Announcement: Please Participate in the Citizen Census Survey!

All Citizens of the Hermit Citizen Hub are being counted in the Hermit Citizen Census! If you are a past or present participant of the Hermit Citizen Community, no matter how much or how little you have participated, we ask that you fill out one response per each of your Citizens (one survey response per character) in the Hermit Citizen Survey linked here:

If your Citizen does not have a Citizen I.D. Card, please create one and place it in a new post in the #Citizen-Information forum thread on the Hermit Citizen Hub Discord Server in addition to filling out this Survey.

This Survey asks for each Citizen’s name, species, age, height, pronouns, base location, occupation and included duties, Citizen affiliations, Hermit affiliations, and the names of any shops that are owned by each Citizen. Please answer each question to the best of your ability, and fear not if you do not have a definitive answer for each question. For example, if your Citizen does not have a base, you are more than welcome to state this as well.

We ask that you answer all of the questions OUT of character from the perspective of you as the creator, NOT as your character. For example, if your Citizen tells everyone that they are a human but they are really a shapeshifter, you should still state their species as “Shapeshifter” in the Survey. In addition, we ask that you keep each response separate for each Citizen you are referring to. For example, if you have created five Citizens, take the survey five times to ensure that all of your Citizens are accounted for accurately.

This Survey is imperative to ensuring that every Hermit Citizen is accounted for and that you can see your Citizen in the final Census. You and the Citizens you have made have crafted the history, lore, and livelihood of the Hermit Citizen world. Regardless of whether you have made a single Citizen and moved on, or if you are a daily voice in this community, the goal of this Census is to celebrate the inimitable creativity of each artist, writer, crafter, and builder who has participated in the Hermit Citizen Community.

Weekly Weather Report

Weather Forecast for the Hermit Citizen Hub, week of Wednesday, June 14th to Tuesday, June 20th. Temperatures are written in Celsius Format.

Wednesday - Mostly Sunny. Temperatures range from 18 degrees to 25 degrees Celsius. Earthquakes may happen more frequently than usual near The Perimeter. Flight courses will be held at 1 PM around the large floating rocks.

Thursday - Sunny and warm. Temperatures range from 22 degrees to 31 degrees Celsius. Park rangers may appear sporadically to warn Citizens of potential wildfires developing across the Server throughout the month.

Friday - Downpours. Temperatures range from 8 degrees to 15 degrees Celsius. There is a small chance of these downpours turning to thunderstorms early in the morning. If this is the case, expect skies to clear up very quickly if Bdubs is in the area.

Saturday - Cloudy, foggy during the morning and afternoon. Temperatures range from 12 degrees to 17 degrees Celsius. Growling may be heard near both Cleo’s and Cub’s museums during the evening hours.

Sunday - Sunny and hot. A heat wave is expected. Temperatures range from 29 degrees to 34 degrees Celsius. Citizens are advised to stay hydrated and limit outside exercise. This is a great day to visit the beach. Whirlpools continue to appear occasionally, so take caution if you are planning on swimming.

Monday - Partly Cloudy. Heat continues, with temperatures ranging from 31 degrees to 39 degrees Celsius. All ice cream stands in Scarland will be half-priced. They will also open two hours earlier with an additional assortment of flavors. Dust devils may be seen in all desert areas from late morning into late afternoon.

Tuesday - Rainy. The heat wave is expected to end. Showers on and off are expected among clouds throughout the morning. Temperatures range from 19 degrees to 28 degrees Celsius. Flash floods are possible throughout the evening hours. Citizens are advised to take caution if they are traveling on foot.

Leo: Your birthday is on the horizon, but try not to throw a party. Things may go deeply wrong and there’s nothing you will be able to do about it. Watch the magazine articles, they’ll be the only thing that can give you a clue. Do not let the moon see your work.

Virgo: You should be wary of Aquarius. They may seem harmless and always want to help but there have been a lot of articles revolving around them lately.

Libra: Bring popcorn to the Perimeter you will need it due to what is happening with Virgo and Aquarius.

Scorpio: You notice there’s a lot of tension between Virgo and Aquarius lately that no one seems to know the reason behind it. You may want to dig into it and find out what’s the matter before something explodes.

Sagittarius: Make sure to prepare the shelter, do not deny you don’t have it. You do.

Capricorn: You never knew the origin of your family, and maybe that was for the best. You should not look into it as that will not help your situation.

