Tonight had been advertised as the night to end all nights— a masquerade ball held by the king at the palace, and a brightly lit ballroom decorated with gold and the continent's finest silk, adorning the kingdom's rose insignia. Entertainers and musicians positioned around the vicinity to perform their best acts and tunes, and the gates were left wide open to welcome everyone who wanted to join in, given that they tried their best to dress for the occasion.
Today was an event open to all the kingdom's citizens, from high seated nobles to common men by the streets, everyone was welcome to participate in the king's annual ball. However, that fact didn't matter for a family such as yours. Your father was the Marquess, which meant that you were invited to every single ball or gathering held by the nobility for the nobility. At least, that was how it had been until the incident.
The peering eyes of both the nobles and commoners alike have left you frozen on your spot by the pillar. Your bright red ball gown, although beautiful, was not helping you hide away from the eyes of the crowd. It was evident they were all thinking the same thing.
The unfortunate daughter of a fallen marquess.
News had gotten out about your family's crisis and had spread to the public like a disease. The Grand Marquess losing money, property, and power: The fall of a great noble. The story made headlines for weeks on end— rumors mixing in with the truth, and eventually, everyone had drawn the same conclusion. Pitiful.
You worry about your parents at the other end of the room, doing their best to mingle with the other nobles. The heavy atmosphere was weighing down on your chest.
Closing your eyes and taking a deep breath, you try to think of the things that calmed you down: the rustic smell of old books at the public library, the warm feeling you'd get when the rays of sunlight touch your skin as you sit by the window with your face buried deep into your favorite classic, the bright smile the common mage boy would give you everytime you crossed paths—
"Wow."
A familiar voice brings you back from your thoughts.
"You look incredible in that." The same bright smile you'd envisioned earlier now stood in front of you.
You gaze in awe at the man before you, dressed in what you could only describe as the most beautiful and elegant ensemble you'd seen tonight. The way the white suit hugged his waist left little room for the imagination. You doubt even the king himself could top this off.
"Lady Y/N. I believe fate must have brought us together in this fine evening." The man gently bends down, taking your hand and planting a kiss so fleeting that you barely felt it. Even with the golden mask on, you could easily tell who it was.
"Kai.."
"Ah, and here I was hoping I'd be a little more mysterious tonight." Kai holds back his laughter as he gazed upon you once more. You can't help but do the same.
Tonight, he looked nothing of a common mage but that of a king himself. If you hadn't known him beforehand, you would've mistaken him as so, especially with tonight's main event— the reveal of the king's successor. But alas, what the mage boy had going on for him was merely for appearances. A commoner like him could never be king in a world where even dreaming of becoming one was considered to be of highest absurdity.
"I thought you said you weren't attending?"
Kai shrugs, folding his hands behind his back. "And refuse my lady when you so graciously asked me out?"
His response catches you off guard. "I don't recall ever asking you anything of that sort."
"You asked if I'd attend."
"And that counts as asking you out?"
Kai chuckles. "When you asked me with such a cute look on your face, it was difficult to think you weren't looking forward to me being here."
And he was right. Given your circumstances, Kai being here with you was like a breath of fresh air. You'd been praying all night that he'd magically arrive to help you take your mind off of things, and you felt like crying out in joy when he actually did.
Kai looks around, seemingly getting a sense of the pressure you were in. "Shall we take a stroll around the garden, my lady?"
You follow his line of sight and spot the royal garden just outside the window. "I'll let you accompany me if you drop the whole my lady business."
Kai purses his lips as he takes your hand in his. "Can't you let me be fancy for one night?"
Every moment you'd spent with Kai up until this point had been the highlight of your days. As the daughter of the Marquess, you'd spent most of your time holed up inside your manor. Women barely got any education aside from the usual classes on manners and societal etiquette, and that included nobles as well. But that never stopped you. Once a week, when the guards changed shifts by the gate, and the maids and butlers were all busy with the weekly general cleaning, you'd take the opportunity to slip out in disguise, undetected by anyone. The main goal was to get to the public library and obtain access to educational material— ones that didn't involve any prim and proper rubbish that you've read over a thousand times.
The first time outside was rather difficult. You barely managed to get inside the library's more educational section while passing as a man. However, every succeeding attempt became easier and easier until coming out in secret and gaining access didn't seem like that much of a hassle anymore.
At the library, you were free to read any book you want, and used this opportunity to brush up on some business and economics as well as some of the basic sciences. You spent the first few months stocking up on knowledge until you felt it fine to relax a little and start reading novels to pass the time without the help of a disguise.
There was a section in the library that you hadn't checked; one that you'd deemed unnecessary as it only contained children's literature. It wasn't until you'd heard the sound of a man's voice followed by children's laughter that you felt compelled enough to take a peek.
"And then, the dragon swooped down onto the village and attacked the innocent villagers! ROARRR. Breathing fire as hot as, well, uh— FIRE!"
You slipped up and giggled at the young man's amusing narration, piping down a bit after realizing that he had noticed you from behind the shelves, throwing a knowing smirk your way.
It was then that he pulled down his cloak. Wavy brown locks gracefully reaching the back of his neck, bright eyes that could make any person let their guard down— he looked around your age which made you feel more at ease.
The young man steps back, dramatically breathing fire out of his mouth as the children cheered. Some were yelling at him to continue until only smoke came out, and you swore you heard one of them ask if he could make the fire turn green. Ridiculous, you think. But you were no different from these children, only being able to stand there in awe at the young man's trick. Perhaps turning the fire green wasn't such a terrible idea.
You've heard of mages among the commoners before, and had met a few that visited your manor but this was the first time you'd seen one in action. The flames that came out of his mouth looked awfully hot but the young man didn't even blink or showed any signs of pain.
He stops the fire and clears his throat, now kneeling down to face the children. "The villagers were worried sick! What would happen to their crops, their produce, their livelihood? If only a hero would come along and save them!" He makes an overly exaggerated wail before gasping.
"Well, who do we have here? A warrior has come to save the villagers!" The young man points at your direction and you feel your blood run cold as all the children in the room had turned their attention towards you, hopeful.
"A young maiden has arrived to slay the evil dragon!"
You quickly shake your head at his statement, holding your arms out in a cross. "No, kids. Don't believe what this man says. I am not a warrior, and I'm certainly not here to slay any dragons"
The young man raises a brow, getting up from his spot. "Then why do you have the magical sword that was forged to slay the mighty dragon?"
"What sword?"
The young man snaps his fingers. "That sword."
The weight on your hips dip on one side and you couldn't believe your eyes as a sheathed sword had magically manifested beside your waist out of thin air. "How did you— wait, is this a real sword?! You can't play around with real swords in front of children!"
The children turn towards the young man in confusion.
"Well, kids. Do you want the kind lady to slay the dragon with a real sword?"
"YES!" The children cheered.
The young man turns to you with a smile. "You gotta give the kids what they want, Miss."
An exasperated expression makes its way to your face. "I am not slaying any made up dragons!"
"Now, what's all this talk about slaying dragons?"
Taehyun, one of the stricter librarians, had come out of nowhere, surprising everyone. His eyes scan the room and quickly notices three things: (1) the dangerous sword hanging on your waist, (2) the excessive amount of children in the room when the sign on the way in definitely mentioned a capacity of only five, and (3) someone let the mage boy inside the library again. The culprit was evident.
"Jung Kai, I swear to the heavens I will—"
"Alright kids, time to go! We'll end the story next time!" The young man, Kai, rushes the disappointed children out of the section before they heard something they shouldn't.
You were about to walk away yourself but was quickly stopped by Taehyun's hand blocking your path. "Kai, didn't I tell you that you're not allowed to perform magic inside the library? And seriously," He confiscates the sword on your waist, holding it up in the air. "Violence?"
Kai looks at you and grins. "I suppose we could've gone with a more romantic ending. Something like the warrior's kiss saving the dragon from his curse, and he turns back into this super handsome, super cute, and super macho mage."
The way he shamelessly described himself left you speechless, and you steal a glance at the librarian who looked as equally disgusted as you are.
"Just clean up the mess before you leave. And that means you too, Miss Dragon Slayer."
"But I didn't even—" You cut yourself off after Taehyun dismisses himself from the room.
The section falls silent and Kai walks up to you, a smile ever present in his face. "I'm guessing this is the start of our new friendship?"
And that was what started it all. Everytime you'd visit the library after that, you seemed to bump into Kai more often than you liked. He saw through the disguise the first time he saw you wearing it and had promised to not utter a single word to anyone. The mage boy was much more reliable than he seemed to be, often helping you in your studies and teaching you more than the books ever could. Sometimes, he'd convince you to take a stroll around town and had shown you sights and wonders you wouldn't have expected to see inside the kingdom.
Before you knew it, Kai had become someone you'd cherished, and someone whose company you genuinely appreciated. He was patient and understanding as your makeshift mentor, and was this fun and outgoing guy whenever you two were out together. Kai became the first friend you'd made on your own regardless of status and the only friend you wished to keep by your side.
"I take it that the people in the ballroom were too much?" Kai speaks the moment arrived at the garden.
"Please. I couldn't even breathe in there." You play it off with a chuckle but thoughts of worry still plague your mind. "I'm guessing you probably know by now."
"About what? The fact that you're the daughter of the Marquess or that the Marquess has been in a crisis for a while?"
"Both."
Kai reaches for your hand, holding it reassuringly. "I've known for a while but that doesn't change anything now, does it? We became friends without the burden of our status, and we'll stay as friends regardless."
