ougghhh everyone’s talking so fondly about lionpaw and his new friendships made by the ripwater event but all i can think about is his mention of ashfur’s comment. and how lion probably thinks it’s just a little joke but ash might actually mean it :(

There's this little pearl of a theme hidden in the Ripwater Episode, if you look carefully; abuse acts on people in insidious but subtle ways.

It's Mistystar who's defensive of asking for help or admitting a problem, thinking of what she did to Leopardstar and also repeating cultural sentiment that once victimized her herself.

It's Squirrelflight shouting at her daughter for acting like she used to, because she's spent some years being yelled at in a similar way

It's Hollypaw who isn't allowed to enjoy her achievement of saving Otterpaw's life or lean into how much she has in common with Lakepaw, because she's ashamed of how she did something "wrong" by snooping

And lastly, it's Lionpaw, who's starting to believe the vicious comments that Ashfur says about him. I referenced Willowpelt partially for the sweet little irony of him teaching her recipe to her unknown grandson, Ripplepaw, but ALSO because Ashfur is starting to isolate him.

Willowpelt is the Head of Hunting, currently, a position that Lionblaze is going to succeed her in. I don't think Ashfur is playing 4D chess quite yet, but there's a couple of little motivations knocking around in Ashfur's heart for why he's nasty whenever Lionpaw interacts with her;

Ashfur hates Willowpelt, because of the events from Ferncloud's Parting. He isn't aggressive to her directly, but he does spread rumors and slander whenever possible, happy to remind others of her exile.

Lionpaw getting close to Willowpelt will annoy him. Ashfur both hates and resents his apprentice, but also feels POSSESSIVE of him. He feels like Willowpelt will "steal" what's his.

A simple but hard truth; Ashfur wants Lionpaw to hurt. Maybe Ashfur sees it in his head like "telling the hard truth" or "toughening his apprentice up," but when he makes those malicious little comments, makes him recoil with hurt, it feels righteous.

Maybe in the next draft, it should actually be Ashfur, not Blackclaw, who comes to growl at Lionpaw for bonding with Lakepaw over the spears. Maybe have Willowpelt come in to show them how to properly use one and that's actually what set Ash off. Like he just used xenophobia because it was convenient in that moment.

#Also I have been waffling on where BB!Willowpelt dies #But I've realized I need her around for a good part of Po3 #She has a really juicy history now and the dynamics are playing out too well to just pass over. She's too useful to be fodder. #And since I want her around for early Po3 it makes the most sense for her to hang on just long enough to eventually be succeeded by Lion #And if she dies sometime in BB!OotS it's REALLY convenient to fill the 6-month timeskip between Cruel Season and The Beaver Mission with it #Like Lion and Jay threw themselves into work to stay busy while mourning their sister #Plus she can purr and say she's excited that Lion is her grandson-in-law now when he gets with Cinder #See what I mean? wait im unbelievably excited to see more of alex and yassen's interactions in alex rider season 3. yassen literally killed someone to protect alex.

we know from the books alex learned to appreciate yassen in some way because he died to save him, but this time around yassen lived but killed someone to save him. book!alex still thinks about yassen long after his death and chooses to keep the fact that yassen died for him to himself. he didn't even seem to hold a grudge that yassen's dying words to him ended up getting alex shot later on (possibly because he appreciated that yassen led him to the truth about his father, and he got to learn more about both of them).

different scenarios but they both led to alex succeeding in stopping damian cray. im curious to know if yassen was still out of it this time around, and he didn't actually want alex to go to scorpia. [insert that anthony horowitz tweet/tumblr post here]. very excited to find out. and also scared!

The way dunmeshi explores character’s personalities through their interactions with others makes me MELT. Like her we have a full page or two dedicated to Marcille’s hair, but it’s not about her hair really, it’s more about how everyone in the party knows how she usually takes such good care of it. They’re so shocked she’s just letting it flop around and that she doesn’t care. It was such an important thing to her that Senshi comments on how good that desire must’ve tasted to the lion. I’m okay! I’m okay!

Characters baring a mouth full of sharp fangs as show of aggression is top tier but can we talk about how sinister a flash of smooth square omnivore teeth can be. The implications therein? The difference between facing a carnivore vs a member of the terrifyingly, aptly named 'opportunistic eaters'? The fear of being on one's menu, the knowledge that you are on the other's - no matter what you are. The inherent danger of a threat display where there are set rules to avoiding harm turning into a hunt on a dime.

Anyway, thinking about Nikodemus and how beautifully all of this translates into his supernatural setting...

Happy birthday to Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III and Takashi (Shiro) Shirogane. I realized while working on this that they actually have a lot in common: they both have insane adventures they just get thrown into, love flying, got marked with something that was meant to dehumanize them and ended up using it to help them start a rebellion (slavemark, Shiro's arm), they both end up LEADING rebellions, the creatures they fly with have been abused (Black Lion and the Windwalker), their enemies are a power-hungry evil dude and a WITCH (?!? like??? Haggar??? Alvin's mother??? just realized this one today and it's still blowing my mind a bit). They're extremely loyal, brave, kindhearted, love their friends and go up against impossible odds to save the world. Idk man, I think they'd be friends.

Bonus: Black Lion, Windwalker and Toothless hanging out in the background (Windwalker and Toothless not to scale because they'd barely be visible but Cressida often makes the dragons bigger so they're visible in the books so it's fine)

Hello! Thought I'd say THANK YOU for your laios-marcille posts and rts, they might be one of my favorite dynamics in the series (or in any series) *because* of the layers it has, there is so much going on and I love how it's shown. And I'm glad I found ppl who see it in a similar way. They mean the world to me and ch 96 makes my heart all warm bc they CARE so much! They all know each other so well. This whole party is a family!! And found family has complex dynamics, it's not clear cut and with easy labels. That goes for them too.

one thing that they did say was cool about library at mount char that i was prepared to be ambivalent on and then DID find outrageously cool is the whole 'steve, a human plumber who resembles nothing so much as a less high jesse pinkman, becomes best friends with an adolescent lion over the course of like, a day, and now they are roommates and he is learning the language of the cats so he can converse with her in her own manner, and he says hiiiii sweetie!!! when he sees her and she talks about him like apes talk about tarzan

The way that Stede treated Izzy during episode 3 were some of the ONLY times I could stand seeing Izzy on screen so far this season because it finally felt like someone who recognized him and was treating him rationally tbh

I adore this show and the people who worked on it, but ffs, it feels like they all enjoyed Con too much and the Izzy-Enjoyers Fanon of his character last season and jumped the gun on his redemption arc.

I'm going to go through and explain this more, but I just wanted to put that out there first while I lay out why Stede's expressions and reactions make so much more sense coming out of season 1's events.
