It often amazes me, the absoluteness used to judge the lives of people whose existence is layers of grey upon grey. Escape is rarely a matter of just walking away. It’s often a slow, hard-wrung road of scraping inch by inch together for yourself, and that too on the days that you don’t lose any further ground. People who choose to dwell in places of hurt rarely suffer from a lack of effort, but rather from the exhaustion that seemingly endless struggles and defeats breed. And that’s the part that’s curiously invisible. There she was carrying the weight of a space filled with giggling hearts and ruptured hopes on her tiny shoulders. It felt as though she was running from things that breaks man and rips him from his own skin. I could feel the weight colliding with my heart with no idea what it was. It burned like sorrow, like needles hungering for a vein to drink from. . She had no idea what life was though she shouldered this load with a strength that I didn’t possess nor did I have the heart to bear. I shuttered in amazement wanting to do more but could do nothing so I held her. The room felt small as her sorrows calmed like a southern wind blowing against the tall meadow grass where I played as a kid watching it sway back and forth. . As she lay there in my arms with those naïve tears streaming, I wept for the innocence that she was born to lose to a world that she would fall into a moving bus to save. It would be these same cartoon faces who would ridicule and trample her emotions like pieces of candy dropping to a dirt floor. In honor of Women's Day ~ This poem is dedicated to all the beautiful and lovely women that dare or not dare to escape pains of old and rise in healing and declare happiness anew. 🙏🕊💞💞💞🕊 . The Majestic Within Under the purple sky and bright lit moonlight she sits on a boulder when she hears what He told her. Through the gentle whisper of His voice, He tells her she has a choice. "You can sit on that boulder and sadden your life away or you can lift your chin and rise to begin the road you have always been worthy of. The sovereignty within is your next of kin and when you behold this, you will know, it has always been your gift, the majestic within." She gazes upon the sea and beholds her reflection of sadness on the moons mirror. In that moment, indeed she lifts her chin and with loving eyes, she gazes upon the purple sky. She stands tall, spreads her wings and elects to fly out of the memories that stoop her into gloomy. She sheds the old to bring in the new and rises to the equation of love and light where she clearly beholds she is a woman of self-worth. On a grandeur scale, her importance is the majestic within. For her endowment is greater than the value of rubies and gold. She knows she is the queendom to her freedom, the queenship to self-friendship where she has the power to love herself and make righteous decisions to a greater future. And so she elects to adopt and adapt to the majestic within where she claims and declares she is the queen of her demise. This is where she certainly grows wise and takes the whispered voice advice because she decides, He does not have to tell her twice. There’s a me that I’m dying to meet. I see him in hues of gray hiding behind shadows of tattoos inked by life in a desperate plea of his submission. I see him daydreaming lost in the faces and places that time never loved; there’s a void cut into his soul by wasted attempts to hold something. . I look into the mirror and see glimpses of him before he hides his face like an island of manikins sold off to captivity. He’s panicking, hiding in plain sight, picking up pieces of himself left by a woman who was left by a woman and if infinity resembles a figure eight laying on its side bleeding out so has he been hollowed as if emptied into a shallowness resembling happiness. . He resembles life but his inner struggle resembles murder fighting for something that hangs overhead like fruit on a vine just within sight but still out of reach. “Hope”, he repeats. He owns a smidge and bleeds for life as he stands beneath like an open pitcher hopeful for its nectar as it oozes like a slow moving train. I feel him stirring inside though we have yet to meet. He holds out for something invisible called hope and because of hope, happiness he hopes will follow. He’s an optimist, but hides somewhere inside until happiness shines its beauty – he smiles but he’s still hiding. Her soul was dark, whitewashed by the years of denials she suffered. Each defeat was a little harsher until she gave up trying. Her body much like her spirit had become road-kill somewhere along her journey through life. She was alone now, and living was an afterthought, a casualty much like her dreams but there was no crying for her. She was proud and did that for herself. No need for wasted tears she must have thought but I saw it, her head was tucked beneath the covers as if to conceal her struggles as she faintly remembered what life was before. She didn’t know but I saw it! . There are words to describe people like her but none fit quite right so I simply called her “grandma” or “ma”. At times laying there picking with her toes she was a beautiful little girl while other times she was a broken mess managing life by shrinking back inside of herself as though she never existed. I bled for her years, yearning that peace would fall and rest upon her shoulders, that she would bear the weight of suffrage in defeat no longer. I asked until my asking became prayers, and until my prayers became tears, and my tears became utterances. . Then all of a sudden, she began to weep for my weeping as though she had anything left to give but what she had she gave it all without indecision and when asked why, she paused and said, “that’s what love does son!” I didn’t quite understand it then but these days, I get it perfectly. You can’t convince your heart to do anything, it does what pleases it with no consideration of its own pain. . Simply said, “That’s what love does son!” Now I get it! That’s what love does... . E. W.