You hated this, hated how he always knew exactly what to say. The heat rushes up to your face and you squeeze his hand tighter, avoiding eye contact. "Thank you."
But truthfully, there was a little voice in Kai's head that wished you could be something more. Not after you'd shared those intimate moments alone at the library at dusk, not after he rushed in to catch you in his arms when you fell while shelving a book on the top shelves, and especially not after you almost shared a kiss after saying goodbye that night he'd helped you sneak back in.
Even now, as he lovingly gazed at your silhouette beneath the moonlight, he'd hoped that he'd have the chance to tell you how he felt. But then again, the chance could be right now at this very moment. The two of you were, afterall, at the king's ball.
"So, how were the gentlemen earlier?"
"What?" You raise your head to face Kai.
"I've no doubt that hundreds of people had been lining up to dance with you all evening." Kai grins as he gently lets go of your hand.
"Please, I haven't danced at all tonight."
"I find that quite hard to believe."
You sigh, recalling the events from earlier. "No one would want to be seen dancing with a fallen Marquess' daughter now would they?"
"Not when you look this beautiful?" Kai jokingly walks around you and you shy away from his gaze.
"You know I never say things I don't mean, Y/N." Kai bends down and holds your hands in his. "And believe me, I don't think anyone could ever be as lovely as you."
"Is flattery your main personality trait now?" You say as an attempt to not let his compliment affect you any further than it should but fail miserably so.
Kai stands before you with an unreadable expression. You'd argue this was the most serious look he's ever had since you'd met him.
"Care to dance?" Kai asks, leaning in closer, your faces merely inches apart. You feel your heart beating loudly in your chest, and you're almost afraid he might hear.
The moonlight casts a shadow on Kai's face, and despite the darkness, his eyes glistened, reflecting your own as you stared into his. You've never seen anyone look so beautiful. And here he was, telling you that you're the loveliest person he's ever known.
"Right now?"
Kai nods, taking off his mask and tossing it over to the side. "And I'd like it if we could dance without our masks too. I've been wanting to get a good look at your face all night."
You chuckle, removing your mask and tossing it to to the ground next to his. "And how do you suppose we dance without music? My reputation's already dirt at this point and I do not want to be branded as the crazy noble dancing at the royal garden in complete silence."
Kai fails to suppress his laughter, holding on to your shoulder to maintain himself upright. "Well, I wouldn't want to let my dear lady look crazy now would I?"
"And what are you planning to do?"
"Well, I am a mage." Kai smirks as he manifests a scepter out of thin air, leaving a trail of golden dust flurrying down.
This was the first time you've ever seen it in person. Kai had mentioned how he needed the aid of his scepter to perform high level magic, but he'd never taken it out in front of you until now. One look at the scepter and anyone could tell not just any old mage owned the darn thing. It looked majestic by all means, intricately decorated with gold and topped off with a brightly colored red gemstone you couldn't seem to identify. You'd heard that mages often created their own unique gemstones as a manifestation of their mana but for Kai's to be red, which had been said to be a quite powerful variant, made you wonder just how powerful your friend had been.
"And here we go." Kai takes the scepter in his hand and drives it into the ground. The impact causes a wave of light to burst from the scepter and spread throughout the reaches of garden. In a split-second, the wave of light rushes back into its source, compressing into a huge orb of light lifting up into the sky, rivaling the moon with its glow. The orb splits into smaller pieces and starts to dance around the garden, leaving you in awe at the spectacle.
Kai finds himself grinning from ear to ear at your reaction. He'd studied magic as an expression of rebellion against his father but now, he'd found another purpose to perform these little tricks of his. He places his hand on your waist and pulls you closer. "Wait for it."
The orbs of light find their places around you, slowly taking the shape of various instruments you've seen inside the ballroom, from strings to percussions, and even wind instruments. Smaller pieces of light continued to hover the surroundings, resembling glowing fireflies in the dark.
"Kai, this is beautiful." You look up at the young man, and he steps away, bowing his head as he plants yet another kiss on the back of your hand.
"May I have this dance?"
His eyes meet yours and you feel your heart skip a beat. It was rather difficult to explain. The Kai in front of you right now had been the same Kai you've always known, but somehow.. different.
You raise your hand for him to take, guiding your other hand to find perch on his shoulder, and his finding its place on your waist. With the first step, the instruments started playing. It's a piece you've heard before, one that Kai had fondly hummed nearly everytime you were together at the library.
It was as if the world had faded into the distance, and at this moment, there was only you and him, dancing alone in the garden. He pulls you close, his hold gentle and warm. Kai spins you around. The heel of your shoe collides with a rock, and you nearly stumble back until Kai manages to grab you by the waist on time, pulling you back into his arms.
You spot the smirk on his face under the moonlight, and you press a finger against his lips. "Not one word."
"I wasn't going to say anything." Kai lets you go, and you quickly grab a hold of his arms to find balance.
"Of course you weren't."
"Well, I do have something I have to tell you. A few things, actually."
You cock a brow at him, and he steps forward. "I'll tell you the most important part first."
"And that is?"
Kai reaches out to cup your cheeks, gazing into your eyes as if asking permission. You didn't need to say anything for him to understand, and he closes the gap between you, pressing his lips against yours. The feeling was foreign but certainly welcome, and you soon close your eyes and reciprocate, wanting to feel more of his soft lips, and wanting to hold him closer and closer.
For long had you held out on this, on actually acknowledging your growing feelings for the lad in fear of having to live with the thought of him not feeling the same. But in this moment, you felt a heavy burden being lifted from your shoulders.
"Kai, I.."
The light from the orbs dim down and soon dissipates. Kai pulls away, gazing upon your flushed face. "You mean the world to me, Y/N. I don't think my life would ever be the same without you."
The trumpets blare in the ballroom, a signal that the new king was to make an appearance soon. You feel Kai's hand around yours. "As for my other confession, I think it's best we head back first."
He leads you back into the ballroom, and disappears the moment you find your parents in the crowd. You join them in the center as everyone gathers to get a glimpse at the new king.
The herald makes his way beside the grand staircase, straightening himself up to make the announcement that every citizen had been waiting to hear all evening.
"Presenting the next in line to the throne, to rule the vast lands of our esteemed nation, and lead us into a continuing era of prosperity! Our future King, His Royal Highness, Kai Kamal Huening!"
The doors open, revealing Kai, your Kai, adorned in the royal family's crest, robes, and jewelries as he made himself known to his loyal subjects.
Behind him was public librarian, Kang Taehyun, who had been revealed to be serving as one oc the King's advisors, and now, for the new monarch.
"Long live the King!"
Kai could pick out your from the crowd in a heartbeat, hos gaze meeting yours as he flashes you his signature smile. You couldn't believe what was happening— Kai, your best friend in the whole world, had just confessed his love to you. And now, that same Kai had revealed to you and to the public that he had been the future ruler of the country all along. The crowds cheered.
"Long live the King!"
"Long live the King." You whisper to yourself, wondering what the future has in store for you.

HIDDEN HILLS WEEKLY ISSUE #2
In this issue of Hidden Hills Weekly, we are talking about the outrageous lives of our celebrities in the gated community! We talk about polyamorous lovers to concerts in your every own kitchen!
ISABELLE AMOR’S ADDING ON TO HER POLY LIFESTYLE?
For the past week, Isabelle Amor, 28 has been in New York filming her newest show, “Only Murders In The Building.” She has been seen up and down the busy streets, filming scenes and having fun on set but fans have noticed that the singer/actress is having too much fun with her co-star. The pair have been seen getting quite cozy with one another when the cameras cut. They have been seen with big smiles and sparkles in their eyes. It comes as quite a shock as Isabelle is in an unconfirmed relationship with country music stars Annika Baddie, 25, and Cameron Nelson, 26. You did read that right, Isabelle is dating Both Annika and Cameron. They are living a polyamorous lifestyle where three people are all seeing each other.
Fans are wondering if Isabelle’s co-star is going to be added to her relationship with the country stars. Fans took it far enough to compare the relationship and pictures of Isabelle with her ex-boyfriends and current lovers to her new beau. Those pictures include her famous love story with James Hemmings, 27, with who they share one child together. Mateo Hemmings, 3. One fan stated on Twitter that - “Jelle is way more hotter than this! What is this?!” Along with the tweet was a shared picture of Belle with her co-star. While other fans tweeted that Belle looked happier with her two other loves. “Belle looks GLOWING with Ani and Cam! LET HER BE HAPPY!” Says another fan.
What do Annika and Cameron think about Isabelle potentially looking for another lover? What do you all think? Let us know!
WALLEN FATHERED A CHILD IN SECRET WITH MACKENZIE?
On February 26, 2021, the multi-talented actress Mackenzie Locklear, 23, told the world via Instagram that she had given birth on February 15th to a baby boy named Phoenix Finn Locklear. The actress went silent on all types of social media after the Sweetheart Dance we held on the 12th of this month until her huge announcement. We haven’t heard much about her birth but everyone is wondering who the father is. Mackenzie never said out in any interviews who the father of her son is but many people are assuming it’s Wallen Ward, 28, country singer. People are only assuming this as Mackenzie has been seen at many of Ward’s concerts in the past. She is either in the sound booth or she is backstage with everyone else. Wallen is currently married to Madeline King, 22, the youngest of the King Siblings.
We have reached out to all parties but we got nothing but got declined to speak from Locklear’s team, but we heard nothing back from King & Ward’s team just yet. But we will keep you all updated on the matter when we get the word!
