proof I don't hate long books because they're long, I hate long books that don't have to be long. Which is why the Dishonorable mention goes to Priory of the Orange Tree lol Get edited, beloathed.
Anyway! Onwards to 2024! :)

10 Books to Read in 2023!
This year’s reading goal is to read at least one more book than last year (10+), and for at least 25% of my reads to be indie or self-published!
For indie/self-pub reads here, I have:
@ashen-crest‘s A Rival Most Vial, which I’ve been so psyched for since I started following
@abalonetea‘s Youth Sunken and @drchucktingle’s Camp Damascus which will be a deviation from my normal genre habits in that they’re both horror
@thebibliosphere’s Hunger Pangs which I read some of in 2021 and loved, but didn’t get the chance to finish
and finally I’m very excited to have the honour of beta reading Cavernous for @kjscottwrites after following the project with bated breath for a good chunk of 2022! I didn’t know if you had a cover yet, KJ, so I hope you don’t mind the blank box.
When I did this sort of post last year I believe it was a tag game, so I’d like to tag any/all the authors I tagged above as well as @thelonelyrainbowenby @cloudbooks @wardoffthenight to post some books from your 2023 TBR! I’d love it if any of my other followers wanted to do this and tag me to see, too!

notes:
well uhhh uhhh i did not meet a single one of my december goals. so that's....not great! i had really hoped to finish my ya sci-fi book rewrites by end of the year but alas, i still have 9 chapters left *sob* (i thought i only had 7 but recently realized i need to add two more chapters. cool. cool cool cool coolcoolcool.) but it's fine!! it's fine!!! i rewrote about 14k of my book in december and i'm finally entering the final arc so AAAAA. IT'S HAPPENING.
that is still gonna be my main priority for january (rewriting my book, that is). i'm hoping i will FINALLY finish but then again i've said that for like the last six months so we'll see lmfao. and if i DO finish rewrites, hoping i can delve into line edits woooo!!!
i'm hoping to also start doing a bit of querying prep this month (*screams internally*) by which i mean i just wanna at least start refining my query package—i technically have one already that i used to apply to mentorships and whatnot, but it's badly outdated now so uhh need to fix that! i had told myself i'd start querying by end of this month (even if it's just like, sending out One Query for the heck of it). not feeling like that's very likely but... who knows!
but also....i've been so burnt out on my book lately, i really just wanna write at least SOME fanfic this month. i want to write things for fun again, i miss it. :(
2023 wrap up:
total words written: 187.2k most words written in a month: 25k (november) least words written in a month: 9k (october)

"are we going somewhere" ch. 2
"you're a dream, i'm never waking up" ch. 9
"altea rising" ch. 15
other wips:
ya sci-fi book rewrites
adult fantasy book
sylvix pacific rim au
mathablossom bedsharing fic
red skies ch. 8
altea rising (editing ch. 16 and writing ch. 19)
planning sapphic princess/pirate book
planning adult sci-fi space western dads book
kazurei post-canon fic
2023 goals:
write every day
write at least 200k words
finish more drafts of my ya sci-fi book
send ya sci-fi book to betas
start querying ya sci-fi book
make progress on adult fantasy book (possibly try to finish a first draft)
outline another book
finish editing/posting sylvix dreamscape fic
finish editing/posting renga fic
finish writing altea rising and maybe start posting the unpublished chapters
start working on red skies again
work on sylvix pacrim au
work on at least one of my wenzhou fics
finish at least a draft of matchablossom bedsharing fic
keep working on twiyor practice kissing fic, maybe finish a first draft?
a huge maybe but perhaps start sylvix 50s/spy au if i have time/energy
notes:
*scratches head* well uhhh damn i did not really...do anything i wanted to get done this year.... LMFAO. and even the few things i checked off are things i like barely worked on/started. so, ouch 😅
in my defense... i did not foresee how much work i'd have to do with my book revisions this year. at the beginning of the year i thought i was going into line edits—but around april i realized i needed to do a full rewrite. so i essentially had to start over, and rewrote *checks notes* roughly 83k of it so!! as you can imagine...that was rather time consuming and i did not have much time to work on anything else.
but... i'm trying to look on the bright side: the reason i started over is because of how much i've learned about writing from my mentors and my critique group etc. and looking at my draft from last year vs. this year, i can see a huge improvement! there is still a lot of work to do on this book—but i do feel like in 2023, i fell more in love with the story and characters than ever before (like to the point where i essentially have brain rot for my own ocs... LOL). and i feel like after 2.5 years of hard work, i am starting to see the "real book" starting to emerge from the chaotic mess it was before. so, that's very exciting!!
which brings me to: i'm hoping to maybe....MAYBE...dip my feet into the querying trenches in 2024. i had kinda hoped to do this by end of 2023 but...once again i grossly overestimated how ready my book was at the beginning of the year lololol. but i do feel like once i finish this big rewrite, i'll have less structural/overarching things to fix and more scene-level and line-level edits which (fingers crossed) hopefully will not be quite as involved as, yaknow, rewriting my entire book word by word! SOOO i may be sorta sending out the occasional query as i work on line edit-y stuff (esp bc querying is so slow nowadays haha) so yeahhh haha *sweats profusely*
there are a few other original projects i hope to make progress on this year. firstly, i'd love to continue working on my first draft of my adult fantasy arctic monster wip (maybe...finish a draft? i kinda doubt it but maybe!!). i also hope to keep working on planning a couple other projects, including planning sapphic princess/pirate wip and space western dads wip—both of which i'm very excited about. :)
AAAAND I WANT TO WRITE FIC AGAIN!!!! i really neglected my fic writing in 2023 and i miss it terribly. 😭 i have a lot of wips i want to continue/finish—but i think main priorities will be editing/publishing the last chapter of sylvix dreamscape fic, trying to finish posting at least one of my other ongoing multichapter fics, working more on sylvix pacrim au, aaaand... finishing a draft of one of my other wips perhaps? i don't know, i'm trying to be gentler with myself since i think i had too many specific goals for 2023 and could not meet any of them haha. sooo re: fic writing the general goal is "just have fun and see what happens."
here is to more progress in 2024!!!! 🥳
2024 goals:
finish ya sci-fi book rewrites/edits
work on query package
send out at least one query
start a writing blog/newsletter
continue first draft of arctic monster wip
finish outlining space western dads outline (and start a draft?? maybe?)
continue planning sapphic princess/pirate book
post last chapter of sylvix dreamscape fic
update one of my other ongoing multichapter fics
work on other misc. fic and JUST HAVE A GOOD FUN TIME!!!!

