Everybody is listening to NOBODY IS LISTENING!!!! (I know, so cheap, that's on par with New Direction headlines, I'M SORRY OKAY. Never again.) Anyway the album debuted at #1 on the worldwide itunes charts and in dozens of countries, there's more awesome merch (socks! masks! mugs!), and Zayn (or various manifestations of him) are everywhere. He tweeted “Just wanna say, it feels great to share this with you all! everyone’s support and love means a lot, here’s to a great year hope it better than the last!” and he's out there answering comments (that'll be him; would a PA bother with those fancy fonts?), but is it him texting people back from the snippet number? Unlikely... is it him in the listening party chats? IDK but there's definitely a Zaynbot (well, staff in this case) in there as well (if you don't believe me the “we appreciate you” is a clue lol), is it him doing all the boring promo retweeting, ehh, and so it goes throughout the promo, Zayn is everywhere but where is ZAYN?? I feel like the blurring of the line between the man and the various bots would make (human) Zayn pretty pleased, the man loves a robot after all! HOWEVER, it would be a special kind of robot that would select the “I'm fingering myself” tweet (in which he was NOT tagged) to answer (“ya wha?”), and how lucky are we to have the real ting among us for this brief moment: who else, I ask you. WHO ELSE. And, of course, we got the biggest pure Zayn shot of all: the ALBUM! He also liked a tweet about the fact that Tightrope samples an Urdu song (by Mohammed Rafi), and reposted a fan's story from a NIListening listening party ft homemade party hats that were markedly classier than the no doubt expensive custom-made ones from Zayn's bday party, and a sexy new publicity pic was posted. We also got footage from a truck all tricked out to be a NIL-mobile! The back of the box van is filled with an installation of mirrors and NIL faces and black light and a spinning platform-- footage from there showed very few people present and they spoke of having a COVID-safe release party but given that there was a pro camera team present, there's speculation it was perhaps used to film a video or something as well. But whether or not that happened it does seem they drove it around to use for private celebration, a lot of people from Hadid circles posted about being there and there being a kid dance time and stuff. Lots of cool trippy footage from inside.

Today's Harry news again slants towards TPWK video chat rather than movie studio sponsored romance-- in what little Holivia news there is we get an interesting backpedal focus on being told that if Olivia and Jason were still together when Harry came into the picture (if this were real which it isn't) he “didn't know” and, in so many words in big old headline type, “Harry is blameless.” Furthermore, the idea that this might be “just a phase” for Olivia has been introduced. That astrologer was pretty on the nose in some predictions, but May or June for a Jason/ Olivia reconciliation seems awfully conservative to me; I'd be very surprised if we had to wait that long! Anyway, if they're trying to redirect Harry news to be about his music, I'm on board! Today we got more from Gabe and Ben Turner; Gabe says “He works to a really high standard but he’s unbelievably kind to literally everyone, all the time. Even if he’s under pressure, he never drops his standards of the right way to behave and being kind to people... You watch the way he is with the runners, producers, sound people, whoever… He’s treating them with so much love and respect that everyone works as hard as they possibly can to make his vision come true because he’s so joyful to be around” which could sound like more damage control, except that it's exactly what everyone who's ever worked with him says, so we know it's true. Ben tells us that the Golden vid was supposed to be different-- “the initial idea was Harry driving around LA with different people getting in and out of the car, people who were significant to the album or his life.” I guess it's handy they had the idea already right there to recycle for Holivia pics; but also I'm glad the video was what it ended up being instead of that. They also tell us that the TPWK vid was always going to be the final piece of the Fine Line era (“It was always supposed to be the last thing on the album run as an ending beat”) but that it ended up being held back longer than originally intended because the album did so well (and probably because of the way things were stretched out by COVID) and how that ended up being strange- “the video has stayed the same but the world has disappeared.”

An affordable candle from Target has been found that allegedly smells like... Louis? Reviews specify that he smells like “clean laundry” (I have to admit I have heard that said before) and vanilla and so does the candle, which is called 'cozy nights' and is said to also be 'a cute color' (it's white). I might want to pair the candle with a slight eau de wet dog, cause in MY fantasy Louis hangout Cliff is for sure there too, but the target candle buying audience may be fantasizing about, uh, different scenarios than me...

And finally, Niall on Niall; “epic... jesus I'm way too much“ (yes with laugh faces) plus he comments on his 14 million spotify listeners-- “next time we're gona get much higher.” He also posted to suggest folks should give Heartbreak Weather a listen so it seems he hasn't yet given up on getting higher numbers THIS time.

I think that the angst got me a bit, but I didn’t shed too many tears and all in all it was just such a good read.

Chapter Seven: We’re Not Who We Used To Be

Harry’s heart had been shattered since his phone call with Ashley, his head was all over the place, the one positive thing he had in his life and he had lost it. After another month of moping about in Europe he found his way back to England, visiting Bath in an attempt to regain some sense of normality. He was now back in London and it had never felt less like home, as he stepped into his house it didn’t feel at all like home. The memories of eating ice cream at 2am on his sofa with Ashley when she had her first heartbreak, the late night two person dance parties in the kitchen when they were barely adults, the time he showed her how he truly felt. It felt as though all these memories had faded from existence. He moped into the kitchen, spotting a pink piece of paper on the spotless kitchen counter, he picked it up, seeing a picture that could only have been drawn by Daisy, it was the three of them. When lockdown slowly started easing, Harry had asked Ashley to pop over to his house every so often to check it was okay, he assumed she must have left it then.

“Everything seems to be going the way I’d like it to.” Ashley’s health visitor assured her as she helped Ashley sit up properly. Since Ashley was now seven months pregnant she was becoming fearful that the baby would come early like Daisy did, she had organised several home visits from the midwifery team.

“So the baby’s not too small?” Ashley asked.

“Definitely not, the baby is nearly the same size Daisy was when she was born, so fingers crossed you’ll get the natural birth you hoped for last time.”

“That’s perfect thank you Dianne,” Ashley smiled as the doorbell rang, “Could you just pop your head round the curtain and see who that is?” Ashley asked.

“It’s a man, with lots of tattoos on his arm, holding a massive bunch of flowers.” Dianne told her, “Do you want me to let him in?”

“No thanks, he doesn’t know about the baby.” Ashley told her, she knew full well it was probably Harry, and she had no desire to see him.

Harry stood awkwardly on the step of Ashley’s house, holding the biggest bouquet of flowers he could find. The door was opened by an older lady, wearing a nurse’s uniform, “Where’s Ashley? Is she okay?” Harry whispered, all sorts of things running through his head.

“She’s fine, she just doesn’t want any visitors.” Dianne told him.

“But I need to make it up to her, I need to apologise.” Harry insisted.

“Sir, I’m afraid if you continue to be persistent I will have to call the police.” Dianne told him forcefully.

“Is everything okay?” Lou asked,walking up the road towards Ashlet’s house, she had been looking after Daisy while Dianne visited Ashley. Daisy stood beside her, holding her hand.

“Harry!” Daisy slipped her hand from Lou’s, running into his arms, “I missed you Harry, I’m a proper big girl now!” She exclaimed.

