Ok oh my god. OH MY GOD. I just saw treasure planet for the first time and It was fucking amazing. Like yeah Duh I KNOWWW i know it’s like. “underrated Disney movie bla bla it was a commercial failure” . You know the deal.

But if there is 1 thing I want to say:

I cannot emphasize enough how meaningful and touching it is to the audience when you allow your male main characters to cry, and hug, and be emotionally vulnerable without shame. That brought this film to a whole new level 🥺

its a beautiful movie that took so many creative risks and that’s so admirable. It’s so clear they had a vision and they crafted that vision with endless amounts of love :’] I DID CRY.

I was CONSISTENTLY delighted by how creative the characters were and incredibly entertained throughout. So fucking fun and engaging and it feels like a 2 hour movie so much happens. How is it only 1.5 hours.

I CRIED !!!!!!!!!! John Silver and Jim’s relationship was so COMPLEX like actually amazing. The father figure dynamic is so sweet and heartwarming and so heartbreaking simultaneously like I was not expecting that AMV montage in the middle like that shit cut me so deep it was outstanding. A montage about Jim’s troubled childhood with a neglectful absent father and then DIRECTLY PARALLELING THAT WITH HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH SILVER. LIKE HES FINALLY OVERCOMING THOSE FEELINGS AND LIVING HIS LIFE. GODDAMN!!! THATS SO POWERFUL!! THATS SO INCREDIBLE!!! THATS JUST IN THE MOVIE!!!!??!

Also the character/creature designs are RELENTLESS in how good they are. And they have so much fun with it. It’s so silly.

They had an old snapping turtle pirate???? hello?? He was introduced and then he died ❤️

The animation is also MIND BLOWINF like OH MY GOD!??? the seamless integration of 2D and 3D interacting is so impressive especially for 2001 like this was a technological feat for sure . Only rarely does the CG look dated (those whales at the start <\3 poor guys) BUT JOHN SILVER’S CYBORG ARM WAS FUCKING AMAZING LIKE I COUKD STARE AT THAT THING FOR HOURS .

Can’t find a gif of it but during his introduction there was a ROTATING SHOT of him cooking (❤️) while using his arm and his arm has so many tools inside it like a cyborg Swiss Army knife it’s the coolest fucking thing ever. Just Amazing

Also the fact they introduced an entirely new character 53 minutes in when the main cast has already been established was such a risk, but it so paid off. I love B.E.N. The fact he’s fully 3D animated and he’s THAT expressive. WHILE BEING A ROBOT? adorable. He’s Adorable. He’s so mentally ill and strange.

Captain Amelia was fucking awesome for the first half of the movie. One of the best characters. Yeah. ……………. They fumbled her so hard. MAYBE ITS JUST ME BUT ME AND MY FRIEND WERE NOT A FAN OF HER AND DELBERT AT ALL. Disney was like. We have a competent woman character ! Competent woman has to get injured and then the incompetent man has to take care of her and then they HAVE to fall in love. It’s actually so tragic like they did NOT deserve her.

IN FACT HERE’S MY SCORCHING HOT TAKE: Delbert should’ve been the one to get injured and Amelia nurses him back to health. Delbert might apologize profusely because of his self confidence issues and cuz he internalizes things that go wrong as his fault. Amelia reassures him, realizing that she was too harsh on him earlier. Delbert becomes less intimidated by her because she opens up to him and they grow to trust one another. Amelia stays with him while Jim goes to hide. And whapow !!!! Same relationship is built up without disempowering a female character. It doesn’t even have to be romantic they can just be friends……. 🫶 cuz it comes off as weird because since the start Delbert was like “wtf the captain is a GIRL?? Wait ooh la laaa she’s pretty” and she had 0 interest in him. so like the ONLY way they could pair them together was to get her injured and have him care for her . And she falls in love with him out of nowhere. No. Being cared for does not mean you’ll fall in love with your caretaker. She’s so ace coded to me and my friend. Until SUDDENLY. Am I crazy

Ok so like yeah the forced heterosexual love interest moment. I did not want to see their FOUR (4) hybrid babies at the end. I’m losing my mind. also did Jim become a cop? I swear to fucking god LOL

The movie was SO good that disney didn’t know how to wrap it up without ruining it ❤️ WHICH IS VERY INTERESTING I think they had to compensate for all the risks they took with a safe and weird ending where the police like him now and the police are ok guys. Disney approved

This section is mostly abt Mine being a lonely little weirdo (characterised mostly by the smiths unsurprisingly) and because this era lacks a lot of actual content my notes are less specific between songs