ODESSA’S NIGHTMARE!
On the day of February 18th, 2021, we got reports of Daniel Kaylan, 29, had left his household with his daughter, Heather without notifying her mother and his fiancée, Odessa Fitzpatrick, 27. We were told that the police were called on the scene as Odessa had no idea where her daughter had gone to and assumed she had gone missing. It wasn’t clear where Daniel had gone with Heather but one thing that was clear is the fact that Odessa was not having any of it when Daniel revealed that he was the one who took Heather and left.
The couple just welcomed their third child, a son, into the world on the 14th of this month. Who they have not released the name yet. They also share another son, Wyatt, who is the oldest of the Kaylan Clan.
Rumors had spread that Odessa had indeed got the police involved once she could not find Heather anywhere and Daniel had to come home to talk them himself to explain what had really gone down. We know for sure, this is something he will never do again and might spend the rest of the year in the dog house for this one!
LOVE TRIANGLE IS STILL ON THE RISE!
Is 5 Seconds Of Summer’s guitarist still in love with a former groupie? The answer is unclear to many but also very clear to those around them! Spencer Stone, 25, used to sleep around constantly with Lanie Sinclair, 22, back when the band was touring for their album Sounds Good Feels Good. They currently share two children together, Lyric, 4, and Mercury, 2 months. Everything was going well between the two as co-parents before Spencer moved in with his girlfriend, Francesca “Frankie” Hart, 25. The house was already sold but Lanie ended up staying the night with Spencer the weekend before the big move and rumors have it that they have done more than just kiss that night. Sources had said that Sinclair left early in the morning with their daughter and her daughter, Lucina, 9 months, who she shares with her current boyfriend, Theodore “Theo” Dean, 26. Lanie was currently pregnant when she stayed the night.
Rumors only fueled even more as Lanie went off with Theo to Paris for nearly a month after giving birth to her son with Spencer. Theo was fresh out of an engagement with Nicole Hampton, 24, and Lanie was dealing with Spencer’s flip-flopping feelings for her. Sources had said in Aspen that Stone had made Sinclair cry more than once. Reports claim to overhear a fight between Spencer and Frankie as he admitted kissing Lanie. Witnesses say that Hart claimed to feel like she had been cheated on since Spencer agreed to father another baby with Lanie without talking to her about it first. This caused a huge rift between Hart and Stone in Las Vegas where Frankie walked out on him during blackout dinner.
During the Sweetheart Dance, many eyewitnesses had said that the whole night Spencer couldn’t tear his eyes away from his ex-groupie while she danced with her former turned current boyfriend Theo. What will Frankie think about all of this? What does Theo think about all of this as well?
SCOTTIE’S FREE CONCERT!
The Model/Youtuber Scottie Blake, 27, made headlining news when she went live on Instagram the other night and totally forgotten about it! It went from attempting to make pasta for dinner into a full-on action concert for thousands of people unknowing to her. Many of her fans were delighted to see Scottie enjoying herself as she danced around her kitchen and sang her heart out to her favorite songs. They blasted through her speakers and we do not blame her for forgetting about being live! When you have great music taste like Scottie, it’s common to forget what you were doing and just want to have some fun.
One fan wrote on Twitter, “LOOK AT HOW CUTE SCOTTIE IS!” With many heart emojis and a screenshot from the live.
Although trolls were making fun of the model, many of Scottie’s fans were quick to defend her and one started out. “As if you don’t do this when you’re alone lmao bye”
One thing is for sure, Scottie Blake, we need that album, and secondly, keep on dancing and never stop!
NICOLE HAMPTON IS TURNING TO A WRITER!
The rumors might be true! They might be false! But we do hope it’s true! Nicole Hampton, 24, had said it herself that she planned on writing a book called - “boy mom shit - you’ll be grey before thirty.” She then goes on to explain why she decided to write a book on parenting. It was because of her oldest son, Zeus, 6, who she shares with Derek King, 27. He was attempting to talk to his youngest brother, Asher, 4, who she shares with Brody Roberts, 30, to jump off his bed onto his skateboard so that he could ‘surf’ down the stairs. Luckily, Mama Hampton was quick to put that idea out of their heads and put their safety into their minds. Who knows what could have happened if she didn’t catch them in time!
As we are all parents in Hidden Hills, it would be so nice to hear what other parents have to go through. All children are wild, fun, and beautiful. They may drive us all up the wall but we do love them with all of our hearts! So, Nicole, we would love and buy your book! Give us a call when it’s about to be released! Don’t be shy now!
BRODY IS MOVING ON?!
Yes, you heard it here first! Brody Roberts says that he is ready to move on with his life and find that special someone! Our close sources say that he has come to terms with his ex-girlfriend, Nicole Hampton, 24 is moving on with her life and he is ready to do the same. As we stated in a previous story, the couple shares a son together, Asher, 5. The producer and director have been keeping a low profile recently but want to change that and step out more. We have to say that we’re excited to see Brody out and about again!
People close to the director stated that he wanted to connect with someone and meet that special someone in an authentic way and is adamantly opposed to dating apps. We get it, we don’t want to be catfished in this household. We were told that he has been asking around for ideas of places to meet people and even may have asked a few people to join him on that adventure. We do not know who at this time but once we get more details, we will share them with you all!

 ***
It was a mistake. You knew that. You never should have gone to that stupid party. It was all a mistake. Sure, you promised your friend that you would go. You may have promised her to go to that house party, but you didn’t specify how long. You could have gone in for a minute before leaving undetected. She would get wasted in the first 30 seconds after all. You could have hung by the food and drinks section and be the antisocial nerd you were. You should have done anything – anything – to not be in this situation. You should not be against the wall, the school’s bad boy against you.
Damian’s lips were slanted against yours, pressing against them carefully, as if you were a porcelain doll ready to break. His hands were either side of your head, his fingers digging into the red brick walls. His shirt was balled in your fists, desperately wishing to be closer.
It was a mistake. You knew that. He knew that, most of all.
He pulled away slowly; brilliant green eyes bore into your (E/C) hues. Flushing a scarlet, you let go of his shirt. But he didn’t let you go.
 “How was that, Beloved?”
4 words. That was all it took for your insides to melt and your heart to pick up its pace. You opened and closed your mouth, gaping at him as if you were a fish out of water. This was a mistake, a mistake you made perfectly sober.
 ***
Two weeks. Damian didn’t talk to you for two weeks and it was driving you insane. You didn’t do anything but kiss, sure, but he was Bruce Wayne’s son. Surely he would fall into the same trap as his father. Bringing a girl so close, so close, and then leave without warning, leaving them wanting more. And you were disappointed to say that his tricks worked on you. You couldn’t sleep, couldn’t eat. You were pathetic. He left you wanting more than a kiss, and that scared you the most.
But you didn’t know. After all, how could you? How could you possibly know about his alter-ego, the mischievous crime-fighting vigilante? And Damian was careful. He made sure you didn’t know. He made sure you weren’t put into any danger. And if that meant going on an undercover mission for a few weeks to clear his head, so be it. But even though he had 2 weeks to do anything but think of you, all he did was think of you. The complete opposite of his intentions.
His family knew of his infatuation. Of course, they did, Damian was their little brother. Tim was a genius, able to hack into any electrical appliance. Dick was a fully trained policeman. Jason was a gun enthusiast who was more observant than he should be. And Bruce was Batman, the feared vigilante whose name struck fear into every villain in Gotham. How could they not know?
It was the little things at first. The way he would drift into a subconscious faze when he was training because he was thinking of you. Or the way how he would stare a few seconds too long at your social media account. How he would search up every definition of your name.
Damian Wayne has fallen head over heels for a girl he barely even knew. He fell for a girl he kissed at a house party because he found it way too damn irresistible to not kiss you after the way you chewed your bottom lip. But there is no way you would forgive him after he went AWOL weeks later.
So, when he returned to school the following month, he made sure to pull you into an empty classroom during your lunch break.
“What the-” You stopped short when you realised who you pulled you in. “Damian?”
 “I would like to apologise.”
“Of course you should apologise!” You slapped his chest angrily, pushing him away from you. He didn’t fight back. “You go off and kiss me and then you leave! No note, no text, no freaking call?! Do you know how much that hurt?”
A tear fell down your cheek, warm against your skin. You forced yourself to look Damian in the eye, his usual cocky and mischievous hues filled with guilt. “(Y/N)-”
“Let me finish! You can’t just kiss me like that-”
 “Like what?”
You flush, glaring at him. Well, trying to, anyway. You licked your bottom lip, suddenly needing a glass of water. In two strides, Damian’s face was centimetres away from yours, his minty breath fanning your face. His stare was holding, staring deep into your eyes.
“How do I kiss you, Beloved?”
“I-” The words were caught in your throat and you tried desperately to gather your thoughts.
 “Maybe you need reminding.”
You subconsciously licked your lips again and you knew he was growing weak. You looked up through your eyelashes, smiling innocently at him. “Is something wrong?”
“Fuck it.” His lips were on yours once again, his arms tightening around your waist. Your hands were on his chest when he pulled back, his forehead against yours. “Don’t do that.”
 “Do what?”
 “You know what.”
You didn’t respond, instead pressing your lips to his desperately, clinging on to him as if he was your life source. And he was.
 ***
It was a mistake. You knew that. People were curious. You of all people should know. 3 months of keeping your relationship with Damian a secret, people were bound to find out. Damian said that he didn’t want you to feel uncomfortable with all the paparazzi and you were truly grateful.  Yeah, well, people were going to find out eventually.
