So a lot of YA books don't reflect actual teenage/young adult lives and issues which I think is a big issue. A LOT of YA books have a heavy focus on romance, which is fine, but that means it can be hard to find books about literally anything else that happens in an adolescent's life like mental illness, friendships, college choices, hardships with school, any of these things but as a marginalized person. The YA books I read when I first started reading YA were not great and led me to develop not so great ideas about what I should be and do and what the world around me would be like and was all over not great for 8th grade me. So I want to start a thread listing good YA books.
If you see this, please please reblog with your recommendations.
Solitaire by Alice Oseman
Born This Way by Alice Oseman
Heartstopper by Alice Oseman (really anything by Alice Oseman)
Not so Pure and Simple by Lamar Giles
Concrete Rose by Angie Thomas
The Hate You Give by Angie Thomas
Fat Angie by E.E. Charlton-Trujillo
The Summer of Impossibilities by Rachael Allen
The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins (yes it's good YA, fight me)
any riordanverse book

NO SPOILER DARK HEIR REVIEW
I don’t even know where to start with this. I swear to god, Pacat has outdone her/himself. THE TWISTS. THE TURNS. THE TRAGEDIES. It’s everything I hoped for and more. The way this book is written is so good, with every chapter leaving you wanting more. I couldn’t put it down and finished it the day I got it.
We learn A LOT more about different characters past, such as Violet, Will and definitely the characters from the old world. The relationships between the characters are so well written, and you can FEEL every emotion the way it’s written.
I don’t even know wha else to say but praise for the book. Can’t wait for the third one to come out, I need to know more!!
“I will always find you, try to run.”

Does anyone know of any fantasy books (YA or above please) that aren't an excuse for someone to write a romance novel that just HAPPENS to have a fantasy setting? I liked The Hunger Games and The Uglies because they have a well fleshed out universe AND drama, and romance was literally a sideplot/something that meshed. It didn't take away from the important beats of the drama and wasn't the absolute center of plot.
I mean,,,, if it's high fantasy with lesbians I will not complain. But I picked up like three different popular YA series and the main poin in the summary was a romance. New girl, scary/cool guy who she can tame wooaaaww

Don't mind me giggling to myself using that gif because The Last Of Us helped inspire Earth Sucks
It's The 100 meets If Humans were Space Orcs in this 'begrudging alliance' upper YA survival novel.
Hopefully this'll be the start of many apocalypse fans journeying past the Walls into nature's horrors, and joining our unconventional heroes' rebellious fight for freedom!
Synopsis: 𝐈𝐭’𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐩𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐲𝐩𝐬𝐞. 𝐀𝐧𝐝 𝐅𝐞𝐧𝐠 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐤𝐧𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐩𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐟𝐟. (more below)
Feng’s both the hunter and the hunted, searching for his missing family in a climate change decimated world controlled by the alien intruders. As a human – and maybe a little because of the explosions he leaves in his wake – he’s become public enemy number one.
Diem grew up on stories of the brutal human creatures, but never dreamt she'd meet one. When Feng crosses her path, she gets her chance. Now she wishes she never had.
His loved ones’ survival depend on their uneasy alliance. The terrifying truths awaiting Diem threaten to destroy everything she’s ever known. They’ve got one shot, and one wrong step could tip the scales of war.

Bem-vindo/a!

it feels so lame and cringe that the thing that got me back into reading is the avatar book series but theyre literally SO fucking good. like other YA i’ve tried to read recently i’d felt Talked Down To as a reader (like, obviously im an Adult so its not For Me but as proven by books like these you can write for younger audiences without treating them like idiots) and just couldnt get into things i was even nominally interested in but when i finally finished the first kyoshi book i was like... oh yeah.. books are GOOD. and listened to the audiobook of the second one and like i stalled a bit in between bc i read the first one before my senior year of college and didn’t listen to the next until after and then was so exhausted by work i wasn’t reading/listening much BUT it made me WANT to read again and im finally starting to again now

a list of YA books i need to buy because they filled a hole in my chest when i was younger
One Small Thing, by Erin Watt
I hate books that start with one night stands because it's usually about falling apart or being slapped together and loving endlessly. BUT NOT THIS BOOK. THIS BOOK IS AMAZING. 10/10 RECCOMEND TO ANYONE WHO WANTS A GOOD ANGSTY READ.
The Falling Between Us, by Ash Parsons
This book was why Keefe Sencen was the popstar he was in TPaTP, just so you all are aware how much I thought about what this book talked about. Not a perfect book, but it was sad and it was a ride.
Talk Nerdy To Me, by Tiffany Schmidt
oh, ow, wow is that my gifted kid burnout coming back to yell at me silently? it IS?! wow how peculiar!
Once and for All, by Sarah Dessen
kajsdlkasjdlsakdjlskajdklsdjfldskgj
Glitter, by Aprilynne Pike
ah yes. addiction. pain. dystopia. forced marriage. drug cartels. slavery. marinate for three hours. add seven cups of Marie Antoinette's sequined shoes. Stir. Sip carefully. Order Shattered like you need to breathe again.
The Art of Breaking Things, by Laura Sibson
Absolutely freaking destroyed me. I cried over this book. I cry over so little. And this book... Ouch. Just, so much ouch. It deals with VERY heavy topics, so if you find a lot of stuff triggering, I suggest you look up those first, but this book left an imprint on my mind that very, very, very few other YA novels have.
Nemesis, by Brendon Riechs
Epically fricked up my mind!!! Absolute mind boggler!!! Enjoy at your own risk!!! You will never be the same! Sci-Fi Thriller, absolutely horrifying!
Valkyrie, by Kate O’Hearn
awwwww it's death <3 but for kids because it's a girl with wings and if you touch her you die <3 <3 <3 so she wears gloves and it's very complicated because she really do want that hug tho <3
Eliza and Her Monsters, by Francesca Zappia
hi so are you socially anxious. if so, you will find the main character of this book annoying but horribly relateable and there's graphic novel segments and it's about a girl who annonymously is the content creator for an entire fanbase and about her anxiety and it's honestly really great and it's a really good discussion of fame and privacy and yeah it's good
The Conspiracy of Us, the Map Of Fates, and The Ends of the World, all by Maggie Hall
hi these books were just fun to read, highly enjoyable, you will want to read it again.
