anon i think you want to watch the world burn

disclaimer heads up once again that these are all 100% my personal feelings and not moral accusations of any kind, so if you happen to like this ship that’s your business and my opinion means nothing. that being said, fair warning, this isn’t going to be positive

so yeah i uh. intensely dislike this i’m not sure anyone’s surprised and there’s vaguely lore as to why that i’m not going to get into excessively, but the tldr of it is basically in two (ish) parts.

the first is that strictly coming at it from canon, independently of what your canon of choice is, this ship is wonky at best. and yes, i know, not everyone cares about that, and i’m not saying it’s completely impossible because AUs/canon divergences exist for a reason, but that’s point number one. i’m not even going to get into the fact that wang can, who’s very much a blip both in sha hai the book and sha hai the drama, di es in both which makes things even more impossible unless you redact that. then there’s simply the circumstances factor. the only way in which i could see this potentially being remotely possible in a canon setting is if you infer that liu sang’s association with tudian means that if tudian had extensive contact with the wangs, they might have crossed paths at some point. but given how little we know about tudian and his everything, it’s speculation, but it’s not impossible so there’s a window there i guess. and you’d also have to assume liu sang, who re: restart the book was born in the 90s, was born in the earlier half of the decade because otherwise he’d have been a bit young: not so much in general, because though that’s a topic for another discussion people do ship wu xie and li cu, more in relation to the popular fanon surrounding the liu sang/wang can ship which i’ll get to in a bit. as for how they’d work even if you filled in all those conditions? to be honest i’ve never thought about it extensively, but i don’t that we really get enough of wang can as a character to be able to pin him as more than a highly driven wang operative, and as for liu sang, given his general approach to most people and things, i can only really picture this in a ‘what if liu sang had been endoctrinated into the wangs’ AU because the way i see it, liu sang is someone who tends to be driven by the same sorts of intense/bordering on fanatical feelings in interpersonal relationships (re: how he is about xiaoge), so he and wang can would have to bond over their mutual devotion to the cause. again, not impossible, but you do need to get creative

this does bring me to the second part of the ‘why i want to burn this with fire’ lore, which is the fanon behind this ship even existing, and even that’s twofold. again, this is purely my personal feelings, but the biggest no-no for me from the get-go is this ship contains liu sang, and i do not like liu sang as a character. and yes it is practically entirely because of his fans but that’s also a topic for another time. unfortunately for similar reasons that also extends to most if not all characters who have been played by the same actor. so this ship is pretty much a double no-no for me for solely those reasons. then there’s the other aspect of the apparent appeal of it that specifically hinges on the fact both characters were played by the same actor, and so that i’ve seen, it’s a fairly popular take to make them both fanon long-lost twins. which then turns it into fanon incst and that’s just. really not my cup of tea. it’s just one of those things i let be but want to stay far away from, which makes it doubly unfortunate it’s another one of those ships i’ve had pushed at me directly or not before i distanced myself from most popular dmbj fandom spaces to avoid them

i wish i had more constructive things to say about this but unfortunately i don’t

@mimosaeyes , you asked about the Wizard!Liu Sang AU. It’s something of a fusion with Discworld that I was babbling to @tinbramble about a while ago. I don’t know that I’ll ever write this up fully, but here’s the opening.

He shows up at the orb center for his shift wondering, “What fresh hell is going to happen today?” He brings Luggage!Wang Can because he hasn’t walked him enough today (a late night dealing with a swamp creature rampaging because climate change made his swamp too salty means Liu Sang got to bed in the wee hours and slept in, only to wake up when the bed started shaking because Wang Can was slamming into it angrily).

It’s an afternoon/evening shift, like 3-11, and this one starts slow. A few people calling in because they got caught in a magical disturbance (it happens) and he dispatches some med-wizards to take care of it. But around 8:30 there’s a serious metallurgy accident that means all the qualified med-wizards are out when he gets the call. It is, of course, Wu Xie and Pangzi. They have, unsurprisingly, touched a Cursed Object. Again. Liu Sang runs through the usual checklist and, establishing that, yes, they do need assistance dealing with this, he leaves the orb center in the unsteady, barely capable hands of the apprentice Su Wan, and heads out with Wang Can. (This isn’t quite as bad as it seems since Su Wan is under standing orders from his mentor to contact him if things go tits up and Su Wan is smart enough to take that seriously.)