“I missed you too princess, it’s so good to see you,” Harry held her tight as a single tear rolled down his face.

“I don’t think this is a good idea Harry, if Ash sees-”

“I don’t see what the problem is Lou,” Harry replied.

“Sir, I’m going to have to ask you to let Daisy come inside and then I need you to leave.” Dianne insisted.

“What is going on? I have no clue who you are so why should I trust you with Daisy?” Harry replied.

Ashley was watching the commotion unfold from behind the curtain, she couldn’t watch it go on much longer, and she didn’t want the neighbours involving themselves. “Harry.” She said softly, appearing at the front door, he looked up at her, noticing the bump, and the look on her face.

“You’re pregnant?” His voice wobbled.

“Yeah I am, can we have this conversation inside? Lou, would Daisy be able to go back to yours for a bit?”

“Of course.” Lou smiled, taking Daisy from Harry’s arms.

The pair made their way into the living room, both aware of how difficult this conversation would be, “Why didn’t you tell me Ash?” Harry asked, placing the flowers on the side.

“I never really knew how to, you weren’t here, and part of me wanted to be sure that when you came back it would be for me, not for the baby.” Ashley told him.

“Did you not think I deserved to know?” Harry asked.

“Do you not think I deserved to have you by my side as I gave evidence against Will for beating me up after he found out about me and you?” Ashley replied bluntly.

“I know I messed up.”

“You can say that again.” Ashley remarked.

“You’re the most important thing in my life Ash, I need you more than anyone else.”

“It’s too late for that.” Ashley told him.

“But what about us? What about the baby?” Harry asked, “We’re good together Ash, you know that.”

“Are we though? We were together for two months, we barely spent any time together before I got pregnant, Daisy starts school in September, I can’t leave London just to follow you around the world.”

“I’m not asking you to do that Ash, I’m asking you for another chance.” Harry replied.

“We can’t be those people Harry,” Ashley told him, “You’ll still see the baby, you’ll still be their dad, I just can’t do this to myself, I can’t let myself love you more than I already do, only to be let down again. Whenever you’re in America all it does is drive a wedge between us.”

“What did you want me to do? Drop everything and come back?” Harry said.

“Yes Harry, because that is what being in a relationship comes down to. Sacrifice.” Ashley cried, “I think you need to leave now.”

“Before I go, who else knows about the baby?” Harry asked.

“Lou, Lottie, Niall and Louis.” Ashley whispered, knowing how much it would hurt him.

“So our mums don’t know?” Harry asked.

“No. Because I knew what would happen if they did.”

“I want you to know, you never have to worry about a custody battle, I don’t want to take a baby away from their mum.” Harry assured her.

“Goodbye Harry.”

“Goodbye Ash.” As Harry left Ashley’s house he felt as though he could crumble right there on the pavement outside her house, he loved Ashley in ways he had never loved anyone else and he didn’t want a life without her.

Harry had a habit of turning up at Gemma’s house unannounced when he was upset, there he stood on her doorstep as she opened the door to her brother with tear stained cheeks. “Come here H,” She wrapped her arms around him, rubbing his back as he sobbed into her shoulder.

“I’ve ruined everything Gem.” he cried.

“It can’t be that bad H,” she assured him.

“Ash is pregnant, and she doesn’t want me back, she doesn’t want to let herself get hurt again.” He told her.

“Oh Harry, come on, let's get you a drink so you can explain properly.” She led him into the kitchen, taking a glass and pouring him some of Michael’s whiskey. “I’m lost, so Ash is pregnant?”

“When did you last see her?” Harry asked.

“It must have been the Brits, we had planned to have a picnic for Daisy’s birthday but she said she was unwell, so I guess that was because of the baby.” Gemma told him.

“She said she didn’t tell me because she wanted me to come back because of her, not because of the baby. I get that, I do, I think I just assumed she would always be there, and that I’d never lose her, but I was so wrong wasn’t I?” Harry sighed, downing his glass of whiskey in one go before pouring another one.

“Harry you are Ash’s world, her heart beats for you, I don’t see this break, or whatever it is lasting, there’s no way you two could co-parent a child without ending up together again.” Gemma assured him.

“I know I should’ve come back Gem, and I wish I did, but I was scared that one day I’d break her heart, but it looks like I’ve already done the one thing I was scared of.” Harry sighed, fiddling with the rim of his glass.

“It’ll get better H, I promise.”

“Can I stay here tonight Gem? Home doesn’t really feel like home at the moment.”

“Of course you can H.”

The cool breeze of the summer evening came through the open window as Ashley sat on the living room floor, looking through old pictures of her and Harry. After putting Daisy to bed she put on one of Harry’s hoodies he had left before lockdown as the faint sound of When We Were Young by Adele came from her record player. She sifted through the pictures, remembering how much easier life was back then,pictures from the band’s first and last arena tours, pictures of Harry and Daisy when she was a little baby, her favourite picture of them both, which did nothing but shatter her heart. Those days when all she was to the world was their favourite candidate for Harry’s secret girlfriend, during the days of the band she was pictured with him constantly, she was blamed for his break up with Taylor and the failure of his on and off relationship with Kendall. That man meant everything to her, which made the pain even more unbearable, she didn’t want to let him go, but it was what she needed, and she knew that. A harsh knock on the door bought her out of her feels, she made her way to the hallway, opening the door to see Gemma, “Can I come in? Before you ask, Harry doesn’t know I’m here.” She told her.

“Sure,” Ashley smiled, leading her into the kitchen, not wanting Gemma to see the piles of old pictures on the floor in the living room.

“How have you been?” Gemma asked, noticing how red and puffy Ashley’s cheeks were.

“I’ll get there Gem, I’m just not in a place to raise two children while worrying about my relationship with Harry, I know he’s there for me emotionally, but with a four year old and another baby on the way, I need him there physically too.”

“I get that, and I know he’s going to be in and out of the country a lot, it’s his job, but he’ll never deprive you of time with your child. When he goes away the rest of us will all be here to support you.” Gemma told her.

Several days had passed and Linda had travelled down from Holmes Chapel to be with her daughter, she let herself into the house using her spare key. As she entered the living room she saw Ashley curled up on the sofa, cradling her baby bump. “Where’s Daisy?” Linda whispered, knowing Ashley wouldn’t want her to see her in this state.

“She stayed the night at Lou’s.” Ashley sniffed.

“And how are you sweetheart?” Linda asked, sitting beside her and allowing Ashley to rest her head in her lap.

“I didn’t know how much I needed Harry until I let him go.” Ashley whispered.

“I know angel, but it’s going to be alright in the end.”

The former One Direction star and solo artist reveals his plans to manage woman rock bands, and tackles those pesky One Direction rumours

While many artists would jump at the chance to tell you how lockdown has been a fruitful opportunity for self-improvement, full of pseudo self-help books and pompous podcasts, former One Directioner Louis Tomlinson is adamant that he has done, well, nothing.

“I’ve just watched loads of s___ TV,” he says after a long pause. “The Undoing is decent, isn’t it?”