Aquarius: Don’t mind Virgo’s suspiciousness, there’s been a lot of rumours going around lately and they’re probably nervous. Maybe you should bake them something to calm their nerves!

Pisces: Somethings coming…

Lost and Found

All of the following items have been brought to The Overseer staff’s office for safekeeping until they are claimed. If you recognize one of these items as yours, please visit us to receive your items, or contact us at [email protected]*. Thank you! *Not a real email address.

Item 1: A set of watercolor paintings all depicting builds from other servers. These watercolor paintings measure approximately 16 x 20 inches each, all featuring various structures built by the participants of our server. Each of these paintings has a thin black frame. The bases depicted include the following:

A large, whimsical house with a heavily detailed interior, basement, and bright roof next to a custom-built copper tree, created by Redfeather.

A cozy medium-sized tree house with pink doors and dark wood framing nestled among several cherry trees, made by Sami Bear.

A sturdy iron farm built in the desert with red decor and two massive turrets, made by Okami.

A tall wizard’s tower with stained-glass windows, several complementary textures, a full telescope, bookshelves from floor to ceiling and a spiral staircase inside, and conical roofs, located in a spooky forest, created by Redfeather.

A spacious section of a village featuring a large family home built from stone and wood and three-row houses, perfect for any roaming travelers to settle down, created by Roo.

If these paintings are yours, by all means, continue painting after you have picked these up, as your skills are quite remarkable!

Item 2: 50 Assorted origami dragons. Small enough to fit into the palm of your hand, these dragons were made from paper of every color you can imagine, with each fold carefully placed to give these miniature depictions a reflection of fine-tuned craftsmanship. These dragons include Albanian bollas, Slavic dragons, wyverns, sea dragons, and cockatrices. If these dragons are yours, we admire the patience it must have taken to design such a wonderful collection!

Item 3: A wood carving sculpture in the shape of a 500-type rotary telephone. This sculpture is about the size of a real rotary telephone, painted in pink and cyan. Due to the medium used, a telephone coil was created from aluminum craft wire to connect its two pieces. The creator of the sculpture has somehow made it possible to dial the numbers, and static plays through the holes depicting the phone’s speakers.

Item 4: A series of journal notes written in black ink with a calligraphy pen. These journal pages appear to be ripped out of a book and have yellowed with age. The writing speaks of several events of someone’s journey through various servers before making their way to Hermitcraft. While some of the writing is difficult to read, we can parse that the person writing them was on the run from an overarching being and was not certain that they would survive much longer due to the number of hunters chasing them down.

Item 5: Several yards of fabric of many colors and patterns. These fabrics come in gold, blue, green, purple, and red, and depict patterns of polka dots, stripes, small butterflies, paisley, loops, confetti, and leaves. The fabrics that do not depict any patterns at all include chiffon, velvet, polyester, and crepe. No sewing tools were found with this assortment. A set of notes regarding a costume design were found with the fabrics, noting specific details about which ones are to be used and how.

Setting a Custom Nanowrimo Goal

During Nanowrimo, writers typically strive to write 50 000 words in 30 days, but because we’re busy people with endless hours of scrolling to do, it might be a good idea for you to set your own custom goal! What’s important in a goal is that it would challenge you, but also that it is achievable.

To pick the right number, you’re going to want to go back to your schedule. What days would you reliably be able to write? Maybe Mondays to Wednesdays are looking good but you tend to get busier the latter half of the week, that's a good thing to know! Multiply your number by four, and you have the amount of days in the month of November you’ll be writing.

If you’re not sure, it’s a good idea to leave yourself a solid amount of wiggle room. I tend to take 5 days out of the total I’ll be writing, those 5 are my “wiggle room” days I’m allowed to miss in case there’s an extreme circumstance or I get just too busy to write.

Now, consider how many words you’d be able to write per writing day. Do you only have an hour? Do you write fast or slow? What does progress look like for you? Maybe it’s 500 words, maybe it’s 1600, maybe it’s 50. Whatever your number is, multiply that by the number of days you can write.

1500 words a day for 20 days is 30 000. Or 500 words a day for 25 days is 12 500. Whatever you think would challenge you, but works with your schedule.

That’s your goal.

Summer of Halbarry Writing

You know, maybe the reason why I didn't see the months of July and August fly by was because I was down a Halbarry rabbit hole

I am kinda impressed with myself because I am usually a slow writer and these are a lot of wordsTM for me to write in two months.