Pangzi didn’t seem to think that the situation was particularly urgent and they’re not actually that far away, so Liu Sang walks with WC over to the Doorways on Doncaster St, which will allow them to walk through the Space Bends and get to the… location… that Pangzi has specified. It’s in the Old City, which means money, and Liu Sang admits to himself he’s curious how they ended up someplace so fancy. Because these two have never struck him as particularly wealthy or well to-do, or even marginally successful at what they swear up and down isn’t grave robbing.

The walk takes a while which has the advantage of giving Wang Can a much-needed outlet for his pent-up energy. Liu Sang is cautiously optimistic that he’ll behave (as much as Wang Can ever behaves).

So they arrive and Liu Sang stares at the gates to the address he was given. It has A Name, which is a sign that at some point someone with quite a bit more magic than either Wu Xie or Pangzi seems to lived there. Wu Shan Ju, the sign says, and before Liu Sang uses the bell pull he gently lays his hand on the wood of the gate. It’s something he’s learned on his own, no one really teaches Wood Lore anymore, so thanks to Wang Can he’s had to become something of an expert. These doors are not quite the same feel as Wang Can, perhaps a different species of Sentient Heartwood, but he can feel their watchful presence. This old house definitely has Protections.

Wang Can bumps his shins impatiently, then brushes up against the doors. There’s a feeling of what Liu Sang reads as astonishment and then welcome from the doors. Wang Can gives a little purring sound, like a stick run over a wooden washboard. Liu Sang slowly draws back his hand and then catches the bell pull. Wang Can leans against a door while they wait for someone to come.

It's Pangzi who opens the gate, and Liu Sang runs his fingertips over the doors as he steps through, can sense the faintest of grumbles through the wood. Wang Can must catch it too, because as it follows him through, he rams Pangzi's shin with a little snarl.

"What the fuck!" Pangzi shouts, hopping up and down. There's a sense of faint faint laughter from the doors as they close and Wang Can is radiating Smug.

Liu Sang shrugs. "He does that. You said there's a problem?" He glances around for Wu Xie, who can usually be found close to his friend. He's nowhere to be seen this time, though, and it was Pangzi that orb'd him. "Where's the other idiot?"

Years back, Wang Meng had had to put up with an amnesiac Zhang Qiling identifying pretty nearly everything in Wushanjiu Antiques as fake. Even now he wasn't sure how anyone could just touch an object and know so much about it.

Now the man had shown up in the shop again. Worse, even worse, he'd come in with Wang Pangzi's new buddy, Liu Can.

And to make matters even more irritating, the pair of them decided to challenge each other's so-called skill, long fingers touching and touching and touching again.

Wang Meng's only solace was that Liu Sang - Liu Can's twin - didn't seem interested in touching anything and proclaiming every damned thing's provenance.

But that was when the skinny bastard brought out his whistle.

Liu Sang: the unchanging character

It’s been a while since I screamed about my blorbo, but I have been Having Thoughts lately about Liu Sang. Specifically about how one of the things I love best about his character arc over the course of Reunion is that Liu Sang doesn’t change; what changes is his and others’ perception of who he is.

I know I’ve said this before, but Liu Sang’s character introduction is an absolute masterclass in communicating SO MUCH INFORMATION about a new character in such a very short amount of time. In the course of less than 5 minutes, we learn that Liu Sang:

Is pretty (oh come on, like I wasn’t gonna lead with that)

Has a difficult reputation

Has a superpower

Is vulnerable/whumpable

Shows different private and professional faces

Will choose to intervene to save others

Will do so with no regard to his own safety

Is a bitch

Knows all the bad things that are said about him and chooses to lean into them

Has hints of a dark backstory

Has obsessive hero-worship tendencies

Did we mention Is a bitch?