Twenty-eight--year-old Tomlinson from Doncaster was always the down-to-earth Directioner, frequently describing himself as fringe member who spent more time analysing the band’s contracts than singing solos, known for chain-smoking his way through several packs of cigarettes a day and swearing like a trooper. A rarity, these days, among millennials who’d rather suck on a stem of kale and tweet about their #blessings.

Far from aimless, however, today the singer is full of beans, cheerily shushing his barking dog as he potters about his North London home where he lives with his best friend from home, Oli, and his girlfriend, the model Eleanor Calder.

He's getting ready to rehearse an exciting one-off gig that will be live-streamed from a secret London location on December 12, announced today exclusively via the Telegraph. The proceeds of the night will be split across four charities: The Stagehand Covid-19 Crew Relief Fund and Crew Nation, Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice and Marcus Rashford’s charity FareShare, to help end child poverty. Tomlinson will also be donating money to his own touring crew, many of which have been out of work since March. “I've been incredibly worried about them and felt incredibly powerless, so wanted to give something back.”

The gig also means a great deal to Tomlinson on a personal level. His first ever tour as a solo artist, to promote his debut solo album WALLS, was cut short back in March after just two concerts in Spain and Mexico. It was an album he’d spent five years working on: a guitar-led project that ruptured with the preppy pop anthems of One Direction, inspired instead by Tomlinson’s love for Britpop.

No doubt he was anxious to get it right following a decade “grown in test tubes”, as Harry Styles once described the band’s formation on the X Factor, where they came third before going on to make a reported $280,000 a day as the most successful band in the world. The pressure, too, was intense: all four bandmates had already released their own solo debuts.

Was he left reeling, I ask, unable to perform at such a crucial moment?

“The thing that I always enjoyed the most about One Direction was playing the shows, so my master plan, when I realised I was going to do a solo career, was always my first tour. It’s something I’ve been looking forward to for the best part of five years now. I got so close, I got a taste for it, and it’s affected me like everyone else, but I’m forever an optimist,” he says down the phone, with what I can only imagine to be a rather phlegmatic shrug.

Sure, I say, but the last year can’t have been easy. Didn’t he feel like his purpose had popped?

“You know what,” he says, reflecting, “maybe because I’ve had real dark moments in my life, they’ve given me scope for optimism. In the grand scheme of things, of what I’ve experienced, these everyday problems...they don’t seem so bad.”

Tomlinson is referring to losing his 43-year-old mother, a midwife, to leukemia in 2016, and his 18-year-old sister Felicite, a model, to an accidental drug overdose in 2018. The double tragedy is something he has been open about on his own terms, dedicating his single, Two of Us, from WALLS, to his mother Johannah, while often checking in with fans who have lost members of their own family.

It’s not unusual for Tomlinson to ask his 34.9 million followers if they’re doing alright, receiving hundreds of thousands of personal replies. It’s not something he will discuss in interviews, however, after he slammed BBC Breakfast for shamelessly probing his trauma in February this year. “Never going back there again,” he tweeted after coming off the show.

“Social media is a ruthless, toxic place, so I don’t like to spend much time there,” says Tomlinson, “but because of experiencing such light and shade all while I was famous, I have a very deep connection with my fans. They’ve always been there for me.”

In return, Tomlinson is good to them. Last month he even promised some new music, saying that he’d written four songs in four days. Does this mean that a second album is on the way?

“Yeah, definitely,” he says. “I’m very, very excited. I had basically penciled down a plan before corona took over our lives. And now it's kind of given me a little bit of time to really get into what I want to say and what I want things to sound like. Because, you know, I was really proud of my first record, but there were moments that I felt were truer to me than others. I think that there were some songs where I took slightly more risk and owned what I love, saying, ‘This is who I want to be’. So I want to take a leaf out of their book.”

Fans might think he’s referring to writing more heartfelt autobiographical content such as Two of Us, but in fact, he’s referring specifically to rock-inspired Kill My Mind, he says, the first song on WALLS. “There’s a certain energy in that song, in its delivery, in its attitude, that I want to recreate. People are struggling at the moment, so I want to create a raucous, exciting atmosphere in my live show, not a somber, thoughtful one.”

He sighs, trying to articulate something that’s clearly been playing on his mind for a while. “You know, because of my story, my album was a little heavy at times and a little somber. And as I'm sure you're aware, from talking to me, now, that isn't who I am.”

It must be draining, I say, the weight of expectation in both the media and across his fanbase, to be a spokesperson for grief and hardship. To have tragedy prelude everything he does and says.

“Honestly, it’s part of being from Doncaster as well, I don’t like people feeling sorry for me. That’s the last thing I want.”

The problem is, says Tomlinson, he doesn’t have the best imagination. “I have interesting things to say musically, but what’s challenging from a writing perspective is that I write from the heart, and I can’t really get into someone else’s story. And right now, being stuck at home, you have so little experience to draw from. It’s actually quite hard to write these positive, uplifting songs, because actually, the experiences that you're going through on a day to day basis, you know, you they don't have that same flavour.”

There is something that’s helping, though: a secret spot near Los Angeles, where he divides his time to see his four-year-old son, Freddie, whom he shares with his ex Briana Jungwirth, a stylist. “It’s remote and kind of weird, and I’m going to go there for three days and write. I don’t know why I’m so drawn to it. I found it via a YouTube video. It’s got some very interesting locals who live there, it’s sort of backwards when it comes to technology. It feels like you’re going back in time when you’re there. But I don’t want to give it away.”

Another source of inspiration for his second album is the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ back catalogue. “I grew up on their album Bytheway. And during lockdown I've been knee deep in their stuff. I’ve watched every documentary, every video. And I find their lead guitarist John Frusciante just fascinating.”

Has he spoken to Frusicante?

“I f______ wish,” snorts Tomlinson.

Surely someone as well-known as Tomlinson could easily get in touch?

“No, honestly, I think he’s too cool for that. He’s not into that kind of thing.”

Tomlinson’s passion for all things rock is also spurring on a side hustle he picked up as a judge on the X Factor in 2018: managing an all-female rock band via his own imprint on Simon Cowell’s Syco label. While the group disbanded before releasing their first single, and Tomlinson split from Syco earlier this year, the singer is keen to nurture some more talent.

“I'm not gonna lie, my process with my imprint through Syco, it became challenging and it became frustrating at times,” Tomlinson says a little wearily. “The kind of artists that I was interested in developing – because I genuinely feel through my experience in One Direction, you know, one of the biggest f______ bands, I feel like I've learned a lot about the industry – they weren’t ready-made. So I had lots of artists that I took through the door that were rough and ready, but major labels want to see something that works straight away. I found that a little bit demotivating. I love her and she's an incredible artist, but not everyone is a Taylor Swift.”

Tomlinson spends much of his free time scouting new talent either on YouTube, Reddit or BBC Introducing – he’s currently a huge fan of indie Brighton band, Fickle Friends. His dream is to manage an all-female band playing instruments. “Because there's no one in that space. And I know eventually if I don't do it, someone else will!”

Before he drives off to rehearsals, we chatter about how much he's been practising his guitar playing, and how he can't wait to take the whole team working at his favourite grassroots venue, The Dome in Doncaster, out ice-skating after he performs there on his rescheduled tour. “Because I've got skills,” he says, and I can hear his chest puff.

