i have so much to say aboht the avavav runway

can we hear it? because from one side i get it, the whole thing is about the rush of the fashion world, the hidden part that people don’t get to see. but from another side… idk it looked kinda corny to me… there were some cool outfits but overall i found it underwhelming

I forgot about this ask so im gonna give a very brief rundown of what I think then maybe get into it once I get my fashion blog set up properly bc im too scared to write on it rn .

long and short of it is that these runways are less about the clothing itself and more about the impact and presentation of the collection. its more of a performance art piece than it is an opportunity to observe trends in high end fashion and this is something that avavav is popular for- their Milan fw23 show creating this narrative about fast fashion and the superficiality of the fashion industry with the clothes intentionally breaking and falling apart as the models walked down the runway. 2022 I think was her first show where all of the models intentionally tripped and fell and it sent the fashion realm into a tizzy bc ppl were so upset at the bad quality of the show which is exactly what she wanted to happen bc it was a commentary on the seriousness of the fashion industry and the desire to seem rich that causes this disconnect from our humanity because we want to be perfect we want everything to be perfect and I love her for that .

avavav runways are just so iconic to me I love the way she utilises clothing, the set, even the models to create this story and bring to light an understanding within the audience of the internal problems of the fashion industry like this one about how designers are expected to churn out designs keep on top of ever-changing trends and how designers struggle to meet these expectations because their creative freedom is limited by time constraints and pressure so its this display of unfinished garments it starts seemingly fine until the model turns round with and 'add back? note where the rest if the garment should be and that evolves to become these shapeless oddly structured garments like the styrofoam blocks the duct tape the post it note suit to close the collection that just visualises the designers desperation to finish the collection on time now just using anything around her to add to garments that she can fix later she can shape later she'll do it she's just under so much pressure right now hence the collection title no time to design .

I love beate karlsson I think its such and interesting display of activism and commentary through fashion snd I bet its fun for the models too .

Madrid Week 7: Viva Italia (not america..?)

Hola a todxs :). Niko back here again with week 7’s blog of my study abroad experience in Madrid! Like I mentioned in last week’s blog, this last weekend I traveled to Italy, and this past weekend I was in Sevilla, Spain. My trip to Italy was particularly transformative and jam packed with personal reflection. Read on for the reflection, stay for the photos (and Italian food p*rn). This blogpost probably took the longest for me to write, and was honestly pretty difficult for me to put in words. I hope I captured my thoughts well, and I always welcome feedback and discussion to any and all readers (at any point in time!).

Argentina (but aren’t we talking about Italy?)

As I’ve mentioned before, the summer after freshman year, I studied for 6 weeks in Buenos Aires, Argentina. One particular weekend, I took a trip to Iguazu Falls — the largest waterfall in the Americas by volume, and one of the 7 natural wonders of the world.

Long story short, I got onto a tour bus with a bunch of strangers from around the world, drove 15 hours across Argentina to get to the falls, randomly selected hostel room groups based on who was sitting nearby on the bus, and ended up in a group with 4 girls from Mexico, my travel buddy from the USA, and 1 girl from Italy.

We spent a wonderful weekend together seeing the waterfalls (barring a short-lived but intense spout of food poisoning after eating something funky at a Brazilian buffet), and formed the foundation of what could turn into lasting friendships. But, come Monday, we parted ways, not sure whether we would ever see each other again.

This trip was the first time I went into a travel situation without a true support system, and an important exercise in “trusting in the process” — and It helped me realize that I was capable of forming meaningful connections across language barriers, cultures, and in un-traditional social situations.

If it wasn’t obvious already, you might be able to see where this little backstory fits into my recent trip to Northern Italy. Before I departed for Spain in January, I sent a text to Gaia — the Italian friend I met in Iguazu — that I would be in Europe for the semester, and would love to see her at some point if the logistics work out.

Now we actually talk about Italy

Flash forward a few months, and well, the logistics worked out. Although our original plan was to go skiing in a small village in the Alps, we ended up being unable to due to weather issues. Instead, Gaia, her friend Camilla, and I took a tour of Northern Italy, visiting Turine, Asti, Moncalvo, and Milan.