There are actually so many male manipulator songs that fit too perfectly with Mine in this part of his life that I couldn't resist like I'm sorry but creep by radiohead is LITERALLY about him i don't make the rules

Okay but I do find 'Heaven Knowns Im Miserable Now' so funny in this context because I'm sure Mine was forcing himself into the yakuza expecting it to be so much easier to have close connections with these other men compared to his previous 9-5, only to find its almost exactly like his 9-5 just with more crime

'Salvatore' and 'Therefore I Am' are specifically the songs I attach to his bateman-esque grindset and his bubbling hatred for most of the people he works with dsfgf

FEELINGS TM (Romantic Homicide - How to Dissapear)

THIS SECTION I FEEL GREATLY ABOUT

These songs to me are all about how Mine copes with Daigo's hospitalisation and when he wakes up. His whole internal battle surrounding his premature grief and his loss of connection with Daigo because could no longer see him as a truly living thing anymore

'Change' specifically hits when you think about it in this context. Because it's not so much about any real change in Daigo himself it's all about Mine's mental image of him now (because let's be real, Mine was way more in love with the idealised version he had of Daigo more than anything tangible about him)

IFHY is a little more of any iffy choice but I think it still convey's a lot about how conflicted Mine likely felt as well as just continuing his Yandere behaviour just in a much more sinister flavour

Okay but here's where my favourite song of the entire list is

admittedly it's completely self indulgent and ties into the mine-lives theory. But just the guilt and shame Mine felt when he see's that Daigo was indeed alive and that he was going to have to explain the past few weeks to him

the thing abt suzaku and lelouch that really called to me was that they are two sides of the same coin. theyre both altruistic to a fault (different but the same), they love far too deeply (not talking abt this in a ship way either. both lelouch and suzaku do things out of love for others that is...questionable at best), they don't really understand the situation as a whole, and they don't really face major consequences to the end. lelouch is cruel, selfish, manipulative. suzaku is uncritical, righteously full of self loathing, half-hearted. theyre both major fucking hypocrites. they hate each other for the same reason they work so well together. (they love each other for those same reasons, too.) they're kind and optimistic to a fault. they're children playing war.

easily my favorite scene in all of code geass is one of the final scenes during the damocles battle, when the core argument between what lelouch stood for and what suzaku stood for is contended between the entire cast of characters, jumping from statement to statement, viewpoint from viewpoint. not only do suzaku and lelouch have their own quips but the other characters are what really make it for me because those are all people who are just as alive and have just as many feelings as they do--but at the end of the day none of that matters to them, such symbolized by the finale and zero requiem. their world was always so small, suzaku, lelouch, and nunnally. the final punishment was to destroy that in such a way that it could never be restored, that nothing could ever be the same. it's a much crueler punishment for suzaku, but i think lelouch knows suzaku well enough to know that suzaku would not be able to truly live (if you can even call it that, haha) without being molded into being something he is not (he was regarded as a knight and hero when all he saw himself as was a murdered.) but in the same breath, lelouch knowing that, accepting that part of suzaku, it being his final parting gift, his form of an eternity together... its powerful!

its kind of funny because code geass has its moments where the writing is so very much Not Good but then it also has these amazingly complex interwoven moments sprinkled in. personally, i actually grew up always asking myself whether its better to change the system without any casualty whatsoever vs dismantling it no matter the price, so i see myself in the both of them, though i agree with lelouch far more. truthfully, i didnt even like suzaku until after he detonates the fleija in r2 and he tells schneizel that as long as he makes him knight of one, he will slay the emperor. it took him a while, but he finally showed his own truth, understanding his fate as a weapon above all else.

its an anime with characters that are more complex than they look, parallels that run deeper than i believe many give credit for (dont get me started on shirley), and the truth of war, though maybe a bit sanitized. that being said, code geass would be Nothing without suzaku and lelouch at its helm, the true driving forces of the narrative and even the world of code geass itself.

those two are truly one of a kind.

some ramblings about a storyline and a character that oftentimes get brushed off and sillified if i may speak that way (although the show is a comedy and i am most definitely about to go on a wild tangent) :

i keep going back to buttons’ storyline and motivations this season, how he yearned to be at sea once more but stayed on the ground with his mates and how much of himself he was willing to betray and sacrifice just to stay faithful to his crew, even though it meant sticking to the shore.