Who Grieves the Devil when it Dies: (8145 words, completed) Eobard Thawne's body is found at the scene of a robbery, on a Wednesday morning in June. Barry waits for the other shoe to drop.

2011 Haylor Timeline

Timeline Tag, or years 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024.

We don’t know the whole story

Although Harry and Taylor have never said when they met or started dating, often assumed to have met At the March 2012 Kids Choice Awards, because it was the first time we saw them together. 2 weeks after the awards Justin Bieber said a superstar liked Harry, but didn't name Taylor or say they met at the awards. I have a post about the Kids Choice awards/IKYWT Secret message and Harry's Jacket here.

A source close to Taylor later said to Vanity Fair he had chased her for a year, before the started dating, which was also before he kissed Emily Ostily on the 21 April 2012 and Taylor posted about infidelities to Instagram on 23 April 2012 (which doesn't make sense if they met 24 days earlier).

That would indicate they had met by March 2011. Which is likely as they were in the same city and locations throughout 2011. In 2014 Taylor told Rolling Stone:

"People think they know the whole narrative of my life, I think maybe that line is there to remind people that there are really big things they don’t know about."

As Taylor said to Time Magazine in 2023 and Harry said to Howard Stern in 2019 it's not in their interests for a new relationship to be public before they are solid. In Harry's words 'it's never benefited me' for a relationship to be public. In 2011 people were sent death threats for having dinner with him. It's no wonder they were hidden for most of that time. 12 December - X factor semi final, 1D third, Syco signed One Direction for £2 million, each boy was only paid an initial £8,000. Maybe signed on the 13th.

4 January - Taylor broke up with JG, All to Well - March. Taylor seen in LA on the 5th January then not again for a month.

16 March - Taylor's Lover Journal talks about Paris, seeing castles, 4th grade and career anxiety over the Mean video. She talks about visiting having visited Neuschwanstein Castle that later appears in Bejewelled MV.

17 March - Taylor plays speak now in Paris at Zénith de Paris, in park bordered by Canal Saint-Denis, (technically) outside Saint-Denis. Holy ground's secret message is “when you came to the show in SD” later the film clips for Begin Again, EHC, Falling and LOT tour images all reference canals in Paris. Taylor plays Soul Sister / Fearless mash-up for the first time that show. Soul Sister was Harry's first X-Factor Audition song. She plays the mash-up on/off for the rest of the tour and on the DVD.

The film clip included scenes on a train, the SBT message is "when you were on the train", she wrote it sometime on a bus. Speak Now dates in Colorado, Utah and Georgia. However, 28 September is possibly an anniversary and in the Four hang out (31-33) Harry said gotta be you was his favourite 1D song of all, which Niall clapped and said “well done Taylor your boyfriends back”. 4 October - At Bring 1D to me Munich, when asked about ‘Celebrity Dreamgirls’ Louis says "Celebrity dreamgirls um, yeah like there's a lot of people I suppose that we think is HOT, like... Harry?" the look Zayn, Niall and Liam's expressions, and Louis this is not flirting, he is 'ribbing' Harry for making out with a famous person and sharing his secrets. Harry says his crush is Emma Watson, who the interviewer says has a crush on him, H blushes and, not willing to let it go, Louis points out a love bite. 20 October - Taylor played San Diego. Harry was not seen. He posted "Finally set the correct time on my Microwave..I feel like a new man." on Twitter.

24 October- Harry is coughing in an interview and looks and sounds unwell. At 16:20 the interviewer asks about their break, Harry purses his lips for age thinking then says he is tried when he comes back to work because he spends his break rushing around to see everyone. Zayn looks to Louis who gives a loud “Hmmm” which is a tell of his for knowing more than is said.

30 October - Taylor writes in lover journal she (also) has a chest infection!

On 27 November on chatty man Harry clarifies there were other people there and again says just friends. Articles and Caroline tweets about death threats for having dinner with Harry. (Like WTF would anyone date him publicly?).

22 November - Taylor posts photo of London shop for preppie rugby menswear (!) and posts a photo to instagram with "Superior Style and Quality Fit" 👀 written on the window. This is a latergram, she had a show in Madison Square Garden. On October 3 Harry had said Rugby shirts look better on girls.

