Regretfully Uncaring Chapter 31: New, Crescent, Quarter, Gibbous, Full

This chapter has one of my favourite scenes in the fic. It's an emotional one, at least for my writing it. I cried a lot lol.

"Do I still love him…" she trailed off, and her face finally broke. It shattered the mask of indifference with one of sorrow. She blinked and the tears finally rolled down her face. "I don't want to. I don't want to love him,"

Harry felt a lump form in his throat. "You don't have to," he said quietly. "You're your own person. He has no control over you. You need to tell yourself… decide for yourself… if you love him,"

Ginny sobbed and brought her hands to her face. "I hate it. I hate this. I hate myself, Harry,"

Harry nodded and, though quite dizzy, shuffled across the floor and sat next to her. He kept enough distance between them, so their shoulders didn't touch.

"Do you want to know what I think?" Harry asked, reaching forward and taking her empty bottle of wine away from her.

Ginny didn't respond, so he continued anyway.

"I think you're good," he said earnestly. She looked up into his eyes again. "I think that even after… even after everything you've been through. All the terrible decisions. All the times you emotionally destroyed yourself… the fact that you're still here. That you're still good. I'm amazed by it."

Charon

They said, if you wish to cross the river Styx, you have to pay Charon, the ferryman, a single coin. Severus never actually meet Charon but he meet other ferryman during his lifetime. Men who pushed him gently into the silent of eternal night.

The first ferryman was his father, a muggle who hated magic and himself. To cross over, Severus pay him with his childhood. He remembered the belt, the stings of cold winter, the hunger and the sound of rats running around the alley. But it wasn’t enough. The second ferryman was a beautiful boy with silver eyes. To cross over, Severus continue to pay him throughout his teenage years. He remembered the stings of hexes, the humiliation, and the wetness of his robes clinging to his body as he was drop into the lake. The ferryman then deliver him to the wolf. But it wasn’t enough.

The third ferryman was a man with red eyes and charming smiles. The ferryman told him, he understood his suffering, and gently, he marked him as his own. To cross over, Severus pay him the one thing he ever loved. He remembered the anguish, the regret, the stain on his arm, and the never ending crucio. But again, it wasn’t enough. The fourth and final ferryman was a man one step before d3ath itself. To cross over, Severus pay him with the only thing he had left, his soul. He remembered how the ferryman’s body falls, the way his last word was of him begging him to end it. With this final payment, the third ferryman approached him and in turn will deliver him to his final rest. However again, it seems it wasn’t enough. As the boy with silver eyes, took both of his hand, together they ran and the boy rowed them back into the opposite direction.

(I genuinely forgot what I was going for the first time I had the idea, so above is just the general idea of Severus and his connection with men who controlled his whole life, who he paid dearly for every stage of his life, and after, at the end, he was finally rewarded with death, except I don’t want his story to end like that, so Sirius here had the role to bring him back, you can view him here as a ghost or alive [where he didn’t fall into the veil], why him especially? I viewed these two as characters who lived through the same hell, the type that goes “you put me through this hell, so I’ll drag you down here too” but also “you and I went through the same hell, I managed to get out, so I’ll do anything to get you out with me”) [according to the extremely biased characterization in my head ahaha]

The age of these characters portrayal is set during the time Severus felt closer to death because of them. Tom riddle in his 50s when he killed lily, Tobias in his 30-40s when Severus still lived with him, Sirius in his fifth year when he sent Severus to werewolf!remus and dumbledore in his 150s when he asked Severus to end his life. Since this was also done from Sirius pov, Severus here is also portrayed in his fifth year except for the last panel where he is portrayed a moment before his supposed death at 38.

This was loosely inspired by the song ‘Achilles come down’ by gang of youths and this wonderful fic two sides by blue_inking and Zain

The fact that Hagrid keeps werewolf pups under his bed is so fucking hilarious like you mean to tell me he kidnapped a bunch of children and just... stuffed all of them under his bed. Without anyone in his dorm noticing. Or maybe they did, they were just too afraid to say anything about it

Guys I think we just found out the real reason he was expelled

To give slight credit:

A) Entirely possible the diary was lying to Harry when it said this had happened. A bit of a strange thing to lie about given the Acromantula thing had occurred/there was no need to make Hagrid look worse or guiltier but it is possible.

