I installed an affinity tracking mod because I was curious about how the affinity system works, and apparently, there are certain thresholds for both NPCs and Pawns, though from what I've seen so far, I can't say I'm much wiser.
My boy Tris here, though, evolved from "Normal" state to "Love" (awww) during the short period I've been experimenting -- quite naturally, too, just from talking and hanging out and exchanging high fives, apparently. Which is nice.
Tumblr media
At 644 points, it seems my boy loves me but is too cool to blush about it? Legit. He has a calm demeanor, after all.
Tumblr media
At 655? Loves me, still too cool to blush about it (unless you count that tiniest flush on his cheeks but with his coloring, it's difficult to tell if that's affinity-related or not.)
Tumblr media
657, though? Now we're full-on in silly, blushy, drunken smile territory. Go figure.
Anyway, you think the Sphinx will accept him if I present him to her as my Most Beloved? Would be easier and more humane than to seal poor Glyndwr in a bottle and haul him up the mountain, at least. 🤭
Would also be interesting to explore the whole Arisen/Pawn dynamic a bit in writing because the themes of free will, servitude, personhood, and consent especially in relation to something as delicate as love are pretty heavy stuff. The premise of this game alone, I mean? Because due to the whole enforced amnesia thing, you don't really know who you were before them any more than they did before you. Hmm.

`Hey! I'm gonna do a few Homestuck gender + sexuality headcanon posts - starting with John Egbert! Some text about it all below the cut. For the most part, my hcs are super flexible so you'll see plenty of rambling about that in future, even if it contrasts my other work/RPs and such.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He/him.
So, you've probably noticed that John is trans and not June - using he/him, in my headcanon. This is because I honestly prefer transmasc John to transfem June in my own headcanon.
It's mostly because for me, I just see John more as a guy than any other gender. I've considered a lot of gender headcanons for him, but this is the only one I really vibe with - and honestly, all the discourse about June has thoroughly turned me off to headcanoning her as a whole. I'll make an exception for junedave/junedove/junedavekat/junedovekat content because that feels like a win though.
Also, I admit I prefer the view of Dad Egbert as being overly, smotheringly supportive of a son than unknowingly stifling a daughter. I also don't think John's friends would even know he's trans - I think he'd have the stereotypical trans experience of knowing since he was little, being dysphoric, and seeking some form of physical transition. I generally subscribe to the headcanon that dream selves can physically transition people, and I think that happened to him.
Regarding his sexuality...
I sometimes headcanon him as demiromantic/demisexual or asexual & biromantic/homoromantic, but I'm not very certain on that and wanted to keep this somewhat simple, so I left all that out - though, I do think those are excellent headcanons. If there's interest, I'll make more edits with those ideas though :)
Personally, I like readings of John as bi or gay, and I don't have a super strong preference either way. In terms of my Alternian Orientations Headcanons (https://www.tumblr.com/blog/view/gemalawashomestuck/688459979209998336?source=share), I tend to headcanon John as Quadranted ('standard' troll orientation) or Gray-Pale-Null (meaning he feels attraction in the pale quadrant very rarely, if at all). Hilariously, he's one of the relatively few characters I think would be considered somewhat 'standard' by troll norms. Unlike most humans, I think he would have a strong preference for quadranted relationships.
I'm very partial to bi/mspec readings of almost any character for reasons of personal bias, honestly, and I think bi John is fun...partly for "I'm not a homosexual, I'm a bisexual!" reasons. And I do like John's possible relationships with women - Johnvris and Johnrezi are the obvious ones (I'm not huge on Johnroxy) for me to point at but I admit Arajohn and Johnnep also have notable potential, if weird potential.
That said, I think gay John makes as much or more sense re: canon, with a few of the things John says about his feelings of attraction and his comical vehemence about not being gay. Like, iirc he even mentions not having been attracted to women before...while that could be read any number of ways, I think a gay John reading is particularly fun when combined with the earlier mentioned vehemence. Comedy moments, really. I also think that his possible romantic entanglements with girls translate really well into close platonic friendships (note: I could say the same about his relationships with guys, but I personally like mlm ships more for him).
In mlm ships for John, I'm a cherrypepsicola truther 'til the end as i tend to headcanon every character as dubiously polyamorous at least, but I'm also a johndavesprite and Dirkjohn/johnhal lover (I think John/any splinter is suuuper Of Interest). I think Erijohn and johntav hold some serious comedy potential as well though, it's fun! I'll always recommend shipping at least one crackship just because it's funny and I have a LOT of them.