In a way, this trip was an even bigger exercise in trust — although this time, it was my gut I was trusting, not the process. I hadn’t seen Gaia in nearly 2 years, and the only other time we had met lasted just 3 short days. I was about to spend another 3 days with her — but this time, nearly every waking moment would be spent together.

For some reason, the thoughts of “what if we didn’t get along?”, “what if it was awkward?”, “what if we got on each other’s nerves?” — normal things to think in this situation — never crossed my mind. I trusted my gut: that Gaia was someone that I got on with in the past, and I had a feeling that the people we grew into over the past two years would mesh just as well.

So, I didn’t worry. And I was right not to. After a short period of hesitancy, we clicked. We spent the weekend learning about each other — both from a personal and cultural point of view.

And by the end of this trip, I felt culturally enriched. There’s a level of cultural intimacy (is that a term? Well now it is, I just coined it) that can only be experienced by being someone who has lived and breathed that culture for their whole life — something that I feel like I’ve never had the pleasure of experiencing in my own heritage, first or second-hand.

A short aside on heritage in the USA

Ethnically, I am half Italian, half Greek. My great grandparents immigrated to the USA from the south of Italy through Ellis island, raising my grandmother, who gave birth to my mom. 4 generations later, I feel more comfortable calling myself Italian-American than Italian.

My mom’s side of the family was raised in northern New Jersey. I was raised Roman catholic, and I have 11 first cousins. Family gatherings are loud and boisterous, and people talk with their hands. My grandmother makes delicious Italian cookies called Pizzelles, and we call dish towels Mopinas (which isn’t even in the italian dictionary — it must have evolved on its own. Call it Englitalian [Italinglish? Coined.] ).

And that’s about all I’ve got to hold onto of Italian culture. Although I have more contact with Greece through the Orthodox Christian community and my direct-immigrant grandparents, I’ve never felt particularly connected to either culture. I don’t speak either language, and up until this past summer (when I visited Greece), I’d never been to either country.

People from the United States of America — especially, I think, those in the Northeast — place emphasis on their ethnic heritage that those from other countries around the world do not. Ask an American, and they’ll probably know where their blood comes from — if the records of their ancestor’s immigration do exist. Ask an Italian, or a Spaniard, and they probably will not. Odds are, in fact, that their blood will be just that: Italian, or Spanish.

The USA is a country built on immigrants, and it continues to be so to this day — and to me, it somehow feels wrong to not know anything about your cultural background.

This is a weirdly complex topic — one that I’ve thought about a lot —but bear with me here (and keep in mind, this is all from my personal point of view, and I welcome all new perspectives! Feel free to send me a message to discuss🙂). I think that, in the more liberal sphere of American adolescents, it’s almost “bad” to not know anything about your heritage — especially among white people, which is a label that I identify with. The USA has done a lot of messed up stuff in the world, and I think this is true to an extent that young Americans feel a desire to distance themselves from their nationality.

Instead, we grasp on to what we have that sets us apart from it — where our parents, grandparents, or great-grandparents come from. It gives us something to point to in conversations, something that lets us say “see, look, I’m not just a white-washed American, I’m cultured”, something to help us feel like we have more depth — especially in a country where everything feels like it comes from something else.

This is why I mentioned above that this is more common in the Northeast — although I can only truly speak on what I’ve experienced in Northern Virginia and in the University of Michigan. When I think of the term “melting pot”, I think of places like New York City. Southern states, and perhaps those in the West, have developed a culture that feels more unique, more distinctly American, and this is why (from my outside perspective) it seems like something more people feel proud of and claim as their own.

As I mentioned, this perspective comes from personal experience. And this is all something I’ve felt as a white American, at least 2 generations removed from my “mother countries”. After spending a weekend in Italy, I finally got a piece of that contact that I had always craved.

Italo-

Italian culture is just that — uniquely italian. Food, history, architecture, art — not only is it unique, but it is rich. From the first day that I spent with Gaia and Camilla, it was apparent that they felt a deep connection, pride, and understanding of their culture — and this is something that they graciously and enthusiastically shared with me.

I now have a greater — albeit limited — understanding of what it means to be Italian, in Italy. I learned about Italian espresso, when to have it (spoiler alert — any time of day is game), how to prepare it, and how it tastes. Some of my favorite moments of the trip were peacefully spent over the breakfast table in Gaia’s home, enjoying a light carb heavy breakfast and freshly brewed coffee.