B) JKR probably hadn't figured out werewolves yet/what she wanted to do with them as Remus shows up book 3. As much as JKR claims to have thought of things 20 years in advance she has a bad habit of retconning/convincing us a thing that existed last book works totally different now. Could be werewolves were going to be more wolves and then... they... weren't...

But yes, canonically, Tom Riddle noticed and chewed him out for it, but he wasn't expelled until Myrtle died. Could be the other dorm mates were too terrified and... it's telling that no one questioned that it was Hagrid who killed this girl except for Albus Dumbledore. I imagine Hagrid got a lot of side-eyeing from kids who had known him in school when he became groundskeeper.

Double Standards: Malfoys vs Potters Edition

It's interesting how people view the Malfoy vs Potter men. The Malfoys are often considered shallow while the Potters are lauded for befriending the "downtrodden".

James Potter befriended Remus Lupin, a disadvantaged werewolf. He and his friends became animagi for Lupin. That's great and all...but then why was Remus so hesitant to go against the status quo and speak out against the marauders - to do his job as prefect?

And James treated Wormtail like trash too.

‘How thick are you, Wormtail?’ said James impatiently. ‘You run round with a werewolf once a month –’

Nice to say that out loud where anyone can hear, Jamie.

‘Put that away, will you,’ said Sirius finally, as James made a fine catch and Wormtail let out a cheer, ‘before Wormtail wets himself with excitement.’ Wormtail turned slightly pink, but James grinned.

“Lily and James only made you Secret Keeper because I suggested it,” Black hissed, so venomously that Pettigrew took a step backwards. “I thought it was the perfect plan… a bluff… Voldemort would be sure to come after me, would never dream they’d use a weak, talentless thing like you… it must have been the finest moment of your miserable life, telling Voldemort you could hand him the Potters.”

You really don't get the vibe that Sirius or James held little Petie in high regard, do you?

It can't be more obvious that Sirus and James were top dogs and Peter and Remus were just add-ons.

As for Harry, where to start with him? He shows little empathy for other people and has a nasty habit of describing people in dehumanizing ways (eg. Aberforth, Salazar Slytherin, Marcus etc). He has probably described Tom Riddle, the guy who murdered his parents, as attractive more times than his own girlfriend Ginny. He latched on to Ron because of his family and honestly, Hermione feels like a pity friend at times. Harry hardly likes being around her without Ron. Harry has another nasty habit of giving his best friends the silent treatment until they come crawling back to him, even when he is in the wrong too (re firebolt for Hermione and Ron believing Harry entered his name in the goblet of fire).

‘Hullo,’ said the boy, ‘Hogwarts too?’ ‘Yes,’ said Harry. ‘My father’s next door buying my books and mother’s up the street looking at wands,’ said the boy. He had a bored, drawling voice. ‘Then I’m going to drag them off to look at racing brooms. I don’t see why first-years can’t have their own. I think I’ll bully father into getting me one and I’ll smuggle it in somehow.’

Yet, no one seems to give Lucius and Draco any credit. These people are supposed to be snobby, pureblood supremacists. Yet, even though Harry was dressed in decrepit muggle clothes, Draco still engaged him in conversation. Draco had no idea who Harry was, had no clue he was famous at the time, and still made several efforts to talk with him and continue the conversation even when Harry was cold and aloof.

