#water 7 is my favourite setting in one piece because of its politics and political history

water 7 geopolitics.
water 7 is an independent citystate of the world government despite having a working contract with the world government they don't have to enforce their law because they're not under the world government
it's complicated, the laws are independent and the world government doesn't enforce their law 99% of the time because of the fact galley la could just stop making boats for them and that would be extremely bad
galley la is able to use the boat relationship as leverage politically to the detriment of the world government (this is why they got away with enies lobby no consequences style) as long as they keep making boats for them/in aid of the civil war on pirates.
water 7's political strategy protects their own independence while playing both sides in regards to the civil war on pirates, which you could argue is actively harming other nations independence of the world government (like wano)

The Mask Falling Hints MASTERPOST
Clearly I have wayyy too much time on my hands!
I have compiled a list of information Samantha Shannon has divulged on social media about The Mask Falling, mostly paraphrased from her Tumblr and Twitter. Some of it dates back as far as 2016, so it’s not certain that all of it will happen - I’ve included an asterisk for the tidbits in which Samantha explicitly mentioned that it was pre-editing. I didn’t include a link to the original source because that would be too much work, but if anyone has questions I can probably find it pretty easily! The recent ARC reviews also include some hints, but I haven’t included them because that would be a crap-ton of text. Feel free to add anything I missed! Anyway enjoy the fruits of my obsession!
Hints:
We will find out how badly Warden was affected by Paige’s torture - there’s a lot about the effects of her torture in the book
The non-binary character is a free-world spy, pretending to be French
Paige has issues with drinking water and showering
Paige will make another valiant effort to get Warden to talk about his feelings
Paige’s demisexuality is clarified -  she reflects on the way she wants in comparison to the way the allosexual Nick and Eliza do
Paige gets slammed into the wall by someone, but not Terebell (also not Warden, because then she would be very dead)
The grey market storyline continues
Etymological connection of Arcturus meaning bear-guard and Mahoney meaning descendant of the bear is worked into the books
Paige cries
Paige’s PTSD is a thread throughout the book
Paige has mental and physical difficulties following her torture
“The scope of everything gets bigger, there's more focus on the free world and how it interacts with Scion, and you'll find out more about Rephaite history and the origin of clairvoyance.”
You may figure out what happened to Procyon
Warden’s aura type is mentioned*
Paige starts calling Warden Arcturus. They have a discussion about it. But she keeps calling him Warden in front of other people.
The prologue begins about an hour after The Song Rising
Warden asks Paige to teach him Irish
Contains clues as to the big secret at the heart of the series
Warden does a few very sweet things
We’ll find out a reason why Nashira considers Warden a possession rather than a partner*
Paige is at her most fragile
One of the characters eats an orange
There is a distinct Priory parallel in one section of the story
Paige asks Warden if Rephaim can get drunk
We will find out if Rephaim can get physically ill
We’ll get a piece of information that may help us understand the Rephaite logic behind Warden feeding on Paige’s aura
More about the golden cord
Paige’s feelings with her father will be explored
We will find out why it was common knowledge amongst Rephaim that Terebell and Warden were once mated
Warden might tell us what would happen if he tried to eat
More about voyant-amaurotic sex will be explained
We will learn more about the Rephaim’s internal politics and conflicts
We get to see Paige’s birthday
We we’ll find out how Warden knows how to develop Paige’s gift*
Paige and Warden butt heads over right and wrong
We’ll find out why Warden said that Sargas are the only Rephs who choose their mates
We’ll find out more about the half-urge
We’ll find out more about the complicated history between Warden and Terebell
Warden is planning to learn Gaelic (pre-editing)
We’ll find out two of the reasons why Warden hates Nashira so much*
We’ll find out about the promise Warden made to Nashira that she alludes to before the Bicentary
Warden says something with an exclamation mark
Warden will tell us more about the memory of Terebell, and how it was a prelude to one of the defining moments of his existence
Paige visits Warden’s dreamscape a few times, but we only see it once
Paige addresses the author directly
Nick isn’t in the book at all
The plot takes place only in Paris
Paige dies her hair red
A character Samantha did not originally plan to be in TBS4 now is
There’s a big scene in the Sainte-Chapellle in Paris
The book is shaping up to be the darkest book in the series, but also contains the most jokes
Paige feels really ill for most of the book
Samantha starts hinting at the Grand Backstory of the series
Paige is under strict orders to stay inside for a month, but she breaks the rules to explore Paris
The main antagonist was born in “the burning summer of 2019”
We’ll find out about two of Warden’s past relationships
Paige and Warden have to get food deliveries from a guy called Albéric because they’re not allowed to go outside
There’s espionage
Warden uses the super unnecessary word “sennight”
A lot of the book takes place underground
We learn if a non-polyglot could ever learn Gloss
There is a Very Awkward Conversation*
There is a time skip between the fourth and fifth books
Warden smiles a lot… with his eyes
The ending will change everything
Scion must change its public face due to an event that happens at the end
People who liked The Mime Order will love it
TBS4 picks up when Paige is resting.
It will go into more detail about how Rephaim emerge
It marks the beginning of Beautiful Dresses in The Bone Season
It introduces a Rephaite character Samantha absolutely loves, with her favorite Rephaite name
There’s a scene Samantha has wanted to write for years
The ending is very dark
There’s a cute priory reference
There’s a character Samantha loves - “she’s so cool that I don’t know how a nerd like me invented her”
“The relationship between Warden and Paige gets deeper and more complicated in this one, and you get to know Warden a little better.”
“[Paige and Warden] are together a lot in this book, as they’re sharing a safe house in Paris. It’s the first time they’ve spent a significant amount of time with one another since they escaped Sheol I.  You’ll actually glimpse the ways they both react to being stuck inside in The Mask Falling, as they’re meant to stay hidden in a safe house for a month so Paige can start to recover from her ordeal.”
“It’s a love song to Paris in the way The Mime Order was a love song to London.”
“[Paige and Warden do have some happy calm moments.] Although there’s a lot of action in the book, there’s also quite a lot of downtime. Paige is still recovering from her ordeal in the Archon, so she can’t always be out in the world kicking ass. She’s resting as well, trying to get her strength back.”
“I won’t lie, The Mask Falling is a book to fear . . . but there are some nice bits. Including some coffee-drinking.”
“[Paige and Warden] do so much in this book. So much.”
“Most of the characters who didn’t go to Paris are absent from TBS4.”
“Paige and Warden do so much in this book, I just couldn’t cram any other storylines in. However, several old friends do turn up in it, as well as a bunch of new characters I hope you’ll love as much as I do.”
“Paige [experiences the messiest-most-intense emotion in TBS4]. She goes through the emotional wringer in this one.”
“The second ‘arc’ has the same main characters and the same antagonist. The difference has more to do with the setting, the scope of the narrative, and the type of battle being fought against Scion. You’ll have a better idea of what I mean when you read the end of TBS4.”
“This book puts both [Paige and Warden] through the emotional wringer, but there are lighter parts as well.” “Nick meets an old friend while he’s in Sweden and Paige and Warden will be staying in central Paris, on Rue Gît-le-Cœur. You can see some of the locations from Book 4 here: [x]”
“TBS4 is basically just a long Hurt/Comfort piece with occasional and reluctant splashes of Action/Adventure”
“THE MASK FALLING leans a little more Adult than the other BONE SEASON books. The whole series is officially classified as Adult, but the first three aren't far off YA in terms of sexual content, violence etc. THE MASK FALLING is . . . maybe a tiny bit sexier.”
“Doing my final reread of THE MASK FALLING and naturally I've noticed a recurring phrase that I have used no less than thirty times in the manuscript.”
“It blows the world of The Bone Season right open. It’s where everything changes. It takes place in a brand-new setting and forms the bridge between the two ‘arcs’ of the series. I hope the ending will show readers get why I really do need seven instalments to tell this story.”
“Books 1-4 is what I call the “Scion arc”, but Scion is still a threat in Books 5-7. Book 4 is kind of in the middle, with more of a focus on Rephaim than there currently is in Book 3.”
“He’s in Book 4, he’s French, he’s voyant, and I’m writing his introduction scene now. I think I love him?”
“The draft is about 140 000 words long – a little shorter than The Mime Order – with a veritable tonne of action, espionage, international politics, eerie catacombs, old enemies, new friends, and messy, intense emotions packed into that word count.”
“This one combines my favourite elements of The Bone Season (Warden and Paige chats), The Mime Order (syndicate weirdness) and The Song Rising (heists and angst)”
“The fourth Bone Season book is well underway, and things are about to take a very dark turn for Paige.”
“It’s mostly focused on Paris, but you’ll find out bits and pieces about what’s happening in both England and Europe.”
“She’s suffering from PTSD and aquaphobia following her water torture in The Song Rising, so she’s pretty much in the ringer for the whole book. There are a few light moments, but she’s under a lot of stress from the start.”
“While I wouldn't call it spy fiction, TBS4 is delving into espionage territory as Warden and Paige, still exhausted from their tremendous efforts against Scion in The Song Rising, attempt to navigate the convoluted political and criminal networks of Scion Paris.”
