For all her faults (dumb, rookie, reckless at that) Knitter knows how to navigate that fucking land, how to get by with scraps, how to survive. No, wouldn’t happen like that. Not here, not now either. Or would it? Stripes moves her hand again, tears a piece of meat off, chews.

It was commanded: You will be suffering from the Doom if you will not obey his sayings.When the people heard this, they began to jest and said: Go, make haste and bring the Doom! We don’t believe (I seek refuge in Allaah). The Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) is being commanded in this verse: They enjoin you hasten on the Doom. Say to them! Allaah Almighty keeps His Word. You consider that the Doom is getting late, but your one thousand years are even equal to Allaah’s one Day. The actual matter of understanding is that by disobeying the Messenger; the Doom will certainly come. There is no question of sooner or later. Listen to the circumstances of ancient people if you are in doubt! They used to commit sins and We used to give them respite. At last the Doom came and they were destroyed. Then the Lyrian woman took a breath and she started to sing. She sang in Reian, and the people gasped. Her voice was high and clear, like a beacon in the night, the guiding star for weak and weary travelers. Raveen’s heart faltered and the shudder that echoed through the room told him others were experiencing the same thing. Though he could hear the familiar Reian sounds coming from her lips, the Lyrian accent changed the sound and made it inhuman. He refused to call it godlike, but he could think of no other term.
He knew enough Reian to make out that she sang a sorrow-filled ballad of a soldier who had gone off and left his love. The gods had spared this boy from the perils of war, and he came back to find his love. She had killed herself when she had been given a letter, forged by an enemy suitor who said that he had died in battle, yet instead of choosing the rival, she chose death. He gripped her body and wept to the gods, asking them to bring her back. They made him a deal that if he could travel to the land of souls and he could find her spirit without his sight, they would bring her back. He only needed to indicate his choice with a kiss. He traveled through, unable to see, grasping spirits hands, and feeling their faces, their hair, moving on until at last, he came to one. He kissed the spirit and his sight was restored. He had chosen correctly, and the gods restored the woman’s life, returning them to the mortal world and granting them a home on a remote island where they would never be separated from each other again.