Is very confident of his skills

Demands respect

Like, the only thing that could make this intro better would be if he got naked.

Oh, wait.

So, what makes that character introduction so relevant to my word-barf today? It tells us exactly who Liu Sang is. Everything that makes him up is laid out for the viewer in the first five minutes, but only for the viewer. It rapidly becomes clear that the characters in the story – including Liu Sang himself – have a very one-sided view of him. And we maintain that one-sided POV throughout what immediately follows; we see him being hyper-competent, we get further glimpses of his backstory, but he's also fan-creepy to Zhang QIling, a total jerk to Wu Xie about his illness, and revenge-pranks Pangzi in a way that nearly leads to his and Wu Xie’s death.

And what is so pleasing about Liu Sang’s story is that the tipping-point in this unreliable internal narrative occurs without any change from Liu Sang, before there is any change in perceptions. It occurs when Wu Xie dives back down to save Liu Sang.

Up to this point, despite what we as viewers know, for the other characters – and honestly for himself - Liu Sang has been a jerk. A competent jerk, but absolutely a jerk, and one whose actions nearly had deadly consequences. And that is who Wu Xie saves. Wu Xie – the boy who lost his innocence, the man who destroyed himself to tear down the Jiumen and the Wang and who has just learned how total that self-destruction will be, the man who has spent his life being betrayed and saved in equal measure – Wu Xie looks at this person who has been at best unkind to him and at worst tried to kill him and says, You’re a jerk, but you are still worth saving.

And then, over the course of the rest of the series, it is revealed to the other characters – and, importantly, to Liu Sang himself first – just how right Wu Xie was. In the end, by saving Liu Sang, Wu Xie saved himself, saved the world - but he saved him first without knowing any of that. And though Liu Sang’s nobler qualities shine more and more as the story progresses, Wu Xie chose to save him before he ever saw them.

And that’s what I love about Liu Sang’s journey. He doesn’t change. In the end, Liu Sang is still a bitch – but he’s also still a man who will do everything he can to save people who don’t deserve their fate. He’s someone who knows the value of his skills and will force you to respect him for that - but he’s also someone who is kind to people with less power than himself. Everything that makes Liu Sang Liu Sang was there from the very start. The change is that now everyone can see it.

Even Liu Sang himself.

Guidelines

1. Your creation must focus on your recipient’s requested ship (or one of their requested ships, if they have nominated multiple ones). While unrequested background ships are fine (unless listed as a Do Not Want), the focused ship must only be one of the requested ones. 2. You will be expected to create a gift matching your recipient’s request. Filling any specifying prompts is not obligatory, but try to create something you honestly think your recipient will enjoy! 3. You must not include anything that your recipient has listed as a DNW (Do Not Want). This goes for treats as well. 4. The minimum requirements for the gifts are 300 words for fic, one sketch on unlined paper for art (traditional or digital; no manips), or 30 seconds for a vid. 5. After the matching is done, all the requests will be made visible to everyone to allow for treating! There are no minimum requirements for treats (but remember to mind your recipient’s do not wants!). You can also create manips for treats. 6. This is an anonymous exchange: refrain from discussing your assignment in public. After the works are revealed, there’ll be one week anon period when the creators remain anonymous before the creator reveals. 7. If at any point you need to drop out, just click on the “default” button on your AO3 assignment page; we’ll find a pinch hitter to create a gift for your recipient instead. If you need an extension to finish your gift, contact the mods before the deadline. 8. After the reveals, comment on your gift in a timely manner. 9. Most importantly: be excellent to each other!

Remember that you don’t owe anyone an explanation about why something is a DNW, and that DNW are not meant to be taken personally. Just list the things you don’t like, “DNW: X, Y.”

Please list if you have any audio or visual triggers (such as flashing lights). This could be in your DNW or could be separate. Please also list song/music DNWs (e.g. "please no lyrics that use the n-word" or "please no lyrics in [specific language]" or “please no [specific genre/s of music”).