“Book 4 is a touch more political, laced with subterfuge”

Part names*:
1. To Pay Thee Free
2. Turn the Anchor
3. Eurydice
Quotes:
“What the fuck is that?” she whispered to me. “Looks like a frozen rainbow.”
“The horizon was as red as if the fire still burned. I watched the sunrise from the roof. Fog breathed into every nook and alcove of Paris, laced over the dark crests of the river, blanched the skin to the pink of salmon. I was sure the air was still spiced with the tang of smoke.”
“So,” he said, “we are choosing larceny.” “Always so surprised when his criminal friend commits crimes.”
“I wouldn’t usually care who you’re riding at any given time”
“I sensed all of this was very important, but I had absolutely no idea what he was talking about”
“I picked up the floundering ribbons of my dignity and started over”
“His home was in decay, and mine lay in the shadow of the anchor. Scion had made wanderers of us.”
Current opening line (circa Dec 18, 2018): “The sun had been climbing over the cliffs when our ship had pared away from Dover.”
“Someone who had heard of me and whose first response had not been to try to kill me. What a treat.”
“A hollow ache stretched out within me. It started in the chambers of my heart, in a place that reached eternally for Ireland.”
“‘I promised you we would stay together,’ he said. ‘In the absence of other options, I will follow your lead on this matter.’”
“‘I’m fine.’ ‘Your attempt to mask the darkness under your eyes serves as compelling evidence of that. As does the full bowl of coffee.’ I cocked my head. ‘Did you just master sarcasm?’ ‘Paige.’ ‘It’s a cup of coffee. With… no handle.’”
“‘There’s no fireplace,’ I stated. ‘No.’ ‘But how are you-‘ A wild laugh was bubbling up. ‘How are you going to cope without one?’ ‘Cope,’ Warden repeated.  ‘You need one. To stare into, pensively. Did you know,’ I said to him, ‘that you do that a lot?’ He tilted his head, which only set off a fit of silent laughter. My ribs ached in protest.”
‘I mustered all the breath I had left and screamed, until I folded on myself and my voice burned to nothing.’
‘Who can break you now, Black Moth, now there is nothing left to break?’

May the 4th be with you recs!
Because fanfic is the reason I’m finally getting into Star Wars after all these years XDD
I’m gonna include the fic summaries and my takes, so plopping these under a cut for length. If you haven’t already read these, please go give them some love. And if you have, go give them some more! XD
I’m a fix-it, (at least mostly) everybody lives and (hopefully) nobody dies kinda gal, so while I certainly like something that hits in the feels, I don’t care for angst with no payoff at the end. Many of these are ongoing, but I’m confident enough in the overall feel of them to rec with that in mind. I also like long fics, so most of my recs will reflect that.
Hunting Towards Heartstill by blackkat
Pairing: Mace Windu/ CC-2224 Cody
Status: Complete, 45 chapters
Summary: Plo has an idea. Mace agrees, and everything snowballs right into hell from there.
(Or: Mace and Cody get married in order to give the clones citizen status. Before they can focus on that, though, they're going to have to deal with ancient Sith artifacts, evil prophets, plots to overthrow the Supreme Chancellor, lost planets, monsters warped by Sith alchemy, inconvenient feelings, and Darth Sidious turning his eye on a potential new apprentice. Just...not in that order.)
Notes: Kat’s going to have her whole section recc’d in a minute, but this one is near and dear to my heart, so it get’s a special spot. This is the one that got me into the Star Wars fandom at all. And by “into the fandom” I mean I have never seen/read a single piece of Star Wars media outside of gifsets and funky graphic t-shirts in my entire life. And now here we are XDD
In short, as with anything kat writes, the characterization is top-notch, the wit even more so, and the feels will leave you broken to pieces only to bring you back together better than when you started at the end of it all. Enjoy <3
All of blackkat’s Star Wars fics, by she who never expected to be a part of this fandom so everyone thank sol for being a bastard and cher for having terrible, amazing, tempting, too-good prompts XD
Notes: As promised, I did indeed just link all of blackkats Star Wars fics XD Most are one shots, with several longer ongoing, and one very special one complete. Pairings and settings will vary, but I can promise you one thing: you can absolutely trust kat with your heart, no matter how angsty it seems (tho take those cliffie warnings seriously!). Enjoy, and may the Force be with you! <3
The Hero With a Thousand Faces by beamirang
Pairing: Jango/Obi-Wan
Status: Part 1 is a one-shot prologue, part 2 ongoing
Summary: “We’re going to kidnap a Jedi?” Boba sounds far more excited by the prospect than most twelve-year-olds probably should. And, because he’s Jango’s boy, because he’s too kriffing smart for his own good, he catches on way too quickly. “Wait. Are we kidnapping your Jedi?”
Notes: Fantastic characterization and writing - very witty (as one would expect with Obi and Fett XD) but also excellent on the heavier emotional aspects as well.
The Desert Storm by Blue_Sunshine
Pairing: None
Status: 17 parts complete, part 18 ongoing
Summary: In Tatooine legend, the sandstorm is Lukka, the Fury, both cleansing and damning. Lukka, the slaves believed, was Justice, was he who remade the world, and remade the soul. The storm screams at him, and Obi-Wan Kenobi screams back.
Notes: It’s a time travel fic! It’s one of my favourite tropes when done correctly, and this one certainly does :) Love the characters, they have so much depth and growth over the series. And while this far it is 100% a “everybody lives nobody dies” kinda story, there is no sacrifice in plot or narrative tension. Wonderful proof that there can be other narrative stakes in a story than just character death.
Under One Flag by NeurotropicAgentX
Pairing: Padme Amidala/Obi-Wan Kenobi/Darth Maul
Status: Two single chapter parts. Marked as incomplete with no further updates since 2017, but the chapters stand alone, no cliffhangers.
Summary: The story of how Padmé Amidala becomes the reluctant Empress of the galaxy and acquires a pair of Force-sensitive bodyguards. Deals with the light and dark side conflict, the politics of an Empire, and Dathomirian Culture.
Notes: A fun little read! The dynamics between the three were interesting, and who doesn’t love the idea of Empress Padme? :D
By A Barista by Tomatosoupful
Pairing: Obi-Wan/Anakin
Status: Complete, 7 chapters
Summary: Obi-Wan/Anakin, Modern Coffee Shop AU unapologetically set in Australia. Some Star Wars story lines and character arcs adapted into modern coffee versions.Anakin doesn't really know why Qui-Gon hired him despite having no experience in coffee making or table service, and he knows this bothers the barista, Obi-Wan, but hey, at least he gets to look at the handsome guy while he complains.
Notes: Another fun little read! I love social disaster Ani in modern settings, ngl XD
The Snowball Effect by Ghost_Owl
Pairing: Obi-Wan/Anakin
Status: Complete, 2 chapters
Summary: Anakin had not meant to nail the cute guy from his building in the face with a snowball.Obi Wan had absolutely meant to hit him back.
Notes: Another cute read! Once again Ani is a disaster, and Obi-Wan only less so by direct comparison XD I particularly remember this story for the author coining the phrase I now recognize as my favourite paring trope - two halves of a whole idiot XDD
Reprise by Elfpen
Pairing: None
Status: 7 parts, current part ongoing
Summary: Ben Kenobi dies aboard the Death Star in the year 0 BBY. He wakes up shortly thereafter in the Jedi temple in the year 41 BBY. Haunted by memories and regret, Ben must forge a new path for himself in the Jedi Order of his youth while navigating the murky waters of time travel. Crafting a better future from bitter experience is hard, but learning to heal is even harder. Major AU.
Notes: This one I found on the heels of Desert Storm, and while they are initially cut from the same cloth, you’ll find they immediately develop their own unique flavours. If you like time-travel fix-its (which I do ;D) then this is a great read, and has some lovely art to go with it!
Life and What Comes After by Ibelin
Pairing: None
Status: First part one-shot complete, second part ongoing
Summary: Obi-Wan dies on Jabiim. Anakin blames himself, doesn't know how to go on and yet - he does. Maybe the Force rewards that kind of thing, or maybe he just gets lucky, but when a mission lands Anakin on a vaguely familiar planet, he gets a second chance to do what he knows he should have done in the first place: save his master.(And maybe a chance to save the galaxy, too.)
Notes: *Don’t worry, Obi-Wan does not in fact die!*
Ngl, what attracted me to this fic in the first place was the tag “Unrealistically Well-Adjusted Anakin Skywalker” X’D For all they say that though, his growth as a person is actually written very believably - he’s still Ani, but you see the work he put in. And damn do I love me some real communication between Obi and Ani, and damn do we ever get that here. Obi kinda backtracks that a bit with his own self-esteem issues in part two, but I have no doubt the boys will get through it!
Definitely recommend, it’s got some really wonderful family feels <3
Witness Me by SLWalker
Pairing: Obi-Wan/Maul
Status: 7 parts, final story part(s) ongoing (part 5 is the main series that’s ongoing, part 6 scattered one-shots, part 7 art for the series)
Summary: Instead of escaping to Lotho Minor, Maul's captured by the Order. Obviously, that changes everything.