i keep thinking about the inherent doom of longing to truly belong to the sea, and the unfathomable grief that comes with being stuck back on earth after one has vowed to enter seamanship. a similar commitment is required from nuns and priests and newlyweds : buttons has a god he adores, buttons has a spouse he reveres. the show is at its core a story about lovers, and buttons, in all his weirdness and inaptitude, is very much a lover, to the same extent as lucius, pete, ed, izzy or stede. he is faithful, forgiving, uplifting, to a bird, to a captain, to a ship.

when she comes to him with all the reverence owed to a sea witch, auntie sees buttons for who he is and doesn’t dismiss the grief he struggles so hard to express, the way the crew dismissed him for being to loud, too off-putting. he is back at sea, and yet he still misses it like one would miss a forsaken part of oneself. she comes to him at a time where his feeling of loss must be immense and washing over him, and she gives him everything he could ever wish for : a path to transfiguration.

every pirate, every sailer has once realised they’ll only join the sea for good through death and so many shanties celebrate the simple glory of being known as the one that got lost at sea for this very reason. thanks to auntie, buttons gets to join the sea through a new form of life, and in that way willingly sacrifices another part of himself, this time for his lover : « to love the sea as she must be loved, requires change ». his transfiguration parallels how much lucius has to process before he can be able to commit to pete, how much ed has to repay before he can achieve self love and be worthy of the crew’s love and forgiveness.

there isn’t more glory to a pirate’s love for the sea than to a cultivator’s love for their land, it is as absurd as it is gut wrenching. it is the impossible, mystical union of man and element, the foolish desire to be swallowed once again by the very thing that spat you out. it’s a love as messy as the human relationships portrayed in the show.

Never before i was interested in such a trope, even though its the most popular trope in the toko fandom. Maybe partially because i see Zuko and Toph relationship as absolutely possible in canon (post canon I mean). With their real canon personalities and stories, nothing should be adjusted or rethought to make these possible relationship exist and work. Meanwhile arranged marriage is always an AU trope. But recently I've been thinking over it more and I believe that it would be so interesting to explore their dymanic in AU where they met and needed to marry being very young and where their marriage was planned by self-serving and greedy adults from the beginning. By adults who didn't care for those children's life and well-being. and see how these kids, traumatised to cruelty and indifference of adults, slovely find a support in each other and grow fond of ach other and, in the end, find that joy of mutual love that they were stripped of for the most of their lives. They are only for each other and they are the whole world for each other.

When I think of it I always remember the movie "Lady Jane" with Helena Bonham Carter in a main role. Astonishing movie and everyone should watch it. There main characters has the very dynamic that would be between Toph and zuko in the arranged wedding AU. Lonely kids bound together be abuse and selfishness of adults, finding help and support in each other. Jake and Gilford was just pawns in their cruel parents game and perished because of it. I really hope that in such an AU Toph and Zuko's life would be different.

While I was writng it I though of one more interesting parallel that Toph and Zuko shares. Unlike Aang, Katara and Sokka who had some sort of connection to their peers during growing up and learned how to communicate and be friends Toph and Zuko were deprived of such an experience. They were alone among the adults who didn't care much for their wellbeing. Azula had same friends, but we see no kids around zuko. Seems like Ozai purposfully isolated him as a form of abuse and control. Toph was hidden by her parents from the world and people even didn't know that Naifongs have a daughter. This experience of isolation and lonely childhood defines their personalities. Aang, Sokka and Katara are first friendly peers they ever had and the only accepting family.

Never Have I Ever Finale Thoughts

I sped through the final seasons of Never Have I Ever and, generally, I liked it. Similar to Ted Lasso, I didn't find the storylines as engaging or the stakes as high as previous seasons. However, I appreciated the portrayal of character growth and healthier decisions. It was great to see Devi be in a place to trust her therapist and herself and try to do the work to let go of her anger and be more thoughtful about her relationships with her friends, family, and romantic partners. The show was still at its best when it tackled Devi's relationship with her mother. (I cried.) I loved seeing her grow into a person who would try, in her own teenage way, to look after her mother's feelings and needs.

I do feel like there is a teen show problem with college application and acceptance storylines. Applying to college is the biggest, most stressful, awful thing that takes up a great deal of senior and junior year. It can't be ignored. But man do those plots just drag for anyone who has already been through it. Time and distance really clarify that getting into an ivy league school really has so little bearing on a person's success or happiness. If anything storylines hung up on prestigious brand name universities reproduces classist ideologies. I can feel myself getting ready to rant about academia, so I'll edit this down to say, I found the Princeton stuff boring. I have literally lived through the best friend gets your dream school storyline, and it wasn't that big of a deal then or now. The most honest part of that plot was Devi seeing her upperclassman idol burn out in the transition to college.

