I've been thinking about Sarafan Raziel. Because it grings my gears that the fandom mischaracterizes him so.

In the fandom, everyone calls him a prick and an asshole, but I think it would be way more coherent to his character if he were an extremely kind person, who still dirtied his hands in the name of righteousness.

Imagine a human Raziel who is well liked by his peers, who is good with children and kind to women, and who leads the sarafan with a strong will because he has a sense of purpose. Not over status and power, but because he genuinely believes the cause he is part of. Imagine that noble person, that paragon of humanity, that charmed even his wraith self for a while.

And then imagine this person commiting unspeakable acts of genocide in the name of faith. Blinded by righteous rage, he doesn't pity his victims because he was led to believe they were a plague, and doesn't even mind the monster he becomes in the process, because in his eyes, everything he does is for the good of the world and that absolves him. And that would make Wraith Raziel even the more horrified. What do you mean this gentleman he looked up to can turn into that brutal murderer? Capable of wiping out an entire culture?

And it shows that humans can be monsters, and that monsters can be human. That he's not a cackling evil maniac like Moebius, but instead a sweet man. That even war criminals have human lives and go back home to their families at the end of the day.

And everything Sarafan Raziel did against vampires, Vampire Raziel did tenfold against humans over the course of the thousand years that he was Kain's lieutenant. Raziel as a vampire enslaved humans like cattle and turned them into playthings out of boredom. I don't see the fandom criticizing Vampire Raziel nearly as much.

And here's the thing. Once he turned into a Wraith, Raziel had a process of unlearning his idea that humanity were lesser beings. He started fighting to protect them just as much as vampires, because they're also part of the world of Nosgoth, a world he wishes to see restored.

You know, if Wraith Raziel was capable of unlearning a thousand years of his vampire self enslaving humans, and start seeing them as equals and worthy of saving, and later on even as noble beings, I like to think the same would be possible for Sarafan Raziel too. Because even if he lost his memories, his personality stays the same across his lives. I he only had more information. He just never got the chance to.

Or, he did, when he became his new self.

I like to think that, in the end, when he was struck with the Soul Reaver and killed by his wraith self, the memories from the future came rushing through, and he had a glimpse of his entire future history. That would probably have changed his views. But alas, he died too quickly to be able to process it.

I was discussing LoK headcanons with @hard-times-paramore , and she had the idea that vampires still produce water-based tears, which would explain the dark streaks under Wraith Raziel's eyes. Thus, vampires of Kain's era would be heavily discouraged from crying, as their tears would leave behind a visible reminder of their moment of weakness.

Coupled with this, I like to imagine at least one of Raziel's brothers secretly mourned his fate...and was mocked relentlessly for it afterward.

As softhearted as Rahab could pretend to be, Dumah was always the most genuinely family-oriented of the brothers. It came as no surprise to Kain that he was the one most likely to crumble. All the more an effective example, then: To see the proudest warrior of them all so easily broken by a single command from the god-emperor of Nosgoth.

Turel, second-born, but arguably twice as accomplished as his elder sibling, remained impassively clear-skinned.

Hello hope I'm not to early. Love reading your work on both here and on AO3, i's always worth the wait. Don't forget to put yourself first if you feel on the verge of a burnout. As for my prompt, how about one where Alec is the one who gotten the extra gifts instead of Jace and Clary? Like the creating new runes one? Maybe he was the one experimented? Or maybe he some how free Ithuriel (the angel) before Valentine's started drawing blood so Alec was blessed? Sorry for the long rambles.

Lilith stares at her belly in shock, confusion warring with disbelief as she feels a shallow heartbeat echoing. As if it’s embraced and protected by her own body. For a moment, it’s as if she has a babe nestled within her, growing and sustaining itself because of her.

Then the heartbeat wavers, as if it might fade and Lilith disperses herself into a wraith of shadows and follows it. It’s a nephilim soul, soft and innocent and so very weak and it belongs to her.

Oh, it’s not her womb the babe rests in, her precious son, but Lilith can feel her magic claiming him, her power anointing him as he’s consecrated as her son.