Notes: I’m currently reading this one! The first several parts focus on building the relationship between Obi and Maul. Then in part 5 we start to focus more on Maul growing as his own person, though he is absolutely still Obi-Wans other half. Get ready for some clone feels, because I guarantee you will fall hard and fast for the Blackbirds once you meet them <3 <3 <3 I also appreciate that while there is definite censure for the Jedi council as a whole for certain decisions, and Anakin is his canon disaster self, there is no character bashing or throwing under buses, and conversely no hero worship either. Thus far everyone is treated fairly - I really enjoy that we tend to see not only several outside views of characters and situations, but also a lot of introspection as well.
If you’re in it for the people, this story is very much for you <3

Please comment and reblog if you enjoy! <3
***
One last time, she thought, staring at her reflection in the mirror. One last time then she'd tell him the truth, and it will be over.
Sam wanted to have that romantic dinner tonight, since it was Iris' actual birthday. She couldn't say no to him when he asked her on their first official date. Not when he looked at her, smile bright and eyes soft with adoration. So she said yes.
He was already waiting for her at his flat in the city. He'd left the compound in the early afternoon to get everything ready up there. Now it was almost time for Iris to join him.
A car was waiting for her outside. It would drive her there on autopilot then come back to the compound. She made her way down the stairs discreetly, careful not to step into a member of the team. She couldn't handle their disapproving gazes anymore.
New York City, as always, was buzzing with lights and excitement as the car made its way through the packed streets. Iris found herself growing more and more nervous as the car approached the red dot on the map. How should she tell him? When? How would he react? Or maybe she should just... leave?
A sigh fell off her lips as she laid her head back on the headrest.
She never should have agreed to come back to the US in the first place. Now she had a lover on one side of the Atlantic ocean, and a family on the other. Selfish and cruel. That was what she was. Not sparing a thought to the people she hurt.
"You have arrived to your destination."
The voice snapped Iris out of her thoughts. Her eyes scanned her surroundings before she allowed herself to step out of the grey car. She stepped into the building, her heels clinking on the floor. The receptionist greeted her, a polite smile on his face. After introducing herself and telling him why she was here, he kindly directed her to Sam's apartment.
Sam was certain he'd never been this nervous in his entire life. Not even during the first flight test with the EXO-7 wings. His apartment was filled with mouth-watering smells from the food he'd prepared - a three course meal for his girl. He had an arrangement of blue irises and red roses on the the table, soft music was playing in the background, setting a romantic atmosphere along with a few candles.
The sound of the doorbell resonated in the home, and his heart fell to the bottom of his stomach. On his way to the door, he stopped in front of the mirror to check his reflection one last time.
Breath got caught in his throat as he opened the door. A simple navy blue flared dress and heeled sandals was all she wore. Her hair was pinned in her regular sleek bun while small silver hoops adorned her ears.
"Hey," she flashed her a smile, and Sam realized he'd been staring at her for way too long.
"Hey, come in," he stepped aside, not taking his eyes off her as she walked in the apartment.
"Why are you looking at me like that? Is this too much? I didn't know what to wear because you said casual but at the same time it's our first date and—"
"Baby," Sam cut her rambling with an amused smirk. "You look amazing. You always do. Now come give me a kiss."
Her body moved on its own, attracted to Sam's as if it was a magnet, pulling her towards his warm, loving embrace.
Iris' eyes started to sting as she walked further into the flat, seeing how much effort Sam had put into the evening. She really didn't deserve him.
"You like it?" Sam's hand came to rest on her hip.
"Sam... I love it. Thank you."
"You're very welcome, baby girl," he whispered before giving her another sweet kiss.
Bottle of red wine was uncorked and poured into glasses. Iris, quite the connoisseur, marvelled at Sam's choice. Sheepishly, he admitted that he went around asking the team about some of Iris' favourite things to make the night as good as possible — including her favourite wine which according to Tony was any vintage French red with sweet undertones.
First glasses of wine down, hunger made stronger by drinking alcohol on an empty stomach, they soon settled around the table. As the city went about its usual frenzy outside the large glass windows, Sam brought the first course to the dining table, an entrée worthy of a Michelin star restaurant.
"Are you sure you never went to a culinary school somewhere?" Iris mused, tastebuds raving in her mouth.
"Just like to watch a lot of cooking shows," he smiled.
"This tastes fantastic. And with the wine, ugh! You blew my mind, Wilson."
Main course, then dessert. All while talking and talking, as if they never grew tired of each other's voice and mimics and stories. Gulps of wine, second bottle uncorked, melted chocolate and notes of berries from the wine mixed together to form an elixir, an aphrodisiac, like being around each other wasn't already enough for their bodies to turn into lava. More talking, until it was time to clean up.
Bare feet on the wooden floor, heels discarded in a corner of the room for her, soft padding of socks for him, they waltzed around the room, plates and cutlery clinking as they loaded the dishwasher.
Then the familiar, world famous guitar air filled the room, the notes soft and resonating throughout their entire bodies.
"Dance with me," Sam said.
So Iris put her hand in his, abandoning her half full, half empty glass of wine on the table, right next to the irises and roses, and danced with him.
"Wise men say only fools rushhhh iiin..."
"You are a terrible singer," Iris giggled in the crook of his neck.
"My cooking makes up for it."
"It sure does, Sammy. It sure does."
They let the music surround them, guide their movements as they swung around, hands caressing each other's body, fingers drawing intricate shapes and paterns over their clothes, lips leaving feathery kisses over necks and jaws, trying to find a way to transfer the intimacy of the moment.
For I can't help
Falling in love with you
"I love you, Iris."
Like a river flows
Surely to the sea
Darling so it goes
She sucked in a sharp breath as if she'd been hit — burned. But it had to be the most pleasant burn ever.
Some things
Are meant to be
"You don't have to say it back," Sam murmured. "I wanted to tell you."
"I— I love you too, Sam," she said, tears already streaming down her face.
Not stopping their swaying, Sam pulled back just enough to allow him to take Iris' face in his hands. That's when she noticed that the song still hadn't stopped — or rather, had started over.
"You planned this," she scoffed through her tears, rolling her eyes.
"Damn right I did."
With his thumbs, he wiped away her tears  then took his time admiring her. Every detail of her face and entire being.
Elvis kept singing, and they kept swaying.
*
Emergency mission. Get your asses back to the compound.
The lovely message which pulled both Iris and Sam out of their post coital slumber and forced them to go back to the Avengers headquarters as quick as possible.
Once they arrived, they only had time to make their respective protein shakes as breakfast before Director Fury called them in the conference space. Everyone else was already sat, waiting for Nick to speak up.
"I need you guys sharp on this one. We got the info a few days ago but there was a piece of intel missing from the brief, which I needed to give you guys the green light."
Nick pressed a button and an image appeared on the large touchscreen. Shock took place on some faces, pain on others.
"Oh my God."
"She's alive?!"
"Where is she?"
"For those of you who don't know, this is my second child, and Iris' twin sister."
Eyes still slightly wide, they all stared at Iris' identical twin. They had the same features. While Iris' face was free of scars, Dahlia had a large scar across the face, from the tail of her right eyebrow through the right corner of her mouth, ending at the chin.
"Steve," Iris called.
The super soldier snapped out of his thoughts, tearing his gaze off his ex-lover's face.
"Are you okay?"
"Yeah. Fine."
"Dahlia —"
"What is it with you and flowers?" Wanda asked, genuinely curious.
Nick pinched the bridge of his nose, already annoyed by the wave of questions that was about to submerge him.
"That would be a question for their mother, a question that I, too, would like an answer to."
"Oh, dad, please! You called us Nicky and Nicolette, so I think you can save your rant on names for later," Iris rolled her eyes.
"Wait," Sam interrupted Nick just as he opened his mouth to speak. "I gotta ask, which one's Nicolette?"
Iris narrowed her eyes at him.
"That would be our dear Iris," Tony said.
A stiffled laugh came from the back of the room where Bucky sat, pinching his nose to contain his giggles. Iris raised a brow.
"What you laughing at Buchanan?"
Bucky snapped his mouth shut in a thin line.
"This is a matter of worldwide security, so I'm gonna need you to stop behaving like goddamn children," Nick scolded, giving a pointed look to his daughter. "Dahlia is a compromised former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent. She'd joined the ranks of HYDRA long before S.H.I.E.L.D. fell. She's a traitor, that is why you've never heard of her."
"I've seen her before," Wanda's voice was almost a whisper. "With Strucker, during our... experiments."
"But... we saw her in her cell in the Raft. Then she died of a seizure," Natasha said matter-of-factly.
"She escaped a few months ago."
"Told you I should've brought her to Asgard," Thor mumbled.
"A few months ago?!" Iris repeated in disbelief. "Dad, why didn't you say anything?"
"She was invisible to our radars until now. With what remained of the Insight protocols and Stark's tech, we were able to find her only a few days ago."
"Tony, you knew about this?" Steve, who still hadn't said anything until that moment, turned to Tony, lines creasing in his forehead.
"Sorry, Cap. Fury made me swear not to say anything."
