Liu Chang Characters Fortnight, April 3rd - 16th

The 2023 Liu Chang Characters Fortnight will be from Monday April 3rd - Sunday April 16th. These weeks celebrate all of Liu Chang’s characters in the DMBJ universe - Liu Sang, Wang Can, Yan Sanxing, Jiang Wu, and Liu Qianmo (although other of Liu Chang’s characters imported from their canon into DMBJ would certainly also fit!)

I just finished some stuff yesterday and am in between starting something new so I'll cheat a bit with the categories.

Currently watching:

Fairyland Lovers - I'm at 30/35 episodes but I just watch like one ep per week. I started this for Bai Yu but now I'm dragging myself through the last episodes for Xuan Lu as her character's background story should come up soon. The romance is kinda annoying as I see no chemistry between the main characters. Falling for someone just because she's the reincarnation of your previous love... I'm too aro for this.

The Lost Tomb Reboot - I just finished S2 yesterday. I started this for Zhu Yilong and it was entertaining enough, but the treatment of the female characters in this franchise... Being a woman in dmbj is more dangerous than being an actual grave robber :'(

Echo of Moonfall (Reboot side story) - Watched all of it yesterday because the friend who I watched Reboot with wanted more Liu Sang content.

Ping Yao Wang Shi (Reboot side story) - Same as Echo of Moonfall.

Currently Rewatching (aka I will make my friend watch these with me):

Mystery of the Abyss - Heihua movie was my first introduction to the dmbj franchise and I knew nothing about it while watching. Gonna be fun rewatching it with more knowledge now.

Word of Honor

Lighting Up The Stars - I might hate the haircut for Long-ge in this one, but the story and acting are amazing. Always a good cry.

Looking forward to:

Cloudy Mountain - The film will be released here on DVD/BD next month, I only watched it in cinemas with German dub so I'm excited for the original with Long-ge's voice.

The Comic Bang - Chinese drama adaptation of Gekkan shoujo nozaki-kun.

West Out of the Yu Men - This character of Bai Yu looks like he would go well with Zhu Yilong's Wu Xie. Also I'm taking anything with either of them that's not romance centric.

and 25 more titles on my plan to watch. and all the anime I've been neglecting since my descent into Guardian and Zhubai works... I need more time.

Liu Chang as Liu Qianmo in 平妖往事 / Ping Yao Wang Shi 

This is a 60-minute side story (30 episodes of 2 minutes each) about Liu Sang’s ancestor (and his friend, Wang Meng’s ancestor). It’s a side story for The Lost Tomb Reboot. That’s basically everything I know about it because I don’t speak Chinese and it doesn’t have English subs. It is not one of those shows where you can kind of figure out what’s happening from the visuals alone, although I did try!

Spotlight on: Shi Nian & Chongqi / Reunion: The Sound of the Providence

Shi Nian / Ten Years Later (十年之后) is the short story that covers Xiaoge returning from his ten years behind the Bronze Door.

Chongqi / Reboot (重启) is an in-progress sequel novel set approx. 5 years later, covering a new adventure back on the trail of Sanshu, the Thunder City, and searching for a cure for Wu Xie’s illness.

Chongqi has been adapted into the two season TV drama Chongqi Zhi Ji Hai Tinglei / Reunion: the Sound of the Providence (重啟之極海聽雷). There are also two short spinoff series, Ping Yao Wang Shi (平妖往事) and Yue Yun Hui Sheng / Moonfall Echo (月陨回声).

Summary - Chongqi

After fulfilling his ten year promise with Zhang Qiling, Wu Xie is now living in seclusion in Fujian. One day, he suddenly received a text message from his uncle, Wu Sanxing. Through various clues his uncle left behind, Wu Xie finds an ancient tomb that may be related to his uncle’s past. The tomb is the legendary South Sea King’s Tomb. But just as Wu Xie plans to search for it, Jin Wantang reveals his plan to his Uncle Two. After Ershu stops him and hears the story, he decides to join Wu Xie, Pangzi, and Zhang Qiling as they search for the tomb.

Season 1: The Iron Triangle Wu Xie, Pang Zi and Zhang Qiling restart their adventure after receiving an unusual text from Wu Sanxing. After trading their adventures for a normal life, a text from Wu Sanxing drives them to embark on a mysterious journey for the sake of family and friendship. 

Season 2: After finding out that Wu Sanxing discovered the secret of listening to thunder in the section of irredeemable goods in Warehouse 11, Wu Xie sets out with Pang Zi, Zhang Qiling, Bai Hao Tian, and others to discover the Thunder City. But as they learn of this secret, a long-hidden conspiracy is gradually approaching them.

Liu Sang and Li Jia Le were dispatched by Wu Xie to participate in an archaeological project. The two saw a mural at the archaeological site. The mural recorded the story of Moonbend Princess Qi Xia and young Jiang Wu. At the same time, they also found a peculiar meteorite. In the process of studying the meteorite jade, the two unexpectedly came to the world recorded in the mural.

Hi! Sorry if I bother! First off, happy new year! Second, I've seen that there are multiple movies around the lost tomb/reboot. If I wanna start watching them, which order should I start with? Is it a series or are all the movies independent? Hope I'm making sence :)

There are a few movies, yes! There's the standalone movie (Time Raiders, aka the Steampunk AU that is not connected to any of the shows and is probably more accurately described as 'inspired by' the novels rather than based on them), The Mystic Nine has four spinoff movies (Ganges Killing the Trees/Phantom of Bifang Buckle, Four Belongs to Abelmoschus/Slaughter of Abelmosk Gang, Tiger Bones Plum Blossom/Murders in the Xie Mansion, and Flowers Bloom in February/Hidden Dragons Underneath the Stage), Sha Hai/Tomb of the Sea has three spinoff movies (Hua Mei, Bang Ren, and Ran Gu), and Reboot has one spinoff movie (Escape from the Monstrous Snake). I will be perfectly honest, I'm not sure why Escape from the Monstrous Snake is billed as a Reboot movie when the main character of it (Hei Xiazi) is played by Ji Chen (the actor who played him in Sha Hai), not Baron Chen (the one who played him in Reboot) 😂 I guess they called it Reboot because it's been so long since Sha Hai? Maybe the same production team, too?

Reboot also has two spinoff micro-series, where each ep is only 2-5 minutes long, so they're each about as long as a movie themselves (Ping Yao Wang Shi and Moonfall Echo). Reboot and The Mystic Nine each have another movie in the works, too (although, again, the 'Reboot' movie has Ji Chen playing Hei Xiazi, and a completely new actor for Xie Yuchen).

Apart from one or two of the Mystic Nine movies, the spinoffs all follow various adventures of minor and side characters (or the ancestors of side characters, in the case of Ping Yao Wang Shi). They're all only peripherally (at best) connected to the plot of the shows. They're also all standalone, so it doesn't matter what order you watch them in, although it's better to watch the movies after the shows they're based on just so you know who the hell these characters are XD But if you've seen Reboot, you'll know the main characters of the Sha Hai movies, since they're in Reboot as well.