Overall...my headcanons for John are pretty flexible and just for fun, for the most part :) there's a lot of room to play around.

Hey, it's Terezi! She's also easily the meanest and most effective troll, even Karkat mostly comes across as silly whereas Terezi immediately tries to hit where it hurts...and phases John, later. She's also the only one to successfully sabotage the kids' session, killing a John and a Dave, even if she really wasn't happy about the actual result of her actions. Rose, however, is not phased by Terezi's attempt at all, even as Terezi continually tries to fuck with her. Terezi says she wants to stay mad forever, and then ends up dating Dave for a while and having a flirt with John much later on (and if you count postcanon, a fling with Rose). She's as comically macky on the humans as Karkat is. But also, lucky us - Terezi's linear, unlike some trolls (looking at Karkat and Kanaya on this one).
It's kinda funny that the two trolls who have end-of-comic canon romances with humans (it's at least seemingly the case for Karkat, definitely for Kanaya) are also the two who troll them the weirdest. I also like how the moment she finds something in common with Rose, Terezi changes gears...though, Rose has no way of knowing that hatefriends is an actual thing for trolls (yet). She also gives us our first instances of canon Classpects (her own, Tavros's, Karkat's, and Aradia's). Also, Terezi is the most hateful to the humans as of yet...but also the most helpful, directly telling us about things like Classpects, Paradox Space, and Exiles right away. She really is the incarnate form of a veteran player in a game who just immediately helps while being a dick. It's also our first hint that SBURB is not about saving or rebuilding the world...but something else entirely. Also, Terezi funnily enough gets tired of explaining and fucks off to when Rose knows more. Hussie also has a LOT to say here. I'll put it under a cut, because this is getting long.
Right here, this is it. This is when the story blasts off with virtually nonstop troll interaction. It pretty much never looks back. In hindsight, the complete takeover of the story by the troll stuff was inevitable. Because of the way they're being introduced slowly—a mysterious conversation here, a wild and colorfully eccentric new character there—they all seem pretty intriguing at this point. It's easy to take trolls for granted as almost the center of the story when you already know about them and have been exposed to them before even reading HS. But man, when this was all just emerging for the first time, through fast and loose storytelling methods, this was Hot Fucking Stuff, let me tell you. People were psyched. By saying "authored by the constellations," I really wonder if Rose, clever person that she is, already picked up on the fact that the twelve losers in her trollslum are zodiac-themed? I know a bunch of readers picked up on it from just a few of the troll handles. Seeing all twelve handles at once makes the theme pretty obvious, but only seeing a few at a time takes a bit of deductive reasoning. It's not instantly evident that "gallowsCalibrator" could be referencing the mechanics of a scale, or that gallows are associated with harsh justice. Or even "adiosToreador." You had to think, like, hmm... Oh, I see, bullfighting. Something about a bull... Oh, I get it now—scales, bulls, Libra, Taurus, twelve characters, it's the damn zodiac. This is how puzzles work. GET IT????? This one section contains a huge payload of lore being revealed. Points that could have been roughly deduced earlier are now being explicitly confirmed, along with the introduction of some entirely new ideas. There's important stuff here, which maybe bears reading a couple times to make sure you've got it all. Thank god it's being conveyed through leet speak in all caps. Terezi was the only one who went about this in a fairly sensible way. I guess once Vriska got around to her trolling stunts, she was pretty logical and effective about it too. It's just too bad her actual goals were destructive, vainglorious, and kind of stupid. That's her brand, though: cooking up smart, cunning ways of achieving incredibly ill-advised goals.

Leila Khaled: Hijacker (2006, Lina Makboul)
-Could you be described as a terrorist? -Our enemies say so. Our enemies call any form of popular resistance terrorism. Who decides and defines what terrorism is? As far as l'm concerned, occupation is terrorism. My people and l have a right to fight it. l don't care what others call it. People have a right to fight those who occupy their country by all means possible, including weapons. That's what it says in the UN declaration. But Leila, if you look up ''terrorist'' in a dictionary?
You, the whole of Sweden and Europe and the USA can travel to Haifa. But l can't, I'm not allowed to. Not just me. 5 million Palestinians can't see Palestine. lsrael doesn't care about international law. Why should we accept that?