"Dad... What's the mission?"
"Dahlia was seen at a facility located on the border between Ukraine and Russia," as Nick spoke, images appeared on the touchscreen next to him. "Packages were sent from this facility to Iraq and Syria. We have reasons to believe that weapons are curated in this facility, using the remains of the Ultron disaster and sent to the Middle East."
"But it's been years since Ultron happened," Clint chipped in. "How could she possibly still have access to Stark tech?"
"Veronica," Bruce blurted. "Veronica and the other satellites. What if she's using Veronica and the drones from the satellites we don't use anymore to create weapons?"
"But how?" Rhodey asked.
"Dahlia's access to all those things was revoked after she got in the Raft, but what if she's using Iris? The older satellites don't require a retinal scan to work, but they do have the same voice."
"Jesus Christ," Iris burried her face in her hands. "Dad. What's the mission?"
"Destroy Dahlia's facility, locate the weapons in the Middle East, get rid of them... Neutralise Dahlia Fury."
"Dad—"
"Two teams. Colonel Rhodes, Barton, Maximoff, Barnes and Romanoff as air support in the Middle East. The rest, in the Ukraine. We don't know how many men exactly but based on our sightings, more than Strucker had in Sokovia. You leave tonight."
Steve immediately walked out of the room, hands balled up in fists, jaw and shoulders tense. The rest of the team did the same, one by one.
"What's his deal?" Sam asked Iris in a hushed tone.
"Him and my sister... They were together. Their relationship was as serious as could be. We never knew what happened to Dahlia, you know? Maybe she was brainwashed, kind of like Bucky, but she still knows who we are... When she was sent to the Raft, Steve was inconsolable, first he hurt her, then he lost her..."
"What? The—" Sam gestured across his face. "He did that to her?"
Iris nodded. "He didn't mean to. The shield bounced off someone and she was in the way. He was furious with himself."
"How about you, baby?" he squeezed her hand. "You okay?"
"To be honest, my dad and I never believed she'd died. Something was off in her death certificate, but we still grieved and moved on, you know," she sighed. "I've got to check on my dad, okay? I'll talk to you later."
She gave him a peck on the lips before strolling down the hall to find Nick.
Iris felt like a building had fallen on top of her. Her heart was already troubled, tugging on two different sides, and now her twin sister, who was supposed to be nothing but ashes in the Atlantic ocean, was a terrorist and very much alive.
In her hand, her phone started to ring, the screen lighting up to display a photo of her fiancé holding their daughter, both smiling at the camera.

An O.C. for Your Asses!!!
I wanna see if the characters are legit before I move forward with this short story im working on (I'm a character first kinda guy, so I work inside-out) leave any form of constructive critique you wish, they are still works in progress, thanks!!
Augustine Harriet Andersson
Age:22
Sign: Gemini (sun) Cancer (moon) Virgo (rising)
Height: 5'8
Eye Color: Formerly dark-brown, bleached to a pastel-hazel because of some dark magic fuckery
Hair Color/Cut: dark-brown,q shifting variations of a fade, whose design changes somewhat based on his thoughts and emotions (yes, this is an enchanted fade)
Build: lean, lightly muscled from years lifting cauldrons in his grandfather's potion shop
Notable Features: Dimples; left-dimple is deeper than right, multiple piercings on each ear, artificial left eye (looks organic but to magical eyes, it looks otherwise)
"Have you ever been like...fundamentally angry? I feel that way...like at my core, there's this rage that seethes and coils at the pit of my stomach, everyday, like a python that can't quite squeeze his prey all the way to death. Everytime I think I've grown up, forgiven something or someone or myself, there's this anger that tightens right back up all over again...like it's reminding me of something. Somedays...I feel like that feeling will petrify everything I've ever loved about myself, and I'll just be another slave to outrage and ego and pain...just like everyone else...haha, then I'll really be a normie."  -August Andersson, on his depression and internal anger issues.
Augustine Andersson is a witch-boy. But you could probably already tell that from looking at him: the way his eyes are almost constantly fixed towards some unseeable infinity, the way air molecules hum with fresh, manic energy around him, how he seems to absorb sunlight and the way his brown skin would filter the glow as a result of his connection to the natural...it was all very off putting to others around him for most of his young adult life. And as we all know, no one likes a freak, so such years had a hand in building his current trust issues, feelings of great anger and inadequacy, and all the tics and tricks he uses to keep such feelings at bay. He's not at a total loss; at his core he is a humanitarian, deeply compassionate and available to those who have managed to capture his heart, as well as wild and humorous. However, he keeps a tight lid on his darkest feelings and insecurities, out of fear that they may be too much for those around him (also, he might accidentally call forth a vile arch-daemon on accident, but that's neither here nor there.) After finally having had enough of his mundane time amongst the humans, he vanishes from his college campus one day and takes to the open road, hoping that like the many young, angsty teens in the movies he loves, he will find himself in his own solitude. But the best way to deal with oneself is when confronting someone else, and after a close-call with a reckless (and very cute) motorcycle rider on an interstate, August will be forced to deal with every single part of himself, the good, the bad, and the strange...
A few more things about him...
1. His father is Afro-swedish, hence his last name.
2. Loves to travel and is nomadic by nature.
3. He gets a special kind of warmth out of being moderately petty at all times.
4. He loves open spaces and bodies of water, as well as hikes through mountains (ok so he only went once in Vegas, so sue him, he really liked it!)
5. Surprisingly low maintenance, really just likes being around people that are happy, and the feeling easily rubs off on him.
6. Both positive and negative emotions easily rub off on him.
7. Can get caught up in moments of warm content, given his unstable interior life, and can get lost in wasting/spending time.
8. Gets restless easily.
9. Budding film buff, faves include Kill Bill vol. 1&2, Her, Moonrise Kingdom, Gone Girl, Blue is the Warmest Color, Moonlight, & Mean Girls.
10. August's father is very engaged with politics and civil rights, so in honor of that, he decided that his son's middle name would belong to one of the greatest figures of the civil rights movement: Harriet Tubman.
11. Favorite new movie is The Favourite.
12. Due to a lack of acceptance of his full self and the full spectrum of his sexuality, he is judgemental of others and holds them to the same near-impossible standards he holds for himself.
13. Things he expects from others: To read his mind and conjure what he wants without saying, to have his needs and boundaries respected without actually stating so, for others to fit in whatever box he thinks they should be in, for everyone's intellect to be slightly lower than his own, but high enough not to annoy him with silly questions, ect.
14. Listens to Lorde, J. Cole, Rex Orange County, Frank Ocean, Lana Del Rey, Tyler the Creator, Young Thug and assorted film soundtracks.
15. Enjoys playing into his double-sided nature when it suits him, and has a secret glee in melding into different roles depending on who's around him.
16. Is attracted to more eccentric personalities in platonic and romantic relationships
17. Smokes weed to escape boredom. (and his problems)
18. Smokes weed because he likes the feeling.
19. Is secretly a little ratchet, but he'll kill you if you say so, it'll fuck up his reputation as the quasi-sociopathic erudite.
Magic House-Thoth
Augustine is a member of the Sacred House of Life, witches whose magic is passed down from the Egyptian Gods themselves. August himself is a descendant of an African slave-witch, once known as Ashe. She was taken to Egypt as a typical piece of cargo from zealot raiders, and was sentenced to a life of building the pyramids. Or so she would have thought: Thoth, the God of Magic and Knowledge, took pity upon her and beguiled her to follow an invisible force into the desert one night. He then revealed himself to her in his ibis-headed brilliance and bestowed upon her a set of choices: he could free her now and set her loose across the desert with all the things she would need for survival, or he could give her secrets and wisdoms unknown to man at the time, but she would have to frequently return to him for lessons. Ashe always prized knowledge and growth over any material thing, or even something such as freedom (I prefer to disagree myself). And secrets from a God must count for that much more, right? She indulged in option two. Thoth grinned and whispered to her the mysteries of life, the secrets of the stars, and the riddles of worlds lost and intangible, he spoke magick into her very soul. She would then use her newfound knowledge to fool her captors, freed any slave that would believe in her, and with her wits about them, guided them across the desert to build a library-like sanctuary, in honor of Thoth. The former slaves then learned from the god's teachings, passed through Ashe, and became witches and educators in their own right, and Ashe came to lead this new coven of magi. This is how the House of Thoth became to be.
Magick: As a member of house of Thoth, August has the ability to manipulate various aspects of the moon, writing, hieroglyphics, knowledge and sciences, and the progression of time. His particular specialty is the creation of Moon Dust, a substance used as a medium for most of his spells. By gathering various quantities of mineral, be it: crystal, rocks, pearls, aluminum, or even silvers and golds, he can channel his magic into them and break down and rearrange their atomic components into a corrosive, abrasive substance that also tends to stick to objects due to an electric charge. This dust is also dangerous to breathe in. He tends to carry around a pouch or two on his person, as trying to create some on the fly is nearly impossible given how much time and intricacy is needed to create the substance. (I mean, working with just a pile of plain old rocks would take a couple of hours to convert, let alone harder or more distilled substances.) Spells that he has mastered so far include...