Like Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, I don't think who Devi picked to date is the most important part of her journey. The love triangle pretty much resolved itself after season 3. The show never played coy with who Devi really wanted to date. Devi and Ben have a fun dynamic, but I foresee more tumultuous times ahead as the two of them continue to work on their emotional intelligence. I think by the end of series four, Devi does have a pretty strong sense of self. She's more comfortable with her desires (sexually, platonically, academically) and isn't trying to change herself into someone else. Ben, on the other hand, continues to have a lot of growing to do. I wish we had spent more time in the final season on Ben's friendships with other people. I think that is the relationship Ben craves and I hope that in college he really is able to have that and doesn't spend every weekend away from Columbia visiting his girlfriend. Paxton also continues to figure out what he wants. I appreciate how his journey was about learning to accept failure and learning to motivate himself to try again. I hope he does become a teacher and a coach. In ten years time, I hope he has a weekly trivia team made up of other teachers, all nerds, who kill at the local bar.

I've been shockingly (for me) ambivalent about who Devi dated at the end of the series. I love to ship! I love to pick sides. But I do find the idea of an "end game" ship when the characters in question have never had to file their own taxes a little ridiculous. (Unless you are Pacey and Joey) With that said, I think the couple I'd be most interested to explore years in the future would be Devi and Paxton. Devi and Ben are on parallel journeys, they aren't that far out of each others orbits. They will always make sense. But bringing Devi and Paxton back to a place where they could consider each other as romantic partners would take way more work and set up. And I for one would love to read that.

BUT reinsuba is popular. i am here to spread my ultimate beloved reinhard ship agenda - REINHARD AND JULIUS. i made like a Long text post on them a while back but okay im INSANE over their dynamic fr. theres so much potential there. their dynamic is so complicated, and theres like such an Unevenness to their relationship from the get go because reinhard and julius dont even have the same STORY in line when it comes to how they even met each other?? like reinhard thinks he met julius when he (reinhard) was 14 and they were just knights in training.

JULIUS HOWEVER remembers that he was ten when he learned of reinhard (who was eight at the time) and reinhard singlehandedly crushed julius's knighthood dreams because julius will NEVER measure up to reinhard's level. and you can see it in the way he talks about reinhard when reinhard isnt there - especially in his conversations with subaru about reinhard in arc 5 and 6. theres a fondness there, because julius really does care about reinhard, but theres So Much distance. reinhard has always been above julius - in power levels, but also you get the sense that they are just Not Close. theyre friends, but theyre not Super Intimate, though it feels like julius kind of Aches to be at least a little closer, u know? bc julius doesnt feel like theyre equals. but it feels like to reinhard, hes just kinda head empty and he Already thinks he and julius are equals - reinhard might even be a little jealous about julius and joshuas relationship because reinhard is oblivious and doesnt know ANY of the details. reinhard just sees julius and joshua and goes oh theyre good brothers <3 its good they have each other.

AND its like.... reinhard x julius would be like that kind of childhood friend that you end up pining for, but for Multiple Reasons (bc reinjuli are both extremely Repressed with their own Traumas, julius doesnt feel like he'll ever be equal to reinhard perhaps, reinhard having such a loose sense of self probably. bc hes been taught to only think of himself through what he can do for other people) it never works out. neither party confesses to the other. neither of them get any closer than Just surface level friends that just pine from a distance. and this is further destroyed by the fact that 1. the fact that reinhard considers subaru a best friend when they REALLY have not talked that much and then 2. subaru being closer with julius while subarus friendship with reinhard isnt so intimate and then 3. subaru and julius, after julius's name gets erased, thinks that reinhard, AKA the sword saint, would be the person with the greatest chance of remembering julius, right?

and then reinhard doesnt remember julius at all. it just. URHG. there is so much tragedy to reinhard and julius's relationship. and i really do think that its possible reinhard, just as julius has, may have felt a tiny bit of jealousy towards julius - on the surface, it looks like julius has/had it all. a younger brother that seemingly adores him, and previously, julius had his two parents before they died, and julius had his uncle. julius is able to be a knight with a little less of the restraints and expectations that reinhard has. julius is able to be Normal but still be a knight...

oh and also. previously mentioned reinhard x emilia (foils bc. family drama given the sirius=fortuna theory and petelgeuse... being doormats... dehumanization, except emilia is in the shadow of satella and therefore Hated by many while reinhard is the Hero and thats all he'll ever be... struggling with doing things on their own in the sense that they Are used to doing what theyre told or expected to do a lot bc of others speaking over them? etc). reinhard/emilia/subaru is great too. yes. good stuff. they can fit so much foils and trauma and power dynamics between all three of them.