And then I ask the question every retired member of One Direction has been batting off ever since they broke up in 2015, after Zayn Malik quit. Rumours that his bandmates saw him as a Judas went wild after some eagle eyes fans noticed they’d unfollowed him on Instagram. Payne, Tomlinson, Horan and Styles have barely mentioned him since. Recently, however, they re-followed him, and Payne has teased that a One Direction reunion is on the cards.

So: might 2021 be the year of resurrection?

“I thought you were going to ask something juicier!” say Tomlinson witheringly. “Look, I f______ love One Direction. I'm sure we're going to come back together one day, and I'll be doing a couple of One Direction songs in my gig. I always do that, so that's not alluding to any reunion or anything. But, I mean, look, I'm sure one day we'll get back together, because, you know, we were f______ great.”

Hanna Moore (Mate and Fiancee): Hanna and Helo have been dating for 5 years. They met on an online dating app. The first time they met in public, Helo brought Louis with him, thinking it was a scam. Helo and Hanna clicked in person just like they did over the phone; adding Louis as their third party too. 6 months into their relationship, Helo asked Hanna to move and join his pack. A long distance relationship wasn’t hard, but Helo wanted her close and running CTRL, which was still new at the time, was becoming too much to leave for a weekend getaway. Helo does not reject the decision at all and does not think that they are moving too fast. He knows whether he is living until 90 or 400 years old, he wants to share his life with Hanna. Which is why he proposed and they are planning to start a life despite people thinking they will not last or will regret it. In the history of Adama’s there has never been a divorce and there are currently 30 living generations. While Helo does not want to add kids to their equation yet, he does see them there in the far future.

Platonic Connections:

Louis Martin-Rovet (Best Friend): Helo cannot remember when Louis and he became best friends or when they actually met. Every time a question about how they met comes up they both spin an outrageous elaborate story, coming up with it and crazy details as they go along. Despite their obvious age difference, Louis being older than Helo’s parents and maternal grandparents, the two of them might as well be brothers.

Theo ‘Hibachi’ Easton (Friend): Helo and Hibachi could easily be described as being your typical nerd buddies. Jim Montgomery (Unsure): Jim has been coming around more and more often. Helo is unsure as to why but also does not want to find out why either. Helo has been running micro surveillance cameras in and out of the police department for SKIN and is currently working on a credit card system for them. Hanna was in Fort Wayne, Indiana when they were matched, but the two commuted alternating weekends to make it work. Hanna eventually moved up to Chicago to be with Helo and join his pack. Hanna moved to Chicago only 6 months after meeting face to face for the first time. They celebrated their 5 years anniversary where Helo had proposed to Hanna. They are slowly planning their wedding much to everyone's cringe. A lot of people disapprove but Helo has always known what he wanted, and it has yet to come to bite him in the ass. Helo’s immediate family and his best friend, Louis seem to be the only ones that are in support of how quickly their relationship is moving.

Helo’s to-do-list has been overflowing for CTRL. He is slowly but surely knocking them all out by working overtime and pulling all nighters. Helo is working on big projects for BOND, GOLD, SKIN, RED and CAMO that has taken priority over other projects that he has been handing off to his team members. CTRL is currently without a second which Helo isn’t actively looking for but is willing to consider after missing an important wedding venue appointment.

Episode 17 has us down to 14 acts, but that still means we have 90 minutes to force ourselves through, and JESUS, GOD, DERMOT, LOUIS, LITTLE BLACK DRESS help me. I was in an Armstrong-mourning-induced haze last week, so I could have sworn we were promised Kylie tonight and Little Mix tomorrow, but there’s no Kylie in this one, boo, and clearly, a lot of time to fill in the results show on Sunday, so we’ll get BOTH tomorrow. That’s thinking ahead, though, and much like a petulant Harry Styles arguing with Niall Horan in the award-winning documentary, This Is Us, I live in the moment, so it’s time to recap tonight!! My usual caveats: this is for @newleafover and @justlarried because they will never, ever watch it, and I will not recap in all of these performances because I do not have time for that kind of pain. With that said, let’s do this!

I love him too much to embarrass him (or me) with pictures of Dermot go-go dancing his way on stage with some seriously British dancers, but it’s very “cringe” as Louis would say.

The theme is guilty pleasures, and Ayda and Louis are the only ones who coach their people to deliver on it. I mean, what kind of guilty pleasure is “Proud Mary”???

Simon is extra-ordinarily amped up for this entire 90 minutes, and all I can think about is the Popbitch story detailing his coke breaks, lmao.

The show’s budget looks like it graduated from Bic pens, but that doesn’t mean Louis’s not selling it for me (god, I still need a new one, credit where it’s due for this gif):

My new religion is Louis giving his critiques while simultaneously shutting Simon down; it’s a work of art that can only be captured in context because he’s, like, “comment, comment, shut up and stop clapping Simon, comment, comment,” and yeah, cosigned.

Me as Ayda dragging Simon for every single one of his unrecognizable, terrible song choices (and I say “his” because he overrides his team and makes them all pick different, awful songs throughout). My literal pleasure is watching Simon get flustered and try to defend himself before accepting responsibility because he hates to lose, and that’s what’s going to happen for everyone but Shan.

Hey, if you had to guess based off this picture, who’s in charge of this show?

It’s both gross and amusing to see Simon finally wake up and recognize the AMAZING black talent on this series (he can argue all day long about how Bella is a star in the making, but anyone with eyes and ears can see that Shan, Dalton, and Acacia & Aaliyah are the ones to beat).

The sun still shines out of Dermot's ass, and I still wonder what is cracking Louis up so fucking hard in this shot:

Take a drink every time Simon uses his middle finger to scratch his eye; unrelated, but I’m low-key dying for his, “We had a nice chat together,” with a contestant on a different team because he’s trying to pull a Louis, and OVIOUSHLY, Louis has talked to all of them, but Simon has barely phoned it in with his own team, so, sure, Jan.

Brendan is my own personal form of torture, but Louis’s not letting anyone on his team go down without a fight, so I’m here both for his BDE coaching (not pictured; it’s too much) and his cheerleading (his face doesn’t move, but he gives it the full foam finger point):

Dalton, godddd, I love him, outstanding song choice, outstanding performance (the crowd goes WILD), and I can’t capture it, but outstanding deadpan impersonation of Louis’s “oi oi oi” (special shoutout to the random Little Mix [?] poster in all of Louis’s team’s scenes):

Lots of acts perform, and then we get to Gio, who does a very “rock opera in the west end” version of “…Baby One More Time” (I’ll be honest, Travis does it better if you want histrionic, seemingly straight dudes covering it). Louis says he’s “the most polite guy that I've ever met, boot, it was just one step too weird and too intense for me” (he's so right), and then we get Ayda saying, “Real men wear pink, real rockstars sing Britney,” and I love how the camera IMMEDIATELY cuts away from Louis the second she says “pink,” lmao, okay, then. Also, Ayda does a fairly decent Britney impersonation?? Anyway, I’m here for Dermot calling out how Gio looks like both Willem Dafoe AND Nosferatu because he’s not wrong:

Next up is Ant’ony (Mark Wahlberg’s British cousin), who picks “I Wanna Know What Love Is” as his guilty pleasure because his dad used to drive around and play it in the car, and Ant’ony would “stare into forests and fields and that.” There’s a lot of good content from Louis with Ant’ony in the X Factor house, but this is my summary in general, the embodiment of hahahahahaha:

After he’s done, we get Ayda praising Louis for getting the theme right, and then one of my fave moments of the night, Louis capturing the feeling of when the entire crowd is booing your boss, and you’re just trying to sell some pens, but you’d still stab him in the neck if you could (the head tilt he goes through is pure “try me, bitch”):

United Vibe (which I ALWAYS hear as United Five) comes out and does a predictably terrible job, so I won’t bore you with any of the particulars except to say that this is the high point of Ayda’s digs at Robbie (which have been consistent throughout the night), and this one cracks me up both for Louis’s reaction (it’s so pure and cackly):

And for Robbie’s (I mean, she’s not wrong: has ANYONE picked a Robbie song for a party in the USA?):

Bella’s indicative of Simon’s problems, and it’s hilarious to see him waking up to realize the terrible song choice and terrible shit happening on stage (as Louis says, “not sure what the moody guys behind you in shades are doing”), and Simon does his best to apologize because she’s a “star,” and meanwhile, she got upstaged by more than half the people on here tonight (and that said, it’s one of her better songs).

The show ends with Janice and the infamous Robbie/Louis camp discussion. Louis says it’s “a great vocal, but I found the creative to be a little bit cringe, it didn't really resonate with me,” etc. (AGAIN, he’s not wrong), and Robbie counters with, “Louis’s from Doncaster, and there's no camp people in Doncaster…at all…so he wouldn't get it,” and I personally read it as tongue in cheek (Robbie’s delivery is very dry, and this is Louis’s face, no eye-rolling, just tongue rolling):

So, make of that what you will, but I’d love to hear what anyone who saw it beyond gifs had to say! Oh, and hello to the person who hate-reads these recaps and calls them "fake" (how dare you, I spend actual, real time watching this garbage).

I don't really know how to summarize this... but at its most basic the story is set in a world where humans and supernatural beings exist, except that humans of course are unaware of the supernatural world. It's a messy story where Liam and Zayn fall in love, but it's not solely focused on their relationship. This means that if you're just expecting to read about ziam only, then this story probably isn't for you. This story is not just about romantic love, but about friendship and family love too. It starts out with Normani, Zayn, and Louis, who kind of set the tone of the story and it all develops from there. Dinah is 27, Louis is 26, Zayn is 25, and Normani is 20. Liam and Niall are 23. Ally, Harry, and Lauren don't have any concrete ages so yeah.

Zayn looks out at the sea of faces staring back at him, fights down the anxiety still threatening to overwhelm him even though he’s almost through now. He’d known this wouldn’t be easy, but there’s so many of them, looking to him. And seeing all of them here, now, in front him—even if it still isn’t all of them—is a bit overwhelming. A SJPR Case Study: Hiatus to Early 2017

Since the “how do we know that SJPR is really fucking Louis over?” anons have been going around again, I thought I’d make a bit of a timeline/case study with some observations about SJPR’s promo tactics. We all know this stuff has been happening for years, but it’s pretty wild to see everything compiled into one place.

@theyrereallyawful made a great couple of posts that inspired me to look deeper into this arena of thought, so check those posts out if you haven’t seen them yet.

Some of this is going to analyze the 1D promo that happened around the HJPR split, and some of this is going to compare Niall/Louis SJPR promo.

For more of an in-depth post about Louis and Niall’s SJPR involvement, check my other post in this tag. I recommend reading both posts to get the full perspective.

Information/observation dump below the cut! All of this is speculation and shouldn’t be taken as 100% fact - I just wanted to throw some food for thought into the void. This is a really long post, be warned.

We’ll start briefly at the beginning!

Early SJPR

On December 1st, 2015, HJPR split up. They were a UK PR firm that represented One Direction, among other acts. The split wasn’t very widely reported, aside from some PR-specific news outlets.

Simon Jones, the “J” in HJPR, took One Direction with him as his client.

I’m going to compare the UK online press from before and after the HJPR split, just for kicks.

Before the HJPR split, when HJPR had control of 1D UK promo:

September 20, 2015 to October 3, 2015:

A few filler articles, but most of them stick to the plot and talk about the AMF performance and MITAM. Not bad.

Earlier articles from August 2, 2015 to August 8, 2015:

That’s an entire page of the top results, and it only has a single baby article and two Zayn articles. Again, not too bad.

**To clarify: I’m not making broad generalizations of 1D PR under HJPR overall. This is just an analysis of the PR immediately before and after the split.

Let’s look at the post-HJPR-split articles.

At this point, SJPR was the one doing the UK promo for 1D.

December 20, 2015 to December 26, 2015:

As you can see, the top articles are quite a bit different from the ones before the HJPR split. All of them focus on the Simon Cowell & Zayn feud, and Louis’ stunting.

Here’s some from a little while later, after the HJPR split had “settled”:

January 4, 2016 to January 11, 2016:

Aside from the few articles about the Family Guy appearance, most of them are, again, about stunts.

The focus shift is pretty clear from the pre-HJPR split to post-HJPR split coverage. Pre-split, HJPR covered music/career news. Post-split, SJPR immediately began to cover primarily stunts.

Let’s look at the official SJPR site.

SJPR Site

The “news” section of the site is a very interesting place to make observations. This content is directly from SJPR - they publish news on their more important clients, presumably to show how good they are at doing their jobs. (suppress your laughter, I know.)

It’s abundantly clear, however, that certain clients receive much more of SJPR’s effort than others.

I’m going to zoom out on most of these articles so that this post doesn’t get too long - I just want you to get an idea for how much content is put into each article. The lengths differ quite obviously. I’ll link each of them if you want to read the body of the article.

The first article about 1D was posted on December 30, 2015, a month after the HJPR split. It’s about “History” dropping as the new single:

It’s fairly short, only a few paragraphs. In all honesty, it’s the best 1D article that’s posted for the entirety of 2015 and beyond. The rest of them go far downhill, as you’ll see.

It covers the fact that “History” was chosen as the single and throws in an X Factor mention. This is also the only 1D article that has SM links included.

The article was published a bit late, as the single was chosen halfway through December, but maybe SJPR was still having growing pains with the recent HJPR split on December 1st, 2015.

We’ll give them the benefit of the doubt for now, because this article doesn’t seem particularly odd......until you compare it to the previous article, the very first article posted to the SJPR news section.

This article, about Ant and Dec meeting the Prince, is WAY longer than the 1D article. It’s probably three to four times the length.

Sure, Ant and Dec meeting the Prince is a big deal. But it’s a little odd that the final 1D single before their hiatus gets so little coverage in comparison, no?

And besides, it’s not like 1D getting the short end of the SJPR promo stick is a trend, right? Right??

Oh.

1D gets a brief article - literally only a few sentences - for the Family Guy appearance, with no SM links, and Fearne Cotton gets a much longer and more involved article for a new gig.

Okay, so maybe that was just a one-off coincidence? Right?