Damian Wayne: Out with another fling?
Damian Wayne is taking on his father’s step – and not just the company
 Damian Wayne has a girlfriend?
The headlines made the papers and you were not amused. You marched your way to Wayne Manor, using your spare key to enter the mansion. Alfred instantly came to your side, asking if you needed any assistance.
 “Where’s Damian?”
 “He’s not home, Miss (L/N).”
You weren’t satisfied. “Where is he?”
Alfred frowned. If he told you, he was sure you would go to the designated spot and search for him. You were persistent like that. “I’m not sure, young miss.”
 “Then where are the others?”
 “Not home as well, miss.”
You let out a disgruntled groan, eyebrows knitting together as you clenched the newspaper in your fist. Of course, he wasn’t home. Whipping your phone out, you decided to give him a call.
 ***
Halfway across Gotham city, in the middle of fighting Killer Croc, Damian’s phone rang.
‘If you wanna be my lover~’ the boy froze. Did you change his ringtone again?! However, now was not the time to answer a call.
“Robin, pay attention,” he heard his father call out.
 “Apologies, Batman.”
Before a minute passed, his phone rang again. ‘You gotta get with my friends~’
“Oh god dammit!” Giving up on his dignity, he answered the call.
 “Damian, where are you?”
“Uh…” He let out a grunt, ducking under a pipe that was thrown at his face. “Nowhere!”
“Sure…” he could hear how sceptic you were from through the phone. “Have you seen the papers?!”
“Papers?” He responded weekly, groaning when the police came with reinforcements. And guns. “Beloved, I really have to get going-”
He barely finished his sentence when the police began to open fire, missing his leg by inches (or millimetres). “Damian, are those gunshots?!”
“It’s from a game!” He blurted, sweat falling down his brow.
“No way, Bruce has good speakers, but not that good. Where are you?! Did you rob a bank or something?!”
“No, but I think you robbed my heart.” Damn, was he turning into Grayson? “Beloved, can I call you back?”
“Oh, sure, call me back when you finished fighting Killer Croc, you do that.” With a final huff, you ended the call.
Damian did not need this stress right now. Besides, how on earth did you know that he was fighting Killer Croc? Now was not the time to be impressed. He focused on the fight, reminding himself that after this was over and done with, he could finally go back home and explain everything to you. Or rather, maybe he didn’t have to go back home to talk to you.
The sound of a policeman yelling split his focus and he narrowly missed being shot in the gut.
“What the hell are you doing, lady?! Do you not see the abnormally large crocodile that we’re fighting here?!”
“What the hell are you doing?!” the girl demanded, her hands on her hips. “Why don’t you just leave the crime fighting to Robin and Batman? You’re only causing more problems for yourself as well as creating more casualties. You’re making Killer Croc more freaked out.”
“Hey, Damian, is that your girlfriend?” He heard Dick ask through his intercom. The man had been injured previously while fighting Poison Ivy the week before and was still in recovery in the Bat cave.
Robin groaned, “You can hear her arguing with the policeman?”
“No, I’m watching her through the city’s security cameras. She is quite the feisty one,” he chuckled. “Better get her out of here before she loses an arm or 2.”
“Relax, they are evacuating her out now. She’s trying to find me, that is all.”
A few hours later, after Killer Croc was knocked out and taken away, Damian hid in an alley to change. He had just pulled a sweater over his head when he heard someone clear their throat. “So, you really were fighting Killer Croc, huh?”
He sighed, spinning around on his heel, only to find you standing behind him. “How long have you been standing there?”
“Long enough to see all you battle scars.” You glared at him. “Why didn’t you tell me?”
Damian rolled his eyes, leaning against the brick walls of the alley. “Tell you that I was doing this?”
“I would have understood, you know.” You wrapped your arms around yourself, suddenly insecure. “The more you sneak around, the more I assume… things.”
“Assume what?” he challenged, looking at you.
You shrug, sighing. “There are rumours that go around. In the papers, at school, on social media… things about me that I don’t need to hear. People say things that are so dumb and rash. They act as if they own the world, you know?” You bit your lip, letting out a groan.
“Hey, if I didn’t like you, would we be having this conversation right now?” Damian’s emerald green eyes bore into yours as if they were intense stars that burned in the sky. “If I didn’t like you, would I have kissed you and done something so irresponsible?”
You chuckle, “I guess not. But people have feelings and insecurities, Dami. You can’t just leave me hanging. No more secrets, okay?”
He nodded, taking a few steps towards you and taking your hands. “No more secrets. I solemnly swear.”

“Crime is a sucker’s road...”
“There was a rough desert wind blowing into Los Angeles that evening. It was one of those hot, dry Santa Ana's that come down through the mountain passes and curl your hair, make your nerves jump and your skin itch. On nights like that, every booze party ends up in a fight. And meek little housewives feel the edge of a carving knife and study their husband's necks. Anything can happen when the Santa Ana blows in from the desert.”
With those vivid and evocative lines pulled straight from the pages of Raymond Chandler and richly delivered by Van Heflin, The Adventures of Philip Marlowe came to radio on June 17, 1947.
Chandler was thirty-nine when The Big Sleep, the first Philip Marlowe novel, was published and the world of detective fiction was never the same. It’s Chandler who gives us the archetypal private eye as knight errant, working his way through a world of corruption and vice while he is guided by his own moral compass. Along with Dashiell Hammett, Chandler invented and popularized the “hard-boiled” style of detective fiction, and his signature character proved to be one of the most popular detectives to solve cases during the Golden Age of Radio.
Tumblr media
In the years between the publication of The Big Sleep and the premiere of Marlowe’s weekly radio adventures, Chandler’s novels were adapted to the screen six times. Farewell, My Lovely and The High Window were retooled for other cinematic detectives (The Falcon and Michael Shayne, respectively); and Marlowe himself was played by four different actors in four films (Dick Powell in Murder, My Sweet; Humphrey Bogart in The Big Sleep; Robert Montgomery in Lady in the Lake; and George Montgomery - no relation - in The Brasher Doubloon, another adaptation of The High Window).
On radio, Dick Powell recreated his role for Murder, My Sweet productions on The Lux Radio Theatre and Hollywood Star Time, and The Big Sleep was adapted for a (sadly lost) broadcast of The Mollé Mystery Theater. But Marlowe wouldn’t headline his own series until the summer of 1947 when the detective was hired as NBC’s summer replacement for Bob Hope. MGM contract player and Academy Award winner Van Heflin starred as Marlowe, with scripts based on Chandler’s own stories. Writer Milton Geiger adapted “Red Wind” for the first episode, and it was a perfect story to introduce Marlowe to radio audiences. Set against the howling Santa Ana wind blowing through the streets of LA, it’s a story of murder, blackmail, two affairs, and old secrets coming to the surface. And wisely, Geiger kept Chandler’s signature dialogue and narration for Heflin to deliver.
Tumblr media
Heflin prepared for the role by riding along with Los Angeles police officers before and during the run of the show. Heflin was a fine Marlowe; though he was just under 40, he sounds older, world-weary and cynical. But he also has good timing with a quip, and we see the romantic errant knight described by Chandler come through. He’s tough, but also tender; when he learns that the cherished pearl necklace given to his client by her late lover is a string of glass beads, he doesn’t tell her. He concocts a story about her blackmailer pawning the original pearls and he saves her from losing the memory that’s kept her going since her lover’s death. Despite his strong performance, Heflin failed to win over Chandler. In a letter to fellow mystery writer Erle Stanley Gardner (creator of Perry Mason), Chandler described the series and Heflin as “thoroughly flat.” Obviously, he’s the expert when it comes to Mr. Marlowe, but I have to respectfully disagree with him on this call. The NBC series lasted thirteen weeks, and when the time came for more episodes, Heflin’s film career prevented his participation. Only a handful of episodes survive; in addition to “Red Wind,” there are two other Chandler adaptions – “Trouble is My Business” and “The King in Yellow,” an episode that co-stars future radio Marlowe Gerald Mohr.
One year later, Philip Marlowe returned to radio in another weekly series of adventures. Producer/director Norman Macdonnell, a veteran of Escape and other programs, oversaw the production of the new show, which premiered on CBS on September 26, 1948. Stepping into Marlowe’s shoes was actor Gerald Mohr, a regular presence on Suspense, Escape, Our Miss Brooks, and The Whistler. Mohr brought a hard edge and a grim determination to Marlowe’s voice; his booming, powerful delivery was a contrast to Heflin’s approach. Mohr’s Marlowe used his fists (and his .38 tucked away in shoulder holster) when necessary; he marched through his cases and  bellowed the show’s legendary opening week after week: “Get this and get it straight…crime is a sucker’s road, and those who travel it wind up in the gutter, the prison, or the grave!”
The Adventures of Philip Marlowe was a hit, with scripts by Mel Dinelli, Robert Mitchell, and Gene Levitt.  By 1949, the series was attracting 10.3 million listeners a week, and Gerald Mohr had been named Most Popular Male Actor by Radio and Television magazine.
Tumblr media
Like Dashiell Hammett and The Adventures of Sam Spade, Chandler’s name was all over the show (the broadcasts were billed as coming “from the pen of Raymond Chandler”), but the author was not involved in the actual scripts or broadcast. He did, however, have praise for the show’s star, declaring “Gerald Mohr’s voice is absolutely tops. A voice like Gerald Mohr’s gave you a personality which you fill out according to your fancy.” Mohr’s wasn’t the only strong voice; he was backed up each week by members of Macdonnell’s repertory company of actors, including John Dehner, Virginia Gregg, Jeff Corey, Larry Dobkin, Howard McNear, Parley Baer, Vivi Janiss, Georgia Ellis, and William Conrad. Many of those actors would join Macdonnell in Dodge City when he developed Gunsmoke, a program that grew out of CBS chairman William Paley’s request to Macdonnell for a “Philip Marlowe in the Old West.”