Naming International POC Characters: Do Your Research.
This post is part of a double feature for the same ask. First check out Mod Colette's answer to OP's original question at: A Careful Balance: Portraying a Black Character's Relationship with their Hair. Below are notes on character naming from Mod Rina.
~ ~ ~
@writingraccoon said:
My character is black in a dungeons and dragons-like fantasy world. His name is Kazuki Haile (pronounced hay-lee), and his mother is this world's equivalent of Japanese, which is where his first name is from, while his father is this world's equivalent of Ethiopian, which is where his last name is from. He looks much more like his father, and has hair type 4a. [...]
Hold on a sec.
Haile (pronounced hay-lee), [...] [H]is father is this world’s equivalent of Ethiopian, which is where his last name is from.
OP, where did you get this name? Behindthename.com, perhaps?
Tumblr media
Note how it says, “Submitted names are contributed by users of this website. Check marks indicate the level to which a name has been verified.” Do you see any check marks, OP?
What language is this, by the way? If we only count official languages, Ethiopia has 5: Afar, Amharic, Oromo, Somali, & Tigrinya. If we count everything native to that region? Over 90 languages. And I haven't even mentioned the dormant/extinct ones. Do you know which language this name comes from? Have you determined Kazuki’s father’s ethnic group, religion, and language(s)? Do you know just how ethnically diverse Ethiopia is?
~ ~ ~
To All Looking for Character Names on the Internet:
Skip the name aggregators and baby name lists. They often do not cite their sources, even if they’re pulling from credible ones, and often copy each other.
If you still wish to use a name website, find a second source that isn’t a name website.
Find at least one real life individual, living or dead, who has this given name or surname. Try Wikipedia’s lists of notable individuals under "List of [ethnicity] people." You can even try searching Facebook! Pay attention to when these people were born for chronological accuracy/believability.
Make sure you know the language the name comes from, and the ethnicity/culture/religion it’s associated with.
Make sure you understand the naming practices of that culture—how many names, where they come from, name order, and other conventions.
Make sure you have the correct pronunciation of the name. Don’t always trust Wikipedia or American pronunciation guides on Youtube. Try to find a native speaker or language lesson source, or review the phonology & orthography and parse out the string one phoneme at a time.
Suggestions for web sources:
Wikipedia! Look for: “List of [language] [masculine/feminine] given names,” “List of most common [language] family names,” “List of most common surnames in [continent],” and "List of [ethnicity] people."
Census data! Harder to find due to language barriers & what governments make public, but these can really nail period accuracy. This may sound obvious, but look at the year of the character's birth, not the year your story takes place.
Forums and Reddit. No really. Multicultural couples and expats will often ask around for what to name their children. There’s also r/namenerds, where so many folks have shared names in their language that they now have “International Name Threads.” These are all great first-hand sources for name connotations—what’s trendy vs. old-fashioned, preppy vs. nerdy, or classic vs. overused vs. obscure.
~ ~ ~
Luckily for OP, I got very curious and did some research. More on Ethiopian & Eritrean naming, plus mixed/intercultural naming and my recommendations for this character, under the cut. It's really interesting, I promise!
Ethiopian and Eritrean Naming Practices
Haile (IPA: /həjlə/ roughly “hy-luh.” Both a & e are /ə/, a central “uh” sound) is a phrase meaning “power of” in Ge’ez, sometimes known as Classical Ethiopic, which is an extinct/dormant Semitic language that is now used as a liturgical language in Ethiopian churches (think of how Latin & Sanskrit are used today). So it's a religious name, and was likely popularized by the regnal name of the last emperor of Ethiopia, Haile Selassie (“Power of the Trinity”). Ironically, for these reasons it is about as nationalistically “Ethiopian” as a name can get.
Haile is one of the most common “surnames” ever in Ethiopia and Eritrea. Why was that in quotes? Because Ethiopians and Eritreans don’t have surnames. Historically, when they needed to distinguish themselves from others with the same given name, they affixed their father’s given name, and then sometimes their grandfather’s. In modern Ethiopia and Eritrea, their given name is followed by a parent’s (usually father’s) name. First-generation diaspora abroad may solidify this name into a legal “surname” which is then consistently passed down to subsequent generations.