Prompts/specific ideas: if you have any prompts, you can also put them here! You can be as general or as detailed as you’d like, but remember that while your creator will try to make the best gift for you, filling a specific prompt is not obligatory. You can include a crossover prompt (with other DMBJ verse or other canons), but make sure it’s not the only prompt you have.

For vid prompts, please list things like genres/styles of music you like (or like in vids), vibes/tone/theme you’d like to see (e.g. “angsty amnesiac Xioage”, “Heisang crack”, etc.), and things like that. Please try to avoid giving one or two specific songs for a specific character/ship.

If you run out of space for your prompts, you can write a prompt post on another platform like Dreamwidth, Tumblr, GoogleDocs, etc. and put the link in your sign up.

If you chose novels as one of your fandoms, you can use this field to list the ones you’re familiar with, such as ‘Books 1-4′ , ‘main series only′, ‘main series + specific extras’, etc.

The requests will be made publicly visible after matching is done, so that others will be able to create treats (additional gifts) based on them!

Offers

Fandom - you have to choose at least one. If you can create works for any canon era, you can choose “Any”!

Genre - you have to choose at least three.

Ratings - you have to choose at least one. This will help matching what people are comfortable creating with what people are comfortable receiving.Warnings - you have to choose at least one. This does not mean that you have to create a gift with warnings, it's just for helping to match what people are comfortable writing with what people are comfortable receiving.

Optional Details - in this field, you can tell us more about the kind of works you like to create, for example if you really prefer established relationship, feel best with certain kinds of AUs, or like writing darkfic. We’ll take it into account when matching! By the same token, if there’s something you really don’t want to write, let us know here as well.

In the optional details of your offer, you can also name people you don’t want to be matched to, for example your regular beta, and we will do our best to avoid matching you!

The offers will only ever be visible to the mods; never to anyone else.

Your Assignment

You will be matched to create a gift for someone who requested at least one of the fandoms that you offer, with as many similar genres/likes as possible. This exchange will be hand-matched, after using AO3’s matching algorithm to first generate the potential matches.

If you have any issues when you receive your assignment (you have a question about it or think there’s an issue with it), contact the mods as soon as possible. Do not contact your recipient on your own.

You will have to create a gift for your recipient, fulfilling the minimum requirements of fandom, genre, and ship, and avoiding any stated “do not wants”. Filling exact prompts is optional, but try to create something matching your recipient’s likes that they will enjoy!

You will have to post your gift to the exchange AO3 collection before the due date (November 30th), using the “gift this work to” option to give it to your recipient. Your work will remain in the collection only visible to you and the mods until the reveals happen. Remember to tag your work appropriately or use the “chose not to warn” warning.

Treating

Treats are additional gifts for the participants! To allow for treating, the requests will be made visible when matching is done. You can create treats at any time until the creator reveals! There are no minimum requirements for treats, and manips are also allowed in addition to fic, art, and vids. As with assignments, you have to respect the recipient’s Do Not Wants, and while the optional details are optional, try to create something fitting the listed likes. One treat can only be gifted to one person.

Pinch Hits

In case someone needs to drop out, we will look for a pinch hitter to complete their assignment. Pinch hits will be posted to this tumblr and the DMBJ Yu Cun Discord.

Extensions

If you think you can finish your assignment, but you need a few days more, you can always ask for an extension!

Multi-Chapter Fics

If you are writing a multi-chapter fic for the exchange and don’t want to drop the entire fic at once, these are the posting guidelines for it:

Multi-chapter fics that are assignment fills must be fully written and at least the first chapter posted by the assignment deadline, ready for the fic reveals on December 10th.

From December 10th, at least one chapter is to be posted daily.

All chapters of the fic must be posted by the time of author reveals and end of treating on December 17th (If the fic is more than 7 chapters long, then this will mean that multiple chapters will need to be posted on some days).

Multi-chapter fics that are treats can begin to be posted at any time, but must also be fully posted by December 17th.

Make sure to check the email you use on AO3 frequently during the exchange, as it will be the primary means of communication. We might contact you if there is an issue with your sign-up or if your gift creator has a question for you.