Spell of Refraction: A spell in which the moondust bonds to whomever or whatever August desires (sans the harmful effects, it's enchanted in this state) and whatever is enveloped in dust turns invisible via light refraction.
Spell of Revelations: He can spread his moondust over an area and have the pieces cling to imprints of negative emotion or dark magick. A spell used for forensic work.
Spell of Retribution: An offensive spell that uses moondust to its fullest offensive powers and creates small funnels of dust to ravage the opponent. The largest funnel made could surround a fully grown man.
Golemancy:  Can create golems out of the moon dust he has formed, usually no larger than a human toddler. They tend to take form roughly resembling lego-men (he was a big fan of the Lego Expanded Universe as a child), but one can easily be fooled by their size: each golem has the strength of three men, and can combine to further power themselves up.
There are a few spells that don't require the moon dust...
-The Veil: A surface-level illusion layered directly over the skin. This allows the caster to look like whatever he wants to look like and sound however he wants, but can be broken if struck with bad intentions (like a slap from an offended woman on the street)
-Somnus: A very old, yet practical spell. Also one that does not require moondust, this handy spell induces sleep.  Those affected by this spell will not remember being forced to sleep, but they will have active and vivid dreams for distraction. Also necessary for Dream Diving.
-Dream Diving:  A skill Augustine has yet to master, this allows the caster to astral project into one's consciousness for complete access to the afflicted parties mind, if the brain is distracted by dreams. August has gotten stuck in several public nude dreams, and it takes long hours to remove oneself from another's mind.
-Illusion Casting
-Temporary Madness Inducement
-Script Magick: By writing down a word or phrase on any surface that can be sufficiently marked on, whatever has been written manifests somehow, just so long as it is within his power. He can't create miracles with it though.
Top 10 Roadtrip Songs

No Role Moldelz-J. Cole

For our second interview we got the chance to speak with the amazingly talented, eloquent and powerful writer, Furqan! She is a creative writer who focuses on social justice, politics and feminism. Furqan is located in Canada and we are very honored to get to interview her! 1. What’s your favourite book? This is quite possibly the most difficult question ever. But it’d have to a tie between The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison and White Teeth by Zadie Smith 2. What is a book you’re currently reading ? How We Get Free by Keeanga Yamahtta Taylor 3. How old were you when you first started taking writing seriously as a creative thing?? I’ve been writing ever since I honestly can remember, entering writing contests, participating in school competitions, and what not. Social justice issues were my favourite thing to write about as a kid. I think I started taking writing creatively as a serious thing when I was about 12 years old. Writing about everything sweatshops in Bangladesh to racial profiling, I thought I was going to save the world. 4. What type of writing do you do? Poetry and prose + opinion/analysis pieces. Social commentary on political happenings have also been my favourite to write. 5. Who inspires you ? Nuruddin Farah, Ta Nehisi Coats, Roxane Gay 6. What’s your advice when it comes to writing a book or a blog ? Comparing yourself to other writers with their book/blog is useless- writing comes from a certain vantage point, and you don’t share vantage points with others! it’ll be difficult, but in the end you’ll be proud of what you wrote because it came from you. take it slow! set aside time in your day to write. make a commitment to complete a certain amount everyday, and before ya know it- whatever you were working on is on its way to go! 7. what do you write about? Politics, social issues, feminism, culture 8. What do you hope to learn in terms of writing/blogging? How to further my thoughts, and not water myself down. Also, paying attention to healthy discourse. (Ex. Different 👏🏽 Somali 👏🏽 Writers 👏🏽 Won’t 👏🏽 See 👏🏽 Things 👏🏽 The 👏🏽 Same 👏🏽 Way). White writers are very much allow to differ in opinion. Expecting every Somali blogger, or opinion writer to see every situation is not only inherently wrong but a disservice to intellectual conversation. 9. How do you learn from criticisms ? Not everyone is going to digest what you write easily, so taking in criticism is important to me. I do so by reminding myself that 1) it’s (usually!!) not personal, and 2) there’s always room to grow! having someone critique your work allows for your writing to reach places that weren’t possible before because your perspective is only so wide. 10. Any advice for writers who want to start? feel free to refer to my answer for 6!! this, of course, depends on what your style of writing is. + one thing my father really ingrained in my head when I was little was that “no one is in my brain”. You are the only person who knows what your thinking, your job as a writer is to invite people in there. expand your sentences! don’t be afraid to lay everything on a page! be clever, let your personality shine through. 11. Describe your writing journey in three words? So Many Adjectives 12. Do you carry a journal with you ? To put your ideas in? I quite literally will write on anything if and when inspiration strikes. On a napkin, stray paper, my hand (yikes I know). Thank the Lord for the note app on my phone. I do have journals, and a few smaller notebooks to store my ideas in. 13. Anything else you’d love to say? There is a true need for fresh perspectives and analysis from groups, especially in this climate of selective outrage and occasional censorship. Words are incredibly powerful, and I’m grateful for the little space I take up on the Internet. ____________________________________________ Here are some links to her work https://seafoaming.com/2018/03/08/reverse-racism/ https://www.amaliah.com/post/41577/white-privilege-works-way-school-shootings And a collection of her work with Teeneye Magazine http://www.teeneyemagazine.com/search?q=Furqan%20Mohamed&f_collectionId=5583952be4b08f78c1dda44d ____________________________________________ Follow her social Insta and Twitter- @HeyFurqan

ASK ME QUESTIONS!?: 4, 6, 8, 24, 54, 88, 89, 91. HAPPY ASK LIST: Pink, Journal, Waves, Waterfalls. OCEAN ASK: Sails, Shells, Waves, Seafoam, Sea Glass, Nymph, Shipwreck. DEEP GET TO KNOW YOU QUESTIONS: 2, 8, 9, 13, 18. ASK ME SOME STUFF: 2, 12, 21, 24, 36. GET TO KNOW THE BLOGGER: 6, 8, 9, 12, 15, 18, 47, 49, 51, 57, 59, 65, 98, 144. Hopefully these will keep you busy :)
ASK ME SOME QUESTIONS!? -4: What's something you really want right now? - To be completely done with university and to have a stable job.6: Do you like the beach? - Honestly, I haven't spent enough time on beaches to really have an opinion. I like being by the seaside but not necessarily on the beach.8: What's the background of your cell? - The home screen is a sketch of autumn leaves and the lock screen is a small cassette tape that says 'for Will' with 'should I stay or should I go' written above/below it. (I'm so excited for Stranger Things season2!)24: Is there a certain quote you live by? - I don't necessarily live by it, but I like the quote from John Lennon about when he grows up he wants to be happy. Because that's what I want, I don't care what I'm doing as long as I'm happy.54: What was the last beverage you spilled on yourself? - It was only last night, and it was water. I'd filled my water bottle up too much.88: If someone gave you $1,000 to burn a butterfly over a candle, would you? - Well they'd have to force me to hold the butterfly first, but once they have then yeah, I probably would. It sounds mean and I wouldn't hurt a person for it. But I could do so much with that money, and it's only one small butterfly.89: What is something you wish you had more of? - Confidence. I'm a shy and nervous person. I go red when talking to new people, I shake more than usual, I go quiet, my heart beats super fast and I feel like I'm perspiring way more than I am. I get embarrassed easily too. It's taken me up to now to sing in front of my family when a song I like is on the radio. 91: Do you sleep with your window open? - In the summer I sleep with my window on the latch so it's cracked open a little to let fresh air in. Other than that I don't open it. HAPPY ASK LIST - Pink: Sunsets or sunrises - I'm not a morning person so definitely not sunrises. I like sunsets when the sky turns a mix of oranges, pinks and purples. It's beautiful.Journal: Would you dye your hair if you had the opportunity? Why or why not? - I would, I would like to try something new but I don't know what colour I would choose (except orange, never again!).Waves: Is there one music genre you can't listen to? Country... I do have several songs that's can be considered country/folksy but as a genre it's not so great. Jazz and classical are iffy too, some songs are really good but if I was forced to listen to them for the rest of my life I'd probably go insane. Waterfalls: Describe your perfect date? - Disclaimer,I've never been on a date so this is purely what I'd like: comfy on the couch watching favourite tv series or films with take out. Or long drives to no where in particular with favourite music playing. OCEAN ASK -Sails: Describe your perfect partner? - So for starters I don't have a type. All the crushes I've had vary. But the person does need to be kind and not afraid of their emotions. Political views must be similar to my own. If the person is sexist, racist, homophobic or discriminatory or anyone LGBTQ+ then they definitely don't have a chance.Shells: Would you prefer to be a vampire or a werewolf? - A vampire. I can stay young forever and I don't have to worry about what I look like.Waves: Favourite season and why? - Spring! It's not too warm and it's not too cold. Flowers start blossoming then too and they have me happy.Seafoam: Describe your ideal summer vacation? - So this summer I went on a road trip, of sorts, around Scotland and I loved it. I'd like to do that again around lots of countries in the world.Sea Glass: What do you consider to be your best physical feature? - My eyes? I like the colour of my eyes and my eye lashes are pretty long so I think they look nice. The rest of me isn't too fantastic.Nymph: Old-fashioned or modern decor? - How old are we talking? Because if it's 1920s Art Deco then definitely old-fashioned. Shipwreck: I don't have an OC. I'd like to try and write something but I'm not a very creative person so I don't know where I'd start.DEEP GET TO KNOW YOU QUESTIONS -2: Are you religious? If yes, what is your religion? - Technically, I'm christened Catholic and I was brought up in Roman Catholic/Catholic school but at the age of 7 I lost someone very close to me and from then on I've firmly atheist. But I can understand why people are religious.8: Do you believe in second chances? - I do depending on what has first happened. Say someone has killed in self defence, then they should get a second chance. But if the person has killed purely for no reason at all, then they should not get a second chance. 