The Adventures of Philip Marlowe ran until September 29, 1950, and Mohr starred in every episode except for one. Future Gunsmoke US Marshal and TV private eye William Conrad played Marlowe in the April 11, 1950 episode “The Anniversary Gift” when Mohr was under the weather. The show was revived for a brief run in July 1951, with Mohr slipping back into the role of Marlowe as if he’d never left it. He hadn’t been out of the detective game in the interim; in early 1951, Mohr had a four-episode stint as Archie Goodwin opposite Sydney Greenstreet on NBC’s The New Adventures of Nero Wolfe. Philip Marlowe left the airwaves the same way he arrived on them: as a summer replacement series. This time, Marlowe kept the time slot warm for Hopalong Cassidy.
Nearly all the 114-episode Mohr series has survived in good condition, giving today’s fans a chance to thrill to the rough and tumble exploits of Philip Marlowe as radio audiences did from 1948 to 1951.

The Deviance of Two English Gentlemen Chapter Three
Chapter Title: The Unyielding Interim
Fandom: Sherlock Holmes (Ritchie films)/Sherlock Holmes & Related Fandoms Pairing: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson, Mary Morstan/John Watson Characters: Sherlock Holmes, John Watson, Mary Morstan Rating: Teen and Up Status: Incomplete, chapters are posted weekly Word Count: 1514 for this chapter, 4291 for the entire work thus far Summary: Set post Game of Shadows. When Sherlock Holmes is given a case by none other than Mrs. Watson, he has no idea that he cannot fix the unsolvable for the couple. Intimate truths are exposed in the process, leaving all three irrevocably changed. Tags: Case Fic, Unresolved Emotional Tension, Secrets, Bickering Notes: The entire work can be read here on ao3. You can also read chapter one here and chapter two here. Note that this is not Brit-picked, but I tried my best.
Story:
The next two weeks passed in such an odd succession that Holmes began to wonder whether he was indulging too much in the comfort of his seven percent solution. After that first night, Watson had not come down for many hours, not until late afternoon, all dressed in clothes appropriated from Holmes’ wardrobe, though neither of them addressed the subject. He had given a curt thanks and goodbye before departing.
The next time Watson deigned it worthy of his time to visit, Holmes had just finished conducting his experiment on the potency of various chloroform formulas. When Watson burst into his rooms, unannounced, he scolded Holmes for not leaving the flat in a span of time which had lasted four days apparently. In a fit of frustration, Watson left in search of food, insisting Holmes was going to “lose half a stone at this rate” if he continued in his totally reasonable, reclusive behaviours. Later, they chatted over dinner about the day’s newspaper, Holmes’ findings in the last seventy-two hours of intense dedication to the differences between trichloromethane and ether while Watson contributed an anecdote here or there about an unruly patient in the clinic.
They did not talk about Mary. They also did not speak of Watson’s domestic, precipitating him to storm off and drown his sorrows in cheap ale. Holmes had suspicions, however, even if he didn’t voice them.
One possibility was infidelity. “Three continents Watson” would imply to a simpleton that he was dissatisfied in marriage, but Holmes knew his Watson better. A man as loyal as he, who followed Holmes into the thoroughfare of the European criminal underworld with revolver in hand and no questions asked, would not be a husband who would lie with another woman. Especially not when Watson was clearly enamored by his Mary’s charms and said wife was understandably in love with Watson, a phenomenon Holmes could not explain but inherently knew was truth.
The second situation was problems with money, hypothetically. For some unknown reason, Watson had adopted a rather Draconian ideal of finances and women’s place within that (being nonexistent) much to Holmes’ chagrin, particularly as he knew undoubtedly Mrs. Watson would manage transactions far better than that gambling boy. But for such a violent reaction to occur those six nights ago, when Holmes had repeatedly criticized Watson’s handling of his funds in the past, this hypothetical seemed, just as the previous one, highly unlikely.
The third scenario Holmes could not feasibly wrap his head around without feeling prone and ill inside. Simply put, the consummation of marriage...was known to have its difficulties. The desired product of a match between man and wife as desired by a Christian God would only solidify the reality of Watson’s world apart from Holmes’ own isolated one, never again to amalgamate together but at short, infrequent intervals. If this were really the case though, some kind of disagreement had brewed between the Watsons, interrupting idyllic sentiment leftover from honeymoon bliss. The baseness of sex could very well have that effect on a standard English gentleman and lady.
Watson’s eyes had been upon him for some time, he could tell. He met his friend’s gaze head-on, finding concern and something else indescribable mingled in between. Upon reflection, he should make a study of Watson’s eyes, if nothing else than for his private records.
“You haven’t spoken in two hours,” Watson remarked casually.
Holmes blinked rapidly, readjusting to the settings. Seated in his chair, tea gone cold. Disposed of his waistcoat, Watson slouched in what was once his designated chair, brown suspenders rolling off his shoulders slowly but surely, his top button undone. Thoroughly distracting. Holmes sniffed the air.
“Have you been smoking?” He inquired, recognizing the scent as that of a Cuban cigar circa 1889, approximately.
“Yes, I thought it might make you more alert. I fear it may have made you fall deeper into that stupor of yours you just came out of,” Watson admitted as his fingers idly tapped against the cigar resting in the ashtray on the table. “What has addled your brain so?”
“Watson, you know my methods. My periods of introspection provide clarity to my work. My thoughts are in perfect working order.”
“Mhmm,” he hummed back. After straightening his braces, Watson began to loop his arms through his coat previously draped across the back of his chair. “Perhaps I should leave you to your thoughts, in that case.”
“Back home again?” Holmes mused.
Watson, as ever, corrected him. “To Mary.”
Perhaps the lovers’ quarrel was not as serious as he supposed at all. Nonetheless, he felt he had to offer: “My door is always open.”
An affirming smile answered him with a quality of sadness to it, the only thing preceding Watson’s familiar tread on Baker Street.
Another week was to be endured before Watson’s presence graced him once again. In this particular instance, Watson seemed more at ease. He suggested to Holmes that they go for a stroll in the city. Watson always liked it when Holmes would make and share observations of passersbys, one of their favourite activities to engage in from the earliest point in their friendship. If Holmes himself was in worse spirits he would have refused such a triviality, but knowing it might help his friend, he acquiesced cordially to the offer, fortunate enough to still spend time with the man as he was.
There was nothing out of the ordinary at first. An oversized clerk bumbled down Manchester Street obviously having taken too late a lunch break; an older American couple conversed loudly about the spectacles and filth of London to distract from the all too personal topic of the wife’s dying father; a paperboy shouted the newest headlines, limping as he did so due to a factory accident which likely cracked most of the bones in his left foot that never healed properly. Watson smiled along to most of these descriptions but frowned at the last, almost bent on offering his services to the boy, but by Holmes’ observations the accident had occurred years ago and no doctor’s attention would help him now.
At last, they reached Hyde Park, a perfect spot for observation of both animals and nature alike. As it was a Sunday, many families were out and about, relieved to send their children to attend to their own amusements. Their shrill cries and laughter was certainly no symphony to Holmes, but Watson appeared slightly perturbed, glancing at his fob-watch for the time and requesting that perhaps they roam somewhere else. Holmes himself was growing tired of this charade his friend was putting on and scoffed loudly.
“Really, you could just tell me that you prefer the company of your wife to my own, and we’d be done with it,” he ground out, kicking his one boot against the pavement as he did so.
“What?” Watson had the audacity to appear flummoxed. His attempts at treating Holmes with decency were driving the detective mad.
“I know you’re inventing excuses to be around me now that you’re married and yet still feel obligated to maintain our partner—pardon me, friendship,” explained Holmes, in a manner not unlike when he told Lestrade off for one of his idiotic theories. “But you’re bored because there are no cases for me to amuse you with, so you’re regretting the whole outing. I’d prefer that you just be honest with me instead of relying on me to deduce it for the both of us.”
He refused to look Watson in the eye after his statement and proceeded down the footpath without his friend in tow. It thus surprised him as he was about to turn out of the park when running footfalls made their distinct approach. Watson’s all too familiar ragged breaths were there behind Holmes, on his neck, and then he was being spun around by his shoulders, Watson having a firm grip on both his arms and a dazzling intensity in his gaze.
“For once Holmes you have no idea what you’re driving at, but my problems with Mary actually have nothing to do with you this time. I can’t explain. It wouldn’t be right to you or Mary—”
“Sirs!” The voice of a young lady, no older than in her twenties with a crying babe in her arms. “Please, if you’ve anything to spare good sirs, my child’s life be saved. You’re honorable gentlemen, fathers? Think of the poor children, gentlemen.”
Damn her timing, just as he was getting something out of Watson. Though much as Watson’s readers of The Strand might have insisted otherwise, he was not heartless.
“3 shillings, madam,” he said as he withdrew the change from his pocket into her grateful outstretched hand, pins and pricks visible on her fingertips. A factory seamstress then, paid a pittance for her work.
She issued great thanks, politely scurrying away in the opposite direction from whence they came. He likely would have mused more on her upbringing, physicality and motivations too, had Watson not suddenly fallen out of consciousness into his arms, helpless as a babe.