24 November Sugarscope asks if they have an eye on anyone in the US and mention Taylor Swift, all 5 are actually quiet for the first time, Liam’s face changes to serious (0:34), Harry and Zayn look at Louis, maybe because of Oct 4. 22 December - in 1D you tube the band chose a fan question “from Taylor, if you were a girl who would you date” and Zayn laughs and says Harry.

28 December - Taylor posts three photos from a beach one with her face on the beach "Childhood beach memories revisited" and one with snow on the beach behind her "Nothing quite like a freezing cold, wintery beach." some have assumed this was in New Jersey, but the shadows look like an afternoon on an western coast and there was no snow in NJ, nor Taylor seen near there. It had snowed at the beach in Liverpool which is west.

29 December - Taylor posted a seashell with Safe and Sound Lyrics written (it had just been released) with the caption "Saying goodbye to the shore, writing on a seashell."

30 December - Harry got his drivers licence, on 28 June 2012 on Bert show (11 mins) said “the first thing I did was my …….. someone brought the car to me and I dropped them off at the pub” Harry was in Manchester. Louis posted he was in Paris Disneyland with Eleanor. Apart from the winter/snow on the beach photos Taylor hadn't been seen for a week, she then posted a goodbye and Harry's first drive was to drop someone secret somewhere. 👀

"goood morning dc!! we feel like we can finally say that, wow. i think it's time to take a deep breath as a city, and relax as the investigators have finally caught those monsters who were attacking our city. it is a beautiful, sunny saturday morning here and we are so looking forward to a normal weekend here now that our beloved city has been returned to its rightful glory. our thoughts are still with the families affected, and we wish our government a smooth transition during this time, but all in all, we think dc really came out on top-- now here's michael with the weather--"

Okay, so. I swear one day I'll do like a "normal" SSS or WIP Wednesday, but. Today is not that day.

Six-ish sentences that demonstrate the pure joy and creativity of community:

1.) @larkral joked that someone would answer @ionlydrinkhotwater's Carry On Prompt (Swithin gets a crush on his roommate and calls Big Bro Baz for help) with a 75K fic.

2.) I said, in this comment thread with @whogaveyoupermission and @larkral, that if Jelly Babies became my longest CO fic, I would buy a cake with the phrase "Your roommate isn't a demon" on it.

3.) @artsyunderstudy MADE THE MOST INCREDIBLE SWEGORY ART

4.) Jelly Babies officially became my longest CO fic, currently clocking in at (checks) 23 348 words (also, I hit a fun milestone: as of right now, I've published 108 296 in 2022 words on AO3, outstripping my previous record of 102 355 words in 2020. What the duck!!!)

5.) I loved @artsyunderstudy's art so much that I put it on a cake so I could eat it.

6.) I ate my nerd sons.

I keep describing my energy while writing Jelly Babies as "unhinged" and honestly, even as I've slowed down and we're heading into the home stretch, that still holds. I had a really, REALLY tough time containing my maniacal gremlin laughter until I left the DQ Chill & Grill. Ange from DQ, wherever you are, you are a literal angel for making this beautiful cake and adding (totally unprompted!) those tiny hearts in the background.

I brought the cake to a writing session with some of my IRL writer friends (who are normies and don’t know I write fanfiction). They were quite puzzled by my explanation but delighted to eat ice cream cake, even though it’s -25 Celsius outside with windchill and we got like 30 centimeters of snowfall this week. We paired the ice cream cake with one tea that tasted of smoke and bourbon, and another that tasted of cinnamon hearts.

I’ve never been so intensely delighted by a cake before I even ate it. It’s the best $40 that I have ever, EVER spent.

It's already evening where I am, so instead of tagging folks, I will just say have a BEAUTIFUL Sunday and I hope that wherever you are, you get to eat cake. 🍰❤️🍰❤️🍰❤️🍰❤️

P.S. I can't bring myself to consume their beautiful faces......

Announcement: TURNsgiving Week 2022! 🍁🦃🍂

Hey TURN fandom! I, Cat aka @viola-ophelia, am running a TURN Week in the last week of November, starting on Thanksgiving day (Thursday, November 24th)! This will hopefully be a fun chance for you to get some creative inspiration and to share what you create - fics, art, meta, graphics, anything! - with the fandom! :)

Dates: Thursday, November 24th to Wednesday, November 30th, 2022

How it works: There will be a fun, thought-provoking theme for each day of TURNsgiving! (I will post individually about each theme very soon in more detail, and again a week beforehand as a reminder about the deadline!) The themes can be interpreted any way you want, and all types of creative output are welcomed. :) When you post what you’ve created to Tumblr, please use the tag #turnsgiving2022 so I (and others) can see it and share it!