One Direction, biggest pop band on the planet, gets a three-sentence wrap-up article for the success of MITAM, History, and the release of the History MV. No SM links included.

Meanwhile, Emma Bunton gets a 9-paragraph article for hosting Too Much TV.

The trend continues.

One Direction gets a two sentence article for winning a Brit in 2016. No SM links provided.

By comparison, All Saints gets a far longer article for their single.

So the trend is fairly obvious - One Direction always gets the short end of the promo stick as far as SJPR’s site goes. I get that this isn’t the most earth-shattering information, but I think it speaks volumes if you listen.

Think about it: if SJPR isn’t even willing to put effort into news articles about arguably their biggest client, then how much effort are they going to put into the actual PR SJPR provides?

SJPR and Louis

Let’s go back to the press from the Feb ‘16 time period, and let’s start looking at Louis-specific press now.

Feb 14, 2016 to Feb 29, 2016 - The Brits happen on the 24th and 1D takes home an award with Liam and Louis present to accept. Here’s the press that results, using both “Louis Tomlinson” and “One Direction” search queries.

Yes, that’s a grand total of three articles about the Brits, which could’ve been a really great publicity point for 1D to have early on in the hiatus. The rest of the articles are about the baby, the girlfriend, the baby “mama”... You name it.

Let’s move on to the press that happens later in the hiatus.

Late 2016

SJPR’s 1D/Louis/Niall content in the news section dropped to radio silence after February ‘16, aside from one Niall and one Louis article about Soccer Aid. These two were actually uncharacteristically good - lots of info about the cause, and the only good Louis article in the entire news section.

I assume that’s because Soccer Aid was tied to Niall. In my other post comparing Niall vs. Louis, you’ll see that Niall receives much better treatment from SJPR. This is enforced by the Brits article from SJPR’s site. Louis is tied to Liam, a non-SJPR client, so it was only two sentences long. As long as Louis is directly tied to Niall, he gets Niall’s level of SJPR promo. Otherwise, it’s back to radio silence.

Now, I don’t know if anyone took over for the UK promo from Feb to September of 2016, but SJPR did not cover 1D, Liam, or Harry - they only covered Niall and Louis for Soccer Aid, as I just mentioned.

I’d assume that SJPR just dropped Niall and Louis to “low priority” while the guys’ solo projects were still being completed. They also could have been on temporary management of Louis/Niall while deals were being finalized, so they weren’t exerting as much effort as they usually would have. (I use “effort” loosely, of course.)

This makes some sense when you remember that lots of the big conspiracy articles about babygate slipped through the cracks and gained momentum during these few months of official SJPR site silence. I’m thinking of the Buzzfeed one in particular, which gained extremely widespread publicity and reached a lot of the GP in early April 2016.

On September 29, 2016, Niall signs to Capitol Records and UA’s report that his SJPR involvement will officially continue. “This Town” is released on September 29 as well.

Let’s take a look at Niall’s press from just prior to the single release, just for comparison’s sake. This was before SJPR officially took over again, so they were still possibly on “autopilot” or “temporary” privileges. Most of these articles are driven by other sources that would’ve had their own teams to drive his indirect promotion - Ryder Cup, Shawn Mendes, etc.

September 25, 2016 to September 28, 2016

All positive articles.

Onto the articles from the days immediately after the single release, and therefore the continuation of official SJPR involvement.

September 29, 2016 to October 1, 2016:

There’s no obvious shift in tone here - all positive articles about the single (aside from the “retrogressive” comment from The Guardian), and the stuff that’s not about the single is still positive cross-promo.

SJPR finally broke their 1D radio silence and posted a news article about Niall on the day of the release. It sets the tone for all of their subsequent Niall articles - most of them are involved and well-written, and SM links are always included. More on that in the other post I made comparing Louis and Niall’s SJPR experiences.

As I just stated, there was no obvious shift in Niall articles between pre-SJPR continuation and post-SJPR continuation.

Louis, however? That’s a different story.

His official continuation with SJPR happened on January 7, 2017.

Here’s some of the press from just prior to the continuation - that’s all I’m looking at right now, the press immediately before it, not overall.

November 20, 2016 to December 3, 2016.

Oddly good, right? No stunting to be found, aside from a single baby article that’s from a celeb baby site. There’s even an article about Niall apparently confirming Larry, which we’d probably never see now, lol.

January 7, 2017 - SJPR continuation is made official. Now to look at the press that resulted immediately after SJPR took Louis on as a client again.

January 7, 2017 to January 10, 2017:

Ah. So that’s what a focus shift looks like.

January 22, 2017 to January 27, 2017:

Rather night-and-day from the pre-SJPR news coverage and the “Niall confirming Larry” article, no?

And just for continuity’s sake: later on in the year, the trend was still the same.

April 16, 2017 to May 9 2017:

Stunts galore, and not a single mention of music.

I think the “promo” from Summer 2017 and beyond is still fresh in our minds, so I won’t recap that. The same press trends continue to occur - all stunts, all the time.

Conclusions: TL;DR

One Direction’s HJPR promo immediately prior to the HJPR split was generally good

As soon as SJPR took over, stunting clearly became the focus of UK online promo

SJPR dedicated very little time and energy to 1D accomplishments on their official site, but they seemed to have BUCKETS of energy to spare when it came to their other (far less famous/successful) clients

From Feb to Sept 2016, press control was generally more lax - babygate conspiracy articles gaining widespread publicity - but stunt coverage still continued (this may have tied into one of the prior possible end dates of BG that was likely extended)

Niall promo and Louis promo began to diverge after Niall officially continued with SJPR

There was a brief lapse in stunty content just before Louis officially continued with SJPR, but they quickly made up for it with the months of bullshit he’s been enduring in the UK promo world since then

As I mentioned before, this post is merely a collection of observations and patterns, nothing more. In my other post in this tag, I talk more about how Niall and Louis’ SJPR support clearly differs.

If anyone actually read this whole thing, props to you! I didn’t think anyone would get this far - I genuinely enjoy doing this kind of research and was compiling it more for my own thought process than anything. So if you got through everything, then you deserve another happy Louis:

Here are a bunch of words that nobody asked for!

I think something that’s very telling, especially after hearing Niall’s album, is that while Harry has the biggest team, the most hype and all the money behind him, it’s blatantly obvious that out of all the 1D boys he has the least amount of talent. It’s not that he doesn’t have talent, I’m not saying that at all, but I think the solo projects have shed a light on just how far behind he really is. (His unwillingness to accept help from others doesn’t help either.) But if you look at their solo songs, Louis is the lyrics, Liam is the beats and melodies, Zayn is the voice and Niall is the whole package. They all have great musical ability and have managed to tap into sounds that while distinct from each other, still resonate with the general public and a wide array of music fans. So where does that leave Harry?