Excerpt:
“You’re fucking brilliant.”
“Huh?” Ezra asks absentmindedly, paying more attention to the flame under his pan than to my compliment. “What’d you say?”
“I said you’re brilliant.” I hold up the iPad I’m using to read his manuscript. “Your book, the YLA story, is incredible, Ez.”
“Oh. Thanks.” He flashes me a smile and then goes back to his French toast. “The key to getting this right is the milk-to-bread ratio.”
I hop off the counter and walk over to stand beside him at the stove. “Would you forget about your French toast for a minute and listen to me?”
“But it’s stuffed French toast.” He takes the pan off the burner and pulls me into his arms. “And I could listen to you all day. What were you saying? Something about me being a handsome, sexy genius?”
“Um…those weren’t my exact words.” I laugh up at him.
“I could have sworn that’s what you said, and I’m never wrong.” He slides his hands over my ass in a pair of his boxer shorts. “Some even say I’m fucking brilliant.”
“They probably just like your big dick,” I whisper and blink up at him as innocently as I can manage.
“I get that a lot.” He drops a kiss on my head and turns back to his French toast. I lean down to rest an elbow on the counter and watch him work.
“A lot?” I ask teasingly. “Have there been a lot?”
He pauses mid-toast-flip and slants me a glance. “Are you asking how many people I’ve had sex with?”
“I mean, it’s none of my business. If you don’t want to—”
“Eight.”
Eight?
Lord above, only eight?!
“Oh.” I straighten and rest my hip against the counter. “What a, um, single-digit number that is.”
“What about you?”
What about me? I’m tabulating years of hook-ups, one-night stands, fuck bois and carrying the one.
“If you don’t want to,” he says, cracking an egg into a bowl, “it’s fine. I don’t care how many people—”
“I don’t know.”
He glances up from whisking eggs, a small frown puckering his dark brows. “You don’t know what?”
“My number. I don’t know how many people I’ve been with.”
He resumes whisking, his frown clearing. “Oh.”
The whisking eggs and whirring refrigerator are the only sounds in the kitchen. I’ve never been embarrassed by my choices. I enjoy sex. I’ve had it with a lot of people. People I really liked…or tolerated…but didn’t want to commit to. I’ve always been safe and never mean about it. I was upfront, and when someone wanted more, I let them know “more” wasn’t an option.
“I just never…” I cross my arms over my stomach, fold one bare foot over the other. “I haven’t been interested in committed relationships. There hasn’t been anyone I wanted that with.”
“Tru.” He stops whisking and gives me the full impact of his undivided attention. His eyes are placid blue. No shadows or undercurrents. “I don’t care.” Ezra pushes the bowl aside and faces me. “But there is something I feel like we should be clear on regarding how you’ve handled sex in the past.”
Here we go.
“You’ve never wanted to commit before,” he says.
“Right. I’ve never wanted any strings attached.”
“I know I said we could be just sex, no emotional attachments.” He shoves his hands in his pockets. “But I feel like I have to be honest with you. Having you back in my life has been…it’s been exactly what I need, and what I felt last night… I’ve never felt that way before.”
I’m not even sure my heart is beating, but it also feels like there’s a tumult in my chest. “What are you saying, Ez?”
His mouth flattens into a hard line and his jaw hardens to stone. “I want strings.”
“Y-you do?”
“I want strings.” He links our fingers, strokes his thumb across my palm. “Ropes, if necessary. I want anything that keeps you with me and me with you and tells everyone else don’t even think about it.”
I’m stunned and incredibly turned on, but that doesn’t take much where Ezra’s concerned.
“You…you do?” I ask faintly…again.
“I wouldn’t do well sharing you.”

My Review!
5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
My #1 Book Of The Year!
Wow! This is a phenomenal story! It is emotional, empowering and romantic as he!!. A second chance, passionate, lyrical romance that takes your breath away. Kennedy Ryan never ceases to deliver something completely unique, completely addictive and completely mind-blowing. I was utterly mesmerized.
I AM SO IN LOVE WITH THIS BOOK! So undeniably, unequivocally, irrevocably in love with this book. Everything about the storyline and the characters captivated me. Kimba and Ezra are delicious together. Their personalities, their conversations, their chemistry...my my my! I was a goner, charmed beyond words. And gosh did I ever fall in love. This had ALL THE THINGS I live for in a romance and much much MORE.
Great love stories have one thing in common: the author’s exquisite ability at storytelling. QUEEN MOVE transforms from a simple love story to one that enraptures readers with it’s emotion, conviction, and vitality. Beautifully penned this book is a insta-must read and one you won’t be able to put down. I will never forget Kimba and Ezra’s story. This is my new #1 Book of the Year!
I received a early copy in exchange for a honest review.

Prologue
Kimba
Two Years Before Present
Is there anything sadder than a daddy’s girl at her father’s funeral?
My mother’s quiet sniffs a few seats down give me the answer.
A grieving widow.
“He was a good man,” someone in the long line of mourners offering condolences whispers to her.
Mama’s head bobs with a tearful nod. In this day and age, she still wears a pillbox hat and veil. It’s black and chic like Mama, channeling tragic Jackie Kennedy or Coretta Scott King. My father was not just a good man. He was a great man, and everyone should know he leaves behind a widow, grieving deeply, but ever-fly. I squeeze the funeral program between my fingers, glaring at the printed words.
Joseph Allen leaves behind a wife, Janetta, three children, Kayla, Keith and Kimba, and six grandchildren.
He leaves behind.
Daddy’s gone, and I don’t know how to live in a world my father does not inhabit. The casket is draped with sweet-smelling flowers in the center of the funeral tent. When we leave the cemetery, it…he will be lowered into the ground with unfathomable finality, separated from us by white satin lining, six feet of dirt and eternity.
Kayla, my older sister, sobs softly at the end of our family’s row. Her four children watch her carefully, probably unused to seeing their unshakeable mother shaken and reduced to tears. Even I’d forgotten how she looks when she cries—like she’s mad at the wetness streaking her cheeks, resentful of any sign of weakness.
It’s not weak to cry, Daddy used to say. It’s human.
“But doesn’t the Bible say even the rocks will cry out?” I’d challenged him when I was young, loving that something from Sunday school took. “So maybe tears aren’t just for humans.”
“You’re getting too smart for your britches, little girl,” he’d said, but the deep affection in his eyes when he kissed me told me he was pleased. He liked that I asked questions and taught me to never accept bullshit at face value.
I miss you, Daddy.
Not even a week since his heart attack, and I already miss him so much.
Humanity blurs my vision, wet and hot and stinging my eyes. I want this to be over. The flowers, the well-dressed mourners, the news cameras stationed at a distance they probably deem respectful. I just want to go to the house where my parents raised us, retreat to Daddy’s study and find the stash of cigars that only he and I knew about.
Don’t tell your mother, he used to whisper conspiratorially. This will be our little secret.
Mama hated the smell of cigars in the house.
“Tru.”
Who would call me by that name? Now, when the only people who use it, my family, are all preoccupied with their own pain? A tall man stands in front of me, his thick, dark brows bunched with sympathy. I don’t know him. I would remember a man like this, who stands strong like an oak tree. A well-tailored suit molds his powerful shoulders. Dark brown, not quite black, hair is cut ruthlessly short, but hints at waves if given the chance to grow. His prominent nose makes itself known above the full, finely sculpted lips below. His eyes are shockingly vivid—so deep a blue they’re almost the color of African violets against skin like bronze bathed in sunlight. No, a man like him you’d never forget. Something niggles at my memory, tugs at my senses. I’d never forget a man who looked like this, a man with eyes like that…but what about a boy?
“Ezra?” I croak, disbelief and uncertainty mingling in the name I haven’t uttered in years.
It can’t be.
But it is.
Keep Going!

Synopsis
The boy who always felt like mine is now the man I can't have…
Dig a little and you'll find photos of me in the bathtub with Ezra Stern.
Get your mind out of the gutter. We were six months old.
Pry and one of us might confess we saved our first kiss for each other.
The most clumsy, wet, sloppy . . . spectacular thirty seconds of my adolescence.
Get into our business and you'll see two families, closer than blood, torn apart in an instant.
Twenty years later, my "awkward duckling" best friend from childhood,
the boy no one noticed, is a man no one can ignore.
Finer. Fiercer. Smarter.
Taken.
Tell me it's wrong.
Tell me the boy who always felt like mine is now the man I can’t have.
When we find each other again, everything stands in our way--secrets, lies, promises.
But we didn't come this far to give up now.
And I know just the move to make if I want to make him mine.

I V Y.
   (noun).  |ˈīvē |
a woody evergreen Eurasian climbing plant, typically having shiny, dark green five-pointed leaves
NAME: clover maxwell
AGE: twenty-two
PRONOUNS: she/her
OCCUPATION: socialite / heiress
SECRET: she seduced her mother’s fiancee out of spite for her parents divorce.