It’s only because of soft, flimsy tether to his soul that Lilith can summon herself to his side, hiding in the shadows as a man monitors an unconscious, pregnant nephilim.

Lilith is patient as she watches, her gaze covetous as she watches and she wants nothing more than to bury her hands into the woman’s stomach and pull free her son. She wants to hold him in her arms like this unworthy being is holding him in her womb.

Except she can’t, because while he is now her son, he still needs the incubation of a healthy womb and Lilith can’t give him that. Even if she could, there is no guarantee that it would be safe for a child once born of Raziel.

So, she waits and watches and learns.

Finds out that a mad, vicious shadowhunter is experimenting and somehow came across one of the many slivers of Lilith’s soul that she hid around this realm before she was banished.

The woman, Maryse doesn’t know what’s been done to her, or that the child she bears is no longer her son but Lilith doesn’t care. She only watches, delighted as Maryse grows larger, as Lilith’s son is nearly ready to be born.

When it’s time, it takes everything not to simply speed up the process and rip him free, but Lilith is not yet strong enough, nor is the tie to her son powerful enough, to allow her free reign. So, she must leave this worthless nephilim to pretend to be her son’s mother.

However, not all is lost.

Her son is often left to his crib and Lilith spends more time in the shadows than she ever has before. She sings to her babe, coddles him when he cries and uses magic so that she can feed him when he’s hungry.

He’s a perfect child, Lilith's precious Alexander. A babe whose name she whispered in a dream to Maryse, so that she could claim every piece of him possible.

Sweet and strong and so adoring of her, his small face scrunching up and his fingers reaching out to her even when he can’t possibly recognize her for the shadows, she hides in.

It’s not enough.

It will never be enough, but it is something, for now.

Pretty privilege includes wraith form btw (I know zephon mocks his ass saying he's not Kain's pretty boi anymore but I have to disagree, he's still pretty to me)

I liked him as soon as the intro for Soul Reaver 1 finished, and my love for him only grew with each subsequent hour playing and with each subsequent game. Some reasons why (there's too many!!!!) :

HIS VOICE, THE ACTING, THE THEATRICALITY OF IT ALL, THE GESTICULATION THE DIALOGUE THE PHILOSOPHIZING THE MORAL GRANDSTANDING... Ugh I love his inner-monologues, his musings and narrations (guys... I-I... may have a type....)

Like, HIS WRAITH DESIGN! ALL HIS DESIGNS BUT WRAITH ONE IS SO UNIQUE AND MEMORABLE! I had seen his design before playing the games and it immediately grabbed my attention. I have never forgotten about it ever since I first saw it. The " no lower jaw no pants thing" he has going on, I love that he's self-conscious about his missing lower jaw so he hides it with his former cape/cowl. I love his low poly ass in SR1, his empty ass rib-cage,the very grabbable waist, the glowing blank eyes, the mascara running down his bony cheeks, his blue tits… I see a game that let you play as a disheveled corpse and I'm all in. In love with it immediately, and it pisses me off that I'll never look this good!

I love his animation for eating souls.

Shout-out also to his T-posing jesus thing he does to pass through grates!

I love his ability to shift between the material and spiritual relms sooooo much, the way the architecture and environments bend and twist, my beloved

I love him as a vehicle for you to go and explore the history of Nosgoth, the way you the player are just as clueless and ignorant as he is in a way that draws you to want to dive in deeper and deeper into this world, it's so well done

I love his Ouroboros-core ass and all that that symbolism entails, I love you doomed by the narrative but nevertheless never stop trying

I love you harrowing tragic experience after tragic experience, take my boy outta these situations but also don't because they're so good

I love you endings of Soul Reaver 2 and Defiance and what it does for his character, I love you hope and trust

I love how he's everyone's pawn and his attempts to free himself from that all throughout space and time

I love his utterly confused and lost ass

I love his history, both what is in the text and all the hints and details you can read into if you want, I've seen such good meta and headcanons! ALSO Everyone shut up and go read @razielim's Metasanguine for some delicious scrumptious raziel and his brothers' meta and empire era fleshing out of their characters.