And Severus Snape moved off to the other side of the Hall, away from Lily, to where the Slytherins were cheering him, to where Lucius Malfoy, a prefect badge gleaming upon his chest, patted Snape on the back as he sat down beside him …

Lucius knows 'Snape' is not a pureblood name. He could see Snape's clothes were probably old hand-me-downs. He knows Snape is way below his class. Yet, he still welcomes Snape warmly to Slytherin. What reason would he have to fake pleasantries with a poor half-blood? I doubt Slughorn or the other bigoted purebloods would care if Lucius left his seat in disgust at Snape's presence. Even as adults, it is indicated in the narrative multiple times that Lucius holds Snape in high esteem. Draco held Snape in high esteem too despite being a halfblood.

The same Snape that James Potter tormented for no good reason - because Snape existed. Instead of targetting the purebloods like Avery and Mulciber, James and his delinquent loser gang went after Snape, the poor half-blood. Harry literally did nothing as Snape lay dying in the same shack that Lupin almost killed him in two decades prior.

Harry describes Pansy as being pug-faced...yet Draco still dated her. Even though Crabbe turned on him, Draco still grieved for him afterwards. Compared to Harry who only dates the prettiest girls and body shames other girls if they don't meet his standard and only cares about people who do things for him, like him and are loyal to him. It's only when the people he dislikes die for him that he changes his tune and suddenly they become great people.

How can people say the Potters are less shallow than the Malfoys??Draco and Lucius will always be high-class elitists who believe in sticking with their 'own kind' but give credit where credit is due.

My Writing Masterlist

Since I post on here far more consistently then on ao3 for reasons, I figured I would compile a list of my writing for those who don't like sifting through fandoms they could care less about to get to the good stuff. 

Separated by fandom, and somewhat by trope. 

Harry Potter:

Harry eats a God. 

Harry just can't seem to stay dead. TW: Suicide, character death, frequent character death, torture, murder, disjointed snippets, discontinued + Harry dissociates. Connected, same warnings may apply. 

First Encounters: Time loop, Voldemort-as-Quirrell visits the Dursleys and is less than pleased. 

First Encounters: The first time Harry meets Voldemort, the man he's been trained to kill all his life, he's nineteen, and Voldemort recognizes him. 

Prisoner Harry tells Voldemort about the Dursleys like it's a bedtime story. 

Except for the incident, Harry really doesn't tend to talk a lot when he has a concussion. Stream of thought narrative, character injury.

Literally just Empath!Harry spoilers. Harry, at his trial, allowing himself be petty to an extent. 

Harry gets drunk, pulled into Voldemort's mind, and decides he wants to share his good mood.

Harry never imagines the effect getting a boyfriend would have on Riddle. Jealous Tom. 

Harry messes with Diary!Tom

Harry and Voldemort have to complete a task based on the colour of the others' robes, for some reason?

Harry is kidnapped and wakes up in an incredibly comfortable bed. Voldemorts knows Harry is his horcrux.

Harry ruthlessly defends Hogwarts against encroaching Death Eaters. Sixth Year.

It's one paragraph guys.

Prompt-based: Tom possesses Harry when he's afraid. Hermione POV.

“Riddle!” You chase after Tom. “Riddle! Wait, please!”

Tom doesn’t slow as he strides angrily away.

“Riddle!” Your voice is filled with the strange desperation thrumming in your chest. You know it somehow, deep in your bones. This is your last chance for reconciliation.

“Tom!” You shout as loud as you can. “Please, I’m sorry!”

All the students in the hallway stop and look at you. Tom stops walking.

He turns around and advances on you. You panic. The anger in his gaze makes you cower. “I’m sorry—”

Tom grabs your arm and forcefully hauls you into the closest classroom. He slams the door shut, blocking you two from the prying eyes and ears of the other students.

You shrink back away from him. The classroom is empty, and you move towards one of the desks. Tom turns around before you can sit down. He crosses his arms, glaring at you.

You swallow thickly. Your voice comes out a bit weak. “I really am sorry.”

His expression doesn’t change.

You look down, trying to think of what to say. Of how to apologize.

“I’m sorry for missing our trip to Hogsmeade,” you say quietly.

There’s a long, tense silence.

“Why’d you miss it?” Tom’s voice is cold and clipped.

“I was sick. My roommate made me go to the Hospital Wing.” Your voice sours at the mention of your roommate.