Intercultural Marriages and Naming
This means that Kazuki’s parents will have to figure out if there will be a “surname” going forward, and who it applies to. Your easiest and most likely option is that Kazuki’s dad would have chosen to make his second name (Kazuki’s grandpa’s name) the legal “surname.” The mom would have taken this name upon marriage, and Kazuki would inherit it also. Either moving abroad or the circumstances of the intercultural marriage would have motivated this. Thus “Haile” would be grandpa’s name, and Kazuki wouldn’t be taking his “surname” from his dad. This prevents the mom & Kazuki from having different “surnames.” But you will have to understand and explain where the names came from and the decisions dad made to get there. Otherwise, this will ring culturally hollow and indicate a lack of research.
Typically intercultural parents try to
come up with a first name that is pronounceable in both languages,
go with a name that is the dominant language of where they live, or
compromise and pick one parent’s language, depending on the circumstances.
Option 1 and possibly 3 requires figuring out which language is the father’s first language. Unfortunately, because of the aforementioned national ubiquity of Haile, you will have to start from scratch here and figure out his ethnic group, religion (most are Ethiopian Orthodox and some Sunni Muslim), and language(s).
But then again, writing these characters knowledgeably and respectfully also requires figuring out that information anyway.
~ ~ ~
Names and naming practices are so, so diverse. Do research into the culture and language before picking a name, and never go with only one source.
~ Mod Rina

ljósálfr gale and dökkálfr astarion! 🦋🥀 bringers of dreams and nightmares
based on the hit mobile game fire emblem heroes. download it for free today! (Please Do Not)
a lot of notes on the designs under the cut, i had so much fun with these!
gale
- the eyes on the wings are mystra's
- the colors are based on his aurora stargazing scene
- he's based on the dream-king freyr, who takes human children in unfortunate circumstances and turns them into fairies that become "their most extraordinary selves" but can never return home. he feels guilty for intervening in their fates, but the ends justify the means to grow the power of his realm :-) he mourns the fact that humans stop dreaming (as in losing their ambitions) as they grow older
(feel like this is the type of thing god gale who's slowly becoming more like mystra would do and convince himself nooo it's completely ethical i'm being benevolent actually)
astarion
- the eyes on the yellow wings are cazador's
- one set of wings are yellow inspired by his longing for the sun
- the flowers are the same flowers on his grave, the garden star-of-Bethlehem
- he's based on the character plumeria, who's the bringer of lustful dreams and is disgusted by the humans who have such indecent desires. (she's one of the humans transformed/kidnapped into a fairy) she puts up a sensual front but hates the way people leer at her. nonetheless she must deliver those vulgar desires as dreams, doing a job she hates :-) all she wants is true compassionate love removed from lust... is this ringing a bell
please don't let any of this trick you into believing feh has a good story. but also expect more feh x bg3 from me in the future lol

Gem, I saw the fic ask and I can't read that much text but I wanna know 4: do you have any ocs?
This could be homestuck ocs or personal ocs for your original works, or even something for another fandom idrc I'm just curious
If you don't have any you can just talk about dirkjohn bc ik you like them (or choose your fav thing from the actual ask game lol)
BHey! Honestly that's funny because...I didn't read it all either, just saw a few interesting questions and reblogged, heh.
But regarding 4...yeah I do! I actually have some in Homestuck, some for other fandoms (Pokemon and Warriors) as well as some personal ones. Answers below the cut because I got into it!
In Homestuck, I've got quite a few adopts that I snagged because I...cannot draw. My ability to draw is actually godawful. I love weird unconventional things that aren't supported by canon and...it shows. Some of them include a little Doom-aligned Cherub who lives on Alternia and disguises himself as a bronzeblood, a mutant naga troll with scales and bright green blood, a winged goldblood with wings covered in eyes (she's so cool), a bronze librarian with a gun, and a rainbow blooded mutant who gets out of culling on a technicality because they have fuchsia blood. There are a bunch more too and I don't have them super fleshed out but I'm still happy to talk about them if y'all want to hear.
I've also got a Pokemon fanfiction sitting in my drafts that would be a full ten anime seasons long. Yeah that's not an exaggeration. The main OC is named Phoenix, and she's kind of a modification of the canon protagonist Hilda (though, her adventure actually starts in Kalos). She's a weird girl who fucking loves Pokemon battling and has too much of a stubborn streak for anybody's good. By the end of the story, she's a multi-regional Champion with an Arceus and a match in ability in the form of N, who's the Hero of Ideals to her Hero of Truth and they've got a...complicated relationship. You...may be able to tell that I think the concept of Mary Sues is stupid. All her Pokemon are also kind of OCs, due to the detail in their personalities - a favorite of mine is a very old transfem and aroace Ho-Oh who played a major role in the creation of the world and who she accidentally calls 'mom' at least twice.