Themes:

Day 1 (Thursday, November 24) - TURNsgiving Day! Get inspired by the season and create something autumn or holiday-themed... bonus points if it’s as chaotic as the infamous Townsend family Thanksgiving!

This month we start our Last Drabble Writer Standing (LDWS) competition, and to help celebrate that, it's also the month of short! Create something that is short for you---that could be a drabble or ficlet, but it could also be a small art, headcanon, etc.

You could also create works that focus on shortness as a theme!

Recommendation Bingo Board

For September, we are also issuing a group challenge. We want everyone to work together to black out a bingo board of recommendations! To do this, create a post recommending a fancreation that fills one of the bingo squares and tag the Cafe so it shows up in our activity feed. We’ll reblog all of the recs and twice a week update our collective board with progress. At the end of the month (or when we black out the board) we’ll post a round up of all your recommendations.

LDWS: Last Drabble Writer Standing

Sign-ups for LDWS will be live September 8-15! LDWS is a four-week drabble competition that we host every year. Participants are given a word count and prompt and have a week to write; their drabbles are then posted anonymously, voted on, and given feedback. We note the top three drabbles each week.

Also I read in a later article that the program “drew 38 percent of the national audience, according to the Neilsen ratings, and was the week's highest-rated special.” But overall it was ninth in the week for ratings, tied with a rerun of MASH.

HOLLYWOOD — If Victor Hugo was alive today he'd be one of the most sought-after writers by television network presidents. His stories contain all the elements deemed necessary to make a film or series successful. Most notable example is Hugo's "Les Miserables," written in 1862. Inspired by the French people seeking freedom from oppression, he wrote the now-classic tale of an impoverished man, Jean Valjean, who steals a loaf of bread to feed his starving family, and that act of survival sets off a chain reaction that includes drama, adventure, jeopardy, love, hatred and, above all, the action of the chase. CBS has picked the middle of what is usually considered an "off-week," the period between Christmas and New Year's Day when people are too preoccupied with holiday festivities to watch TV, to show the latest version of "Les Miserables," the Norman Rosemont Production in association with ITC Entertainment which occupies all three hours of CBS' prime-time programming Wednesday. It's CBS' gift-wrapped treat amid the rubble of reruns. The family that takes time out to relax from Yuletide activities will thoroughly enjoy a class production filmed in France and England in authentic surroundings that look as though no stone has been dislodged from its place since Hugo described its locale in his drama. Richard Jordan portrays Valjean, whose life is to be dogged by his obsessed pursuer, Inspector Javert, played by Anthony Perkins. As with his other revivals of the classics, "The Count of Monte Cristo," "The Man in the Iron Mask" and "The Four Feathers," all produced for both TV and theatrical release, Norman Rosemont has populated the cast with distinguished veteran actors. In his last performance, Claude Dauphin, who died recently, is seen as the kindly bishop who befriends Valjean. Sir John Gielgud is an elderly aristocrat. Celia Johnson is Valjean's housekeeper. Flora Robson is the head of a convent. Cyril Cusak is the convent's groundskeeper who provides brief refuge for the prison-escaping Valjean. Ian Holm is a greedy innkeeper. Joyce Redman is the bishop's housekeeper.

Two young British newcomers, Caroline Langrishe and Christopher Guard, were chosen to play Valjean's pretty ward and the grandson of Gielgud. And Angela Pleasance is the beggar woman who further impedes Valjean's escape by entrusting her daughter (Langrishe) to his care.

Of the many films on Hugo's classic (Jean Gavin as Valjean in the 1952 French movie; Gino Cervi in a 1943 Italian feature; Michael Rennie in a 1952 TV kinescope), the 1952 Warner Bros, movie with Frederic March and Charles Laughton is best remembered.

Who can forget Laughton's Javert, having finally cornered Valjean (March) in a Paris sewer after his three-decade pursuit, shouting "The law is the law!" although, he, like Valjean, is aged and weary of this senseless pursuit. Did the specter of Laughton's dominating performance lurk in the background of this 1978 version? "No, not really," replied Glenn Jordan, who directed the $3 million production. "I saw the Laughton version twice and found very little I could use. One of the few things I thought interesting and useful was that Laughton played an eccentric. So I had Tony play it eccentrically, but in an entirely different way.