A BROTP I have with said character: reinhard and felt ALL the way... which i know other people have mentioned pfft but its true. theyre great. i will mention reinhard and felix also though!!!! aaa i just think reinhard and felix and julius forming a little trio is cute tho they do love each other <33 and reinhard is. such a doormat. like he folds like a paper towel :((( bc of Psychological Trauma. and bc hes a poor little meow meow. MEANWHILE felix is definitely more honest and absolutely will call out on any bullshit. reinhard is softer and more strained while felix Is Not. i like the balance they have. and i DO like to think felix seethes at least a little bit inside seeing wilhelm everyday. no way felix isnt at least a tiny bit defensive, given wilhelms prior treatment of reinhard and also wilhelm fighting AGAINST DEMIHUMANS IN THE DEMIHUMAN WAR.....

A NOTP I have with said character: PLEASE not reinhard x felt. PLEASE. she is like fifteen and he is like twenty T^TTT pls. they are SIBLINGS. she is his new little sister!!!

A random headcanon: ive done a few doodles of this before but - reinhard mustve been a little unhinged as a kid. i mean in the sense that Before Shit Hit The Fan, reinhard was just your average little kid, not traumatized Yet, right? raising a Normal kid that doesnt have superpowers is tough. AND THEN YOU HAVE REINHARD. mr. "i can get any divine protection ever the moment i specifically need it". im talking like - wild shit mustve happened. and it DID, because *insert the entire once upon a time in lugunica side story here*. but i also mean weird things like little baby reinhard mysteriously ending up on the mansion rooftop. reinhard tugging on his dads cloak and going "papa pls look at what i drew :D" - which is normal little kid stuff until he shows his paper and WOAH WHAT THE FUCK A HYPERREALISTIC DRAWING IN CRAYON?? YOURE LIKE THREE YEARS OLD??? or reinhard just climbing onto chandeliers hanging from a very high ceiling. or reinhard trying to play tag and then u fucking blink once and suddenly hes run like an entire mile away with no issue. you gift him a stuffed animal and he accidentally hugs it too hard and cotton explodes everywhere. that sort of thing. giving a child superpowers is a recipe for disaster and theyre all lucky reinhard was a very timid and sweet kid.

General Opinion over said character:

he is the poorest little meow meow. he is so kind and sweet despite his whole upbringing and the fact that people keep trying to make him into a tool to use. his monster complex makes me sad :((( he deserves the world and the world loves him but he is So So Alone because of the world's love. he needs a hug :((( i hope he gets ALL the development... ALL the happiness eventually.... and ALSO i am hyped for when we finally get reinhards POV in the story!!! you ALWAYS get the sense that hes untouchable while simultaneously being Human and im so sad about all the dehumanization hes faced and it is just so sad about how so many of the things he says is like a cry for help. and there Is No Helping Him Atm bc the kingdom has him in a vice grip. and hes still so loyal to his family, who absolutely hate him. and hes expected to have kids - hes the same age as his fucking frozen in time mom now - to pass on the sword saint dp but like he must be afraid of fucking up his kids too :(( of having to pass down that power and put the same pressure he faced On His Kids Now :((((((( i just wish him the best!!! but let me just *squeezes him like a chew toy first*

Sea Fairy Cookie and Depression

Something I’ve wanted to talk about for a while is Sea Fairy and the reading of her as someone with Depression-- as a lesbian who myself has had Depression for most of my life and has been diagnosed for 10 years. Namely, how her story reads as such, the way it is handled well surprisingly, and things that are often missed about her and people like I’s experiences.

When I say Depression, I hope this is obvious but I will specify for the sake of being on the same page. I don’t mean the spells of feeling depressed most everyone goes through. I mean both Depression as a diagnosable condition and a common symptom that goes alongside other mental health diagnosis's.

Sea Fairy’s reading as someone with Depression goes beyond the fact she’s a rather somber and sad feeling character... though that is definitely part of it. It is in how much she gives up for the sake of others without taking care of herself. Often, people with Depression in my experience are a bit of bleeding hearts. They don’t care about themselves, so they put all their energy in helping others without regards for their own needs. Failing to take care of themselves to the point they grow tired, weary... and a risk to themselves and others. 

This can be seen in the story of Sugarteara-- a city built around and that used a piece of her heart. It ended up being unsustainable-- it couldn’t remain separate from her for her own sake and that of the sea and its creatures. She didn’t make Sugarteara a flawed civilization, it was flawed from its very inception as it was not something for them to take or something she should have given up.