9: What is one thing that people always misunderstand about you? - That I'm always in a mood because I have a resting bitch face. If you see me and I look pissed, chances are I'm not.13: Does the most important person in you life know how much they mean to you? - I'd hope so.18: What would you do differently if you knew no one would judge you? - I'd sing along when songs I like came on the radio/iPod and maybe dance a little too (again, it's an anxiety thing).ASK ME SOME STUFF -2: What would you name your future kids? - For a boy I like the names Jonah and Adam. For a girl I'm not too sure.12: What is something you want right now? - To be in Edinburgh already! (By the time you read this I'll probably be there, but right now I'm still 2 hours out).21: Age and birthday? - My birthday is 12th March 1998, I'm 19 years old.24: Height? - I'm 5'3" (I don't know what that is in meters)36: 3 dreams you want to fulfill? - I want to graduate university, I want to have a good job, and I want to have a happy life.GET TO KNOW THE BLOGGER -6: What fictional place would you like to visit? - Probably Westeros because most other fictional stuff I like is set in real places (but life before Game of Thrones started because there are a few characters I'd like to save).8: When was the last time you climbed a tree? - Last time was probably when I was 12/13.9: If you could turn any activity into an Olympic sport, What would you have a good chance of winning a model for? - Sleeping, or sleeping in. I can sleep almost anywhere, and I'm great at not getting up early if I don't have to. And I don't mean like sleeping in till 9/10am, I'm talking noon/1pm/2pm.12: What skill would you like to master? - Playing the guitar? Or just talking to people without having mini panic attacks.15: What's your favourite drink? - A drink that comes from Scotland called Irn Bru. I also really love Vanilla Coke/Pepsi! 18: What game or movie universe would you like to live in? - I would like to live in either the Star Trek or Star Wars universe.47: What is the most annoying question people ask you? - This is going to sound stupid but its 'Is (insert film title here) out on the internet yet?'. My parents ask me this all the time, and it's always for movies they know either aren't out or have only just been released at the cinemas. And they know that there's a very slim chance a good copy will be on the internet. 49: If you were the dictator on a small island nation, what crazy dictator stuff would you do? - I don't know if I'd do anything crazy because I'm a pretty fair person. But I'd have a certain laws in place: don't litter, don't spit on the ground, if you're racist/sexist/etc then you will be kicked off the island.51: Would you rather go hand gliding or whitewater rafting? - Well, I'm afraid of heights and I can't swim. But I think I'll chose hand gliding because I've heard that drowning isn't very nice, and if I fall to my death it'll be over quicker.57: What's something you've been meaning to try but haven't got around to it? - Root beer! A certain supermarket near me sells it along with lots of other tasty looking American snacks/drinks and I really want some but I keep forgetting. Also, beef jerky...59: What piece of entertainment do you wish you could erase from your mind, only to experience it for the first time again? - There's A couple things. There's the first time I saw a Star Wars movie in a cinema, the first time I watched Band of Brothers and Generation Kill, and my first run though of Uncharted: Lost Legacy and Watchdogs 2. I'd love to experience them all for the first time again. 65: What fad or trend do you think should come back? - All the fads and trends that come to mind are awful (flares and platform boots being a couple) but I really like the fashion from the 1950s/1960s. I think we should bring it back. 98: What's the dumbest thing you've done that actually turned out well? - I've done a lot of dumb things but none of them have turned out well. 144: Why would you be annoying as a roommate? - If I don't really know the other person/people, then I'm really quiet and awkward. But if I do know the other people then I don't think I'd be annoying.Thank you for the asks!! :) It kept be very busy! (I'm sorry if you can't read this properly, I can't bold or anything -_-)

HOW TO SPEND THREE PERFECT DAYS IN ATHENS
I’m obsessed with Greece.
From the moment I stepped foot in this beautiful country, it was love at first mouthful. There’s something about Greece feels so healing. Being there calms my overactive mind, soothes my worries, and leaves me feeling healthier and stronger than ever. And the food? I’ve been to over 90 countries and Greece is my number one destination for eating.
I believe Athens is one of the greatest European cities out there, and it’s the perfect destination for a city break. This city is magnificent! With great street art, incredible food, colourful neighbourhoods, and so much history, there really is something for everybody.
I think three days is the perfect amount of time to spend in Athens, so today, I’m excited to share exactly how you can do so.
DAY ONE: BEGIN DIVING INTO ATHEN’S HISTORY
The first thing you should do in Athens is a no-brainer: buy your combined ticket.
What’s that?
Well, it costs €30, and for that, you’ll gain access to all of the main attractions in Athens, including the Acropolis. Not only will you get to explore the most famous site in the city, but you’ll also be able to enter the Ancient Agora, Roman Agora, Hadrian’s Library, Aristotle’s School, Kerameikos, and the Olympieion — you can visit each of these once over a five-day period, and you can buy the ticket at the entrance to any of them. I bought mine from the Ancient Agora. You’ll save a whole bunch of money by doing this, so the only reason not to get the combined ticket is if you think you’ll only want to see one or two of the attractions.
As we were serenaded by the screeching sounds of a teenager learning to play Despacito on his accordion, we queued up at the Ancient Agora to buy our ticket.
The Ancient Agora was built in the 6th Century BC and was once the centre of life in ancient Athens. Used as a marketplace and gathering spot, this was where you’d have found people like Socrates, Aristotle and Plato casually wandering around town. Almost all of the commercial, political, and social activity took place in the ancient Agora, so this is a hugely important area to check out.
We kicked off our explorations with a wander around the Temple of Hephaestus, which is the best-preserved temple in Athens. And it sure was impressive when you consider that it was built in 415 BC — it was in great condition, as you can see from my photo above.
The views were pretty acceptable, too.
Aside from the Temple of Hephaestus, the Ancient Agora is also home to your standard ruin remnants: collections of rocks, stumps, and fallen-down walls, hinting at the temples and stalls that would have once stood here. But, as always with ruins, you’ll have to use your imagination, because it is still a pile of rocks on the ground.
There’s the Stoa of Attalos here, too — built in the 2nd Century BC, although since reconstructed — which currently acts as a museum for the Ancient Agora. And the Byzantine Church of the Holy Apostles, which was built in 1000 AD, is one of the few structures in the Agora that’s still standing.
Before arriving in Athens, I kind of assumed it would feel like a poor man’s Rome, but at this point, I was well and truly eating my words. Athens was pretty goddamn awe-inspiring.
Next, you’ll want to make your way over to the Kerameikos Cemetary, which is another site that’s included in your combo pass. This spot was one of the most important regions of ancient Athens. Once used as a neighbourhood for pottery and painters, it was the place where those famous Athenian vases were produced.
It was later transformed into a cemetery: one of Athen’s most important.
As you walk around the site, you’ll also be able to spot pieces of the Themistoclean Wall, which was built in 478 BC to protect the city from the Spartans.
I’m convinced that it’s impossible to have a bad meal in Greece: their cuisine is too delicious to mess up. I’ve yet to have a meal that wasn’t excellent in this country, whether I’ve been sat beside a congested motorway in the middle of nowhere, snacking at a taverna on a yacht in the Ionian, or dining in the most touristy parts of Athens.
The latter was exactly what we opted for at lunchtime, and it should have been terrible.
I settled on the most touristy restaurant on the most touristy of streets, with touts outside, and a menu in English with photos of the dishes. What can I say? We were starving by this point, so decided to give in and eat an overpriced, poor meal.
Except it was amazing! Because Greece.
While I wouldn’t necessarily recommend heading to a touristy restaurant for any of your meals in Athens, I suspect you won’t be all that disappointed if you do end up there. Eat anywhere in Athens! It’s always going to be delicious.
With stomachs satisfied by kebabs, we set off to hit up the second Agora in Athens. The Roman Agora was built in the 1st century BC, financed by Caesar and Augustus, and like the ancient Agora, was used as the city’s marketplace. You enter the site through the Gate of Athena Archegetis, which was built by Julius Caesar and dedicated to the goddess Athena.
The most well-known and well-preserved building is the Tower of the Winds: a large octagonal marble tower that functions as a sundial, weathervane, and water clock. It’s believed to be the first meteorological station in the world, and worth having a look inside.
One of my favourite neighbourhoods in Athens was Plaka, so you’re going to want to head there after the Roman Agora. If you’ve been to Athens before, you’re probably not surprised to hear Plaka was one of my highlights — everybody who visits this city falls in love with this neighbourhood! You could spend hours wandering around its photogenic streets.