We ate simple, delicious food at every restaurant we went to. The food was less extravagant than I expected it to be. Most of the meals were simple, with a focus on the ingredients and their preparation. Pastas, pizza, Milanese, Ragu, more pasta. Tiramisu, and gelato, too.

We had a night out — first to aperitivo, then to dinner, then to a bar that was built in an old desecrated church, then to a cheesy karaoke bar where the whole place was singing old Italian songs at the top of their lungs — with a group of 12 in Gaia’s hometown, which was made up of friends stemming from her high school days. The biggest difference between the Italian dinner party and an American one — we took our time. There was a feeling of ease at the table. Nothing was rushed. We enjoyed each dish, each glass of wine, and over everything, enjoyed each other’s company. The focus was on the people and the conversation, not on what was to be ordered and how fast it came out. I hope to bring this rhythm back to Ann Arbor with me (but that may be more difficult than I think. See footnote 1 below*).

We explored multiple Italian cities, and walked a TON. I learned an interesting perspective of Milan (which was a beautiful city) from Camilla’s boyfriend — Milan is Italy to Europe, and Milan is Europe to Italy. (See footnote 2**). The architecture was beautiful, and after a rainstorm, Milan looked magical. The ground was sparkling, reflecting the dramatically lit buildings of the city center in the puddles that gathered on the ground. I saw the Italian countryside, picturesque rolling hills backdropped by an epic sunlit cumulo-nimbus cloud.

I even learned a base of the Italian language (I probably said “Come si dice” 100 times) that will serve me well if and when I want to learn it in the future — or if I ever get my Italian citizenship and decide to move there. Guess only time will tell.

3 days is not a long period of time, but I can confidently say now that I understand a little better what it means to be Italian. I feel more connected to my cultural heritage — and in turn, I feel more connected than ever to my native culture in the USA.

It’s true that the USA has done a bunch of messed up stuff in the world. Imperialism, war crimes, political and economical extortion — the list goes on. But the longer I spend in Europe — the more I come into contact with different cultures, and understand foreign perspectives on the USA — the less these things feel like they’re inside a black box. Instead of avoiding these hard truths, I can face them head on — allowing me to acknowledge the bad and the good that comes with US culture.

A big critique I’ve heard abroad is that the United States has no culture of its own — but I don’t think that’s true. The USA is a place where global cultures collide, providing its citizens the opportunity to experience bits and pieces of the world and giving rise to unique elements born from this fusion.

Over the past 2 months, I’ve slowly shifted away from the feeling of shame that comes with being an American in Europe — and that’s thanks to a willingness to learn, adapt to, and accept cultures that I experience while I’m abroad (re: cultural humility, blogpost coming soon). Now, I’ll proudly say that I’m 50% Greek, 50% Italian, and 100% American. With my continuously evolving understanding of my individual parts (and all of the other cultures I come into contact with, especially Spain), I feel like I can better understand and contribute to that fusion, both in the melting pot of the United States, and as an international citizen in Europe — enriching the lives of myself and those I come into contact with.

Such is becoming “cultured” — a concept that has a bit of a pretentious connotation (IMO), but is worth striving for. I’ll be returning to Italy for spring break (Rome, Florence), so hopefully I’ll continue to develop this connection then. I also bookmarked in Google maps here all the places I visited in Italy this trip (and will do so in the next one) if you're considering taking a trip and want recommendations!

I planned on writing about Sevilla this week too, but I think this post has gone on long enough. I thoroughly enjoyed the different vibe it has from Spain, even through the rainy weather we experienced.