For me, this is so nice because I appreciate something that addresses this self sacrificial side of depression. And most namely discusses it as a flaw. Its /not/ a good thing for her to be doing. And she is in fact happier with herself and life when she gives up the responsibility of the city and her role of guardian in CRK. Putting herself first is an act of empowerment, not a flaw. And I find that arc beautiful. Its also why I took issue with people considering her selfish for not being a guardian... as I think thats for the best for someone like her.

Dread Trident only takes this metaphor further-- making her cold and having given up on others, love, and herself. Often, people make her a bit overly mopey and just... sad. Ready to be taken and her heart to be claimed by another after she gave up on Moonlight. But I think this diminishes the more interesting angle of how people, when so deep in their own Depression, will often push others away from themselves. They isolate, despite the fact no one can go at it alone nor give up entirely on love. Even if they want to. But to keep up this facade, they become cold... rude... tyrannical.

This is also why I take issue with a trend I’ve noticed of people seemingly taking Dread as a way to not ship her with Moonlight-- she can try and throw them away all she wants, but the idea she ever fully gives up her feelings for Moonlight misunderstands the facade people like Dread put up. I also just... don’t think Moonlight would ever give up on her. Especially with what CRK added to their relationship. And the idea of someone giving up on their partner while they’re at their lowest just... bothers me, personally. 

I remember first getting into CR-- my sister (who is familiar with my depression) heard me discuss Sea Fairy. And after showing her the descriptions, she looked me straight in the eye and was just like ‘oh so she’s just a depressed lesbian like you’. This hit me to my core-- I liked Sea Fairy before this, but someone noticing parallels I hadn’t even fully caught onto... it hit me. And ever since this has been a very personal story for me. And I hope sharing this put into perspective for others.

idk man like. i just hate how it feels like enjoying any dynamic of poly-pirates outside of fnc is wrong-- bc at that point, what is the point?

*i personally tend to see the two as very close, but the specifics of whether that closeness is platonic/familial or romantic depends on interpretation (whether of the individual, author, etc). they're two people who've found connection and safety in each other and also enjoy ribbing the other for jokes- what specific type of connection that is can vary for me, yknow? the type isnt the Core of their dynamic to me

Oh yeah, I'm 1000% with you on this. I mentioned navyseal cause that's my personal guilty pleasure that I am highkey obsessed with but had to keep it on the downlow after twitter decided it was just as bad as inc*st apparently (as someone who is very very deeply uncomfortable and revolted by that type of stuff in genuine, that shit pissed me off!!!), but this absolutely applies to Chip and Jay and polypirates as a whole. Hell, when I first started the show and didn't really have much fandom influence in my first 30 something episodes I was actually way more of a poly enjoyer

Anyways, as a whole I do sincerely think Chip and Jay work better as a platonic bond, I like this interpretation of their relationship better than romantic, but that doesn't necessarily make the ship bad or wrong you know? Literally ditto to everything you said in your asterisk I couldn't word it better myself.

Like bruh it really felt like these characters are stuck being bitchless fr LOL that whole twitter debacle made it feel like the only CORRECT ships were fnc and pistolwhip (as if fnc doesn't Also have some of the same dynamics listed in navyseal and chip/jay!! (although im certainly keeping my mouth shut further on that since people have started gunning to convince people fnc is a Bad Boring Ship, Actually, and it's better platonic (unrelated to the wlw vs mlm take that just happened there, big disclaimer (I spend too much time on twitter can u tell... there's so many shipwars there for no reason...))) anyways yeah there was just too many people trying to police these ships and instead of just being NORMAL and saying "oh X isn't my cup of tea I enjoy a familial/platonic bond between them instead" they start bending over backwards to prove that ACTUALLY it's PROBLEMATIC, SEE? And sourcing the boys' opinions on it doesn't Wholly matter to ships (unless it's in regards to boundaries, in which it Absolutely Matters) cause Bizly regularly dunks on fnc and that hasn't changed anything