Plaka is all about clean colourful streets, bustling cafes, and amazing places to eat. It’s popular with visitors, but busy for a reason, and I still loved spending an afternoon cafe-hopping through the picturesque streets and taking photos of all of the colours.
While you’re in Plaka, you have to check out Anafiotika’s white-washed buildings and narrow streets for an insight into what Greek island life is like. The buildings look a lot like what you’ll find on Santorini.
Grab dinner in Plaka or in a restaurant overlooking the Acropolis. You’ll have an early start tomorrow, so you’ll want to get an early night.
DAY TWO: ALL ACROPOLIS, ALL THE TIME
Against popular belief, I highly recommend saving the Acropolis for your second day in Athens. As tempting as it is to head straight to the most iconic building in the city, there’s several reasons why you should hold off until later.
Sunrise is the absolute best time to see the ruins, and who wants to spend their first day in a new city waking up at 6 a.m.? Not me! On top of that, the Acropolis is going to make every other site in Athens pale in comparison, so I recommend not hitting it up on your first day.
We got to the southeast gate at 7.30 a.m., half an hour before it opened at 8, and this turned out to be the best decision we could have made. When the gate opened, we rushed past everyone else, ignored every ruin and attraction near the entrance, and focused solely on racing up the hill.
Our determination paid off because we had the entire complex to ourselves for a solid five minutes. In this age of overtourism, getting to marvel over the Acropolis with nobody else around felt magical.
Below is what the entrance to the Acropolis looked like when we reached the top, with just Dave in the photo, and below that is what it was like half an hour later. Yes. Half. an. hour. later. It was unbelievable how many people ascended the hill in such a short period of time.
In short: the southeast gate at 7:30 a.m. — it’ll allow you to see the site without anybody else around.
Yikes.
I recommend avoiding the main gate in favour of the southeastern gate, which is close to the Acropolis Museum. Queues will be much smaller at the southeast gate, so you’ll be able to make your way to the top of the hill before everyone else.
When you reach the Acropolis, snap a couple of photos then take a moment to appreciate what you’re witnessing, rather than checking it out from behind a camera.
Several minutes later, it’s time to start bracing yourself for crowds.
The Acropolis is the name given to the complex on top of the hill, and it’s made up of several individual buildings.
There’s the Temple of Athena Nike, the iconic Parthenon, the Old Temple of Athena, the Legendary Olive Tree of the Pandroseion, the Porch of the Caryatids at the Erechtheion… and on your way down, the Odeon of Herodes Atticus.
Oh, and while you’re exploring all of the monuments on top of the hill, make sure to wander off to the sides to snap a photo of Athens from above. They ended up being some of my favourite photos from my time there.
Something that sounds boring but isn’t is the Acropolis Museum, and I recommend spending a couple of hours there.
As someone who identifies as a museum-avoider, I listened to the recommendations of everyone who had been (they insisted I go inside!), and made myself check it out. And I loved it. The museum houses tons of sculptures unearthed from the Acropolis and it was fascinating to check them out.
You’ll also get to learn about how my country took the Parthenon Marbles, plopped them in the British Museum, and refuses to give them back to Greece. Awkward.
Head to Syntagma Square next to watch the changing of the guard. This takes place every hour on the hour, so attempt to time your visit perfectly. The guards wear fun outfits, march around in unison, and generally make for interesting photos.
From Syntagma Square, wander over to the enormous National Archaeological Museum to get your history on. Again, I’m not a museum fan, but this one was seriously impressive and complements the ruin-themed explorations you’ve done so far.
When you emerge from the museum, you’ll be in the achingly cool Exarchia neighbourhood, where I chose to base myself in Athens. And I loved this neighbourhood. Even if you’re not staying there, it’s well-worth a wander and meal in the evening. So many great restaurants and bars! I especially recommend Atitamos for Cretan food and Giantes for excellent meals all round. I ate at both multiples times while I was in the city.
DAY THREE: EVERYTHING ELSE
We’ll keep this day more chilled out and spend most of the day crossing off the final remaining attractions on your combined pass. By this point, you’ve visited the Acropolis, checked out the Ancient and Roman Agoras, and still have a handful of attractions to explore. Fortunately, unless you’re huge on ruins, these can all be seen fairly quickly.
Start your day by heading to Monastiraki for some ruins, architecture, and shopping. If you’re looking to stock up on tat souvenirs, this is the place to come. Opposite the Monastiraki metro station, you’ll find Hadrian’s Library and the Tzistarakis mosque — the former was built in 132 AD by Emperor Hadrian, and was the largest library of Athens. Today, it’s little more than a handful of columns, but you get free entry with your combo ticket, so it’s worth a wander around.
Beside the library is the mosque, which was built during Athens’ Ottoman rule.
Next, head to Hadrian’s Gate for the picture-perfect photo of the Acropolis framed by the archway. I loved the photo I snapped of this view! Just beside the gate is the Temple of Olympian Zeus, one of the largest temples in ancient Greece. To give you an idea of its size, in my photo, you can see just 15 columns. When it was built, there were over a hundred.
From the temple, wander over to the Panathenaic Stadium to check out the world’s only stadium that’s built entirely of marble. Built in 330 BC, it was also home to the first modern Olympic Games, way back in 1896.
If you’re anything like me, you’re probably well and truly tired of staring at archaeological marvels, so grab a souvlaki from Monastiraki and head to the National Garden for a relaxing stroll and rest.
If you were to ask me which of the sites from the combined ticket aren’t worth it, I’d have to go for Aristotle’s Lyceum. The ruins are far from impressive, relative to everything else you can see in Athens. The only reason to go is to see somewhere of great historical significance. This the school Aristotle founded in 335 B.C. and later taught at, along with Isocrates, Plato, and Socrates.
These days, it’s simply a bunch of rocks on the ground, so you likely won’t spend too much time staring at them.
To round off your time in Athens, you’re going to want to head to Mount Lycabettus to get one of the best views over the entire city.
If you’re into walking, go for the hike to the top. It’ll take around 20 minutes, but the path is pretty steep. Otherwise, you can take a cable car or taxi to the top.
This is the perfect spot for sunset, looking down over the Acropolis and the sea.
And that’s how to spend three days in Athens!
WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU VISIT ATHENS
August is the worst time of year to visit: Sorry, but it’s true! Like much of Europe, Athens is at its worst in Europe. It’s overwhelmingly hot, crammed full of tourists and cruise ship passengers, and most of the locals have left in search of cooler climates. It’s not going to be a disaster if you do visit in August, but keep in mind that it’s going to get pretty uncomfortable as you explore those ruins in the heat.
I visited in mid-September and thoroughly enjoyed my time there. It wasn’t too hot, there were plenty of locals around, prices weren’t extortionate, and the masses of European tourism had dissipated for the start of school.
There’s Uber in Athens: That always makes getting around a less stressful experience! I used Uber to get from the airport to my hotel and from my hotel to the bus station when it came time to leave. No problems with either experience! There is a Greek equivalent called BEAT, which might be worth downloading before you arrive in the city. It has more drivers available than Uber, so if you plan on taxiing your way around town, could help save some time.
Sundays in the low season is where it’s at: Here’s a fun fact for you! On every Sunday, between 1st November and 31st March, all of the main attractions in the city (including the Acropolis!) are totally free to enter. If you’re down for some low season travel, that’ll save you a bunch of money.
Consider the metro: I really enjoyed using the metro in Athens! It was clean, easy to navigate, and cheaper than taking Ubers all over the city. A one-way ticket on the Athens public transport network costs €1.40 and allows you to use any method of transportation for 90 minutes. A day pass comes in at €4.50. The best value pass, however, is the €22 tourist pass. Valid for three days, it entitles you to unlimited travel around the city over that time, and includes a round trip to and from the airport. You can pick up your pass at the bus and metro ticketing area at the airport in the arrivals hall.
Traffic can be wild: I found the streets of Athens to be fairly chaotic for a European city, but it was nothing too outrageous. Just enough that I wouldn’t recommend renting a car while you’re in the city.
I felt safe in Athens: Athens has a bit of a sketchy reputation, but I found that to be outdated and false when I visited. I walked around on my own all the time in the city and never experienced any hassle or stress. Take the same precautions that you would at home and you’ll be fine.
Don’t forget travel insurance: And finally, I’m a firm believer that if you can’t afford travel insurance, you can’t afford to travel, and this holds true for every country in the world.
Travel insurance will cover your costs if your phone gets pickpocketed on the Athens metro, offer compensation if your flight gets cancelled, pay for you to replace your lost luggage, cover your medical bills if you get struck down with appendicitis, and ensure you don’t face any emergency travel costs to get back home for a family emergency. Nobody likes to think about things going wrong on their trips, but travel insurance is a must to ensure you’re not out thousands of dollars if the worst case scenario comes true.
I use and recommend World Nomads travel insurance for visitors to Athens. They’re a great company who have always been easy to contact whenever I’ve been facing difficulties on the road, have never given me any issues when making a claim, and I’ve been happily paying for their coverage for eight years of travel and counting.