* In Italy, and the rest of Europe, servers get paid fair wages. In the USA, it’s not required, because it’s expected that servers will make up the difference in tips. I worked as a server for 2 summers, and made $3.50 an hour. The amount of money I made in a night was directly correlated to the number of tables I turned over. As a result, I did my best to get orders in fast, food out faster, and clear the table as quickly as I could so that I could make more money. Until this fact changes, I think it’s hard to have the same no-rush Italian experience over dinner unless you’re really conscious of it. Personally, if I’m not feeling pressure from a server to leave quickly, I’m likely feeling a sense of guilt for staying too long and reducing their nightly wage, no matter how well I tip. Maybe home cooked meals are the answer, which I’ll hopefully be well practiced with next semester :)

**To Europeans, they look at Milan and see what they think of Italy. The world capital of fashion, beautiful architecture, prosperous and well known city. Italians look at Milan and see what they think of as Europe —highly international, intercultural, and as a result more gentrified and expensive. I found this to be really interesting. Is there a US city that fits this bill?

You sighed as you looked at the pretty earrings and necklaces. You and Charles were spending the day in Milan. This morning he had to go to Maranello for some last minute things, which gave you a headache, because he had been so busy the last week. You felt like you had barely seen him. The last time you had sex was on the night of the gala, and while you understood he was busy and exhausted from the long days and the amount of flights in a week, you were desperate for some attention. You went into the store of jewelry to find a nice gift for one of your family members for Christmas, currently stranded in the rings department. Charles phone rung the second you entered the store, so he told you he waited outside for you.

You eventually found something you liked, and you took it to the cash desk to buy it. “That’s such a coincidence.” You cringed at hearing Felipe’s voice, but you turned to him with a smile as he had a bag of the same store in his hand. “Hi Felipe, that’s a coincidence indeed. What are you doing in Milan?” you asked politely, looking over at Charles, who was still on the phone. You looked back at Felipe, a grin curling your lips as you both walked outside of the store. “I was visiting some friends and decided to go for some Christmas shopping, seems like you’re doing the same? You look pretty, by the way” Felipe said. Charles hung up the phone to join you, his jaw already clenching as he heard Felipe talking to you. “Yes, we are. Charles had to go to Maranello this morning and we decided to go to Milan and stay the night before going back to Monaco,” you said.

You looked over at your boyfriend, who greeted Felipe politely, but you could tell Charles would smother him with his bare hands if he was allowed. “You look great, Felipe. Have you been working out?” You asked, touching his arm softly, causing the driver to blush and Charles to nearly choke on his saliva. “Well, yeah, training already started, have to stay fit for next year,” Felipe grinned. You giggled, and Charles’ hand moved to your lower back, ready to usher you forward. “Sorry to interrupt, but we have a brunch appointment at eleven, we have to go,” Charles said. “Oh, right,” you smile. “It was nice seeing you, Felipe. Happy holidays!” you reply. You’re clearly proud of yourself, as Charles didn’t speak up until Felipe was fully out of hearing distance. “Why did you say that?” he asked right away, pulling you around the corner as you walked back to his car.

“Oh, it caught your attention?” you play coyly. “You never flirt back,” Charles says, still opening the car door for you before he sits down himself. “Funny how I had to do that in order to shift your focus on me,” you reply. “I mean, you didn’t even notice that I got myself off in the shower this morning,” you purr as he started the car. He looked over at you. “And you were already asleep last week, so, I had to get my toys out to be satisfied,” you sighed dramatically, looking down at your nails. “I’m sure Felipe would help me if I asked nicely,” you say. “Enough,” Charles growls. “Call the restaurant to cancel the brunch,” he says. “You’re in for it, princess.” Charles drove back to the hotel instead, not hesitating to throw you on the bed and show you all corners of the room, fulfilling all your needs he had neglected.

chisme incoming and i know it's insane but it is so weird that the gossip page that exposed rebecca's name in monaco and was the FIRST who posted about the latest video of them together is followed by carlos' parents. and this person's caption makes it seem like they were the one that took the video, but 1) the person running the page is portuguese and i doubt they are in spain/milan wherever that video was taken 2) even if so there are zero chances they were the one who caught them 3) the angle of the video is so weird, why is it that stable and how did they know it was going to be them 4) the vid was posted in the middle of the night in europe, if you took such a video you wouldn't wait to post it - this leaves the explanation that they were sent that video from /someone/ and were told to post it. and we know how much the sainz family likes to be involved with all the paps stunts for hola, but maybe they realized people don't fall for it anymore. whatever is happening is so fucking weird.

i have lots of conflicting thoughts on this bc i do think the family thrives (incl. carlos) from their popularity so there is a degree in to which it is good for them to be talked about but id also argue that it doesnt look good on carlos at all, so idk really.