It is simply fandom culture to ship, and while I love fnc to absolute death as my main ship here, it's nice to explore some variety yk? navyseal has CRAZY potential cause of their parallels and their journey of self discovery and how much they deeply care for each other, polypirates is just a lot of fun altogether cause of all their personalities and that shared strong bond, then you have swordfish, fish² and chips, caspian/chip, marshall john/gillion, like, multishipping is FUN dude. Unless it's GENUINELY problematic or Actual Proshipping like twitter Claimed, I don't see the big idea. There is such thing as "Don't like, don't read". There is such thing as muting/blocking words and curating your own experience. You don't have to put down others because their enjoyment of something clashes with your personal interpretation of it. actually im not super into shipping i think? i definitely value being able to imagine a dynamic for even the nichest pairings and have a lot of fun stretching or emphasizing certain parts of each characters' personalities to get them to work the best while opening up the potential for some development on each characters' side (thats exactly why im doing the ship bingo! its a ton of fun!), but theres very few things i actually like. Ship beyond surface level thoughts tbh. and recently the things i actually do ship have gotten increasingly niche. so enjoy this ramble that mostly pertains to specifically me and only me LMAO /lh

people might be able to tell ive been getting very into dametaberge. oh my god im so insane. no one look at me. dmk+jambacult found family Real. i have like three comics in my drafts for them. its mostly dametaberge thoughts rn but i like to think susie joins them later to make a poly ship. dmk and susie are a little tense at first but susie is, "like so over her knight phase," as she says, which dmk is extremely conflicted about whether to be offended or relieved at. and then they learn how to relax around each other and are always the two in the relationship to have awful destructive ideas, which flamberge vetos or approves of on a case by case basis. they get very happy and excited when flamberge approves of their awful plans

and of course my beloved gsa ships.............. theres falsgato which i am incredibly insane about thanks to my friend dragging me into it and now its a thing in my animeverse. enemies to friends to lovers I KEEP SAYING IM SO WEAK FOR THAT. dragato was a huge asshole to falspar for Various reasons regarding the nature of the gsa and perhaps dragatos own personal insecurity, but once they lost the war they got to bond since dragato like, realized how little the shit he antagonized falspar for actually mattered in the first place. and falspars a guy who really sees the best in people and ahahahghdjk its a whole thing its a whole thing i wont go into it rn LOL

theres also metarthur which is my very very beloved longtime rarepair. which i um. uh. ahahahah............. i get very slightly nervous talking about on main because a lot of people hc arthur as meta knights dad or parental figure but i shouldnt be nervous about hc differences really....... anyways theyre supposed to be like parallels of each other. people who are opposites thematically (arthur being leader of the gsa; mk being a former deeply infamous demon beast) who find themselves in similar positions in that they both kinda struggle with their sense of purpose vs their sense of self. meta knight sees his past struggles in arthur and so he finds himself drawn to him. he cant really Solve his situation, but (during their war-time relationship specifically) he hopes to offer some solace to him which functions as a form of catharsis to mk himself too. the two get to connect and understand each other in a unique way. i wont get too into this one right now either lol since the dynamic changes a lot depending on if its their during-war relationship or post-war relationship but theres the basics. i have a comic expanding on their general relationship in my drafts too but its at the bottom of my to-do list tbh. maybe someday though

im only into this one casually nowadays but morphogala... you really cant go wrong with "knight of death saves the greatest warrior in the galaxy from their torturous fate". something something the themes of wishing for the release of death being subverted into yes, death itself releasing you but in a way that actually Saves and rescues you instead. the hope and love in spite of all of the hopelessness AHHHHGH the themes of this one make me so weak. theres so much potential...... i really love this one on an aesthetic level too

ships that make my thumbs up list in that i like them in concept but dont ship myself would be: marxolor; any of wave 3 x each other tbh. i have them as just besties in my hcs but paired up in any way is very fun; i kinda like shadow metadede but im really particular about the dynamic of that one; fransoos gets a very big thumbs up from me for themes and concept+enemies/rivals to lovers; metagala is. i dont super get it myself but the aesthetics alone are absolutely on-point enough to put this one in the thumbs up category. yayyyyyyy. im sure theres more that im missing but i think that covers any that arent too niche

Honestly I’m a little heartbroken the more I find out about this show. I,too, thought the duffers were absolute geniuses! And I also was excited because I rarely see comphet portrayed in media and the subtext led me to believe that that’s where they were going with Mike. I was excited about a lot of things. But now I’m realizing how much of it was a lie. I feel lied to, and I feel humiliated seeing others laugh at us. I’m queer; I naturally pick up on queer subtext. There was enough of it to be able to provide legitimate evidence for the ship, and they even exploited that during pride month. I’m just confused and hurt by how they handled wills sexuality. Forget Mike, I would’ve accepted one sided Byler but using a queer character as a plot device for a het relationship is what truly broke me. I thought this show was different, I thought it was genius how they subverted expectations, but it was all a lie. And I can’t even grieve about it without being laughed at by people saying “I told you so”.