"Laughton was always Laughton in the end, not the characters he portrayed. I felt it was important to be the character Hugo intended because, after all, a lot of people have never seen those other versions or ever read the book."

[Glenn] Jordan, who won an Emmy for the Ben Franklin specials on TV, among other citations for notable TV and stage productions, says that [Richard] Jordan, who first gained attention in TV's "The Captains and the Kings," and Perkins are much closer to the characters Hugo described in his lengthy novel. "I remember March and Laughton as being too old for their roles. They didn't really age as much as people would in real life, especially people who went through what they did. We assume Hugo's characters were about the same age in the beginning. The imprisonment period is 20 years, then a jump of five years passes, then it's 10 years more. [Really? March is such a young Jean Valjean] "That's why it was important to cast young men who could age (via make-up and character change), rather than start out with older actors in those roles." Redoing the classics has bothered some purists who prefer to let the original versions stand on their merits. But Glenn Jordan has valid reasons for remaking a classic such as this. "The social problems of poverty and justice vs. justice, these are things, I think that are self-explanatory," he said. The Smell of Fresh Bread {Pero Tovar x F!Reader}

Comments: The yeasty, warm scent of bread always draws Pero Tovar close. Even after over nine hundred years. Sending him into the bakery where you are behind the counter.

Bread has always been a staple of Pero Tovar’s diet. There were times that he would kill - literally kill - for half a loaf of bread to fill his empty belly. Of course the bread that he had eaten as a child and then when he was traveling on the back of his horse while he was selling his sword was much different than the artisan bread that are sold today.

He’s old. Nearly one thousand years old although he never really knows how old he is. He never knew what year he was born and his mother died when he was young. But as far as he can figure, he’s a few years shy of a thousand years. The oldest man alive, although no one would ever know that.

His working theory is that because of William Garin, that trip to the Great Wall of China and the battle with the Tao Tei, something happened to cause him to outlive everyone. Maybe it was the explosion that should have killed him, but had just dazed him.

Whatever the case was, he had watched the world change. Rulers, countries rising and falling, modernization of society and the technology that had come with it. No longer having to rely on his horse, his existence is far lonelier without that presence at his side.

Bread could be mass produced. Coming from factories and wrapped up in plastic bags with little twist ties that indicated what day they had been baked. You could find bread in practically any store that sold food and just like it had been back when he was younger - some people lived off of it. Although they turned them into sandwiches now, rather than just tearing off hunks and eating it, or using it as a plate. Hell, in the past ninety-four years, they started selling already sliced bread.

The scent of bread, yeasty and fresh is heavy in the air. Making his nose twitch as it comes up. Inhaling deeply, Pero’s feet start to follow the delicious smell. It’s sweeter than it had been so long ago, but just like he had been when he was a young man, Pero was hungry.

He had followed his nose and his belly for the past nine hundred years. That hunger that always seemed to drive him never went away, no matter how easy it became to have bread or really anything. While he couldn’t go into the trees and pick fruits as he wanted, the variety of food had exploded as travel became easier and the world became smaller.

He hadn’t changed that much. Sure, he was no longer wearing a sword on his hip or the thick, padded leathers that protected him from arrows. He didn’t ride a horse, instead he often drove a car around. Something he could have never imagined when he was back on that wall with the monsters.

He still bears the scars on his body. Testaments of past battles, still has the very deep, dark mark that splits the left brow and shows how close he came to losing his eye. It had never lightened or looked any better over the centuries. His entire body has stayed the exact same as when he had been at the wall. Never aging, never getting old physically.

Because of this, people still warily watch him, sometimes crossing the street so they don’t have to be near him. The scowl that he never managed to lose was also a deterrent for people interacting with him. Not that he wanted a lot of people coming up and talking with him, asking mundane questions about the weather. He doesn’t understand that trend of smalltalk. It’s useless, although he seems to find it amusing when it’s an obvious ploy to start a conversation with someone a person is interested in romantically.

He has watched flirtations and courting rituals change over the years and yet it’s still slightly the same. Never participating, but snorting to himself as he watched young pups make fools of themselves over a pretty set of eyes or a nice set of tits. It was a pity whorehouses had become taboo, they could use some experience on how to talk to women, where their coin opened thighs and most would tell them when they were stupid. The whores of his time weren’t wallflowers. They would eat those boys alive or they would become men. No other option.