And I’d love for him to still be with Neymar (that’s if Neymar even ends up staying if Leo renews… so many “ifs” atm lol) but the ultras don’t treat him well so that kinda sucks. But genuinely I do think he had good moments when the right players were there w him (I mean if we think of the arg boys and the beginning of the season was already going sm better for him compared to the prior year). Ofc Barca is another option cause that’s literally his home and he already knows so many players that I feel like the re-integration wouldn’t be too hard (but I think if he were to play they’d have to move Gavi around or something like that right?? idk that’s just stuff I had read online 😭) There’s also a part of me that kinda wants to see him at City bc of Pep and Pep would know how to play him. Also I think him and Haaland would be funny playing together. Idk why. Maybe the height difference. But City is doing well rn so idk if he would disrupt the flow they already have going on yk?? sooooooooooo the gig was PHENOMENAL i definitely think it doesn't translate in footage/videos how fucking HARD blind channel FUCKS live. even the people who were there for electric callboy seemed to be very impressed and this made me very proud of my boys 🥺

i was in second row (thanks to @sokeakanava and @braindeadfern I'LL NEVER THANK YOU ENOUGH 😭), on Olli and Tommi's side, and there was basically no space between the barricade and the stage so we were EXTREMELY close to them! i experienced the infamous Olli Eye Contact thing™️ and lost my breath for a few seconds. just so you know everything you read about it is true. another Olli thing: during the show a girl asked him for a pick and he didn't have one so he literally went to tommi, asked him for one, and handed it over to her and i swear it was SO CUTE???

i couldn't take my eyes off joel because he's the most handsome man ive ever seen in my life but maybe im biased 🙄 i genuinely thought he was extremely charismatic but every one in the band is!

aleksi is a fucking dream of a man im a bit ☹️ i couldn't see him very well from where i was (i miscalculated the size of the stage 💀). thankfully he moves a lot so it wasn't really a problem 🥰

these three were the ones that struck me the most but it's probably because joel and aleksi are my favorite and olli was right in my face (and extremely attractive 😳). the others were amazing too and their energy is something absolutely incredible. they're just so good!!

fyi one morning left (which i knew nothing about) and electric callboy fucking FUCK as well. the standard electric callboy sets is VERY high and i might go as far as to say this is the BEST line up I've ever seen in a show, even if i didn't know oml. i had the time of my life for the whole 3 hours 30 minutes. seriously

some other little facts: the venue was weird?? because it had this park area around the actual venue and we didn't even get in line until 5.30pm (with doors opening at 6.30); we sat around under these gazebos just chilling and minding our business. A FEW METERS FROM US the bands were just. minding their own business under their own gazebos. look:

those were the gazebos where the bands hung out and on the far left of those, if aleksi had filmed a bit farther you could have seen us. so we basically stayed there all day NEXT TO THE FUCKING BANDS who also had to pass by us every time they had to go to the bus. i didn't really feel like going to talk to them and ask for pics because idk I'm always terrified of bothering people 😅 but some fans who were with us did manage to get pictures and stuff. at some point aleksi put a chair in the middle of nowhere and was just minding his business on his phone and two girls went up to him. i followed the whole scene and they talked a bit, he gave them a picture and an autograph and seemed so so sweet my heart melted guys 😭😭

(actually when i got to the venue (around 2pm) and went up to Eda and Karla, while i was hugging eda she went "look who's behind you" and it was aleksi sitting under the gazebo and i let out a unsettling screech lmao i wasn't expecting to see them)