I know that feeling well sadly :( It is so disheartening to experience this as a queer person. I feel mocked. And as queer people we recognize queer subtext easily, so naturally, we're going to pick up on it!! It's not just that we picked up on vibes, we saw the parallels they explicitly chose to use for Mike & Will, like eyewitness & ghostbusters, which is on THEM. We picked up on it, and if they simply used those parallels with no intention of byler ever even being a thing, that's horrible of them. You're totally right about them exploiting it during pride month on social media, and to have them release it right before and after pride month too just feels so icky. And I completely agree, using Will's deeply emotion and heart-wrenching confession about how he feels like he is mistake for being gay to further A STRAIGHT RELATIONSHIP. I'm disgusted. And I was okay with them writing Will as totally self-less and willing to help Mike with his relationship with El all season, when I thought for sure byler was going to be requited. But after seeing vol. 2 and the doubt it gave me, makes writing Will like that feel awful. They've turned him into the miserable queer man who exists to pine over the straight friend and only help him, while he remains 'loveless'. I hate it. Here's hoping season 5 goes better. And it really is the cherry on top that not only does it feel like queer people mocked by the show, we're being mocked by its homophobic fans as well. Lovely.

seiga was just done over here but she's about to come up soon :P ! so that toyosatomimi...

General opinion/How much I care about them: i love miko... 🎧 i mentioned before about coming to love the td crew as a whole over a long time of reading doujins featuring them and Miko is obviously a big part of that too. she and her crew are such a fun addition to gensokyo's worldbuilding and Miko herself is amazing. zun's historical rpf version of prince shotoku who became a hot girl wizard and wants to take over the world and is super charismatic about it? that's unmatched.

...that said, kind of a tangent here, her premise and deliberately kinda nationalistic motifs are only fun in touhou because she's contrasted with a bunch of similarly ambitious reglious leaders and their own groups, and that you know none of them would ever actually ever 'succeed'. They'll probably always be competition and waning in powers, but that consistent conflict is sort of its own kind of peace since gensokyo can always accomodate them.

A ship I love: hey guess what im not done talking about seiga because its seimiko time. just like seiyoshi i also have a really specific headcanon backstory in mind for them which i cant really get into all of it right now, but to try and sum up: Even if Miko knew Seiga's desires were only self-serving, she admired/respected/idolised/loved Seiga who appeared before her to answer all of Miko's greatest desires, and at some point decide it wasnt enough to just learn how to not die from her, but to also become a beautiful hermit who challenges the fate the world bestows them.

And it mustve been unexpected for Seiga to meet someone who managed to see her for everything she is (which includes defiling corpses and generally making an enemy of heaven every day), and not only not really care but also Gets Her.

thaaaaat all being said, in present day Miko knows Seiga has a Reputation and gets up to Antics that doesn't exactly paint hermits in the greatest light, so she's like always bouncing between two ends of a meter where she's begging her dear teacher to reign things in, or she's trying to explain to others why digging up corpses is actually not as bad as it looks 😰🥰

A non-romantic relationship that I love: it doesnt come up in my head often but her shared parenting of Kokoro along with Byakuren and Mamizou is both sweet and extremely funny. Miko taking it upon herself as a matter of pride to guide the menreiki thanks to her role in their creation is really good, and its also really funny that despite that connection she still basically has to compete with others over her, and she probably loses to the tanuki more often than not??

also does 'ex-romantic' count because i absolutely adhere to belief that in her and okina's former lives, they absolutely were a thing, bonded over a shared love of art and beauty, created a whole bunch of noh masks together... But then Miko started caring about all that a whole lot less when a certain hermit hailing from China entered the picture, and the rest was history 😌

The NOTP: call me miss no fun but it might be miko/byakuren. i do actually really love the rivalry between miko and byakuren, the back and forths, the varying hypocrisy, the thematic parallels, and the ways they do manage to work together for a common cause! I just. have yet to see a way to turn it romantic that works for me.

also on that note if you're gonna do miko/saki (which will always just be for jokes to me and never anything i sincerely consider), saki has to be the one putting a saddle on miko 🤠

My biggest headcanon about them: everything above was kinda it 😆 maybe more will come to my mind in the future...

An idea for a fanfiction I would like to write/read about them: she'd be in the seiga backstory fic too since their first meeting is kinda vital to both characters. but as for another idea... Adventure Game type story where to earn points with the people, she susses out some random people's desires and goes to find the most quick and expedient way to fulfill them n_n

Something that makes me think of them: one time in pokemon xy i thought of naming an espurr after her because i knew meowstic kinda reminded me of her 🐱