I’ve had to make two separate claims with WorldNomads over that time — once when I dropped and smashed my new phone in Thailand (they covered the cost of repairs) and once when I crashed a rental car in New Zealand (they paid the $1,5000 damages, without me needing to pay any fees or excess!)
HAVE YOU BEEN TO ATHENS BEFORE?

Peter Liversidge - 1st Live Blog
I am writing this blog during the Peter Liversidge Exhibition Talk at PCA - 08/11/17
(This means that it will appear out of sync on the timeline of blogs, unless I can find another way to post this separately)
My expectations for this before it starts; after the Simon Morrisey (Curator) talk about the ‘We the People...’ exhibition, I am intrigued to see what it is that drives Peter not only for this work that he exhibited, but also in the other work that he has created.
Peter writes proposals for work on a typewriter - after graduating in 1996 computers were too expensive, so brought a Olivetti Lettera 35i - a portable aluminium bodied typewriter - sitting at his kitchen table writing proposals that then became the actual artwork.
Tumblr media
I love the idea of starting the process with something as tactile as a typewriter, the way the keys have a large depression, and the paper is left with a physical impression on the page along with the ink.
Proposals are eventually realised in different mediums later. The proposal is the work and isn't the work. Peter adds a lovely element to his work by trying to let it exist out of his control at as many stages as possible, from the people who frame his proposals, all the way to the way the audience engages in the work, takes it home or letting the conversations surrounding his work take place somewhere he never gets to hear them. This also allows the work to exist outside the gallery space it occupies as well.
All projects are published in an order as per the book that is created - for example - Proposal 15 “I propose we should all walk together.” - Thats it. This book determines the order they are also hung, the frame maker determines the pieces that are given coloured glass and it doesn't need to make sense.
Tumblr media
The work is how you read them, but sometimes they are very specific, for example, the Kate Mcgarry, Neon Face, 2017. Neon face is the least amount of effort to make a signifier, smiley face.
Tumblr media
Costa Coffee cup holder, titled ‘mask’ 2013, Black Bronze.
Its clearly not an african mask, but the black bronze finish is natural to Byzantine, coloured by being under the ground for hundreds of years. This cup holder is fake in all its representations as a mask. But yet looks like a mask.
Tumblr media
When at the Edinburgh Festival witnessed a lot of empty flag poles, liked the idea of placing something as menial as a ‘Hello’ on a flag, and it tells you nothing more, assumptions made and a feeling of secrecy ensues.
‘At this point and no other’ we are just seeing a photograph of the work, it is placed in Connecticut so we are not experiencing it, originated there and now in New York,
The importance of Context: with all of Peters work he drives down to the details of not only how he will create the work, but forming the idea is often the start of the experience for the audience as well. Where the work ends up is important, and this is shown with his sticker exhibition ‘Will History Be Kind, 2009′ - stickers that were printed and placed around Miami, New York and Kabul, Afghanistan.
Tumblr media
“History will be kind for I intend to write it” - heard this quote from Winston Churchill and felt that it was arrogant and so created the sticker ‘Will History Be Kind’ - its place in Miami takes on a different meaning to the placement in Kabul, Afghanistan.
Free Signs: when you drive past someones property and there is a sign that states ‘Free’ - the items with it are free, but Peter decided to take the sign instead, but then in doing so it meant that people who had stuff outside, could be prosecuted for fly tipping, so made signs to replace the ones he took.
Tumblr media
Text based work: Hello Sign that turns on when walking into a room. Thats all it is.
One of my favourite pieces from this talk was ‘The rules for Iceland’ - took a book from the Senate when in Washington and it was a list of rules for how you should act when visiting. Took this idea of taking rules from other places and combining them into a set of rules for somewhere entirely unrelated for where they were intended, textualising them into another environment. First one is you have to shower to enter a swimming pool, turned into ‘you have to shower before entering Iceland.’ One band had a rule about always dressing as a monk, no sharp objects is another one. 4000 posters were created and distributed all over the island - part of the experience, but completely made up. How people engage with the rules is completely out of Peters control.
Tumblr media
**realisation that I have been writing proposals in my notes for the last five years but never doing anything with them because I take them too literal.
Great story about fake snow in New York...creating fake snow for the opening night of a gallery, in the middle of summer, but had the unexpected outcome of news reporters, reporting on a crash down the road, wondering what this snow was that appeared in the middle of summer. Again, an unexpected twist that isn't intended, but can only happen if Peter creates work that is free to travel or be explored in any way.
Tang Museum in Saratoga - 2013: Blood bank setup by red cross where people just came in and gave blood. That was the exhibition. The people giving blood, participate in the work. More blood was given in 6 weeks than 6 months. This was just a way into the museum, but they got a copy of the proposal, which meant they received the work. I found that this resonated with me the most as I believe that it highlights how art can cross over from not only the artists idea to the audience being engaged, but can then go further by helping to address a need within society. Its a beautiful thought to have that someone has received blood that potentially saved there life, that was donated as part of an artists installation. For me this highlights that Art can perform multiple functions whilst still maintaining the original intention of being an experience of the artists creativity or artistic expression.
The Bridge: Opening of Turbine Hall, Tate Modern, 2016. 500 singers from 24 different choirs, all singing in unison, to test the acoustics. Met with the plasterers, electrician, curators, directors, staff canteen, met with everyone associated with the opening of the Tate. Even an elderly lady who had never visited before. Turbine Hall was formerly a power station. Lady who attended had a personal connection as husband had been an engineer at the power station and had died two years prior. The question raised was how does the work connect to the building, and vice versa. Had to test with singing into the wall - found out that there is a 7 second reverb from the wall in the main hall.
Tumblr media
Nutmeg Essence: found out that there was a history of people carving nutmeg, I believe he said in Massachusetts, so added nutmeg essence to the water that the fire brigade used when putting out fires, so for a 6 week period there was a smell of nutmeg in the air anytime they were called upon.
Postal Carrier, The Aldrich, CT: Scherrell Miller, postal worker - Making the Postal lady the curator and part of the exhibition. Posted objects from London to the Aldrich and the lady at the local post office would receive it and then hand deliver it to the gallery and place onto the shelf, the control is then out of his hands. Had actually posted a piece of toast to his cousin as an 11 year old. Funny how this has come back around in his work. Scherell totally owned this in the end displaying the work completely differently to how Peter would have done it.
Tumblr media
Anyone involved in Peters work is invited in advance. Interesting how this work becomes from the people, not professionals, and not about Peter or his ego.
Interesting that he took jobs when moving to London that he knew he didn't have to think in them, allowing him to work as an artist outside of it. This is what I have had to do by helping with carpentry. He had a sense of being an outsider as an artist - wondering is this good enough. The most important question is actually; why are you doing this?
He wants to be an outsider in his work and never wants to have a signature style, wanting to be as interested in his work as his audience will be. If others have to, he should too.
Plymouth work motivation:
1300 black sanitation workers - Glenn Ligon,
Tumblr media
Completely different way of working for Peter - taking place in the old Council house - Civic Centre, in Plymouth as Part of Simon Morriseys ‘We the People’ Exhibition. Book that had 750 phrases, public come in and choose a phrase to go onto a sign, it gets painted and then turned into a protest board, members of the public are then allowed to take it away - the work is now the conversation that is exchanged from this point on. This is the part that Peter is not even aware of, as people talk to themselves, or the sign painters talk amongst themselves, or painters talk to the public. Altogether the phrases come from primary school children to elderly people. A lot of people went through the book looking for political statements. When considering what people chose you wonder where does it live now. Has a degree of separation from the work, he cannot worry whether people take a sign or not. Favourite sign is ‘I like proper art’ - so relevant as piece within this exhibition.
Tumblr media
**Interesting moment when Peter passes his phone around in order for everyone to see a sign that was deleted. He gives out his passcode so people can see the photo.
I posed the question “does Peter think that there was a missed opportunity here to use this level of engagement to actually protest real current messages?”. His response is that he and I cannot be a voice on issues, it was placed into the public, it took place in the council house, it created engagement - he respects my opposing view, and I respect his open and honest answer - however - and I say this from a place less informed than Peter - do we not owe a debt to that child laid dying in the street in China to do what we can to help (this is a reference to Peter Singers Ted talk: The How and Why of Effective Altruism). Workers were paid to paint the signs, an old building gave space to the exhibition. Are we as a society given such privileges that we can look past moments to help in the name of ART - in believing that we have engaged people, have we engaged anything with consequence or meaning, influence or with the ability to affect change. I am trying to convince myself this summary speaks more to where my mind set lies at the start of this masters, and less of a reflection of this particular exhibition. Interestingly the defensive attitude of those who were part of the exhibition and not Peter himself, only confirmed my belief that this was a chance to attach some kind of call to action or message to the work, to utilise the engagement created. I will follow this up with a separate blog post outlining where my mindset is with this.
I found Peter engaging, his work inspirational, and approach both simplistic and steeped in depth. He certainly creates work that I look at and have every creatives worst nightmare of wishing I had thought of it.
Thank you Peter for an informative and motivational talk.