My other major Pokemon AU, with a working title of Many Legends, also has a good few! The main protagonist is a young professor who specializes in Legendary Pokemon, which in this AU exist in multiples and can be caught by regular people (with a permit that's pretty hard to get, and some Legendaries require additional permits beyond the basic one). Her name is Professor Wisteria, and she's very chill but treats literal death gods like adorable kittens. Part of her job, especially since she's new in the field, is to check in on people who have Legendaries or are working towards permits, and to check in on wild Legendaries who live alongside humans or otherwise are amenable to being checked on. One of her very notable clients is a middle-aged farmer (he raises several Pokemon for things like milk and eggs, but also breeds starters for the local professor) who had to emergency start working towards a permit after discovering an Yveltal egg abandoned in his coop and, shortly after, having a young Mewtwo created in an unethical experiment show up at his doorstep asking for shelter. Because everyone who has a Yveltal is required to have a contact who has or is close to a Xerneas (or do so themselves) for safety reasons, he comes into contact with an older widower who keeps a Xerneas that's a family heirloom - it was born under the care of her great-grandmother, and will pass to her kids and grandkids when she passes away. She definitely encourages him to think about the far future, as Mewtwo only live a bit longer than humans do but Xerneas and Yveltal, like some others, can live for hundreds of years.
My Warriors OCs aren't much to write home about, unfortunately - there's a couple, and they're all hilariously overpowered (and fun). For my personal OCs...I tried to write a novel or several when I was in sixth grade, a dream I hope to revisit someday. Of course, they had their own cast of original characters - notably including a pair of genetically engineered lesbian generals named Lightning and Angel. They're fun :)
Because I feel like it, I'll also answer your other stuff - Dirkjohn is fucking awesome. It's a closeish second favorite ship for me, behind Johndave. I write...kind of a lot of them haha. I'm clearing quite a few drafts at the moment, but I have 70+ dirkjohn drafts even ignoring anything involving polyamory or splinters. My first ever ship fic was Dirkjohn! It's "Searching" on my AO3, it's definitely not my best work (again, first romance fic) but it was a lot of fun to write. Other people have written incredible analyses on dirkjohn and why it would work, but for me I read some fucking awesome dirkjohn fics and got hooked on the dynamic. One dirkjohn fic that I'm working on right now is based on a dream I had, where they (along with others) are stuck in a time loop, in which the world ends when they're both 23 and they live their whole lives over and over again. It's a getting-together fic and very cute despite the setting.
Just because, I'll answer a few other questions!
Hilariously, my answer to No. 1 (Which of your fics would you keep the basic plot of but rewrite completely?) is...Searching. Yep, the one I just mentioned. The basic premise is really good, but I think I made quite a few mistakes lol. The other one, that I didn't initially count because I'm literally already doing that, is We Live Again - I had a really ambitious set of ideas for it and accidentally wrote myself into a corner with the help of shoddy organization and a nearly nonexistent outline. So, I'm planning to come back to that one.
And 16, are oneshots underrated? HELL yes they are. I fucking love oneshots, they're the main thing I read rn and the main thing I'm writing! Not everything has to be a federal fucking issue lol, it's nice to just bang the keyboard for a while and make a cute little distilled plot, especially when it's for a punchline.

[text ID= "Sexual deviance," I whisper under my breath, repeating the words of my mother on the day I left. "The daughter thinks she's in love with a beautiful, sweet girl who accepts her exactly the way she is. How do you help her?"
The words are so soft that nobody can hear me, but I give it a moment of consideration all the same.
I didn't have an answer at the time, but by now an understanding has grown within me. It's not about the solution, because the question is flawed. There's nothing deviant about me.
If I had to reply, though, I'd consider the new family I've suddenly found myself with, the ones who accept me exactly as I am. I'd consider the way I feel right now in the passenger seat of this car, simmering with joy despite the horrific and dangerous mission I'm about to embark upon.
The answer is simple.
I'd love her. (italicised for emphasis) /ID]