I love his self-righteous indignation I LOVE YOU "YOU'RE A RIGHTEOUS FIEND AREN'T YOU APPARENTLY I AM" (allow me to toot my own horn and link to this art I did right after the ending of SR2 fucked me)

I love his character development

HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH HIS KIN, ESPECIALLY KAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!

ALSO HIM AND JANOS

HIS TIE WITH AND EVENTUAL REVELATION OF THE SOUL REAVER SWORD YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW MUCH SOUL REAVER 2 FUCKED ME UPPPPPPP AND HOW STUPID I FELT FOR NOT HAVING SEEN IT COMING I LOVE FEELING LIKE A FUCKING IDIOT

Love his multiple incarnations throughout the many centuries (it's so good to see the many ways he has changed and the many more he may not have changed at all. ) THE FACT THAT THESE FOUR ARE THE SAME PERSON AND IT'S NOT JUST A CLUSTERFUCK THERE IS MEANING AND INTENT BEHIND THIS AND AAAARGHHH WHERE ELSE DO YOU GET THIS KINDA SHIT

Legacy of Kain for fun: Kids Planned, Oops, Denial

(This post is for entertainment purposes; I'm fully aware that vampires in LOK are sterile... Raziel obviously as a wraith. Either way enjoy.)

Kain: Isn't interested in being a father; considering he literally raised six lieutenants from death. Outcome: "Oh you're expecting...well shit fine." You're in good hands and expect to see a new banner hanging from the rafters if you have a son.

Raziel: "Yes have my babies." As a vampire he wants them to carry on his sexy superior genes. Big ass baby shower; swans and freaking servants tending to your every need. (As a wraith Raziel is perplexed...but he does not object your pregnancy... Very laid back but pleased. "I hope they get to keep their jaw and organs at least...")

Turel: This one is definitely planned. Turel won't consummate your relationship and take parental duties until he's sure both of you can handle it. Little does he know that no matter how much he plans you never know what parenthood is going to throw at you. (Outcome: "Congrats Turel you have twins.")

Dumah: "Who wants kids when you have me?" That's Dumah's way of thinking anyhow. Until one steamy night he forgets to be careful. Yes big oops on his part. He freaks out at first but gradually warms up to the idea. Happiest man of the year award.

Rahab: Planned but not stubborn about it. Things happen and if you end up carrying his child then he takes responsibility and marries you on the spot. Responsible but let's nature run it's course. He did choose you after all.

Zephon: DENIAL all the way. "No way that's mine!" As many fledglings as he has you'd think he'd be okay with the idea... Nope. He comes around eventually and sucks it up. That dad that gives his child a motorcycle their first birthday. If you're carrying his child then Zephon knows to step up and take care of what's his.

Melchiah: No way... really??? He's beyond belief but ecstatic. Welcomes the news with open arms and he's not ashamed one bit. He's so happy you're his... Definitely the kind of guy that says: "Let's have another."

Bonus:

Vorador: Are you kidding? He's got babies everywhere. But these are special babies. Since you're his main you will be taken care of and doted on. Not planned and not an accident. Vorador is known to be a good father.

Janos: Planned. Period. Are we ready? Man of tradition and devotional mate. Does everything he can to make you comfortable for when that time comes but freaks out when you're in labor. Pulls a Ricky Ricardo and heads to the hospital and forgets to take you with him.

Sebastian: Oops... considering his busy schedule he doesn't know your carrying his child until your far enough along. He's not object to the result of your love making but that just means he's got to do double time to support that extra mouth to feed. He marries you eventually but just know Sebastian means business and won't let you and his fledgling down.

Marcus: Denial... your mind shouts truth. But Denial. He can't believe it; how could he be so stupid?! Yes he runs... but he looked up to Vorador so much he owns up to the truth. He apologizes and takes care of you and the new addition to your lives.

Faustus: Doesn't take you seriously but caves when he realizes your telling him the truth. He's in shock but accepts the result without any issues. Surprisingly responsible and pleased with himself and you better believe he's not letting you go. Already planned on calling them Faustus II...

Magnus: Definitely an oops. But since he knew he wanted you to begin with it's no surprise that you're expecting. He's a man of his word and will marry you... expect lots of babies though. Absolute family man.