Joel, Niko and Olli got there later while the others were already there when i arrived. like I'm gonna skip telling you about how I felt when saw joel the first time 😳 i found it funny tho that he'd just posted that story with the Armani Exchange bag after going shopping in Milan and when i see him he has an Armani Exchange t-shirt on 😂

they hung out in that park area after the show as well, but i only saw Joel passing by quickly (and the pictures he shared with fans were taken at that time)

another random thing: santeri changed clothes in the park. with all of us present. like i get it the lack of nudity taboo in Finland and everything but he was literally just standing there in his underwear 😂😂

this is all i can think of rn but I'm still processing the whole experience so i might add to this later 😅❤️

detailed post about my thoughts/criticisms of milan's recent performances that no one asked for but hey!! why not. i'm in a silly giggly mood rn so it's all lighthearted. no one's obliged to read i'm just rambling

overall: not a great mentality in the team rn. the players get nervous in important games (first ten minutes against inter), and get nervous and frustrated when losing. after spezia's 2nd goal you could see slips, more pointless fouls, more mistakes in play and passing. as a team there isn't much mental fortitude and that can prove to be a killer. for some reason we only show up against top-table opponents (napoli, lazio, atalanta but that was a while ago) and can't handle it against anyone else? idk but it's weird.

on pioli: is he to blame for lack of depth and the players making stupid mistakes on their own? i don't think so. but tactically it's undeniable that there are decisions he could make better (the calabria-dzeko mismatch has been talked about a lot). and he should be the one helping with team spirit and mentality. with everything happening right now we're stagnating with no real improvement. i respect what he's done for milan before and i do like him as a dude but i think in the summer it's time for him to go. (i don't think an immediate sacking would help as it may cause too much disruption and we might not be able to find a better replacement so soon)

on the defense: i just really don't understand why it's so inconsistent. probably due to the mentality stuff i mentioned earlier. i think kjaer/thiaw/theo have been the most decent recently, as tomori's been inconsistent all season and i don't know what calabria's doing half the time he's on the pitch. and we need to start conversations about kalulu. ever since he came back from injury he's kind of really stunk. maybe it's just me tho but i don't think he's been at all up to his standards recently. again the defense looked really solid vs lazio but against inter i felt like it was january again and that is certainly not a good thing...

on the midfield: well bennacer is out for the rest of the season so it's mostly a write-off for this area i think we're finished djfkdhfdjh. tonali/krunic nothing to say, i do think they've been solid and important even if krunic kind of ghosted against inter from what i can remember. as for pobega.... did yall see that "pass" he tried to do in the dying minutes that went straight out of play. that sums him up for me, he's a hard worker and has a good shot but other than that he doesn't really bring quality. as for quality, THANK FUCKING GOD pioli finally brought out adli. he didn't have much time but imo he really shone, good control of the ball and didn't manage to lose it in a stupid way like how most of our players do. just checked fotmob too and he completed the most dribbles of any player!!! good for him but when he came on in the 70th minute that speaks a lot about the others.

on the attack: one decision i will consistently fight against pioli over is the decision to play brahim as an attacking midfielder. HE'S NOT THAT GOOD AS AN AM. he just gets fucking bodied by everyone like against inter because he's so small (that should've been a penalty on him today btw), he works better out wide with more space. about saelemaekers, i've grown to respect him a lot recently, it feels like he always gives his best. even if his best isn't always like... top tier lmfao i still respect what he tries to do. with leao injured i thought he did pretty well as a deputy. as for messias.... i'm just gonna include this image here.

anyway back to it. we all know origi has been utter booty ass for most of this season. but honestly the last two or three games? he actually looks like a football player now LMFAOAOAOAI. he can actually run and do things with the ball who woulda thought!!! i'm waiting for the corner taken quickly on tuesday. cdk however... he looked somewhat decent for like one or two games recently but today he was back to being a passive force. i really don't know what to say about this boy, honestly i feel bad for him and i don't know what could fix it. a better coach maybe hmm??? hm??? anyway onto giroud, it pains me to say it but he really has not been good lately. i honestly just think he's tired. he constantly presses which wears out his legs, he barely even wins aerial duals or headers anymore which is supposed to be his specialty. idk man. he scored once in all of march and once in april. the busy schedule obviously doesn't help. he needs rest and so do i (typing this from my bed)

yk this anime reminds me of that one tiktok sounds with the garden song that says "no matter where you are, everyone is always connected". it's quite cool to think about it holistically, but in a sense it's also so surreal, and even scary. this masterpiece is an extreme reflection of our world imo, with many elements of truth and reality. anyways i'll leave this kind of stuff for another post (draft lol). but honestly though, i really liked this series. maybe since it's older, it has that sense of authenticity?? not invalidating other anime series but idk. i really enjoyed it.