His album appears to be an attempt at some sort of indie-chic alternative sound that did nothing but borrow heavily from existing music with lyrics that leave a lot to be desired. He claims to have written music that is open and honest, but one look at the lyrics will show that they are awkward, repetitive and intentionally vague. (Meaning the writer knows what they mean, but no one else does.) So the end result are lyrics that are completely nonsensical to everyone else listening to them. For example, his song “Kiwi” (which has it’s problems for other reasons), but aside from the fact that the title makes absolutely no sense and the phrase “it’s none of your” is repeated a staggering 22 times, there is a line that says “When she’s alone, she goes home to a cactus”. Why not just say “she goes home to a prick”? It would convey more anger on the part of the narrator and would act as more jarring point. It would also be a decidedly more “rock” lyric as that is what he is going for. Or maybe he really does mean that she lives alone and has arid house plants. Who knows? At any rate, it just feels like he is trying way too hard. He desperately needs to let others have opinions and guide him if he ever wants to truly grow into music.

Unfortunately, what ability is there is being wasted because in true Azoff fashion, it is more important to be a brand than an artist. It’s a page right out of the Kardashian playbook. Being famous for being famous. Buying up undeserved accolades, interviews, tv shows and awards do nothing but drive up Harry’s price tag. And that’s the point. Irving Azoff is selling a product and he wants to be able to demand top dollar for said product. So the more widely known Harry’s name is, regardless of the reasons for that notoriety, the more money he can demand for appearances and performances. In her hey-day, Paris Hilton was being paid over 100K just to show up at a night club and be papped there.

Harry, to me, seems stuck in a strange dichotomy. He is desperate to appeal to the neckbeard male hipsters because he’s thinks their support equals respect, but his staunchest supporters remain the young girls of the mainstream pop world. So he is left awkwardly (and poorly) playing both sides. His desired crowds are too busy camping at outdoor music festivals and complaining about everyone in mainstream music being a sellout, (like those with $80 million dollar record deals) and the fans actually keeping him afloat are rapidly growing tired of being ignored. You don’t get to pick and choose who your fans are and you shouldn’t want to. Who your fans are should not be a measure of the respect that you have. Music is for everyone. Regardless of age, race, or anything else. All of the other 1D boys embrace their fans, whoever they are, and the end result is something magical. They are happy and having fun as are their fans. I don’t think there is too much fun to be had in Harry land at the moment. And that’s a shame.

Regardless of the bought and paid for hype surrounding him, numbers don’t lie and right now Harry is doing the worst out of all the 1D lads. But the only one who can change that is Harry. Maybe he doesn’t want to. Maybe he just wants to be famous for being famous because it’s easier. He claims to love music, but I for one don’t see the passion there. But is it just a lack of passion or does it also stem from a lack of talent? Without the rest of the group acting as a buffer, the cold harsh reality appears that Harry just isn’t a strong songwriter. So it’s up to him if he wants to find some humility and listen to advice from others with more experience or not going forward. Meanwhile, the other boys’ stars will continue to rise, while Harry simply circles the drain.

It’s been so long since i’ve done one of these, but here are some of the fics i’ve enjoyed since I did my last fic rec.

On the Cover of the Rollin’ Stone by alivingfire 11K *this was super cute. loved that the songs used in the fic were all songs from the boys’ solo careers.

Five days, three shows. Harry, Louis, Liam, and Niall have been best friends forever, basically, but they’ve only been a band for six months and they’re already going on tour.

Well. Liam says they can’t call it a tour because all the shows are within an hour of home and they could pretty easily just drive back and forth but no, Liam is wrong, because they were booked in hotel rooms by their manager (Gemma) and they have a stylist (Lottie) and they’ve even been announced on the venue websites and this is the greatest start in the history of rock n’ roll.

Harry, Louis, Liam, and Niall are in a punk band and Louis can't stop writing love songs about Harry, even when Harry has his eye on someone else.

“What?” Harry squeaked.

Harry felt something electric pass between them. He felt the need to take a step forward, call Louis’ bluff, see if he was more bark than bite.

Sweeter Than Wine by Anonymous 15K *special shout out because this fic was written for me for the PotterDirectionFicExchange! This was incredibly cute and I really appreciate whoever wrote this for writing a lovely story for my prompt!

When Wizard!Louis goes to a muggle club for a change of pace, his one night stand ends up being much more than he bargained for.

After being blindsided and dumped by his boyfriend Isaac, Louis does the only thing he can do: wallow and mope. But when Harry tells Louis that karma’s going to get Isaac eventually, Louis decides karma isn’t moving fast enough. @mildlymaddy, what better way to celebrate your birthday than to write something in a genre that you love and I loathe with all my heart? Here you go, a fluffy lilo KIDFIC (??!?!) with tomlinshaw pining, canon-compliant hoodie sharing, and just a spot of lourry angst…

Almost two months, and Louis still hasn’t met the baby. He hasn’t meant to put it off. It’s just that there are so many other things to do, and he and Liam are barely on the same continent these days anyway.

Today’s the day he decided that’s unacceptable. So he’s driving to Surrey, even after a full day shooting in Doncaster, even though he knows it’s a bad night for it. Liam’s probably knackered after getting back from the states on an overnight flight. And part of Louis knows that even without the jetlag, Liam would rather have a quiet evening with his little family.

But their friendship has always been based on Louis pushing boundaries and Liam ending up glad that he did, so Louis hadn’t bothered to ask how Liam felt about him showing up. He’d just announced he was coming, and he doesn’t feel one bit bad about it.

Nor does he feel bad about showing up the night before Liam goes on the Breakfast Show. You can stay up all night and still do the Breakfast Show just fine. God knows Nick and Harry have proved that.

Louis never got the chance to. Nick was the place Harry went that wasn’t Louis, the next chapter after the inexplicable fuel source that kept the too-bright too-hot flame of their friendship burning finally ran out. Being friendly with Nick would have felt like chasing after Harry with a knife and flint, trying to coax a spark onto something dead.

It’s after dark by the time he pulls up to Liam’s house. Cheryl answers the door, in yoga pants and a ponytail. “You look lovely,” Louis tells her, and means it.

“Thank you, love, it almost sounds like the truth when you say it,” she says, pulling him into a hug. “Come on inside, the baby’s sleeping on top of Liam.”

Cheryl turns to lead him into the living room. From behind, Louis can see a ghostly spot of baby sick on the back of her shirt. “He a good sleeper, then?”

“Both of them, yeah.” Cheryl smiles back at him.

Liam’s stretched out on the couch with Bear on his chest, tucked up in a ball with Liam’s arm holding him in place. There’s a load of unfolded laundry on the other couch, all baby blankets and onesies and tiny flannels.

Louis pushes aside several rattles and squeaky toys and sits on the coffee table next to them. “Hey,” he says, reaching one finger out to smooth over the fuzz on the back of the baby’s head. “Welcome aboard, little man.”

Liam beams, eyes tired but as happy as Louis has ever seen him. “He’s great, right?”

“Of course he is.” Louis touches the bottom of one tiny foot. “Congratulations.”

“You want him?” Liam gestures with his free hand, offering the baby to Louis.

“You sure? Never wake a sleeping baby.”

“He’s due to eat soon anyway,” Liam says. “Here, take him.”

Louis stands and scoops up Bear, who barely stirs when Louis situates him against his shoulder. He falls into the rhythm of holding a baby without even thinking about it, shifting his weight from side to side.