His feet continue to move towards the smell. Getting stronger as he walks, hands in his pockets to try to look less fearsome. Right now, he just wants a loaf, hot out of the oven and butter and jam. He’s fallen in love with the different varieties of sweet fruit jams that are available now. Sugar was never a very prevalent thing for him, too costly. Now, sugar seemed to be in everything and the glutton in him loves it.

Pero discovers the shop, tucked into a corner and when the bell tinkles as the door opens, it releases a torrent of hot, yeasty bread that nearly makes him moan. Spices, mixed into the breads or sprinkled on top tickle his curved nose. The raw scent of flour assured him that the doughs were mixed on sight and it’s not just another site that thaws frozen bread and bakes it.

Stepping into the shop is almost like being transported back in time. Heady, earthy and warm. The ovens in the back, beyond the swinging door are not wood burning - and it’s a pity - but it does make the space several degrees warmer than the street.

Wire racks are stacked with bread. Nothing in pretty little cellophane bags or behind a glass counter. Yes, the counter separated him from the bread, but it was all tantalizingly on display. Bagels and loaf, some covered in seeds and nuts, dried onions and some chunks of garlic permeated the filling with strings of sharp cheddar. He even spotted fat blueberries dotting some and one loaf was pink, obviously a strawberry bread. Loafs of every shape laid on the metal racks, cooling and he wants every one of them.

His eyes are focused on the breads, so much so that he doesn’t see her. The white apron wrapped around her hips is practical, even if it doesn’t quite stretch wide enough to cover the ampleness. Wiping her hands and foregoing swiping at the almost charming dusting of flour on her cheeks, she only captures his attention by bending down and getting between him and his target.

“May I help you?” You ask, having repeated yourself four times before you had finally stepped in front of the racks.

Pero startles, not an easy feat for one as normally aware as he is. Jumping slightly and frowning even more than his resting face portrays until he gets a good look at the woman who spoke to him, you.

You’re….lovely. Thick set and pretty, eyes bright and filled with slight amusement at his expense right now. His own expression easing when he sees the evidence of a flourly hand brushed over your skin, possibly wiping away sweat or some irritant and leaving behind a smudge on clear skin.

Attraction, painful and swift, rides through his belly and shocks him. It’s been years since he’s felt a pull towards anyone. Keeping himself apart so he doesn’t have to break anyone’s heart when he inevitably doesn’t stay. Nearly one thousand years roaming the earth and Pero Tovar had still never managed to plant roots.

“I-” He had gone back to Spain two years ago, immersing himself in the language so that his accent had sharpened. If he was gone for too long, he seemed to lose it and it was the last remaining thread that he had held onto from his tumultuous beginnings. Unless you count the dagger that had never left his side, even when he had laid down his sword. “I followed my nose.” He blurts out.

You laugh, light and obviously charmed by the ridiculous comment. Making him shuffle and pull his hands out of his pockets so that he can reach for his wallet. No longer carrying a money pouch on his belt, wallets were where tiny plastic cards were kept. Not gold nor silver. “That’s good.” You promise him, grinning as you look around the shop. “That’s what I wanted. For people to be drawn in by the smell of fresh bread.”

Nodding, Pero looks up again, still startled by those eyes you have. Watching him and he can’t look for too long. Sliding his own gaze behind you as he wonders if you are spoken for. There wasn’t a ring on your finger, but that didn’t mean much when you work with your hands. Another surprising thought. “I want something.” He tells you. “The best you’ve got.”

Humming, you turn around and pick up a loaf, round and crusty looking. It’s dark, indicating it wasn’t made with the white, highly processed flours that are used in baking today. It has chunks of wheat germ and oat in it. His mouth waters when you turn around and pull it up to take a deep breath, inhaling the scent. He’s not hungry for food as your eyelashes flutter in delight and you let out a small sigh of happiness at the pleasing smell.

He’s about to speak when you open your eyes. Smiling at him as you turn and walk to the small stand where you reach for a plate, a small crock and a pot. Putting them and the bread on the tray as if you know he was going to stay and eat it. He’s too bemused, or maybe bewitched by the sway of your hips to even ask what you are giving him.

Only when the tray is pushed over the counter towards him does he remember payment. Pulling out a card and thrusting it towards you in order to let you charge it for his treat.

He freezes, eyes widening when you shake your head. “For you, Pero Tovar, there is no charge.” You tell him. “Eat and remember.”