Tom scoffs. “And you didn’t bother to tell me?”

“She was supposed to tell you.” You say. Even the memory makes your stomach twist from your roommate’s betrayal.

Tom falls silent. He studies you, gaze intense and dark. He’s not quite glaring anymore, but you can still smell his anger.

“And Diggory?” He asks.

You blink, a little confused. “He asked to study with me.”

Tom’s eyes narrow. “That’s it?”

You nod. “I thought…” You hesitate for a moment. “I thought you didn’t want to be my study partner anymore… so I said yes to him.”

“And the flirting?” His voice is icy.

You’re confused for a moment. Flirting? Then you think about it. You had been laughing and having a good time with Cedric. Maybe that’s what Tom meant.

“We were just talking. My roommate…” You stop. You don’t want to talk about her anymore. “Cedric was cheering me up. That’s all.”

Tom’s glare slowly softens. He looks away and uncrosses his arms. “You didn’t answer him. When he said we were over.”

You blink. You weren’t sure what he meant by over, but you didn’t want it to be true. “Are we?” You ask tentatively.

He exhales, looking back over at you. “Do you want to be?” There’s so much charge behind his gaze, so much emotion you can’t identify. You can smell his hope though.

“No.” You say it firmly; no hint of doubt. Whatever you have going on with him, you want it to continue.

A faint smile tugs at Tom’s lips. It makes your heart thrill.

After a moment, he speaks up again. “I don’t… I don’t mind if you study with Diggory. Just…” He looks conflicted.

“I won’t flirt with him,” you say softly. And you mean it. Cedric has been your crush for years, but looking at Tom right now…

He relaxes. Smiles. “Thank you.”

You let out a soft breath of relief. “So we’re good then?”

Tom chuckles lightly and nods. “Yes. We’re good.”

You smile back. Good. You’ve never been so happy to hear it.

The rest of your day goes smoothly until dinner. Your roommate sits with someone else, occasionally shooting you dirty looks as you eat. Eventually, you get too upset by it and you go sit with Hermione instead.

She looks surprised to see you, but her surprise turns to anger on your behalf once you explain.

“That bitch!” She hisses. Your jaw drops. “‘Mione!” You’ve never heard her swear before. You’re glad she’s taking your side though.

“What?” Hermione crosses her arms. “She probably orchestrated the whole ordeal. Fred and George sell their nasty prank sweets, you know. She could’ve slipped you some quite easily.”

You hesitate at this. Surely your roommate wouldn’t go that far…

But you had eaten some sweets the night before you’d gotten sick. And it had been your roommate who’d insisted you’d gone to the Hospital Wing.

Your stomach sinks. “You don’t think she would… right?”

Hermione looks grim. “I wouldn’t put anything past that conniving sneak. She’s been one of Riddle’s fangirls for a couple years now.”

You blink. “Tom has fangirls?”

She pauses to smirk at you. “Tom, huh?”

You blush and look away. “The fangirls, ‘Mione.”

Her expression turns serious again. “He’s had fangirls for years. How have you never noticed? They’ve hated you since you started studying with him.”

You think about that. You remember some fourth years last year giving you dirty looks in the hall… and some sixth years tripping you earlier this year…

You’d never really paid attention to them. After Umbridge, you’d just assumed they’d been after you for your lycanthropy.

“Oh. Huh.” You rest your chin on your palm. “I never really noticed them before.”

“Well,” Hermione pats your shoulder. “Regardless, your roommate’s one of them. Given how ridiculous they act around him, I wouldn’t put it past her to go to such lengths. You’re lucky she didn’t try to poison you or something.”

“I guess so…” You sigh and look down. “What am I going to do about her, ‘Mione?”

She gives you a reassuring smile. “Don’t worry about her. I’ll take care of it.”

You relax… until you remember that Hermione’s one of the most vindictive witches in the school. You give her an anxious look. “You won’t hurt her, right?”