Bear’s practically weightless in his arms. He realizes, suddenly, how big Freddie’s gotten. Louis tips his head down to inhale the warm scent of baby shampoo and sour milk, and looks up to see that Liam’s got his phone out taking their picture.

Bear sleeps long enough for Louis to ask Liam all of the standard baby questions, how he’s sleeping and how he’s eating and what happened the night he was born. Then he wakes up and is willing to let Louis jolly him along for a few more minutes while he and Liam have a choppy half-conversation about video shoots and promo schedules.

“Breakfast Show tomorrow, then?” Louis finally asks. Bear squirms in his arms.

It’s not a question about Nick, not really. Louis makes it a policy not to ask about Nick, or even to notice him.

Liam nods. “Yeah, it’ll be good to see Grim.”

Louis hums noncommittally. Bear squawks and pushes away from his shoulder.

Louis mostly manages not to notice Nick’s long legs and big hands. It’s harder not to notice how Nick always seems so delighted with everything, tells every story like it’s the funniest thing that’s ever happened to him.

“I’ll tell him you said hi,” Liam says.

“…sure,” Louis says, after a moment, as Bear’s disgruntlement crescendos.

Sometimes Louis wonders if he could manage to annoy Nick enough to get underneath that exterior of gentle banter and amused self-deprecation, or if Nick would be just as delighted by Louis as he is about everything else. He doesn’t think too hard about which outcome he’d prefer.

Bear arrives at full-on tears, and Louis recognizes that professional intervention is called for. “Cheryl!” he yells, just as she swoops into the room.

She retrieves the baby from him, automatically falling into the same baby-bouncing sway Louis had. It’s much more effective when Cheryl does it. “Bedtime,” she says, smiling at Liam as she heads toward the stairs.

Liam watches her go. It’s obvious he’d like to follow. “Want to see the nursery?” he asks Louis, hopefully.

“Sure,” Louis says, although he doesn’t particularly care about the nursery. But he’s got a half-idea in his head, and being upstairs could help.

Cheryl’s in the middle of undressing the baby when they get to the nursery. Liam joins her at the changing table, chattering sweetly to Bear and letting him grab his fingers while Cheryl efficiently deals with his nappy.

“Pass me the cream?” she asks. Liam hands her a tube of something from his side of the baby. One finger’s still in Bear’s clutches, and Liam doesn’t miss a beat in the one-sided conversation he’s conducting.

Louis knows the contours of this routine, although it’s strange to see it done as a team. Feeding and songs in the half-light of the nursery come next. He’d only be intruding if he stuck around.

This visit’s just about run its course, anyway. Nobody wants company for hours with a new baby, Louis remembers. You want company just long enough to adore the baby properly and to reassure you that people remember who you are outside your small cheerful prison of nappies and play mats and laundry.

“I’m off,” he announces, coming up behind Liam to hug him with one cheek pressed against his shoulder. “Thanks for letting me stop by. You’ve bred well.”

“Thanks for coming,” Liam says, turning around to hug him back. “You’re the first to meet him, of the boys, I mean.”

That feels wrong, but also right. “New favorite nephew,” Louis says into Liam’s shoulder. Liam feels skinnier.

Liam laughs. “I wish I could tell you you’re his favorite uncle, but I think Andy’s already got that one.”

“Think I’ll live,” Louis says as he turns to leave. “Good luck tomorrow,” he adds offhandedly, pulling the nursery door closed behind him.

He passes the half-opened double doors to the master bedroom on his way to the stairs. There’s a bassinet by the side of the unmade bed and an overlarge suitcase on the floor, clothes spilling out of it.

The half-idea in Louis’s head suddenly takes perfect form.

He slips through the opening in the door and paws over the contents of the suitcase until something catches his eye. A black hoodie with patches on it and blocky letters on the sleeve. One shoulder is that peachy-pink color that Liam’s been wearing lately. Louis likes it; it makes Liam look soft. Not like Harry’s aggressive pink.

He tugs the hoodie over his head and goes to preen in the mirror on the far side of the room. Perfect.

On his way back out the door, he skirts the edge of a baby blanket spread out on the carpet. Something gives under his foot, and Louis recognizes the gentle squeak of Sophie the Giraffe. He looks down to confirm. Sophie’s tangled up with… a pair of little crocheted nunchucks? Louis considers nicking them too; Freddie would love nunchucks.

He rejects the idea. Appropriating one of Liam’s innumerable hoodies seems like the kind of mildly monstrous behavior that will delight Liam (and, maybe, Nick). Stealing the coolest baby toy ever might be unforgivable.

The door to the nursery’s still closed when Louis trots downstairs and out the front door, hands tucked in the cuffs of the ill-begotten hoodie, smirking all the way back to Doncaster.

By the time he gets home, Liam’s due to wake up in an hour or two. Louis finds a well-lit corner and takes a selfie, eyes bugged out and lips stretched in flat-line smile, pointing at the pink patch on the shoulder of the hoodie. He sends it to Liam.

It’s the kind of story Liam might tell Nick, when Nick asks him about the others. If Nick asks him about the others.

Nick’s always making guests call people.

Louis keeps his phone on, just in case.

YES YES YES. Of course i read fics. I read them everywhere, shamelessly. On the train, on the subway, at college, at family dinners (that one was risky, i must admit). JAJAJA. But sadly i have too many fics on the “to read” list. Same!! I read fics everywhere. I don’t worry to much about my family knowing I’m reading, bc no one understands English. But I freak out every time I let my iPad with a fic opened, bc they can see Harry’s or Louis’ name and I don’t want them to know I’m reading about them,😅😅. I run out of fics to read sometimes! That’s how much I read, jajajja. They’re always part of my bedtime routine, jajajjajaa. And, well, I was reading a fic, I liked it a lot, but I checked the author and she’s a bit “questionable”, so… I’ll reserve my opinion, if you don’t mind. I read someone’s opinion on the fact that people write stories about Harry and Louis, but then they don’t think they’re gay (as in part of LGBT+ community), and believe Louis is a dad, and all the rest. And they said why that is wrong, bc they’re fetishizing gay relationships. And it made sense. And if a queer person (I don’t know if I can use that word, sorry) says that, I have to believe it, y'know. So, when I read a fic from an author I don’t know, I check their blog, just to see. And I saw that, so I won’t be sharing the fic, sorry (which is a pity, but… 🤷🏻‍♀️)

Pd: waaaa, I almost forget about my limo (liam,jajja). Well, I was going to bed, but before it I looked out the window, and called him. I was calling for a good half an hour. And then a black cat appeared, and I thought hey! they are coming! Then another black and wait cat came. And I didn’t stop calling Liam. And HE CAME!!! He came to my window, where Honey and I were. And I told him to jump, but his so fat… jajajjaa. So I called at my house phone so my mom would go to open the backdoor, and I went out from the front door. And when I reached my window he was up there, but he couldn’t go in, bc I had closed it, so Honey wouldn’t go out. And he jumped and went to the back door to wait for my mom no open the door, and then he run and run till my room, jajajaj, to see if there was food in his bowl. And, just that. They I “bath” him. And gave him a pill to desparasitarle(?), and put him a collar para las pulgas? Jajaja. And then I feed him. He was exhausted and hungry. My poor boy.