FC: nicola peltz
R E L A T I O N S H I P with S T E L L A
they were a year apart, but that didn’t stop them from wreaking havoc on the UES in their younger years together. clover was the elder of the two, think queen b & little j – but both a hefty instagram following for high schoolers & a tad more vicious. as per usual, there are only a handful of girls considered to become a project; & stella was clover’s favorite, no one really seemed to understand how detached you had to be except her. so clover showed her the ropes upon proving her loyalty; starting with scheming, ending with blackmail, & everything in between. it was almost scary how quickly she picked up each act & developed it to her own tastes, definitely impressive to say the least. after graduating high school and about a year in while attending colombia, clover’s partying really started picking up. she & stella didn’t speak nearly as often, but they caught up every once in a while; exchanging gossip & things of the like. her sudden disappearance didn’t surprise clover in the slightest; although when her parents starting searching for her, it left the older blonde with some discomfort. & when she came back with a loaded gun, clover didn’t know what to think; having used her own tactics against her, she had no choice but to comply with the girl’s requests. sure, her drug abuse & alcohol induced adventures flooded the tabloids almost weekly; but her sexual history & personal relationships never seemed as interesting to them & she wanted to keep it that way. if her father ever found out what she did to her mother, he would cut her off quicker than she could blink & hand over the company to her brother.
I V Y is currently closed.        BIOGRAPHY FOUND UNDER THE CUT.
daughter of alice walton & jeffery maxwell, interior decorating extraordinaire and one of california’s most pretentious & opulent CEOs in communications technology. on paper they’re the ideal match, the perfect couple for such an extravagant lifestyle, and yet they lasted only a decade together due to some disloyal decisions; whether it was choosing his business over time with his family or the younger, more attentive ‘pool boy’ that swayed her.  the one good thing that came from their marriage (that they would both agree on) were their two beautiful children. before clover came carter, their oldest & (obviously) only boy, & up until he was eight, he held the title of top dog in their house. & then, their little girl was born, & no one could even come close to getting as much love as her father had to give to her. it was clear she was the favorite, at least on her father’s side, & that brought a lot of tension between the siblings; always fighting over the top spot in his heart. hell, even her mother – his WIFE couldn’t get half the love he showered clover with, & that’s probably what sparked the unstable relationship she shared with her mother, a lot of her vices, and what pushed her mother in the direction of a divorce; she always had to be the center of attention, you know? not even her daughter would outdo her. it was right before clover was about to start high school that her father had started spending more & more time in new york (he’d started off just going weekends; which turned into weeks). carter had been graduated & off to college, & unbeknownst to the two of them, their parents divorce was in it’s early stages at the time.  when she was sixteen, their parents had officially split – all t’s were crossed & i’s dotted. this shook clover to the core, & she still has a hard time accepting her mother’s choice to file for divorce; hence their even rockier relationship since things were signed & dated. alice ended up moving to upstate CA once things were finalized. it was about a week prior to her move that she actually told her children of her affair, and it was in that moment clover decided she was going to get back at her mother for breaking them all apart over some random guy.  jeffery decided that clover needed a better education & to be away from her mother, though he’d never tell her that part. constance billard was where his mother attended, and her mother, etc. therefore it made the perfect place for his little girl. he’d already bought a place in the city the summer before her freshman year, & they flew out together in august. she would visit cali during holidays / breaks & sometimes weekends up until she was eighteen & graduated.  in her pretty little blonde head, the words ‘princess’ & ‘heiress’ are one in the same. daddy pays for everything, & also made for a great kick-starter when it came to a few modeling opportunities & gala appearances. the saying,  ‘like father like daughter’ heavily applies when it comes to the maxwell charm, thus leading to more options down the road; though she’s yet to actually settle down & make something of herself, instead choosing to be a party hardy among other ‘advantages’ that come with the elite status that usually end up in the tabloids the next day.  whether she wants it or not, she eventually will own half of her father’s business, the other half will (obviously) go to her brother, as far as right now anyway. it wouldn’t be unlikely for her father to change his mind & have them fight over it. but if not, what she ends up doing with her half when the time comes is ultimately up to her, & while she’s not really into the whole ‘real work’ thing, the last thing she’d do is give her half to carter. then he’d be winning / would have won & she can’t have that.
PERSONALITY:
she is absolutely alluring. whether you love or hate her, you can’t help but click on the snapchat discover’s headlines or pick up people ( star, instyle ) magazine to see what she’s up to now. they all tell you the same things, about her ‘life’ & every outing, who she went out with last night & what she wore; it’s like you know so much about her but nothing about her at the same time, and for some reason, you subconsciously want more.  the maxwell charm – a gene that is graciously gifted to each generation of their complicated family tree. it never fails to get you just what you want or right where you need to be, and clover takes full advantage of this trait; so much so it could almost be considered manipulation. the way she carries herself & goes about life only adds to it, as she lives as freely as she loves many. clo is a very affectionate person (on a good day), always one to hug & kiss you hello / goodbye / whenever she feels like it. it’s mostly platonic love – though some of her actions might lead you to think otherwise. & if one thing is certain, it’s that she definitely has the power to control an entire room with the light that draws you to her. she doesn’t have much of a filter, & anything that comes out of her mouth is usually the first thought that crosses her mind; whether or not that’s a good thing is at your discretion.  it’s once you get passed it all that you’ll see that destructive side to her you’ve heard whispers about. whether it be in family, friendships, lovers — whatever, clover will get what she wants, when she wants it & will do whatever it takes to get there even if it means hurting someone she really cares about or a complete stranger; if it means hurting herself in the process or jeopardizes somebody else’s life or future. she can also seem emotionally detached a lot of the time, which also doesn’t help when it comes to her decision making and relationships/friendships.  with all that wealth & no real consequences, it’s no wonder she probably thinks she’s better than you. some of the comments she makes can come off as put downs, but it’s really just her being honest & upfront with her thoughts & feelings about whatever. of course there are times when she means to bring you down, make you feel really bad because she’s bored or because a line was crossed. it really depends on the day. & those who’ve experienced this side of her will be the first to tell you just how big of a bitch clover actually is.  in regards to sexuality, clover loves as freely as she lives. sex was just sex, & the only time it wasn’t was when it was with the right person; & as far as she’s concerned, they didn’t exist. she just loves good looking people because she is good looking, so it’s only right to surround herself with such.

E-26 Yoshida Taisei - Character Profile
Howdie folks. Yes, it's been ages since my last Profile, or post for that matter, but when work gets more and more hectic, especially if your project is a bottomless pit of dysfunction and staff leave the team you're on, it really drains enthusiasm away from some of one's hobbies. Anyway, like with Muramatsu, I liked how Matsui fleshed out Yoshida as the resident mechanic, and the way he synchronises with some of his other classmates too. Also, please note the different disclaimer from usual for the remaining 3 Profiles
The Baidu forumer from before hadn't posted any profiles beyond Yada's, so this time, main credits for scans of Yoshida's profile go to young-il-long-kiyoshi Screenshots of Yoshida's profile are in the following link:
Yoshida's profile
Furthermore, this time it's a direct Japanese -> English translation by me, but nonetheless, while I have endeavoured to keep things as accurate as possible, not everything may be successfully conveyed across
E-26 Yoshida Taisei (吉田 大成) – risking his life for his comrades, Class E’s shocktrooper
“You can blow away anything you don’t like with speed!!"
Description
A muscle head who likes to rush in, think later. As someone who is greatly considerate of his friends and comrades, he is willing to rely on students outside of the Terasaka Group as well.
A lover of bikes. While he’s certainly never rode on public roads, as a result of polishing his skills on premise (of his family shop), his riding technique can put professionals to shame.
He and Muramatsu are practically harmonised. No matter how difficult the situation gets, it is their creed to tackle it vigorously.
Code Name: Homebase (ホームベース), Sugino’s idea
This is probably a symptom of his occupation (as a baseball player), but every time he sees Yoshida he feels like he wants to step on him. Not out of anger or for any particular reason of course.
(TN: for those how hadn’t noticed it before, yours truly included, the contours of Yoshida’s face resemble a home plate from a baseball field)
Birthday: August 19th
Height: 173cm
Weight: 63kg
Blood Type: O
Favourite Subject: Technology
Worst Subject: English
Interests and special skills: Tinkering vehicles in general
Past Club: Railroad Research Society
Treasured Item(s): a Suzuki GSX 1300R Hayabusa (not yet taken onto public roads yet)
Favourite Food: Monster Energy (the drink)
Bento or Snacks: Snacks
Election Headline (from the 1st Popularity Poll): Kamikaze Striker Taisei
(TN: The phrase here, 特攻の大成, is a reference to Saki Hiroto’s work Legend of the Gale: Kamikaze Striker Taku, a Bosozoku/Yankee-themed manga that was serialised from 1991 to 1997 in Weekly Shonen Magazine, filled with lots of motorcycles too)
From Korosensei, Announcement of Results from the Periodic Exams (Main 5 subjects) (credits to young-il-long-kiyoshi)
In a word, his art and technology grades are magnificent! The embodiment of "what one likes, one will do well". Maths is useful when tinkering with bikes as well, so let's do our best together!
1st Trimester Mid-Terms: 265 points (140th place)

Karasuma’s Assassination Aptitude (graded on a scale of 6)
Karasuma is captivated by Yoshida’s close combat style, the way he leverages his blessed physique like a human bullet. It appears his training has helped him excel at being alert of his surroundings, to the point that he can perceive the moments right before he touches his back from behind and the likes. He looks forward to his progress.
- His tackles that make full use of his body’s strengths are effective even against sturdy foreign opponents - During the Cops and Robbers game, Yoshida was able to sense Karasuma’s presence, when many students failed to do the same until he touched them. Is he an esper!?
Strategy/Planning: 2
Commanding/Leadership: 2
Execution (Ability to carry out plans): 5
Technique (Traps, weapons, preparations, etc): 5
Scouting/Intelligence Gathering: 3
Politics/Negotiations: 2
B*tch-sensei’s Fashion Check (credits to young-il-long-kiyoshi)
Seriously, he gives the vibe of a no-good middle school brat. Still, the way his fashion sense matches up with his age and stature isn't bad at all, right? From here onwards, as he becomes more and more experienced with the world, I expect that his tastes will continue to refine themselves.