Harry prided himself on having a strong sense of smell, probably an acquired skill from his dogfather, Sirius Black, and Remus Lupin, two of his dad’s closest friends. The dog animagus and werewolf had probably passed on their noses to Harry through osmosis, considering how much time they had spent around Harry. (A lot. The answer was a lot.) That strong sense of smell was picking up something that seemed a little out of place. The smell of ink, parchment and old leather surrounded him, and he could pick out rosemary and a tint of chocolate and strawberry from Hermione’s perfume. But under all those, there was a lingering scent of something darker than the witch’s light, bright spritz. Something muskier and bloodier, something that smelled a little forbidden, something that smelled a lot like... Tom Riddle.

hi! are there any headcanons for GC that you have that haven’t really made it into your chapters, but they’re kicking around in there when you’re writing?

Hey darling! I actually talked about this on The Interlude but yes, there are very many of these.

From small tiny things like the fact that Sirius likes to draw, but never shows his drawings to anyone, and that he plays the piano fantastically.

To the fact that Remus has a camera and loves taking pictures and that his handwriting isn’t that great unless he uses a charm to make it better. But that, if he is writing for you to copy his notes, he tries to make them extra neat.

I don’t know it it’s clear or not, but Vixen sucks at Transfiguration and Herbology. Unless she’s transfigurating herself lol

Sirius and Remus have kissed in the past (It was a dare).

Sirius does not show his drawings to anybody bc Walburga was a bitch to him when he was little and he's terrified people will react the same way.

Sirius and James are both brilliant.

Remus is too, but that's because he feels a burdensome pressure from Lyall to be perfect. If he is perfect, he cannot be made less for being a werewolf (according to Lyall).

Same thing happens to Lily, she feels the need to be perfect because she is a muggle-born and she wants to constantly prove herself that she is worthy (kinda like Hermione).

Also, Snape is a very sensible subject for her. She is the kind of girl to see the good in people, even when that good is very small. And even when that good has wronged her, which obviously clashes with a lot of her friends' opinions (mainly Marlne and Vixen who are stubborn as hell)

Lily had a crush on Remus in third year, but he said "thanks" when she admitted it since he thought she meant it platonically.

Also, that's when he started to figure out his sexual preferences

Remus introduced Sirius to muggle music but now Sirius is the one that introduces Remus to new bands.

Nina has a crush, you all know who she is

Lily is bi, male leaning

Peter isn't stupid, but he is kinda clumsy and bad at quizzes, which is why he constantly gets outshined by the rest of the Marauders.

He's good a transfiguration thought (mostly things).

Vixen's parents aren't evil, but their methods are more than questionable.

Her dad really, really wants that position in the ministry. Although he wants it for the greater good, the fact that he doesn't care how to achieve it is the questionable part.

Evan has an homophobic dad

Barty's father is absolutely neglectful (kinda like Vixen's) [But that's canon, isn't it?]

Also, Barty is insanely clever, like he might be the smartest person in the school.

Tom Riddle, before the whole Avada thing, was attractive, even for a 50-year-old. I mean think Michael Fassbender's level of handsome.

But this was Harry. There was an odd sense of familiarity that had grown over the months. As though she'd had eyes as powerful as Harry's stare at her before.

"If we're alright…, do you think we could hang out this summer?" he asked, smiling hesitantly.

Ginny gave him a bewildered smile. "Of course, we will. I'll come with Ron and the twins,"

Harry smiled briefly before he frowned slightly, averting his eyes and pulling at a thread on his jersey. "Right, yeah… but see- I sort of meant that… like, that you and I could hang out like… just me and you…" his cheeks were flushed red, and Ginny grinned stupidly.

"Yeah… yeah alright. That'll be fun," she replied. She didn't let herself think about it too much. Not with what was about to take place.

Harry’s magic ripping through the dorm in a desperate attempt to force the world into something that won’t make him be the weapon that is demanded of him. The arms around him tightening and promising that he won’t have to. That no matter what is to come for both of them here he will always be Just Harry.
