Wood Engraving Wednesday
So, this week we’re replacing our usual wood engravings with color woodcuts instead because we wanted to show off some of the exquisite original wood block prints from a 2-volume set of contemporary Japanese woodcuts. The volumes have not been cataloged yet because the title and publication information are in Japanese and we have not had them translated yet. The title (we believe) is on the cover of the book, which we show here.
The two volumes contain 24 original prints by different artists showcasing traditional techniques with modern sensibilities. Each print is stored in a page composed of a polyethylene sleeve that the print can be removed from. Please click or tap on the images for title and artist information.

So lately I’ve been experimenting with tree ring prints. I’ve collected a few like this piece of oak from a damaged tree that needed to be brought down. It’s still a learning curve at the moment on getting the burning right and knowing the correct amount of ink to use, but I’m really enjoying the process and hopefully I’ll have some more on the way.
How do you think it looks?

Milestone Monday
On this day, July 17th, in 1871 Expressionist and Bauhaus artist Lyonel Feininger was born into a German-American household in New York City. At the age of 16, Feininger moved to Germany to perfect his craft and later became part of the German Expressionist movement. He associated with artists from many different Expressionist groups including Die Brücke and the Blaue Reiter Circle during his time in Germany. Feininger also gained an interest in the Bauhaus school while in Germany and eventually designed the cover for the 1919 Bauhaus Manifesto and taught at the movement’s school for many years.
Much of Feininger’s Bauhaus work can be seen in the exhibition catalog Lyonel Feininger: Becoming a Bauhaus Artist, Woodcuts published in Bielefeld, Germany by Kerber Verlag in 2013. A large amount of the artist’s works focus on the representation of churches, both in his woodcuts and paintings. Viewers can see the clear Bauhaus influence in the artist’s work: minimalistic geometric shapes are used to depict the many buildings and scenes created by the artist, in both his prints and paintings. We also see Expressionist influence in these works as well, as they are also focused on similar geometric forms and creating art that represented what the artist felt about the subject, rather than a completely realistic depiction of it.
After his artwork was included in Hitler’s Degenerate Art exhibit, Feininger returned to America to teach, but he eventually moved back to Germany and focused on photography before his death in 1956.

I absolutely love your cr art, it’s so yummy and cozy!!!! Idk if this has already been asked or not, but how do you digitally color your traditional sketches? It’s a really cool look and I want to try it out myself but I can’t wrap my brain around how you got it to work XP
thank you :- ) !! to colour traditional sketches i take a photo of the sketch on my phone and then send it to my ipad (my phone is newer so the photo is better lol) and use procreate to adjust levels and things for the photo so its closer to just lines and then put it on multiply layer mode and colour it underneath

[image description: 7 photos of a letterpress print, the formes of wood type, and the relief linoleum block used to print it. The print illustrates in orange a pair of human hands holding open a snarling dog's mouth; underneath in yellow are parts of the dog's skull and spine. beside it in burgundy, printed from rough, large wood type, is the text: "Something about the way I hold my teeth makes me prone to biting myself." The forme of handset wood type is assembled in the Vandercook press bed letter by letter, with more pieces of wood, lead, and steel as spacing between each letter, word, and line of type. end description.]
Some of me is freed from tension having finished this one. I have been turning images like this over and over and trying to suss out what they mean and then, at the dinner table, my sister said nearly these exact words for completely unrelated & normal reasons and I did a jerkwad Artiste behavior of scrambling for a piece of paper and writing it down in the middle of the conversation. I’m genuinely sorry, sometimes I am a stereotype of my profession and my mind is not present with you when we talk. It is somewhere else thinking about mammalian bite strength. 16x16 inches, cream BFK Rives. This was one of those Audience Of One (Who Is Me) projects when I was designing it, BUT I did make an edition of 25 (plus a couple slight misprints). Etsy or message me if u also wish to have this mood for your home :)