Unlocked (movie)  ★★★★☆
Why you? Y Me? ★★★★☆
20th Century Girl  ★★★★★ - I watched this one blind so I'm going to ahead and warn you, it's very, very, very sad! Sobbing hysterically on your couch, sad. Can't watch anything else until the feelings go away, sad.
Tumblr media
Alchemy of Souls Part 2 ★★★★★ - I was worried with this one when they "recast" it that I wasn't going to like it, but it was gripping all the way through. I highly recommend the whole thing!
Tumblr media
Glory  ★★★★★ - This one should be coming with all kinds of trigger warnings. It's a revenge drama about a girl who was brutally mutilated via school violence. If you, like me, love a good FAFO story give this a go. If you're even mildly squeamish, maybe don't.
Tumblr media
Go Ahead ★★★★★ Go Ahead is... an acquired taste. It's found family, and it's coming of age, and it's love triangle and it's breathtaking beautiful. It examines different family dynamics and what it means to choose your family and what it means when your family doesn't choose you. All of that said... it is also a little bit about dating your step brother, and I know, okay, I KNOW, but if you just trust me on this, it's only a tiny bit weird and then it's not, and you're rooting for these maybe a little bit incestuous but not really, idiots.
Tumblr media
Be My Favorite  ★★★★★ This thai BL is not your typical coming of age, falling in love, enemies to lovers, story. Instead we have time travel, and the butterfly effect of the consequences of our actions. Gotta be honest, I'm a total ho for sci-fi tropes and this was done well enough that it rocketed into a favorites of 2023 spot before it was half finished.
Tumblr media
Hidden Love  ★★★★★ Come cancel me, Tumblr, I'm ready because one of my absolute favorite tropes is the *dun dun dun* age gap! In this drama a young girl falls hard for her older brother's best friend, and you get to watch as their relationship changes and grows as they mature. There is no hanky panky or even interest in our female lead before she comes of age but if you're a puri-teen steer clear, you won't have a fun time. My favorite part of this drama was actually the relationship between siblings, which felt much more authentic than many portrayals I've come across.
Tumblr media
My Beautiful Man S2 ★★★★★ The second installment in this series delivers! There's angst, there's humor, there's *eyebrow waggles*. I'm a tiny bit obsessed with Hira and I can't wait for more!
Tumblr media
My Personal Weatherman ★★★★★ Miscommunication, or as I call it, idiot plot, is the best. I know some people hate a storyline that could be resolved with less than 5 minutes of open communication between the romantic leads, but not me. Let these idiots stew in their misconceptions, let them leap tall buildings in a single misguided assumption. GIVE IT TO ME. Anyway, if you don't like that, don't watch this, but if you do, it's crack.
Tumblr media
My School President  ★★★★★ GeminiFourth stole my heart in this cute coming of age story. It hit all the right notes, with the added bonus of Fourth! I will say normally I hate when they shoehorn music into Thai dramas (so that the stars can go on tour?) but it fit well with the plot and the soundtrack is amazing. They can be my only exception.
Tumblr media
That's my dramas of the year wrapped! You can find all the drama's I've watched (that I remember) here:

My Favorite Books of 2023 Part 2: Science Fiction
By CDD20 on Pixabay Many of the books listed here are by my favorite authors and were books I was planning to read for my “2023’s Reading Books by My Favorite Authors Challenge“. My readings deviated from this challenge a lot though, by including the sequels of the Planetfall series by Emma Newman, two books of the Robot series by Isaac Asimov (an old favorite author of mine) and two sequels of…

2023 - A Year in Review
Well, 2023 has officially come to an end today is the first day of 2024. I would like to say that I spent a lot of time reading this past year and blogging regularly about it, but sadly that simply isn’t true. My mind was just not on reading this year. In fact, I haven’t even picked up a book and read a page since October at least. Although reading is a hobby I love, I’ve always been the type of…