School Uniform
Yoshida also does without a necktie. At 15 years old, he's probably at an age where he's not going to steal bikes nor want to tie somebody up.
(TN: Matsui is probably just jesting here)
Street Clothes
The only one within the Terasaka Group to dress himself smartly. Like with bike customs, clothes are a source of worry for what to spend his money on.
Character Relationships
- Nakamura Rio (addressed as Nakamura) -
The former delinquent Nakamura displays an interest in bikes to Yoshida simply because it looks refreshing, no ill intentions whatsoever. When Terasaka wrecked the bike that Korosensei had poured his heart into, both Yoshida and Nakamura criticised him. Nakamura often badgers him to "give me a ride!", but in truth Yoshida is feeling embarrassed, possibly due to the thought of going for a ride with a girl sitting behind his back.
- Kanzaki Yukiko (addressed as Kanzaki) -
The Terasaka Group usually carry an arrogant air around them, but in Yoshida’s case, it’s only when he turns to the seat on his left (ie Kanzaki’s desk) that his expression softens up.
- Hazama Kirara (addressed as Hazama) -
Hazama notices that Yoshida softens around Kanzaki, wearing a broad grin as she watches him from behind (she’s seated to his bottom-left). She’s sensitive when it comes to people’s feelings, and is secretly amused at the framework of relationships within the classroom.
- Mimura Kouki (addressed as Mimura) -
At first he made fun of his air guitar, but after watching a performance in secret and seeing his overflowing fearlessness, as well as his immeasurable passion and energy, his gaze towards him has turned into one of respect.
- Takebayashi Koutarou (addressed as Takebayashi) -
From the case of the maid café, Yoshida thought Takebayashi was inadvertently amazing for creating such a weakness out of Terasaka, and frankly he feels he’s stronger than anyone else in the class.
- Sugaya Sousuke (addressed as Sugaya) -
Every day Yoshida solicits Sugaya, asking him that when he inherits his bike shop someday, whether he can count on him to handle the painting for his customs.
- Horibe Itona (addressed as Itona) -
They’re the Class E technology squad. Yoshida handles the structure side of things, and with Itona being in charge of the circuitry, in most cases the results are compatible. Their teamwork are also superb.
Matsui-sensei’s Exclusive Behind the Scenes Data
Yoshida got to know his partners in crime Terasaka and Muramatsu in their first and second years of middle school respectively. Together with Muramatsu, their roles are often to rush in straight ahead but get hurt in the process. However, their courage to do such things comes from their understanding of each other's toughness and from sizing up their opponents' strength. The suicidal operations that they conducted under this courage never fails to earn the class' gratitude.
The three of them have an inseparable relationship that can't be broken even if they tried. The teamwork between the Terasaka Group is something that everyone acknowledges.
He's been making plans with Muramatsu on a ramen shop where you can see bikes, possibly even serving food on them. (TN: I'm really unsure about this last part)
Yoshida firmly focuses on his future with a sense of excitement. His fellowship with Muramatsu is probably going to be something that'll last a lifetime.

Twenty years later, my "awkward duckling" best friend from childhood, the boy no one noticed, is a man no one can ignore.
Finer. Fiercer. Smarter. Taken.
Tell me it's wrong. Tell me the boy who always felt like mine is now the man I can’t have. When we find each other again, everything stands in our way--secrets, lies, promises. But we didn't come this far to give up now. And I know just the move to make if I want to make him mine.

2018 Summer Movie Preview: 10 Films We're Excited About
With "Avengers: Infinity War" skyrocketing towards approximately a trillion dollars at the box office, the summer movie season has commenced. For film lovers, it's a weekly serving of mega meals, often with huge casts and even larger special effects, all fighting for our attention.
To cut through the massive list of films headed to a multiplex or art house near you, we're sharing the top ten most enticing movies on the horizon (with all release dates scheduled to change).
There are also some honorable mentions for the movies that I can't wait for a wider audience to see. That includes Bo Burnham's hilarious coming of age story "Eighth Grade," Lauren Greenfield's in-depth and personal documentary about excess, "Generation Wealth," Nancy Choe's disturbing character piece and (excellent star vehicle for Andrea Riseborough), "Nancy," and Joseph Kahn's molotov cocktail of a rap battle movie, "Bodied."
Below is a list of our ten most anticipated titles in what promises to be a very busy summer. We'll be covering these films among many more at RogerEbert.com, so be sure to check back for our reviews.
youtube
10. "Solo: A Star Wars Story"
Whether you want to believe the stories behind the scenes or not (including the one about Alden Ehrenreich needing an acting coach on set), the changing of the directors from Phil Lord & Chris Miller to Ron Howard has always left me with plenty skepticism, if for the fact that the previous directors have a more distinct visual style, while the other seems to be more of a workman. But, it's "Star Wars," so of course we'll be seeing it once, if not twice. At the very least, maybe if the movie turns out to be not so good, we can try to get a Lando Calrissian movie starring Donald Glover instead. (May 25)
youtube
9. "The Spy Who Dumped Me"
Kate McKinnon and Mila Kunis star in this comedy directed by Susanna Fogel, who also co-wrote the script. Like with the other pairings on this list, that casting seems like it could bring some great work out of the underrated Kunis and McKinnon, who is working her way towards headlining a comedy of her own. (August 3)
youtube
8. "Under the Silver Lake"
David Robert Mitchell made quite a splash with his previous horror movie, "It Follows," and now in his third film "Under the Silver Lake" has a lot of anticipation. His Los Angeles noir, with a running time of about 140 minutes, sounds all the more curious, along with its casting of Andrew Garfield and Riley Keough. We'll know a bit more about this one when it soon plays at the Cannes Film Festival, one of the few American films competing this year. (June 22)
youtube
7. "Hereditary"
This movie could very well be the horror hit of the summer, especially if the buzz that followed it from last January's Sundance is right. I remember the shattered reactions of those who saw the film the night of its premiere, and I've been very curious about this movie's potential for the scary and the emotional. Plus, there has been a lot of great word about Toni Collette's performance. Coming from the people who made "The Witch" a cool horror movie, "Hereditary" has me ready to be scared. (June 8)
youtube
6. "Sorry to Bother You"
I missed this Sundance hit from writer/director Boots Riley when it premiered at the festival, but I'm eager to see what the buzz is about. Lakeith Stanfield stars in the movie (set in "an alternate present-day" version of Oakland) as a man who finds a secret to success. The premise is a strong-enough hook, as complemented with a very intriguing cast that includes Tessa Thompson, Armie Hammer, Terry Crews, David Cross, Steven Yeun, Patton Oswalt and more. (July 6)
youtube
5. "Action Point"
Summer is a great time for a studio comedy, but it doesn't look like "Action Point" will have any immediate competitors. Based off a true amusement park that had plenty of engineering problems in real life, "Action Point" looks to bring back that inclusive spirit of the "Jackass" movies, at least with the very specific casting of Johnny Knoxville, who is bound to have pain inflicted on him in numerous ways. While I can only imagine what his insurance deal is for such a movie, I'm very excited at a summer movie about an amusement park that looks like it simply wants to be an amusement park. (June 1)
youtube
4. "Ocean's 8"
The best way to bring the "Ocean's" brand of heists is with star power, and why not some new faces? "The Hunger Games" director Gary Ross has co-written a story that leads to an all-star lineup of charismatic women, including Cate Blanchett, Rihanna, Sandra Bullock, Akwafina, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway and more. Just as Steven Soderbergh's "Ocean's" movies were parties, this one has me hoping it's a blast. (June 8)
youtube
3. "Uncle Drew"
There's a little nostalgia behind my anticipation for "Uncle Drew," especially how the sports comedy will bring back athletes to jokey roles on the silver screen, in a way that we haven't seen in years. Superstars Kyrie Irving, Shaq, Chris Webber, Reggie Miller, Nate Robinson, and Lisa Leslie are going to wear old-age makeup while playing basketball, a type of cartoonish gag that I hope works as well as it sounds. Added to the mix is "Get Out" scene-steal Lil Rel Howery, sharing the screen with "Girls Trip" scene-stealer Tiffany Haddish. (June 29)
2. "BlacKkKlansman"
Spike Lee just released the theatrical adaptation "Pass Over," but will soon be adding a new title to his illustrious filmography, "BlacKkKlansman." Produced by "Get Out" writer/director Jordan Peele, this film has incredible promise given its premise (about a black man who infiltrated the KKK, a true story) and the way that it looks ready to entire our country's current discussion about race. (August 10)
youtube
1. "Crazy Rich Asians"
It seems fitting that this bonanza of a summer movie season would be capped off with a wedding, especially one that promises lots of extravagance and all-star talent. Jon Chu directs the highly-anticipated film adaptation of Kevin Kwan's novel "Crazy Rich Asians," starring Constance Wu, Michelle Yeoh, Henry Golding, Gemma Chan, Akwafina, Ken Jeong, Jimmy O. Yang, Harry Shum Jr. and more. The movie already has some great buzz after screening at the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival, which also gives the promise that the film is primed for a lot of cultural discussion. It's also very exciting, however disheartening to point out, that this is the first Western-produced film using an exclusively Asian cast in over two decades. It looks like "Crazy Rich Asians" will give us plenty to celebrate.

Prologue
