Upon These Wings Ch. 9: Hints and Clues

I’d cried myself into exhaustion by the time night fell. My nest was so dark I could only make out the shapes of things and still I could not sleep. Dark had tried calling me down once, but he quickly gave up.

Even though I’d been up there for hours, the anger and hurt still clenched in my stomach. I thought they were my friends, finally, but they didn’t seem to want to be. It wasn’t fair. Here were the only two people who had any idea what I’d really gone through, who were just as trapped here as I was, and yet I was so incredibly isolated from them. And now Dark was trying to alienate me from my project team. My relationship with most of them was polite at least, but what about Jada? I liked her, and I thought she liked me. If Dark was right, she was ignorant at best, playing me at worst.

I hated how utterly alone I was.

The keypad’s faint beeping snapped me from my thoughts. I sat up as the door swung open. Jakes’ silhouette remained burned into my eyes as the door clicked closed behind him, loud as a gunshot in the silence.

He was three steps into the room before I fully processed what was happened and scrambled to my feet, wings scattering pillows behind me in my haste. “J-Jakes!”

He paused. “Three,” he said curtly, “or is it Dawn now?”

Fear began creeping up my spine. Something was very wrong here.

That fear quickly turned to annoyance and then anger - Dark was sitting down there somewhere messing with my emotions, tamping down my rising fury and stoking the fear. He wasn’t even trying to be subtle. Infuriatingly, it worked, and despite my attempts to control myself I began slowly backing away from the director invading my room.

“Stop,” Jakes commanded, resuming his approach.

I continued my retreat. “What do you want?” I asked, and I hated that my voice trembled.

“Stop,” he insisted, suddenly taking several large strides and reaching for me.

I stumbled backward, tripped on a pillow, and fell through the glass into open air.

Starting off the new year with I think the most background heavy piece I've ever made! I think Rainwings and Nightwings would celebrate their traditional holidays together after the events of The brightest night. So this drawing is meant to show their cultures kind of blending together during a very joyful time. I remember talking about this concept with someone on tumblr a year ago but when I went back through my posts I couldn't for the life of me find it - so if your reading this, I remember you and this drawing stems from that conversation so thank you!

Okay so y’all know how canonically there’s a batburger with meals based on the bats and their enemies? Well…. I think it’d be funny and interesting if in every au, the menu’s slightly different.

Sure, they’ll still probably by the batburger, bat fries, robin nuggets, etc etc, but… but in a world where robin doesn’t exist, what would they be called? It’d be funny to see little details where the menu changes to reflect the names of the gotham vigilantes of that au

eg, in my au, To Brace Upon Benign Feathers, there’ll still be Batburgers, Batfries, Two-Face Sandwich, Killer Croque, and Ivy Salad (Not Poison), but I also think there’d be Shadow Shake, (a cookies and creme milkshake type of thing), Seraph Scones (Alfred refuses to eat them because they’re not “real scones”), Anubiscuits (literally just pop-eyes buscuits cos they’re dry enough for you to MEET anubis(the actual god)), and Wraith Wraps

Tl;dr: I think different au’s, especially reverse robins au’s, should have their own little batburger with a different menu

Been thinking a lot about the idea that a StarClan cat appearance becomes more fantasy-like based on the stories of them and how they're perceived by the living. So new spirits would look more like how they were alive while older spirits would look different.

While I do imagine they keep a "BE NOT AFRAID" normal-form that they can choose to appear as, yes. Over time, ancestral spirits begin to lose touch with their mortal forms and become abstractions.

Once, long ago, the Four Seasonal Gods resembled something very much like an ancient patron of Silverpelt. In comparison to Rock, Sol, Midnight, and Sharptooth, even the oldest spirit in StarClan (Gray Wing) is still an infant.

Partner and I are still designing the other founders but Gray Wing and Clear Sky are pretty solid.
